#FCSVanguard A1: Educational GRIT can be summed up as an "unswerving desire to drive student achievement through innovative practices that prove to be sustainable over time"
A1: grit means having courage and standing by your convictions! For #fcsvanguard it means having the chutzpah to try new things and encourage others to do so as well!
A1: Watching our students push their thinking in Readers and Writers Workshop=GRIT our teachers are becoming pros at pushing them to “just give it a try” #fcsvanguard
A1: Watching our students push their thinking in Readers and Writers Workshop=GRIT our teachers are becoming pros at pushing them to “just give it a try” #fcsvanguard
A2) I think that grit can be taught as well as being innate. For some students it might just take some encouraging and help to learn they can push through and succeed in anything! #fcsvanguard
A good growth mindset will tell you just about anything can be learned (and taught), so yes! A lot is determined before they step into your classroom, but you can be a big influence.#fcsvanguard
A2 - Some people are born with grit, but you can also teach it by creating a positive learning environment where students are not afraid of failure and constantly striving to do their best and learn from mistakes #fcsvanguard
A2: Some people have Grit innately, but some people can be taught grit. There may be a difference in the levels of passion between innate grit and grit that is taught. #fcsvanguard
First, I talk about perseverance with them. I put it right on the table. Then when it’s a particular difficult task we are working on I call on them to persevere! #fcsvanguard
A3 as a TAG teacher, I engage my Ss though tons of inquiry. If any of my Ss show signs of disengagement, I will send a peer to the rescue! TAG Ss love to collaborate! #fcsvanguard
I engage my students to persevere by working with them to understand the bigger picture/the why behind what we are doing. If they understand the purpose I feel that they are more willing to complete the work, even when it is challenging! #fcsvanguard
A3. As a METI my favorite thing to do is create a kahoot game with more than 1 correct answer so Ss will not get discouraged for their wrong answers.#fcsvanguard
A3: I like to tell Ss they need to simplify things - often when they get discouraged they are over-complicating! Give personal examples, or more general to get them back on track. #fcsvanguard
A4: I’m in the media center, but our students are terrified of making mistakes! I’m sure when I taught, I didn’t embrace it like I should have. #fcsvanguard
A3: I believe this culture can be established in your classroom. Give Ss a chance to experience and embrace success in your classroom let them hold on to that.
#fcsvanguard
A3: My students love technology, music, and money. I teach middle school math so I try to incorporate money and technology as often as possible. #fcsvanguard
A2 can teach students about grit but ultimately as to come from within. We can give tasks to build it up but it has to start within the student #fcsvanguard
A3: I share my real life trials and triumphs so they don't think they are alone and that we don't all go thru things...it's about learning thru the process & celebrating small victories ...#inittowinit#fcsvanguard
A3) Encourage them by showing that everyone struggles with certain things and that if they push through regardless of how they feel about it that they will come out the other side with the knowledge that they can do it! #fcsvanguard
#FCSVanguard A3: There is so much power in sharing your story w/ your students. Let them know how hard you work to create meaningful lessons. They are bound to match your intensity.
A3 in my line of work, I have to start with teachers. Aiding them to change their growth mindset is vital and seeing the outcome first. #FCSvanguard@CLCRidgeview
A4 As the principal, I'm all about #FailForward in our building. Gotta be willing to take risks and fail if we're going to grow and change outcomes. #fcsvanguard
A4 Yaaaaasssss mistakes are welcome in my TAG classroom.! By telling my Ss that mistakes are normal, it gives them the freedom to be risk-takers & to be a participant in their learning. #fcsvanguard
A3: Establishing a positive environment, where mistakes are valued, making the work meaningful and relevant, teaching positive self talk, model persistence and start with Growth Mindset...#fcsvanguard
A3: (turning TwitterChat into a family affair, asking children & husband to chime in)!
Making mistakes a PART of the PROCESS. Celebrating attempts.
