Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Hey #ksedchat friends, before we get started..best website/app my chromebook classroom should use for my new green screen? Also, green screen lesson ideas?? I teach 6th..all subjects! 🤩
Q1: we post event reminders on our school FB page, & livestream events for families that can’t come in person. We provide incentives and translators when possible #ksedchat
A1: I try to communicate with parents in whatever format works for them. Note, email, phone, #ClassDoJo. I also tried to meet my parents when it works for THEM. Before school, after, during lunch, etc. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A1: I send personal notes home and ask them to be returned with signatures committing to a conference and send texts the day of to each family. I want to do student led conferences next time!! #goals#engageallfamilies#ksedchat
A1 constant contact with parents, both positive behavior phone calls and those ever lovely hard conversations. Just like teaching, we build these relationships to ensure our classroom is a welcoming space for all. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1) We centered our conferences on IPS and they were student led. Students and advisory teachers were both involved in reaching out to parents about attending. Administrators were at the front door and making laps in the halls to welcome and help people find their way #ksedchat
A1: Always having an open door for families to come in, not just PTC or special events. This builds a trusting relationship. #ksengageallfamilies#KSedchat
#ksedchat A1. Food. In October we hosted a showcase night during PTC so parents could see the products their students made in a cross-curricular PBL unit. We served pastries from a local bakery while parents observed their kids’ work.
A1: I try to communicate with parents in whatever format works for them. Note, email, phone, #ClassDoJo. I also tried to meet my parents when it works for THEM. Before school, after, during lunch, etc. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A1: I am always emailing parents and trying to get them to come to literacy night, Spirit-Nights. I also offer free tutoring and ALWAYS ask for feedback from my parents. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat#KSedchat
A1: #ksengageallfamilies#KSedchat we start with student led conferences that show off leadership skills and awards. We invite often in our newsletters in our 4 field trips in 2nd.
A1: I use @BloomzApp for parents to sign up when it works best for them. If they can’t meet on those nights I adjust to for their schedule. We’re a team!#ksedchat
A1: Provide child care & food. Families will often come with both available at a reasonable time given the employers of the community. In my school in CO we move PTC to the local church & increased from 22% to 78% attendance- make it work for them! #ksedchat
A1 Parent Teacher Conferences can be more of a partnership when Ts ask for input from parents prior to the conference - flipping the conference in a way #ksedchat
A1: @jgerber_ really pushed positive parent contacts. Like a lot of schools we moved to students led conferences where times are scheduled. We also try to encourage teachers to use community members to present/guest speak/judge... #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1 constant contact with parents, both positive behavior phone calls and those ever lovely hard conversations. Just like teaching, we build these relationships to ensure our classroom is a welcoming space for all. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1: I always have an open door for students and parents to communicate with myself. Some of our Parents follow their student on Canvas. I see them out in the community and other public events. Being seen is a must. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A1: Constant communication. Starting the year off with positive notes and phone calls home. Sending reminders about school events and activities. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1 cont) Communication is key to making families feel welcome. Communicate early and often to build relationships and ensure everyone is on the same team and pulling in the same direction. #ksedchat
A1: @jgerber_ really pushed positive parent contacts. Like a lot of schools we moved to students led conferences where times are scheduled. We also try to encourage teachers to use community members to present/guest speak/judge... #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1: When I was in the classroom I would have a candy dish set out b/c I knew Ps would often bring other kids with them and I would always offer it (to the kid and parent haha). I would also stand up to greet them and smile. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1: I have soft, instrumental music playing in the background and Hershey minis. :) More than anything, though, it's the way you welcome the Ps into your room and how you talk with them. They are the biggest part of their child's education. Treat them as such! #ksedchat
My dad’s school up in Grand Island, Nebraska cooks up and serves free hotdogs during the evening hours of their PTC. He told me there was an 80% increase in parent attendance the year they started serving the hotdogs. #ksedchat
A1 we have student twitter leaders who tweet out pictures and learning from classrooms. Flattens the walls for our families to get a glimpse of our daily learning #ksedchat
I put chocolate at my table! I also have activities for young siblings to do at my table. Before PTC I send home an email invite to all my students' parents or guardians. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1: Constant communication. Starting the year off with positive notes and phone calls home. Sending reminders about school events and activities. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1: it can be as simple as not sitting across from the parents at a big teacher desk. Like for parents to see me as a partner #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1: When I was in the classroom I would have a candy dish set out b/c I knew Ps would often bring other kids with them and I would always offer it (to the kid and parent haha). I would also stand up to greet them and smile. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A2: our school does email blasts and updates the website. Also use class dojo. A downfall is online comm is instantaneous and Ps might not read the communication for meaning. I know I’m guilty of it w/ my own kids #ksedchat
A1 ensuring that parents feel welcomed, and that the time that you spend with them is purposeful and valued. Showing parents that you care about their child, not only academically, says so much to them. Also, keeping the communication open. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A2: All the ways! Send notes home (find a translator if necessary), phone calls, email, social media, class website/blog. The most effective I have found is to get KIDS to want to be there. Parents will follow. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A2: I use twitter, Facebook, school website, notes Home, and Seesaw as a way to let parents know what is happening in the library during conference days(book fair) #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A2) Social media and email is a great way to reach a large audience. We also utilize Blackboard Connect to send calls and texts. As a teacher I would sit with my students and have them call home and invite their families. This was very effective #ksedchat
A2: biggest challenge is getting everyone in. We have even taken half days so we meet parents from 12-8 pm one day a week the last two years. Allows our night shift parents to come in and visit. #KSedchat#ksengageallfamilies
#ksedchat Q2. At least 2 weeks prior to PTC, I make sure to contact all parents via email and/or phone to invite them and let them know the hours. Biggest challenge is time to make the calls.
