A1 Recess & breaks are SUPER important! Helps learners with focus, reducing stress, & provides physical activity to feed the brain.
RT
Q1 Are recess and breaks important components of a COL? Why?
Hello
I'm betting on the weather and staying up late to join the conversation.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Hope you have a fun-filled day!
Great!! Missing Morrish and teaching.
Hi there! A few minutes late! Abby from Northwest HS in Jackson, MI.
A1-I plan to double our recess time and expand play time in kinder, our kids need those breaks
A1: Recess is most important part of day: Need to use muscles to simulate/activate the mind ....
A1: Incredibly important. Movement keeps the mind working and fresh. Plus all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
A1: Recess helps Ss not only physically, but mentally. They will be able to focus better once they get the breaks that they need.
A1: all learners, kids & adults, need breaks and time to reenergize, reprioritize, and just refocus sometimes. Good for our minds.
A gambler! I'm so sleepy and hope you are right with your bet! https://t.co/INCibvCwWO
Hello
I'm betting on the weather and staying up late to join the conversation.
A1 talks about a period they call "renewal." Critical to step back, rest, and do some learning. Breaks are great.
A1: I'm a HS teacher, but I know that the brain needs a break and physical activity is good for the mind and body
A1: Students learn from play and choice: TOP themes of RECESS we need more of IT
A1 Recess absolutely essential to learning. We have research going as far back as 1885 that says so!
Everywhere we turn there's research and living evidence that "soft" time at school produces a lot personal & academic growth 4 all
A1 recess and breaks allow for balance in a school day. Wish there was more opportunity at the middle school level
A1 Recess and breaks reset the brain. It allows s to digest what they learn and build stamina.
A1: Our bodies do best when we are healthy. Recess and breaks = healthy!
A1: If the bum is numb, the brain’s the same. Get moving and get learning!
I'm giving everyone the 50/50.
A1 Interesting that almost everyone supports (more) recess. Yet, do our school schedules provide time for it?
Hi Rod! You are still speaking to me after your daughter went home sick?
Absolutely. COL is MUCH MORE than just academics. Everything is a piece to the puzzle. https://t.co/56uksbYrih
Q1 Are recess and breaks important components of a COL? Why?
I get to lead schools! It's going to be awesome https://t.co/pTM9tpIHf8
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Hope you have a fun-filled day!
A1 Movement Matters - Recess, Flexible Furnishings, Using the Building as A Classroom
A1: Yes, they support a COL b/c they are fun, active, and everyone needs breaks. Also time to eat. Food is important.
Exactly! Moderate- to vigorous-level physical activity feeds the brain w oxygen, water & glucose: brain food!
A1: If I need breaks, so do the Ss! We took a walk to see the sunrise and I had a room of focused learners a the rest of the hour.
Agree, Many middle schools are adding recess back now ..
There's also a lot of thinking/learning/reflecting that happens when we "get lost" in our thinking. Happens during breaks.
Once politically required contact time meets union contract time, recess often gets squashed, regardless of support
A1 Yes, breaks and recess are an essential component of a COL especially in kdg
A1 breaks and recess are CRITICAL to
A1 they are important! Recess allows students the opportunity to practice so many of the components of a COL
Research all the way back to 1885. WOW!
https://t.co/jdK3dvWCI7
A1 Recess absolutely essential to learning. We have research going as far back as 1885 that says so!
A:1 All benefit from engaging socially, movement, choice & recharging the battery. If it worked 4 DaVinci & Socrates, gotta be good
HS here too. Have you tried with your Ss? Mine were nonplussed. They'd rather mimic my poses. https://t.co/TqCXcbgmxo
A1: I'm a HS teacher, but I know that the brain needs a break and physical activity is good for the mind and body
A1: Without recess where will all the pent up energy go? misbehavior ..When good kids go bad
VERY TRUE! Have you read Creative Confidence?
Suzanne in Arkansas wishing our MS had recess or break time
But isn’t that also a problem for COL - being in school before sunrise? Sleep research and teenagers!!!
A1 Recess & breaks are important components of a culture of learning...even for grown ups!
A1. Brain and body breaks impact learners, are restorative.
