Hi everyone! First time here! Any advice for an education student and future teacher who will graduating in May? Maybe specifically about how I can brig growth mindset into my class a new a teacher as that seems to be the topic! #1stchat
A1: Growth Mindset:
Assumes that intelligence and other qualities, abilities, and talents can be developed with effort, learning, and dedication. Fixed Mindset: you aren't able to change/limited in what you can do in your life.

A1: A fixed mindset uses the words I can't, I never will, I am not smart enough, and will not learn from mistakes. A growth mindset uses words like I will, I can't YET, but , I am going to try again, and uses mistakes as a starting line, not a finish line. #1stchat
A1: A fixed mindset believes we can stop growing learning, and we each have limited intelligence. Growth mindset believes we can break down barriers with perseverance and reflection. #1stchat
Hi, Garrett. Glad you are joining us! Growth Mindset is something we definitely have to teach explicitly. It doesn't come naturally to many young students. I suggest this book. https://t.co/YNTfzbgboR#1stchat
Welcome Garrett! Congrats on your future graduation. I would say stay tuned as we will be talking all hour about Growth Mindset and you will hear from lots of great Ts. I like to introduce different mantras/sayings to my students and incorporate lessons of of those. #1stchat
@Garrett_EDUC451 - If you have heard of or used @ClassDojo, they have a great video series on growth mindset. That is how I intro it to my first graders. #1stchat
A1 A fixed mindset lacks to foresee where we could be in the future. Frustration at the moment prevents us from thinking what could be possible. #1stchat
A2: Share lessons on how the brain works like a muscle. Build the vocabulary of yet, perseverance, and help students to trash some old thinking. Many resources out there to use. #1stchat
A2: This is a great place to promote #MindsetMondayLRSD. My first graders are the hosts on the final week of January with the book, The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes. We are working on learning to read the story and ask questions about growth mindset. #1stchat
this is what I do. My kiddos love the power of yet and the songs on youtube. Anytime someone starts to say they can't, the rest of the class say yet!! #1stchat

A1: A growth mindset requires flexibility & the ability to value the learning process. A person with a fixed mindset is solely focused on the destination & overlooks the value of the journey. #1stchat
A2: There is a book called Bubble Gum Brain that shows the Growth Mindset idea vs Fixed Mindset. I also talk about how you can make new pathways in your brain as you practice new things or continue to try. #1stchat
A1: A growth mindset allows students to progress and grow throughout their education and life because this mindset says that learning is a process. A fixed mindset stunts learning and tells students they can not progress past a certain point. #1stchat
A2: Model, model, model. Ensure the structures in place support & reinforce having a growth mindset. Ss will not buy into growth mindset if it is clear it is not what is valued. #1stchat
A3: We talk in our class mtgs all the time about we learn from mistakes, that mistakes help us grow. I always point out my mistakes and that it's ok that I messed up. There's books to. #1stchat
A3: We use this all the time as WE make mistakes. There are some great books as well to use in class. STEM activities lend themselves to these discussions. #1stchat
A3: I definitely use my mistakes to let them know that mistakes are ok. While working on our hosting questions and such with Mindset Mondays, we did an internet search of inventions that were actually mistakes. It was so much fun. #1stchat
A4: I love the saying that we do "We love challenges." Just simple sayings that you do as a class/talk about during morning meeting can make these positive things instead of negative #1stchat
A4: Set up situations where there is productive struggle (engineering challenges, math tasks that are a stretch, etc.) Be ready to nudge, coach/ provided some support if the struggle goes from productive to unproductive. #1stchat
A4: We can't be afraid to give them things that are hard, above level or confusing. Give them time to grapple with it, work together. Getting through to success is so rewarding. Let them see/feel the process. #1stchat
A4: STEM projects always seem to bring out the best in growth mindset. Coding is another area where first graders may struggle and need to work through things. I don't help a lot in creative writing either, as I want my kids to work through their fears of the pencil. #1stchat
A4 I am upfront about some tasks being challenging so that students don't feel overwhelmed. They feel so accomplished when they overcome the challenge. #1stchat
A4: How do you deal with a Ss that gets too overcome with something they can't get right away? Dealing with that perfectionism with my youngest this weekend as he is worrying about something in math being too hard. #1stchat
my youngest is the same way... it's harder to deal with when it is your own child. In the classroom I involve other students giving them compliments to help them see what they have is very good. #1stchat
A5: I love posting things that they can't do YET and then celebrating these things when they can, its a lot about the way things are said and just tweaking the language. #1stchat
Q6: New Year’s brings resolutions/goals for the New Year. What do you do to promote goals with your students and yourself? Bonus points to share some of your goals!
#1stchat
A6: We talk about our goals and what we hope to accomplish this last half of the year. We hold each other accountable for those goals-same thing with myself. I lean on my friends to encourage and support me in my personal goals. #1stchat
A6: each of my Ss have a goal binder where they have their goal written, old & new work, data growth, center choices. We meet at least once a week to talk about it #1stchat My goal is to celebrate all the small moments at school and home each day
My kiddos are so proud when they reach a goal and are working hard to get there. Many had to tie their shoes and they have really been practicing #1stchat
I've got 2 more items that I'm going to get to tonight.
Q7: What other mantras or lessons relating to Growth Mindset do you teach your students?

A7: I have a new saying for the class every week related to Growth Mindset, last week it was "Is this really my best work?" We have been talking a lot about reflecting and putting in our best effort all the time. Another is using a creative solution to solve #1stchat
A7: Tomorrow my kids are decorating inspiration posters to put into their lockers. Some chose "Everybody makes mistakes, and it's okay." Others chose "Mistakes are just proof that you are trying." We are tying these in when we host #MindsetMondayLRSD . #1stchat
