-
-
This is Kitty in California
-
-
Hi Kitty! Always great to have you here at !
-
Tidbit: The 6 core principles that Ali adhered to are: Confidence; Conviction; Dedication; Giving; Respect; Spirituality
-
-
Q1: What is your favorite memory of Muhammad Ali?
-
-
Q1: What is your favorite memory of Muhammad Ali?
-
A1. Since I actually haven't seen much of Ali. I have seen that interview where he said his famous "Float Like a Butterfliy"
-
A1: He was unapologetically Black.
-
A1: Any moment when he stood up against injustice whether it was in the U.S. or abroad
-
A1 He taught me about the courage it takes to stick to one's convictions, led me to build a conscientious objector file.
-
-
Ali also refused to back down from his beliefs, even after losing his title and forbidden to fight for 3 yrs.Never Back Down.
-
-
-
Oh...by the way: I'm Marcy, teacher, from CT.
-
A1 "My conscience won't let me go shoot my brother or some poor hungry people..Shoot them for what?..Just take me to jail"
-
Yup!! Good thing to always remember and what a role model he was with this belief!

-
-
Forgot my intro: Thoas Mision, PreserviceT College Student from MN
-
-
Love it! He was such an influence in this aspect.
-
Since I dont follow sports much, is there as much conviction from present sports figures despite danger of losing spotlite?
-
-
-
Always great to have you here!
-
-
Thank you! I'm usually asleep at this time. LOL! Good to be participating this evening. :)
-
Glad to have you tapping into YOUR resilience. ;)
-
Q2: Muhammad Ali was great in many ways. What way stands out the most for you and why?
-
-
-
DEFINITELY!!!! He's our man!!!
-
A2: That he stood up for his faith.
-
Thank you. I appreciate you offering and leading . Offers a positive start to my week.
-
WHOA! Just read a bit of what you sent. So sorry to hear about this. The Arts is SO impt in education!!!
-
-
And unapologetically Muslim.
-
A2: The fact that Ali used his platform as an athlete as a vehicle for addressing social injustice at home and abroad.
-
I would say some athletes who have come out as LGBT were taking a pretty huge risk.
-
A2: I loved his confidence. He taught us that believing we are great is half the battle
-
And I so appreciate you finding us and joining in! We always have a great group here on and welcome Newbies!
-
Yeah, was surprised too HS Theater is a HUGE part of my old HS,dunno why this is happening suddenly
-
I was thinking the exact same thing. Also athletes speaking out re: concussions and head injuries
-
-
A2 For me, it was the willingness to live by his convictions whatever others might think.
-
A2: He was a man who possessed immense courage.
-
-
Matt, Hist Ts, SoCal...so many great memories, but '96 Ali lighting the Olympic torch... Strength, courage, defiance, heart
-
Anyway back to chat. A2. He was an indomitable figure, to the point that even I know& respect him despite not following Bxng
-
YES!!! This was a great moment!!! Good to have you here at , Matt!
-
-
Now to get at a question directed at Ali and resilience...
-
Q3: Muhammad Ali tapped his resilience in many ways. Can you ID some ways you saw him tap into his resilience?
-
A2: His swagger was sick!! He had lyrics, rhymes, & anecdotes that he used to celebrate himself! That's hot!
-
In doing so, he showed every1 he was more than just his Boxing skills. He was intelligent and wise
-
He had swagger before we even called it swagger!
-
-
...and with an incredible heart and sense of humor!
-
A3: Withstanding the wrath of White *and* Black people when he opposed the draft. Having to move to Canada.
-
Q2 Epitomized right of Black men internationally 2 speak up for rights & convictions. Was once best known person on planet
-
I'll look forward to seeing this!
-
-
Love that he was so well known and respected for more than boxing!
-
"No dumb jock over here" where was concerned. He was on the pulse of America's ugly. https://t.co/Q1pnogFf7V
-
-
In doing so, he showed every1 he was more than just his Boxing skills. He was intelligent and wise
-
A3. His long battle w/ Parkinson's for 30+ yrs. He never gave up
-
Yes, he was a great role model for all with health challenges.
-
A3 Just learning to box takes more resilience than I have; let alone all the other stuff he did!!
-
DITTO!!! I couldn't agree more!!
-
Exactly!! His showmanship was bar none! He knew he was the greatest. He felt that deep down in him! https://t.co/wWVnMFA63j
-
-
He had swagger before we even called it swagger!
-
A3. As well, despite losing evrything after his conscientious objection,he kept going, spoke out more. Made himself heard
-
-
-
YES!! I loved this and it was kept such a secret until the very end.
-
Q4: Have you talked about Ali's life and passing in your school, class or among your friends? How or what was said?