A1: Even if they just "take a lap" around the classroom. Get the blood flowing
A1 We sometimes take a dance break in the middle of class. Gets them laughing and relaxing. Then we jump back into the hard stuff
Recess and passing time. How many of those few minutes do we spend harping on students to get to class?
Make an opportunity is always talking about getting MS kids moving.
A1: We as adults, need recess and down-time as well. Ss, Ts, & As should make time for lunch & exercise daily.
You have to be creative- brain breaks, quick toys, talking breaks
Agreed. I can't last much longer than 1-hr during PD before I need a brain break. Up and out I go. https://t.co/e1RJXYUok0
A1 Recess & breaks are important components of a culture of learning...even for grown ups!
and science says brains need blood to work!
A1: re-calibration & good ideas happen when we step away - like a hitter getting out of batters box in baseball once in a while
is the love. Definitely check it out
I'll add it to my list, haven't had the chance yet.
Yes! The brain needs a break. Research shows Ss more productive when efforts are distributed, rather than concentrated!
A1 Forgot the why...My students focus better after they have had a brain break or play time
Montessorians see Movement as one of the core tendencies of development, and thus critical to learning. It's integrated all day.
Awesome!
https://t.co/azBY09cgOg
A1 We sometimes take a dance break in the middle of class. Gets them laughing and relaxing. Then we jump back into the hard stuff
Has research supporting exactly what you're getting at with that tweet.
Grown ups need breaks, and we're good about making sure we take them. Kids need to have them, too :)
So excited about the topic 2nite!! And totally distracted by "the game" ;-)
Renee White from in Apex, NC
Wow, this game...this chat...on fire!
Yet Ss don't seem to get the downtime that Ts mandate for their own days.
This makes me wonder if Colorado has a chat. Most other states do. , are you there?
I think it's interesting that we think at a magical age an individual no longer needs a break.
Exactly. That's part of the reason why Ts should never withhold recess as punishment!
Q2 How do you create daily movement / brain breaks for your students?
A2 I play music in the lunchroom. Ss are invited to dance along. I also have random music breaks over the PA sometimes.
A1: Absolutely! It not only provides a break, it stimulates other neurological growth to allow diff synapses in brain to fire.
Who filmed me on my conference hour?
A1: I've personally observed higher student engagement for more minutes w breaks. Plowing straight through = less productivity
A2: Let students get up and move around during class. Work where they want.
as adults we walk to water cooler as students they outdoor opportunities to learn and explore
Q2 How do you create daily movement / brain breaks for your students?
I will be 47 years old in 2 months. I still need a break. https://t.co/psoup3wWCF
I think it's interesting that we think at a magical age an individual no longer needs a break.
Walking clubs...dance breaks...get up in move signals (whole building or by class).
None at all? Our ELEM Ss have very little. 15 min snack, 20 min lunch. Not enough time to eat and play too.
Can be hard to convince secondary teachers incorporating movement won't lead to loss of control, despite benefit to learning.
A2: Make it purposeful - out of seats to move - go to board, share with other pods, etc. If I don't plan it I forget.
I'm sure the laughing helps, too!
Must prove by doing it. Show them the money! https://t.co/SiCcNa2vEd
Can be hard to convince secondary teachers incorporating movement won't lead to loss of control, despite benefit to learning.
A1 recess is a rejuvenation of the mind - we have 20 minutes in our high school online Academy - it changes everything
As a HS T, I don't assign HW over weekends or breaks. Additionally, only 1-2 days per week. https://t.co/6FAHwqZgLB
Yet Ss don't seem to get the downtime that Ts mandate for their own days.
A2 Invest in a mindset that embraces micro/macro movement in our classrooms throughout the day - Celebrate the fidget/need to move
great point, Cindy; this is Tom from StPaulMN, retired T, now w Top20 Trng..
You are seriously not going to be 47. You look great.
A2-I am working with teacher teams to build this time into the school for all S and T needs
Even breaks in the classroom are necessary! K-5 = age + 1, 6-12 = age + 2 (minutes before requiring instructional transitions).
A2: Try my best to be facilitator, which means the Ss don't have to just sit there. During 2X blocks I get them up, try .
