Good morning! Sylvia, Writing Coach / Reading Teacher @BrandonHSEagles ... and moderator of the #HackLearning slow chat! It’s a Merry season before us! Let’s chat all week!
Good morning #hacklearning - so exciting to start Sundays collaborating. Matt Joseph greater Boston area. Excited today's moderator @RaeHughart and I collaborated on an article..and I think we positively impacted the start of the school year. https://t.co/utkwAhCmC3
I see a lot of #hacklearning and @times10books authors and ambassadors at this morning's chat. So pumped for this. Hope you all had a marvelous holiday.
Started reading #uNforgettable this weekend ... OMGoodness! Powerful words and setup! Can’t wait to open it again and move on to chapter 3! #HackLearning#uNseries
A1 I'm hoping to shift the way we think about assessment and how discuss learning with our students. In my school community, this means working with our team to help them create great learning experiences for our students #hacklearning
A1: I want ...to provide a hunger for students to want to learn more
...to help the next generation fulfill their potential and become successful human beings... Starts in the classroom for me. #hacklearning#missionstatement
Because I'm no longer in the classroom, I hope to impact the entire #education world on a global scale by amplifying the voices of the best #teachers and leaders in the profession.
#HackLearning#LeadForward
Many teachers use "STAR STUDENT" check out how this teacher uses it as a way to build community and include the entire class! https://t.co/W4BSzTHUG8#HackLearning
A1: Because I work with leaders and more adults, then students...I want to inspire others to take risks and ensure their potential shines #hacklearning: Inspire others https://t.co/kBEfJUiCyG
A1 I have always been able to have a direct impact in my classroom and in the larger educational communities globally since I started writing. Working with so many teachers has offered a plethora of perspectives and has taught me so much #hacklearning
A1~
~Ss loved being a part of our room & were inspired & empowered to go out in our world & make it a better place b/c they are in it ~ whatever that may be ❤️ #leavingtheirmark#HackLearning
My impact ... i want my kids to be better people for having been in contact with me and that in turn will make the community better. I am not looking to change the world, but my kids will create a visible wave. #hacklearning
A1 I want to positively impact students’ ability to make ethical, Problem-solving decisions in time of peace so that in the storm they will choose wisely #HackLearning
Because I'm no longer in the classroom, I hope to impact the entire #education world on a global scale by amplifying the voices of the best #teachers and leaders in the profession.
#HackLearning#LeadForward
A1 My impact? I'd like to continue giving up control so that my Ts in turn, give up control of their Ss & allow them to take charge of their own learning: through inquiry, self-assessment, goal setting & focus on growth
#hacklearning
I am looking forward to reading your piece about admin being friends with people they supervise. I thought about your question for several days and enjoyed reading the responses others shared. Please tag me when you publish it? #HackLearning
A1 In my current role, it is all about treating teachers the way I did my students, with dignity and respect. Helping them challenge their beliefs and urging them to do the best they can for kids #hacklearning
I heard something about the whole admin being friend thing... I heard the caveat - "as long as they don't go out drinking together." I can see how that would be an issue! #hacklearning
A1 My mission: to EMPOWER students & teachers to notice how their work and relationships at school can be opportunities to enact their values, and to choose values-consistent behaviors even when it’s hard. #HackLearning
A1. A realization that the school is just one part of the educational ecosystem that also depends on parents, community, friends, neighbors, businesses, museums, universities, and more. #HackLearning
A1. On reflection, this is what I want education to do, not necessarily what I want my influence to result in all by myself. I am arrogant, but I am not _that_ arrogant. ;) #HackLearning
A1: This year, I have also been focused on having courage. Being brave enough to ask the tough questions. That is true for students AND teachers - not just skating over things when they could be better. #HackLearning
A1: Also want to support ideas and risk takers. Today's learners discover learning, the do not consume it, so I want to support educators to design learning experiences to match S learning styles #hacklearning
Yes! Students won’t want to learn unless we make the learning process fun & relevant. Lifelong learning is one of the greatest gifts teachers can give to their students. #HackLearning
A1: One of my goals is to develop and empower everyone around me. This includes students, staff, and colleagues. This also includes our parents and families! #HackLearning
This is Katlyn ... she was one of my kids my first year teaching ...she is now a team leader @GEICO and she came in for the Great American Teach In ... a teacher’s impact transcends the classroom and real relationships last beyond the end of the school year. #hacklearning
A2: Many parents in the community where I teach take children out for vacations around the globe. Affects curriculum at school, but also adds education they can't get here. I often want to tag along... ;) #hacklearning
A2: Where I work the communities put a lot of pressure on Ss to do the very best they can. This is great, but also means that we need to tell Ss to slow down and breathe every once in a while. #HackLearning
When classrooms come together to solve community problems, students learn to look beyond themselves and their own spaces. Build empathy and allow them to feel the power of giving and generosity. #HackLearning
You're too kind. It gets easy, when I have people like you and then those people bring other brilliant people into the @times10books family. 🙌🏽

