I engage dormant readers by helping them find books about things they are interested in
Good evening everyone! Randy, Kansas Commissioner.
A1) I engage dormant readers by encouraging them to find an interesting topic!!
A1) Try to engage them with books that relate with their interests
Q1: I let kids pick music lyrics to read and slowly get them to a book. Build confidence first. I tie a just dance to it too.
Q1: I work to get to know students' interests and find lots of related books to recommend to them & minimize reading requirements.
A1 Even at the middle levels, I think a good read aloud gets Ss engaged
A1 By reading a variety of texts as read alouds, you never know what might grab their attention
A1 - If dealing with a free-read situation, turn it into passion project/genius hour
A1: Find books they can connect with. Also, even at the HS level, read to them. It hooks them. https://t.co/fTMvE2wKLV
A1: Lock into their interests, find what they love, engage through connecting activities
A1: Simple resp is allow them to explore their own interests and go from there.
Oh I like that idea! Kind of along the lines of poetry--music makes it seem accessible.
A1: Be tricky! Give them graphic novels, audiobooks, comics, short stories, poems, super engaging books, let them choose anything
A1: I try and have them read things besides the textbook. Have connections to the world. Interesting stories. Etc.
A1: choice and starting off with graphic novels. No discussion about their "level."
A1: Once hooked, I do active learner activities with book
try to bring in different articles to read about science. Every1 loves reading about giant bugs, right?
A1 work REALLY hard to find topics they like and then in turn find different genres of books on that topic!
A1) Engage them by showing books from outside what they know - graphic novels, etc. Find what is interesting to them (not us) :)
A1 I have maps, magazines, recipes, poems, etc. in our classroom library
Josh Stephenson Assistant Principal Liberal HS
A1:find materials Ss like and that's controversial. We read tons of articles on video game addiction, for ex
I take the time to visit my Ss to see what their interests are or what authors they like. All about finding the right book.
Hello friends! It's Monday & that's a good thing because 1. It's 2. ! I'm Instr Coach !
Hello friends! It's Monday & that's a good thing because 1. It's 2. ! I'm Instr Coach !
Sam from Buhler! 9-10 ELA teacher. Favorite book To Kill a Mockingbird. I also love Heroes by Cormier - fast read, lots of action!
Q1 Read pieces of good books out loud. Personally recommend books. Place good books on desks- they always pick them up.
A1: It's all about finding something interesting to them. I hate when people get judgy about what kids/people read.
"no discussion about their 'level'" YES! YES! YES!
A1: Don't pressure on it. Give space for reading. Model it yourself. Notice and praise those that are reading for pleasure
A1) Convos about interests start 1st then suggest and expose to materials of interest.
A1) At the primary level, reading aloud is crucial.
A1: Have genuine discussions about the books they are reading with them, and finding out what interests them
I try to find books to read to my class that are exciting. Ss usually end up checking them out at the library when I'm finished
A1)Anytime u can connect themes from a novel into current issues & have meaningful work go along w it, you'll have more engagement
Annie first grade teacher in Kansas. A1: I do a read aloud from a funny book that is a series. Hook 'em with one and give em more
A1: In school I always loved whatever we read aloud as a class, other than Scarlet Letter...yuck
I also try to make sure our read aloud books have sequels, which I don't read to them.
A1. I try to encourage dormant readers by spending time with them in the library and finding books of interest.
Q1: I also just started an instagram to share books I'm reading with Ss. This am it was "Did u really read 3 books this weekend?"
A1: I discuss books with SS indivialually. Show them books they miught like. I read with them allow them to read picture books!!!
Agree!! It's how I always get them hooked on a series! https://t.co/rno6KkHbgQ
A1) At the primary level, reading aloud is crucial.
Sooo many creative activities w textual connections
A1: It's hard to get kids excited about reading mathy things. So when I get the chance, I like to ask about what they are reading
A1) Have a Twitter chat as a formative assessment! :)
Yes, vary the engaging text
Dig deeper! When a S says they aren't a reader I tell them they haven't found the right book!