And that's it. So many adults afraid of not having enough control. Kids never learn to handle themselves bad cycle
we build them into the daily routine. Who says you need to sit at a desk as long as you're working
Breaks for all kids / learners!
https://t.co/I0oQs3Ob00
Even breaks in the classroom are necessary! K-5 = age + 1, 6-12 = age + 2 (minutes before requiring instructional transitions).
A:2 comes down to being intentional with planning, offering choice, & utilizing being open to a variety of movement ideas
A2 We love and Youtube videos that go along with our math and spelling pattern
A2: We have this VERY COOL PE4Life rm in our school that is equipped w/ exercise equip for 5-8 yr olds https://t.co/e3V6tCIN0C
Indeed! But everyone here seems to understand importance of recess. How do we reach the non-believers?
A2 yes, unstructured has to be part of structured plan Dave
A2: it has to be intentional design. A lot of orgs going to standing desks...wld u like that in classrooms?
Many Ts in my school are even trying alternative seating. has two tables for standing/working
A2: We use a lot! Fun & fast & Ss love it! Fun to have a S leader lead Simon says or "penguin jacks". They ❤️ to lead.
A2: Q we need to ask daily. Human charting/sorting to see data, In/out of groups, change activity with built in time for social
A2 Celebrate individual students/events like birthdays...of your children, Taylor from uncle D lol I'm out AJ :)
Our AP Takes kids outside at lunch when weather permits. Makes a big difference in how the afternoon goes.
A2 is a blast! I also like turning on music & get kids up & moving!
A2: I need to be more intentional here. We move around to do various activities, but as a HS teacher I have to try harder.
we often preach to the choir at . Have to take it back to your individual buildings.
Secondary: include dance and movement in ELA and SS lessons, science, etc. Lots of ways to translate concepts into movement
A1: Have you ever tried to sit and learn in a four hour curriculum meeting?
My daughter's class loves their standing desks and desk-cycles
A2 A cl'room with lots of room to move! Also, s need learning activities with various levels of movement.
A2 We sing and dance, use blocks, puzzles, and playdough to learn through play.
A2 not just a break..kids need to hydrate and eat to keep learning
movement doesn't mean loss of control. It means organized opportunity to let loose and be outside of box
A2 I incorporate subtle breaks by switching activities where they get supplies and rearrange seats. Motion, mental pause
Awareness is critical. I hope you connect with someone tonight to give more ideas.
https://t.co/aBomza8Otf
A2: I need to be more intentional here. We move around to do various activities, but as a HS teacher I have to try harder.
A2: Design your daily lessons into mini activities to keep Ss focused & engaged.
You know what they say about idle hands. Teach knitting to accompany direct instruction--> increase attention
I loved the playdough smell when I visited your room last week. ;)
Going to try out my wobble chair this week
The effect - connections will happen!
Throw in some brain breaks, Abby!
I have a colleague who does brain breaks. I do invite my students to dance often. No sense in dancing alone.
The 1.0 version of me would never allow food or drink - left that version a few years ago!
A2 Incorporating the outdoors for learning activities is awesome! When teaching gravity, we used the slide and swings.
You could try . You could get Ss to mirror your moves. Different clsrm "zones" req mvmnt.
great to hear Corbat our students don't all learn the same way and most can't just sit for 8 hrs
The Whip Nae Nae dance off was a huge hit in the lunchroom last week. I killed it!
every break can still be tied to learning, we sing math and spelling songs
Though it's only very important in certain contexts. hehehe :)
Q3 If your school was to increase the amount recess/breaks, what would you eliminate from the schedule? Why?
Right! It's actually the Ss who DON'T get to move who create chaos!
I bought it from Amazon, where they sell everything. Good investment.
Devil's tool? I can almost still hear my Grandma saying it.
Q3 If your school was to increase the amount recess/breaks, what would you eliminate from the schedule? Why?
A3: Eliminate or maybe just change---study hall. Not a lot ever gets done there
I know --easy way out
RT
Q3 If your school was to increase the amount recess/breaks, what would you eliminate from the schedule? Why?
Switched to standing desk this year too. Will never go back! More productive & more energized. https://t.co/KNi5o1DMss
luv the 1.0 reference, I did 40 yrs in classroom...versions 1.0, 2.0, 2.2, 4.0, etc
I feel like my firsties remember our concepts when we have a song too and they think we are just having fun!
