A1- It means being open and honest with someone and supporting them as they work towards their goals. It doesn't mean enable or baby them. Sometimes encouragement comes in the form of tough love. #engagechat
A1: Be the inspiration for someone to be their very best- even if they don't know what their best is, yet! Do that through positive reinforcement, conversations, & doing the work! Many times, you are encouraging others just by the work you do everyday! #engagechat

My former superintendent @pammoran always said, "Try to get to yes." When teachers have ideas, when students have ideas, I always try to get to yes. It's changed my outlook as a leader and it permissions both Ts and Ss to ideate and take risks. #EngageChat

Encouragement is most meaningful when it is honest- when it highlights our strengths but also does not shadow the need for growth because we need both. When we encourage- we sharpen the focus of others so they find their fortitude to conquer both their fears & doubts #EngageChat
Wow! I've never heard encouragement this way, but I love this idea. I will be mindful about taking this approach towards encouragement! Thank you for sharing this! #engagechat

A1: To give support and hope. To work alongside teachers to support their efforts. To have a relationship with teachers that fosters trust and confidence in your leadership. Thus teachers feel confident that admin has their best interest at heart. #EngageChat
A1: To offer a helping hand or a comforting word to someone who can only see the storm now and not the sunshine beyond the present situation. #engagechat
Well said. Has to be both the positives and the growth areas...otherwise it is just praise. Which praise is fine...but encouragement helps motivate to push forward. #engagechat
I love this! Makes me think of growth mindset, and the balance of building confidence AND the importance of growing and striving to be better! #EngageChat
A1: Encouragement means to bring hope and courage to someone through your words and actions to carry out their vision, even when itโs different from your own. #EngageChat
Hi Beth - thanks for the memory of โyesโ - when we encourage and support others by empowering their creativity and autonomy, giving that power away brings such powerful work into play within a school community! #EngageChat
In what role do you serve? This definitely speaks to me in my coaching role. Relationships are everything! And encouragement is the way to build Ts up! โค๏ธ #EngageChat
A2: Because we let folks know the truth. They YOU are enough. The power is already within you. What's left is to give yourself permission and to act. To me this reassuring. #EngageChat
A1. It means to constantly maximize someoneโs strengths when they are trying to accomplish a task even when they donโt see it in themselves. Also not to let them give up during difficult situations, focus on the goal/end product they will achieve. #engagechat
A2: encouragement of taking risks, reaching outside of comfort zones while guiding, and use the small successes as leverage to help Ss confidence grow #engagechat

A2: Often, those who need encouragement are struggling with self-doubt or even low self esteem. Encouragement can help them to see their value and purpose and, hopefully, inspire them by renewing their passion. #engagechat
A2:
Encouragement builds self-confidence because itโs not about judgingโor even leading.
Itโs about empowering.
We can coach others with encouragement to reflect and question in order to find the answers that are already waiting inside.

A2-Who doesn't love knowing that someone is in their corner?Someone who is going to stick with them through the tough times and help them past the struggles and towards goals. Knowing you have that support and encouragement empowers people to take risks and grow! #engagechat
A2: If someone feels that you only have their best interest at heart and that you believe in them and their efforts, they will begin to believe the same. As long as you are honest in your feedback they will begin to trust and accept you words of encouragement. #EngageChat
A2: For someone who's already feeling dejected, deflated, lost, an encouraging word can really make a difference and turn things around and make that person feel hope soaring in his or her heart. Self-confidence is thus restored. #engagechat
A2 The key to building one's self confidence is to internalize the encouragement that has been given. The person receiving the encouragement is tasked to utilize the inspiration that has been given as a stepping stone for progress #engagechat

Peopleโs outer voices typically become our inner voices. When someone tells us they know we can and should push limits and do hard things, the narrative in our heads changes to say, heck yeah, I can and I will. Itโs science. #EngageChat

