Good morning! My tweets for the next hour will be devoted to
Good Morning :) Excited to talk about Exceptional Learners this morning with from
Good morning everyone looking forward to some great discussions
Pam Bernards here tweeting live from NCEATalk - excited to connect
with and talk
Welcome as they lead us in a very important topic!
welcome! Thank you for moderating today!
Good morning from Chicago! Looking forward to the conversation.
welcome! Thanks for joining in.
good early morning to you!
It is our pleasure to be here!
Q1. How does your school or
diocese define what it means to be an Exceptional Learner?
cold here in Omaha! I bet it's colder up North!
Upcoming tweetstorm. Will be in and out this morning. Cheers from NJ, 🍻
A1: I don't think we have a definition set for exceptional learners.
Good morning I'll be lurking for a while - family obligation in a few minutes. It is definitely cold up here
morning! Thanks for dropping in.
morning! Heard it snowed in Mn yesterday!
Br Christopher from KS checking in a couple minutes late
A1: We have a "Good Teaching" doc which outlines "excellence" characteristics. Needs more accountability, like most things.
A1 don't know if the ArchD of KCK has that defined
A1: have individual programs to serve the specific needs of the students in their communities
Today's Pope Tweet! https://t.co/qmnCX3A1g0
To communicate with mercy means to help create a healthy, free and fraternal closeness among the children of God.
Please share with me at pbernards@ncea.org https://t.co/tIIi3B8dQx
A1: We have a "Good Teaching" doc which outlines "excellence" characteristics. Needs more accountability, like most things.
Q2) The nat. avg. is 10%
School in Bellevue, WA it's 40%...a truly school doing amazing things
a1 if ArchD of Omaha has one, I'd love to see it too!
Please share! CathEdExL https://t.co/PgNNgYRE9D
A1: have individual programs to serve the specific needs of the students in their communities
Q2. What percentage of the
students you serve are considered Exceptional Learners?
Good morning . Im lurking today from a tiny excursion in San Antonio!
Good morning, weekends have been so busy. Glad to be able to drop in today.
lucky you! It's got to be warmer in Texas than in Chicago!
love the creative learner picture! I believe is filled with these!
Would love to learn more about their best practices
A2: Nit sure of percentage however I know w/better testing we are identifying more students we can better serve
A2: About 70% of honors classes. About 40-50% of standard classes.
Morning. Joining from softball bleachers. A2: IDK, but the question makes me want to find out!
A1: Not sure. Gifted Learning sometimes referred to 2X EXL in my PD reading. Want to learn more!
A2 no idea on percentage and I might want to know and might not.
Indeed! It's been in the humid 80's! Loving the break from Chi.
Ken is the best with graphics!
Hi from STL, checking in a little late.
Q3. How does your school provide
and facilitate services to Exceptional Learners?
A2:Although not sure of percentage however w/better testing are able to serve more students
Good morning everyone. Joining late after some much needed Saturday R&R
Pam are you using exceptional learner as "gifted" or "special needs"? The answers seem to be both?
We can continute conversation about testing I have some ideas I can share
I know at my old school we had differentiated classes. At the HS level there are AP, Honors, etc
A3 We have a learning services coordinator who does an excellent job in providing me support.
Meet Haley & Aaron. Fully included since kinder graduating from Marquette Catholic School in Tulsa https://t.co/RhYIaKQiFw
A3: We hired a teacher for this purpose and have made much better use of Title programs.
Exceptional Learner encompasses both the "Gifted" and "Special Needs"
We have that at all of our schools.
it's a big job! So much information out there. She's keeps us informed.
A2 have resource T who works small group, or push into lower levels to team teach. MS is mostly work w/ accommodations
What are examples of the types of support provided?
A3: This year, we invited a person with special training in autism to present to our faculty.
A3: We have a "Seton Scholar" program for 9-10 grades: smaller class sizes, more in-depth engagement/critical thinking.
A3: offer programs to allow success for individual students and their differentiated learning
We have monthly meetings, emails w/ideas on working with students, I turn to her with questions, IEP meetings
Can I argue that separating students apart into honors is not differentiating.
If all children had an IEP then everyone would be included. Differentiation mean inclusion for all.
ILP's, testing accommodations, small group,so much in our diocese.
A2 We use Daily 5 reading program in Primary Resource T helps w/rotations, by working in a small group within classroom.
thanks for the question, Alice. Can you share more?
Here is an article about how some schools in are serving ExL's
Would love to learn more!
woudln't that be great for all!