I witnessed your sight word brain breaks!
my boss has one from there, it did not meet my needs when I tried it
Yes, it doesn't ever seem to get old, does it? There is also a bap or a dap move now. Pointy elbow stuff.
I've known Ts who used various yoga poses with their Ss and found positive results
A3 Wasted time from "bringing them in".
A3-I shortened the amount of time dedicated to reading, elem kids need time to process
A3: Don't say science and social studies.
biggest obstacle is our own minds about what others will say or lack of support in trying new things
A:3 not sure I would eliminate as much as I would look to integrate allow Ts to break away from programs
A3: What if advisory was a built in brain break. Offer choices in how to "rest" brains. Physical activities included.
A3 elim some of the instruction/lecture/info that cd be delivered thru tech more efficiently
A3: Could shorten class periods and still come out ahead in the end.
brain breaks are great! Our whole school uses & encourages bb. Keeping 1st gr Ss transitioning every 15-25min helps.
A3 Give a critical look to transitions, getting/returning supplies - are they seamless? Is time lost?
A3: Eliminating things is hard. We have to be smarter about planning cross-curricular activities, plus more efficient transitions
A3: Funny you should ask, we are going to tweak our mod block sched. It has to come from class time. Avoids early arrive/late leave
A3: have enough break time - just need better distribution/strategies. On block schedule still.
A3 Replace the "Quiet Game!" Let kids wiggle, talk, jump, & have fun!
combine curriculum and movement.
A3: Good question. Breaks in high school would vary with different subjects. It's hard to imagine a school day schedule change.
Well, you know, if we attempted authentic cross-curricular approaches we'd still get it all done in less time.
A3: Perhaps we could adjust our biweekly seminar time to provide a break of sorts.
Yes! They were learning and didn't even know it
check out and . Both about movement in the classroom and play.
A3 Would love to add an advisory into the ms schedule. That could be used for a multitude of things including break/ exercise/etc
Yes - at the HS level it should be incorporated into the learning environment. https://t.co/Sl6RaD3wgd
combine curriculum and movement.
Yes, that's the one! They were trying to explain it and they gave up on me. lol
YES! https://t.co/7AplcesptY
A3 Would love to add an advisory into the ms schedule. That could be used for a multitude of things including break/ exercise/etc
reading a book in class...Why not walk on treadmill?
Yes, the balance on one foot for longer than me and do an airplane pose type thing works wonders with seniors.
If our instruction incorporated choice, movement and reflection, would we have to structure more formal breaks?
A3 what I'd eliminate...would be extra time in the day trying to get Ss attention!
A3: It may benefit to have 2 short recesses each 20 min instead of 1 for 30. Only using 10 more min would be easy & beneficial!
Agreed! Would do great things for Ss! https://t.co/uDmxbVqlLi
A3 Would love to add an advisory into the ms schedule. That could be used for a multitude of things including break/ exercise/etc
A3: make it goal to get small group discussion everyday that blends class topic with individual ideas/experience
Deep thoughts by John B! https://t.co/vCdVq1AeRs
If our instruction incorporated choice, movement and reflection, would we have to structure more formal breaks?
A3 building it in via FLASH time
We have this at the MS level. We have "access" at both MS and HS. Lots of time to move.
A3 in Early Childhood we spend 30 minutes outside in morning and afternoon I would add another 20 minutes and adjust day accdly
That innovative furniture would be great, how do we get everyone on board https://t.co/QAdzDyRIqB
reading a book in class...Why not walk on treadmill?
This is a great question. https://t.co/myVYhsegej
If our instruction incorporated choice, movement and reflection, would we have to structure more formal breaks?
Another moment of clarity, again at .
A3: Would be great to eliminate all lectures. Students don't need sit and get any more. Collaborate!
A3 For secondary kiddos, transitions between classes can include music & staff & students dancing.
I think it's really important for S to have time to spend playing during those formal breaks https://t.co/7P2DLpOsA6
If our instruction incorporated choice, movement and reflection, would we have to structure more formal breaks?
A3 you wouldn't even have to completely abandon something, maybe strategically switch things around to allow for the break
Line dancing to the next class! https://t.co/XpQltwvGDv
A3 For secondary kiddos, transitions between classes can include music & staff & students dancing.
