Hey #122edchat, Scott from Winchester VA. I teach HS history and host a relatively new edchat #fcpslearn on Tuesdays at 7pm ET. I love to vacation anywhere with a beach, sun and umbrella drinks.
Hi #122edchat! Noel. ELA teacher from NC here. My favorite spot to vacation is on the outer banks of NC. It is quiet, peaceful and naturally beautiful. The beaches aren't overdeveloped, so your views are not obstructed. Nothing else washes away the world's worries like the ocean.
Hey all, Phil from Northern Virginia signing in through tweetdeck while @LBStrunk and I are at a free movie for Teacher Appreciation Week at the local dinner theater. I teach 7th grade US History II and am the founder of #waledchat. I LOVE cruise ships! #122edchat
Ryan, author of #BeTheOne For Kids and elementary school principal. Looking forward to learning from all of you tonight and really excited that Be The One For Kids is now on @amazonhttps://t.co/bA28pCGFYS#122edchat
Vanessa Heller: #inquiry#pbl#GiftedEd trainer, 6th gr. Humanities T from So. Cali. I love Kauai but any place tropical (not humid) with nice hotels (that provide slippers & bathrobes), safe tasty food to eat, pool, beachfront, fast wi-fi, & cabana boy at my service! #122edchat
I honestly don't have a favorite vacation spot, only favorite vacation people. Getting away nearly anywhere with friends and family is always a favorite.
#122edchat
Hi #122edchat! Danielle Miller, 6th Grade Math, Oak Lawn, IL .. favorite vacation spot was Playa del Carmen & Cozumel, Mexico .. I went scuba diving for the 1st time there!
Forgot...my favourite vacation spot...Disney...although only been once. A dream = Hawaii...but honestly, anywhere with my family and friends! #122edchat
Hi! I'm Lilian from Massachusetts and I am a student/preservice teacher at Lesley University, hoping to teach math one day! My absolute favorite vacation spot would have to be Vietnam, from what I could remember of it!
#122edchat
I am Debb Adams from Lexington, SC. I teach MS Drama--the theatre kind, not the hallway kind! LOL! My favorite vacation destination is Puerto Rico! I love it, and know it's not the same now, but need to go back to help!! #122edchat
Yes #122edchat! Lauren from NY - 6th grade English teacher and author of EMPOWER Your Students. Favorite vacation spot is the Jersey shore where @jhweinstein and I went on our honeymoon.
Eric Lawson from Maine. I'm the Director of Tech & Libraries for the York School Department. I love to travel and see new places, but I do love a good hike in the mountains. #122edchat
A1 As a history teacher, looking back at events that evoke empathy works best. Then, by modeling and teachable moments...many exist in Middle School. #122edchat
Hey #122edchat I’m a reading specialist in Oak Lawn for rsd122. Absolute favorite vacation spot is Treasure Island/Maderia Beach, FL. BEST memories ever.
#122edchat Hey everyone, Bronwyn from Australia. I am a teacher and founder of #OurGlobalClassroom. My favourite holiday destination I have visited is Bora Bora
A1: As a history teacher, I am regularly bringing my students to different times and meeting people of different eras. Empathy is an essential component of what I teach, and I always remind my students that before we judge the past we should understand it! #122edchat
A1- I try to model empathy myself. I try to put my students walk in someone else's shoes. I try to be empathy to both my students and my colleagues. #122edchat
A1: Three tough questions. All of them can be addressed the same way. Reframing situations from the perspective of the other person. Examine the root (cause) of the action rather than the fruit (response) is also helpful in coming to an understanding. #122edchat
A1: In science, I try to refer back to past discoveries in the fields of STEM as often as possible so that Ss can see the progress we've made over the years. That helps develop a sense of empathy for what has come before them. #122edchat
A1. We encourage Ss to show empathy by working in community circles and listening to each other. Our staff is encouraged to show empathy by putting themselves in others shoes. Empathy is a great way to learn someones true story. #122edchat
Ryan, author of #BeTheOne For Kids and elementary school principal. Looking forward to learning from all of you tonight and really excited that Be The One For Kids is now on @amazonhttps://t.co/bA28pCGFYS#122edchat
A1: Empathy for me is best taught through experiential learning. Ss and colleagues learn more deeply when they can truly feel and experience the learning.
