#ONedchat Archive
The idea for @onedchat stemmed from a conversation between Allison Fuisz and Amy Bowker in the Spring of 2014. They noticed a gap on Twitter where an Ontario-based education chat was concerned. After several conversations and a vision in mind, @onedchat was created.

Physically: a place with resources of some kind to create
Philosophically: A place where students can exercise their imagination
I see as physical spaces where learners can come together to share, create, invent, network, build, learn & innovate!
a space where students can be , apply approaches to their learning
Awesome to see you here tonight, Charlie! Thx for joining! https://t.co/70gp7jE2jX

Love having school leaders in our chats! Welcome! https://t.co/zW78Bbuck5
Principal and co-learner around our school MakerSpace & STEAM Room. Excited to participate tonight.
Hi - Graham from Hamilton. Teaching a 7/8 class at the moment! Excited to learn more about Makerspaces!
A1 using the tools at hand to create representations of combined knowledge streams
Makerspace is a place that provides Ss with the materials and tools necessary to try test experiment fail reevaluate and design
A1 anywhere you are able to create and learn
A1: A is a place where Ss and Ts can create without fear of failure.
Shelley from Ottawa - excited to learn about the Makerspace movement.
A1 Defined as a place for students to gather to tinker, experiment, create, learn. Growth mindset fits in somewhere too.
people often forget this. A workbench with some materials and tools is a great makerspace
Really appreciate this distinction! https://t.co/T2Vv6qrviR
Physically: a place with resources of some kind to create
Philosophically: A place where students can exercise their imagination
Love the comment about having a growth mindset!
A1: A place where stdnts can explore, create & investigate things they're interested in.
A1: A maker-space is sometimes a place, but sometimes just a state of mind.
Absolutely! A place to showcase their creativity. They can collaborate with others & share what they know. https://t.co/R0fu4x9MiY
Physically: a place with resources of some kind to create
Philosophically: A place where students can exercise their imagination
Q1: A makerspace is where anything is possible. :)
tacos are a great to talk about coding
Please do not force your students to make. Create the conditions to inspiring them to WANT to make! https://t.co/SEDS1SYYs3
I agree! Making mistakes and failing is how we learn!
I really wanted to use a Morgan Freeman pic
Where to start?? Should we have students lead the way? or Ts? a Collaboration of the two??
Q2: Best way to start a is by asking our students: "What do you want to make?"
A1 a place for Ss to create and explore
A1: physical space where activity is student led, allowing curiosity and creativity loose
I am working a couple new ones currently. Not quite ready for the room
A1: the more I learn about the more I realize it is a mindset
Jumping in late from Emmetsburg, IA. Just visited in and space in SD. Awesome Day!
So many great definitions! Question 2 is right around the corner
this space looks incredible!
Credit where credit is due, my grade 6 students made the graphics for tonight
Agreed! Its more about the process, not the product.
I think it's also very important about teaching them about the "approach" before the physical tools..
Hi guys...lil late! Andrea from TN! Microsoft IT Teacher
- honoured you are here Nathan. :). behind this tweet.
thank you :-) seeing terrific answers
. David Hann here. IT/DT/STEM/STEAM/Maker teacher ... Excited for tonight's topic!
so glad you could make it
Robert - Elem Principal Sorry I'm late...
Sorry, a bit late, but ready to partake. I'm Noa from the GTA here to talk makerspace
A2 So amazing to watch Ss work together and Make with the resources available in our school library
Q2: How do you bring student decision making into the makerspace planning and implementation process? https://t.co/qWApNKJ0H1
A1. A ever-transition, ever-growing space where Ts and Ss problem solve, theorize, create, build, code but most of all have FUN
A2: love this response, Ss need to be the driving force. It has to start with THEIR wonderings! https://t.co/2PSYSuYuDb
Totally! while we want them to make...there has to be a framework of curriculum around it.. or does there?
A2 I felt I had to learn it all first. Big mistake. Finally, just put it all out there and said, "here, figure it out".
Awesome to see that "connection: being made!
