Brent from Magrath fresh off a good day of talking books and reading books. Ready to chat about a great book with my #g2great friends and the GREAT @colbysharp and @donalynbooks
Hello #G2Great! So happy to be here for tonight's chat! I'm Sarah from Buffalo, and I love bringing books of all kinds to my English 9, English 11, and Journalism students.
Brent from Magrath fresh off a good day of talking books and reading books. Ready to chat about a great book with my #g2great friends and the GREAT @colbysharp and @donalynbooks
Hello Everyone! Krista from Lit Coach Connection here in upstate NY! I have had this chat on my calendar for months! So excited to learn with all of you! #G2great
A1: A person becomes a better reader, because they get to know who they are as readers over time and explore different literary works. Reading can be addictive, once you get your groove on w/ the books, it's hard to put them down!
#LitBankStreet#G2Great#GameChanger#BookAccess
It makes me so happy to see librarians at our chat Mary especially on a night like tonight. You are so important to the access process. So grateful or you! #G2great
A1 We can no longer afford to ignore decades of research on the role of volume. We must become vocal advocates who consistently highlight this important message as often and as loudly as we can. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A1 Just like learning to swim, you have to be IN the pool to learn. You have to be IN the book to learn to read. Providing lots and lots and lots of books provides lots and lots and lots of chances for success! #G2Great@colbysharp@donalynbooks
A1
Books (magazines, collections of short stories, digital/print, journals) are a gift that some Ss never receive, they are our water, food, life. Get our Ss pumped with great reading. #G2great
A1: Kids have a chance to be curious and to find out what kinds of books they are interested in so that they can develop an interest in and love for reading
#LitBankStreet#G2Great
A1 Just like learning to swim, you have to be IN the pool to learn. You have to be IN the book to learn to read. Providing lots and lots and lots of books provides lots and lots and lots of chances for success! #G2Great@colbysharp@donalynbooks
We did not refer to any people (including ourselves) as game changers. For too long, providing book access at school has been the work of heroic educators spending their own funds. Any system depending on heroes to make it work is a bad system. The system needs to change.#g2great
A1: Filling classroom libraries with a multitude of genres, and topics is a reading invitation to ALL learners. Who likes going to a restaurant with limited choices on the menu? #G2Great
A1: I couldn't agree more with @colbysharp & @donalynbooks about access to bks! When I was a reading specialist, the most important job I had was connecting readers to bks. I invested in my own library & was a passionate book "peddler." #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A1: I think of it as "The game teaches the game." Kids need lots of practice reading authentic, engaging text in order to become good readers. #G2Great
It's true, but for some reason so many teachers don't believe it. Is it because teachers feel the need to always be doing something themselves? I don't know. What I do know that is reading more makes us better readers. Period. #G2Great
A1: If you want them to get better at basketball you get them a ball and a hoop. If you want them to dominate in hockey, you buy them skates and a stick. Gymnastics: you send them to the best gym. If you want them to read: flood them with books. #G2Great
A1: Books are the heart of the classroom...those treasured during read aloud altogether and those being savored alone during independent reading ❤️ as a teacher I strive to book match relentlessly and give access in creative ways #G2Great
#G2great A 1 it is plain and simple, books are tried and true. They let us soar to other worlds and places. Sometimes when we add too many “fancy” strategies etc. the pure simple joy of reading can get lost in the analysis of fancy attachments.

@hayhurst3, @donalynbooks, @colbysharp, @DrMaryHoward, @franmcveigh, @vrkimmel, @brennanamy
A1: When my students have access to books they have the ability to find “just the right book” to turn them into life-long readers #g2great#bookaccessforall
A1 - Book access is the great equalizer. Your race, gender, age, nor your socioeconomic level serve as a barrier. You get to step into someone else’s shoes and step into someone else’s heart. #G2Great
A1: Absolutely! I would add that as James Britton said: “literacy floats on a sea of talk.” Talk about coupled with access to text is unstoppable! #G2Great
#G2Great A1 I think we sometimes have a tendency to make the simple complex, Reading is complex, but turning kids on to books they can get lost in, well if you have the will you can find away
A1- A child can travel around the world, all from the comfort of their own house, their classroom, their library; just from reading a book. Access to a plethora of multicultural and multi-genre books is a profoundly positive #GameChanger for Ss reading growth... #g2great (p1)
We did not refer to any people (including ourselves) as game changers. For too long, providing book access at school has been the work of heroic educators spending their own funds. Any system depending on heroes to make it work is a bad system. The system needs to change.#g2great
A1 Access creates equity! Access to books in their hands, access to books with diversity and Multiple cultures reflected. It’s necessary- especially for our kiddos in poverty #G2Great
A:1 Kids need to read books to know they love to read. Lots of books so they can decide what kind of genre they like to read. The more books they can get their hands on the more they will love to read. #G2Great
A1- In my house we have baskets of books in every room. They're always within reach. Why, at schools then, are they sometimes relegated to just certain times in certain places? The more exposure the more chance of finding that book that speaks to you. #g2great
#G2great A 1 it is plain and simple, books are tried and true. They let us soar to other worlds and places. Sometimes when we add too many “fancy” strategies etc. the pure simple joy of reading can get lost in the analysis of fancy attachments.

A1: I truly believe the more kids have access to books and read the books they do become better. Practice makes you better - better at reading, comprehending, making connections, etc. It’s worth the time to make the time in your room for this. #G2Great
A1 Talent isn’t a gift, it’s a habit. True with everything. Increase volume, increase quality (of) conversation, students/adults learn. That’s how it happens folks. I truly believe in this recipe. It’s the foundation of all great work. #G2Great
A1 I actually think it IS groundbreaking considering that so many educators still don’t acknowledge it – not just in theory but practice. Some things should be at the center of all we do, and this is certainly one! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A1: Access to books = options, choice, and the chance to find a love you never knew you needed in your life. When books start to pull you in there is no place you’d rather be. #G2Great@ScholasticEd
A1: I totally agree with that quote! Children need to have access to not only become better readers, but to explore their different interests and be exposed to the world of reading. #g2great#LitBankStreet
A1: No truer words. It’s just not rocket science. Books in the hands of kids is where it all must begin. We have to level the playing field so that all students have the equal access they deserve. #G2Great
A1: being back in K, I’ve so enjoyed watching my kids become lovers of literacy. Immersion in everything literacy and providing choice has moved my kids forward. #g2great
A1: It is also confusing as all heck to me that people will spend crap loads of money are GARBAGE like AR but think a beautiful hardcover book for 20 bucks is too much...Sigh Today I bought more books to counter the crazy. #G2Great
A1: Access to books = options, choice, and the chance to find a love you never knew you needed in your life. When books start to pull you in there is no place you’d rather be. #G2Great@ScholasticEd
A1 - Book access is the great equalizer. Your race, gender, age, nor your socioeconomic level serve as a barrier. You get to step into someone else’s shoes and step into someone else’s heart. #G2Great

A1: I think by providing students with books and the opportunity to read establishes a positive outlook on the act of reading. Thus, enabling students to be curious and motivate them to read. #Litbankstreet#G2Great
That’s why we wrote Game Changer! We are trying to build systemic support for libraries and librarians, books in classrooms and homes, and children’s right to engaging, relevant books! #g2great
A1 Once we plant the seeds of this message, it’s crucial we then support Ts in nurturing & bringing access seeds to life on a day-to-day, classroom-to-classroom, and school-to-school basis. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A1: If you want them to get better at basketball you get them a ball and a hoop. If you want them to dominate in hockey, you buy them skates and a stick. Gymnastics: you send them to the best gym. If you want them to read: flood them with books. #G2Great
It makes perfect sense! Choice and access foster reading identities and motivation! Nothing says "we value reading" more than classroom and school libraries that are well stocked with books that students want to read. #G2Great
A2: Additionally, when my students have access to diverse books they can build their emotional intelligence & empathize with their peers #G2Great#BookAccessForAll#weneeddiversebooks
A1 This month I have been asking students to consider why sometimes people in power would try to keep other people from an education, ex. Ruby Bridges, Malala, Frederick Douglass. Access to books is everything. #G2Great
A1: No truer words. It’s just not rocket science. Books in the hands of kids is where it all must begin. We have to level the playing field so that all students have the equal access they deserve. #G2Great
A1: Access to books = options, choice, and the chance to find a love you never knew you needed in your life. When books start to pull you in there is no place you’d rather be. #G2Great@ScholasticEd
A1: You get better with practice. Increase access can lead to increased conversations about books which creates a buzz around books and reading. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll

A 2 Have a class library with 1000 (goal 1500-2000) books and negotiate with school librarian that besides weekly visits, a student can visit library any day to look for books to read. #g2great
A2: Increase visits in their school libraries. Then eventually take a nice field trip to a public library (if possible) so the students know that they can have access to a library that doesn't have to be inside their school. That can be a start :) #LitBankStreet#G2Great
Yes! Let’s fill our rooms and Ss book boxes/bags with texts. If your are looking for ways to build your library, look at these suggestions from @Kari_Yates#G2greathttps://t.co/gueRPpfWT2
Absolutely @missmolly523 and when you, as the teacher, are passionate about what you are reading, you are modeling booklove for your students. #G2Great#LitBankStreet

This is absolute truth! I would add that it cannot just be any books, but books that kids are genuinely interested in reading. We run the risk of creating literate alliterates when kids do not have access to books they value. #G2Great
A1 Talent isn’t a gift, it’s a habit. True with everything. Increase volume, increase quality (of) conversation, students/adults learn. That’s how it happens folks. I truly believe in this recipe. It’s the foundation of all great work. #G2Great

A1 Hi all! I missed the start time!!! Emily from MI, and I teach 2nd grade. Colby and Donalynn’s book really made me think differently about book access. It’s not enough to have great books in my classroom. Somehow I’ve got to get them into kids’ homes. #G2Great
A1: If you want them to get better at basketball you get them a ball and a hoop. If you want them to dominate in hockey, you buy them skates and a stick. Gymnastics: you send them to the best gym. If you want them to read: flood them with books. #G2Great
A2 We know that summer access to books is key and that summer slide is a reality for kids who can least afford it. We can’t wait until summer is around the corner. It has to be a priority from the beginning of the school year! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
Q2: Get books into kids hands with creativity - make sure they leave for the summer armed with books. I've worked with teachers who loaded their cars with books in the summer, and told kids to meet them in the school parking lot. #G2great
A2 provide a method for students to borrow books from your library whenever they need. A few years ago I was part of a group that would meet Ss at school over the summer, read with them and allow them to take home several books for the week. #G2Great@colbysharp@donalynbooks
A2 Have books in EVERY classroom that Ss choose to read and want to read. Also in school & public library. Don't close library in May for inventory. Open up & empty shelves in summer - send books home.
Summer lunch/school = book access!
#g2great#bookaccessforall
A2: Book shares or swaps, have families bring in books when they are done and set up a place where kids can take and leave books
#LitBankStreet#G2Great
#G2great Laura, I don’t even know how many books I have. They are in every spare corner and cubby hole of my classroom. I love it- books falling all over the place. 😊
A2: Increase visits in their school libraries. Then eventually take a nice field trip to a public library (if possible) so the students know that they can have access to a library that doesn't have to be inside their school. That can be a start :) #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A2: It's a whole school, whole community endeavor! Students, teachers, families, librarians....Access is the key ingredient- making sure not only books- but interesting, chosen books are in hand all 365 days #G2Great
A2: School districts must commit to spending more $ on authentic 📚 than textbooks/workbooks. Send those 📚 home w Ss. Although it’s nice to see them return, be prepared to replace them. If a S doesn’t return a book, it’s just another book they have access to at home. #G2Great
A1: If you want them to get better at basketball you get them a ball and a hoop. If you want them to dominate in hockey, you buy them skates and a stick. Gymnastics: you send them to the best gym. If you want them to read: flood them with books. #G2Great
A2: Invest in bks as a school & not programs. Send bks home during the summer & during the year. Libraries need to be alive with new, exciting, & diverse bks. Librarians r key in helping to peddle books! Ask for bk. donations from everywhere! #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A2 You make it a priority you gather books, you write grants, you talk with admins and PTA you do whatever it takes. You cozy up to the librarians they are amazing people for sure. Together we can make it happen. #G2Great#bookaccessforall
A1- YES!!! It’s all about access! Access to choice books, more exposure to vocabulary, & time to just read. This helps them build stamina & figure out what types of books they love. Exploring genres and developing a love for 📚Let’s let them read! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
In Prosper, we've been blessed with leadership who value libraries. We're working to stock classrooms and literacy libraries with amazing books! #G2Great
A2 For increased summer access, our Elem. campus teamed up with our local food pantry to provide weekly bags of books delivered along with food to families in need. #G2Great
Teachers and admin need to prove to kids that reading is a priority for all, including themselves. That means constantly promoting what they read. #G2Great
#G2great A2: Do whatever you have to Give away free books, summer library circulation, public library cards, e-books and online books, schools provide summer reading books. . . #tlchat#ctcasl
A2: Advocate to get books into your classroom!!! Advocate for summer access! Breaks! Etc! @donalynbooks has the $ amount it costs to send kiddos home with summer books! I remember you mentioning it last year at the Reading Summit! Find the funds! We must ADVOCATE!
#G2Great
Libraries saved me as a kid. I didn’t do good in cookie cutter classes and skipped a lot. Didn’t have parent support. But I read and librarians gave me book after book. #G2Great
A:2 Our school district start a book mobile last summer. They drive around the city, post where they will be on what day and kids can come to the van and choose a book to read for the week. #G2Great
#G2great@sd42 has a classroom library inquiry. Teachers work with their students to sort their class library and identify gaps in their library. We then begin to fill these gaps
A2 We know that summer access to books is key and that summer slide is a reality for kids who can least afford it. We can’t wait until summer is around the corner. It has to be a priority from the beginning of the school year! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A2: https://t.co/BjbM0asrJU Classroom libraries
2. Let kids take the books home.
3. Help get books in homes.
4. Give kids free library cards
5. Stop with fees
Shall I continue? #G2great
Today subbing with 3yrs, you become their undisputed pal reading books they choose, to them. Yesterday in 2nd grade you open the world of #kindness#empathy with a read aloud #G2Great
A2: Advocate to get books into your classroom!!! Advocate for summer access! Breaks! Etc! @donalynbooks has the $ amount it costs to send kiddos home with summer books! I remember you mentioning it last year at the Reading Summit! Find the funds! We must ADVOCATE!
#G2Great
Before summer or breaks, get books into the hands of kids. Let them bring 2, 3, 4, or more books home with them. Give them an application for a library card. Better yet, take them on a field trip to the library. #G2Great
A2: Finding ways to get books into communities, book swaps/donations, leave them at doctor's offices, dentists, hair salons/barber shops - anywhere kids wait and have some time to read #g2great#BookAccessForAll
A2: Make sure students and families are aware of the places they can get free books. Partner with the public library, send kids home with high-interest books to read during the summer. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A2: There are great ways to gather books for kids that sharpen their appeal...baskets of books on sea creatures, books about space, author baskets. #G2Great
A2 We know that summer access to books is key and that summer slide is a reality for kids who can least afford it. We can’t wait until summer is around the corner. It has to be a priority from the beginning of the school year! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A2: procuring a solid, well organized classroom library with picture books, series books, poetry, nonfiction titles, weekly visit to school library and sending read aloud home for families to enjoy together. #g2great
#G2Great A2 our district has a book bus that travels to every campus every couple of weeks for kids to climb aboard and get books for themselves and family member! I also know several who have held summer book clubs.
A2: When I was a Title I intervention teacher I made sure to send home books with every student every night. I only lost at most 4 books a year, which I happily replaced. IF a book didn't come back I knew it was well-loved and needed in that household. #G2Great
A2 It never ceases to amaze me how many Ts don’t have a classroom library. We must ensure that this is the norm so access isn’t the proverbial luck of the draw where books are abundant in some room but not others. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A2 Use those Scholastic flyers to send home and flood your room with books. Look for people who will be a benefactor for your scholars. #booksbooksbooks#g2great
A2: Increase visits in their school libraries. Then eventually take a nice field trip to a public library (if possible) so the students know that they can have access to a library that doesn't have to be inside their school. That can be a start :) #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A1: Students are more excited to read when they see that you value their needs and interests. Get to know your readers and give them choice and access to those books. #G2Great
Q2: Apply for book grants, collaborate with Ts in your building & create an organized book closet, invite parent volunteers to scour local libraries and bring those books to your classroom on loan, help families get library cards for their children...think outside the 📦#G2Great
A2: Advocate to get books into your classroom!!! Advocate for summer access! Breaks! Etc! @donalynbooks has the $ amount it costs to send kiddos home with summer books! I remember you mentioning it last year at the Reading Summit! Find the funds! We must ADVOCATE!
#G2Great
A2: As a new teacher, I want to start building a classroom library as soon as I can. Hopefully by stealing a few books from retired teachers too :) #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A2 Classroom libraries are KEY. A safe place where kids can explore genre, text length, and variety, within the class. It’s a primer and a great teacher for when they visit the library. PRINCIPAL SUPPORT IS A BONUS FOR THIS! #G2Great
In reply to
@hayhurst3, @donalynbooks, @colbysharp, @DrMaryHoward, @franmcveigh, @vrkimmel, @brennanamy
A2: By demystifying institutional spaces where books are often found. For a lot of people, libraries, book stores, schools etc. are exclusionary. We as educators can be that bridge for our students to crossover #g2great#LitBankStreet
I know we’re book hoarders, but caring more about getting books in kids’ hands than keeping them in my classroom has increased their access. I have used grants from prof orgs such as @NEA to send kids home with books to last all summer. Taken kids to get a library card. #G2Great
YES! The books are in schools for our students - they should bring them home to read and return them to share with others- never worry however if they don't come back - a book lost is a book read! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
Send parents and guardians emails with reading tips and book recommendations. Help them see the importance in reading. I just sent one over my February Break today, and I already had parents sharing they were headed to the library. :) #G2Great
think of this - Is your library in your classroom, or is your classroom inside your library? That visual of Ts classrooms with Ss so engaged is priceless. #G2great
A2: Work with community centers in apartments and neighborhoods -- purchase high interest books for them to have available for kids to read on weekends, over breaks, etc. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A2 I want one of these outside of our schools. If kids are involved in designing and making them, it makes the book sharing even more special. #g2great
A2: Creating a classroom library that has a diverse collection of books, borrowing and swapping from other colleagues and or friends, and taking out books weekly from your schools library so you have new books to read! #G2Great#Litbankstreet
A2: Start a book flood - thanks @KellyGToGo - by writing grants, going to library book sales, asking for books instead of Kleenex, make friends with librarians, etc. Then embrace your students with them by displaying them around the walls of your room. #G2Great
A2 stop worrying what will happen to the books that go home. Maybe they get lost. Maybe they get torn, ripped, destroyed. Maybe they get read. Loved. Shared. #G2great
A2: I’ve learned so much about this from the @ProjectLITComm! Write grant proposals, reach out to the community, hold book drives, attend library sales....#G2great#BookAccessForAll
A2 think of this - Is your library in your classroom, or is your classroom inside your library? That visual of Ts classrooms with Ss so engaged is priceless. #G2great