#122edchat
A1: As a history teacher, I am regularly bringing my students to different times and meeting people of different eras. Empathy is an essential component of what I teach, and I always remind my students that before we judge the past we should understand it! #122edchat
A1 I try to teach empathy by living it and modelling it. Empathy and discussions need to be part of regular school learning. Treating others with love and understanding, being there, building a community, we need to live it for students and staff. Lead with <3. #122edchat
A1: One way I teach empathy is by modeling. Ss constantly see how we as Ts respond to situations (Good ones like Ss making the soccer team or bad ones like a Ss losing a parent or just having a rough day). Ss notice the effort & care you put into them & their peers #122edchat .
A1:My coteacher and I teach empathy through literature. We try on a daily basis to model empathy for our students. I try to be empathetic with my peers and they will with me when I need it. #122edchat
A1 One way I teach students to show compassion for themselves as well as each other is when they write about their struggles. They discover their vulnerabilities, common humanity, and values. #122edchat
A1- I teach empathy in many ways.. I use literature and discuss perspective. Also- have my students pair up with students in the Multiply Disabled class- call it Peer Buddies. We also do service projects like making blessing bags for the homeless #122edchat
Q1: I would teach/encourage empathy to my students/peers/colleagues by showing it, through caring for them, listening to them, and working to understand them even if we don't share the same opinions/ thoughts.
#122edchat
A1:My coteacher and I teach empathy through literature. We try on a daily basis to model empathy for our students. I try to be empathetic with my peers and they will with me when I need it. #122edchat
A1 6th gr SS curriculum (ancient civilizations) lends well to teaching empathy. We deal w/ people/human nature > how cruel or how kind people can be. In ELA we read #ALongWalkToWater & #TheGiver which focus on social issues. It’s important to show Ss how “others” live #122edchat
Hi, I'm Lynn! I am from Wisconsin. I am currently attending the University of Wisconsin Platteville where I am studying to be a teacher and will start student teaching this fall! My favorite vacation spot is Florida! #122edchat
A1: our class motto is #ChooseKind and I often find ways to tie it to our LEQ/UEQ. I pull articles from Teaching Tolerance (great resource!) and had an amazing global collab with @NowakRo#122edchat
A1: Empathy is front and center in my theatre instruction. Putting ourselves in characters' shoes as the make decisions--good and bad--is the ultimate empathy instruction. I then bring this to real world situations. We often use real world sits for writing activities. #122edchat
Welcome back, Bronwyn! I have been singing sad, old man karaoke in your absence. I heard @MrMac_Walker has been also singing Backstreet Boys. #122edchat
A1: The best way to teach skills like empathy is by modeling. Students do not naturally know what the word means, show them. Talk about it.
Also make sure you have a community within your classroom that supports empathy. #122edchat
#122edchat A1 What a GREAT question! Opening others up to realize that EVERYONE is going through something is the quickest way to teach empathy in my experience. You’re always more understanding when you remember that everyone is going through things we may never know of.
#122edchat A1 I teach the toughest of the toughest kids & I bring the world to them, show them there is people worse off than them. This weeks lesson here https://t.co/V2TTKqi4Cc transformed my classroom & produced this https://t.co/YPnbk8gFLs
A1: The best way to teach skills like empathy is by modeling. Students do not naturally know what the word means, show them. Talk about it.
Also make sure you have a community within your classroom that supports empathy. #122edchat
A1: We read books and short stories that require the students to put themselves in the shoes of people who are marginalized. We discuss their situations and relate them to everyday life. Among my colleagues, we discuss events and their impacts on our students. #122edchat
A1b: Many of our MS Ts use Harkness Tables as well which can lend themselves well to deeper discussions and encourage Ss to see things from different angles. #122edchat
A1.2
It's harder to "teach" empathy to colleagues. I do this by reminding them--when they need it--they the Ss have lives beyond our walls, the school's walls, and we have no clue what they have come through, whether it be that morning or long term. #122edchat
A1: You HAVE to model - especially with "littles." Day #1 - my students learned that we are all family, and no one shall be embarrassed. We also come to the understanding that we learn more from mistakes than we do correct answers. #122edchat
High schoolers are great at discussing empathy. They teach me new things all the time. (And they will point out when you aren't considering their perspective.) #122edchat
A2 I give my students a Free Onion if they pay attention in class. That, and I use humor, sarcasm, and interesting stories in my mini-lessons. #122edchat
A1: Empathy is front and center in my theatre instruction. Putting ourselves in characters' shoes as the make decisions--good and bad--is the ultimate empathy instruction. I then bring this to real world situations. We often use real world sits for writing activities. #122edchat
A2 Using a timer (I call this “positive pressure”) helps kids hunker down to get a task done (plus I mess with the time but don’t tell them, lol). I find that an engaging lesson with discussion about matters that matter bring instant engagement. Boring = bored, no? #122edchat
