Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Welcome to tonight’s #dtk12chat where we’ll be sharing our stories of how design and #designthinking have affected our lives. Let's see how many folks we have with us: to get us started, please share your name, location, and how long you’ve been involved in any way with DT
It feels like forever since I was able to be part of a Wednesday night chat! Happy to say that my schedule is changing soon and my Wednesdays will be available for #dtk12chat again soon. :)
Welcome to tonight’s #dtk12chat where we’ll be sharing our stories of how design and #designthinking have affected our lives. Let's see how many folks we have with us: to get us started, please share your name, location, and how long you’ve been involved in any way with DT
Asad Bandeali from Los Angeles. I got introduced to DT when I started my fellowship with @ExpInstitute in 2016. I started practicing more while working @dTechHS. #dtk12chat
Moving to Timor-Leste April 1st and it's 14 hours ahead so I'm not sure when I'll be able to join my next #dtk12chat but I've loved this community and all the resources y'all share and inspire others to try.
A1 #dtk12chat
Gary from abt 20 miles NW of Philadelphia. I started with design in 2004, read A Whole New Mind in 2006, dove deep for a year, and been DT ever since. https://t.co/K7zFcvlhfl
Sooo many amazing resources out there!!! Super into @jakek book Sprint & @AJSmartUX Lightning Design Jam protocol right now thanks to @timidstone#dtk12chat

Alright everyone, whether you’re an expert edu-designer or just curious about what DT can do in education, you’ve proven it’s at least changed your Wednesday evening b/c you’re here! #dtk12chat
So many people! So good to see! Let’s get to the discussion questions. Please remember to answer “Q1” with “A1” (and so on) and to use our #dtk12chat hashtag so we can keep the community conversation going.
Honored to join the fun tonight! Our founder and CEO, @AshleyLambS , has embraced DT & is building the capacity of educators in her district with DT through her School Startup. #dtk12chat
OMG, I'm doing the same thing. I Arrive April 3rd in the afternoon and start the next day. What's the home difference from where you were living? #dtk12chat
A1: Hmm, I think it was a teacher colleague who introduced me to it a few years ago. Saw lots of bad versions of it over years. Finally went to Nueva last year to dig deeper into concepts #dtk12chat
I first heard about it a couple years ago formally. I realized I had been doing some form of it for years. Went to a Stanford training for Ts and have been hooked ever since. #dtk12chat
A1: My PLN on the Twitterverse introduced me to #dtk12chat about a year ago I think it was @mr_isaacs and @lndeutsch (hope I'm not forgetting someone). It's very hard to follow from Israel. Is there a slow chat?
A1: My friend & colleague Melissa Mizel was doing incredible work in her classroom from her learning at the dschool. She’s now a leader at dtech #dtk12chat
A1: I first heard of design thinking from @GrantLichtman 's work with my school @mvschool but didn't really get my feet wet until I attended @MVPSchool 's FUSE in the summer of 2014. @scitechyEDU was my first guide! #dtk12chat
It's official, I'll be joining @CatalpaDev April 1st as their Lead Education Technologist. The project is funded by the Australian Govt’s @dfat_iXc & seeks to develop & implement a mobile app that supports teachers in Timor-Leste! #EthicalCS#dtk12chat#CSforAll
A1 at a #GAFE conference a few years ago some colleagues and I went to a session from @martinmoran21 on how he incorporated the framework into his teaching practice. This brought me down the amazing rabbit hole to the dschool and deepDT #dtk12chat
I am new to DT, though I've been an art teacher (6 years) and artist (lots longer!) for a while. Been learning more and more about Makerspaces in the past year and now am leading an effort to design/launch one in the new middle school my district is building. #DTK12chat
Yeah, #dtk12chat can be pretty fast and crazy! There are always transcripts of chats available later at https://t.co/N4Igwg5uu4 and this amazing community is here 24/7 :)
I keep thinking about a comment my friend in mainland China made about framing problems to solve without "disrespecting elders" etc... DT needs to be culturally responsive to be globally effective! So excited to see what @lndeutsch develops in that department #dtk12chat

it is amazing! need to make it look more like google on the inside & in the culture. So many HMWs. I wish you could all be here with me. It’ like a blank slate in a beautiful space. We could so shake it up and make it amazing! #dtk12chat
Cultural Intelligence is a principle we focus on in our district. DT is a good avenue to raise awareness, like in your “disrespecting elders” example #dtk12chat

