A1: I guess we have a few. We run bubble on the backside of our run plays to give the QB a third option. But a TRUE RPO? Not many. We’ll throw them in here or there. #hogfbchat
A1: We haven’t really implemented many in the past. 1-2 as we were learning. But would like to implement a few more. For us though upfront, we treat it like a run every time. Run is the first part of it after all! #hogfbchat
A1) Every play has the potential for an RPO. Backfield action can work in to a hand off, and WRs run routes for all but a few plays
Also have packaged calls for those that dont have RPO option depending on box
#hogfbchat
A1: Other than 2 back power (well, sometimes with 2 back power) all of our run schemes have some sort of RPO we can attach to it. Had decent success with one back power paired with stick or pop this season. #hogfbchat
A1: We tag most of our quick game routes for RPO's. Hitch, Speed Out, Slant, Bubble, Quicks, Seams. We pair them off zone and power blocking schemes. #hogfbchat
A1. Only had one in the offense I called last year. I have one tied to at least 3 Run plays and a few more presnap for when I get to call my offense. #hogfbchat
A1: We have about 5. Which is about the amount of runs we go into a game with. We are fairly new to the “RPO game” but what we have put in we are pretty good at. #hogfbchat
A1: We got to the point where we can RPO off every scheme we have. We were fortunate to have a QB that made very good choices in the read game. #hogfbchat
A1. 0 threw the ball less than 30 times all last season. Though it stood for run power often. Looks like I'll be reading more than i contribute in discussing this forward pass thing so many people fancy these days. #hogfbchat
A1: Have a Hitch or Fade or Seam Route with a Single Wr option on a series of Te Trips Runs away from the Te Trips on about all Runs.. Also just the Standard Now/quick screen to Wide Trips in the One Back Runs.. Yes the runs are Qb power or one back power #hogfbchat
A1: RPOs vary on who we are playing that week. If we can find a guy we can pick on outside the box we gameplan some RPOs into the weeks practice #hogfbchat
A1: we didn’t mess with it much in the Flexbone, when I was in the spread, we didn’t carry as many as most people, just tried to get very good at reading out a couple. Tag a concept off the IZ and bar series #hogfbchat
A1) They’re not a major part of the offense but we do have the ability within our system to tag screens and quick game to most of our run concepts #hogfbchat
A1: Depends on personnel, if QB is an extension of the coaching staff and you can count on him to make the right read 80% or better. All Run schemes can be tagged with an RPO if the QB is Proper #hogfbchat
A1. We basically have 3 RPO concepts for the WRS and we can call them no matter what run play is called ... Zone , Power , Counter , Bucksweep #hogfbchat
A1: Every run has an RPO attached to it
-In Spring we use bubbles/now screens
-As we progressed we began using quick game routes as well
-We also began using RPOs both frontside and backside of runs
-No set number of RPOs... question is vague... we can mix n match
#hogfbchat
A1: Pre-snap every play has the potential of run-pass based on the box and leverage. Our designed RPO packaged plays are all off of our inside zone to keep it easy for everybody! #hogfbchat
a1 #hogfbchat With us holding so close to Wing-T plays & principles we don't have much in the way of RPOs in our offensive scheme
Heathens right @CoachShiffman ?