A1) read alouds are a great way to model empathy and make connections. I strive to model it in my interactions with Ss and Ts. Last, I’m transparent and authentic with everyone #122edchat
High schoolers are great at discussing empathy. They teach me new things all the time. (And they will point out when you aren't considering their perspective.) #122edchat
A2: Providing as many hands-on opportunities as possible keeps Ss engaged. I also stay away from the "sage on the stage" experience at all costs! Let the kids take the lead. #122edchat
A2: I like to think the way I tell stories of the past keeps students plugged into what we are doing. Giving them independent tasks and giving them voice and choice I think also helps them feel like they are active producers of historical knowledge. #122edchat@ERobbPrincipal
A2- Engagement is always difficult. I try to make my lessons as fun as possible. I also try to limit the outside distractions as much as I can.#122edchat
A2: In the Lab, we have the students create SMART goals. They are responsible for completing their engagements in 5-10 days. Goal setting is helpful in supporting students and maintaining focus. #122edchat
A2. In order to get students to focus in, we must make sure that our instruction and the learning taking place is relevant. Show our Ss why and how the information is applicable and the possibilities are endless. #122edchat#BeTheOne
#122edchat Empathy is recognizing your behavior + underlying emotions in other creatures. We've all felt fear, joy, anger, love, the urge to violence, pride, shame.
What do you think that person is feeling when he acts that way? What are YOU feeling when you act that way?
A2: Make learning personalized for them! Stop trying to make learning be tailored to a one-size fits all norm. We have the tools to make the learning process be so relatable to our kids! Do it! #122edchat
A2: I keep my classroom moving like a commercial! Lots of engagement, music for every transition, and always...ALWAYS looking for new ideas! #122edchat
A2- Most important rule- give them work that is personal and engaging. Any time we can incorporate some ownership and/or choice, kids are more likely to be engaged. #122edchat
I first learned about the Harkness method from the documentary Most Likely to Succeed. It's quite powerful and allows all Ss to contribute to the conversation. https://t.co/xpSCtJ4PfC#122edchat
A1: I tell my story. And most of my story. The vulnerable side, the times I failed, etc. I allow time and space for ss to share their stories (or others’ stories. The only way we can have empathy for each other is to know each other’s stories. #122edchat
A1. Modeling empathy in front of our Ss. Having a Ss put themselves into another person's situation and feelings is important! We never know exactly what someone's going through with their problems! Be caring, listen, and understanding #122edchat
A1: Agree on modeling, and also having students channel how they would feel in a certain situation, then realizing that is how others in that situation most likely feel too. #122edchat
A2 #122edchat You need to have a never ending bag of tricks! #TLAP is a way of life in the classroom to help students stay engaged. You do whatever it takes! Sometimes that’s dancing like a fool, other times that’s speaking barely above a whisper to reel them back in!
A2: Connect with the students. Interest them in what they are learning. Have deep conversations about what they are learning and how they are learning. #122edchat
A1: You HAVE to model - especially with "littles." Day #1 - my students learned that we are all family, and no one shall be embarrassed. We also come to the understanding that we learn more from mistakes than we do correct answers. #122edchat
A2: Keeping students engaged is a combo of many things from relationships to content and tech integration to harnessing student passions. It is everyone feeling valued and seeking to contribute.
#122edchat
A2: Personally, I can shut out distractions when something really matters to me. Otherwise, I can get distracted with my phone or Netflix.. a classroom is very similar. If you make a lesson/task MATTER, the Ss will be engaged. Utilizing tech always helps too! #122edchat
A2: From the beginning of the year my coteacher and I teach the students that they are in the driver seat. They know they get to make decisions in the classroom. In return they are "all in" when they are with us. (See what I did there lol) #122edchat
A1: As a history teacher, I am regularly bringing my students to different times and meeting people of different eras. Empathy is an essential component of what I teach, and I always remind my students that before we judge the past we should understand it! #122edchat
A2: i sometimes struggle with this but I'm working on it. Actually have a fun review game in the works which is currently all iver floor of my home office. I want to start using more music in the classroom too. #122edchat
A1: I think it is important to expose students to empathy through literature. Having students read about what others might be experiencing and going through can be eye-opening for some students. Sharing these books and ideas with colleagues can also be helpful! #122edchat
A2: Great question! This seems to get harder & harder all the time. I love the phrase less is more. I mention it often and truly believe in it. It helps me stay focused, & I try to offer that advice up to my peer Ts & Ss. #122edchat
#122edchat A2: Value and ownership. Let them know that they are valued (and how) when they are engaged. Let them hold the marker and drive the conversation. If THEIR exploration is the lesson, they'll be engaged. Nobody thinks of themselves as boring!
