Thank you for joining #BookCampPD this morning! Please welcome our guest moderator, @Isham_Literacy - we are looking forward to the amazing four questions she has prepared for you!!
Welcome to #BookcampPD! We are talking coding as well as shining a spotlight on your school. I am Kimberly @Isham_Literacy, K-5 Reading Specialist from Greenville, TX.
I have limited experience w/coding, but I always have my kids work on Kodable every year. It's a center in our math centers. My Ss have a lot of experience with it, though! #bookcampPD
A1. I think about all of the people I have connected with through Twitter. An amazing group of educators who have changed my life in ways they can't even imagine. I am SO thankful! #BookCampPD
A1 I used to think that I had to really know an app or a concept like coding before I tried it with my Ss. Now I am willing to try it alongside my Ss and learn it with them, allowing them to see me as a learner! #BookCampPD
A1. Reflection
Next year, instead of reflection being a one-size-fits-all— I want to give my students options on how they reflect.
Some students like to write (blog or journal).
Some students like to vlog (video blogging #Flipgrid and #Screencastify)
Drawing etc. #bookcamppd
A1: I relaxed and decided that it was okay to learn WITH my kids. I didn’t need to “read ahead” or practice. I could model the learning process with them. #ProcessNotProject#bookcampPD
A1. I was thrown to fire and flew by the seating my pants this semester. I tried ideas and failed at ideas. I learned nothing happens overnight #BookCampPD
A1 I am changing my thinking about the role of an educator in the classroom, beliefs about homework, and how Ss should be in the lead more and that it is ok if I dont know everything, learn with them! #bookcamppd
A1: That everything has to be new and fresh. Teaching strategies that worked for me as a kid are still very likely going to work now. I need to look at the why rather than just what year the teaching practice was introduced. #BookCampPD
A1: It’s all about choices! My lessons used to be: that’s what I’ve planned so that’s what we’ll do!!!
Today, I know to be flexible and in order to amplify student voice, Ss must have tech choices!
#bookcamppd
A1: This year, I focused a lot more on mindfulness. Each day, we have a theme (mindset, test prep, spatial awareness, review, and Makerspace). The Ss love the structure of spending the first few minutes of class focusing on different skill and taking time settle. #BookCampPD
A1) I used to think I can't start something half way through the school year or even at the end. A colleague helped me to realize that anytime is a good time to try something new! #bookcampPD
Q2 Share a time when you, your students, or teachers demonstrated growth mindset. What can we do to orchestrate that experience for others? #BookcampPD
A1: I've learned that sometimes when a student is signaling to me to back off that they need me to keep trying and never give up. I just need to find a different approach. #bookcamppd
I think the end of the year is a great time to try new ideas, mix things up, I have found it is great for boosting student engagement and ending the year strong #bookcamppd
A2. My growth mindset has been soaring through the roof lately as I tackle learning how to develop a website that could house resources and reinforce/extend the experiences taking place during #BookCampPD chats. https://t.co/Iivw4bzNAI
A2: through this yr a 2nd grader has shown growth mindset from breaking down right away when she didn't understand to now taking deep breaths, stopping, thinking, and working through. No tears, no break down - so beautiful! #bookcampPD
Q2 Share a time when you, your students, or teachers demonstrated growth mindset. What can we do to orchestrate that experience for others? #BookcampPD
A2: I love smart goals and reflection for Ss. The 1st step is knowing what you know. We use proficiency scales (1-4). Self assess, set a goal, make a plan, work hard, reasses. Empower Ss to OWN their learning. #bookcampPD
A2) When I endeavored on starting my own podcast. It seemed complicated and almost impossible. However, it's been almost a year and I am going strong on producing & hosting my 1st podcast! #bookcamppd
Q2 Share a time when you, your students, or teachers demonstrated growth mindset. What can we do to orchestrate that experience for others? #BookcampPD
Q3 Please share a time when you learned something from your students, or a time when they helped you to think outside the box. Celebrate their impact! #BookcampPD
A2: My Ss have shown a lot of growth in their GM this year. My class is set up so Ss can work at their own pace/reflect on their progress. We discuss when Ss can move on to a new skill. Many abopted a GM in math. Love when they use my words with each other. #BookCampPD
A3 I have my Literacy Ss use voice and choice in demonstrating their learning on #Seesaw. One of my 5th graders was typing a response and he was using emojis. Not randomly, but with purpose. He used them in place of some words and it made perfect sense! #BookCampPD
A3. I learn the most now from adults in our #BookCampPD#PLN So many ideas and resources are shared that I often lean back in awe at what is posted. New ideas from all of YOU enable my creativity to climb higher.