Sure, there are some people who are anti-honors etc... classes. .....
A3: Resource Ts, differentiation in the classroom, Stud. Assistance Teams & proper use of Title funds.
Differentiate is to provide choices within the room, not different class with everyone getting same
really? I haven't seen that in Nebraska. My sons took many AP classes.
Diversity is a value not a Divider
Oh, I see your point! Excellent, very true!
it's so important to make good use of Title funds
This is great Ken! Are you doing anything with progress monitoring and assessment as part of your RTI model?
Don't get me started on AP.... drill and kill to take a test is not what is best for our brightest kids
is now trending in USA, ranking 37
we can not create leaders if we do not let them make decisions. Honors is still T led
Yes, I tried to emphasize this at my old school but teachers didn't get it.
Q4. What are your favorite tech
tools for working with Exceptional Learners?
It does not make them better people.... reinforces that grades are important...
I agree with on this one. Every ss deserved a rich, challenging learning env.
I would say we use the DI approach. Each year looks different, depending on Ss needs.
I want my kids to be well rounded, personally. This may mean they take an AP class but family time more imp
Somewhat agree, with College Duel enrollment programs, do we need AP?
A3: Huge impact in Cl room Mockingbird by Katherine Erksine and her play
Good morning from smoky northern Saskatchewan, sorry I'm late, slept in
Agree! I am against having kids feel like failures. Lots of ways to demonstrate how awesome you are. https://t.co/rubry3IGPD
I have seen in HS more of tracking that Ss can't escape, and no assessments were used to determine which track.
Exceptional and Twice ExLs can flourish in small groups that rotate through stations that follow the We Do I Do model.
maybe it's the teacher and school that makes it different. AP at was not like that.
I would hope differentiating is taking place in these classes too!
A4. Lately I have been using Kahoot with 1:1 ipads
Some colleges are stopping accepting AP.
And don't get me started on IB classes...
Our process requires constant needs evaluation and customization.
THANK YOU! Kids should not have to EARN the right to interesting, challenging, relevant curriculum. https://t.co/uomXH63lv3
I agree with on this one. Every ss deserved a rich, challenging learning env.
Lots of paradigms in school.... many of them deserve to be challenged. Honors is one of them. https://t.co/9lckKz7g2K
Yes, I tried to emphasize this at my old school but teachers didn't get it.
A3: Attended breakout session w/ in Boston. Eye Opening. Curious to learn more for my Ss
Proper scaffolding and differentiation provided a clear model for success for all.
My daughter was just naturally gifted in math. It made sense to take it and there was no stress.
Yes!! instead, they have their own dual enrollment, H.S. and College!
A4 adopting whole body listening & strategies for executive functioning & social cognitive behavior https://t.co/rHVB5hpg6p
I would hope, I don't see a whole lot, but I'm not everywhere.
Taking a college class guarantees college credit. With online options, I vote this route
but you make an excellent point, we want the best for our students!
Q4:Encouraged to see a multitude of tech supports available for exceptional learners w/different learning styles
Yes indeed, I often share this with Parents but the letters AP still have a ton of street cred
A4: Xcode for building iPhone apps😀📱
courses from partnership $860,000+ in tuition value saved 126 students, over 700 credits! https://t.co/EO38OR22Vk
Some colleges are stopping accepting AP.
Q5. What PD has your school/diocese provided to assist your work with Exceptional Learners?
A5 ArchD of Omaha has a partnership with Creighton for a masters.
Off to the rest of the day. Have an inspiring and Christ filled weekend!
A5: Our Summer PD institute usually has one or two classes offered
right! But why should our schools wait for govt schools to set agenda? W less beauracracy why can't we move quick
If you did ALL the H you got honors credit, but most of the time those were just more interesting assign.
Barb may I ask, public or private HS? I don’t think that is the case in STL
So do a lot of bogus things. Keep educating and advocating
The has a 4 course cert for principals: Leading Inclusive Catholic Schools for preK-12 schools.
The best training our school did was GLAD - best practices - effective4all https://t.co/xwkXYM9025
Q5. What PD has your school/diocese provided to assist your work with Exceptional Learners?
"Is this what is best for our kids" let's keep saying that until we are super annoying
My sons attended a Jesuit all boys HS
to put into perspective K-12 is 1,100 students 48% Free / reduced lunch. Unlimited Creativity /Imagination
A5: offers peer PD to share program ideas Although more PD in this area is much needed
A5 virtually nill. ArchD pretty much absent in providing pd.