A1. We encourage Ss to show empathy by working in community circles and listening to each other. Our staff is encouraged to show empathy by putting themselves in others shoes. Empathy is a great way to learn someones true story. #122edchat
A2. I think it’s investing students in big goals that are relevant to them. They can’t see school as “school” they need to see it as the vehicle that is going to help them reach their goals. Start by learning more about your Ss and what they care about :) #122edchat
✨Walk in someone else’s shoes! Encourage students to examine other perspectives. Kids tend to have kindergarten more empathetic hearts than we sometimes give them credit for, especially when they have the chance to reflect! #122edchat✨
A2 You can't expect engagement if you don't build relationships. That is the way. We need to learn how to handle distractions. Build respect, empathy, compassion, understanding. Build our class learning together. Focus on individual needs. Keep every student at the <3. #122edchat
A2) provide choice!!! Allowing students to have ownership of how they demonstrate understanding is powerful, allow them choice in their seat/space/materials!!! #122edchat
A2: Make learning like play. Allow them to make connections on their own and discoveries on their own. Sit down and learn with them. Whistle while you work. (Engage in conversations as you are learning with them.) #122edchat
A2 You can't expect engagement if you don't build relationships. That is the way. We need to learn how to handle distractions. Build respect, empathy, compassion, understanding. Build our class learning together. Focus on individual needs. Keep every student at the <3. #122edchat
A2: The best way to keep students engaged is to keep each activity to around 15 minutes. It is not always possible to do this, but when you can, it works best. Teens usually can attune well to something for around 1 min. per year of their age. #122edchat
A2b I'm also super honest w/ Ss particularly about our history books; Kids think history is boring cuz we whitewash the drama, scandal, and subversion out! I entice them with the freedom to read whatever they want when they're older! Then they can learn the good stuff! #122edchat
A2- Students will stay engaged when they have a voice and a choice in class. Also use different types of engaging actvities like @bloxelsbuilder#122edchat
A2:
I do this best by keeping them active. My class is perfect for that. We learn by doing. I also give a lot of choice, and break class into manageable pieces. For 3rd pd 8th graders, I let them eat, since it's at 10:15, and they don't eat lunch until 1:00. #122edchat
A3- I work mainly with staff now, but similar rules apply. I think it’s advantageous to let all express their diverse perspectives and viewpoints. #122edchat
A3- We recognize all holidays. We discuss peoples differences. I try to use all different types of literature to keep all students involved. #122edchat
A3: In a unique environment currently, but in the past, we have used SEL/Second Step lessons to build bridges between cultures. Students were able to share what makes them unique, and answer questions from others. A safe environment is helpful for this. #122edchat
A3: We did a great activity at the beginning of this year where Ss researched a scientist or engineer that shared their ethnicity / culture. They felt an immediate connection to the content which hooked them into my class for the rest of the year! #122edchat
A3. When I was a high school vice principal, our leadership students created a multi cultural rally that allowed student groups to perform and share their culture with the entire school. It was an amazing way to get everyone excited about different cultures. #122edchat#BeTheOne
A2: The best way to keep students engaged is to keep each activity to around 15 minutes. It is not always possible to do this, but when you can, it works best. Teens usually can attune well to something for around 1 min. per year of their age. #122edchat
A2: I once had a student who was very hyperactive, always needed to be moving. I allowed him to walk to the other side of the room to "get a letter" for a word he was spelling in his paper he was working on. It kept him on track and focused. #122edchat
A3: Right off the bat, pronounce names correctly, because it MATTERS! & Constantly ask Ss about themselves! You can learn so much from a 2 minute conversation! & Read about it. I have a S from Nepal.. & did some research so I could ask her more about it! #122edchat
A3: Find literature that represents many different cultures. Asking kids about their cultures and showing genuine interest is also important. #122edchat
A3 Celebrate diversity by learning and celebrating each and every student. Their story, culture, family are important. Overhauling my books to study more diversity and choice. Every story matters. Bring in empathy, support, love to build community. Lifelong learning. #122edchat
A3: Diversity in Maine is not as easy to discuss, as there really isn't much. We have been using #googleexpeditions to virtually transport our Ss to different countries & cultures, so that they can better understand the world outside of their small town. #122edchat
A3: Diversity is celebrated through student voice and choice not just on a technology but on topics and methods. Student passions often connect to their heritage and culture.