#fcsvanguard
Q4 Yes! We start the year discussing how everyone makes mistakes and how mistakes can help us learn. This is all part of creating a positive classroom environment. #fcsvanguard
A4: I talk to my students about how making mistakes leads to learning. Not all of my kids feel comfortable openly making mistakes, mainly b/c they want to be accepted by their peers. It's powerful, though, when leaders in my classroom openly embrace their mistakes. #fcsvanguard
I’m not in the classroom anymore, but I encourage people to make mistakes everyday. Even better share your mistakes with your students and colleagues! It’s how we grow. #fcsvanguard
A3: I don't believe in allowing scholars to Opt out. I offer them opportunities to participate in helping me to help them with their learning. I like for them to develop into problem solvers. #fcsvanguard
A3: I have my students create the problems or game for practicing a skill that we are working on. They love making task cards for each other.#fcsvanguard
A4: I try to do this by not giving a grade sometimes - just feedback, so Ss will improve the assignment before they get a grade...it's hard! #fcsvanguard
A4 It needs to be taught that you need to learn from your mistakes so in my classroom I hope that my students know this and that they will not be looked down upon for their mistakes #fcsvanguard
A4: Mistakes fuel 70% of my teaching these days. I don't even think that they are something our students notice because they are just the beginning of our "next" conversation. #fcsvanguard
I’m not in the classroom anymore, but I encourage people to make mistakes everyday. Even better share your mistakes with your students and colleagues! It’s how we grow. #fcsvanguard
A4: Absolutely. I used to have a dance teacher that said “wrong and strong!” All the time. If we were going to err, we should be committed to whatever we were doing! #fcsvanguard
A4: Continuously reinforce not only that it's ok to make mistakes, but also that we should try not to get upset at ourselves or others when we do #fcsvanguard
A4: Give examples of successful people they admire and read biography/story about their failures and effort it took to become successful. I love Salt in his shoes for that purpose #fcsvanguard
A4: Mistakes are looked at as learning experiences. By being honest with my students about my mistakes, I show them that it is a part of life and if we learn from those mistakes, we are growing. #fcsvanguard
A4: Absolutely. I used to have a dance teacher that said “wrong and strong!” All the time. If we were going to err, we should be committed to whatever we were doing! #fcsvanguard
A4: You have to make mistakes to learn. In labs, I tell my students write a result that reflects their data and not what they should have gotten #fcsvanguard
A4: We stopped marking things wrong in one math class. Now we circle the number so that we can go back and discuss it. Then once that's done, we add "kay" to it. Now that circle says, "Okay." #fcsvanguard
A4: absolutely!!! Little kids are so much more flexible that way. They love to find out what works and what doesn’t work through trial and error. #fcsvanguard
A4: Absolutely!!! If they were not, I’d be in TROUBLE! In the beginning of the year and almost everyday I stressed the importance of making mistakes. actually just had a conversation today. I have Ss who reads this at my kidney table daily #fcsvanguard
A5: Just because you don't know how to do something YET doesn't mean you will never know how to do it. Kids need to be honest about where they're at, but also know where they're going and that they CAN get there!