A1: I think you have to get them into the right book and provide TIME for them to read it. The Ss love when I read to them!
A1: pick books that students relate to. Characters same age and same problems
Awesome! So important for Ss to have reading convos with every adult in the building. Helps Ss see reading is 4 all!
A1: Diff perspective from , but always have literacy (interactive word wall, objective, posters) all over my gym!
My kiddos are hooked on GN this year! Been a great step from picture books to chapter books! https://t.co/lCsrYx2PRG
A1: choice and starting off with graphic novels. No discussion about their "level."
A1- I try to encourage Ss to read books they are interested in, will enjoy, & have peer recommendations!
I don't know why but I am digging the chp matchbook idea
we do book talks - Read a part - cliffhanger - and they go check it out!
Yes! Just heard from Ss today-way to encourage more reading is by providing time to read! https://t.co/tUORVZaN2e
A1: I think you have to get them into the right book and provide TIME for them to read it. The Ss love when I read to them!
A1 p2: I try my best to get them interested in a book they are trying to read if I know its plot. Or try to suggest something
A1: Sell, sell, sell! I talk up books that I think my Ss would like.
I call GNs the gateway drugs to getting them hooked onto other things.
. had a great definition of "dormant" today 4 Ss: "kids who haven't figured out that reading is cool yet"
A1: engage them! Hook with music, art history, religion;find their interest. A book is waiting. https://t.co/wiyibBS9AP
A1)read aloud, character studies, finding out what interests Ss and go from there
The sophs are reading Fahrenheit 451, and one of my students was talking about what he read so passionately. Was great to hear!
A1) Even if it's a classic, the themes/emotions that existed then still exist now. You just have to find HOW they exist for our Ss
It is hard to find the time; however, many don't have an internal reading voice = impt. for T to model!
right, love a good reader's theater
A GREAT group of passionate educators discussing how to help students read successfully! KS teachers are making a difference!
Book talks and book trailers every day!
There's a book for every reader--we just have to help them find it! https://t.co/Of3FL2S3Nx
. had a great definition of "dormant" today 4 Ss: "kids who haven't figured out that reading is cool yet"
A1: Give kids time to read in class. Even if it's just five minutes, so good for them. They all love it one day or another.
A1: I always encouraged “good fit” books & allow Ss to switch books the book they’re reading isn’t interesting.
A1: I also make a big deal out of books that are new to our classroom library until they are begging for the books
Great discussion so far! Q2 is on deck!
I also look for book trailers that are made by the authors/pubs to show the kids.
What If, by Randal Monroe, of XKCD comics, might provide a link. My middle schoolers love that book.
The Walking Dead GN are big now. Easy to then move to WW Z or I Am Legend, both higher reading level.
Ha! I liked the story, but not a fan of the book itself. Thank goodness my HS T read it aloud. Saved me in college!
And I read the books myself. Can't help any readers if you aren't one yourself.
Yes. Even HS Students enjoy being read to. https://t.co/2EIKHorhEt
A1)read aloud, character studies, finding out what interests Ss and go from there
Read parts of a book. Introduce to the classics. There's a reason why they are classics.
My kids get into reading if there is a movie that goes with it. Then they can compare and contrast. They get 😡if it's not the same
If they are reading something I know about, I try to have in depth discussions about it. I've ruined some that way
A1: Also, give Ss choice. If they want to read a Sports Illustrated for Kids, go for it! Want to read about Minecraft, go for it.
Our librarian had a selection of books for the teachers and staff to read in the building. She then posts what we're reading.
Just bought us a ton of new ones! My kids can't read them fast enough! https://t.co/rjr12WA4xn
A1: I also make a big deal out of books that are new to our classroom library until they are begging for the books
yes indeed. We do Merchant of Venice with enrichment activities & stations
How could I forget about those! I read those every week at home. Thanks!