#122edchat
A3.2- Also, I have found that all stakeholders have different strengths and weaknesses, so allowing students and staff to lead when the focus is on their strength can build capacity and respect for each other. #122edchat
A3) I’m so thrilled to share I have the most amazing crew and they are leading an international night with over 20 countries represented. Families will be setting displays and sharing food/culture #122edchat
A3: In science class, we talk inclusion and how everyone can be successful because we were born to ask questions. I know this isn't a typical answer to this question. Definitely an area for growth on my part. #122edchat
A3 With so many diverse students, it is pretty easy to make a point to celebrate our differences and similarities. My students embrace each other for their differences. #122edchat
A3 be vulnerable and model what celebrating diversity looks like. I often spoke about being mixed race and how that impacts both how the world sees me and I see the world. Race and class should not be scary topics, but rather celebrated as opportunities to learn #122edchat
A2: If students are not engaged, they are not learning. All lessons need to have a “hook” and engagement, and that’s something we look for when doing walkthroughs. We always tell teachers to make it relevant to the students. #122edchat
We run something similar with @Simmonsknights1. Transformational experience for everyone. Love getting to stop by the lunchroom to say hi to the Life Skills kids, as well. #122edchat
A3) We all have different stories, right. We are celebrate and adhere to our cultural background a little differently. And we have more in common than not. This is how I make sure we are all connected in class. #122edchat
A3: @CaldwellElemen has a very diverse Ss population racially and socioeconomically and I think most of our Ts do a good job with that. I have Ss who only speak Spanish and ones who only speak Haitian-Creole so I added books to my class library in those languages #122edchat
✨TAKE A CHANCE ON CHOICE! Students are more engaged with their learning, and often go above and beyond when they have choice! It’s a win-win! #122edchat✨
A3b: Google Tour Builder, Street View, Treks, Expeditions, MyMaps and more all give my rural Ss windows into the world. @Flipgrid gives them another avenue to talk with ppl from anywhere!
#122edchat
Yes girl. If your students are off task in your class -- that's on YOU! Your lesson isn't engaging to them. Find a way to embrace their passions into your lessons. #122edchat
A3 Try and have artifacts, pictures, items from different cultures and families to be able to celebrate your diversity and be inclusive. Live and walk the talk. Promote self-acceptance and love. #122edchat
#122edchat A2 Create a classroom that looks to Ss being future ready, lessons that link to the real world. Knowing your Ss. Believing in your students and using the https://t.co/YW6fKaEjrG lessons to give them an audience and a voice out in the world.
A3:I had an activity where we stood in a circle, there were statements made and if it applied to us, we would step into the circle. It was interesting to see which questions applied to who, and it was also a great way to show that we're not alone in what we go through #122edchat
A3 My students come from many different cultures, they love to share their cultural celebrations with us, and we also celebrate Canadian cultural celebrations too 😀 #122edchat
A3 #122edchat I love starting the year off with a project that celebrates their heritage and cultural customs they follow at home. It ties in perfect with #read180 wkshp 1 & I learn so much about who is sitting in front of me! Those posters decorate our room them for Trimester1
A3 One impactful unit is when Ss write essays about their intersecting identities based on their own Qs—e.g. What does it mean to be a girl in the age of #metoo? What does it mean to be biracial in my neighborhood? What does it mean to be nonbinary in my family? #122edchat
A3: I loved writing problem situations (math class) based upon interests of students. It is a great way to reach one that normally doesn’t open up. #122edchat
A3. We have a multitude of cultures in our group, so we celebrate each Ss for who they are and their successes and whatever they bring into the classroom! #122edchat
A3- Celebrate diversity within the class by reading stories and novels with characters that look like my students!!! Students have told me reading @kwamealexander 's books opened up a new love of literature and poetry. #122edchat
Lynn! Another preservice teacher in the house! Happy to be learning along with you! Check out @MsJachymiak and @MissKasprzak...both preservice and doing amazing things! #122edchat
In reply to
@lynnkdewall, @MsJachymiak, @MissKasprzak
A3: We embrace one another! We spend a lot of time in the beginning of the year getting to know one another. We also enjoy connecting globally with other classrooms via @Skype and @Flipgrid. 👍🏻 #122edchat
A4: An area I think we are all continually growing in. The main way that I try to provide for my students is to be PRESENT for my students. Let them know that they have someone in their corner who will back them up. #122edchat
A4. I make sure that I am listening to my Ts and Ss. We must be making decisions based on kids and their needs. Listening to their concerns and their needs must be the priority. Where there is a will, there is a way. #122edchat#BeTheOne
A4: Advocate for them no matter what. Never assume that someone else will ask the hard questions, do what's best for them, take care of them, etc. Be that person. #betheone#122edchat
A4: Gotta know your students, gotta try different methods to reach them where they are at. Starts with differentiation. If this fails, reach out to others on your team or support personnel to help students find success. Sometimes you have to fight for the win. #122edchat
A3:
We celebrate diversity by celebrating each other. I build trust, so Ss will open up. We create and atmosphere of--"Hey, that's cool, here's how we ______" (celebrate, worship--I am in the Bible Belt--etc.) I also use activities and scripts that celebrate diversity. #122edchat
#122edchat A3 Not sure where to start best to recommend people take a look at my classroom at https://t.co/d5D0dcp6OW I teach about the world with the world.