Q2 the first time I experienced #designthinking hands on (other than just reading about it) was when I participated in the dschool rethink the wallet workshop... got to be both the designer and user #dtk12chat
A2: Our homerooms did a school-wide rollercoaster/amusement park DT challenge. I was new to the school so it was interesting & it took me a while to understand the process & purpose. #dtk12chat
A2: I'm in an educators entrepreneurs course organized by the @edu_il (Ministry of Education Israel). They use a lot of methods in our meetings. #dtk12chat
A2 first DT exp was totally immersive exp where we tackled “HMW reduce waste on campus?” What I love about that challenge is it’s low stakes and something we can all get behind. Then we were able to get to the juicy stuff #dtk12chat
A2: It was definitely at FUSE @MVPSchool - @scitechyEDU and crew were led a bunch of us newbies through being a designer. The user-centric, human-context-empathy attitude totally blew my mind. Def out of my comfort zone at the time. #dtk12chat

Yes please! Only here 2 days and my head is bursting with ideas, Qs, etc that I want to share with everyone! I think it could be great learning experience for all of us. #dtk12chat

A2a and the feelings, oh all the feelings! Interviewing students, faculty, staff, grounds, custodial, etc. Incredible! Never had I looked at one question through so many different lenses! #dtk12chat
A2 had Ss engage in DT to redesign/create the ideal art room. Made presentations to admins. Got into mini-design firms based on skill sets, not friends. Came up w/model, presentation, budget. Happy to say we are in process of making Ss dreams a reality. #dtk12chat
A2 during the @stanforddschool crash course for educators. I was user and designer. The interview process was a rush. “Dude I have no brakes.” #dtk12chat
In my training in Dallas with https://t.co/CLu7AY3PA3 we had to redesign the new city experience. Out on the streets interviewing strangers! It was awesome. #dtk12chat
When I was a transportation planner (b4 teaching) working with communities to incorporate bike paths. We were both designers and users;-) Collaboration before it was buzzy! #DTK12chat
A1 in 2008(?) I was looking for something to do and stumbled into DT and the @dschool. @scitechyEDU was In the other studio/group.We reconnected on twitter via #dtk12. Then we started #dtk12chat ...
All of the above! There were times where I was overwhelmed and couldn’t make sense. And other times where I was so inspired. Getting feedback from students, faculty and staff was HUGE too #dtk12chat
@scitechyEDU did the same thing to us! 45 mins into our first lesson, she was like "There's a shopping center up the road this way and a library that way, go interview a bunch of strangers about how they learn. It was intimidating! Luckily, the south is pretty friendly #dtk12chat
We had school safety as a topic. One part was bike safety and another was property theft during move-in move-out days. #dtk12chat I still have all of the booklets.
Q3: Have you noticed a change in how you approach the world / other people because of something you learned from design thinking? What was the change and how did you make it happen? #dtk12chat
Q3: Have you noticed a change in how you approach the world / other people because of something you learned from design thinking? What was the change and how did you make it happen? #dtk12chat
A3 one of the biggest take aways for me was to more thoughtful with my own children about their problems and helping them identify areas to problem solve, not fixing or solving things for them #dtk12chat
A3 I made a huge pivot when I started approaching problems from a "How might we . . .?" frame instead of "do" or "can" -- it really opened me to possibilities even more than playing #whatif? #dtk12chat
Q3: Have you noticed a change in how you approach the world / other people because of something you learned from design thinking? What was the change and how did you make it happen? #dtk12chat
A3: A big part of my job - and not my fave, honestly - ends up being tech support. I've learned through DT to focus on my users' needs, not my own. Flipped the whole feeling of it for me. #dtk12chat
I thought the dschool model was a great start & knew I could tweak Ito reflect more inclusive ways of knowing and my research. I created my circular model-with additions like bio-micry,circular, reflection, world views and bias, systems thinking #journals#dtk12chat
My close reading skills as English major found a better home in Material Culture studies. From there, I started studies of the built environment. That led to rhetorical analysis of all manmade objects. favorite? The Starbucks mini-cupcake box circa 2009-10 #dtk12chat
A3 When I work on teams, when I sit with students, I'm so careful to correct myself if I say "what could you do" or "should we do?" I stop. Say, "No . . what MIGHT you do? What MIGHT we do?" and reframe it. Very deliberate & open about it. #dtk12chat#itsokaytocorrectyerself
Q3: Have you noticed a change in how you approach the world / other people because of something you learned from design thinking? What was the change and how did you make it happen? #dtk12chat
YES! I think schools are full of busy people who want to take care of problems / challenges as quickly as possible and move on. Prob why there's so much power and potential in using DT in edu. #dtk12chat
A3 Also: the #designthinking mindset -- once I adopted it as a lens through which I do all of my work in schools? Shifting to a place where we learn in the service of solving problems for others? All felt good in the world #edchat#dtk12chat
