Hello everyone! Welcome to #espechat. I’m Jimmy and I will be your moderator for tonight’s chat. Who all do we have joining us? Tell us your name, the city you teach in, and share a GIF on how you feel about integrating health content with movement.
Eric Turrill from Round Hill, VA ready to learn from one of the Health Integration leaders. Let’s go, Jimmy. Represent Virginia my brother. @ILESPhysEd#ESPEchat
Tonight we will be talking “Integrating Health Content with Movement”. We will use the Q/A method (Q1…A1). Don’t forget to use #espechat in each of your responses.
MyPlate Nutrition Monopoly by @ILESPhysEd Turned the gym into 1 huge board game. 26 hula hoops w (a dice, a nutrition food card on a cone & an exercise card on the wall) at each HH. Attached directions inserted into dry erase reusable pockets. Directions below. #Physed@MyPlate
A1) I teach the muscles/bones a little, not as much as I would like. One activity we do is “Capture the Cone” where Ss touch muscles/bones that I call out before having to grab a cone faster than their partner when “cone” is called out. #espechat
A1: I do a week-long nutrition unit that covers MyPlate, RDAs, and macros. I also spend about 4 consecutive days on bones and muscles. All of my lessons involve movement as I teach the content. Throughout the year I also integrate content into their skill work #espechat
MyPlate Dice Bonk: Knock off the dice, match the # w/ its food group. If you complete your @MyPlate your group upgrades your equipment. If you roll a 1 or roll a duplicate, you run 1 lap. We’re in our 🏀unit so we used chest passing & 🏀dribbling. #Pegeeks#physed
A1) Our classroom Ts are responsible for "traditional" health content such as this. I tend not to do too much integration with these in my current situation. Looking to do more, particularly with nutrition content and concepts #espechat
“Saving Mr. T” is a Body Composition #physed lesson to teach our Ss how we need 20% fat mass & 80% fat free mass. We cover foods to eat sparingly & cardio activities we can engage in to burn those extra calories. YouTube link: https://t.co/EDu3J5679d 🙏2 @Goshengatorspe@MrLosePE
A1 This yr we taught health with our fitness unit. We used a couple of @OPENPhysEd activities. Also I teach health everytime students are coughing a lot #espechat
This my first year in this district so I am still getting used to the curriculum. We have a health curriculum that we use that does touch on nutrition and anatomy but is more geared toward social development. Starting fitness this week so i plan to integrate info in. #espechat
It was wonderful receiving some love from a member of the US House of Representatives in AZ @RepDavid & AZ Education Association President @AZ1Thomas, but these student letters make my heart warm! I'll cherish these forever! #physed#espechat@SHAPE_America@azhpe#proudteacher
Nutrition Musical Cards from @ILESPhysEd next weeks instant activity. 26 Focused Fitness food cards will be mounted on cones around the perimeter of the gym. 🎶▶️ Ss do a locomotor Mvmnt, 🎶⏹ Ss go to a food card & perform the exercise for that foods food group. #Physed#pegeeks
NOPE! We're in it again! Huge ice storm. Tons of limbs down and chunks of ice raining down from the trees every time the wind gusts. Crazy winter! #espechat
A2) I don’t ever add movement into my health lessons, I usually add health into my movements haha! I don’t do very specific health lessons but I may soon because of ND re-writing our health standards recently. #espechat
A2: 90% of the time we cover health lessons using movement through relay races, skill work, or fun activities/games students enjoy with the content mixed in. I have also used plagnets to assess students and keep them moving. #espechat
Nutrition You Choose: Group of 2-3 takes turns 🏀dribbling. While u r waiting your turn perform a You Choose mvmnt. Plan is to call out a food & the Ss performs the exercise for the food group. ✅4 understanding activity. YouTube: https://t.co/Y8JelCuTzz#physed#pegeeks
A2: Not exactly for the purpose of teaching a lesson, but here are a ton of Brain Boosts that can be used in the classroom: https://t.co/GWVn2rQv3G I would use these & discuss why brain boosts are important in school and in anything you do. #espechat
A3. Quiz quiz trade is a great way. Everyone gets a question and quizzes someone else. After the quiz, you trade cards and quiz someone new. Have done this with naming fruits/vegetables based on color and 5 comp of fitness #espechat
A2. Quiz quiz trade is a great way. Everyone gets a question and quizzes someone else. After the quiz, you trade cards and quiz someone new. Have done this with naming fruits/vegetables based on color and 5 comp of fitness #espechat
A2 At previous school, had the skeletal system puzzles. Primary likes an activity called bones and no bones @RunklesTara to teach about structure. #espechat
Nutrition Warm up: Spell the food by traveling to the letters, at each letter do the exercise 10x’s. (Max of 5 letters for longer food names) Older Ss talk about the Carbs, proteins & fats in each of the foods as they are moving from letter-letter. #Physed
Today, my K-2 Ss discussed ways we can keep our ❤️ healthy in addition to exercise. This activity helped solidify foods that are “heart healthy” and foods that aren’t as we get ready for the ❤️ Challenge Course! DL full PowerPoint for free here: https://t.co/KgeOcOtKKU#physed
A2 another is “true or false”. If the statement is true, students perform an exercise like knees to elbows. and if it’s false they do toe taps. You can use any content with this #espechat
A1) k-2 I have kids play "Couch Potatoe Tag" by @pe4everykid. We discuss how fruits and vegetables give us energy and make us feel good. 3-5 we practice reading nutrition labels and discuss moderation. #espechat