A2. Put your money where your mouth is. If you value literacy, provide money for books. Also consider summer lending programs, summer bags of books sent home at years end, etc... #G2Great
A2 Have books in EVERY classroom that Ss choose to read and want to read. Also in school & public library. Don't close library in May for inventory. Open up & empty shelves in summer - send books home.

#g2great#bookaccessforall
Yes! My students and I have this thing where if they want me to bring a book to add to our class library, they request it with a 'boot note'- (the only way I'll remember is if I find a note in my boot at the end of the day)- this is from today #G2Great
Yes- love the idea of helping local offices have baskets of books. In our town, the library is not close enough for all kids to get to. Putting books where they CAN get to is a great idea. #g2great
#G2great A2 Digital reading w/@Scholastic Literacy Pro & Epic has been a game changer in my CR this year. Our district has streamlined S access & Ss get plenty of practice in school. There's also talk abt having a Bookmobile in summer months at playgrounds. Need to be creative!
A2 Access/time needs to be a major conversation in schools. With so much professional “development,” why is a paltry percentage @ this topic? We can’t expect Ts to view it as high priority if schools don’t. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A2: our school teamed up with @BookTrustUSA. All K-3 Ss get $7 in books for free every month. Books they choose & books they take home to build their own libraries with. #g2great
A2: I’m applying for a grant from Book Love Foundation, I enter book giveaways on Twitter all of the time, I bring books in to my classroom from the local library, I purchase new and used books all of the time. #BookAccessForAll
In reply to
@hayhurst3, @donalynbooks, @colbysharp, @DrMaryHoward, @franmcveigh, @vrkimmel, @brennanamy
A1 - Open, flexible access AND student choice is key in my media center. I think of checkout as a retail experience; if I provide great “customer service” Ss will return. If I don’t, access will decrease and the Ss suffer long term. #G2Great
Give students books to keep! After reading Game Changer and hearing @donalynbooks , the school librarian and I are revamping summer reading. We are ditching reading logs and prizes and working to put books in the hands of Ss. #G2Great
A2 I want one of these outside of our schools. If kids are involved in designing and making them, it makes the book sharing even more special. #g2great
A2 In Santa Monica we have a terrific public library system, they work so well with the schools.
In June they come and entice Ss at our public schools with a wonderful summer reading program. #g2great
A 2 #G2great Our team is discussing a summer lending library in our school parking lot. We would fill it with our classroom library books. I’ve been pitching the idea to some Girl Scouts working on their gold award...if we build it they will come!
Check out yard and garage sales in the summer...or find out if libraries have collections they’re selling...many states host H U G E book sales once a year...we have one coming up in March in Princeton NJ #G2Great
A2: #G2Great#BookAccessForAll Having public library come to school during meet the teacher so parents can obtain a card and get access to all of the library's online books, audiobooks, and events. Cultivate a love of reading so that they will search for and crave books.
Can’t wait to look at this after #g2great chat. A2 Bookstores, libraries, scholastic book fair and book orders , exchanges with peers. Making book accessibility a priority
A1 #G2Great: #BookAccessForAll means that students are also having access to books that represent their identities. It is important that our students of color see themselves in the books they read and has been proven to increase their literacy and desire to read! #DiverseBooks
Some of our neqwe teachers have asked for funds from PTA. Others tell the public library who they are and bring books to the classroom, 99 at a time. #G2great
A2: As a new teacher, I want to start building a classroom library as soon as I can. Hopefully by stealing a few books from retired teachers too :) #LitBankStreet#G2Great
Use summer school funds to purchase summer reading books to send home with students - no return required! Ss can participate in book swaps to share books if they want. #G2Great
A2: So proud of my Hobbs, NM folks where the superintendent allowed kids to check five books for the summer. A local foundation dedicated over $60,000 to replace any lost books. If they didn’t lose any, they could buy more books! @titanchicklisa#G2Great
I was fortunate to serve on the library board for my city when we were working on policies. Together, the librarian and board worked together to allow ANYONE to have a library card. No barriers! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
I agree! Love them too. Although not as fancy, we used a rolling cart all summer long. Families were welcome to stop by and help themselves whenever it worked. #g2great
I fully embraced this philosophy last year for first time - we lost about half a dozen books - not a huge impact overall, esp if Ss kept books they loved. #G2great
Public libraries. Public libraries. Public libraries! I grew a love for reading because my mom took me there every summer. My goal before the end of the year is to take my students to our town library so they can see books there! #G2great
A2: Advocate for more books in the classroom. Whether by providing what you can or seeking grants, donations, or other support, it makes a difference. #G2Great

A2. Don’t assume that if your kids have database or ebook access through school that you’ve met their book access needs. Many families still don’t have consistent access to wifi. Ask your families what they need! #g2great

A 2 #G2great Our team is discussing a summer lending library in our school parking lot. We would fill it with our classroom library books. I’ve been pitching the idea to some Girl Scouts working on their gold award...if we build it they will come!
6. Stop limiting kids to certain books.
7. Stop making ares specific to certain groups. I don't need a diverse literature section I just need diverse books represented in the collection equally.
8. Increase library access through better funding
9. HIRE MORE Librarians #G2Great
Make school libraries available on the weekends and during the summer. Many schools in urban districts are within walking distance for families. We need to rethink the way we utilize our school buildings. It’s a shame to close off resources. #g2great#bookaccessforall