A2: HS can be a little more difficult but in addition to trad means, we use social media, websites but also take advantage of face 2 face contact at games, plays, community events where you can talk in a more relaxed setting. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies (longest hashtag ever!)
A2 started putting more images and infographics into our weekly @SmorePages newsletters. Found that the images with less text can be more powerful #ksedchat
A2: Almost every adult at the school has an advisory group. As an advisor, we're responsible for communicating with families on a more personal level. Of course there are newsletters and e-mails as well. #KSedchat
A2: Notes, texts, and I love adding a personalized message in my students’ planners. (Ex: Can’t wait to share your awesome ness with your parents tonight) Our District uses FB, email, voice and text reminders as well. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A2: Social media, morning announcements, flyers/notes home, our scrolling marquee... it’s not really a challenge but we translate the majority of stuff into Spanish. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A1: Welcome parents at the door like I do their students ever day. Make the open house night informative yet informal and light spirited. I focus the on establishing a parnership between myself and the parents. #ksedchat
I think it works if your parents know where the students academics are at already. Then you don’t focus on grades, but successes. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A2 We write notes in our agenda every night, and if we have some other event at the school we will print off a note to be stapled in their agendas. These are also translated to the parent's native language. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies

A2: I send notes, emails, FB & Twitter notices. My school sends email & automated calls. The biggest challenge is everyone schedule is full with sports, dance, faith formation... just getting home, fed, bath and bed. Too much to do & can’t come. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A2 Sending out emails, reminders home in the agenda or a note, phone calls a few days before work well too. Challenges that occur can vary from school to school depending on the demographics. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A2 how many schools have taken the time to ask their families how they prefer to receive their information (facebook, website, email, twitter...)? Can open up new lines of communication #ksedchat
A2: Social media highway, local paper articles, seesaw, email 100% HS Ss & parents, text notes. Everyone knows about our events, they choose not to show for some. Working to find out exactly why. #ksedchat
I use a class Instagram page that many of my parents follow. I also share individual successes through Remind and FB Messenger. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
In my room we write down what the kids do everyday, in hopes that the parent sees it; signatures on the agenda earn the students #ClassDojo, we even include the Specials they went to. Prioritizing is just hitting the main idea of what we did. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A2: we do dialers home that blast parents’ preferred form (email, call, text). We post to our school FB page. I started using Remind with my clubs #KSedchat
A3 if your school has a public relations expert, be sure to tap into their resources and expertise. They can help analyze analytics, craft key messages, market and brand a school #ksedchat
A2 open house is more challenging because it happens b4 spending time with students. I rely on the admin Tweeting, FB, and sending out info for that. PTC is easier to send home notes with students (translated into appropriate lang.) & send emails #ksedchat I#ksengageallfamilies
A2: I communicate through many different avenues, trying to reach as many parents as I can. I use a class FB page, Remind101, notes home, text messages, and phone calls. It surprises me what works best, with different classes! #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A3) We have decided that academics, in this day and age, should be addressed long before conferences. We focused on each students IPS, what they want to do post-high school and how we can set them up to be successful to do that when they graduate. #ksedchat
A3: I send a weekly newsletter. However, if the info is really important, I send an email with the info IN the heading. We also make notes in the agenda, I tell the Ss to tell Ps & I make phone calls, the great, the bad & the priority. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A3 Especially at family events & PTC, we have interpreters in the building to help the parents navigate through these events. We typically show the student's growth, and areas in which they could you support. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A2: Our district does a very good job of advertising PTC. I offer the students incentives for their parents' attendance. Surprise and delights if you're familiar with @BuddyBerry#ksedchat
#ksedchat A3. First semester PTC info is one of the first face-to-face contacts I have with parents so I prioritize getting to know them in person before talking progress and grades. Second semester is focused more on looking ahead to the next year.