A2 One of my favorites is the Muscle Macarena...Biceps, triceps, deltoids, trapezius, etc etc...Hey My Muscles! Third grade “Name and locate the major muscles” 🕺🏻I #espechat
A3: Still focusing on objectives as I build lessons that cover those objectives. Using GIFs to display on a projector as visual cues for ss. Making sure there is enough equipment for ss to remain engaged and learn the content. #espechat
A2: @Goshengatorspe has an awesome activity where students run to the closer cone when healthy foods come up on the screen and the further cone when unhealthy foods come up. Love it! Here's more info: https://t.co/u4gBzxJwUi#espechat
A1 As of right now it’s sprinkled in, for example, during stretches, nutrition facts of the day on my whiteboard, make-up assignments for students on the medical bench. Would like to add these as a part of our PE Handbook as assignments #ESPEchat
A1) In one school we teach health and in the other 2 we have a nutrition and energy balance unit, as well as instant activities that involve talk about types of foods, bones, muscles etc... #espechat
A2: We play frisbee golf where there are questions at each “hole” and the answer and another question is at the next. Gets them outside and active while reviewing lessons. #espechat
Flexibility is the ability of a muscle to to move joint through a:
Full
Range
Of
Motion
Which spells out FROM. Basically it’s the ability to bend from one position to another. ✅🔗 for instructional video https://t.co/kSJFmIRSNJ@FocusedFitness2
A4: Yes and no. If too much is going on and learning targets arent clear ss will not get anything out of the lesson. However, if the learning targets are clear and ss understand what they are trying to accomplish, MEANINGFUL movement will allow for better understanding #espechat
A3: I try to break down activities into different stations and have students rotate through them in small groups. This allows me to float around to different groups and check in with them. #espechat
A2) I played "Muscle Tag" by @PEwhisperer and it was amazing! When they get tagged, they say name of muscle, then do an exercise benefiting the muscle they got tagged on. Genius! #espechat#PhysEd
A4 I feel like a health topic can be quickly introduced and explained by the teacher, but then there needs to be some sort of activity for more meaningful learning. Kids will remember an acitivity way longer than a lecture #espechat
A4) I think we need to be very purposeful in everything we do. Sometimes its OK to have lower MVPA time to accomplish more cognitive or affective-related objectives and outcomes #espechat
A4) Rarely do I think there can be too much movement. Just make it purposeful. A way my students move and learn is I say Locomotor, and they have to guess what others Ss are doing by asking, "Are you doing the skip?" Great assessment to see if Ss can differentiate. #espechat
A4: Depends on the lesson. If it's a new concept I think less is more or break it down into small activities, make your objectives reachable. If its a continuous concept then the students should have grasp the concept and be able to accomplish your objective.
#espechat
A3. Make the movement relatable to the content. Moving through cardiorespiratory system , different food tag games, muscle/bone steal the bacon #espechat
A4) Movement will assist in the learning of the topic. Stopping during the movement to go over the content a 2nd time could be beneficial too. #espechat
Yes- I put cones with labels for each muscle we worked on. If it wasn't a muscle we worked on, they picked the closest one. Ex: If tagged in lower back, they would be trapezius. #espechat
A4) This is something I struggle with constantly. I only see the stdnts for such a short period of time so I want to get them moving as much as poss but I feel it is important to take time to explain how and why we do things. I am always trying to find that balance. #espechat
A2b I’ve been wanting to do a bones/muscle fitness activity kind of like monopoly style where ss have to do “x” number of exercises for 💰 and they can buy bones/muscles. Compliments of @LovePhyEd 👍🏼 #ESPEchat
A3/4 I think experiences like the "heart obstacle courses" are especially effective at improving student learning. I've seen many of them. Here's one: https://t.co/tWubFLucg8#espechat
We love our PE teacher Mrs. Amy Strunk!!! Our Bobcats are learning about their hearts this week and going through the Heart Obstacle Course!!! #WatchUsRise#BobcatNation#HeartHealthy
A3) Stations with each station having a GIF on the projector, labeled. Color coordinate the exercises: Cardio=red, Muscular strength=black, etc. so they know what they're working on. Have self-assessments at each station to further DOK. #espechat
A5: Any lessons focusing on skills can be used to integrate health content. Explain what bones and muscles are being used to perform the skill, have ss dribble to different food groups, have ss throw at fitness components targets. #espechat
A4 Like others have been saying, as long as they know what the learning target is and they understand what we want them to learn less down time would be ok. But more might be required if introducing new concept. #espechat
MyPlate 🏀Dribbling. Groups of 2-3. Group picks a starting food group. Read through the list of foods. 1st dribbler dribbles & names 10 foods. Get stuck? Check the sheet, continue. Other members are counting & studying. @MrLosePE idea & made the sheet. #Physed
A3 This is a tough one and I think this is why I’ve turned to adding it like sprinkles to activities such as warm-ups and “facts of the day.” Hence, the reason I would like reinforcement work in their Handbook. Recommendations more than welcome! #ESPEchat
