A1 I’m Karen Nemeth, co-host of #ELLCHAT and author/consultant on #earlyed for children who are growing up with two or more languages. I’m from the stormy part of eastern PA!
A1:
Melih Ertekin, 7th/8th grade ESOL teacher teaching science in Alexandria, VA! Excited for tonights #ELLCHAT topic! When I first joined twitter years ago, I dedicated my tweets to @ladygaga and Glee. Now I LOVE using it to develop my skills as an ELL professional!
Q2) Other than Twitter, what forms of social networking do you use to get information about teaching ELLs? What do you like these different forms. Of PD? #ELLCHAT
A2
I sometimes get good stuff from collaborating with teacher friends on Facebook. Can’t really think of anything else besides my amazing #TwitterPLC#ELLCHAT
A2) The @NJTESOL_NJBE hotlist is an invaluable resource. There are so many fabulous teachers and admins ready to answer questions from their own experiences and perspectives, and you can remain anonymous when asking or answering. #ellchat
A2) I write a blog and read blogs that other people write. Also webinars are a terrific source of information for teachers. I find it amazing that all this info is available to us! #ELLCHAT
A2: I use Pinterest for inspiration, it always inspires me because it’s such a visual platform. I always think “how could I adapt this for my kids?” #ellchat
A2 A rising version of social media is the community platforms offered by many national organizations such as Hello by NAEYC, MyPeers by Head Start, and MyTESOL Lounge #ELLCHAT
I definitely think any platform where teachers and showcase and share (even market) their creativity from their classrooms is a great source for TESOL PD.
#ELLChat

A2) I also love checking out Pinterest to connect with new blogs or pick up ideas to share with teachers. However, Pinterest requires a more discerning eye at times. #ellchat

A2) I see good discussions on Facebook. Several groups like Advocating for ELs and Leading ELLs. Those are by @ValentinaESL & @LeadingELLs.
FB and Twitter are my go to. They have great short thoughts and also lead me to great blogs & podcasts. #ellchat

A2: I think finding balance between personal & professional use of social media accounts can be tricky for teachers. FB is especially challenging in my opinion #ELLChat
A2
I’m planning some ELL PD next year for my school and look forward to using many of @TanELLclassroom AMAZING resources to spread best practices! His site is a must for ELL educators!
#ellchat
Agreed. I don’t use my FB page for my professional life -That’s strictly personal for family and friends. My professional life is here on Twitter where I can connect with colleagues and former students! #ellchat
A2 I know many educators get ideas from Pinterest, but we often see new teachers picking up not-so-good activities or crafts there. How might we offer guidance about being a careful consumer?

A2) Let's not forget @Youtube! #VirtuEL17 was an amazing online #ELL conference that tied in social media during presentations. Almost 6,000 visitors. You can still get the whole thing here: https://t.co/eYfQ4xpvN2#ellchat
A2: Another one is online PD events like #edcampglobal or the one in May @MsSalvac has mentioned on Twitter. Sometimes sessions are Google Hangouts or other video #ELLChat
A2: Not sure this is social media - but running a session for the MA State EL directors Fri. and using this one shared document to collaborate and share ideas. Feel free to read after. https://t.co/9PDzhuWG9k#ellchat

A2) Thx! yes! #MADPD in May & then #VirtuEL18 will be in June. These require no registration & they're great PD. You can really up ur own PD by presenting online. Submit a proposal 2 #MADPD! (Make A Difference PD) They are accepting all proposals: https://t.co/r5wiJuWS7s#ellchat
A3: that is such a tough ? To answer in so little characters! I would sum it up as a support system and my group who get me!!! It’s become a lifeline ❤️😊 #ELLCHAT
A3. I have gained many valuable lesson ideas, & scaffolding tips. Additionally, I have found professional resources and contacts that I can use as references when I have a question or need to research a topic. #ellchat
A3) So grateful for my Twitter #pln. I’ve gained colleagues, PD opportunities to both attend and present, and more tried and true ideas than I could possibly count. #ellchat
A3: Tonight is my first Twitter chat and I’m hooked. I’ve already bookmarked 12 tweets to follow up on. I can gel this is going to be informative, inspiring, and maybe give me a chance to do the same for others! #ellchat
A3) My Twitter #PLN betters the work I do every day. They are a constant source of fresh ideas and they help me keep my bar high for #SIFE, #Newcomers and all #ELs. I luv seeing what is going on out there. We are all #BetterTogether. #ellchat
A3
The best benefit for me is the constant reminder that there is always something I new I could be doing in my classroom. Love seeing pictures, videos, and reading reflections from my #TwittedPLC bc I gain so much from them! #ellchat

