Jonathan, SW MI, AP of Lakeshore Middle School & looking forward to raising our level of leadership tonight by "Showing the LOVE" as Leaders". Favorite candy phrase is "BE KIND" #MEMSPAchat
A1: Never underestimate the power of a hand written note! A thank u for going the extra mile, sharing with the rest of the staff something great you saw in their classroom, sending them to conference they'd enjoy, or just a simple "You Rock! Glad you are on our TEAM!" #MEMSPAchat
A1-Even with so many incredible forms of communication, you can't beat a handwritten note. I write teachers personalized notes and hand deliver. I think the time is appreciated :) #MEMSPAchat
A1) The 1st 6 weeks and last 6 weeks can be the toughest, so I put fresh tulips on each teachers desk at the beginning of each week..for 6 weeks. 1 single stem every Monday can bring a smile. :) #MEMSPAchat
A1: It's in the little things, every interaction...support...words/actions of encouragement...coffee at QPD...notes of gratitude...tokens of apprication...support...leadership opportunities.
#MEMSPAchat
A2) Being relatively new to the building, I try to take time at the major holidays (Christmas) to put together little holiday packages for my team of 6 to show the love and appreciation. #MEMSPAchat
A1: Visit to the classrooms and providing constructive feedback. Give verbal kudos during morning video announcements. Make myself available during meeting with parents to support the teacher and the child. Provide lunches, snacks, and gifts throughout the year. #MEMSPAchat
#memspachat I start the year by putting notes of appreciation on their desk or in their mailbox. We follow it up with Gratitude walks on a as needed basis
A1: This week I did a week of love for my staff! Mon: comfort food, Tues: comfy clothes, Wed: no meeting, Thurs: all kinds of popcorn flavors and Free massage and Fri: drinks for days! #MEMSPAchat
A1: Getting to know the staff on a personal level, bringing the enthusiasm/energy level to make everyone feel like they’re you’re favorite person. Another idea is ABCD awards (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty) #MEMSPAchat
Are you attending #MACUL18? Are you an administrator? Have you registered for the SIG-Admin pre-conference session? Hurry! The price is discounted through Feb. 21. https://t.co/RYVz7cS42C
A2: asking "how can I help you" during a rough season in life, along w/ others I've set up food schedules after a surgery, wrote notes to a staff members kid on college acceptance, donated to passion projects, also, and it's huge, be vulnerable, we are people, too! #MEMSPAchat
A2: Listen and give feedback. Show them you care by getting back to them in a timely manner and following through!
Show you care by investing! Communicate!
#MEMSPAchat
A2: When those "family" things come up, support them and give them the "time" (release, coverage, help) that they need. Pay it forward. It shows your human side when you can give them that support. #MEMSPAchat
I feel like fostering a safe, creative, passionate, and compassionate community is the best way to #ShowTheLove I always respect others when they show that they care for me and my boundaries (self-care). #MEMSPAchat
A2: The key to showing value to staff is first knowing our staff. What is important to them? What is going on with them? What help from you would they value the most? #MEMSPAchat
The Real A2) Get to know folks on a personal basis and converse about what happens outside of the building. Support them in anyway possible with family needs arise. #MEMSPAchat
A2-Ss achievement is important, of course; data, scores, accountability but just like our Ss, you must build relationships 1st, you wont see the results. Same for Ts. They have to know you care about them! Help, cover, ask Qs/listen to A's #MEMSPAchat
A2: Showing compassion and flexibility. Taking the time to listen to their concerns with full attention. Being aware of and inquiring about their personal lives. Essentially, making sure that they know you are a person first, too and finding a way to connect. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Q1/Q2 are so intertwined. The heart is in creating caring relationships based on respect & "love," If I care about my staff it should resonate in everything-whether I'm relieving anxiety about leaving early 4 a necessary appointment or supporting prof. learning. #memspachat
A2: Value Ts as ppl by connecting as ppl, not just colleagues. Express an interest in knowing what makes them tick... Also, value ideas of Ts shows that they're valued as ppl. Encourage T voice & high expectations to build rlshp in work environment #MEMSPAchat
A2: Covering classes so they can be there for big moments in their loved ones lives. Getting to know staff and their families is so important. #MEMSPAchat
A2: It's important to remember that CULTURAL COMPETENCE is not just about race/gender it is about convo's/experiences..Being able to recognize/embrace behaviors that empower/Prevent. from and INDIVIDUAL level.. #MEMSPAchat
A2: it’s important to model self care and encourage it. If you see a staff member who needs time/a moment, tell them you’re there to help and actually mean it. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Play with them at recess, dance to music with them when they arrive for the day, LOTS of hugs, smiles and high fives. Show them that there is no place you'd rather be. #MEMSPAchat
A3 LEAD Tickets for *Lead Responsibly, *Everyone Makes Good Choices *Always Safe & * Do the Respectful Thing. My favorite: Monthly Lunch with the Principal Celebrations
A3: inquiring about student lives outside of school and bringing up events they brought up in past convo, shows them you were listening, you "hear" them...when Ss fail, ask questions and listen, responses may surprise us #MEMSPAchat
A3: Play with them at recess, dance to music with them when they arrive for the day, LOTS of hugs, smiles and high fives. Show them that there is no place you'd rather be. #MEMSPAchat