Self-confidence does not come from praise alone but also from constructive guidance & feedback. It strengthens when we overcome hurdles & push through challenges-when we grow & see how far we have come. Encouragement is the thread that binds our confidence tapestry #EngageChat
Tangible support whether emotional, physical presence or financial. People need more than kind words. They need tangible and sustaining support. #engagechat
A2: Also encouraging is not only confidence building for the receiver. It feels good to help someone believe in themselves. We realize that our words and actions have positive power. This is confidence building as well! #EngageChat

A2. By showing someone that they are not alone & have others that believe & support them. This support will allow them to take risks & fail if need be. Others will be there for them. #engagechat
A2: We all desire validation and connectedness #imo...saying to someone, "I believe in you or I believe in your idea" gives us the confidence to forge ahead...it's also a good indicator that we have sought feedback, which is helpful in gaining support for the idea! #EngageChat
A3: Supporting others into their own leadership positions (not fearing any sort of competition), giving others the opportunities to develop themselves professionally, allowing them autonomy to find the best version of themselves! #engagechat
A3: When they see something good, they acknowledge it. Something as small as a note goes such a long way. Encouraging leaders must be genuine and consistent. #EngageChat
A2 Dr Kia here late! I think encouragement is KEY to ANY interaction. We ALL need fk k ow that our efforts are recognized and we all appreciate the vote of confidence that goes for Ss, Ts, ALL of us. #engagechat
A3: An encouraging leader knows it's important to take time to listen, to empathise, to offer sincere words of hope to encourage the heart of others who are feeling disheartened. #engagechat
A2 Encouragement affirms. Encouragement creates trust. Encouragement supports. When we feel encouraged to try even if we fail, we build confidence to try again. #EngageChat
A3-They create space and devote time deliberately for purpose conversation. They seek to understand with genuine listening ears. They empathise. They are real. #engagechat

A3: Honesty and being present. Encouragement means little if the only time a person sees you is when you have encouraging words. Their must be some advice or some observation involved. Otherwise it seems like a tactic. #EngageChat

A3: handwritten notes, specific positive verbal feedback, handshakes, high-fives, hugs, recognizing the sacrifices made be others #engagechat@mrgodsiff
A3: Actions from an encouraging leader include reminders "things take time, you can't do it all at once, not everyone will agree, keep at it" #engagechat

Not only do they provide opportunities for growth, they also whisper alternatives unthought of. They stand along the natural path, cheering & also remove obstacles that may lead us astray. #EngageChat They take the time to understand how we think so they can gauge our needs.
A3. I think an encouraging leader is a TRANSPARENT one. When I see you are okay with trying again it makes ME OKAY with having to try again. Leaders who are open and gentle with themselves feel like a safe place for me too. #engagechat
A3: An encouraging leader provides positive feedback, is empathetic, is understanding when days don't go as planned, is there to listen, is open to new ideas, is supportive, believes in giving autonomy (& doesn't micromanage!), and is respectful & trustworthy. #engagechat
A3: Encouraging leaders spend time building a culture that is safe to take risks, where thereโs no fear of failure and mistakes are seen as hurdles to grow from. They identify strengths, and they push when they see a need to grow. They involve people in the future. #engagechat

Fostering an environment of risk taking is so vital in people growing and succeeding. Educators have to be risk takers. Students need to see Ts taking those risks. #engagechat

There is a circle of encouragement that expands as an encouraging leader puts himself equal with his community. When the purpose is amplified and the vision comes into a more focused field of view #engagechat an encouraging leader is the lens that draws our eye to the pixels
A4: Those GOTCHA moments. Criticism. They make people defensive and not open to growth. They stifle innovation. And they make folks inauthentic around you. #engagechat
A4-False praise and encouragement. Sugar coating things to the point where it builds a false sense of confidence. Not saying to tear people down...but you aren't helping by providing fake encouragement or praise #engagechat
A4 I won't camp out on this one BUT when a leader berates, belittles, shuts out, or micromanages that is the opposite of encouragement. No one can grow when they have to constantly watch their backs. #engagechat
Micromanaging, blaming, shaming... it makes Ts feel like they are walking on egg shells. When this happens, Ts arenโt able to focus on growth, but are simply trying to survive. #EngageChat
#amen I have seen TOO MUCH of this to such an extent that we put the wrong people in the wrong places in order to avoid difficult conversations...#engagechat