I like to talk freedom of learning
A1: It’s about having a place to mess around, experiment and create with the building blocks to something and no “right” answers
or to reflect and learn from a failure
Good evening, Daryl from MD peeking in to the . Looking to learn about
A1. A isn't a place... it's a reminder to allow time to explore and create.
A2: Create an environment where students have ownership and feel empowered
A2 we allow students to select the project and the tools that they think is best
I'd like to see more makerspaces move away from teaching in the traditional sense. https://t.co/FLHzHcluhw
I think it's also very important about teaching them about the "approach" before the physical tools..
A2: ask for student input and then implement it
A2. ideas should take S’s out of their comfort zone. Challenge them with the unknown.
A2: I like the design cycle with student voice at each step. Make sure that there are opportunities for Ss to retry iteratively
A2 let students explore and figure it out on their own
A2 I let them submit their ideas and plans for the projects they want to complete.
A2: We have a pilot group of Ss we are working with now to test out maker activities and help us design our room for next year
A2 Our TL has developed a system where makers have an idea or plan before proceeding. And yes, curriculum is there
A2: Ss had choice in the proposal we created. Their ideas were amazing!
A2- Allowing students to explore, identify and the choices they make from materials to design, all Ss lead.
Our Ss leadership team helped to design and bane our new space. Ss can choose materials and organize. https://t.co/322LtTiRz5
Q2 uses google forms and virtual makerspce to collect information and feedback to move forward.
A1 A space set aside filled with various materials where many can go to create, build, engineer. All about trying things.
I am excited too! :) Welcome! https://t.co/VRGNBT1OxO
. David Hann here. IT/DT/STEM/STEAM/Maker teacher ... Excited for tonight's topic!
A2 when planning a space, we look at school's goal and current projects. Then add tools students like to space
Ss are the best advertisers for making thru word of mouth
Forgot to punch my time card. Doug from NEPA here.
that's what i've been doing!
Kyley here from Ottawa. Excited to learn how to incorporate makerspace into a language arts classroom
A2 it all starts with the Ss. Coming from Kinder and Gr 1 -- they have amazing wonderings, questions and even problem solving!
What is the distinction between "maker" project and STEAM project. We provide parameters for STEAM work.
A1 Not quite my own words: Making objects & learning through that shared experience. &/or making artifacts that represent learning
A2: celebrate all ideas and encourage risk tasking. Nudge them out of their comfort zones.
A2: Let Ss create the part/gear shopping list after they select a project.
great to see some more Ottawa educators!
is now trending in Canada, ranking 43
Great minds think alike! 😜
great to see so many people out sharing their voice about !
I agree! The younger students don't have the same fear of failure. They also think outside the box more!
WOOOHOOO...got to love trending (let's see if we can climb the ranks) https://t.co/1xfywrm63X
is now trending in Canada, ranking 43
WOOOHOOO...got to love trending (let's see if we can climb the ranks) https://t.co/WGUI3IRx8x
is now trending in Canada, ranking 43
Q2: As kids developed skills, they starting becoming more empowered. Now kids seek me out with suggestions of what we need!
what a great idea! This way it is built for students by students
A2: celebrate all ideas and encourage risk taking. Nudge them out of their comfort zones.
if there no mess and it is not loud something is wrong
celebrate all ideas, we forget this as educators some time. "All" is daunting, but important.
Love! :) The best learning is the messiest. Take a look at my desk for example.
A2- By putting the process of design creation into SS hands.
A2: Is it set up like a club? Is it set up for 5 kids at a time? or whole classes?
Agreed! My office is part of our makerspace, for sure! I love it! https://t.co/BsH9JLfraN
Love! :) The best learning is the messiest. Take a look at my desk for example.
Question 3 is coming up in 2 minutes
start young and they will learn to embrace failures not fear them. It's about the process not just the end result
Definitely agree - can't figure out how some of my Ss have built the things they have!