A5) When warming up, I say, "Stay on the perimeter, you know, like if you were...." And they say, "Grocery shopping!" Which reiterates an important math concept while also teaching students best places to grocery shop. From ground/tree=good, from bag/box/can=usually not #espechat
A4 Movement is always a huge positive, but I think it’s how you present it. Is it just the activity? Or are you hitting home with the content by revisiting it in your lesson and checking for understanding. #ESPEchat
I think a lot can be done with Guess the Exercise one. You can do Guess the Food, Food Group, etc. It can also work in other subject areas. esp History #espechat

A6: Summatives using plagnets so I can assess and still keep ss moving. Also, with ss having Chrome Books now assessments can be posted for them to complete online. Formatives can be done through ?, checks for understanding during the lessons, this or that powerpoints #espechat
I'm glad I can help! Lord knows I've used plenty from you!! Especially the scooter Would You Rather, as well as the basketball dribbling with multiple types of dribbles. https://t.co/0UYDydUphl#physed#espechat
A6: @plickers Plagnets have been very, very good to me. I can get daily assessments from my students on anything I want. Daily check for understandings. So simple to use & so effective. #ESPEchat
A6) I just started using #plickers and I am loving the results. I also started using @nearpod during my last round of health lessons which is awesome for getting and tracking responses from all students. Gives all students a voice which I love. #espechat
As stated earlier, frisbee golf is awesome for reviewing content and including activity. Love your ideas for including bones, muscles, body’s joints, planes of motion in other skill work. #espechat
A6) Same as physical skills- Plagnets, self-assess/peer assess with rubrics. I do a lot of "Point to the muscle this exercise works" for younger students, while older students say the muscle. I at least want the area. "Point to the station that gets heart going fastest" #espechat
A6 Lately I've been trying to catch them off guard. Today for fun I asked some students to tell me a SMART goal. If they said a complete one they earned a ticket. Other times I'll ask a question, toss them a ball and they have to give me the answer. Quick, fun, review #espechat
A6 I still use traditional assessments for health content but since our students have chrome books I like using google forms. Kahoot is a cool one but sometimes students are more concerned about answering fast rather than correct so it’s better as a formative. #espechat
A6: I’m getting better at implementing Plickers cards that help me get a quick pulse check to see who’s got it so far and who still needs more reinforcement. Use of PBAs are also great for students to demonstrate what they have learned. #espechat
A7: Our division has the Five for Life curriculum which is helpful and has muscle and bones that can be cut out. Also, twitter, brain pop, kids health are all amazing resources. #espechat
A7) TinyBop's Human Body App is so cool. Its very interactive and the Ss love it. It even gives you the option to pre record info so the kids can click and learn independently. #espechat
A7) Going to start using more of the things that tonight's fearless moderator, @ILESPhysEd, and the great @RHEPE1 have both shared through their answers here tonight! Thanks gentlemen! #espechat
A7: Use of chromebooks, @nearpod is great at helping me to create interactive health lessons, @FocusedFitness2 and Five for Life curriculum has also been fantastic! #espechat
In reply to
@ILESPhysEd, @nearpod, @FocusedFitness2
I love Nearpod! Also, Edpuzzle is JUST AWESOME! Here's an example that I created for a PD session: https://t.co/wHpLy8ALO4 Learning with video is SO much better when you have checks for understanding WITHIN the video. Redirecting the learning as needed is awesome! #espechat
Sarah, Here's a Plagnet tutorial I put together just a few weeks ago. It includes the resources I used when first starting out. https://t.co/gDK5K1RzAh#espechat
A5 The sky is the limit here—building a tabata series using different muscle groups, relay races using the plate and creating a well balanced breakfast/lunch or dinner, having students come up with different exercises for Mat Day relating to a particular muscle #ESPEchat
Late to the party but A1: I do a relay with nutriton bean bags and getting a balanced meal, muscles when we stretch, bones sometimes a puzzle at in the form of a relay. I do wish I infused a little more of all. Always a struggle when I am focused on movement! #espechat
@PEwhisperer is amazing because he shows himself teach in real life which is very useful and great to see, just like @thepespecialist . Thanks, gentlemen! #espechat

Awesome stuff tonight! Integrating health concepts into my lesson is something I have wanted focus on and now I have a ton great idea to delve into. Thanks everyone. #espechat
A6 Using @plickers / #plagnets is the way to go for me with large class sizes, I haven’t quite gotten the hang of efficient assessment with big groups. Yet another reason why to add some pages in our PE Handbook #ESPEchat
You only need one device to use Plickers/Plagnets and that's for you to use. It can even be your phone. That one of the real "draws". #espechat Check out @physeddepot's resources on both Plickers and Plagnets. You can start here: https://t.co/xkAljVP1O5
Thank you for tuning in tonight and for letting me moderate this #espechat! It is an honor to be able to collaborate with so many amazing educators! See everyone next week for another great chat!
