Hi everyone! Megan, 8th Science and co-founder of #122edchat. Happy to be sharing the stage with #cvtechtalk tonight! My favorite game was definitely Dress Up...that counts, right?
Vanessa Heller: #inquiry#PBL and #GiftedEd trainer and middle school humanities teacher from Southern California. Fave game as a kid was playing dress up or anything with words or questions like trivia. (My husband says I am far too serious for games, btw. LOL!) #122edchat

A1: When students play, they are more likely to remember the learning as an experience. This creates "sticky" learning that is not easily forgotten after a test of rote memorization. #122EdChat#CVTechTalk
A1: So many! You get to see honest interaction between Ss and Ts who are playing, competition, creative thinking, strategy, math and language skills #122edchat
A1: When play is present in the classroom, learning is a byproduct of fun. Excitement is tied to learning and struggle or failure leads to enhanced grit.

A1:Some play time in class really restores the students focus. I saw it with my fourth graders and it definitely doesn't change with my eighth graders. #122edchat

A1 Play fosters use of the imagination. Play encourages freedom to think, create, and do in a no-risk but all fun trial-and-error environment. In my middle school classes, play now is more about choice, creativity, and trying things out…. Think, create, and do!#122edchat
A1: sometimes disguising learning is the best way to get kids to love to learn, but more than that, play teaches real life skills like teamwork, cooperation, problem solving, taking turns, and more. #122edchat#CVTechTalk
A1: It helps connect the learning to an exciting experience allowing an increased opportunity for them to retain and be able to reflect on the event. #122edchat
A1: I"m a big fan of laughter, I think play allows us to be ourselves, not worry about being right/wrong, to laugh and have fun.. which helps us feel safe & not as stressed #122edchat
A1: This is the natural way that children interact with one another, take chances, share and explore and have fun. Isn't that what want for our students? #122edchat
I'm Heather, from Seattle area and I teach Kindergarten. My favorite game might have been Oregon Trail (but I also loved Candyland, Monopoly and Sim City) #122edchat
Welcome to #122EdChat, hosted by #CVTechTalk. Tonight's topic is: The Power of Play. Introduce yourself and tell us your favorite game to play as a child.
Hello Hello, My name is Emily Alcantar and I'm a pre service High School Teacher in the Boston area! As a child I loved to play kick the can and manhunt :) #122edchat
Imagination is something that doesn't get leveraged as much in an era of pacing guides and fidelity to curriculum. Imagination fosters critical and divergent thinking. #122edchat
A1 Play fosters use of the imagination. Play encourages freedom to think, create, and do in a no-risk but all fun trial-and-error environment. In my middle school classes, play now is more about choice, creativity, and trying things out…. Think, create, and do!#122edchat
A1: Ss benefit from play in the classroom because it is so engaging. I have seen Ss who don't work on typical assignments thrive through play based assignments #122edchat
A1: Playing in the classroom opens minds & develops a sense of imagination that some Ss don't have an opportunity to hone outside of school. It enhances creativity & allows Ss to feel more relaxed. #122edchat
A1: Part of "playing" is having to problem solve, learning to compromise, and communicate. These are essential skills that will never go out of style. It only will help to prepare our students to function as members of society. #122edchat

A1: play keeps students engaged in the lesson. It allows them to have fun and learn at he same time! @mdeegan122 showed me a game called knockout for review and they kids LOVE it! Ss constantly ask to play! #122edchat
A1 Play is an antidote to the low-choice, high-stress environment of school. It’s all about creativity, critical thinking, and relationships. #122edchat
A1- There are many benefits to incorporating play. The greatest benefit is the student's learn to work with others. Critical thinking skills are developed through game play. #122edchat
Welcome to #122EdChat, hosted by #CVTechTalk. Tonight's topic is: The Power of Play. Introduce yourself and tell us your favorite game to play as a child.
A1: Ss benefit from play in the classroom because it is so engaging. I have seen Ss who don't work on typical assignments thrive through play based assignments #122edchat
A1: Through experience, I have noticed the incorporation of play in a classroom helps students become relaxed and comfortable with each other #122edchat
A1 Play can activate a different part of the brain, and can allow for even the most reluctant learners to experience success. Plus, who doesn't want to have fun once and awhile. #122edchat
A2: I use some sort of gamification everyday! Especially with @classcraftgame (it’s an amazing gift to teachers!)