Q5) A growth mindset is important is teaching because that's what students are in school is to grow and learn about everything that they can. #fcsvanguard
A2: I think grit is learned through experience. We have to teach kids to TRY and fail and try and fail. Just like we have to! Kids who are willing to do that will change the world. #fcsvanguard
Perseverance is all about not giving up even when something is hard. If you don’t believe your effort can move you forward and help you grow, you won’t put in the effort to persevere. #fcsvanguard
I love this strategy! the X is my least favorite letter in the alphabet, due to all the mistakes that wasn't embraced. Imagine how students may feel seeing an X opposed to an "O" then kay. #fcsvanguard
A4: We stopped marking things wrong in one math class. Now we circle the number so that we can go back and discuss it. Then once that's done, we add "kay" to it. Now that circle says, "Okay." #fcsvanguard
A5: I feel like growth mindset and perseverance are interchangeable and one in the same, but TBH I'm looking forward to learning more about growth mindset #fcsvanguard
A4: Not a classroom if there are no mistakes to learn from-the lesson is always greater in the process-if we bypass them we may reach the finish line too quickly & miss the lesson-create a climate of uplifting even when we don't reach the mark #fcsvanguard
A4: There's tons of scientific research about disequilibrium (unease) being required to develop new adaptive responses. A certain amount is critical for new learning to occur. Too much stress can inhibit Learning, so balance is key. #fcsvanguard
A5: it’s extremely important. It let’s Ss and adults alike recognize how imperfect we are. Learning that giving up is not an option, only leaves you with one thing to do: persevere #fcsvanguard
A5: Not giving up is essential to life itself! If one thing doesn't happen the way you want, will you give up? What will that mean for you in the future? #fcsvanguard#growthmindset
Having a growth mindset is the key to success! The students all come from different places and being willing to accept new ideas and new learning #fcsvanguard
A4: Absolutely!!! If they were not, I’d be in TROUBLE! In the beginning of the year and almost everyday I stressed the importance of making mistakes. actually just had a conversation today. I have Ss who reads this at my kidney table daily #fcsvanguard
A5: having a growth mind set gives kids the ability to think through hard times and know that with a little practice it will get easier. It gives them positive self esteem too.#fcsvanguard
Q5: a growth mindset allows kids to see problems as opportunities, rather than right and wrong answers. This allows them to preservere, especially when content is difficult. #fcsvanguard
Growth mindset and perseverance go hand in hand. Students must understand that they are all still learning and growing daily in order to complete a difficult task and see it through until the end! We have to teach them that it's ok not to be able to do something..yet #fcsvanguard
Where I find the challenge is students come to me from the previous grade with the expectation that there is one right answer. So they wait for me to give them the answer. They aren’t comfortable with the “unease”.....we practice being uncomfortable a lot #fcsvanguard
To me, growth mindset is the belief that if you keep trying you can improve. Perseverance is the act of not giving up. Belief leads to action. #fcsvanguard
A5: I feel like growth mindset and perseverance are interchangeable and one in the same, but TBH I'm looking forward to learning more about growth mindset #fcsvanguard
A5: Understand that "Growth" is a result of Perseverance. Growth doesn't happen overnight, it takes patience, hardwork and when it all seems to fail GRIT.
A5:The term growth mindset if fairly new to students and giving them opportunities to differentiate fixed and growth mindsets comes w/exposing them to both so they can revert to the growth when they are stuck in the fixed #fcsvanguard
Perseverance is all about not giving up even when something is hard. If you don’t believe your effort can move you forward and help you grow, you won’t put in the effort to persevere. #fcsvanguard
A5: A growth mind set is important throughout your life, admitting they may not understand or quite comprehend something fully is important and should be encouraged. Tell them not to give up and everyone struggles sometimes and but not to give up #Fcsvanguard
A5: Growth mindset encourages premise that through effort and perseverance (grit) Ss will have many more aha moments, a love of learning is developed #fcsvanguard
A4: Yes, mistakes are welcome! Students are encouraged to keep digging for information that will elevate there learning and understanding. #fcsvanguard
A4 #fcsvanguard in math, we look at what we do correctly vs. how many or what we “miss.” Using language that we’re “getting stronger every day” with reading and writing stamina. Encouraging/acknowledging multiple or unique strategies
In @AVID4College, we set all kinds of goals, one of them being based on our GPA. I find it really helps kids stay focused on their grades! #fcsvanguard