Interesting the variety that my Ss enjoy: crafts are very popular, also stop motion animation,
it's important to keep their expectations grounded in reality. Materials are misused if not thought out
We have formal and informal opportunties for making. Lunch time club and hacking the curriculum via making.
the sewing machines are popular in our maker space
my students are doing stop motion animation now..they love it!!
what does a misused material look like?
Whoever's words they are, I like em!
I like the idea of stations for small groups
who cares? Students love it.
Kaitlyn - 5th grade teacher from Camarillo, CA
A2- Let Ss embrace process fromm imagining to the importance of iterating - living life of a project https://t.co/Usr5m0zZKc
We also need to move away from the traditional science fair model to a
Sure. However, we provide guidance for parts that are resuable for other projects.
Just "discovered" stop motion today and I can't wait!
Complete agreement. Younger students less preconceived notion of "right" answer or way to do things
My custodian isn't ;) ...but he loves me anyways...I think.
We hope to have a badge system like the one mentioned in Steam Makers to have Ss become leaders with equipment
A2. Allowing for personal choice, imploring Ss to problem solve and fail.
Id say something that Ss dont use towards fruition of the project. Its a good teaching moment tho!
Do you have whole classes come together?
A3: A makerspace doesn't have to be big, often a call home to parents for extra tools and materials can get you started.
A3: Supplying your makerspace is all about SUPPORTING your themes, which doesn't necessarily even mean buying a thing!
A3: reuse materials that would otherwise go to waste or be forgotten!
I went for a walk in the school basement...amazing what i found
My custodians understand- they told me they wished they had a space like ours when they were in school :) https://t.co/qU7GB4vy8R
My custodian isn't ;) ...but he loves me anyways...I think.
IMO there's powerful learning potential when content of and the application of intersect. https://t.co/sjoX3RMJAz
What is the distinction between "maker" project and STEAM project. We provide parameters for STEAM work.
A3 we have a tech fund on the higher d level. At schools, we use and donation boxes
Our space is often chaotic. 10+ things happening at once.
A3: Our plan is to use grant funding, donations, cleaning out toy chests and closets, garage sales... https://t.co/o9Y5oPN3yv
this is so cute!! Well done!
A3- Support from parents, community reuse any materials.
just ask your community, everyone has "stuff"
A1- A place where students gather to create, invent, tinker, explore & discover using a wide variety of tools & materials.
You found the words I was thinking of .. preconceived!
Our 1st makerspace station consisted of a rotting orange, a paper sign & 1 makey-makey. Created a buzz! https://t.co/5qyUI0QAcj
a3. Just give Ss space and get out of there way
A3: We have a Design course in our MYP, but I have had a makerspace centre for 2 units with Lego and found/repurposed objects
A3: We received a grant and another grant from our Mentor Schools Foundation
A3: We are very lucky to be the recipients of a grant to get us started. We also have a lot of donations. https://t.co/7lB55yJ7JO
I got an email saying, " I was told you had every box in the building." 😳 oops! https://t.co/BbpYhYxEBy
My custodian isn't ;) ...but he loves me anyways...I think.
A3: TLLP funding and the generosity of our community. Lots of donations coming in!
A3: Generic Legos are the bomb, a Raspberry Pi is the spark.
A3- with curious, creative thinkers. The supplies will come with the ideas they generate.
A3: Lots from dollar store. Requests for donations in school newsletter. Always looking to reuse & repurpose what we have
A3 our school team put together a proposal and we got funding. parents who were spring cleaning donated 'beautiful stuff'
A3 Part 2: Our district has been really supportive and our incredible PTA donated supply funds
A3: Finding items around your house, asking for donations from companies or parents in the community
A3- Getting a grant and connecting to makers community members.