A1: Almost every single of our run plays has an RPO attached to it. Looking to add some good ones for Y-counter & to pin and pull this year. We want to make LBs feel like they can never make the right play. #hogfbchat
A1: none were true RPOs. Our QB was a Soph and had to tell him to look for certain things. It really landed on us letting him be the athlete he was and run more than anything.#hogfbchat
That one can be lethal. Get good at it then you can rip the GO on the outside for the 3rd level read once the safety starts cheating on the stick. #hogfbchat
A1) Our offense started to run several at the end of the season. Our young QB read them well. Hoping to see more this year so we get better at defending them. #hogfbchat
A1: Our OC @AdamBooth1085 has introduced me to the world of RPO at Ankeny. I believe we run 3 of them: Quick Screen, Single WR, and Concept (multiple WR combos). #hogfbchat
With pin/pull we like to run #2 on an outside fade and #1 on a slant/rub underneath. Read OLB, inserts into run, ride and rip into the hole. Hesitates, give and live. #hogfbchat
With it being our quick game. There are no tags for our o line. The ball should be out of hands as soon as the quick read is made. No concern for downfield blocking #hogfbchat
A2) The way we structure it the OL simply executes the run call because anytime we tag a screen or quick game it’s all pre-snap so there’s no need to give them any special information other than the base run call #hogfbchat
A2: We just told them we were running the rock. Didn’t want to confuse them. So if we were using an IZ RPO, all they need to know is IZ and where the help is coming from. If we have an H back or not. Count stays the same. If he throws, he throws. #hogfbchat
A2: did it two different ways, we would either make a “lock” call on IZ to lock up backside DE, or we would just let them block the run. Really we just block the run, because the “lock” call would only effect 1 player, the BS tackle #hogfbchat
A2 We don't tell them crap about the RPO. The less they know the better. Ya'll just go block the run. We've been called for exactly zero illegal man downfield penalties in 3 years. #hogfbchat
A2. We call the run play with the word pass after it. We want the OL to be aware that there is a pass option, but they must sell the run first for us to get what we want. #hogfbchat
A2: typically we only signal the run concept to our hogs. If we are changing our read defender, we'll tag a lock call so our backside knows what to do #hogfbchat
A2. We dont. We can call any pass play we want. We signal to the OL and WR what they need to know. OL run, WR pass, QB job to make the right decision #hogfbchat
A2: Keep it Simple. They only need to listen to the run play. If the lineman get down field, so be it... That gets called so seldomly 6 or 7 run schemes, get good at them and let the skinny guys worry about the rest #hogfbchat
A2: Most tags talk to the backside tackle, we give a “Lock” call for him to stay on backside DE instead of climbing to LB and getting some unneeded penalties #hogfbchat
A2: Didn’t matter to us. We still blocked IZ/OZ. Got flagged once or twice for being downfield but we can live with that. Sometimes you get caught. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #hogfbchat
A2) OL doesn't know if an RPO or not. Because of the RPO possibility though, we will have backside tackle gap/hinge instead of climbing second level. Reason is DE is most likely to affect pass in our schemes. #hogfbchat
OL blocks the run. One important thing is to coach them in the 3 yard rule. If they are releasing to LB we tell them climb to 3 and post up if no defender fills. #hogfbchat
A2: We don't
-1 illegal man downfield this season
Just in general tell them not be in a hurry to chase LBs... get the first level doubled and moved as often as possible
#hogfbchat
#hogfbchat. Graig McElmuray Tekamah Nebraska. A1. We ran a lot with a senior in 2016 with a sophomore in 2017 we ran fewer. Like reading a linebacker for the run and the pass.
A2 - they never know when we are or aren’t running the ball. They only get the run play call. So essentially... run play then the WR’s get the pass concept. #hogfbchat
A2 #hogfbchat we simply add the route call to the original run call. So if we ran power bubble etc we would make the call that corresponds to that. Really doesn’t change anything up for our OL. It’s the rec that have to get the route tag
Our RPOs are all presnap reads, so we don’t have to tell our Big Boys anything. They hit quick! But we usually just add a tag to the end of the run play call. #hogfbchat
You already know! 4th round we had 38-148 and they had 38-158...we were just lucky enough to have a QB who could throw when we wanted. 11/18-240-3 TDS. He was the difference. #hogfbchat
You didn't ask me per se, but you can absolutely run it with 7th graders. If you can teach a kid the triple option, an RPO is often times even easier because it isn't as bang bang quick decision as a triple read. #hogfbchat
A2: We use one word tags for most but sometimes we call a quick passing game concept with inside zone and that tells our backside tackle to block the read or “lock it” #hogfbchat
All the oline knows is that is is a run play. They block first level defenders. For some reason if the kids on the line thinks it might be a pass they tend to stand up out of there stance. #hogfbchat
A2: We don’t tell our big boys anything they are running the run play and if we get called for a lineman down field then we get called for it K.I.S.S #hogfbchat
A2) As a defensive guy, I’d be surprised if many offenses tagged the RPO for the OL, given the fact they’re more than likely to be in the lap of the LBs when the ball comes out. #hogfbchat
