Welcome tonight to #MEMSPAchat. Thanks for joining. Please start with introductions.
Shanna Spickard, guest moderator, Milan MS principal, and NAESP state rep. Thanks @MrDomagalski for the opportunity!
Hi friends, Jon here from Livonia. In & out tonight as I’m picking up my daughters from play practice & work. Here to support @SSpickard & the #MEMSPAchat crew!
A1: It is easy to complain about what is NOT working, it is much more difficult to derive SOLUTIONS and push that conversation into public discourse #MEMSPAchat
A1: Would we EVER speak negatively of our family? our kids? Absolutely not. Why would ever speak negagitvely of the BEST profession in the world, that does some of the BEST work ever?
#MEMSPAchat
A1: Having Positivity is a must! We have to be leaders with #PositivityUnknown2Mankind - If not, what else is there? Why are we really here? #MEMSPAchat
Part of being a positive ambassador is sharing all of the good, another part is sharing the REALITY with lawmakers of what we are seeing. It is not complaining, but INFORMING #MEMSPAchat
Education itself a moral enterprise. School teach morality implicitly and explicitly. By talking poorly about ed/people, we implicitly say that morality is not part of education; thus, we open it to criticism. Just one way to look at it. A 1 #memspachat
A1: Negative vibes never solve problems or generate a positive image in the public eye. Let’s look at shortcomings as opportunities to think outside the box, rather than something to complain about. #MEMSPAchat
A1: We lead by example every day in the education world. People watch and listen. They pick up on the negative so easily. If we are negative, they will think we are allowing negative talk #MEMSPAchat
There is a difference between talking poorly about our own schools, districts, or educators and addressing issues that exist in education. I think we need to understand this difference. A1 #memspachat
A2: Keep the good work front of our families and communities. Giving back to the community. Harvest Helping Hands is one example of the branding we are doing. #MEMSPAchat
A2: By my staff and I sending out tweets of what's happening throughout our building daily. I mention them in my morning announcements that go out to everyone. I do a storify of all of our tweets for the week and post it on our bulletin and our monitor. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Web page, YouTube, social media are great tools for showcasing the great things taking place in my building. Communication is key. Make open house happen every day!! #memspachat
A1: Every conversation. Every communication. Every interaction. Every email. Every phone call. Every community interaction. Twitter, FB, weekly communication, Newsletter, Website, paperwork, YouTube, #msmspride , etc.
#MEMSPAchat
Utilizing social media, newsletters, and other media to communicate the incredible things we do on a daily basis. Stakeholders want to see the good stuff! #memspachat
This has been my primary goal this year...bridging the home/school gap and opening the door to all the great things that happen everyday in the building #MEMSPAchat
Yes, share the #MEMSPAchat Storify with your staff!
We link these to #MEMSPAchat feed every week after the chat - Check it out around 9:15pm tonight... ---- Thanks @PrincipalStager
Branding starts with a mission that clearly states what we believe abd strive to accoplish; we should support it with a consistent flow of supporting information of how we achieve this on social media, blasts, press releases etc. A2 #memspachat
Q3: Get in there with my Ss! They bring me joy. I'm having lunch with every class 1 by 1 and listening to them. They are why we do this work! #MEMSPAchat
A2: Our ss have a story to tell. I started a random student of the week. I interview them and post it to YouTube (w/ permission for the school and community to see #MEMSPAchat
A3: I get into the classrooms and spend time with the Ss. Whenever I can go read, learn, and LISTEN to the students, it reminds me of my purpose. #kidsdeserveit I also love playing D.J. during lunches and watching/listening to the Ss singing along. #MEMSPAchat
A3: my chief inspiration officer.. the Mrs! She always asks me when someone's upset.. "aren't there 499 other people having a great IH experience... and also the @ErwinRWB pumps me up! @PosProject#memspachat
A3: Exercise. Focus. Intentionality! See and share the great things from Ss and Ts...find the LITTLE things. These make a greater impact! These will pick you up and inspire you! #visitchoir#visitorchestra#MEMSPAchat
A3: The building principal makes the weather. I am fortunate to have key people to reach out to if I need to be grounded or that much needed reality check. Always lead with a smile! #memspachat
A3: It helps that positivity is my #1 strength. Roland Barth always reminded us when we got too busy in our office or stressed to reflect and say; "With what I am doing right now. How is it helping the learning of a child?"#memspachat
I think we always need to remember the WHY. This alone brings a lot of positivity. If we are passionate about what we do and believe in it, we see the forest behind the trees. A3 #memspachat
A3: Two things, 1st and foremost get out of my office and talk to kids, they are AWESOME and have so much positivity to spread, 2nd find time to think each day, to find solutions and spin the story #MEMSPAchat
A3: I get into the classrooms and spend time with the Ss. Whenever I can go read, learn, and LISTEN to the students, it reminds me of my purpose. #kidsdeserveit I also love playing D.J. during lunches and watching/listening to the Ss singing along. #MEMSPAchat
A3: My fav thing to do is have lunch with small groups of students in my office nearly every day. Even with all the job stress, it always brings out my gratitude and my “why” #MEMSPAchat
A3: It helps that positivity is my #1 strength. Roland Barth always reminded us when we got too busy in our office or stressed to reflect and say; "With what I am doing right now. How is it helping the learning of a child?"#memspachat
