#dtk12chat Archive
Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.

Howdy ! I've got the usual 20 min til I need to go pick up my ballerina... Let's gab!
wonderful to have you here Nancy!
Tis the season of end of the year-ings in so many schools; tonight's chat is therefore a free-for-all re: design thinking in edu
Tonight is a fantastic opportunity to meet new folks, connect, ask Qs, catch up on ideas, hatch new ones on 9-10 EST
Doug from Oceanside Ca. Ready for a great chat. Had a great afternoon.
Random Q if u r out there, 1 of ur favorite Bowie songs?I say one of b/c my empathic senses tell me it's too hard to pick only 1
. I meant to say . . . what brings you this neck of the internet forests, Nancy (oy the hashtag fails tonight)
We're going to do a DT exercise next week w 7ths using our "caring schools initiative" data to prompt discovery/Q formation! :-D
. speak of the greatness that was your afternoon, Doug!
HI Trying to do two chats tonight! Been wanting to drop in!
Hello Christy! how goes all the things in the spaces where you have to manage & populate the spaces with things?
Howdy peeps! Looking 4 ideas: helping facilitate intro to DT for middle school Ss. What would you use for a d-challenge?
What's the other chat you are rocking tonight, Sue?
what's the long game you are hatching there, Linds?
Hi there! Currently working on designs & possible supply list for our LS Idea Lab space (DT+makerspace)
in CA looking forward to freestyle improv with community, sharing our enthusiasm for in .
Hi, fellow STEM teacher! Are you coming to the NSTA stem expo in Denver this summer?
I teach 6th science - that’s my regular W nite!
I love recommending my go-to: manila folder challenge; HMW bring joy to another w manila folder & 4 paper clips?
I was blessed to teach a robo-crafting lesson in replication of the .
Fun!! You could go whole-hog and have them ID pain points in their own school days, or another class's pain points.
I went to the one in NOLA 2 yrs ago. It was great!
Love that idea! Also ISO quick ways to intro DT to teachers..with say, 10 min at start of faculty mtg ;)
Bowie song? "Space Oddity" is a sad story about voyage of Major Tom. (and a better story-song is "Roads to Moscow")
we've had nasty sexism/racism/vulgarity issues w 7ths :-( Hoping to build leadership/agency among quiet majority
very cool! well thanks for joining us in ; we talk use of DT from the micro to the macro scale educhange here
love the approach; my crew is trying to design an empathy experience btw community & school fueled by lit
NORRRMS! I'm not here! i'm plugging in grades&planning a DT challenge based on our research clubs PBL
love it! Esp the writing boards/dividers. Have you seen z-rack, shower board dividers?
omg what was the context?? Gorgeous!!
I don't think I have...will totally look into them though!
joining late after a fun but long day at w/
good time for subversive DT: empathy, ideation, brainstorm, feedback tools & protocols w/o DT def'n

just some thoughts: everything on casters? Breakout spaces?
I'm a total fan girl! Let me know if I can help... blog series on
we are freestylin' tonight. No mod on the mic.
I love your profile picture!
oh-fabulous --so bird walking is okay? ;)
Hi Dan! I miss interacting with you!
Yes-everything on casters Thinking about HWM create breakout spaces w/in our space (one classroom)
NO wonder i am having trouble keeping up!
I wonder if I saw you today?!?
so very much the likewise, my friend!
Danny, thanks for the great day today! It was a lot of fun with a lot of interesting people
bird walk? where? AHS? Depeche Mode? Where are Robert Smith and Morrissey today?
I've been trying (ltd success) to use AV & utility carts as permeable dividers in my classroom
Yes! I need a reason to hang out in ME
Here's a random birdwalk Q. Which musician r u afraid will be the next victim of this curse of 2016?
You all are full of wonderful resources!
the cure are on tour, aren't they? (or was that a dream)
how about ER-style curtains to divide the space?
Yes...term is either a total turnoff or used w/out a real understanding of it
that wasn't an answer to Ellen's Q about next curse victim... Nonononononono
"That my head on a door was a dream?"
Just realized how morbid my q was. Anyway, a little worried when I heard Anthony Kiedis was hospitalized.
How about a milk jug makered wall?
I am super jealous. I like bethel. Unfortunately I will be in south korea on vacation ;)
Possiblility :) Was thinking of z-racks or some sort of moveable writing surfaces to act as divider
I've found it's hugely helpful for my introverts & my Ss w anxiety to have space w/n space
Gah gotta run! Glad to "see" you all for a sec. <3 <3 <3
like it ... or push all furniture in a corner and let the kids make the space
As someone who used to be one of those Ss, I totally agree
I've an idea for whiteboards that pull off the wall 2 make table space (thk drafting table on wheels)
A member of The Outfield or Sheriff.
I was doing that for a while & my Ss w OCD & anxiety really struggled w everyday chaos
Ooooh! That's such a great idea!
(like my other thought) what if Z-racks were the actual walls and could pull away and tilt?
interesting--with foldable legs? truly flexible
carrels are so inflexible (no other purpose); I find the flexible space w a few set formats tends to be working
Bob’s barricades - roads, need a foam school version of these! Shark tank, who’s in!
a T made an milk jug igloo for those kiddos needing "away" - my Ss work under desk, in nooks, etc.
. my friend says "casters are the new post-it notes"
decent ones, though. Some are crappy & fall apart :(
Now THAT is a great design challenge - invent a better caster!
beware the harbor freight my friends
Sometimes I wish I could also work under my desk--away from the chaos
have you seen the rolling whiteboard walls attached from ceiling
Yes! Was slightly obsessed with them while visiting them ;)
saw flipup whiteboardtables When flippedup, perfectwall-size whiteboards4little guys
Plastic instead of metal?
one my Ss built a sanctuary for her friend to use during class out of a big ol box
I also like the ones u can hang (& store elsewhere)
has those. A little fancier tho
agree, and how they attach to the furniture
that is awesome! Love me some empathy
I saw them if u want 2 connct w/them
these r still basic-white board & hook 2 hang
There is a store in ATL that sells casters and dollys! Walked past it a million times. Must ck out!
Interesting! Our white board tables r mammoths-nice but not flexible
Where? I live on the west side. is it near GT or downtown?
IDEO uses large foam boards- could be useful for multiple sections of Ss
I think it’s called Carlton’s .All those walks from Marta to GT!
look at you being all makery and stuff
I wonder if pre-placed hangers in ceiling wld allow hanging boards to make spaces
And duct tape makes it an accordion fold wall. Husband made a spraying booth for painting stuff.
that would be convenient--more so than z racks
z racks take up too much space in the bottom for small/crowded classrooms
Got to keep the finishes off of all his fancy tools! Ha!
Thanks for the chat tonight! See you next time!