Our state is weird and tests students in science in 7th Grade. We are in NGSS (Love them!) but we have to teach all of the types of sciences in 6th and 7th to get them prepared. So I teach a little bit of it all! #122edchat
A4: I know my students learning and social emotional needs. I conference with them often to see how things are going. I support other teachers and offer to help with accommodating. #122edchat
A4- I'm lucky enough to Co-teach for 2 periods a day. Our students get great benefits from having 2 teachers in the room. We work very hard to meet all the needs in our classroom. you need to meet your students where they are at. That's how you meet their needs!! #122edchat
A3 We don’t celebrate, we integrate it. Novels reflect diversity (#ALongWalkToWater is set in Sudan) & lack of diversity (#TheGiver is about Sameness/conformity). Early humans & ancient civilizations are about diversity. Ss share cultures/traditions & their travels too #122edchat
#122edchat Diversity of thought typically gets short-changed here. Ss of different races or from different backgrounds that think the same about the world vs. Ss of the same race and background who think very differently about the world. Careful about your assumptions!
A4: We are working towards an Individual Education Plan for all Ss in York. I feel that will really document the effort & needs of each individual students, so that we as educators are reminded that everyone is different and learn differently. #122edchat
A4: Constant formative assessment and feedback. Not for a grade but to build relationships and truly know students. Sure content is in their too, but it doesn't hurt to ask about students passions and interests either!
#122edchat
A4 It is hard to guarantee, but I first talk, listen to understand. I then advocate and use my energy and efforts to make it happen. I personalize as much as I can to best support kids. I encourage doing what it takes to respond to kids' needs. I never stop fighting. #122edchat
A4: my school uses the house system and I am blessed that my house leader @ESEteacherMegan is one of our inclusions specialists. She has been a wealth of knowledge and support for me (this being my 1st yr) #122edchat#HouseElMejor
Yup! Keeps us all on our toes. We just finished up chemical reactions and will be moving into cellular respiration and photosynthesis after Spring Break. #122edchat
A4 I listen and watch my students carefully to know what they need to be successful. Then I do my best to provide the support/environment/culture they need #122edchat
A4) wow! Great question. I am present, visible, involved with my sleeves up but constantly reflecting if everyone is getting everything they need and thinking how do I do better?#122edchat
A4 #122edchat I wish I had an answer 😥 It’s hard to get our ss everything & it’s frustrating to see how long a process takes. We help each other & remind each other that we’re doing everything we can. And just stay persistent in working together for our students. 💜
A4: Constant formative assessment and feedback. Not for a grade but to build relationships and truly know students. Sure content is in their too, but it doesn't hurt to ask about students passions and interests either!
#122edchat
As a history teacher too, I find that noticing the historical patterns throughout time helps kids see that nothing new is really going on... lends itself to problem solving and understanding the 'why' behind what people do (and do to each other). #122edchat
In reply to
@MrPStrunk, @misskoplin, @MathWithMsHawes, @ToddRisser, @ERobbPrincipal
#122edchat A4: Typically Ss will act out either provocatively or by withdrawing if they aren't getting the services they need. I just need to pay attention and do NOT ignore these signs, even if they don't inconvenience me at the moment. There's "empathy" from Q1!