A4: I am always wearing RCSD gear to out of district functions. While I am in public, I make myself readily available to answer any questions and resolve conflicts or misconceptions. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Stay true to the mission, and communicate the journey. Work in partnership with parents and the community to help students reach their full potential. #memspachat
A4: Keeping it positive with the teachers and students goes a long way. When they feel valued they are the best spokespeople for the district #MEMSPAchat
A4: Facebook is big for us to reach parents. Plus we have done to huge community scavenger hunts to roll out @PosProject. We want to prove worth so when it's time for bonds, the community won't think "Where have you been?" #memspachat
A4: Model the behavior you want associated with your district. Professionalism, understanding, driven, work ethic, high expectations and positivity. #MEMSPAchat#sisdchat
I still run the district's PTA Council FB page to share good things; I used to write for the local newspaper for the same purpose; I hosted The Future of Learning TV series and had many great educators on it. A4 #memspachat
Attacking the misconceptions head on is so important. Social media rants can get out of hand quickly and correcting misconceptions face to face with the opportunity for follow up questions is powerful #MEMSPAchat
A4: We MUST remember why we are here...we MUST focus and look for the positives...we MUST praise and appreciate our staff...we MUST recognize our leadership team. Tell the story of our Ts and Ss...it will tell the story of our district. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Stay true to the mission, and communicate the journey. Work in partnership with parents and the community to help students reach their full potential. #memspachat
A4: Living in district, sending my kids to my school, supporting athletics, music theater, wearing our gear. Being knowledgeable about programs in all buildings. Being positive... #memspachat
A5: As a district, we send out a FREE monthly newsletter to all of our residents. Each school submits articles. We also post it on our district's webpage. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Any way possible. Newsletter, social media, tv, radio, family nights, website, email, newspaper, etc. We need to utilize a huge variety of media in order to reach all demographics #memspachat
A5: Kim Cameron, U of M Prof wrote Positive Leadership. He reminds us to take daily gratitude walks. Here is a link to his Positive Leadership Assessment https://t.co/d7uupbplAN#memspachat
A5: Crestwood uses Board Brighteners highlighting positive student accomplishments, which are televised on local access & so can be recorded for posterity. #MEMSPAchat
It is good to partner with local news abd TV channels to drive positive image from many angles. When info comes not only from schools but parental organizations and community, it spreads much faster. A5 #memspachat
A6: My 4th graders finished up their first Project Lead The Way unit! So proud of their creativity and perseverance in the face of a challenge! #memspachat
A6: Proudest moment (of many great ones) this week was signing the honor roll certificates. Over 50% of the school qualified for Q1 #laboroflove#mcmsmoments#MEMSPAchat
A6: Our Suoerintendent, @WWCS_DrHolt, just asked us this today! I am so proud that my staff always puts building student relationships first. It has had a powerful impact on our students! #MEMSPAChat#w_wdolphins
A6: So proud to see our teachers using Talk Moves PD w/ @minnaturrell in a positive manner! Confident this will be used in classrooms! Love out #scmsrocks staff! So blessed to be working with them! #MEMSPAchat
My 8th grader got very upset when school was unexpectedly cancelled yesterday. She wanted to be at school. It's a great compliment to the work of her teachers at Clarkston Community Schools. A6 #memspachat
We also had a building-wide assembly and our students were such great citizens. I am so proud of them. The speaker even comments on us being on the best schools. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Continue offering great leadership workshop sessions and providing an AWESOME conference. Providing support for Ss lead initiatives at the State level. Clone @PaulLiabenow#MEMSPAchat
A6:#MEMSPAchat I was reminded that when we break thru the tough exterior on some of our most troubled teens, we find some genuine, caring kids, just looking for someone to uncover that good in them
This chat alone has a huge positive effect. I wonder is there is a way to reach out personally to as many members as possible and congratulate them on something they did well. A personal touch boosts confidence and positivity. A7 #memspachat
A8: I haven't written a blog to my Ps in a long time. I commitment to writing a new blog post tomorrow and more regularly about the good work we do! #MEMSPAchat
A8: I will take the time tomorrow to spend time and learn about a student in my building. I will show him/her I care and let them spread the positive vibes #MEMSPAchat
A8; After spending the evening at Wayne RESA for the Literacy Leaders Network #Wayne LLN, I am going to put something in my announcements tomorrow about the book I am reading (Model) an encourage our SS to read over the weekend to promote literacy. #MEMSPAchat
A7 We need more pd, more resources, more conversations around how to support trauma. Not what it is, not how to be empathetic, but how to support S. It's the biggest educational obstacle that we need to learn more about to be successful. Success helps the brand. #memspachat
A8: Make a dedicated effort to share a story everyday about one of my districts. Chesaning has designed a book bus that will deliver books and free lunch thought their rural district all summer! #MEMSPAchat#sisdchat
A8: I'm at several countywide meetings tomorrow and I will try to remind everyone that school districts should focus on collaboration, not competition.#MEMSPAchat
It’s Lunch with the Principal day for our students of the month. I️ will commit to sharing out on our new website and school Twitter! #MEMSPAchat#LeadPositive