-
Q4--a variation: Did you or your class do anything special after hearing about Muhammad Ali's passing?
-
He realized that he had a narrative that SHOULD NOT be thrown away.So he spoke. Thats resilience rite there
-
A4: Not really. On the other hand, a lot amongst my family. There are many collective memories amongst us re: .
-
Giving voice,
especially if unpopular, is a true tapping of one's resilience!
-
A4--variation: No to this as well.
-
-
A4. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do anything w/ the class. Mite try nxt school yr
-
A4 I posted a longer version of the quote on my facebook page & it was shared 54 times. And w/some SS as example of ldrship.
-
A1: He taught me to stand up for your beliefs. Be strong in your convictions. Never be ashamed to stand up for your rights.
-
A4: ,2 other colleagues, & I began co-planning lessons via a group chat straightaway!
-
A4: and I want to plan a special lesson so we are planning it now, didn't want to rush it
-
A4 My school is out and we had a health emergency in my family (now settling out okay), so... less attention than deserved.
-
A2: Be bold, Be brave. Be you! Always!
-
-
A3: He always remained true. He always took the high road.
-
Keep us posted on what you end up doing.
-
A4: I do want ss to understand that whatever career they choose, they should never forget to advocate for the less fortunate
-
-
It would be interesting because I bet some students don't know as much as they should about this great man.
-
-
-
-
-
My understanding was also incomplete @ the time, plus their last dy of school, so was busy
-
I love Jane Fonda, too, but Muhammed Ali also took a lot of mess from a lot of whites...
-
I think I could do my 10 min meeting w/ them on Ali now, tho. Now that I delvedmore in his ideas
-
-
-
Q5 coming up around the bend...
-
tbh tho, my bud's one of my more prog.friends, which was why the post surprised me
-
Q5: Ali identified 6 core principles that guided his life. What are some principles that you would say guide yours?
-
Always interesting to learn more about our friends, isn't it?
-
-
Understood. That can happen. I've probably done it to people myself. :-(
-
Ahh, I understand tho,he has a dislike for the Sports culture of US. Like me.
-
but it doesnt usually blind me XD
-
There's a reason I mostly follow women's sports, especially basketball.
-
A4: Sent an email to staff, but might use some inspiration to open the year.
-
Yes, there is an "underbelly" to the sports culture but there are also good points.
-
A5. I usually live by "Great Power There Must Also Come Great Responsibilities"
-
Glad to hear you follow women't sports! More people should!
-
-
A5: honesty, integrity, compassion, understanding, justice.
-
Great principles to live by!
-
A5 And Great Power = Great Power to control how we act/react towards the world(Ppl, included).Thats our great responsibility
-
Spider-Man reference ftw! XD
-
Yes. I am delving more and more into the distinction b/t reacting and responding.
-
A5. Also that opening your mind to understand others can lead to freedom of others from bigotry
-
It's not easy but it's worth it. Justice is the hard one. Not everyone you meet feels the same.
-
A5 I try to make respect/love drive everything I do - believe each person is unique/special, but no better than anyone else.
-
Q6: Do you have any favorite quotes from Muhammad Ali?
-
TOUCHE! I am right there with you in your principles.
-
That's an understatement! ;)
-
A5: Loyalty, dependability, commitment, dedication, courage...
-
All so very admirable and important!
-
Thank you for sharing this.
-
A6. Ali's reasoning w/ his refusal to fight in Vietnam. Coming from a former Spanish/US territory, i connected w/his words
-
Q6: Any favorite quotes of Ali's?
-
A6 "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth."
-
Yes, I love this quote and will be using a lot!
-
Thank you. What are yours?
-
Im from Philippines, for further clarification
-
A6 I remember this from growing up: "Cassius Clay is a name that white people gave to my slave master..." Loved resistance.
-
I came across this quote today while planning a stewardship campaign. Love it!
-
A5 Loyalty, love, hard work, resistance, recognizing value of historic & economic knowledge, appreciating people in the moment
-
love, compassion, service, respect, beauty, and resilience--of course ;)
-
A6: “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.”
-
Q7: What will you do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
As a country whose history was robbed/raped by Spain & then robbed of autonomy by US, his words on Vietnam rings even today
-
-
A7 I'll be happy I made it, & for the support found here. I'll be thinking about finding the courage of one's convictions.
-
I'll try to do something for nxt year about Ali. Might take a couple of days to do in-class,but worth trying
-
A7: Stand more firmly in my convictions.
-
Thanks so much to all for participating in tonight! Great chat! You are all great champions!
-
Thank you, and everyone on . Glad I stayed up for this. Be well, everyone!
-
A7: I will make the phone call that I am terrified to make.
-