Keep it simple!!!!! The OLINE doesn't need to know the RPO CALL. If run power to the right the call is East Patriot..... RPO is already built in but if I want another one I will say East Patriot Indy/ Grass ... All the need to know is East Patriot #hogfbchat
The line is none the wiser of it. Keep it simple for the big guys up front that way they execute on what they know instead of overthinking it. #hogfbchat
A2: No tags for the linemen. They follow our number system rules and are run blocking to keep it simple. We tag it for the skilled players with the route + "Read" at the end. When skilled players, most importantly the QB, hear read they know it's a RPO. #hogfbchat
If you’re running a post-snap RPO sometimes the OL has to slightly alter the blocking scheme. Like for example blocking man on in a zone scheme instead of zone blocking to ensure the BSDE is blocked & doesn’t have free release to QB #hogfbchat
A2: Call the run play then add route tag/read to it. Always want the run play executed correctly so QB can hand off if that is the read. #mtzmade#hogfbchat
A2. We don't tell them. We just tell them not to block the read. We called him the mullet. To me it was just a different way of running triple option. #hogfbchat
A1: We probably have about 12 but will only carry about 5 in a game with us. We like to have them for different looks in how they play their defense and take what they give us. #hogfbchat
A1: not a ton and would’ve liked to have done more. Year 1 with new system for the kids had some growing pains. Year 2 we should be able to accelerate #HogFbChat
A3)we use one word calls, they know the run block, but they also know it’s an RPO. I like them to know the entirety of the play. I fell it helps execution...they know to not take off. We also don’t use any “3rd level” RPOs so the ball is out quick #hogfbchat
You always have to teach your guys in the backfield that the RPO has to happen fast. If you use calls for your linemen to know it’s RPO, then they should know not to go downfield more than 3 yards. #hogfbchat
Nope, they should be engaged or working for a block by the time the ball is out if read is to pass. To get a high school official to make that call would just fire me up even more. #hogfbchat
A3: Not particularly, most of our pass concepts in our RPOs are either quick hitting or bubbles. It allows our guys to take out the skinny guys down field. #hogfbchat
A3) Not yet. But I fear the day when I am told by the NFHS that Ineligible Downfield is going to be a point of emphasis. I have no doubt it is coming. The pendulum has swung too far in the favor of RPO's. Then we will have to adjust like the good coaches we are. #hogfbchat
A2: We don’t tag theme. They get the run play signaled in by their position coach. Completely unaware of the pass concept it is paired with. #hogfbchat
A3: Nope. Not even a little for a few reasons. 1. Refs don't call it much unless the guys in headsets on the other side are throwing fits. 2. If they do call it, it's 5 yards so, ok, next play. 3. Our guys aren't fast enough to make it an issue anyway. #hogfbchat
A3) Again, ours are pre-snap but literally everyone I’ve ever heard talk about RPOs come out with some number of like only 1 penalty every 200 times they ran it lol #hogfbchat
A3) We only throw one 3rd level RPO, so the QB isn't holding the ball very long on our RPO's. So to answer your question, no we aren't, if we happen to get called downfield, that is part of the gamble. #hogfbchat
Q3 Yes, in Nebraska they call it. As much as I emphasize blocking to the whistle every play we have to...I was lucky to have several guys moving DL's & LB's 10yds downfield fairly often. #hogfbchat
A2: We give a generic RPO tag to the oline. They don't have any idea what the route/screen concept is. So we could run IZ (normal zone read) or IZ "Tag" and we'll lock on the backside #hogfbchat
A3: Not really, unless it happens consistently in a game. Also some concepts tend to cause more issues than others with lineman down field. #mtzmade#hogfbchat
A3: If executed correctly ball should be out. Tell them to not worry about what’s happening behind, just focus on your job, and trust your teammates. #hogfbchat
A3) Not worried about them being downfield, I am worried that the QB who loves to throw the ball will throw it instead of handing it off when that’s his read. I’m notorious for saying, “It was there if he hands it off!” Not @jaywilkinson favorite part about me lol #hogfbchat
A3: #hogfbchat we coach our guys up on the expanded neutral zone. Their basic rule is stay in front of the umpire. I also ask the white hat and umpire in pregame meeting to define the expanded neutral zone.
A3: We were at first and the answer RPO guys gave us was to have the RB give a “stay” call to the line as he had the ball pulled from him. That was a mess so we decided to just let the big boys block run 100% and worry about it only if we got called. #hogfbchat
A3: Nah. If we did RPOs I wouldn’t anyway. We had two downfield penalties and we don’t even run them. Guys just dominating their block downfield 🤷🏻♂ #hogfbchat
A2: We have base rules for our OL in our offense and tags to make adjustments with our RPOs or changes in our scheme. We have used things like cities, states, colors, or other code words as well. #hogfbchat
A3: Never been flagged even after the opposing team complained about it .. the ball gets out quick the refs are trying to recover and get back in position lol #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat#6manfbchat Nothing but respect for you guys working on your craft on a January Monday night. Your players should play extra hard for you, knowing you care this much about them.