Exceptional Learners includes S's with special needs, learning differences, English language learners and gifted students
Hello frm sunny Boston- Do any schools employ a full or part time exceptional learner support person?
Can you share what this program is about, Beth?
we have a full time Learning Services coordinator.
A5 pd we get in this area is very limited an usually a one approach fits all lecture exceptionality central chooses
:) that’s what I thought. I know AP classes in STL Catholic HS have huge value for Ss.
A5: Have a resource T . A fabulous resource at the CSO. A P generously invited Ts to attend PD.
We do not, but we have some really awesome teachers who still step up to the plate
sons entered as 'Frosh-mores' in college
Second that! I am actually moderating some of our HS online courses next year.
Enjoyed reading the discussion- look forward to digging a bit deeper later- thanks Have a great Saturday!
Agree it's not happening much, for some reason it's a slow process.
How cool would it be if ALL Catholic schools were connected digitally! Students learning with students in faith globally?
so much to keep track of! We really needed this position.
NOT enough! Ts seem to be on their own to find PD. I encourage Ts to use Twitter chats for PD. https://t.co/RsbCWgmqf1
Q5. What PD has your school/diocese provided to assist your work with Exceptional Learners?
Can we help talk them off the edge of the cliff? Only 10% of colleges are highly selective
good news here! Many are! But cost is the digital divider. ;-(
And it's a cord at graduation. Really? They just collect dust after.
Q6. What are some challenges you
face teaching Exceptional Learners?
cost for hardware? Broadband access? Apps?
wish I could be here today. Grad next weekend, have a grad, and with end of school and hugh changes next yr my plate's full.
A5. I think some of the most amazing PD we are doing for teachers of ES is in the technology available today
A6 PD! ArchD of Omaha should step up here. Expensive to do this on my own, although I try!
agree? What is cost prohibitive?
A5 most useful pd comes from Twitter, my own reading and talking to the OT when she visits my room (3 visits/year)
A6 already teach overload of courses, working hard to create rich learning with almost no budget, takes time!
My undergrad classes in Australia had no tests and standards based grading-30 years ago!
A6. TIME! and I think sometimes other parents want their kids included as ExL's?
Q6 challenge of schools blanket statement of "no" to a ExL child, but their siblings are still welcome...
? More like Non-catholic Ed Chat, amirite?
I belive we are on the dawn of a new beginning. Learning no longer in silos https://t.co/tShu5OHAVa
we would truly be a global Church & w/the available technology not sure why that shouldn't already be happening
how do you recognize those that work hard and do well? People do need recognition.
Some forget...we are here for the students!
Q8)
1) Belief - shift the paradigm,ALL students belong
2) Unity - go on retreat together
3) Action https://t.co/vGGrhiIZEZ
we ship exl ss over to gov schools for an hour a day. Doesn't help struggling ss much, and creates division for gifted 😕
Students need to feel their own self-worth. Not be dependent on grades. Encouragement and praise.
agree...it's amazing how change affects people, especial in ed
Q7. What resources would be
helpful to you when working with Exceptional Learners?
agree, not talking about grades, wish they'd go away. Even employees get recognized.
ALL are invited to our Inclusion Summit2 on 4.17.17 in St Louis for the NCEA conference
A6 time & space & lack of control over scheduling & personnel for supports like speech, sensory breaks, activity breaks
A7 Who, in my PLN, can I turn to for questions?
heard a T refuse to use tech other day in class. As if it was a choice?
A6: Understanding from P community. Let's celebrate all God's children.
Great news! I got the funds to go to the NCEA conference in July in Omaha!
OMG! It would be a non-negotiable for me in my school.
I agree but need to include EA along with T. My students and I would be lost without our wonderful EA
A7. more tech devices (1:1?), one more planning period, Parent understanding/support
Gotta go these Saturday mornings get busier and busier. Happy EOY!
A7: Funding to be able to develop/identify the appropriate programs to address the needs of the students
Q8. How does
your school create an inclusive environment to welcome Exceptional Learners?
Ugh have to go! So glad Alice came into this chat! Great conversation!
what makes a T become a fossil? If our job is to help others learn, how can we stop?
A7 imagine if we taught what Ss we're passionate about as well. Might see some exceptional learning https://t.co/OjouTWGcTr
A5: sent me to last summer for a week to learn 📱
A7 more tech with consistent access & apps my choice, space & personnel for student breaks, regular OT, PT, speech support
A8. Hard to answer...I could be wrong, but I think this is something we will need to work on..