My Ss set SMART goals after every unit and they base their measures on their previous units performance. They also set one short term goal weekly #fcsvanguard
A6: Looking forward to the answers to this one! I would love some effective strategies for goal setting with students, especially when I have 600 students I see once a week! #fcsvanguard
A6: In @AVID4College, we set all kinds of goals, one of them being based on our GPA. I find it really helps kids stay focused on their grades! #fcsvanguard
A6: Yes they should setting goal gives children more confidence when they reach or exceed their goals. Goal setting helps keep people on track and focussed #Fcsvanguard
A6) One of my favorite ways that I've seen to be effective is having students write their goals for the yea, month, and week and hang it in their desk, this way every time they see it they know what they are hoping to achieve #fcsvanguard
A6: My Ss set SMART goals after every unit and they base their measures on their previous units performance. They also set one short term goal weekly #fcsvanguard
A6: My students set goals in writing and reading, but if I'm being honest, I struggle to find time to revisit them and to ask them how they're doing with their goal. This is definitely an area of growth for me. #fcsvanguard
I set goals with my little 6th graders 2nd semester. I spend first semester talking to them about goals, my goals in what I want them to teach them. So I try to model. Then ask them to set their own goals 2nd semester. #fcsvanguard
A6: When I taught science, my Ss made a goal for each unit test. They then tracked their assessment grades (quizzes, etc leading up to the test) for a particular unit while also tracking their goal. #fcsvanguard
A6: My Ss set SMART goals after every unit and they base their measures on their previous units performance. They also set one short term goal weekly #fcsvanguard
A6: we set goals weekly, if not more. I also set goals for myself and share with my students! They love holding myself and their classmates accountable and enjoy seeing the progress that follows ❤
A6: Giving Ss agency - in media center we encourage them to select what they want to read without stressing over levels (within reason - lazy readers push that freedom lol) #fcsvanguard
A6: at the beginningof each unit show your students the standards and skills you are using. Let them come up with goals they hope to reach. #fcsvanguard
A6 Yes! To foster goal-setting you have to encourage class community - we are working toward goals TOGETHER or supporting each other in reaching our goals. I support Ss, Ss support each other. #fcsvanguard
A6: My students set goals in writing and reading, but if I'm being honest, I struggle to find time to revisit them and to ask them how they're doing with their goal. This is definitely an area of growth for me. #fcsvanguard
A6: My Ss set SMART goals after every unit and they base their measures on their previous units performance. They also set one short term goal weekly #fcsvanguard
A6) One of my favorite ways that I've seen to be effective is having students write their goals for the yea, month, and week and hang it in their desk, this way every time they see it they know what they are hoping to achieve #fcsvanguard
A6: I'm a goal setter so I kind of push it on them...I believe if you don't know where you wanna go, what u wanna get, or do, you'll get lost in tryna move forward #fcsvanguard
We set behavior and academic goals. For academic goals student have graphs to graph their data. Data is also displayed without names in the classroom so students are able to see where they are on the chart and how they compare to the class, which provides motivation! #fcsvanguard
A6: reflecting to the time of teaching, I didn't really have them set goals I set the goals for some of them. You will be "successful" " quitting is no an option" things like that. I wish I would have. #fcsvanguard#reflectiveeducator
A6 Certainly happens at Holcomb Bridge. I think it's better to set short-term, or intermediate, goals. Kids to to see success more readily. #fcsvanguard
I try to have my kids set a goal at the beginner game of class. Sometimes it’s something simple like, “Stay awake.” Sometimes it’s more like, “add details to my writing”. Then I have them revisit their goals at the end of class to see if they were met. #fcsvanguard
A6: To set goals we have to have a progression of some kind visible. Students have to be able to say, "I'm here, I want to be there, and here is what I will do to get there." #fcsvanguard
Beyond academics, Ss vote on a weekly goal on Mondays that we’ll work on throughout the week - self-control in the hall, keeping our room and space neat, whatever they feel we need to work on. Ss support each other all week to work toward the goal. #fcsvanguard
A5: Always keep the focus on growth instead of a certain grade and all will be fine. Encourage students to learn from their mistakes and improve at their own pace. #fcsvanguard
I meet with students after their weekly assessment and they analyze their performance to find their own areas of weakness. Then they record in their IMN their goal for the week.