Great idea . @sheena1832, independent reading is crucial for practice. How can we support those who have a hard time with stamina? #G2Great#LitBankStreet
Q3 #LitBankStreet
After establishing this routine, I would discuss the importance of reading for an allotted time, “If you read more, you become better readers.” Students would also have allotted time for independent reading in class.
Beware of having only outdated and worn books. Your kids need newer, exciting titles too! Check out @BookOutletcom and @BWBooks for good prices. #g2great

A2: our school teamed up with @BookTrustUSA. All K-3 Ss get $7 in books for free every month. Books they choose & books they take home to build their own libraries with. #g2great
A2. Public libraries. Public libraries. Public libraries! I grew a love for reading because my mom took me there every summer. My goal before the end of the year is to take my students to our town library so they can see books there! #G2great
A3: Start small- try it yourself & share the results (or better yet- have students and families talk it up). "If you build it, they will come." Word always spreads in schools. #g2great
A3: Show them the data! Show them the research! If we’re on the same page of Vision and Mission of learning and getting all stakeholders on board is essential! #G2Great
A3: A school system must embrace the notion of making time & space for independent reading. At the very minimum, when your Ss go home on Friday, you know they have had ample time reading a good 📚 of CHOICE for that week! This helps to level the playing field for all Ss. #G2Great
Yes, sometimes hard but important to throw out books that are worn out. Reading should be a pleasure, including the senses. Tattered yellow pages that smell are rarely as much fun to read. #g2great

It starts at the top. Admin needs to see the value, and promote time and choice. Yes, a few teachers can do it on their own, but in order to create a reading community, the admin need to back it and share why it works (research!). #G2Great

Q3: We build consensus about choice when we learn to let go of judging what's 'worthy' of reading. Yes it's okay to read DOTWK for the 5th time! #G2great

A2 our district host an event first weekend of summer with partnerships all local libraries. Free books, family events advertised and sign up for public library cards. It’s been great! #g2great#BirdvilleReads Oh and FREE food and fire trucks and police cars for kids to sit in.
Q2 #G2Great: there are a few programs such as @Booktrust that increases #BookAccessForAll. I also clean out my own library to make room for new books and give the (still good) books to my students for breaks and summer!

A3: Is talking slower and louder acceptable as a response? No? Show people, keep records of kids and how they really feel about the respect we are giving them to read what they want. #G2Great
A3: Proof is in the pudding...invite others in to see how choice & self-selection function in your classroom...how conferring leads to knowing your readers on deeper levels, so that book matching becomes seamless and exciting...my classroom has an open door policy #G2Great
A2. This is a key part of our mission! We set up reading areas in places kids frequent (community centers, barbershops, doctor's offices, etc.) to increase access to books all year long. #G2Great#Booksaccessforall
A2 cont.: Encourage, support, and increase access for books at home with @dollyslibrary Free books mailed by name to the address of every child from birth to age 5. ❤️❤️❤️#G2great
A2: Summer bookclubs and opening the school library once a week are powerful ways to support readers. A few cookies and lemonade and a chance to talk about and checkout books! @richard#G2Great
A3: Start small- try it yourself & share the results (or better yet- have students and families talk it up). "If you build it, they will come." Word always spreads in schools. #g2great
A2 Books in my classroom library are for reading, not decor. If a kiddo wants to take it home to read & it gets lost- chances are it was read somewhere & laid down. Bottom line- they were reading! Lose a 📚, not a reader! #G2Great
A3: Leading by example! Do the talk by actually prioritizing some reading time and value to the chosen books, because that gives a sense of value especially when it is focused on someone's time and choice. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A3: My fifth graders spend more time reading than anything else during their school day. We never skip it. EVER. It doesn't take long for them to see what is valued in our classroom. #G2Great
A3 We relinquish a ball & chain to mandated programs. You can’t force FIDELITY to a box and ask Ts to find time for reading. With limited minutes in a day, we have to RE-PRIORITIZE how we spend those precious. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A3: My fifth graders spend more time reading than anything else during their school day. We never skip it. EVER. It doesn't take long for them to see what is valued in our classroom. #G2Great
A3 I am a firm believer that teachers who see themselves as readers make this easy. Design opportunities for all stakeholders to experience the gifts of time and choice. #G2great
A1: While I believe access to books is critical, developmentally appropriate books, relevant books and books with diverse stories and characters make the difference in situations where students can't read/don't want to read. Quality over Quantity #G2Great#LittleMix
I replaced my whole Roscoe Riley collection and put the old ones in the recycle bin. When the 3rd graders came to empty it, they were appalled! Came to me with the books so worried that anyone would toss them. They each got a few “new” books to take home! #g2great

A2 I wish I knew the answer to this question. A few years ago I partnered with the Public Library to drive their van to the locations where the Bus delivering summer lunches would be. We had donated books to give away and still, there was not much interest. #g2great
By showing tangible quantitative and qualitative differences in the readers the stakeholders you’re trying to persuade see every day. Peer-reviewed research matters, but is less convincing to naysayers than seeing the transformative power of time & choice in YOUR Ss! #G2Great
A3 Professional conversations and observations of what happens when Ss have choice versus no choice. A good conversation goes a long way towards making an impact and change. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A3: Let Ss have the opportunity to choose what THEY want to read and give them the time to just cozy up with that book. We must foster a love for reading in our Ss. By giving them that choice and time we are helping them discover that love. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A3: My fifth graders spend more time reading than anything else during their school day. We never skip it. EVER. It doesn't take long for them to see what is valued in our classroom. #G2Great
A3 Part of our conversation must be what we DO/DON’T mean by CHOICE. Tethering kids to leveled bins closes rather than opens choice doors. Donalyn & Colby brilliantly address this issue in chapter 5. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll

A2 - Promote the use of ebooks via app based sites, public digital library holdings. Partner w/ public library to provide info sessions on what is available outside of school library. Allow parent checkout in school library. Write grants for books that kids can keep. #G2Great
Yes! Yes! Yes! I think it is so important as educators to hold ourselves accountable for something that is so crucial for our students. It's a non-negotiable. We cannot opt-out. This is a must! #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A3 Let’s start by verbalizing what we value and put time/choice where our mouth is. Putting this in the calendar first and not allowing anything to get in the way models that we value it! We do… or we don’t. PERIOD! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A2. We also take a traveling bookshelf to family friendly events to expose the community to quality diverse and #ownvoices books, often partnering with local libraries to sign families up for library cards. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A3 Reading is the “big thing” with our students. For many it’s their go to when other work is done. They have “hangeroos” on their chairs with the many books they’ve chosen. #G2Great
A3: I keep track of what they read, how they read what they read, how they talk about what they read, and the growth they make during their time with me. #G2great#BookAccessForAll
A3 Time and choice are absolutely critical. We can change that for so many kids by being the example. Please continue your commitment of time and choice and before long you'll example will help to bring about change. #staystrong#g2great
Ask the staff about their beliefs about Ss reading- pushing them to think about what they personally value as a reader- then create a mission statement (and post it everywhere) #G2Great
A2. Surveying Ss at the beginning of the year, I find that for a few of them, the only internet access they have at home is a parent's cell phone; others none. #G2Great
A2. Don’t assume that if your kids have database or ebook access through school that you’ve met their book access needs. Many families still don’t have consistent access to wifi. Ask your families what they need! #g2great
A lot of kids would love to be in those spaces, but their parents just don’t include that in their daily routines or they don’t want to spend $$ on books. We have to get books in kids’ hands without forcing them to rely on adults who don’t see it as that important. #g2Great
Q3 We are currently doing student led book clubs in 3rd grade and it is amazing to hear their conversations when they choose the books and what to focus on as readers! #g2great
So true, Laura. When leadership models their own commitment to and belief in the power of choice-drive reading in the classroom everyday, skeptical Ts are more likely to shift perspective #g2great
A 3 It’s the principal who supports a culture of reading, always budgets $ for books, reads to Ss, creates schedules with time for Ss to read, has conversations with teachers about choice, and makes independent reading and access to books a top priority. #g2great
A3 #G2great I feel like it helps to do some marketing and promotion. I snap pics of the kids reading and include it in newsletters, on Twitter, and whenever else I can. This shows the community and stakeholders how much we value reading.
Guide teachers to reflect on their reading lives. At NCTE this year, @pernilleripp asked us to consider our rights as readers. We have the right to choose books, read how much we want, when we want. If we want to grow readers, shouldn't we offer them the rights we enjoy?#G2Great
A2: (sorry I’m behind) I’ve started buying my class the $1 books from scholastic clubs as random surprises. $25 to get a book into every student’s home is worth it (heck, it’s less than I spend on takeout pizza on Fridays) #G2Great
A4: Having to host talks with librarians and let them interact with students. For libraries, have students frequently visit their school libraries and eventually go see public libraries as well, then do projects about it for some creative output. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A3: Start with your kids in your class. They will begin carrying books outside of your classroom. Have book talks, increase book access/visibility, and encourage colleagues to join you. There is no argument against once a child’s love for reading is visible. #G2Great
#G2great We need to work on keeping the access/choice once they leave our doors, too. One of my Ss from l/y recently said he wants to love reading again. It's too bad that not all CRs make choice reading time non-negotiable.
When asked on back to school night, “What is a Just Right Book?” My response ~ “One that engages and interests your child...” Save the levels for GR, allow CHOICE in all other aspects of your day and you will see your readers bloom #G2great
A3: Their is nothing like seeing a reader realize that they have choice in what they read, when they have spent the last year or two with limited or no choice. You can see the weight lifted from their shoulders. #G2Great
A3. We need better professional development for teachers and ADMINISTRATORS so all can understand the role of choice, volume, and engagement on reading achievement. Otherwise we are pressured into less valuable use of class time #G2great
#g2great A3 have to shout out to a teacher who has just stepped out of her comfort zone of rotation back to reading and partnerships, the engagement and buzz over books was the sweetest sound today
When I taught 4th my kids begged to read more when we had to stop. Some days I had to convince them that we really did have other work to do! It’s all in the teacher attitude and approach. My kids always had a book near by for a reading emergency! #g2great#bookaccessforall
A3: My fifth graders spend more time reading than anything else during their school day. We never skip it. EVER. It doesn't take long for them to see what is valued in our classroom. #G2Great
I don't know how anyone could possibly teach kids without read aloud. I think that a good chunk of teachers are probably teaching today because of the books their teachers read aloud to them. #g2great
A4 This is a pervasive problem but we can’t find financial resources that would address this issue if we’re spending money frivolously on all the wrong things. We start by having money conversations to be clear on what we value. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A4. Classroom libraries need to have approx. 2000 books to meet S needs A robust school library with a librarian is a MUST!
Can't get the volume w/o the books, the library and librarian!

A3: When you walk in my room there is NO DOUBT what is important in our room. Books are EVERYWHERE! Talk of books is always happening! Challenging other Ss & Ts to read favorite books are happening! It’s exciting! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
This is so important! When you are increasing #BookAccessForAll, make sure you have #DiverseBooks that represent our students of color and also give all students access to other cultures! #G2Great

A4. If we don’t fight to keep our librarians, we are going to lose them in our schools. Too many kids have already lost these vital mentors and teachers. #g2great
A4: Reach out- ask questions, invite partnership. Every librarian & media specialist I know is looking & wanting to get more involved. I'm not a competition person, but once had a student who challenged town librarians to try to read as much as our class :-) #g2great
This is part of authentic relationship building. When Ss see you as an avid reader, and see you promoting reading, they will gravitate towards picking up a book and reading for enjoyment. Build contagious enthusiasm for literacy. #g2great
Your passion is contagious! Your results will speak for itself and build a small tribe. If that doesn’t do it - Booktalk the heck out of them - someone’s listening 😁#G2Great
A4:Share about the WONDERFUL things that they do for our students and us!Book recommendations! Getting us the books we need! Book talking! Promoters of a LOVE of literacy and advocates for our students!!! Be present when their existence is at risk! #G2Great#bookaccessforall
Independent reading is a non-negotiable! When embracing a Balanced Literacy approach, Ts must make decisions around best practices and learning experiences all day. This is one component that cannot be comprised!! #G2Great
In the school that I teach in, many of the athletes take a weight lifting class each semester for four years. That is 16% of their day. Imagine what would happen if all kids read 16% of their day. We might not win as many football games, but we'd be very Nerdy. #g2great
@MaryEhrenworth shared research at a recent conference:
To grow as readers,
1. Access to books they find fascinating
2. Expert instruction
Johnston and Allington: have done a study where if you don’t have expert instruction but have the other, kids will still grow.
#g2great
Our school libraries come first. Our librarians are the experts, and we need them more than ever in this "Fake News" era. Librarians see ALL of our kids, and can thus promote books to all. #G2Great
A4. Talk to them. Find out what their needs are and support them. Donate to the library, volunteer, and support their programs by sharing them with others and attending when possible. #G2Great#bookaccessforall
A4: I think one important way is by utilizing them. I bring my JH students down to the library for book exchange and sometimes a lesson by the librarian on new tech options available in the reading world. It gets kids into books. #G2Great
Q3 I have a couple of groups that do flipped guided/strategy groups. W/ these groups come book choice & it is all Stu led. They plan how much to read each day, question each other’s wondering, & hold each other accountable. They ❤️ it & have discussions that blow my 🧠 #G2Great

A4 I LOVE Colby’s description of Margie Culver’s twitter impact on him (p 130). Imagine if ALL Ts shared such stories to make the dramatic impact of librarians public & bring it to the forefront of our conversations! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
Our librarian is working tirelessly to plan, organize and put on a #scholastic book fair later this month. She needs teacher support and hands-on help in all this entails. I can also make the effort to get my Ss and families excited to support the event. #g2great
My only non-negotiable when I was in the classroom full time. We never missed read aloud- even on field trip days. Some days, it was more brief than others, but it always happened. #g2great
This is so important! When you are increasing #BookAccessForAll, make sure you have #DiverseBooks that represent our students of color and also give all students access to other cultures! #G2Great

A4: I have a nice classroom library. It doesn't matter how many books I have, it could never replace a school library run by a certified librarian. Kid need both. Kids deserve both. #g2great
I think we have a responsibility to call out schools & districts publicly when they don’t invest in school and classroom libraries. It’s often intentional and always unacceptable. #G2Great

Libraries, and certified librarians, are everything. They cannot be replaced. I wouldn't know half of what I do about great books and research without @amarshallch#G2Great
A4: I've seen homeroom teachers make the extra effort to introduce parents to the librarian following a parent-teacher conference. Get them connected to the experts! #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A3: I think PLC time when teams are discussing priorities is a good time to highlight the need and value of time and choice. Stay true and firm to the cause until things change for the better. Be tenacious because it matters. #G2Great
A4: Librarians are an English teacher’s best friend. Share ideas, take your classes there to browse the shelves, us the media center for more than the tech access. Suggest titles and displays. #G2great
A4: Get to know your librarian. Get them involved in your room WHENEVER possible. Use your school library yourself. Let your Ss see you using the library. Show appreciation for your school librarian. #G2great#BookAccessForAll
A4: Nothing builds a stronger reader that actual reading. Students who have the support of librarians and teachers will develop habits and passions that can’t be built in other ways. #G2Great
A4: As a librarian, I believe we must do our part and be visible. No matter how hard, we must push through and do what's best for our kids. We must support our teachers and be a go-to for literacy support. We must be well-read and share, share, share! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
I hope someone has a good answer. I have not worked at a school with full time certified librarian since 2005. 😭 I have, however, been able to advocate for book purchases by staying aware of what’s happening in the publishing world. #G2Great
A3. When you allow time and choice, you see students develop into readers. Students will let you know it too because they want to talk about their books. I love when a student comes to me and proudly announces they’ve finished a book! #G2great
A4 We can be advocates and speak up about value of librarians. The issue isn’t lack of money but lack of priorities. Imagine if we used the $500,000 we spend on basal for librarians (& books). We need to RE-PRORITIZE! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
Our school library and librarians (early childhood to 1st grade; 2nd to 6th) are our go to for students, teachers and parents. We recognize how valued they are to our school community #G2Great
A1: more books...yes. Some of my students have plenty of books, but not necessarily the “right” books because they haven’t found that spark. I feel like more books is great, but more books that are right for that reader is even better! #g2great
A4: Share your love of books and learning, know books and talk about them - create an energy around books - make sure all students can see themselves in the books in your classroom #equity#G2Great#BookAccessForAll
Amen! @donalynbooks taught me that you don’t need other options than reading for when kids finish work. After reading Book Whisperer I’ve had kids keep a “Best Friend Book” in theirseat pocket @ all times. Because like a best friend, it’s always there when you need it! #g2great
A3: My fifth graders spend more time reading than anything else during their school day. We never skip it. EVER. It doesn't take long for them to see what is valued in our classroom. #G2Great
A4 #G2great This is a thorn in my side. We have a media specialist in our small school. Library has potential for so much more impact. Word searches shouldn't be considered "library" time. Fingers crossed that incoming superintendent will address need for licensed librarians.