A3: Community donation drives make great collections
A3: Arts, crafts, glue guns, popsicle sticks &
open-source electronics such as Arduino in our https://t.co/p8x7o8VYwE
A3: great opportunity for student leadership in getting kids to spread the word for resource roundup
A3 : system support $; school budget $; donation $; School Council to help sustain
Q3: Mixture of budgets - LLC, Grade Level, (my pers budget :} ...Board Creative Zone
Some think tech in a pushes Ss out of their comfort zone, but IMO, it is the opportunity for open-ended exploration
Jumping in late...Ed Kemnitzer, Executive Assistant for Tech Integration in Massapequa on Long Island, NY
Yes! Low to no-cost materials are just as fun to explore as high tech items. Let the kids lead the needs. https://t.co/drVygtuP5c
A3: Supplying your makerspace is all about SUPPORTING your themes, which doesn't necessarily even mean buying a thing!
that is a judgement call, you need to break eggs to make an omelet. let it play out as long as it is safe.
A3: Anyone use a "mobile makerspace?" I'm envisioning a cart that can be "booked" & rolled to different classrooms.
we use stop motion studio.
Canadian Tire also sells 3D printers. Cdn Tire $$ drive? Would love one of those :)
A3: A grant and donations to start...we have some thinking to do regarding replenishing consumables. https://t.co/HbPmj9HcvS
We are collecting "throw away" items for a take apart station like the one mentioned in
Recyclable stuff, kids bring in some stuff, and I added up yesterday that I had spent 270.00 since 3-11 https://t.co/cHeN7Iif2h
Travis Lape technology integrationist Harrisburg SD and a stalker friend ;)
A3 Beg, borrow, steal Ha, Ha. Stole my sons old Legos. I've bought things, parents donated, looking for grant money.
found a cheap one on Kijiji
Love your storage bins! So organized...me not so much. :}
I like your vision. Who restocks? Does it have a power bar for hot glue and soldering? I'd like to play this out with you
I look at everything differently! Large tp rolls from faculty BR make perfect maze tubes
A2. Asked the students what they would like to see in their Makerspace.
A3 I funded most of mine through and from my budget which is totally fundraisers done my me! YAY!
we use stop motion studio
We've had tons of items donated. Be sure you have storage solutions + a system to organize. https://t.co/qDzZCoMjBh
A3: Our plan is to use grant funding, donations, cleaning out toy chests and closets, garage sales... https://t.co/o9Y5oPN3yv
A3- Grants, & donations. If you don't ask, the answer is always no!
A3: connect your makers to companies and share your story. We did this with
love this idea! Never seen this done but definitely a great idea. How would it work? Have you seen it?
Perhaps it includes a battery kit to make it more mobile? Plug-in @ end of day
Glad you could make it! :)) https://t.co/oSwqRYcDbd
Travis Lape technology integrationist Harrisburg SD and a stalker friend ;)
A3 Can use a lot of free stuff too. Paper towel rolls, cereal boxes, empty containers...
A3- had a printer donated by & donors!
Check out what is doing in Elizabeth Forward SD. They have a RV! https://t.co/V7rFugOn3b
A3: Anyone use a "mobile makerspace?" I'm envisioning a cart that can be "booked" & rolled to different classrooms.
I am starting to visualize this. Keep going...
Some boards have bins you can sign out from school to school. Think this is a great idea .
Check out for a large scale version of mobile
I've tried to have the kids use in their projects
this is a cool idea. I have a laptop cart, I could see that easily being converted, has a power source
thanks! Will check it out for sure!
except "messy" terrifies many people :) - it IS unsettling - but we do learn when we are pushed/stretched
an "idea" section where half-started projects can get a fresh perspective from a different class
London, ON has a makerbus too.
A deconstruction station is fun. Broken toys and discarded electronics make for good learning opps in a
A4: In order to meet all learners' needs, we need to hear all voices as to what they want to explore. Students should lead!
I'm thinking, too, for the occasional teacher who may want to borrow a "space" for a short time.
I think it's important to try and use it in many contexts - curriculum related and non-curriculum related
A4: We have a lrg FNMI pop in our school. We're bringing in traditional materials into our space as well. Leather, beading, etc.
I heloed "reverse engineer" a robot dog the other day...so much fun, kids had a blast
A4: Great makerspaces democratize learning- materials, resources, concepts are available to ALL students.