A6: I sometimes have my students set a goal just for the class that day. Small, manageable, and achievable. They revisit at the end if class. #fcsvanguard
A6 I love this and did when I still taught In a Special Ed classroom. Now that I’m in the Media Center, I don’t really get to... now I’m thinking I should. #fcsvanguard
A5: Having a growth mindset helps students to learn from their mistakes and encourages them to be comfortable taking risks and overcoming challenges #fcsvanguard
A6: We’ve set goals.I have Ss who have made personal goals, but I don’t know if all understand that “language.” I would love to be more consistent in recognizing them as goals and then celebrate when they’ve made them more frequently. Short term goals are necessary. #fcsvanguard
A6: goal setting is essential to student growth. Everyone wants to know where they are and where are they expected to be. With this knowledge, students can focus their energy toward individualized achievement. #moreaccountability#fcsvanguard
A5 #fcsvanguard Everything any of us can do we didn’t know how to do at one point. Walking, writing, cooking, karate, everything! We had to work hard and persevere to get there but look at how worth it the hard work was!
#fcsvanguard A6 Students need to learn how to set the goals. They think just putting down they will get all A’s in a good goal. Or my favorite “study more”....need teach growth goals....and how to measure them.
A6: I've found that small, short term goals usually work better with my elem. students. They are successful faster, and then get excited about setting and meeting another goal. #fcsvanguard
A3: I teach growth mindset at the beginning of the year using videos and read alouds. It continues through the year. I also do a weekly Keep the Quote. The student who works at it the most throughout the week wins it and keeps the poster #fcsvanguard
You have to have goals present. How do you give feedback if it isn't based on a goal? Otherwise you are just flooding students with random advice. That doesn't stick. #fcsvanguard
"relationship status" in the Periodic Network... students had to pass the chemical reactions quiz before they could be in a relationship... motivated to learn! #fcsvanguard#Steelers
A6: Our students definitely set goals that include the steps to get them there. We revisit them throughout the school year. To foster goal-setting, teach setting SMART goals, both short and long term. #fcsvanguard
A7 just today one of my students was convinced he could not write a fable. I insisted he could and gave him examples. He eventually chose to stay and finish it instead go to the library, which he loves! #fcsvanguard
A6: Based upon the learning objectives, students can set their own goals with the teacher. Setting goals can be fostered by recognizing students who meet them. #fcsvanguard
A7: when kids believe that you are invested in THEM they will persevere with material that they may not care about for YOU. During the journey, it becomes for them as well. #ConnectionsMeanEverything#fcsvanguard
A7: I often tell them to ask their older siblings to see their homework. It is easy to find connections between the math. I also try to find real world connections that relate to their interests #fcsvanguard
I can think of times when students persevered with content they weren’t jazzed about because they were invested in accomplishing a goal of improving and conquering the material. #fcsvanguard
A7: I always relate it back to their education and about being the best they can be. I try to get them invested in their education and learning. #fcsvanguard
A7: Yes Implementing true Inquiry in science. Giving them a question, not the answer and having them work at it, then WRITE about it! It was hard, but I told them to stick with it and TRY. They ended up loving it! The 2nd ADI went so much better. I saw GRIT grow :-) #fcsvanguard
A6: we set goals for writing and reading. They also set goals for class Dojo with rewards. We revisit the goals when we meet in small groups. I tell them about the goals I set for myself too! #fcsvanguard
A7: I once held a Socratic Seminar about Great Expectations. There were kids who hadn’t read at all, but they sure got into sharing their opinions on some of the topics. Not sure that counts as persevering, but it was something, anyway, LOL #fcsvanguard
A7: Now occasionally I have to lean on bribery😳🙃to get them through...but sometimes when they actually prove themselves wrong and they do well it's gets easier for the next time #fcsvanguard