A3: High Fives and Hugs in the morning. Meet them at the door. Lunch with the Principal every Thursday....and I do this weird thing at lunch on their Birthday. If I am out of the building on that day, oh boy #MEMSPAchat
A3: Golden Tickets for exemplary behavior, Fly Tickets for kindness/responsibility/respect, weekly “Hawk of the Week assemblies, and an expectation that we will build positive relationships with all students. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Students must be know that YOU authentically care.... and the #1 evaluation tool of that is RESULTS...If you are not getting positive results, you have to set up strategies to investigate... It has to be done... #MEMSPAchat
Q4 is on its way...don't forget to interact with one another and find new folks to follow, learn from, and connect with. The smartest person in the chat is the chat! #MEMSPAchat
A3) PRIDE tickets. I invite Ss to have lunch where we can just talk about life. I share with Ss the explicit positive actions and traits that I have observed on a daily basis. I try to be predictable for my Ss and co-workers. #MEMSPAchat
A3-weekly drawing of "caught being good" tickets & calling names on announcements, monthly teacher chosen awards at a school a wide assembly, and just being out and about chatting them up and giving high 5's/fist bumps/hugs as often as I can! #MEMSPAchat
A3: In partnership with our clinic, we are “Throwing kindness like confetti!” Teachers acknowledge kind deeds by students and each week they select students for a special breakfast. #memspachat
A3: My 2 fav are greeting all students everyday as they come in the door. Ss know we make eye contact, say something like “Happy Monday” and shake hands. Second is eating lunch with different Ss everyday. I have a calendar that kids see #MEMSPAchat
A3: A variety...Students of the Month get donuts with the Administrators, PRIDE passes, positively PRIDE notes, shirts/recognition in class, Positive contacts home by every teacher, and daily interactions (maybe some surprise froyo at lunch).
#MEMSPAchat

A4: Previous district held senior luncheons at various times throughout the year. Current district provides meals at T-giving and support during Christmas for food/gifts. Working on bringing presentations to district to help families help their Ss w/ social media. #MEMSPAchat
A3: being present at drop off/pickup, breakfast, lunch, recess, join in on classroom brain breaks and make a point to visit all rooms each day (this is a work in progress) #MEMSPAchat#LMcohort9
A3: My favorite time of the day is lunch with the kids. I can check in on kids and encourage them. I try to get to every table to chat with all the students. It is a good time to get to know the kids and have meaningful conversations. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Family Reading Night, Family Bowling Night, Open Pool Night, Cardboard Carnival, Cookies with Santa, Truck-or-treat, Daddy/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance, 5th grade honors night . #MEMSPAchat
A3) We would hold a town hall every month and celebrate what is right in the world. Always surprises for staff and students! Golden Dust pan award, Safety Pin, RAK's, Parent surprises, etc. So much fun! Family atmosphere as a school. #Memspachat
I sneak up behind them while they are eating and shout as loud as I can "HEEEEEEY everybody, it is "name"'s birthday.!" Then I let them pick how we sing it. Zombie, Pirate, underwater, robot, whisper...something fun and silly and it makes them feel special . #MEMSPAchat
A4 - Welcome them into our school! It's one of the best ways to build that partnership! We have one event each month where we welcome them into our school. All types of events and we try to touch different people in the family and community #memspachat
A4-We have an AMAZING PTO that holds monthly events! I love bringing my own family and mixing with families and Ss on a different level! We also invite families to our monthly BAM assemblies (Ss awards) #MEMSPAchat

A4: We just started a Random Acts of Kindness system. Each student takes home two tickets and when they do something nice for someone out in public, they give a ticket. Those who receive a ticket are asked to share their experience on social media, and pay it forward! #MEMSPAchat

A4: We "invite" them to see learning in action by posting lots of videos, have fun family nights, and we don't miss an opportunity to thank our families and tell them that we love their kids and love our jobs! #MEMSPAchat
A5: starting in the fall I joined a gym. Only get there 3 days a week for an hour at a time, but it is huge for my mental health. Disappointed when I miss a day and never regret going. #MEMSPAchat
Free, but we ask for food donations to give to our backpack program. Pizza, water and candy available for purchase so a small profit is usually made. #MEMSPAchat
A5: try and plan times to connect with friends to sustain relationships that have been built over the years. Looking forward to a "soda" with my man @dpaq1 soon! #MEMSPAchat
A4: pto does amazing family events, staff puts on Parent Info Nights, and monthly Red Carpet Rally (7 habits/ss recognitions) to name a few but always looking for more ways to involve parents #MEMSPAchat
A5: I am in the gym every morning (follow my tweets and be sure to tag your accountability partners) and I follow the lead of a great friend and mentor..."Read. Read. Read", @Syndee_Sue#MEMSPAchat
A5) Taking the time to relax and talk with @Teach_MrsB each night, scheduling the occasional week night that isn't a work night. Having non-negotiables. #MEMSPAchat
"VIP" day where students can bring any important person to them (lots of grandparents), "Ladies and Lads" bowling to balance out "Daddy/Daughter" dance. All-school tailgate at a football game. Gingerbread house making is big for students in our lower grades.