The best leaders are strength-based. Rather than focusing on whatโs โwrongโ, they know how to focus on and build up their team or communityโs strengths. #engagechat
A4: Micromanaging, focusing on the negative, not listening, dictating, being quick to judge, being unwilling to step outside the box - the effects include low morale, compliance behavior, and a constant fear of repercussions. #engagechat
A4:
Actions that discourage...
distrust
micromanagement
dishonoring agency
disrespect
lack of sincerity
failure to listen
seeking to control
The effects are a toxic environment that sucks the JOY out of learning and squashes creativity and growth.
#engagechat
A4 Without encouragement, paralysis can set in, leaving no room to grow or change. Encouragement fosters the need to move, even when paralyzed with self-doubt or other ways of entrenching one's self in a hole of fear. #engagechat

A4. When someone allows someone to struggle & fail on purpose without offering support. It causes people not to try or take risks. It also causes people to leave the organization. #engagechat
A4: Discouraging words and actions can come from people who are quick to blame others for failures and put them down. Those who are discouraged as a result will just switch off and give up and convince themselves their efforts are of no use. "Why bother to try again" #engagechat
A4: Micromanagement of those we trust to be professionals. Ts feel stifled and the Ss feel controlled. Both lose their voice and creativity. Trust those you hire, crystallize your vision, and let them fly...#engagechat
Couldn't have said it better myself. Last year, I worked with two "leaders" (I'm using that term very loosely here) that were the definition of this. I was not able to grow the way I have in all of my previous (and now present) experience! Very sad!! #engagechat
A4 I won't camp out on this one BUT when a leader berates, belittles, shuts out, or micromanages that is the opposite of encouragement. No one can grow when they have to constantly watch their backs. #engagechat
A4: Being an encourager doesnโt mean all โ๏ธ and ๐. Itโs important to acknowledge the present while pressing toward the possibility. The opposite-Focusing on present challenges and resistance to change, creates a toxic culture. #EngageChat
A3. 3 skills of an encouraging leader:
1. They shape the future, not just react to it.
2. intentional diversity in their personal/professional network.
3. Courageous enough to abandon a practices that made them successful in the past. #engagechat
Resistance to change...just because we have always done it this way doesn't mean we always should. Tough mindset to break in education which is chalk full of "traditions" #engagechat
A4: If you have to be the smartest in the room, you are the opposite of encouragement. Encouragement exists because we believe in the people around us and we can own our own vulnerabilities enough to want someone to be smarter, better, have a better solution. #engagechat
A4 #engagechat Encouragement is a forward momentum, bringing with it a sense of accomplishment and growth-to keep it on its trajectory there needs to be an upkeep of optimism and open-mindedness. An acknowledgment of set backs and bursts of accomplishment
A5: @gilmour_mike@ThirstyBeesNY@Dsoares_MiddHS@mr_hayes all helped me when I was a bit down a few weeks/months back. Now I'm back on track and will always be looking for ways to return the favor, if not to them specifically, to anyone that needs it. #engagechat
A5: @janetdnuzzie always knows when and how to encourage me. Sometimes itโs a thank you note via inter office mail or a checking in text. This has been super helpful during this years transition to a different campus. #EngageChat

When I wanted to quit teaching my first year- it was horrible, a day to day struggle. A veteran teacher said โslide down, get dirty, climb up- you may have dirt under your nails, but you will strengthen your grip everydayโ they stuck and here I am 16 years later #EngageChat
A5: I'm not sure I'd be in the teaching field without plenty of educators who've encouraged me along the way. We sometimes lose our perspective/confidence. It's important to surround ourselves w/ leaders who have great qualities as mentioned in this chat. #engagechat