A4:
I remain in constant communication with the counselors, the content teachers, parents, SPED teachers, school psychologist, and most importantly--THE STUDENTS! They'll let me know if they need something, and I follow up! #122edchat
A5- Leaders must be supportive, flexible, and open to diverse viewpoints. Leaders don’t always have to respond. Sometimes listening closely is the best way to lead. #122edchat
A4 This may sound basic, but really read IEPs in depth! It’s just so important to not have a “check the box” mentality with Ss who need extra supports. Really dive deep in why that Ss needs a particular support and where synergies may be present in your whole class #122edchat
A1: You HAVE to model - especially with "littles." Day #1 - my students learned that we are all family, and no one shall be embarrassed. We also come to the understanding that we learn more from mistakes than we do correct answers. #122edchat
A5. Servant leadership is a great to show that the leader is selfless and leading for the right reasons. Leaders must continue to show their heart and maintain their why. Modeling the entire time. #122edchat#BeTheOne
A5- I know that I thrive under a leadership style that is truly collaborative. I like when the leader is not afraid to make the difficult decision and do what has to be done. I enjoy someone who is approachable and understands the value of family in and out of school. #122edchat
A4: Sadly, we can't "guarantee" students are getting all the services they need, but we can feverishly listen, learn and advocate for them day after day, and then work on self-advocacy skills with them to use in the future. #122edchat
A4) Teaching SPED, I am always on the lookout for my kids needs. I notice if and when service providers are missing. If we have denied our library time, music, etc. I am on it. I have fewer kids, yes. I keep on trying. #122edchat
A4: Ask the students how it is going, and if they think a new modification would be helpful if you see them struggling. Communication with the kids and their parents is important. Other teachers are valuable resources--esp. if the child is doing better in their course. #122edchat
A5 It is all about collaborative leadership. We need a leader who supports, encourages, leads, celebrates & moves mountains. We also need one who listens, who collaborates, who works alongside us. We need to lead with heart, all the time. Make the impossible possible. #122edchat
A5: This is a good question as we are about to have our 3rd Superintendent in three years up here in York, Maine. I think good leadership is clear, fair, understanding & driven. They also expect the same of their colleagues. #122edchat
A5: Collaborative and lead learner leadership. Working & and learning alongside leaders is far better than under them. Inspiration doesn't have to come from someone better or higher, just someone you admire.
#122edchat
A5: a great leader is willing to get in there and work with you - APs and Ps who will model a lesson or do a read-aloud for your class (I'm looking at you @KateAshmore & @Iluvcaldwell ) 😁😁😊😎 #122edchat
A5) a leader with vision who is transparent, authentic, vulnerable, supportive, a listener, present, visible, involved, learning, growing, modeling! #122edchat
A4: we talk about how each person learns and communicates differently. We all have strengths and weaknesses. We need to build on those weaknesses and celebrate our strengths. While we all practice each skill, I give them a choice how they show their learning. #122edchat
#122edchat A5: Empowerment and feedback. When I know that you've given me something important to do, entrusted me to do it my way, and give me feedback on how I'm doing......I know I'm valued and I matter. And I will go through walls for you.
I don't think I'm unique in that.
✨A4: TEAMWORK! I work with a talented group of educators and am lucky enough to co-teach also! We have team plan each day where we communicate and collaborate to ensure students are getting the services they need!✨#122edchat
A5: From what I've seen/experienced, someone who has high expectations but is also understanding, respectful, and empathetic. Someone who accepts and challenges failure in order to strive for hope and success. #122edchat
As far as diversity, there is a lot you can connect with the diversity in the natural world. You can talk about how nature is wonderful because of the diversity---just like with people in the community/school/world at large. #122edchat
A3: Being on the border all our students are Hispanic. We do celebrate 16 de Septiembre, Cinco de Mayo and Día de los Muertos which are Mexican holidays. Our students and staff dress up and then teachers tie activities to their lessons. #122edchat
#122edchat Empathy is recognizing your behavior + underlying emotions in other creatures. We've all felt fear, joy, anger, love, the urge to violence, pride, shame.
What do you think that person is feeling when he acts that way? What are YOU feeling when you act that way?
#122edchat A5 A Leadership that communicates, they have a vision, they are passionate about the students & their learning direction, they are curious about what the world has to offer and they never judge or pigeon hole the socio economic make up of the school or cohort.
#122edchat Thanks for letting me participate tonight. I love everything you all are doing. Hope you all can join me in 16 minutes for #BeTheOne chat. Book is also now available: https://t.co/bA28pCGFYS
A5: Tough question...I believe a strong leader listens, ask questions, and takes others' feedback to heart. People may not like their decisions, but they will understand and respect them. #122edchat
A5 Students (and teachers) are more likely to work to their fullest potential when they know the person in a leadership role sees and understands them. That’s one of many reasons diversity in leadership is important. #122edchat
A5. A leadership which allows for workers to take risks, use their voice, and choice along with their individual unique talents that they bring to the table in learning! #122edchat
*whew* that was challenging on the phone in the car, but I think I answred all the questions! (Sorry for the typos!)