A2: I communicate through many different avenues, trying to reach as many parents as I can. I use a class FB page, Remind101, notes home, text messages, and phone calls. It surprises me what works best, with different classes! #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A3: I use the Ss progress report and the data I get from screening the Ss on ESGI, which shows exactly what the S knows and does not know. I use that printout to share with Ps how they can best help their child. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A3: We share a lot of photos of classroom activities, started sharing more videos because parents liked them. Originally focusing on “special” lessons but found that parents liked to see what was happening regardless even if we didn’t find it picture worthy #ksedchat
A3-I start off with a positive & share something their Ss have done in class. Then I ask if they have ?’s. Then I discuss things that are going on in the class. Or any concerns. #ksedchat
A3 cont) There was time for families to meet with teachers to discuss academics but their specific student led conference was all they had to attend. Conferences were very well attended (over 80% at a high school!) and we got very positive feedback! #ksedchat
A3: I go through the three Rs of importance: it it relevant, relatable and rewarding. We try and only message a newsletter once a week. Otherwise we keep it short and sweet. #KSedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A3 we found that the less clicks a parent has to do the more likely they will open it and read it. EX, if they have to download a pdf vs. reading the content directly in the email. Something for us all to remember #ksedchat
A3: ALWAYS have something good to say about the S. I had student folders (like a portfolio) of their work and we would use those to guide our conversations. We would talk about goals they set and how we could achieve them. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A3: Show students growth through their work. I usually have a breakdown of grades and different events that are happening at school. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
This year I had all the forms ready at open house. I even had my Facebook page pulled up on my SmartTV, so they could use my computer to add themselves! It actually worked really well! #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
I have Faced Times a parent over my lunch and had PT Conferences during my plan time. I have met parents at sports meets over the weekend. I can’t do this all the time, but I do it when I can to keep everyone engaged. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A3: Part 2: Any time I talk to parents I use the compliment sandwich. Start with a positive, sneak in the need or struggle, and end with another positive! #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A4 for some families, school was not a positive experience. We took conferences to the local community center and held conferences & meetings there to make it more comfortable for some of our families #ksedchat
A3: I focus on achievement and growth. I always make it a priority to highlight student successes. Some students are terrified of having their parents attend conferences. I make every conference a positive experience while still addressing necessary issues. #ksedchat
A4: we have a translator at conferences. We send home info in two languages. We have an office staff member who speaks Spanish for phone calls home. Most of my students are also able to translate for Parents #KSedchat
Q4 I know that some schools have interpreters that are available to translate during PTC. Knowing your students and families in that aspect really help you in being ready for such events. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
#ksedchat A3. I’m in charge of a ~20 student advisory group so I’m the first person a parent goes to during PTC. I try my best to give a big-picture idea of then student’s performance and then prioritize which other teachers parents should see.
A3: As a building leader it is allowing teachers to know their Ss and to present what information is needed not making it a cookie cutter conference for all! #ksedchat
A4 My school is over 75% ELL, therefore we have both ESOL teachers in each grade level and translators who help guide parents through the PTC and family events. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A4) Having support staff available to help is a key in this, but the first thing you have to do is anticipate the needs of your families. You have to plan ahead if you need interpreters, signers, etc. You only get one chance to make that first impression and connect #ksedchat
A4 My school is over 75% ELL, therefore we have both ESOL teachers in each grade level and translators who help guide parents through the PTC and family events. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A3: If the school sends a note home about it, I try and make a Facebook and Remind101 post, too. Then, I send reminder texts and make reminder calls to my parents that have requested those forms of communication. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A4: We have translators at out conferences. Make sure information given to the parents is delivered in a way they can understand it. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A4: We have a high Hispanic population so we always have translators available at conferences. We use the paras and have had HS cheerleaders who needed community service hours to come translate also. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
#ksedchat A4. The #ELL team at my school works to make sure we have a translator available for each of the major foreign languages represented. This includes Arabic, Swahili, Spanish, Nepali, and Burmese. Then we try to schedule parents while translators are available.