A3 Finland manages a 15-min recess after every 45 mins of instruction & have shorter such days than us! Also have art, music, PE.
I saw Big do a little dance at lunchtime last week.
Yes to an advisory period! There are ways to increase time on task in exchange for minutes lost in class. https://t.co/Fg09FiiqQU
A3: What if advisory was a built in brain break. Offer choices in how to "rest" brains. Physical activities included.
Q4 Even without movement breaks, Ss can only handle so much continuous content. How do you break up the learning?
My friend lives in Finland. She sends me pictures of her 11 yo son's schedule. It has a lot of breaks. https://t.co/nFeWKwszZk
A3 Finland manages a 15-min recess after every 45 mins of instruction & have shorter such days than us! Also have art, music, PE.
It's tricky. A Harlem Shake incident got a T suspended w/o pay once. Don't know all the deets, but it does give pause.
This.
https://t.co/mMzAUe3dIb
A3 Finland manages a 15-min recess after every 45 mins of instruction & have shorter such days than us! Also have art, music, PE.
A4: In science, we would take a break and watch/discuss a cool/fun science video
RT
Q4 Even without movement breaks, Ss can only handle so much continuous content. How do you break up the learning?
A3 Ss who are refreshed may be less distracted which means less reminders which equals more time to learn. It may all equal out.
Yes, I love this! I might try it out.
Students' learning should have different components to it. Switch modalities amap, for example
A4-I try to schedule a break after each long session of instruction, recess, lunch and specials help to provide breaks
Agree w/ experiential learning and cross-curricular STEM programming, when done correctly, should incorporate movement.
I love to dance with students during passing time. They laugh, and my stress level goes down. https://t.co/NILrpqoxBn
A3 For secondary kiddos, transitions between classes can include music & staff & students dancing.
A:4 intentional planning that includes inquiry, communication, problem solving, collaboration, self assessment, and reflection
BAM BAM - You know a great COL balances the rhythm to find the Flow:) https://t.co/L7LzPmekWj
Q4 Even without movement breaks, Ss can only handle so much continuous content. How do you break up the learning?
Ss ❤️ ! They are easily incorporated into lessons & can serve as a way to "break it down" too. 😜
A4 I find value in using strategies I learned in Adaptive Schools training with adults to get them moving, collaborating, learning.
I love the idea of not being quiet in the hall line. Why? When do we expect them to expel energy?
A4: In any given class my agenda holds multiple tasks that may require multiple movements around the room. Partnering, jigsaws, etc
Here. International school is different, but it made me stop dancing w/ music during transitions.
A4 Collaboration time! Give s time to turn and talk, process, digest, and ask questions about what they are learning.
I am sure that is my first BAM on a question 😂
A4: Compare findings at a neutral site, share info on the board, lots of Expo markers on the desks - take time to collaborate.
I still see value in lecture; just less & 15-min. chunks. Ss need context in order to creatively build. https://t.co/SSm2Jlw3g0
A3: Would be great to eliminate all lectures. Students don't need sit and get any more. Collaborate!
Wait! What? It's already 9:35 in ? What a fast-paced discussion!
A4 I love telling my students jokes and short stories about my life. They laugh n it becomes part of our classroom shared stories
A4 Easy way to break up learning is to build the relationships and just simply talk to Ss about their interests
A4: , collaborative GDocs, labs, 3D models, , S planning on white board. I don't talk *at* Ss much any more.
A4 Mini lessons and then time to discover and practice in Reading and Math workshop
A3 At Croslex Middle School we have recess for 5-8! Students work harder when they get a midday break!
Thank you for reminding me to be more intentional with breaks within lessons. Times up for this early bird. Goodnight
true...I meant more the 30-45 minute ones. I wouldn't call 5-10 minutes a lecture -more of a ...chat : ) https://t.co/mB5vs57qfx
I still see value in lecture; just less & 15-min. chunks. Ss need context in order to creatively build. https://t.co/SSm2Jlw3g0
A3: Would be great to eliminate all lectures. Students don't need sit and get any more. Collaborate!