And perfect timing, we're almost to the pizza place
#122edchat
A5) I would guess, most would rather work under a leadership style that leads, values their team, does not just manage, and lets them be who they are. #122edchat
Great opportunity to grow you PLN. Think about following anyone who said anything you found interesting or "liked." Remember, you can always unfollow later if they make you regret it! :) #122edchat
A3: Leadership styles that allow teachers to collaborate, take risks, and be creative are the best. Micromanaging is counter-productive and stifles growth. When people are afraid to take risks, they remain stagnant. #122edchat
I think great leadership comes by having the ability to empower others, making others feel welcome and safe. By being a leader, people are able to come to you with questions and do not feel that they will be judged for asking those questions. #122edchat
@MrsAtkus@RealMrsBentley thank you for this inspiring chat! You are all incredible. Keep being amazing, finish your week strong. Thanks for letting me chat with you! #122edchat
So vital! :-) "Good questions" used to scare me because I was afraid I wouldn't have an answer but now I crave them because they help me to grow. #122edchat

A5 #122edchat I think everyone has their own preferences on leadership in accordance to their personality traits. For myself, I work best & to my fullest potential for leaders who are approachable & make me feel comfortable. It gives me a desire to shine for them & the school.
Welcome to the BRAND NEW #TellYourStory chat! 30 minutes of real, honest, and heartfelt awesomeness all based after the book "Stories from Webb"
Let's start by introducing yourself in 6 words!
Remember to use the hashtag #TellYourStory
A4 A teacher is an advocate for others. I teach intervention & #gifted so different kids need different services & scaffolds. My job is to provide or find a provider for Ss needs. Plus I'm super annoying/pushy so it’s easier to give me what I want than to tell me “no” #122edchat
A5: One that celebrates the skills of those who they lead and trust that working together is the best option. #122edchat also Brent from Magrath AB saying hi.
A2: isn’t this the million dollar question? I think allowing them to choose their own learning path is one way to help. Also, allowing them ownership over seating and movement. When students know you empathize with them, they give their best. #122edchat
Thank you for joining us!! Oh and thank you for such a great book!! I'm going to start implementing some of the tools from your book after break. I will let you know how it goes!!! #122edchat
A5 Hire the best, expect the best. Don't micromanage, let high standards be consistent & known, hold us accountable, be a positive presence in classrooms. Evaluate to help us improve not to punish. Don’t give tenure just cuz it’s 1st day of 3rd year; We need to earn it #122edchat
A4: I ask them what they need. Then, I speak to their parents, the school counselor, and administrators about local organizations that provide the services requested. SEL needs are critical.

@MrsAtkus@RealMrsBentley thank you for this inspiring chat! You are all incredible. Keep being amazing, finish your week strong. Thanks for letting me chat with you! #122edchat
But it's also on us to maintain that too. I do not believe that 'being on our best behavior until we get tenure" is cool or fari to our colleagues and kids. #122edchat
A3: We read both fiction and nonfiction texts as well as watch videos about the life of people from various backgrounds. This semester I am going to invite guest speakers to share their story.
#122edchat
A1: Late as always :) We are involved with the Partnership for Resilience and our District has promoted the use of trauma informed practices. Both of these have had a positive impact on building empathy and understanding. #122edchat
I teach an Tier 2 intervention class so I need to be on the lookout for when these kids might need 'more'. When they do need more, sadly it is a long process but I am fortunate that I have a great counseling and SpEd team that try to hasten processes. #122edchat
Just FYI, if you know someone looking to join a great group of Ts (and me), we are looking for Science, Theology, & English Ts at Marian Catholic #122edchat
A1: I talk about to them about various issues going on and have an in-depth conversation about the struggles that people face. Then, we read text that dive deeper and provide insight.
#122edchat
Very happy that you do, Noel. It is a gift to us and to your students. You should have them join us live next week for #122edchat. We have the #rowvastrong crew leading for us. Student-generated Qs! #betheone
I'll be promoting #122edchat later tonight...or tomorrow. Just got word from @tsuejohnson that the Qs are done and LEGIT! Would love to have your Ss voice in the chat! #BeTheOne
