A1: The ownership, accountability and responsibility increases tremendously...people who feel that they are part of the process instead of it being "done" to them are more likely to put forth greater effort. #BmoreEdchat
A1: by including students in parent/teacher conferences, students are able to take intiative of their learning and set goals for future progress and success in the classroom! #BmoreEdChat
A1: Reflection is a life skill. Communication is a life skill. Student led conferences push students to evaluate their strengths and growth areas in order to communicate it to those who are helping them write their own life story. #BmoreEdchat
#BmoreEdchat A1: Without student input, whatever is implemented will become just another “thing” for the student(s) to do. It wouldn’t be their reality.
A1: I like having the students there. I then turn the conference around and have them describe what is going on in the classroom and what they've learned so far. #BMoreEdChat
A1: Including students in parent conferences creates opportunities for parents to gain an inside look at their student. it also allows students the chance to share their opinions of the class as well as the chance to show off their progress #BmoreEdchat
#BmoreEdchat A1: Without student input, whatever is implemented will become just another “thing” for the student(s) to do. It wouldn’t be their reality.
A1: This allows students to know how teachers perceive them...sometimes in my classroom, students think the teachers are out to get them, by including them it shows the students the teachers are only there to help them become better students and thrive #BmoreEdchat
A1: I believe that it is important to include students in the parent conference process so that students can show parents their successes and struggles and take responsibility for their learning! #bmoreedchat
Including students in the parent conference process gives students an extra sense of pride in their work. The shared process will also likely support the academic relationship between parents and their students! #BmoreEdchat

I have used a predetermined graphic organizer when can then be turned into a powerpoint or presentation with the students individual data and info #BmoreEdchat
A1: Time is always an obstacle. However, I would say mindsets of the student, teacher, and family are the largest obstacle. Sometimes we are resistant to change. Leaders must share the why behind incorporating student led conferences. #BmoreEdchat
A2. One challenge is getting students & teachers on the same page about protocol in terms of roles. I like going over rights and responsibilities in my classroom. A challenge could be the stakeholders knowing their rights and responsibilities in these conversations #BMoreEdChat
A2: Time is a big one, but even more availability of parents. Love the way @lhelton15 pre-planned for this by having community volunteers come in during the day to meet w/Ss whose parents couldn't make it. #BMoreEdChat
A2: By incorporating student led conferences, sometimes the parents might feel like they are missing out on one-on-one time to talk about their child with the teacher without him/her being present. #BmoreEdchat
A2: Making sure the student feels comfortable in the setting. Some students, like myself, would feel intimidated by this setting. Also making sure that students feel valued and validated by making sure positives are also mentioned during the conference #BmoreEdchat
A2: I love the idea of student led conferences and want to find a way to incorporate them. However I am not sure of the best way - my students are 4-5 years old and have a range of disabilities, many of which impact their communication. #BMoreEdChat
Last semester was our first time to try student led conferences. Our challenges were changing the mindset that the conference would be with the child's teacher, and having parents be able to take time off to attend.
#BMoreEdChat
A2: Incorporating student led conferences can cause a disconnect with the parent/teacher because there would not be that 1-1 time. Sometimes it is important for teacher/ parent to have convos about the successes/ struggles of the student without the student present. #BmoreEdchat
If a student struggles to meet standards and/or underperform, would this format for conferences help the student/parent? What scaffolding might be needed? #BmoreEdChat#NervousParent
A2: I think that one challenge in incorporating student led conferences would be finding time for parents, students and teachers to meet for a substatial period of time that allows the student to feel heard and share what they feel is necessary #BmoreEdchat
A2: students may feel intimidating during the meeting--having their parent/s and teacher discuss their behavior (good or bad) and goals for the semester which may lead to a heard conversation not an understood one. #BmoreEdchat
That's a great idea! We are working toward MSDE Accreditation for our classrooms, so we are already taking tons of pictures for documentation. I can create online portfolios and have students choose artifacts and create descriptions. #BMoreEdChat
A2: In my experience, very few parents choose to attend, and those who do are parents who are already pretty plugged in to their S’s experience. Some of this is definitely due to not understanding that the teacher will still be there/contribute. #BMoreEdChat
I agree! In many cases, there is such a limited amount of time during the year to meet with parents, that sometimes private time with parents during parent-teacher conferences feels like what is best for the student #BmoreEdchat
definitely a point that should be considered. I can see students sharing their own thoughts as to why they are struggling and being a part of the process for improvement. Definitely takes transparent communication and norms around purpose. #BmoreEdchat
We also experienced people not being able to take off work. I think in education, we have to be willing to offer a wider range of times/shift our work day to meet more parent’s needs. #BmoreEdchat