We "sneaky read" often- Ss find a perfect spot in the classroom and sneak some reading minutes whenever we can. Kids love it!
A1 providing a diverse selection of reading materials - books of diff. genres, science world magazines, articles from textbook
For had group of 12th gr Ss do readers theater for 5th gr S--great for both groups!
One of my Ss is writing a tips & tricks help sheet for Minecraft!
I need to do this more! https://t.co/pfaz9kqkSP
I also look for book trailers that are made by the authors/pubs to show the kids.
what a great idea! Shows we are readers too!
I leave books conveniently laying around. They pick them up and ask about. I'm all to happy to share about the book.
ahhh, that sounds cute. We do children's books from Edgar Allan Poe.
A1with some of my sped Ss, they have access to audiobooks, decoding deficits then aren't an issue
Yes! Choice is important and a right of every student. https://t.co/6MYXnpaEkk
A1: Also, give Ss choice. If they want to read a Sports Illustrated for Kids, go for it! Want to read about Minecraft, go for it.
little nerve wracking to have to let go and encourage them plan and lead it all! They're gonna b great. .
I would love to find out more about this and how you do it.
A2: Mini-lessons are helpful for balancing types. I tie in a blog post/ news article/ poem with a story. Reading has many shapes.
A2: if they are reading for many kids that's more important than what they are reading. I try and balance what I read 2 them
A1: In a former district we had “what I’m reading boards” outside of each classroom/office for Ts to post what they were reading.
A2) Just day by day. We'll read whole-group, small group, individually, etc
A2: We read in short bursts, watch videos, read together as a class, use infographics
A2 Wedo a lot of our reading lessons on our SS and Sci themes! Guided Reading we do much more fiction!
A2. I fell like that is VERY tough. So much emphasis on informational. Hard to find time for the free choice reading.
A2: we discuss the differences in the types of reading we do- how rdg for pleasure is going to look different than rdg for MDPT
A2) My kids like some passages I purch on TPT, variety, new vocab, repetition & skill practice
A2: I try to alternate so if they don't like nonfiction we will soon get to fiction, etc...
A2: Again, diff for , but love using to help. Sped and ESL Ss can listen, draw, or read.
A2:Split time in week between F and NFic. Keep kids on their feet. Keep it fun.Dont get stuck teaching one standard
A2 I plan time for every type of reading, every day. Partner, independent, rdg instruction, read aloud, all of it
A2: Reading in various contexts - across the various content areas! Balance same topic with fiction/non-fiction to show comparison
A2: SS is all hist/gov't docs & court cases...I use small excerpts, jigsaw, and scaffolding techniques. Have to model to Ss a lot
A2) I think regardless of the balance of types of reading, you must also balance with what they are DOING with the reading.
A2 still learning! requires lots of different reading skills. Not sure how to balance them all yet & encourage fun reading
A2: In 1st we spend time reading individually, reading together, reading in pairs/groups, listen to reading, etc..
I don't do a good job of incorporating poems in my balance!
We have a SS teacher who will use a poem from a particular time if I send it his way. "The Killers" by Sandburg during WWI, f ex.
Q2: Focus on related texts, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, all on same topic. Kids make great connections.
A2 I think not all kids even recognize importance of reading differently for diff types of text. Hard thing to make concrete!
A2: I try to have a book for every topic we discuss, so it's mixed all throughout the day
my kids love recording their reading in seesaw
A2: Tiered reading and tiered assignments as superhero groups. Kids want to be batman (grade 9 group)
A2: Diff. Types can be incorporated cross-curricular to cover a wide range of topics and still be able to fit in fiction.
A2: Also try to find texts on the same topic that are varying types of texts. Covering your standards in SS or Sci while rdg/worth
A2: We have . We get a good mix of expository and narrative texts to read. Love the convos kids have about the text.
