Robert Ortiz, OL Coach, Murrieta Valley HS in Murrieta, CA! Have the week off from summer ball to celebrate the 4th, but looking forward to another fantastic season! Glad to be back on here! As always, your favorite coach’s favorite coach. Let’s do this #HogFBChat
Happy to have the week off, but chomping at the bit to get back on the field. Pushing for a third straight undefeated Southwestern League championship😈 #AndStill#HogFBChat
Lisa Limper, Nashville TN. Representing football coaches everywhere by working at the fireworks stand (or is that just a TN Coach thing?) QBs and operations #TeamFreeAgent#Hogfbchat
Tyler Brock. WRs coach @ Cleveland Central HS. Finally down in C-Land full time. Loving the new staff I’m on. Finally around some real football coaches. Already learning a lot. #Hogfbchat
A1: I think it changes a little with each group. This year I'm going to have them over on Mondays for some pizza and to watch some.monday night football. Bonding doesn't have to be expensive, just let them know you care about them #hogfbchat
A1: I like to feel the group out. But generally I will keep it similar. We just get to know each other, we build trust and cohesiveness by being open with one another. #hogfbchat
A1: with this being my first year coaching I’m trying to set up a strong bond with my players. Set the expectations and create trust among the group #Hogfbchat
I am always changing how I bond year in and year out because I am never with the same players. Which does make it hard, while trying to learn who they are as a person. #HogfbChat
A1. Depends on the group. Depends on the circumstances. This will be my 1st year taking the OL over so I have some things I want to implement. Build the family. Make them understand how much they are needed.#hogfbchat
#Hogfbchat A1 the role of underappreciated protectors will always galvanize our relationships. Desire to take pride in being the most technically sound group is big as well. And yes, we eat together a lot.
A1- each year is different. Now if the group stays the same, then maybe for 2 years (I will start 5 juniors this year) but one group might like paintball, one might like food, etc! #hogfbchat
A1: I start in Feb w/offseason training. At that time I get a feel for the group dynamic, then go from there. By this time of yr things are jelled. Just last week my guys were asking for an OLine Dinner - we usually start game wk 1. A GREAT sign!⚒️🍗⚒️ #Hogfbchat
A1: biggest thing this year is recognizing the group as much as possible. Hawgs getting gear, new game/weekly awards, searching for a flag, etc. Trench work deserves recognition. Recognition together hopefully brings bonding. #hogfbchat
A1: Working with a new group of kids. Getting use to each other. I will implement unit building activities that will help us gel. It is important that our kids sell out for each other in order to sustain success. We have great kids at Shawnee. I am excited! #hogfbchat
A1) Bonding with your position group is all about being an example of good character. Be honest, be fair, be involved, and be prepared every day. #HogFbChat
https://t.co/EH7bSgocVF’s my first year with this OL so I’m trying to feel them out but the more I do we will set up some traditions that will carry over for the rest of my time there.I can’t afford to feed fat guys weekly but I can do T shirts once a year or something #hogfbchat
A1: There are certain things we carry over year to year because they work, and other things we changed based on the dynamics and needs of the group. #hogfbchat
A1: Building relationships is organic, not planned. Kinda like hanging out with your best friends: you have some fun trips you plan together or just some spontaneous get togethers, golf outings, eating out, etc. Pretty fluid in my book #hogfbchat
A1 When working with a new group it starts in the off season for me we do team building and group meals. Me and my guys go out to eat. We plan events to build the family. I also work with the juniors to become the senior leaders they need to be. It is a fun process.#Hogfbchat
Jake Wertz, OC/OL , Bay City HS - Blackcats nation. Checking all the from Pittsburgh, PA. Need more Hog chat and less NBA Warriors chat. Let’s get to learning! #Hogfbchat
A2: I usually work fight defenders in space by setting up a pulling circuit for power, and getting the LB to go different directions every time #Hogfbchat
A2: Best way to do it is live reps against a scout D or good on good. It’s hard to simulate when it isn’t live, but we can rep it as much as possible in our base zone/combo drills #HogFBChat
A2 I use a drill to work angles and attack the correct side of the defender. Depending on where the play is going. If my guys get there hands on them in space it is over to me it is a matter of the correct angel. Then dip and drive before contact. #Hogfbchat
A2: Pulling circuits working on having their eyes up, pulling around a corner. Eventually show a number and have them tell me it to test their eyes. #Hogfbchat
A2: For screens I like the cage drill. Strike a DL, run to an area roughly 8 yfs down field and block a defender in a 10x10 box. For run game, I use drills that reinforce "go where he's going, not where he's at". #Hogfbchat
A2: I have a few. I like combo blocks to backers, allowing a feel for taking the proper angle. I also like half line “screen drill”. It allows OL to get a feel for getting up field on a screen and attacking “better athletes” in space. #hogfbchat
A1: Each group of kids is a bit different then the years prior. Have to learn the dynamics of each group. All organic, but new leaders of groups, new kids means new breakfast foods, new places to eat, new chants. Same film times though 😎 #Hogfbchat
A2 - we don’t do a particular drill, but my favorite is our double screen game, which I release them all and have them practice finding someone to hit. Practice it a lot, helps them find work. Aim for the inside number, chase to the sideline and FINISH #HogfbChat
A2 I like working double teams to the second level. The uncovered lineman releases to the second level to a defender. Gives us a chance to teach angles and hand placement. If we can work live reps against the D that'd be a bonus #HogFbChat
A2. Set up the old 5 yard box drill. Make a 5 yard square with cones. OL heels on one end a defender on the other end. Block him out of the square. #hogfbchat
