#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
Classroom Management is a way to ensure that all children are participating in an active listening, respectful manner that doesn't interfere with other learners. Respect, expectations, and appropriate outcomes for all #urbanedchat
A1: Classroom management is how one controls the classroom as well as their organization. Essentials are routines and everything having a place. #UrbanEdChat
A1: Classroom management is getting to know what kind of learners you have in the room through developing one on one relationships, experiences and comfort boundary pushing opportunities #urbanedchat
A1: Take time to build those authentic relationships and set procedures. When you do this and involve the kids in it, they will have ownership and there will be little disruption. #UrbanEdChat
A1 I think an important starting place is being reflective about your views/assumptions about children, since that will shape the kinds of routines and procedures you put into place/the opportunities you give children in your classroom. #urbanedchat
A1 I think it can have several definitions from different stakeholders...I would say managing time, resources, and discipline in a way that helps you to connect with every student everyday #UrbanEdChat
A1 - creating a classroom that's safe and conducive to learning. underrated part of classroom management plans is Ts asking themselves how their lesson will intellectually engage ALL of theirs Ss so management isn't necessary
#urbanedchat
A1) Classroom Management is managing Ss to ensure active learning is taken place. The essential piece to classroom management is generating an engaging lesson plan to be conducive for all learners.#UrbanEdChat
A1: Classroom management is about knowing your students and knowing how much they can take on at a time. If you try to give them too much at once they may not respond well. #urbanedchat
A1.1 Essential parts could be recognizing the diverse backgrounds of Ss, the resources needed, structure for communication, and daily goals #UrbanEdChat
A1: As someone who currently teaches classroom management, there’s an overhwhelig assumption that it is how you respond to “bad” behavior...which is by far NOT the case #UrbanEdChat

A1. Is is a group of mutual expectations between the teacher & Ss which serves as a framework of class behaviors. There must be some type collab in the development & there must be a plan to re-integrate students who receive exclusionary discp. #UrbanEdChat
A2: I listen A LOT. Students want to feel like they matter, have an essential role in the classroom, and be validated. I set high expectations and won’t let them give up. Also, I really try and get to know them and their interests outside of school. #UrbanEdChat
A1- Environement of the classroom/ school. Essential- relationships, predictability, and a lack of rules. Much prefer a concrete, short set of guidelines developed with all in the class, explained and agreed upon.
#UrbanEdChat
A2: my school uses an Advisory model, where each student completes an individual learning plan. The plan is reviewed by all of the Advisors that student will see that trimester. Knowing our Ss strengths/weakness helps us manage our class and interactions #urbanedchat

A2- Respect. Boundaries. A shared sense of purpose. Mutual cooperation. A sense of discover. An atmosphere where failure is OK and part of the process. #UrbanEdChat
A2: Building a relationship with students stems from taking time to learn about each one of them. Knowing them as individuals is important and will make them trust you more and will make them want to communicate/ engage with you. #urbanedchat
A2. The ability to separate the negative behavior from the Student as a person. & being able to give Ss a clean slate after they have served their consequence. Ability to teach correct behaviors. Genuine interest in Ss. #UrbanEdChat
Kids need a voice and a chance to explain when things are going wrong. I always tell them we can talk after class, and if they don't come to me I stop them so we can figure it out. #urbanedchat
A2) As an educator with a strong relationship can have that hard to reach Ss excel. Also, you are able recognize if that Ss is having a bad day from their body language as they walk in the door.#UrbanEdChat
A3: culturally responsive classrooms means understanding all of the various layers the students bring with them. Helping students navigate those layers is one of many parts of then managing the classroom. #urbanedchat
A2. The ability to separate the negative behavior from the Student as a person. & being able to give Ss a clean slate after they have served their consequence. Ability to teach correct behaviors. Genuine interest in Ss. #UrbanEdChat
#urbanedchat I also think it is important that if you correct or redirect a child that you find an opportunity to give them positive feedback so that they know you care about them and it is not just getting on their case!
A2 - honesty and authenticity are key. its hard to get anywhere without students knowing that the teacher has their best interests in mind
#urbanedchat#edchat@UrbanEdChat
So true. There is no fooling children when it comes to that. I see that the teachers in my school who struggle with management are the ones who do not seem genuine to me. #urbanedchat
A4: Ss develop individual projects based on their interest. Each has an Advisor to help guide the overall process. CRCM allows Ss and Ts to make sure these projects include their perspective (culturally, racially, politically, etc... #urbanedchat
A3 - kiddos want to feel like you know about them, can connect with them, and that your interactions keep them in mind. knowledge about students and their culture is a big part of that
#urbanedchat
A4 By helping educators be aware and sensitive to social norms that exist in in our profession...In essence becoming self-aware and then adjusting for the better #UrbanEdChat
A3. Culture influences behavior. Some cultures value eye contact, some don’t, some value speaking loud to make a point, some don’t. We must know that all of our students do not conform to the middle class Anglo culture valued in school #UrbanEdChat
A3: Ss are not going to have respect for anything they cannot relate to and become agitated when their culture is continually passed over or made to feel inferior. They are going to be restless. #UrbanEdChat
In urban schools, there is so much going on, and it is important to remember that not all children have the same family support. Some kids may need more support. Some less, but they must all MATTER to you. #urbanedchat
I went to Catholic School where they focused more on the faith and family which was cool but not on culture at all. When "Roots" came out, it polarized everyone. The silence on the school bus the next day was deafening, even from the white Ss. No one would speak #UrbanEdChat
A4- passion projects. Start with interest connect it back into the content. We have had a lot of success with students with social justice projects they are passionate about and using the mechanics and content to make the project work. #UrbanEdChat
No doubt...I was just agreeing with you 🙌👏👊...We are in an important time in edu where race, economic background, and stereotypes determine what kind of instruction we are going to deliver and this cannot happen...#urbanedcchat#wokeed
#urbanedchat I had an African girl who would never answer me directly. It drove me crazy. Later, I started calling her by her American name at her request and we had a totally different interaction. Now she is one of my helpers!