A4: Never Stop Asking for Student Input
Fun. It can be like the side car of a motorcycle. I'm seeing something Bert would push (Mary Poppins) mixed with Bill Nye
A4: We have to make sure that the makerspace meets the needs of the techie and also the cardboard builder.
If we're truly giving them choice, in a way we are always meeting their needs.
A4 Letting all students have a voice/choice in their learning
I think that you are really onto something. Please keep everyone posted as it evolves. I'm inspired by this, Graham!
listening in and providing guiding questions, by helping them to tap in to experts and by encouraging trial and error.
That's the beauty of --every student can find something of interest + that they are good at. https://t.co/Azx6Avymkl
what an interesting image, thank you for sharing that
A3. Our School Council and Home and School Association work hard to support our maker space
A4- Letting Ss lead, learn together, give feedback and reflect about their choices and creations.
A4 Giving students opportunities to work in pairs or small groups as well as alone. Collaboration helps the tentative.
I know I am really late. Just got home from school. Parent presentation on social media
A4: Listen to kids voices and let stdnts choose. Provide variety of activities/options so something for everyone
Again, that's why student voice is so important.
It'll be put onto my "back burner" - only so much an occasional T can do! *superhero sound plays*
it's been great - students have had to come up with a question - some sewed, some cooked, some made video games
A4 Providing open ended AND more structured activities for those that need support to get started.
I think that sounds brilliant!
You never know when saying the right thing at the right time can take you.
Sorry I have to cut this one short. Great talking to everyone tonight! Keep the conversation going!
feed their wonderings let Ss explore
Makerspaces need to build over time according to student interest and readiness- they are not built in one day :)
It is a must, for sure https://t.co/sgHmXZRLqP
except "messy" terrifies many people :) - it IS unsettling - but we do learn when we are pushed/stretched
A4. Get to know the makers what makes them tick. Keep current. Value past.
A4: Provide choice of materials, ways to track progress, ways to communicate learning and grow from reflection
A4 having a variety of options and choices and allowing students to pick what they want to pursue.
Exactly! Knowing the students is crucial to engagement https://t.co/J0OotilDe0
A4: We have to make sure that the makerspace meets the needs of the techie and also the cardboard builder.
. good reminder of the need to get ALL stakeholders onside w/ a
Provide easy entry/no limit projects/tools.They can feel successful & then there is no limit 2 where they can take it
my pleasure Derek! Excited to learn
context is important ...... we don't want to make just to make..is there balance?
they also say that about Rome ;) ok I'll get serious now...
My Young Makers keep a journal, sometimes simply writing, "I love this club".
By listening and actively giving them opportunties to build upon their passions. We are "dream facilitators"!!
alot of them used "unity" and "scratch" I have no idea how to use either of them!
A4: Allow everyone opportunity to participate & share ideas. Encourage it! Celebrate creations even if they don't go as planned.
Always a work in progress! https://t.co/dEG7sMTeSK
Makerspaces need to build over time according to student interest and readiness- they are not built in one day :)
I love this!!! By listening and actively giving them opportunties to build upon their passions. We are "dream facilitators"!!
If it doesn't, keep at it. You have to see all Ss to reach all students- great lenses from which to plan for learning
Yes, low threshold - high ceiling opportunities are key! Open exploration!
We must get our of our Ss ways and let them make.
That's fun. Care to add Mexico?
A4: Ss leave reflections on our writable glass tables. Their comments reflect joy of project based learning
We have Ss using our space for SS, ELA, and Music this week. Our Media Center is a buzzing.
Keep tweeting and it might just!
Check out the app from called RECAP great reflection tool. https://t.co/R7QhGktyET
A4: Ss leave reflections on our writable glass tables. Their comments reflect joy of project based learning
Oh the power of an empty cardboard box...worlds to be uncovered and built
Q5, my favourite graphic, is right around the corner!
A4: I think a makerspace can help students to feel more socially included while also targeting academic growth.
Reflecting and sharing their learning building a community of risk takers.