A3 Part 2: Nothing really drill wise to work on keeping them from being downfield. But one of our biggest coaching points in all of our stuff is block the first level first. #hogfbchat
A3) we always told our QB to feed the beast on his reads let the running back make the OL right until you get a good read on the second level player. #hogfbchat
A3) We make a point of having our Head man mention it in the pregame officials meeting. Most crews are too worried about knee pads & back flaps being covered to notice the OL running the 7 yd stick route... #hogfbchat
We work double team drills and come off late to LB. Move man to the LB, have your fight in a phone booth. I think this help prevent guys from climbing to quickly to second level. #hogfbchat
A3: part two, if we are utilizing the lock call we just work a drill with tackles similar to a pick and hinge drill for the backside of power or counter, emphasis on not getting beat across your face #hogfbchat
A3 part 2: I’ve always emphasized taking care of the first level before we even think of the second level. Running backs path should bring the backers to us anyway. #hogfbchat
A3: No extra teaching, OL is already difficult enough. At the HS level we want our guys to be aggressive. Not worrying about an RPO being thrown. #hogfbchat
A3) We make a point of having our Head man mention it in the pregame officials meeting. Most crews are too worried about knee pads & back flaps being covered to notice the OL running the 7 yd stick route... #hogfbchat
A3 part 2 I guess: Honestly, we don't even talk about it. Big guys are too busy taking care of down guys up to the linebackers. The only thing we really say is let the LB fall into your lap but that's more for double team's success than it is for anything RPO related #hogfbchat
A2 most are off quicks so to be honest I don’t coach the guys on slowing down or being patient, we run a few with draw action and on that one we use normal coaching cues. #hogfbchat
A4: Counter with guard and tackle pulling with a shallow cross by the number 2 or 3 receiver. Get to see the hogs pull and suckers the backers up. #hogfbchat
A4: Zone with a "lock" call for backside. Always causes backside tackle to lock on DE and tells backside Guard to lock if he has a 3 tech. Power works well too. #hogfbchat
A4: only using IZ right now. Would love to use power or something with pulling guys. Think that would disrupt backer reads enough to make QB reads easier... #hogfbchat
A4: All of them. It lets our offense be creative in what we throw at defenses. It makes it fun for the kids to have a fast paced offense where anyone and everyone can and will be capable of making a big play. #hogfbchat
A4) We are a trap team, make no bones about it, so the RPO is huge for us and often ends up in a big play or TD, especially when using the TE. #hogfbchat
A4: Zone. We try to keep everything looking the same. Maybe we will run Zone Solid if we want to attack downfield. But everything is quick for us, so we block as is. Any Zone or Jet has an option. #hogfbchat
A4: really depends on the type of team and defense you're playing as well as if your QB is a runner or not. I love counter and IZ. Both with QB read. 3 options on one play is tough for a defense. #hogfbchat
A4: power & buck sweep! These two plays complement each other in the run game already and adding rpo’s to hold defenders in place make these two run schemes deadly! #hogfbchat
A4) Guard or Tackle Iso. I am working on writing an article on how we do it. Nothing groundbreaking, but very effective. In my opinion it gives us better angles than Inside Zone without a running QB. #hogfbchat
A4: Inside Zone. It's easier to conceptualize the difference between Zone Read and RPO. Simply change the read from the DE to the LB. Also, easier to run out of multiple personnel groupings and can play faster. Tempo, tempo, tempo #hogfbchat
A4) I’d have to say zone because it allows you to protect the QB from C gap to C gap by utilizing an H back or TE or block BSDE in lock scheme. Anytime you pull you leave two backside gaps in danger and the BST can only cover one of them if they’re both threatened #hogfbchat
A4: Zone is the easiest IMO. Base block BSE to eliminate immediate pressure. We’ll also run it off Counter-Trey concepts. All that movement with RBs and flying WRs across the formation along with two linemen pulling really confuses the defenders eyes. #hogfbchat
A4: I realize this is the boring answer but I think inside zone is easiest run play to tag an RPO on. So much you can do with it. For all you Run Power Often guys out there. We are looking at running a snag on the front side of power read. #hogfbchat
A4: Inside Zone was our main scheme with different variations off of that scheme. Doing research on other schemes and how it fits in what we want to do with our RPOs. #hogfbchat
Btw to all my #hogfbchat coaches: I love being apart of this and ending my Monday with this great chat. But I wanted to share I started today with y'all! #hogfbchat#future
A4: our zone schemes.theyre great because they can be used in any personnel
-inside zone is great because of all the tags you can use
-OZ is great because of the faster
flow it creates
#hogfbchat
A4: Pin & pull with a pop pass to a slot or TE on the backside. Keeps the backside 2nd level defender frozen, can’t run down hill and through a gap your puller may have created. #hogfbchat
A4: usually run stretch for any RPO. Then let our QB handoff or let him improvise. When the run stretch plays happen, I’m disappointed. When the Qb gets a chance to run... #hogfbchat
We tag plays with a name that alerts everyone that an rpo is possible. We run a jet with a backside comeback option. Qb's presnap read let's him get the ball out quickly enough to avoid having linemen downfield.
