#2ndaryELA is a group of middle and high school English Language Arts teachers looking to share ideas and best practices. We chat every Tuesday night at 8 pm EST using #2ndaryELA. We'd love for you to join us!
A1: it is already hard enough for students to see view points outside of their own simply because of them being teenagers, so any chance to bring in different stories and experiences allows opp for growth and exposure sorely needed #2ndaryELA
A1: I also think that Ss appreciate knowing that they can experiment through stories in ways they are too afraid to explore in real life...so we must be careful with how we choose those stories #2ndaryELA
A2: the world “relevancy” is thrown around (sometimes too much), but finding aspects - like emotions, feelings, experiences the characters go through that are relevant to the students and highlighting these #2ndaryela#pstpln#edtechksu
A2: Essential questions provide a lens through which we can dive into experiences and connect them with our own. Also, supplemental texts and student-led discussions. I also like to bring in videos, art, etc. that reflect the same themes in diff ways #2ndaryELA
A3: In my college World Lit class, I fell in love with Purple Hibiscus by @AdichieSpeaks. I cannot speak highly enough of this novel. God Grew Tired of Us is also a really great eye-opening biography about one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. #2ndaryela#edtechksu#pstpln
A3: The Star-Touched Queen, The Hate You Give, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Crossover, Mexican Whiteboy, Cinder, They Both Die at the End (these are for high school) #2ndaryELA
A4 Steve Sheinkin is a favorite author of mine for NF. His narrative nonfiction sheds light on lesser known parts of history. There's also some great young reader's editions out there for books like Hidden Figures and The Other Wes Moore #2ndaryELA
A4: oops, jumped ahead in the last question. But, I think “God Grew Tired of Us” could be great in a secondary classroom. Also interested in recommendations. #2ndaryela#pstpln#edtechksu
A4: For NF, we typically look at articles or texts that are relevant but also current, so they have a tendency to change. And right now, I can only think of Night and Bad Boy #2ndaryELA
A5 This is an area I feel like I'm lacking in. I mostly read fiction and narrative nonfiction so my go to plays and poems are pretty traditional #2ndaryELA
A4: My mind is so off today (partially the Dodgers’ fault), but I use a book called Lindsey Lives that was actually published based on stories from local small town teenagers and their experiences. #2ndaryELA