A2: It is very hard to find reading for my class other than informational. I may try some What If by Randall Monroe
A2: SS is mostly reading for information. I do try to find books, poems, etc. about our historical topics.
A2: ea tier has it's own reading strategy and choices for reading materials
A2 We have a SS teacher who will use a poem from a given time if I send it his way. "The Killers" by Sandburg during WWI, f ex.
A2: I balance different types of reading by assigning different projects that Ss enjoy.
I noticed this in our questions today. Lots of just say they "just read." Definitely something for me to work on.
A2: We have a good mix of different source types to use when writing--ads, charts, interviews, articles, etc.
A2: Reading should come in all forms, print & digital. IMHO it should be about information literacy, processing, & communication.
A2)Id do fic read aloud, lots of Shakespeare for acting, then read tons of non fiction to incorp exps writing & debate
We love using the great app - Ss read daily current event articles at their reading level, S friendly, w activities
My Ss love reading the passages on . They love getting to "pick" & there's a writing component~BONUS!
I have to use many different types of reading strategies for my Ss to understand things like Marbury v Madison and Emancipation
I need to do better with that too!
That's a great idea! I also try to push picture books, no matter the content area. https://t.co/PYAYM3Sj3u
A2 We have a SS teacher who will use a poem from a given time if I send it his way. "The Killers" by Sandburg during WWI, f ex.
Love, love, love that non-fiction reading!!
I don't either. Working on it, though! This yr when we did poetry and a dormant reader said "This was actually fun!"
Absolutely! https://t.co/aMcBxPRZIe
A2) I think regardless of the balance of types of reading, you must also balance with what they are DOING with the reading.
A2:Shared reading, read to someone, read to self, and guided reading allows for multiple types of text everyday!
A2: Incoporate sci rdg & SS rdg. Use themes for unit CCSS goals
Yep. Working on the balance here too. Also have to keep in mind their reading for other content areas. https://t.co/UJ63z2Y0lO
A2 still learning! requires lots of different reading skills. Not sure how to balance them all yet & encourage fun reading
Agreed! It is so easy to kill a good book by working it to death!
I typically spend more time on fiction, have in the past used expository tied to SocSt curriculum
We focus so heavily on the nonfiction though...I wish they had more opportunity for fiction reading with me. Make it happen.
The other side of Soc Studies are the powerful stories told from the people who lived it: diaries and letters are powerful tools!
recommended which has a collection of real event texts to print out.
Have you tried ? Great resource
Love ! They also have good text sets that related to different topics/novels.
A2: a great idea from is 2 place pins on a world map displayed in the class 2 assure ur class reads around the world!
I have used this a little. Keep meaning to share it. https://t.co/phdQWfGvdZ
recommended which has a collection of real event texts to print out.
A2: Try to vary the text as much...along with sharing the reading with Ts read alouds, independent reading and partner reads
And text sets to go along with sci/SS topics as well as lit. Great resource! https://t.co/0LOCpD0dRV
Love ! They also have good text sets that related to different topics/novels.
LOVE NEWSELA. Seriously. They are so good for current events and scaling the articles as necessary. https://t.co/LRj1YMvS8J
recommended which has a collection of real event texts to print out.
A2. Use it in my reading and writing lesson. Have examples for the type of writing/genre.
Q3 coming up in a minute!
Yes! It's important to teach Ss how to search/read online text early! My 2nd graders are amazing at this. https://t.co/YGivYLgl7E
A2: Reading should come in all forms, print & digital. IMHO it should be about information literacy, processing, & communication.
I go to a lot for sci articles. Lots of good finds!
That sounds cool as well. Do you use MobyMax as supplemental?
A2: My Ss and I really enjoy . The app has interactive features that really engage the Ss.
A2.Trying 2 find balance, start class with independent choice reading. Vary with Text.2Text connections https://t.co/euOFIKzYLQ
Non-fiction that reads like fiction...and allows for conversation about bias and perspective!