A5: Find the “why” in everything you do, so you can act with purpose. Take brain breaks. Make sure you love what you do, because “Working hard at something you don’t love is called stress. Working hard at something you do love is called passion.” -Simon Sinek #MEMSPAchat#LeadLAP
A5) Try & have the calendar done for the following school year about 80% done to give to staff in May. I schedule in my personal "date nights" for the year & make them non-negotiable. I encourage them to do the same. We work the other 20% around us. #MEMSPAchat
A5: I do not have my work emails go to my phone. That way I can unwind at night, hang out with my twins and hubby, free from work distractions. Once my girls go to bed, I can sign-in and catch up on evening emails while catching up on some of my favorite TV shows. #MEMSPAchat
I model what I preach to our staff. There are times where you need to leave school earlier than normal due to family. Don't feel guilty. Always, #FamilyFirst. Make sure that I set up times in my evenings to explore hobbies, interests, family, workouts, faith, friends #memspachat
A4: Celebrating partnerships in our blog, Muffins w/ Mom and Donuts w/ Dad (new titles needed!), Science Night, BTSN, and family fun nights. We love spending time with our #epcrocks families! #MEMSPAchat
Q5: A huge gift with @MEMSPA and @debbiemcfalone has given us - a focus on self care! #MEMSPAmatters - this is tough but rewarding work!! Meditation, boundaries, hobbies, time with family, and laughter fill my tank!
#MEMSPAchat
So inspired by all the family pics! Unbelievable how this has such a profound impact! Love this & thank you all! Love the #MEMSPAchat family and the support everyone shows! #PositivityUnknown2Mankind
A7: Pull my weight around the house, no gender roles at TEAM Swegles HQ. Listen more than I talk with Angela (her convo with 5 and 2 yr old each day isn't much) Ask what can I do for you and actually do it! Say yes to the kids more than I say no. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Put the phone down, really listen to them, look for their strengths, do random acts of kindness, check myself when I am losing patience. I am a work in progress--trying to get better every day. #MEMSPAchat
A7: I always leave the troubling things at work, AT WORK! I never bring that home with me. I vent to @bradrobb and others. Never family or home. Everything is great cause we make it great! #Mindset#MEMSPAchat
I've found that having a work phone creates a boundary that I love. Emails, texts, phone calls all go to it but it gets turned off at some point in the evening and doesn't really get checked until the morning. #MEMSPAchat
A7-I play games, read books, act silly and have a bedtime routine that work will not impact, no matter what. I stay up late to finish work as to not impact my kiddies! #MEMSPAchat
A8: 1) Write at least 2 hand written notes to staff. 2) check in with 5 students who have been doing a great job and deserve positive recognition. 3) Have intentional quality conversation with family members, about life, not about what saw on social media. #MEMSPAchat
A8 - When I first get into the office, write down 3-5 small things I want to give staff a compliment on during the day. Been doing it this week and it's been great to share so many positives during the dog days of February #memspachat
@JWSwegles Jonathan, your positive spirit and enthusiasm exudes from your soul my man! Thanks for focusing us on the importance of loving ourselves, our families, and each other! Blessed to know you! You change lives each and every day as an outstanding educator! #MEMSPAchat
A8: Be excited to see them! I also leave messages of positivity on our lounge whiteboard. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re deep. People seem to enjoy them, and they contribute their own as well! #MEMSPAchat
Can I just please end this #MEMSPAchat with my schools theme this year. So fitting....
#PositivityUnknown2Mankind