Children learn best when they can explore and what better way to do that then games? #122edchat
A1: Students love it! If they enjoy the activity, they'll enjoy learning and get more out of it. Pay also means hands on activities which helps the experience make a bigger impact on students' working memory. #122EdChat
A1 - one major benefit to play is that it allows students to build social skills. Curricula is often is missing this critical skill that guides Ss to become productive & collaborative citizens. #122edchat
A2: In MS I have seen teachers use plays or create skits. Students have created digital games w/ coding. I think makerspaces are like indoor playgrounds... tons of learning there #122edchat
A2: Games can definitely be incorporated into education! I've seen them in Escape Rooms! We've done charades with figurative language too! SO MUCH. #122edchat
Hahahahaha! Galaga! We had a Galaga game in the lounge in my freshman dorm at Western IL. There was a kid that played it so much that we started calling him "Galaga". #122edchat
I'm Meghan, I am currently working on my Master's of Education to become a Middle Childhood Teacher in Math and Science! My favorite games as a child were any type of board game. #122edchat
Welcome to #122EdChat, hosted by #CVTechTalk. Tonight's topic is: The Power of Play. Introduce yourself and tell us your favorite game to play as a child.
A2: Gamification is big - I have a gamified class, and its been great. I also see it with Game based learning, adding play elements into content areas. Global @GSPlayDay and team competitions #122edchat
A1: In Kindergarten (and early learning really) play is the number one engager. They are so motivated by games and play-the exploration--you can almost see their brains growing! #122edchat
A2: Gamification has been a big trend lately. I love it! But even better is when I see teachers that allow students to create their own game. #122EdChat#CVTechTalk
A1. Part of play is having to problem solve, working together, developing forms of communication and collaboration skills and building relationships. #122edchat
A1: In Kindergarten (and early learning really) play is the number one engager. They are so motivated by games and play-the exploration--you can almost see their brains growing! #122edchat
A2: I get to push into the SMS Stem Lab everyday. It is truly amazing what these Ss create! Also we (@mdeegan122) utilize Prodigy and Dreambox for Math review. Ss that don't do homework are playing at home without it being assigned. #122edchat
A2: I gotta give a couple shout outs to some of my #gamification heroes: @MrBaskwill, @EddiesClass, and @MrHebertPE. All have, in various ways, helped to inspire me to venture into this frontier. Need to be bold and take the first step. #122edchat
A1: I"m a big fan of laughter, I think play allows us to be ourselves, not worry about being right/wrong, to laugh and have fun.. which helps us feel safe & not as stressed #122edchat
Coincidentally I gave a kid detention yesterday for saying "wacka wacka wacka" non stop after I asked then told him not to (serveal, several times)...he was being Pac Man.... #122edchat
A2- A lot of times you see game play to review for tests and quizzes. I have also seen it as reinforcement on a subject.
We like to use it to build team rappport. #122edchat
There was a Sesame Street episode where a girl lost her jack and they got it by tying a magnet to a shoestring. That is some STEM right there. #122edchat
A2 My youngest kid’s preschool was all play based… great except that my kid wanted to read and write too but it wasn’t allowed. I have seen both Montessori and Reggio Emilio models of education which are appealing in their emphasis on choice and play. A2 #122edchat
A2: The most obvious is that I have 40 minutes of a straight up play block. The kids pick what they want to do and go for it. When we have half days or an assembly and they miss it--there are tears involved! It's so important to them! #122edchat
A2: one T at my school I've had opportunity to observe who is great at adding play/games to her curricula is @bmilla84 - really enjoyed a unit review she did with teams and a connect-4 style challenge on the SMARTboard - her Ss were so engaged! #122edchat@CaldwellElemen
Barb, Kansas Kindergarten
A1:Children learn many of life's lesson by playing together. Many social skills can be addressed and they can learn that the world is bigger than just them.
#IHMarchMadness#122EdChat
A2: I have been playing with a merge cube for the past hour and thinking about all of the fun ways it can be used in the classroom!
Thanks @MillerMathSMS for picking one up. I love playing with VR tools! #122edchat
A2: Is gamification more tech based?