Katie here from VA!
A1: I want to ensure that my Ss are life long learners no matter what their interest. I also want to make sure that all Ss are able to see their value and capabilities no matter what their background! #hacklearning
A2 Check out how neighborhood resiliency and improving edu results from socially connecting families w high needs living SW of downtown Los Angeles. It is the Magnolia Place Community Initiative run by @ChildrensBureauhttps://t.co/ioreZrwLYZ#HackLearning
A2 Parents, as experts on their kids, have information teachers could use to make learning experiences more meaningful. Teachers, as content & learning experts, have information parents could use to extend learning experiences at home. What if we worked together? #HackLearning
A2 being Visible... providing positive opportunities for learning and working ... motivational speakers & volunteers... joining in the mission & vision of the community schools .. money and more #HackLearning
The #Hacklearning series has made a positive impact on me and in turn my staff and students. We have implemented a number of Hack Literacy ideas this year. Much appreciated.
For sure. The good thing about the culture in Japan is that the Ss are pretty amazing and hardworking. The bad thing is, the system does break kids. Those that make it through the system are prepared for life, but not everyone makes it through. #HackLearning
A2. Schools can purposefully plan for educators to be involved. Get a list from City Council of all events and add them to large calendar pages. When school year begins have educators sign up for specific dates/event and then share out on social media. #HackLearning
A2: Many parents in the community where I teach take children out for vacations around the globe. Affects curriculum at school, but also adds education they can't get here. I often want to tag along... ;) #hacklearning
A1. The impact I want to leave is on MY KIDS❤️ They matter most- want them to feel empowered, have choice, FUN, feel challenged with world wide issues, be connected globally, create, innovate, & Most of all to dream BIG & know how much I ❤️ each of them! #HackLearning
communities can have a positive or negative affect on the school ... the location of the school. how often is the school on lockdown because of crime happening in the community. Knowing when to insulate kids from negative and when to expose to positive is important #hacklearning
A2. We know that a strong, consistent context for learning serves to integrate and strengthen cognitive processes involved in learning. Fair to say to say we educators have probably underestimated the role that classroom and school community can play in that regard. #HackLearning
A2~
~they can be involved w/our classrooms & engage in ongoing, authentic conversations about what’s going on in our schools & in the lives of our fabulous Ss ❤️... this is just one way classroom involves the community w/these highlight cards made via @Vistaprint#HackLearning

Some kids never see anything beyond the their community ... important for them to be able to see what is out there and how they can make an impact. #hacklearning
A2. Connecting with communities brings new perspectives, develops empathy, and sparks new ideas. These connections are crucial as we support and encourage our students. #hacklearning
A2 When Ss take their learning into the community both Ss & community are enriched. Ex: our Ss are volunteering to plant mangroves to save our beaches - the beach community is learning alongside them as our Ss learn what life is like for the underprivileged.

Now that’s the way to make an impact #HackLearning Somewhere in he archives I’ve a S letter for being an inspiration for her to become a scientist. I was 6th grade T. Those moments are why I am thankful for having the opportunity to teach!
This is Katlyn ... she was one of my kids my first year teaching ...she is now a team leader @GEICO and she came in for the Great American Teach In ... a teacher’s impact transcends the classroom and real relationships last beyond the end of the school year. #hacklearning
A2: Community involvement is important to me so that Ss can see that they have a large support system, not just their teachers but their rec coaches, parents, gparents, and volunteers. #hacklearning
A2. We know that a strong, consistent context for learning serves to integrate and strengthen cognitive processes involved in learning. Fair to say to say we educators have probably underestimated the role that classroom and school community can play in that regard. #HackLearning
A2. Create a District/Community team that meets monthly at rotating schools. Work toward these people communicating together rather than talking at each other. Develop goals that will improve the community for all. #HackLearning

Here is the moment you all have been waiting for!!! Are you curious? Listen to this interesting hit track and feel the vibes with absolutely nothing to but much to gain----->>>