A3: I've noticed a huge change in how I view the world and really trying to show compassion for others. Even more powerful has been building a foundation of empathy in my students. It's no longer about me, but about we. #dtk12chat
Right! That’s the best! When colleagues start to drink the Kool-aid. I still get excited when I hear someone at work say “how might we” or “yes, and” or “tell me more about that” #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat here is the project development timeline mapped with DT methods... for a senior exhibition T2; it’s worked when you don’t force Ss to use and they do anyway!
A4: Trust the process. It's perfectly normal to not have an end goal and lots of ambiguity, but in the end, the results speak for themselves. #dtk12chat
A3: I've noticed a huge change in how I view the world and really trying to show compassion for others. Even more powerful has been building a foundation of empathy in my students. It's no longer about me, but about we. #dtk12chat
A4 you have to be invested in people - starting from that acceptance to experience learning from and for someone else/something outside of yourself. Adapting to this builds gratitude as we build to solve #dtk12chat
A4: DT can really help with change management... not everyone is an “innovator” or acts fast yet DT gives everyone a voice and produces initiatives designed with not FOR others they have a stake in seeing successful. #dtk12chat
A3: #DesignThinking made me more curious. It helped me solidify my own epistemology. We are all connected in our journey to become fully human. Be curious. Explore the wild things. Be respond-sible with all of your senses. Find the integrity--the connections #dtk12chat
A4 your work does not need to be perfect to put it into universe. Learned that the first prototype I received feedback on and how feedback was explained as a gift. So now I’m not as afraid to do first and figure out later. #dtk12chat
I've thought about more perspective taking in the DT process, considering dynamics of contribution & just studying how to include more contributions from more collaborators #dtk12chat
A4a #dtk12chat That given support, guidance, and permission to act as agents of their learning, students will amaze us. I learned it most through the IDSA Design Learning Challenge my 8th graders won in 2012-13 https://t.co/33lNC0Da7p
This is so a #dtk12chat I'm going to have to go back and read the transcript of. You all are too amazing. If you're in the same boat, remember transcripts are always available at https://t.co/N4Igwg5uu4#thankyou
A4 From #designthinking I've learned to put the user at the center; that no matter how much you may LOVE an idea or a solution, if it doesn't meet the needs ... ? AND that when you practice empathy regularly, you find you can trust your instincts so much more #dtk12chat
Love tonight's #dtk12chat! A3/4—biggest changes and learnings from DT...to trust that barriers will fall away between people as we/they share their observations, ideas....
#BOOMSHAKALAKA for pure truth right here. Listen with intent to use that understanding in the service of meeting a need, solving a problem, resolving a conflict. #dtk12chat
A4 it’s OK to fail, failing is good, we learn and grow from failure. Trying new ideas that might not work is ok. Iterating on those ideas or just totally letting them go, also ok. #dtk12chat
Q5: OK, getting to the heart of the matter: why do you practice design thinking yourself and why do you share it with your students? #dtk12chat#weonlygottoQ5
A4: I appreciate the sense of belonging designers develop when working through a DT process together, especially in the classroom. Creating catalyst identities! #dtk12chat
This is HUGE. @CDMdreamers does a fabulous job of helping young students understand this. Supports social-emotional learning development also #dtk12chat
A5: DT builds culture of community problem solving; using our minds and actions to make the world a better place for others is one of the most valuable lessons I could teach ss of any age #dtk12chat
A4b #dtk12chat also learned that there's more to learning than just thinking. "thinking, doing, being" is a mantra I use with my DT Ss. And DT is a Liberal Art--read that in Richard Buchanan's "Wicked Problems in Design Thinking."
I'll either write a blog post or do a video with one of the boxes. I used to use them with my 8th graders to talk about design at the level of pragmatism/utility and design to create an experience. (I walked into a Sbucks and asked for 30 boxes for a project. No problem.
A5: I keep practicing design thinking for the same reason I do improv and yoga: it makes me a better human. I hope it does the same for the students and colleagues I share it with. #heartopen#dtk12chat
We are not on this Earth to serve ourselves and what better way to set up our students for success and genuine fulfillment in life than by solving real issues with compassion. #dtk12chat
Q5: OK, getting to the heart of the matter: why do you practice design thinking yourself and why do you share it with your students? #dtk12chat#weonlygottoQ5
A5 all about getting Ss to dig deeper and take action on something they truly care about. The iterative process encourages epic fails and our kiddos need to practice this shift in emotional gears as they learn #dtk12chat
A5: The focus on human values. Honoring the insight & expertise in each other. DT elevates respect & change agents to meet authentic needs in communities #dtk12chat
A5 it is a process that can be applied to various aspects of life. It is simple enough for anyone to use but it creates complexity also. I love the idea of building empathy and building Empathy takes time. So it can cause you to slow down and be in the moment #dtk12chat