A4: Couldn't agree more, Be aware of your learners! https://t.co/k0dABiFi8C
Exactly! Knowing the students is crucial to engagement https://t.co/J0OotilDe0
A4: We have to make sure that the makerspace meets the needs of the techie and also the cardboard builder.
Makerspace has Ss coming back to my room instead of going outside to play in gym...they want to explore more...I just let them!
Whoo hoo! is trending on !
You can never have enough cardboard in a
wow, has it been 45mins? Keep the amazing coming everyone!
And a community of learners who do it on their own but support each other
are ways to get Ss away from consuming information and onto producing their learning.
Wish I could rt this many times over! https://t.co/IarHtKfACE
Yes, low threshold - high ceiling opportunities are key! Open exploration!
. have you seen ??? Very cool cardboard tool!
A1: My school is new to the maker culture this year. Building an environment and building capacity.
love how FDK's love of learning is so pure
We got to see a bit of music class. Simply amazing!
Looks like I am very late to the chat, maybe next time?
I haven't, but I look forward to. Thanks!
making it accessible to Ts, they need to buy-in too!
A growth mindset along with flexibility.
A5: student engagement (the rest will flow naturally)
A5: Passion & Dedication...and maybe a decent shop vac.
so glad you got to see that. Love the creative things those Ss came up with to make 3 sounds.
I have faith in your ability...2 questions left!
A5 An open minded supportive principal helps!
A3: in Toronto, is a great supplier for maker teachers!
A5. Supportive administration
A5: Successful makerspaces must celebrate successes and FAILURES!
A5: Trust students, release control, be fearless.
A5: the freedom and expectation to make mistakes
A5: The ability to relinguish control and let your students go! That, and the physical stuff too.
More on my thematic approach to planning makerspaces: https://t.co/yvylr7QDsW Used this in PK-12 spaces and it never fails.
A5: Successful makerspaces embody the growth mindset.
A4. When we all learn together, Admin, Ts and Ss, building a learning culture
A5 The willingness to let Ss take the reigns and choose their path to learn about what interests them.
That is why everyone should join our summer PD. I learned from and now getting to help others https://t.co/iG6AhYwn2C
Q5 - takes open minds and opportunities for exploration. Use of materials that are open ended and time to reflect.
A5: Teacher feedback & support (no desk sitting), student engagement, planning, authentic scenarios & real audiences for products
not always so tidy! We do love glitter and glue time and so do the Ss.
RT RT RT YES! Autonomy and trust are essential. We must let go and our school leaders must trust us. https://t.co/j1gtTDPFKS
A5: Trust students, release control, be fearless.
calls those Ss "Procumers" Actively participating while consuming!
A5- It is more than just a space it is about passion & having Ss reflect & get feedback by sharing with the community.
The freedom to take risks, be innovative thinkers, community support, the ability to fail and try again. https://t.co/VS1jSljbWD
Love the need for "authentic scenarios and real audiences"
A4: Opportunities for maker buddies! Gr 3's & gr 7's testing their paper airplanes in the hall! https://t.co/vpcIDgJY96
Awesome! I love the no desks concept!
A5 Materials and an understanding from admin that this is real learning and not simply "play"
A5: Flexibility and culture of support
A5. TIME! That is soo huge. Lesson of the bells teaches kids that nothing is worth finishing (or starting) -
Q5 Ss valued/needed as equal team members. Open mindset to creativity; mistakes as part of path to success.
this is an important point.
We (They) keeping taking play away and yet it is essential for fostering a love of learning
Let your Ss tell you what the space needs. Just last week had Ss ask for sewing machines. We have 3 now for making. Empower Ss!
A5 dedicated and passionate adults and children who embrace the concept and share it with others -- lots of stuff helps too!
A5: Patience, time, enthusiasm, innovation, from Tt & Ss
As a principal I have to agree. We need to let teachers take charge. My job is to support them.
I challenge someone to show me engaged play where learning isn't happening
lots of research into play-based learning - Teachers are learning, too!
RT : I challenge someone to show me engaged play where learning isn't happening