A2: I have a student with dysgraphia and last week he told me that he used to think he couldn't write, but now he realized that he was a writer he just needed help with his polishing his conventions. #bookcamppd
A2: I LOVE how @steffedd4th and Mrs. Kean have embraced native language use for two of our newcomers! They understand how important it is for our new students to engage in content EVEN if it’s not in English!!!
#bookcamppd
A2: Noticed some teachers are more willing to get connected or at least try to be connected! I took hold of the school Twitter! It is a great starting step that teachers, parents and students are noticing! #bookcamppd
A3: I love using @robertkaplinsky resources to build open ended scenarios. I am always surprised by the methods the Ss choose to solve them and share with the class. #bookcampPD
A3 every day! I remember earlier in the year learning to mass delete photos on the iPads with a swipe, and also how to code something differently, love these opportunities #bookcamppd
A3) My Ss have really shown me that they r great teachers to their peers. We do a lot of self-reflection work, and partnerships in my class. They really have taken the reigns and stepped up to the challenge. I will never go back! I am NOT th e only T in our classroom. #bookcamppd
I was the same way, thought Twitter was just another gossip place. After EDTech weekend I got on and haven't looked back. I have learned so much in the last 6 months. It can be life changing in a positive way. #bookcampPD
#bookcamppd You all r so sweet 2 ask. I wasn't going to self promote. Here is the link, but you can also subscribe on itunes, Stitcher, heart radio, etc. https://t.co/ByiL0fIsrg
A3: I have been reflecting on this a lot. There are 2 Ss I've had in the past few years that have really pushed me to change my teaching. Both needed more opportunities for challenge and as a result, I have completely changed my teaching. All for the better. #BookCampPD
Q4 Brian Aspinall gives many examples of coding in the classroom. Spotlight the awesome things your school is doing (or will be doing) with coding! #BookcampPD
#bookcamppd That's very sweet to ask. It's on itunes, Stitcher, Heart radio, etc. and also online: https://t.co/ByiL0fIsrg It's called "Time to Teach".
A3: I always tell my students to use their resources to problem solve. Lately, they've been coming up with so many resources that I didn't even think about. I love that!#bookcamppd
A4. Perhaps checking out our fantastic website that is overflowing w/ resources, could help you explore implementing coding in your classroom? Website has links to all of the resources from the amazing books we discuss. Here is @mraspinall --> https://t.co/npUUmldt8c#BookCampPD
A4 Our Technology teacher has had a Coding club in the mornings before school. Ss could come to the computer lab before class and get on https://t.co/Qy8krGpGnP. She has also started a Robotics group, as well as hosted a Rookie Robotics Roundup! #BookCampPD
A3: I literaly have a box for a room, it is half of a large closet, not condusive for kids to move around. After a day this week of a kiddo asking once again to work at the board and couldn't I got rid of the table we all are now sitting on the floor. Best move ever!. #bookcampPD
I just never feel comfortable self promoting. I very rarely mention my podcast unless it comes up, like it did now. Otherwise, I don't talk about it much. #bookcampPD
A3: No kidding but the app @writereaderapp helped me this year think outside the box when it comes to opportunities for students to become authors!!
My students are proud with all the books they published
#bookcamppd

A3: In my gamified classroom, I am very proud to say that my students are key designers! They come up with powers, curses, and loopholes.
The continue sparking my passion for my game every single day! #BookCampPD
Love that you gave him a "shout out" for the positive difference he is making. Acknowledging the tremendous efforts of others is so terrific! #BookCampPD
A4: For the past three years, we have hosted an Hour of Code event and invite parents to come in and code with their kids. So much fun! Some Ss take this time to work on projects they have already started. So fun to watch their pride as they share. #BookCampPD