A2: big shift from learning to read to reading to learn 4 us. I push to find things they enjoy to develop that love of reading
Yep. I'm English, not Reading, so I still feel like it'd be nice to do fiction with the narrative, but not as easy.
A2: Start lots of novel units with nonfiction to help build background knowledge as well.
A2: mixing it up daily, I think students appreciate the change. They enjoy reading aloud & to a partner and with a goal in mind
my librarian is great. Trouble is, she's just part time and our schedules rarely line up! 😢
A3: We blogged quite a bit last year, but so much this year. I need to make that more of a priority.
Q3: Admittedly need to work on this one. Excited to see your answers! I do try to make sure kids read each others' work often.
A3: our writing is published on our Seesaw blog, shared on bulletin boards around school, shared on our class facebook page
A3: We write EVERY day using & share among our class. They know other kids will read & comment on their work
Something I'm going to work in more next year!
Displaying writing works in the hallway.
A3: when students write, I write. When they read, I read. Their peers are their audience. Nothing more legit than their peers💯
A3: This is a struggle of mine. What blogging platforms do you Ts recommend?
Work with her anyway. Once you can get it going, Perhaps others will see - can bring her full time.
A3: Use student work as mentor text or use real writings and narratives or poems
A3: Blogged quite a bit last year, not so much this year. Need to make this a priority next year.
We do share some of our writing in and bulletin boards. Would love more ideas.
A3) Use tech tools to publish, then put on website and share with other classes for feedback
It's all good. Glad you're here, Jenna. :) WELCOME!! is a beautiful & welcoming community/family.
A3) Bloggins is a great (very public) platform, but you can also do school-wide publications, local publications, etc.
A3: Rt now I have my intervention kids working on a debate about self-driving cars--writing an argument to share w/ class
Otherwise, there's the global network. Lots of resources here on Twitter.
What blogging platform do you use? Want to start with my Ss soon but details...
A3: find a buddy classroom, pair up to read together, across grade levels, give TIME to share
joining late! A3- provide opportunities to electronically publish and respond to others
A3:Write w/purpose! Audience needs to understand where Ss are in the process-integrate Ts Inst Coaches, admin, etc to MODEL!
A3. Students have blogs where they post their writing. Recent holocaust poems we wrote are hanging in hall. Share writing w/ class
I have some Ss writing novels in KidBlog. Plan to share with other Ts, then Ss outside the school for feedback
A3 - The kids post to ... Their peers and parents can view their writing.
Boom! Students love seeing their hard work displayed to their favorite audience, peers! https://t.co/CA88KnP3GK
Displaying writing works in the hallway.
A3: Pt. 2 - We have a cross-curricular writing program that helps Ss to write in all content areas. Game changer for Buhler.
a3 I want to do this but we never quite get off the ground.
has a very easy and kid friendly blogging option.
A3Genius hour creates opportunities: draft emails for community leaders, blog 2 keep customers informed, & write thank you letters
A3) You could even use a platform like Google Classroom to bring authenticity to a classroom discussion via writing
A2: my students enjoy reading newsELA articles about current and trending topics - love finding the cross-curricular articles!
A3: Would you write amazing things if you knew it would just sit in a teacher's turn in bin? Naaahh.
I love blogs for students, teachers, & admins! https://t.co/fPMnKKnQjA
A3: We write EVERY day using & share among our class. They know other kids will read & comment on their work
I like the idea of integrating Ts, admin, etc-use the experts/experienced to model the process.
It's a website with planned mini-lessons for ELA using CCSS. Diff inform text or fiction
A3 we share our journals daily. We also wrote persuasive letters to pencil companies telling them why their pencils were the best
Q3 I love using & to connect with other classes!
Ss write in Reg Ed room in journal but I need to have them write more in my room
A3:Type a note in seesaw, then share the blog with parents, other classes, and peers.Ss enjoy being able to comment back and forth!