#hogfbchat
A4: power gives teams a good amount of fuss if their LBs are reading guards. Sets up that backside stick concept well if the will is getting greedy #hogfbchat
RPO’s fit them all. Each concept gives you the ability to manipulate defenders with RPO’s. Love 3rd level reads off power, and 2nd level reads off IS and OS Zone. #hogfbchat
Btw to all my #hogfbchat coaches: I love being apart of this and ending my Monday with this great chat. But I wanted to share I started today with y'all! #hogfbchat#future
I’ll also say this.... my main go to is to run the ball. If an RPO is there and the QB throws it, my OL didn’t do their job of reestablishing the LOS. #hogfbchat
Q4: We pre snap RPO every play except jet sweep. Favorite is one that puts the OLB or SS in a bind, or whoever their best player is. Run play doesn’t matter.
A4) Against us, IZ with the OL running tracks was the most effective. I really like the Gap Scheme RPOs that @BallCoachJoeMo ran @PennStateFball personally. #hogfbchat
Would love to see some #hogfbchat guys at the Southeast Football Coaches Clinic in Dry Ridge, Kentucky. Myself and @CoachRmcD60 will be talking OL play. Also get to hear some great speakers and coaches like @JustinYClark and @slade248 contact the last two to register!!!!
We’d like to thank our official sponsor GameStrat! They provide teams with the most reliable and advanced sideline replay system. Check them out https://t.co/zXhCj3fYlu#hogfbchat
A2 We dont have a tag for out OL. Routes are automatic. Always a run play for our guus up front.

I've been your cohost Tony Shiffman. Thank you all for making our Mondays the best Monday of the week! See you all next week at the same bat time and same bat channel. Monday at 8pm CST for the newest #hogfbchat
A4: Trap. Depending on tendencies we’ll read the frontside and have the RB bend it back to the trap block or backside with the back crossing QBs face. We love it against even fronts and all the “old coaches” love that we run a boat load of trap. #hogfbchat
Lincoln Riley dials up a simple RPO to get the ball on the edge.
Mayfield reading the OLB here. OLB squeezes down on the run giving Baker a throw read. Dump it in the flat before the safety can roll down and cover. High % throw to space are always great.

HSSocialMedia : RT CoachShiffman: Don't forget to mark your calendars for March 10th at RhodesFootball for the second annual #hogfbchat offensive line clinic! We are excited to see you all there!
What we call power... it’s different than your normal power but we love it! Presnap check numbers. If we get 3 over 2, we are looking bubble right away. Read backside DE for run and #3 cover guy for post snap.#hogfbchat
A1: we teach roughly 4 run blocking schemes that we will attach an RPO to. Sometimes we add a wrinkle scheme late in the season to force teams to adjust their run game rules... we had lightning in a bottle at RB recently, so if they miss a gap he’s gone! #hogfbchat
A3: Not really. Its kind of rare to get those calls for the most part if you’re engaged with a defender, at least from what I’ve seen. If we get one, then we may talk about being more cautious. #hogfbchat
A3- heck no! Make them call it. And then make them call it again! Only been flagged 1 time when it was iffy. A few times the qb held on to the ball and extended play and threw bubble screen late but within the rhythm of the play it’s only happened once. #hogfbchat