A5: PT. 2 - navigate through their challenges in order to help them recognize they’ve been marginalized and how to change their mindset in order to not have it repeat itself. #urbanedchat
A6- those statistics support why big districts need to spend real money on recruitment programs as well as CR methods. Proud my district is moving that way, hard @JCPSDEP1#UrbanEdChat
A6: Most definitely! Ts may intentionally or unintentionally carry bias and may use it against Ss. This causes irreparable harm! Once this occurs, we have a hard time fixing it! #UrbanEdChat
A6: Ss need to see adults like them AND adults not like them. The world is a very large place with lots of people with different perspectives, lives and experiences. Ss need to see all of it to help them see beyond their current circumstances #urbanedchat
Respect does not have a color, so it is important for the white adult to respect and understand the child and the differences and similarities. Approach may be very different in different cultures. We need to learn it. #urbanedchat
Sometimes when i am in the hall, I want to yell at my colleagues. STOP! I have tuned you out b/c of the negative comments. Do you think the kids are listening? #urbanedchat
A6 Wow that's a huge disconnect! Sometimes we let stakeholders that are the most removed from the classroom have the biggest impact...We need to flip this! #UrbanEdChat
A7: I think alot of discussions about how we are different and the same is important, and how things like empathy, kindness, caring, respect have no color and should be modeled for the children. #urbanedchat
A7: Ss need to trust the adults around them. One thing I do as an Advisor in our 1:1 meetings is tell them I will be their biggest cheerleader and their harshest critic. I make sure I practice and demonstrate that in a way that helps them move their education further #urbanedchat
A7:CRM demonstrates to Ss that Ts care enough about them to get to know them, care enough about equity and https://t.co/IMg4y8geUu also need to trust that the Ts will not be biased and will listen first without judgement and provide a safe place for them. #UrbanEdChat
A6. This is to avoid uninformed classroom practices which may have an adverse impact on Ss. Ie not including diverse cultures in the lesson, over-identifying Ss for Sped, not GT, over id-ing Ss for exclusionary discipline #UrbanEdChat
A7 Because they will be educated...We expect Ss to fit in our box of what we believe instruction and discipline are...Instead of recognizing how important culture, background, and economic level affect daily lives of Ss #UrbanEdChat
A7 We talk a lot in this arena about the importance of "knowing your students"-and I agree-but I've also been thinking about how we make this doable for Ts, even starting during their prep programs. (1 of 2) #urbanedchat
We have to sell the importance of teaching...When do we ever say teaching is a great profession! How many examples do they have to look up to? #urbanedchat
(2 of 2) HOW do we get to know children to this level that we are equipped to be "culturally responsive"? The phrase even is huge! It's a big question and it's a different answer depending on context, cultures involved, community ethos/dynamics, and so much more. #urbanedchat
A8 One small piece at a time. :) Something to watch maybe, or something to read, or something to observe in another class (etc.) that introduces new ideas into their psyche for further contemplation. #urbanedchat
Hey #UrbanEdChat Join us in historic #Newark#NJ for teacher led collaborative workshop sessions, teaching, learning and sharing amongst educators! NOT ur usual PD, we are run By teachers For teachers!!! https://t.co/CvOG5XCEbU#gonnabelit
A7. It breaks down the unknown or stereotypes between cultures for both teachers & Ss. Once they know & understand & respect each culture, they realize that we have more in common than not. Actually caring about Ss transcends cultural differences #UrbanEdChat
So hard! Because people don' t get it and get defensive. You have to be self-reflective to receive it well, and I am not sure teachers are the best receivers of feedback without getting defensive #urbanedchat
A8: Ts need to take time to get to know their students and the various layers they bring. I would even suggest that in lieu of content b/c Ss won’t make progress if they aren’t understood. Ss are resilient enough to step up to the work. #urbanedchat
oh golly gosh gee! I hope I remember b/c this is a fav topic of mine. Changes behavior and increases engagement. Not Bored=better classroom management.
Thank for the chat! #urbanedchat