We are going to do a poetry slam to share our work with parents!
Oh, right, um... well color me stupid.
A3 this a definite struggle, confidentiality, skills below peers, my Ss writing tends to be only for me
A3: this year I've posted more Ss writing in the hallway. In past years used blogging...excited to start using
TY. I use it for stations
A3) Have students create a video representation of their writing and share on school's youtube channel
We do 15 minute writes using pobble. I find kids begging for more time. Pictures give them a starting point.
A3: also helps run a Creating Writing Blog for students and teachers to post poems and stories.
A3: I saw somewhere where Ss wrote book reviews on the books they read on . Thought that was a good idea!
A3: I try to have students share their writing in groups. We will often have contest where we vote on the best one in each group.
WE have done a poetry slam the last 2 years with sophomores. Surprising who steps up sometimes. Kids respond well
A3: my 8th grade final will be S choice to create Infographic for elem Ts classroom or interview veteran for our Vet Book
Hey, it's taken me 3 years to figure out Twitter. Ok, a lot longer. but been teaching for 3 years ...
A3. Peers, bulletin board, myself. I'd love to learn more on this and connect with other districts for peer sharing
A3: This one is tough for me. Sometimes I have them explain what they did and share notes with others.
Idea. Never done before, but make class book and they all submit favorite piece of writing at end of the year? Keep on shelf after
So let's just say, hypothetically, that not a lot of tech is available. What's another option for sharing w an audience?
My Ss answer a short question on and make comments to other Ss.It helps them put forth more effort!
We are finding that students are writing less than 10 years ago. Is that true in your class?
So agree w this! has Up the game in writing! https://t.co/5LVKha5QEh
A3: Would you write amazing things if you knew it would just sit in a teacher's turn in bin? Naaahh.
Awesome x Infinity!! https://t.co/Ndne6GtEuZ
A3: when students write, I write. When they read, I read. Their peers are their audience. Nothing more legit than their peers💯
A3 when we do portfolio writing we share with the class.
A3: I like to have students give presentations for their classmates. I know I can do more with this, but need some ideas.
"Connect with other districts for peer sharing" Great idea! Meet , 6th grade teacher in Andover. :)
Also, Boomwriter is awesome. Can order a real book! Tailored to elementRy but I used I'm HS.
https://t.co/TlB4MJPo49
I would like to develop more of a writers workshop in my class - any ideas or models would be helpful!
I would have agreed a few years back. Now, science, SS are writing more.
thank you notes, pen pals
A3: We have an annual Young Authors Conference where every Ss shares a piece of writing. will be our guest.
I'm finding that as I implement more, my ss are writing tons more in science. Loving it!
Maybe someone on here can do a peer share/ pen pal story telling between classes!!! Anyone down?!?
I just had to google . Can you tell us more?
My Ss don't write full research papers, but they write often. Much more now than my room 5 yrs ago
I just shared this exact example.
Our FACS class made a cookbook and they all wrote intros for the recipes.
I don't think it is less; I think it is different. We spend much more time on the HOW/WHY not just the what.
It couldn't have been that I recently watched an awesome social media presentation at a recent leadership institute?? :)
We pair my 7th graders with the 5th graders and they exchange emails w/7th answering their q's about entering middle school.
Already almost time for Q4!
A3: our school has a young author's conference every year and every Ss writes a book to share with community members and other Ss

A5 2nd graders also take a field trip to every year!
That's a really neat idea!

A5: It's tough, if parents don't support it's so hard to make them...plus I WANT them to WANT to read
A5: with our school's new policy on less homework I just try to encourage parents to have their kids read 15-20 min each night
Definitely!Always groans when I ask them to find a stopping place... "But it was just getting good!"
The kids can't wait for the next "chapter".
A5: Pt. 2 = I always recommend to my Ss to keep a good book in the bathroom. They giggle, but it's true! :)