Yes, grasshopper! You are a wise one! https://t.co/KPfJ0ZTYTR
A4 Easy way to break up learning is to build the relationships and just simply talk to Ss about their interests
Figure out how many Expo markers you think you need, then multiply it by 100!
Moderating a chat is like entering a future-oriented time machine, no?
A4: W 1st grade we do more small chunks of work time & mini lessons (lesson 5-8min, work time 15-25). Throwing in games helps too,
I love it. I do life lessons daily.
10 more minutes... I have all my resource tweets lined up from 9:40-9:50 :-)
Also, look to match content to time. Engaged Ss may be best served by more flexible starts and ends to "class periods."
HS seniors become like 3rd graders with Expos in their hands!
Transitions a GREAT way to "sneak" movement in!
Great time to build relationships!!
I become a 3rd grader with Expos in my hand lol.
I use student cues and will often stop in the middle of something and yell "squirrel!" The kids and I will look 4 it then return.
Great idea; flexible periods! https://t.co/k7Wi1lqvl6
Also, look to match content to time. Engaged Ss may be best served by more flexible starts and ends to "class periods."
OK. I'm hanging around a little more for tips and tools. (plus hubby busy w football game)
sometimes yes, sometimes not so much - depends on the day.
A4: Gradual Release of Responsibility model lends itself to smaller chunks of instruction. Daily 5 for lit/Daily 3 for math, too
Anyone go to a "sit and get" and find yourself having to stand? Imagine a student who has 6 hours of ''sit & get".
Gradual Release of Control
https://t.co/SfjVhC3iAA
A4: Gradual Release of Responsibility model lends itself to smaller chunks of instruction. Daily 5 for lit/Daily 3 for math, too
Q5 Resource share time: Please share resources on movement and brain breaks for Ss.
I love structures like these that allow students to choose and move instead of sit and get.
A4 Avoid sit & get lectures. Create a classroom that allows kids to work in learning communities.
A4: If good, make Ss laugh. If pro, laugh at self (makes Ss laugh). Hall of Fame = COL where Ss make all laugh at noone's expense
Choose and Move! https://t.co/O81dT8iJFA
I love structures like these that allow students to choose and move instead of sit and get.
Also with a flexible timetable - Period/hour 1 day 1 becomes period/hour 2 day 2 and so on.
A4 Hands on learning through centers and free play. In kdg free play is very important!
RT Q5 Resource share time: Please share resources on movement and brain breaks for Ss.
A5 I love for breaks. Fun for adults too!
Not even just BAM. It was a BAM BAM! Congrats! :)
I definitely do the breaks with the kids! They're so fun!
Yes! These models take time to refine & get up & running like well oiled machine but once do they are 👍🏽! https://t.co/mn1Up37YaE
A4: Gradual Release of Responsibility model lends itself to smaller chunks of instruction. Daily 5 for lit/Daily 3 for math, too
I wonder what this would look like at high school level? https://t.co/CF7OrYNbnq
Also with a flexible timetable - Period/hour 1 day 1 becomes period/hour 2 day 2 and so on.
A5 Social Worker and Guidance have been doing a lot of breathing / mindfulness breaks. Sitting still like a Frog is popular w/K4
I just read that article, very interesting!
That was exactly what I had when I taught HS - 4 day cycle.
A5: , , imagination, permission/forgiveness...

A5: https://t.co/PfzMnmeKWl has wonderful articles about the importance of play and the benefits of it over a lifetime.
We have a multipurpose room for gym/cafe. Considering having Ss eat in classrooms when there is indoor recess so gym can stay open.
A5b: inside recess brain games, circuits, play dough, kinetic sand, Legos, games, art supplies choice. Hard part is equity in rooms
A5 I feel very strongly that kids need "free play" time as well. Unstructured.
A5:Have jar for Ss to put their fav appropriate video/songs pick a song from the jar. Ss love hearing/seeing their fav song/video.
A5 I just signed my class up for Global School Play Day on February 3, can't wait!

Kids transport food when we've closed the gym for Santa's shop or our Senior luncheon. Risk worth taking?

I'd love to do something about indoor recess. We lack supervision. Bit Lord of the Flies as is.
Excellent! Research shows sitting increases fatigue & reduces concentration. No good reason to make Ss sit more!