A4: I am blessed to work in a school that is very culturally diverse. I encourage my diverse students to share their culture with me and their classmates, which ultimately carries through to conferences with parents. Truly helps to establish trust, which is essential. #ksedchat
A3 I used to have Ss write in their agendas & Ps sign. District no longer uses agendas, so I send home letters (translated), or call home translator if needed, when coaching I use the Remind app. I prioritize by change: grades, behavior, schedules #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A5 important to realize that family engagement doesn't always have to be at school. What can we do to create that home & school connection outside of school? #ksedchat
That’s awesome that you have high school students who can act as translators. We normally depend on older siblings in a pinch. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A4: We have an interpreter that attends events. We, also, translate all letters. I personally send home homework and notes in both languages. We have a school ESOL page, too! #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A4: We have a high Hispanic population so we always have translators available at conferences. We use the paras and have had HS cheerleaders who needed community service hours to come translate also. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
Google Translate and iTranslate. Google lets you translate written text and iTranslate lets you dictate text for it to translate for you. Not always 100% correct but better than nothing. #ksedchat
A5: We offer opportunities for parents to come back for events like Lunch & Learns, cookie decorating around Christmas time, and other events hosted by our parent coordinators. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A5: I always asked parents at the beginning of the year their personal hobbies, careers, and expertise areas. I then invite them to be part of our learning through PBL or other opportunities. #KSedchat#ksengageallfamilies
Q5 I know that right now we are working on customs and beliefs in my room, and I was hoping to have the students talk with their families about their customs and beliefs. Keeping parents involved with what the kids are learning is vital. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A6: some years, I have contacted parents for a mini conference at the end of the year, because that is an important step to the next year. I also send pics all over my media, to keep parents coming back. Visuals are powerful. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A5 Offer opportunities for them to be a larger part of the school, let them know of upcoming events they can be part of and I also try to do a follow up email or text. #ksedchat
A5) Find reasons to invite them to come to the building and engage in what is going on at school. This works well for concerts and ballgames, but what else can we do to involve families? We have to improve on the "drop-off" in family engagement after conferences. #ksedchat
A6: some years, I have contacted parents for a mini conference at the end of the year, because that is an important step to the next year. I also send pics all over my media, to keep parents coming back. Visuals are powerful. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A5 our parent site council is going to develop a vision for what engagement looks like at our school. Will use this vision to make sure we are creating experiences that reach all of our families #ksedchat
A5 I encourage families to visit the school's book fair and other family events. I've also made it a class competition between the 5th grade classes to see which class can have the most parents, definitely gets the kids to want to bring their parents to these events #ksedchat
A4 mostly the use of interpreters and let them know how much I enjoy having their S and thank them for sharing their child w me #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A5: We have family engagement nights monthly. I encourage families to come and attend myself. I invite them to activities in my classroom and encourage them to stop in! #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A5: I make sure to say "This is what I will do at school to help your child be successful. These are some ideas you can use at home to support what we're doing in the classroom." #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A5: engagement afterwards starts with a volunteer list. We put down things they can do for a little bit or a lot of time. They sign up while they wait. This can be field day, out last field trip or even helping read. #KSedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A6: each month, my school has a “family engagement activity” that we showcase, school wide, each month. We also invite parents to our schoolwide morning meeting EVERY Friday to keep them coming in and staying involved. #ksedchat
Our school continues to have family engagement nights after parent-teacher conference. I continue to let parents know what we are doing in the classroom.
#ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A2: Again, emails and twitter. I try to interact with families whenever I see them out around town or at different events. My goal for this semester is to improve my parent communication! I struggle to remember to send the email every now and then!
Q5 I know that right now we are working on customs and beliefs in my room, and I was hoping to have the students talk with their families about their customs and beliefs. Keeping parents involved with what the kids are learning is vital. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A5: We make positive contacts home, 3 students each week! The parents really appreciate it! I also try to post pictures on social media and more recently been trying to go LIVE with activities so parents can get a better picture (literally) what their kids are doing! #KSedchat
A2: Again, emails and twitter. I try to interact with families whenever I see them out around town or at different events. My goal for this semester is to improve my parent communication! I struggle to remember to send the email every now and then!