A3: I think the true question to ask is what is the purpose of the conference...is it to review information for our benefit or for our Ss to connect to their goals, reflect, and plan for the future? #BmoreEdchat
A3: student led conferences are beneficial to all involved -- giving students a chance to set goals and give feedback to what works for them in the classroom while the teacher can get feedback on his/her methods and their effectiveness as well! #BmoreEdchat
A3. I like framing support by grounding myself in the “why” of our work. We want students to advocate for themselves, express needs and celebrate victories. Getting everyone on board advances the goals behind our individual “why” which positively impacts children #BMoreEdChat
definitely need to roll out the protocol and purpose early for families. Maybe even back to school night to be proactive. Planning a community event at the same time also helps double dip and provide child care. #BmoreEdchat
A3: There are benefits and downfalls of student led conferences - just like anything. However, it is so important to be opened to letting your students have a sense of responsibility. #BmoreEdchat
A3 one thing we've done is run 2 sets of conferences a year. 1 student led and 1 more traditional teacher led. I think it helps address some of the issues like student's being intimidated or parents feeling they won't get to talk to teachers #BMoreEdChat
#BmoreEdchat All teachers have the same goal - to do what is best for each individual student... If i had a peer who was hesitant to support student-led conferences, I remind them that our main priority is our students and we have to make sure we are doing what is best for them
A3: Communicate the anticipated challenges throughout the process (shy student) and how to overcome them sharing Do’s/Dont’s (student generated ques. student generated responses. #BmoreEdChat
A3: By emphasizing the importance of personal reflection. Reflection is a crucial part of growing up...by giving students to the opportunity to reflect on their behavior in a safe setting allows students to grow academically but also interpersonally. #BmoreEdchat
A3: Student led conferences allow students to be heard! Students have the opportunity to set their own goals and showcase the progress they have made. Seeing what work student choose to showcase might give teachers and parents and insight into their learning style #bmoreedchat
A3: Start with the why and explain the resources and protocols which will make this event not only a success for students but for the staff. Student led conferences provide an opportunity to celebrate every single story of student growth. #BmoreEdchat
A3 provide time to plan for all involved-this is not something that can happen spur of the moment-students need time to identify their successes to celebrate and goals to work on #BmoreEdchat
I agree @empellegrino19, in the end, as teachers we need to do what is best for our students in order to meet each of their individual needs! #BmoreEdchat

A3: Show the value added. Whether that be via survey data, direct observation, or academic gains after several cycles of student led conferences. #BmoreEdChat
A3: I think the best way might be to approach them with the idea of building upon the idea of the student/parent/teacher team. If a member of the team isn't involved, the student is likely to experience difficulty. Every member of the team is important! #BmoreEdchat
A3: You could convince a peer or community member to support student led conferences by showing them videos of conferences that have gone well! Remind them that students should feel as though they are a very important part to help manage the learning process. #Bmoreedchat
I love this thought! The purpose for conferences should align so all stakeholders are on the same page. Framing this at the onset is vital. #BmoreEdChat
And teachers need time to assist students in recording goals and data, gathering enough meaningful materials for the conference, and time for the student to practice! After all, if they’re presenting, we want them to feel prepared and proud-no matter how young. #BmoreEdChat
Voice. Student voice means that we can come together as a team to support students around choices they made and choices we made as educators. Power also comes to mind when taking about the importance of student voice. There’s an accountability in voice and power.
Yes-we start discussing student led spring conferences during fall traditional conferences & including students in those traditional conferences-create a natural progression of the team #BmoreEdchat
Reflection seems to be a common thread, which is vital. Including students gives them time to reflect on their own actions & progress while empathizing in the role of the leader...ultimately facilitating the outcome of the meeting. #BmoreEdchat
Q1: Students are the focus of the conference, so the adults shouldn’t just talk ABOUT them—talk WITH them. Buy-in and accountability will exist when students are involved. #BmoreEdchat