A3) Importantly, my Twitter #pln not only allows me but forces me to consider new and sometimes uncomfortable perspectives. Being uncomfortable is a great indicator that you need to change, learn, grow, or all of the above! #ellchat
When one of your dedicated students receives SOM, but family couldn't attend because of work. ELLs CAN! I am so grateful Cosgrove embraces a positive learning environment that celebrates the talent of all students. It makes a difference. #ellchat#WhyITeach#cosgroverocks
A3 One thing I love about social media is people post links to articles, webinars, resources from all corners of the field - that gives me access without having to join everything or buy subscriptions! #ELLCHAT
A3: I think my PLN has not only taught me alot, it's given me an outlet to share what I know as well. Sometimes, we need to go outside of our circle and talk about our craft #ELLCHAT
A3) Our team learns so much from our friends on Twitter -- what's happening, what's on people's minds, what they love and want to see, and what else they are sharing #ellchat
A3
My ESOL coursework was accelerated (read: killer) & took place last year during my #firstyear (teaching science, mind you 😂)
A LOT of TESOL content was/is still marinating; my #TwitterPLC develops/nourishes my ever-acquiring knowledge of scaffolds, coop lrng, etc...! #ellchat

Talk about building the plane as you’re flying it! One thing I’d love to do is teach a sheltered content area class. Social studies would be such an interesting and intense course to teach with lots of ELLs #ellchat
A4 I follow probably 20 hashtags on daily basis, but I rotate some in and out. I watch for new hashtags that I find in tweets I like and check them out. #ELLCHAT
A4
I do #ELLCHAT and I love Twitter chats with @ILAToday! I’ve also seen some ELL book clubs.
Twitter also allows us to do.... #BOOKSNAPS! Showcase your solo PD using a @Snapchat pic and an epic @Bitmoji and possibly spark the learning of a member in your #TwitterPLN!

A4 I love tweeting to authors about books our students are reading. We are so excited when we get responses from them — and the authors seem to love seeing kids enjoying their work. #ellchat
A5: I’ve used Snapchat to do book snap assignments before. Snapchat isn’t my favorite social media platform but the kids love it, so I figured I should get on board. It’s nice because they can use emojis and bitmojis and other images to get their point across #ellchat
A5) Now that I’m out of the classroom, Twitter gives me the real life perspective on what’s working, what isn’t, and what’s fresh and new. It’s helpful to see the research in action and hear perspectives of teachers who are living it. #ellchat
A3) Many ESL teachers tell me that they do not receive enough PD in their schools to help them support colleagues who have ELs in their classroom. So PD on social media is great for them. #ELLCHAT
This is by far the best analogy for my first year teaching ✈️😂
I teach sheltered middle school science and it’s interesting, intense, and so much fun! I can really experiment with my craft! My dream is social studies one day! #ellchat

A4: Uhm ELL chat when I can remember! I’m mostly an observer in the others. Looking to engage more and find more chats for leaders! However I love learning from the teachers who are doing the work! Keeps me grounded! #ELLChat
A4 I love to catch kid awesomeness, brag on teachers, and highlight schools in my district. When you are looking for the good and expressing gratitude, it makes everyone have a better day. And we could all use some more encouragement. Especially now. #ELLChat
A7 My most important tip for building a PLN on social media is - INTERACT! if you want to just find stuff - you can lurk. But if you want to build a network, you have to respond, support, share! #ELLCHAT
A7: Follow people who participate in the chats you do. Look at their profile & see who else they follow. Make sure your profile tells what you teach & what your interests are #ELLChat
Q7: Write more. The more you put your thoughts out there the more people want to connect. Starting my blog helped to start to build new followers https://t.co/nmHucHqSAV#ellchat
A7) follow a hashtagand you will notice others who are sharing goodcontent. Then follow the people they are following!
And everyone needs to be following @Larryferlazzo#ellchat
A7) Find people who challenge your thinking or whose practice you’d like to emulate. Go through their following list, and get busy following! Then, interact whenever possible. #ellchat
A7: Anyone going to ASCD, would love to connect. This was the blog I wrote to build collaborative opportunities at the event and to support your growth with building a PLN https://t.co/HTDbo7T7j4#ellchat
A6 - and sometimes you just have to step out and be brave! That’s what my daughter wrote in her first teacher/leader blog: https://t.co/DLQVT6JUfW I hope you’ll read and share it! #ELLCHAT@Leahjmullen
A7) I think it's helpful to start with a few organizations, colleagues, and/or experts you trust. Look at who they follow and retweet. Look for diverse voices and perspectives. #ellchat