Share the dimension they bring to your school reading culture, the safe haven they provide for countless Ss, and the window into the world their library provides for all #G2great
A4 Tell my personal story: I didn't attend a school that had a library as a kid; therefore, I didn't read. I'm glad things have changed. #G2Great Librarians and the library make readers.
Q4. If you have one, use them! Ask for help with text sets. Invite them in for book talks. Let parents know how much they do to support literacy development. #g2Great
A4 I couldn’t make it w/out our librarian @MLTumulty! I get her as involved w/ my Ss as possible... not just in the library setting. Co-teach, guest reader, however I can get my Ss to access her! They ❤️ her book recs & I am loud & proud about her awesomeness! 🤗🥰 #G2Great
A3 Share the research! #GameChanger does a nice job of laying it out in an accessible way. I also love the vignettes and practical suggestions! #G2Great
A4: I think by making ourselves present as well as the librarians present in our own classroom. By having the librarians come one day a week and read can build relationships btw student and teacher as well as providing access to the expert source. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A4: Partner with your school librarians and showcase their power in building a culture of reading in your school! Tell your admin, your school board everyone how vital they are to your school #G2Great
And inviting parents in to volunteer in the library. This helps the librarian, gets the kids excited, and the parents can see what types of books their kids are reading. It's a win-win-win! #LitBankStreet#g2great

A5. Creating a diverse book collection is more than just making sure x,y,z's are represented. For Ts committed to exposure to build their Ss experience, building a diverse collection requires these resources: contemplation, research, and awareness.
#LitBankStreet#G2great
A5 Anything and everything but Twitter is my go-tos. We know the value of word of mouth books so paying attention to people we admire is an important way to narrow down a SEA of options coming out every single day. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
#G2great A5 One of the best ind. children’s book stores is near my home, Children’s Book World. I go there all the time to ask about the newest and best books representing kids from every background. They are wonderful.

A5: this is what I want to improve upon in my room! My work with @ReadtobeReadyTN has helped me with finding more diverse books for my room. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A5: I have started following things like #ProjectLITBookClub and #DisruptTexts and the conversations that spin out of those. Also just paying attention to the book twittersphere and the recommendations offered. #G2Great
A5 There are so many resources out there to help you find collections of diverse books to add dimension to your libraries. A few of my favorite go-tos are @TheBooksource (they will curate any list you request!) and @Scholastic#G2great
A5: I use the search online and reserve books thought my public library and am at the library every week. I create collections through this resource as well so I have lists to refer to fro year to year and I get idea from other people’s collections📚#G2Great
I’m going to take the leap of faith and do it this year! We did over winter break and it worked out great! I’d also love to see my new kids in the fall see the big kids bringing back well-loved books! #g2great
A5: Check with your librarian :-) Also, online lists, award winners, local free-standing bookstores supporting up & coming authors, recs from students & colleagues. Aim for a variety of characters in a variety of settings- from a variety of authors. #g2great
A4: School librarians work tirelessly to create rich literacy environments that reflect all interests, backgrounds, & help Ss gain access to the curriculum through 📚 that appeal to them. Ss should view all educators as people who can open the doors of reading to them! #G2Great
#G2great Make an intentional effort to include diverse books not only in the class library as well as the school library. Listen to your students as they discuss books. Find books that have different perspectives. Take time to know your students and build relationships
A5 My students. I look at them. I conference with them. I learn about them, and I supply a library FOR them, not for my district or myself. For them. The books are for them. #G2Great

A4. School libraries are so important! Our librarian talks a lot with students about books they want to read and makes them appear in the library! #G2great
A5 It’s so important to step back and take a long hard look in the book diversity mirror. Take a good look at our libraries AND our kids helps us know if there’s a blatant mismatch so that we can address it. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A5 #G2Great: I use twitter’s hashtag #DiverseBooks and find a lot of great websites and blogs that way. Our website, @ColorfulPages, is also a great resource- we have blog posts, author interviews, etc and will eventually be putting out lesson plans!
A5 #G2great Being part of a book reviewing club has afforded me the opp to read ARCs myself to determine viability for CR. I also pay attn to pub world, listen to podcasts like @Books_Between , follow @colbysharp & @MrSchuReads & talk to kids abt what they want to be reading.
A;5 Being the state's second largest diverse school in the state as well as a Title 1 school we have a very diverse resource for our Ss. They can find books on their home country and things they can relate to very easily. We are very fortunate. #G2Great
A5: Twitter is my # 1 source for keeping up on current books...book~talking with other Ts...visiting local libraries & book stores...I’m in the process of helping with a grant to bring more diverse books into classrooms at the elementary, middle & HS level #G2great
Q4: Make your collaborations visible to the students, admin, and community. Ask your librarian what they want to try/explore and help them do that. #g2great
A5. I recommend: @socialjusticebk@diversebooks and READ a lot of books from diverse perspectives and voices. Expand your social media circle to include more educators and creators of color. #g2great
A4 We can be advocates and speak up about value of librarians. The issue isn’t lack of money but lack of priorities. Imagine if we used the $500,000 we spend on basal for librarians (& books). We need to RE-PRORITIZE! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A 4 We are in dire times as there are schools in every state that have no school librarian or 2 schools have to share a librarian. Librarians keep collections current. They know every book in their library and can help Ss find books. They exude book love.#g2great
A4. As a librarian, I appreciate this question. Librarians need to be in all schools and be accessible to ALL students throughout the day. Stuck in rigid schedules does not allow for collaboration and lessons with T and classes. We are here to help #g2great#BookAccessforall
A4. Classroom libraries need to have approx. 2000 books to meet S needs A robust school library with a librarian is a MUST!
Can't get the volume w/o the books, the library and librarian!

As a student, I used to volunteer at my elementary school library. As a kid, I lived across from a library. As a college student, I worked at a library. As a teacher, I valued @chayes0114 and our school library. Libraries/ librarians changed my life. ❤️📖#d100inspires#G2great
A5: I have to be aware of what's happening out there in the world and I make sure that I have everything covered in my possible collection. I need to be mindful and relatable. What I have reflects my beliefs and what message I send across. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
I have a google form they fill out with requests that I constantly check. I try really hard to prioritize what they ask for over what *I* think they should want to read! #G2Great
A2. Give them a book of their choice. The last few years, we have begun our year by allowing students to have a book to keep--to begin their own library at home. This has encouraged reluctant adolescent readers. Everyone loves free books - ask @donalynbooks 😀 #bookaday#G2Great
A5: I'm going to make a motion that we call books inclusive as opposed diverse. We might have diverse classrooms, but our books should be inclusive. Otherwise, diverse to who? #offmysoapboxnow#anyseconders? #g2great
A6 give them solutions, help them get a library card, allow them to access at the school, send them home over the summer with extra books - or over breaks! #G2Great@colbysharp@donalynbooks
A6 School should be a stepping stone to book access. Pondering a design where students have book access between school to home is an crucial starting point. Yes, we may lose some, but I’d rather lose books than readers! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A6. A. Schools take Ss to public library for library cards & book access.
B. Invite families in to share importance
C. Have book check outs for families
D. Give Ss books to read
E. No fines for LATE books!