A5 we have began a mentoring hour to build relationships with Ss. Thru this I contact Ps with calls, letters, and grade book messages. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
Q6 I know when I was observing in a classroom, I was sitting in on conferences and the students made a flyer that they were going to present to their parent during the conference. They really seemed to enjoy this and were held more accountable. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A5 I have to remember that we will never be able to create an experience that everyone will be able to attend or enjoy. Thus, it is important to offer a variety of experiences at a variety of times and days of the week #ksedchat
Student lead conferences are great if you have practiced or set up guidelines so Ss know the expectations I also want an interpreter if they are speaking a different language so I know the S is being accurate/honest. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A5: We have family engagement nights monthly. I encourage families to come and attend myself. I invite them to activities in my classroom and encourage them to stop in! #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
A5: Follow up as much as possible! If we set a plan for their student that is struggling, I try to touch base after about a week via email or phone call. I'll also use games to check in with parents in person for a quick chat. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
Q6: I am exploring the idea of student led conferences. I have recently started implementing @TheLeaderinMe in my classroom and part of that includes student led conferences. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
In reply to
@rachapman77, @jdjbmgroff, @TheLeaderinMe
A6 I love the idea of a student led conference. It helps to make the students accountable and builds that relationship of trust with both the student and the parents. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
I have Faced Times a parent over my lunch and had PT Conferences during my plan time. I have met parents at sports meets over the weekend. I can’t do this all the time, but I do it when I can to keep everyone engaged. #ksengageallfamilies#ksedchat
Loved our SLCs this past year and look forward to improving them for next year. It is such a natural tie to IPS and it is a different conversation that takes place. Our parent feedback was great. #ksedchat
A6: Had our first one this year. Overall good. Total parent attendance was way up, students took good ownership and better information was shared for each conference. One concern, personally I saw fewer parents than years past. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A6: We did SLC this fall and over all the feedback was positive! I appreicate the accountability it puts on teh student to answer some of the questions about grades/missing assignments/etc. Also allows them to openly be proud of positives and brag a little bit #KSedchat
A6: Not in PreK. However, I do encourage Ps to bring their children with them, especially if there are tough things to talk about. That was the S knows were all on the same page to help that child be successful! #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A6 student led conferences can have a variety of looks - 1:1 with Ps, Ss, Ts. Can be "center" based where students showcase learning to families. Can incorporate technology & flip the conference with important info ahead of time so the conference can be more discussion #ksedchat
Each teacher is expected to contact 3 parents a week. But at the MS level we have 60-120 students. Each parent in the MS has been give a positive comment at least once, most have multiple contacts throughout the year #ksedchat
We do a parent university every year. We had really good attendance when we switched our math curriculum. I would love for parents to come to a parent #edcamp event. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A6 I was curious as to when students should be doing more leading during a conference; I do not see a 1st grader fully understanding everything? #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A6: The first student-led conference I was part of was actually an IEP meeting. The S made a PowerPoint for it! Instead of the T just going over stuff. Definitely cool. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
A6: Not in PreK. However, I do encourage Ps to bring their children with them, especially if there are tough things to talk about. That was the S knows were all on the same page to help that child be successful! #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
We started last year with a book study for staff and teaching the habits. We haven’t gotten into the full program yet (trying to figure out $) #ksedchat it has been very positive. #ksengageallfamilies

Hey #ksedchat! Do you love coffee, conversation, and collab time? If you’re in SEK and want to meet up for #coffeeedu at @AneMaesCoffee in Indy, we’d love to see you there! No agenda, just building your teacher tribe!

Sometimes they're a little shy about Ps knowing how they're acting. I soften it by saying that we're all just trying to help him/her do their best at school. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
Parents had questions, but worked 2 jobs. So I offerd to Face Time to save on 10 emails. Same situation for for PT Conference over Plan Time. 1:00 worked for the Parent & I didn’t mind, so they came in. #KSedchat
We use to have them all on Tuesdays and at the same time. We have recently started switching up the night and adjusting the time some. Some are 5-7, others are 6-8.
A6: I always encourage students to come and be part of their IEP’s, they are the most important member of the team. It is so important to talk with them as opposed to around them #ksedchat
A7: Most parents say they don't really have Qs because I make it a point to keep them so informed on what's going on in class and with their S. I think this is huge, though, because they still come to conferences!! #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
It was very informative. We asked to have the classified do it this year. They need the background knowledge too so we all use the same terms. #ksedchat#ksengageallfamilies
I agree. I think it depends on the 1st grader. Some of my littles could Definitely lead their own conference, others would need a little guidance. But all could respond on self reflection. #KSedchat