Lately I have noticed more math games being used in early childhood, which could make it more enjoyable for most. #122edchat
A3: I teach culinary so we use kitchen tools to cook or “play” in the classroom. I would also consider field trips to industry related as “play”. #122edchat
A2 b My masters thesis was on emergent literacy in 0-5 year olds (case studies of my daughters)...observing them becoming literate through play. You create the environment and let the kids try things out. #122edchat
A3: Play can be incorporated simply by writing direction in a different way. @BreakoutEdu is a great way for non-tech play to lead to great learning experiences.
#122edchat
A3: I teach culinary so we use kitchen tools to cook or “play” in the classroom. I would also consider field trips to industry related as “play”. #122edchat
A3- Playdough, paper clips, legos, paper, crayons, a ball so many ways to incorporate play when we do not limit our Ss by our imagination limitations...kids are much more creative then we are! #122edchat
A3: Desks and paper. When I teach trench warfare, I have students flip desks to build trenches and then fire paper balls at each other. Students LOVE it and are always asking me to repeat it. #122edchat
A2 @kahoot@quizlet live @quizizz
Even good science inquiry has an element of play involved. That's why I love science so many opportunities for experimentation and play with materials. #122edchat
I get that pacing guides are there to make sure you get through everything. They are very helpful for new teachers. However, how does a pacing guide made 5 years ago take into account changes in the classroom and the Ss who are sitting in front of you? #dontgetmestarted#122edchat
A2: Math was always an easy way for me to incorporate play - student races for time and multiplying mixed numbers or ratios to design classrooms and schools #122edchat
A3: I have snapping cubes for a few projects and students love to pick them up and build. We use Cardboard for making stuff & kids love that. Also LEGOs. #122edchat
A3: Desks and paper. When I teach trench warfare, I have students flip desks to build trenches and then fire paper balls at each other. Students LOVE it and are always asking me to repeat it. #122edchat
A3: Dice, blocks, bingo chips, puzzles, laminated pouches, deck of cards.
Right now in our writing center, students put together a puzzle and write about the picture they put together! #122EdChat
A2 - Ts provide opportunities for students to tap into their passions by incorporating musical instruments, artistic tasks, & kinesthetic movements to name a few. Most times, students think they’re only playing, but they’re learning & growing, too. #WinWin#122EdChat
A2. Play can be incorporated into gamification characters, math games in learning, in designing or inventing as a team depending on project. #122edchat
A3- Playdough, paper clips, legos, paper, crayons, a ball so many ways to incorporate play when we do not limit our Ss by our imagination limitations...kids are much more creative then we are! #122edchat
I completely agree! As I have begun my classroom experiences this semester, I have realized too many students take life too seriously. Play offers them the opportunity to become engaged and relax! #122edchat
A3: Working in the @SmartLab_tweets Lab, everything is hands on with a great focus on problem solving and communication. Not game play, per se, but it is changing the face of education for @Simmonsknights1. @mitchell_mj can attest to this. #122edchat
A3: Any time I can just gets kids up and moving, I consider that "play." More literally, I like to use "I Have - Who Has" as a review or intro unit. #122edchat
A3: Step 1: outline square on floor with masking tape. Step 2: put up a sign that says "Dancing Zone" Step 3: play music. I solemnly swear that this works very well! #122edchat
A3: One of my favorite no-tech reviews lately has been a fact practice during tutoring. Kids are using their fingers behind their back, surprise their partner with a number 2-10, first one to multiply numbers displayed gets a point. #122edchat
In my HS math classes "gamification" is from being able to re-do quizzes. A S can go from a D to an A in 15 minutes. Sometimes it's D-C-B-A "I win!" #122edchat
A3- Sometimes in class we will play board games and different card games. It helps to build a sense of team and comfort for the classes. I also like to do some low tech trivia reviews for quizzes and tests. #122edchat
A3: this is something I'd love to start incorporating - I've seen how K/1 teachers use play/games in the classroom, I need to find engaging yet "on task" ways to do so in 4th grade reading/writing. Want to do more than just have choice reading or @Istationed time #122edchat
A1: Play allows children to use their creativity . It also helps aid in development. Play also helps learning as students are able to take in more oxygen, which is needed for learning. #122EdChat