Hey, Twitter world. There is a great chat happening on Twitter right now where teachers are celebrating and advocating for collaboration between teachers and librarians to create a culture of literacy. LOVE the comments coming through! Check out #G2Great!
A5: Not a resource per se...more of a practice. In K-2 I like to have books that were created by the students themselves included on classroom shelves. What a way to make sure the diversity of our students is reflected in our libraries! #G2Great
A4 - I have to promote the services, resources I can provide to all stakeholders. If I don’t let Ss, Ts, parents, community members know ways I can help - well, they aren’t going to know what I can give. Newsletters, Twitter posts, family nights, makerspaces. #G2Great
A5: I am truly grateful for my PLN on Twitter and my PLC in the school district I work in. We all share ideas, support one another & share resources. We all need a village of people who are passionate about igniting their Ss interests! #G2Great
And absolutely ask your students for recommendations!
I keep a running list of titles for my TBR list, just like I ask them to do. We all add to it each week as we share what we’ve been reading. #G2Great
A6: Help to make local libraries more accessible and approachable with book recommendations for students, share location/contact info
#LitBankStreet#G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A6: One that I have seen and liked is "Have a Book? Leave a Book, Need a Book? Take a Book" book drives. Families can come that need books in their homes to check out the books others have already loved. #G2great
A6: Parent education is key. After that, books sent home from school, @pennykittle Book Love Foundation! (Write a grant people!!) , library cards. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A6: Send books home (to borrow & keep). Procure books. Gift books. Apply for grants. Take trips to local library. Support caregivers w/ strats for reading together-& ways to reread together- to get the most possible out of books available #G2Great
An inventory for every aspect of our literacy classrooms, including ourselves, is vital. It’s also important to ensure that every child find themselves — outside & inside — in our classroom libraries. We must know our kids well to serve them! #G2Greathttps://t.co/DwVA8TbZGy
So much wisdom and inspiration in our #G2great chat tonight. It’s so fast paced that I can’t wait to take a slow closer look after then chat when I create the @Wakelet

A5: There’s this other guy out there with an outstanding YouTube channel that never fails to deliver a plethora of current book recommendations. I think his name is @colbysharp ? Check it out and subscribe today! #g2great#bookaccessforall
A6: I let my Ss know that their “reading lives” happen everywhere...at home, in school, in the car, in the park on a playground...I invite Ss to borrow books from me and have one on one confers with parents about ways to increase book choice at home #G2great
A6: For starters: send all the books in the school home with kids (Not all at once.). Books were not born to sit on shelves. They need to be in homes. In cars. On Buses. At sporting events. The dentist's office. Grandma's house. You get the point. #g2great
A6: Love the idea mentioned earlier of taking students to local library as a field trip. And then send home newsletter updating parents #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A5: Raise awareness with teachers! Talk to them about how books serve as windows and mirrors! Encourage them to examine their libraries with their students! Invite them to seek out diverse books and empower them to request them for their libraries. #G2Great
A6 #G2great Letting Ss take books home during school yr alleviates any issues w/access. Ensuring that Ss know how to log on to digital reading resources while away from school will help during summer months. Our town library was just completely rehauled w/lots of internet access.
Follow the best like those on this chat. @MrSchuReads and authors that are active on social media. Also School Library Journal and other journal reviews. They are my best recommendations.

#G2great I love the no fines for late books! Perhaps because I accumulated many late fees growing up at the library. Good thing the librarians liked me.
A6: We can encourage students to consistently borrow books from their school libraries to bring home. Educate the student and their families about gaining access to public libraries and encourage them to having their own collections at home. :) #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A6 We can do book talks for parents (Ts & kids). Tech tools like flipgrid allow us to make short recording to make parents aware of books kids love with a simple check out system to build a home-school book bridge. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A:6 We have a book program at school that gives Ss two books on their birthday month to keep. It's a start but a long way from having books available at home. I wish our library would allow Ss to check books out like I used to as a kid, take it home, read it and return #G2Great
A6 I encourage s's to borrow books for siblings and parents as well. Makes me so happy when I hear, "This book is gonna be late b/c my mom is reading it," or "Do you have any books you think my big brother would like?"#G2Great
First field trip of the year: public library. Get library cards for families. When teachers and librarians weed out titles, give them to students. #G2great
You have me thinking. Diverse in that not in your class but want kids to know. Inclusive in that all kids in class know they’re represented. Thinking out loud #g2great
A5: I'm going to make a motion that we call books inclusive as opposed diverse. We might have diverse classrooms, but our books should be inclusive. Otherwise, diverse to who? #offmysoapboxnow#anyseconders? #g2great
A6: along with sending home Scholastic book orders, this year I started taking pictures of recommendations from the orders and sending them out to families via our classroom Bloomz App. That little bit of guidance really increased my parent orders this year! #g2great
Absolutely! You can have a box or tray that Ss write and put the authors, topics, series, etc they’d like in their class libraries. Great way to get relevance and cultural diversity. #g2great
A5: This video is so short and SO important. It really helps people think about why we need windows AND mirrors-- and even sliding doors! https://t.co/UVGUkIv8z8#g2great
A6 My EOY gift every year to my Ss is a 📚 & a personalized bookmark. I share read aloud w/parents & post on our class Seesaw throughout summer w/book recs. I encourage my kiddos to send me selfies w/their 📚 & I respond w/ my own. I pass on how to get a lib card. #G2Great
A6: At Back to School Night I introduced parents to my “textual lineage tour” @Stephharvey49@AnnieTWard From Striving to Thriving ~ I shared books & titles that have meant something to me over the years & challenged parents to do this too...for themselves & their kids #G2great
A6. If you’re punishing kids for not turning in/ completing home reading logs without determining their book access at home (and supporting it), you are focused on the wrong problem. #g2great
A6: Remind students to have a backup book in case they finish one. I eliminated time limits on my checkouts and students are great about returning book when done.
Also consider asking the school library to check out books for the summer. Ours allows 25 books per kid. #G2Great
A6: @DollyParton’s @dollyslibrary is amazing! You could host library card nights in conjunction with kindergarten roundup. Give books as gifts/prizes/surprises instead of pencil toppers. Reach out to booksellers and libraries for support. #G2Great
A6: Summer book programs where kids take home books. Allington’s research is powerful-summer reading beats summer school in increasing student achievement. And sending books home is way less expensive! #G2Great
A6: Making the library the center of the community. More family programs at the library, more workshops, events, classes, discussions. #g2great#litbankstreet
Need to go now because this guy wants to read "the new book I got from the library" Thanks @tharkey for being his librarian! Thanks for a great chat! #G2Great
A6: First assume that all families value reading and want their children to grow as readers. Then, ask families what they need and move mountains to get it for them. #G2Great
Our students are also seeing what’s happening out in the world and #DiverseBooks are a great way to open it up for discussion in your class and create a safe and brave space! #g2great#bookaccessforall
A6 Love the idea of a family book club that my friend Melissa had a few years ago with her students and their families. They read and discussed, reviewed, shared and traded books back and forth. It was so fun to watch the delight of kids and adults at reading books #g2great
A6 School should be a stepping stone to book access. Pondering a design where students have book access between school to home is an crucial starting point. Yes, we may lose some, but I’d rather lose books than readers! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
We also had "family book blogs" over the summer- people could see what other kids were reading (get recs) - but caregivers, siblings, etc- they could all read & share books too. Fun way to maintain community & connection after the school year ended. #g2great
A7. If our Ss are readers while they are in school, they may continue the habit of reading the rest of their lives. That's our goal. Not a prize for reading X number of books...but reading for the love of reading, reading to be informed, and reading because it changes you!
#g2great
Ohhhhh. I just had a thought. About our Little Free Library that hasn't been set up yet and the Friday food pantry that gets a great turnout. Thanks for the brainstorm! #G2Great
A6 Partner with your local library to get Ss talking about summer reading programs. Help them to get library cards. Host school events with book giveaways. Have little free libraries IN the school - I have one in my classroom! #G2Great
Q7: When we showcase student conversation (and authentic) writing about books and when we model how books have impacted our lives, we set our sights on readers #G2great
A7 We keep our sights on the outcome we want for ALL kids: to help them lead readerly lives in/beyond our four walls. We start by making it a priority IN school and then use this to create a path to home reading. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A7 shift our focus from having to teach a certain book because that’s what we’ve done for years to teaching all readers what they need when they need it. Our children should be at the forefront of everything we do everyday. #G2Great@colbysharp@donalynbooks
A6: In Seattle we were snowed in and missed 7 days of school. Then it’s a week off for mid-winter break, I sent read aloud home via Seesaw and once roads cleared I reserved a room st the library and K-2 and parents for story sharing time. It was GREAT! #G2Great
A5 Scholastic and Book Source. My biggest resource of learning about diverse books is talking with Ts about books and my school librarian. Resource 2 nerdy book club @nerdybookclub#G2great
100% agreed! You need to make sure you view everything with an equity lens to make sure you are removing barriers and closing the #RacialJusticeGap in literacy for students #g2great
A6. If you’re punishing kids for not turning in/ completing home reading logs without determining their book access at home (and supporting it), you are focused on the wrong problem. #g2great
A7: BY respecting them enough to provide quality literature and time to read it. Stop with the photocopied at home readers and put real books in hands. This financial issue should not fall on teachers. So much money is wasted on programs that could be invested in books #G2Great
A6: @EastChester17 allows kids to choose a book on their birthday. Kids love this! As a T, I am always looking for ways to get books into my kids’ hands to build their libraries at home. This chat has opened my eyes to look for ways to improve this. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A6 and could we maybe think about limiting the toys they can buy at the bookfair? 1 toy or poster for every __ books. #g2great. Hate to see families come out of the bookfair with giant erasers, blacklight pens and nothing to read.
A7: We utilize books to better are readers not only in skill, but in confidence and passion for reading. We must strive to find books that will encourage are readers and further them on their individual reading journey!
#G2Great#LitBankStreet
A7: Good old kid-watching and conferring are my go-to’s ~ getting to sit down, one on one with a reader is the best way to understand his/her interests, needs and wants #G2great
I don't do reading logs and don't officially require students to read outside of my class. I just try to trick them into wanting to read by getting the sucked into really great books during our daily reading time. Mwa-ha-ha! #G2Great
A7: Know your students! Know their passions, worries, what they care about and tell them: "I have just the book for you!" Let them know you care so much about them that you are always searching for books they will love. #G2Great
A6 I led a summer program for several years focused on growing readers, and I did VIP (Very Important Parent) sessions for parents. Here’s the presentation I used, if you want to use/adapt it. (Transitions don’t work in SlideShare!) #G2Greathttps://t.co/ixT0CWzklN
And then you met this crazy teacher from MT who totally capitalized on your isolation and has gleaned immeasurably from your technology wisdom! #g2great
A7 Books are the vehicle to ensure access but that’s just a starting point. We also want to give time to read a place of honor in each day and make choice a central feature.. We get what we give - so we give our all! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A7: We MUST start w/ readers, know their interests, passions, struggles, and then find books that match them. We must also teach them HOW to find books for themselves, know themselves as readers, advocate for themselves and their readerly lives. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A7:Getting to know our readers are through trial&error in their book choices. They'll learn about themselves as readers & what books they like. Knowing our readers build a strong foundation & connection that will help us bridge our readers to the books. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A 6 Develop a school fund for books for families that can’t purchase them. Have family reading nights and send families home with books. Let Ss choose books from class library to take home on weekend, holidays, summer. Keep school libraries open in summer. #g2great
A7. Spend time getting to know the readers. What are their interests, what are their lives like? Then provide a variety of books they might enjoy. The right book can make a reader out of anyone! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A7 2nd grade has been working on letter writing sharing why they think “you” would like and should read the book they recommend. I loved how they read to the class about their choices. Reading and writing like bread and better #g2great
A7: We must get to know our readers and engage them with their interests!!! Connect them with high interest libros 📚! Their interests NOT ours or OLD curriculum texts!!! Lettttttt thooossseee gooo! #G2Great#bookaccessforall
A7: Teachers have to be readers so we know what books are out there. We also have to know our kids. We need to be able to look at a student and say, “I just finished this book and I think you will LOVE it!” #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A7 #G2great Books are the medium (equipment) through which Ss can practice skills and strategies. Providing choice and building stamina help make readers comfortable to do this work.
I never charge late fees. And when kids have a “lost” book they can still check out. That obstacle should not stop book access. Usually the book will show Up. #g2great#BookAccessforall
A7 know Ss beyond academics and behaviors. Know them personally and offer them books that match their interests and personalities. knowing your Ss- and using that knowledge to connect texts to readers- builds strong bonds and classroom communities #G2great
We have to get libraries to be more lenient with late fees! I’ve had so many kids who would love to use the public library, but they’ve lost their access. #g2great
A7 We have to realize that teaching literacy isn’t about a Lexile number, a test score, or a piece of data to put on a wall. It’s about the kids in our classrooms. It’s about the people they are, and will become. Our practices must reflect this. #G2Great