A7: OH Yes. I have had plenty of 8th grade students walk in afraid of physical science. I strongly believe in positive culture. My Passion for this Subject + My Students + Your Hard Work = Success. Students knowing you STILL believe in them even when they "Fail" #fcsvanguard
A7. Make the early goals smaller and easily attainable. Then the goals needing grit are not so far away. I did it with writing and short-answer response. Those small goals made term papers less daunting. #fcsvanguard
A7 My 3rd graders really showed perseverance as they prepped for the GMAS last year. The majority of them wanted to score distinguished or proficient so badly that even though the material was not interesting they stayed focused with the end goal in mind #fcsvanguard
A6: My students set goals and goal setting can be fostered by creating a culture and climate in the classroom that embraces and believes in it. #fcsvanguard
"when kids believe that you are invested in THEM they will persevere with material that they may not care about for YOU." #relationships#mypaycheck#fcsvanguard
A7: when kids believe that you are invested in THEM they will persevere with material that they may not care about for YOU. During the journey, it becomes for them as well. #ConnectionsMeanEverything#fcsvanguard
Q7 Yes. When I assisted in helping students make real world connections....they dug deep. They were able to see the benefits of learning new material. #FCSVanguard@CLCRidgeview
A7: Metaphors, metaphors, metaphors. When it is something that doesn't peek their interest, there is something that you can relate or connect it to that will. Sometimes you just have to be very creative (Branches of Gov.) #fcsvanguard
A&. That is almost a daily task with me and my Ss. I always smile at my students to let them know I care and that they can do any task if they listen and be a leader #fcsvanguard
A7: in the past, as a TAG instructor, my students would become motivated to learn concepts they did not know after completing the data dig process of a benchmark #fcsvanguard
A7 I use to have to try to make social studies exciting because my students and myself never found it interesting so I would have to have creative ways to teach the subject #fcsvanguard
A7: with young students, turn information into a story! @PitchHillMusic "Pitch Hill" revolutionized the way I teach reading music. Each pitch is a different character! Ss LOVE it!!! #fcsvanguard
A7 #fcsvanguard Choice and voice and incorporating fun apps like @ChatterPixIt - Ben Franklin isn’t exactly exciting for firsties but pretending to be BF and speaking about yourself via chatterpix is!
I think the success of this has an element of students trusting the teacher in guiding them on the journey. If the students trust you have their best interests in mind, they will persevere through the “boring”. #fcsvanguard
A8: It is never too early. Even very young students can be taught how to persevere. And while it's harder to internalize and change when you're older, I want to believe that it's never too late. #fcsvanguard
A3 #fcsvanguard Our principal read “What Do You Do With a Problem?” to every class to kick off the year - growth mindset, perserverance, the power of “yet” are common language at school!
A8: I dont think it ever too late to be taught perseverance, actually i think people have to relearn it through out their lives- never give up never give in - Mr. Sheridan 8th grade math teacher favorite saying :)
#Fcsvanguard
A7: Teaching SS to 4th graders wasn't easy, but each unit I would try and find some way to connect it to their lives. If they could see the relevance to their own life, they had a better attitude about pushing through and learning the material #fcsvanguard
A8 It’s never too early or too late. I. Still learning how to apply it to different scenarios that happen in my life. The earlier the better. #fcsvanguard
A8: Never too early (think babies learning to walk!) I also believe it's never too late to teach/learn perseverance, but takes a more concerted effort to break a fixed mindset if that's all you've experienced. #fcsvanguard
A8: it’s never too early to teach perseverance. I think the early we start, the better off kids are. It will be easier and easier for them to have a growth mindset as they get older. #fcsvanguard
A1: Grit is determination in everything that you do...whether it is taking something that is easy for you to the next level or persevering through the challenges. #fcsvanguard
