  • 42ThinkDeep - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:08 PM EDT
I'm assuming you have to agree to certain standards that students must meet and then help students work their way up to meet those. #sschat

A1) Looks like a system where achievement is not measure based on things like behavior or having a pencil. #sschat
  • MrKoz31 Jun 12 @ 7:08 PM EDT
A1: Skills over content. Goal is mastery of the skill. Multiple attempts encouraged. Multiple ways to show learning. #sschat
  • scottmpetri Jun 12 @ 7:09 PM EDT
A1 Still have a hard time differentiating between mastery-based & standards-based grading. Are they the same? #sschat
  • MrsLawrenLee Jun 12 @ 7:09 PM EDT
#sschat A1 I am not familiar with Standards Based Grading.
  • gduralek Jun 12 @ 7:09 PM EDT
A1: SBG has 1 point rubrics (esp in APWH) for writing. Specific, constuctive feeedback is far more critical than a "grade" #sschat
  • flipping_A_tchr Jun 12 @ 7:09 PM EDT
A1: SBG means that grade-based feedback pertains to proficiency on certain skill or content expectations, not mere compliance #sschat
  • 42ThinkDeep - Moderator Jun 12 @ 7:09 PM EDT
Conceptually, I dig standards based grading. I'm just not there mentally yet. #sschat

A1: SBG - evaluating whether students "can do" what you expect in terms of the content. Time becomes a variable. #sschat
  • flipping_A_tchr Jun 12 @ 7:10 PM EDT
Mastery implicitly permits retakes/redoes, standards-based grading does not (but it can) #sschat

  • MrRoughton Jun 12 @ 7:12 PM EDT
It's extremely hard at secondary. Colleges (and parents) expect letters and expect them often. SBG doesn't fit that mold easily. #sschat

What do you do with those reflections? Do you grade/assess them independently, or use them to help you determine their SBG? #sschat

#sschat my HS is eliminating 6 week MPs next year to give more flexibility in authentically teaching standards and not being cramped 4 time
    • MrRoughton Jun 12 @ 7:54 PM EDT
Yep, absolutely. We reward every 6 weeks based on GPA. Many standards aren't mastered in 6 weeks. #sschat