A3: Tossing bean bags or beach balls to answer questions. Getting kids up an moving around as a way of responsing to questions is a great way to assess understanding as well. Music!! #122edchat
A1- For my littles play builds vocabulary, expressive language skills, creates schema, turn taking, problem solving, and social skills to name a few of the benefits I see daily. #122edchat
Each kid has a notecard with a statement and a question. "I have atoms. Who has the definition for bonds?" Student with the statement that answers the question goes next! #122edchat
A3: Tossing bean bags or beach balls to answer questions. Getting kids up an moving around as a way of responsing to questions is a great way to assess understanding as well. Music!! #122edchat
A4: I love @tinkercad ! So easy for students to use and they can design all kinds of fun things, they teach each other, and then 3D print things to play with. #122edchat
A3: As a secondary ed major I can see play more like changing the way a book or math topic is being taught.... perhaps have students act out scenarios or be human points on a large graph #122edchat
A3 - I loved letting the students take the reins and using (within reason) anything in the classroom to create and play. Their ideas were usually better than mine & they were more engaged since I handed over the control. #122edchat
A3- Yahtzee!! Great for so many math skills! Ss also love Farkle for math. In LA Ss enjoy Scoot task cards and some of those ol’ reading board games I’ve had around for 15+ years #122edchat
A4 I played Quizlet Live for the first time on yesterday in class. It was amazing to watch how into it they got, and the collaboration was awesome. #122edchat
A4: I like to take an inventory of the tools we have, then let kids define what they want to learn. When it really works, the resulting projects are essentially play. #122edchat
A4: At this point @icivics. Next year when our school division goes 1:1 I want to totally copy @Stella_Pollard and incorporate Classroom Craft into my room! #122edchat
A4: When I taught US History to 8th graders, I used to use this web app game matching all the states with and without lines as well as capitals to states. Those kids to this day still remember playing that game as well as the states and capitals. #122edchat
A3 Um, I might have a costume/prop bucket… One group used my styrofoam swords and shields to film a battle of Assyrians vs. Hebrews…. I also have oxygen masks, old cell phones, hard hats…you know, the usual.. #122edchat
A4: I use Kahoot!, Quizlet Live, Google Sites, Google Forms-the entire G-Suite honestly, WebQuests, YouTube and others I am sure I will recall after I post this🤪. #UMEdTech#122edchat
A3 Playdoh, legos, stuffed animals, squishy balls, and whatever else I can get my hands on. One time they painted with dandelions they’d pulled out of the school garden. #122edchat
A4: In the past, @megan_hacholski and I would teach the kids the value of CS with @scratch. Actually got to talk to some awesome folks about this yesterday at #ICE18. Everyone should be coding. #122edchat
Q3: I recently went to Dollar tree and bought several games like darts, nerf basketball, billiards, and pinball. I am using them in class. I have a bag full of games and only spent $12.00. #122EdChat
A4b: Oh and before I forget I also have @goPEEQ! @LindaFarringer you would love it. It is a dodgeball with a microphone in it that bluetooth connects to speakers. I throw it around to help facilitate conversation. #122edchat@ERobbPrincipal
A4: some of my Ss love the reading games on @Istationed (which is the online program our district uses this year) but not all are into it. I want to learn a lot more about making activities/games on SMARTboard. #122edchat#CVTechTalk
A4- There are so many great game websites out there. I have used the old Carmen San Diego to help with gathering clues and problem solving. I use a lot to review and reinforce different concepts. Kids love it and they do not realize they are learning!! #122edchat
You are my EDU brother from another mother! I rock all of those things weekly! But I am curious as to what a Twitter quest is! Please explain. #122edchat
A4: I have always loved seeing the kids get engaged playing Kahoot. After #ICE18 I saw so many awesome tech tools. Can't wait to see them in use in the classroom. #122edchat
A2: Lots of different games in education! You can go low tech or high tech. There is everything from trashcan basketball to escape rooms. Kahoot, etc. I have even seen the gamification of classrooms which is pretty interesting. #122edchat
a3 My S teams role play. Ex: how to get team back on task. How to make sure everyone understands. How to help someone w/o telling what to do (coaching) #122edchat
I don't need no stinkin' dancing zone! #RandomDancing happens anywhere! hahahaha BTW, I showed clip from Singing in the Rain for Ancient Hebrews unit about "Moses" just for fun: https://t.co/CJzGMdIyJx#122edchat

We use playdough, puzzles, dice, blocks, kitchen center with a cash register and food to serve, we love to paint, cut, and glue!