I want to connect the students and the community in a mutual respect! So the students want to stay and the community supports and wants them #HackLearning
A3: If teachers want a community focus in their classroom, they will make it a priority as soon as school begins. Create ideas and routines together. #HackLearning
A2. During one School/Community meeting at our school, I created a Jeopardy game w/ answers surround topics we needed to work together on improving. Talk about engagement! #HackLearning
A2 Recently @CSpano116 brought her dad to school to talk to the students about the war. We have many untapped resources in our communities that can help contextualize learning for our students #hacklearning
You're going to want to bookmark this @responsiveclass link. It has oodles of ideas and information about building classroom communities - including restoring trust after bullying. https://t.co/YzlE6cai6B#HackLearning
A2: Community can start small and grow to include places and people you never thought of. Show Ss the connections you make on Twitter & give them examples of positive ways to use social media to grow your community. #hacklearning
I want to know I have done everything in my power to provide personalized student centered meaningful relevant learning experiences where students have voice and choice, an opportunity& desire to take risks #Hacklearning
A2. I forgot to promote! :) Er, give the full answer. I am building a network of critical media literacy educators who will hope to contribute to the fostering of a media-literate society (see earlier noted impact ;) ). https://t.co/kW0MTD8Loy#hacklearning
A3 We need to see ourselves as a community and always encourage students to give back. For #Thanksgiving each year, our #KeyClub does a food drive and we all bring food into the community after we pack up the donations. It felt good to participate. #hacklearning
A2 Creating a strong classroom community is the 1st order of business. Once established & students trust one another and their teacher, they are free to show their true selves, learn, struggle & laugh together. A classroom community is truly special and memorable. #hacklearning
A3: Created by the community. Too often Ts fill room for students to talk into, what about having all walls blank and build as the year goes on with moments and keep sakes from what is important, not just what is purchased #hacklearning
A3 teachers can talk it up more ... ask around for support from community businesses... call parents ( or email or text can replace the value of a phone call ) #HackLearning
A3 When we focus on sustainable projects (gardening, recycling, composting) we automatically begin to create relationships with the community. Sustainability requires community.

A3: As an IB school we do community action service projects. These projects directly have ties to the community and give our Ss the sense that the school is only part of a larger context. #hacklearning
A3 We can create a classroom community by teaching students how to bring their own values to the group. What matters to them? How might it be challenging to do what matters? Why might those challenges be worthwhile #HackLearning
A1: I focus on helping my students learn how to think about, understand, and manage their strong emotions. Then how to be compassionate with themselves & others. This will foster a stronger school & community. Kindness is more than niceness. #HackLearning
A3 A community focused classroom can intentionally set up by learning about parents jobs, culture, expertise early in the year and inviting them in to be speakers in your class #HackLearning
A3. At one school, when I was the person in charge of the website, I place logos/icons of our Community Partners front and center so all who visited the site would see the businesses who supported the school. #HackLearning
A3: Try to building connections by teaching students positive ways to interact with one another. This 3-2-1 is one idea. What are some other ways? #HackLearning
A3: As far as involvement with the larger community, it needs to be done meaningfully. Throwing in a connection to "check that box" doesn't accomplish the purpose. It needs to be an authentic connection! #hacklearning
A3. Provide experiences that allow students to feel the value of the relationship with other communities. Our Ss can create positive change now if we open those doors for them. #hacklearning
A2 The community of teachers and administrators supporting one another is also essential. It's because of that support I was able to propose and build new programs, learn new skills & talk through strategies when lessons didn't work out as envisioned. #HackLearning
The thing about #HackLearning that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
A3. When a community partner donated five computers for each classroom, we created a video with an auditorium full of families/students thanking them and hung a special plaque in the front hallway for all to see for years to come. #HackLearning
A3 We ask our Ss to focus on ways to help the community improve. Their social action used to be about raising funds & bringing materials to underpriviledged schools. Now they buy books, donate them & teach Ts how to do read alouds for long term impact.
#HackLearning
A3~
Purposeful action steps that keep community as an integral part of your school/classroom ... like classroom cards mentioned in? 2, dev relationships with professionals in community like @KRScienceLady to help support bettering classroom practices in sciences ❤️
#HackLearning
A2. During one School/Community meeting at our school, I created a Jeopardy game w/ answers surround topics we needed to work together on improving. Talk about engagement! #HackLearning
A3 Students can be tackling real problems in a community focused science experience Using the standards as a path to both student learning and being a difference maker in the community #Hacklearning

A1) I’d like my impact in education to be one that provided opportunities for ALL students to be game changers and influencers in their communities #hacklearning
So important, Andrea. Thanks for sharing your insight at today's #HackLearning chat. Remember, we slow chat throughout the week. @SylviaEllison drops a Q related to this chat on Monday and Thursday.