A:7 I don't think we give Ss enough time in class to read what they want to read. again, the choice of what they want. We need to let them have time in class to read every day. We can't rely on them reading at home if the don't have access that's the bottom line #G2Great
A7: Listening deeply to the discussion following read alouds. Powerful characters should serve as not only a window/mirror for your students, but also as a way for you to better understand your students #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A7. Spend time getting to know the readers. What are their interests, what are their lives like? Then provide a variety of books they might enjoy. The right book can make a reader out of anyone! #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A7 Instead of focusing on accountability - “prove you read it” we should be having conversations with Ss about what the book meant to them. Reading is not about the book but about the personal connections made by readers. #G2Great
A7: One-on-one conferences are great for this! When you confer, ask your students what they like to read and if they think the book they’re reading is a “just right” book for them #g2great#BookAccessForAll
Q7: When I was a new English teacher I thought my job was about the books. It took me less than a semester to realize it is about the kids. It is about knowing your Ss well enough to know what book they need not about a whole class required novel I want to teach #G2Great

I'm only three weeks in to a new semester with new kids and already have a few "book haters" obsessively plowing through all the Dragon Ball Z and Naruto books I can get for them. Would have never known this if I hadn't watched and talked to kids. #G2Great

“This is how I show my students that I love them — by putting books in their hands, by noticing what they are about, and finding books that tell them...

A7 Conversations are critical to this process. We don’t just read and put books away but build in the time to promote conversations around books, formally in book clubs as well as informally with daily sharing/ book talks. #G2Great#BookAccessForAll
A7: Listen to them when they are telling you abt the books they are reading even when (or especially when) the books wouldn't be on your list of must reads #G2Great
A6 Start will sending home library card forms at the beginning of the year. Send home books to kids. If they don’t come back to school at least they are being read and in a Ss or parents hands. #G2great

...I know. I know. I know how it is. I know who you are, and even though we may never speak of it, read this book, and know that I understand you." #G2Great
A7: Develop a reading relationship with our kids. Talk to them, let them have a voice in their reading and the books that they want to read. #G2Great#bookaccessforall
A7: Sit down with my Ss, listen to them talk about their interests and fill the shelves with books where they can see themselves in the books. Be willing to always add to your library as their interests change. Constant conversations with Ss about their lives. #G2Great
A7: As educators, we are capable of coming up w/ ideas for the books to reach our readers. We are the bridge that connects the readers & books. Provide w/ top quality materials & best/accessible locations to show that we value both readers & books. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A7 - Give students choice AND time. It is heartbreaking when a child brings a book back to me because it’s not on their level. Give Ss choice! Try this: Choose 1 on level and 1 free choice. No choice turns Ss away from reading! #G2Great
Q3: Is it necessary to build consensus about time reading and choice of books? If time and choice are important to you, build the time into your classroom, and there a many ways to build libraries. My favorite is inheriting/hand-me-downs! #G2Great#LitBankStreet
#g2great A7 we must be readers ourselves-share & model our own reading lives, invest in readers identities, Nurture community built by readers, be the Cupid of book-matching, provide mirrors, windows, & doors
A7. No teacher lies on their deathbed and says, “I wish I’d given them more test prep.” Sending engaged readers into the world is a legacy that matters and last long after we are gone. #g2great
A7: Be intentional and dedicated (defend) what truly matters. Resist complicated methods keep instruction simple, powerful and give readers time to read and develop love of reading. Practice what we preach.#G2Great
A7: Get curious about & respond to what you see, here, and wonder as students read. Listen to student's reactions, questions, takeaways... Ask questions to help them think, say, share more. All instruction is derived from students. #G2Great
My personal kid is obsessed with Natasha Preston books. I think they are trash. I have never mentioned this to her. I even listened to an audiobook of one with her. It's worth it. #G2Great