#IHMarchMadness#122edchat
A5: I am totally gonna look into this Twitter quest thing. I preach Smarty Pins, but I haven't used enough. Gonna rock it for enrichment on my next RTI day. #122edchat
A4 Our play is low-tech. Computers are for writing. Oh, except for that time when I taught them how to make a unicorn rollerskate across a Google slide. #122edchat
A4 Kids use phones to film…no special tech. They use chromebooks too but phones are way easier & many kids are pretty savvy editors. I show video clips to inspire fun (play) & relate to content. Here’s live footage of Moses & 10 Commandants: https://t.co/jO5maJQUmL? #122edchat
A5: I have obvious play time in my room but I'm inspired to think more about where I can push it into my day where it's not "explicit" play time #122EdChat
I showed Singing in the Rain (Gene Kelly's dance number ) when we had rain yesterday... Rain is a rarity for us! #122edchat The kids are still humming along!

I actually run into a lot of them on social media. Debating opens up their thinking, not that I'm debating on purpose. Seeing cool innovations they haven't experienced on social media helps 😊 #122edchat
Friends in #122edchat you may be sad that today is over, but fret not, join the party in #waledchat tomorrow when we reflect on this past month in education for us! See you there at 8 Central 9 Eastern!
We use computers, laptops, Ipads, Ipods, and Kindles with learning apps. We use ABCMouse and SuperStar. We love our document camera and our Math Alive!
#IHMarchMadness#122edchat
a5: I saw a lot of people post links that I've opened in separate tabs... going to go back and read through some to find ideas that match my grade level & subject area and level of tech availability/knowledge. #excited#122edchat
We talked about play in a recent episode - if you want to continue reflecting on the value of play, check it out here! https://t.co/WBM7Bo3MSQ#122edchat
I would check out Peardeck for responding to prompts bc you can watch Ss by name on one monitor while you project responses anonymously on the other monitor. I call out, "Chris, do you need a comma in there somewhere?" etc. #122edchat
A5: I think it is so important to be a light for our students. To me it means coming in everyday with a smile on my face, believing in them when they do not believe in themselves and demonstrating optimism. #122edchat
Q4: I used edmodo last year but my school recently integrated and LMS with all my classes so I am using that now. The only teach I'm currently using is that lms and tablets that I purchased. #122EdChat
A5 Well, not sure yet because this chat is going so fast that I haven't had time to read everyone's awesome ideas! Gonna do something fun cuz that's how we roll! And I teach middle school... you better have fun. #122edchat
A5: I am grateful @MrPStrunk that you reminded me about that tossable microphone. I looked into buying one at the beginning of the year and then kind of put it to the side. I am going order one for staff this week as a way to incorporate play and student voice. #122edchat
Will try using a minute to win it game for STEM contest for Ss. Also, will try to have Ss design a game for Ss to play in classroom or lib. which uses circuitry that other Ss will be able to play! #122edchat
Dollar stores, when I visit folks at the hospital I take extra supplies, my kids' too small costumes, old tech...random collection always gets put to good use #122edchat
A4 and A5: I am enjoying learning about the high tech games you guys are posting. I have been using mostly apps like Kahoot, and am looking to breathe some new life into that part of class. #122edchat
A5 - For me, it’s supporting Ts as they work to incorporate purposeful play. Many Ts are fearful of being reprimanded for this & don’t provide this vital opportunity for collaboration, communication, creativity & social & social-emotional skill building . #122edchat
a4 in math I use Peardeck to monitor skill development, Desmos for exploration, Google Drawing for group collaboration & team responses. & Khan for individualization #122edchat
And I may or may not have an oxygen mask with a long tube in that prop/costume bucket (and a spit/barf bowl)... They were just going to throw them away at the hospital..... #122edchat
Oh yeah!!!!! I will show this to the kid who served detention (which may defeat the purpose of having him not say wacka wacka wacka, lol!) Love me some Fozzy Bear! #122edchat
Still my favorite. Love introducing it to middle school kids and my daughter's 7th grade friends. In this high-tech world its great to see how much fun they have playing it. #122edchat
Guess who was super cool and worked on grad school until 7:40 without realizing it. Yuuuuup this guy. Sorry, #122edchat and #fearlessedchat friends. One day, ONE DAY, I'll get this timing down...