A2: Have to get as many live reps as we can. It’s really difficult to drill space blocking. Non live tends to lead to bad habits in my opinion. But I do love working a pill and trap drill break down and be under control. #hogfbchat
A2: Depends on specifics, but I would say get them to work to a second level defender and practice cutting off and then striking a driving while on the move. #Hogfbchat
A2 I teach my pullers to kick out head inside for the first puller then second puller hit the alley way by following guards hips if backside see hips if leads inside and the hips swing out the backside guard follows outside. Work it during live or one on ones. #Hogfbchat
A2: I'm 'working' on a new one, where my guys "set a FORCEFUL pick" on a 2nd level dude. To many times OL tries to smoke the dude and whiff. I want me OL to drop a level, get wide, and engage. Don't hunt for heads! #Hogfbchat
A1. With my LBs & D, we do some of the same things each season. Also have to stay flexible enough to read the group & see what interests them. #Hogfbchat
A2.Ok so maybe I’m weird. I drill pulls to hug the Double and block what is there. I don’t drill blocking defenders out in space. We block what crosses us or what we take our down man into. I think that’s what ur askin? #hogfbchat
A2: Another fave is not so much a drill, but a concept I stole - ABCs of blocking. Attack, Buzz, Contact, Drive, Extend. Progression of drills that we used with all positions. Made ALL players better blockers in space. Worked a circuit 2 days/week. #hogfbchat
A2: We work a lot of combos to backers, which I love for blocking in space. Preach heavily that you HAVE to think about where he’s going, not where he is. Combo work to backers is typically our space drill. #Hogfbchat
We set up a grid with multiple lines, 2 step and fit, then add movement. Then back them up and add a 5 yard sprint to fit, then add movement again. #hogfbchat
A3: respecting each other. You don’t have to like someone to work well with them, however it’s hard to work together if you don’t respect each other. Some people that really like each other find it difficult to work together. #Hogfbchat
A3 the big thing for my guys is respect. Not everyone will get along but they must work as one unit. I don’t play individuals. If they want the spot light they are not the grinder I need or want #Hogfbchat
A3 - I want them to respect each other. Hold each other responsible for their actions. I hold my lineman to a higher standard not only on the field, but in the classroom and the community as well. It helps them respect each other. #hogfbchat
A3. I always tell my kids "you don't have to like each other, but you need to respect each other. Holds true for just about anything in life #hogfbchat
A3: I go one over And say trust.... You could be at each other's throats...not respect each other but still trust each other and get it done....then you see the others come along .... #Hogfbchat
A3: Respect. There will always be disagreements , but them respecting each other is huge for me. IMO , you play harder for people you respect, both fellow players and coaches .#HogFbChat
A3. Respect each other. I don't expect all the guys on the team to be best friends or heck even like each other. But if they respect each other and what they bring to the team that's bigger than getting along. #hogfbchat
A3 I want them to respect each other, I feel like them getting along will come with that. They need to be willing to work hard for one another and give it everything they have #HogFbChat
A3) However you need to manage their personalities so they play as one cohesive unit. They may not necessarily like each other but the OL coach’s job is to make the OL feel like a special group #HogFbChat
A3. I hope they do both. Respecting each other comes with healthy competition and mutual suffering :). Liking each other hopefully happens by our bonding events. Usually mine have always been both #hogfbchat
A3: All of the above and then some. I’d put trusting each other and ultimately being able to serve each other is just as important. Respect, Trust, serve each other. If you’re going to play this spot I feel like you have to be able to serve. #Mushroomsociety#Hogfbchat
A3: Must respect each other! Also they must love each other. I will hold our guys to the highest standard. We have to have Respect and Love for our brothers so we can be successful in the Classroom and on the field. No Respect or Love = No success. No accountability!#hogfbchat
A3) A major focus with all my Sophs is positive talk. No one likes to get yelled at after making a mistake that they already know they made. I plan on trying an idea i used in my LAX coaching this spring where after you positively criticize, you say "together we win". #Hogfbchat
A3: RESPECT is key but not just for the oline unit but in life Building an Oline culture brings being unselfish leaders We get lil credit for good things we do And alot of credit when things don't go right! As it should be embrace the oline culture it all comes with it #hogfbchat
A3: RESPECT is key but not just for the oline unit but in life Building an Oline culture brings being unselfish leaders We get lil credit for good things we do And alot of credit when things don't go right! As it should be embrace the oline culture it all comes with it #hogfbchat
A3: that’s a tough one. It’s hard to get 5 guys to just fall in love with each other. I would say getting along by game 1 but respect will eventually come later on the season with tough situations #hogfbchat
A2: Happy to share my Blocking ABCs with anyone who wants it. Wish I could remember who I stole the initial concept from, but it made a big difference in our total team blocking. Esp. special forces. #hogfbchat
A3: That’s tough. I’ve respected some people that I didn’t particularly get along with, but I’ve never liked anyone I didn’t respect. 🤔 I have to go with respect #hogfbchat
A3. I’ve always told teams I’ve coached that they don’t have to like each other (in fact they can hate each other’s guts) but they WILL respect each other. That part is non-negotiable. If they don’t like that then they can do something else. #hogfbchat
A3: Great question! Tough one, but I have to go with respect. I tell my guys: There may be times I don't like you much, but I will always love you. That love comes from my respect for guys willing...EAGER...to be protectors, to do the hard stuff every day. #hogfbchat
A4: One on ones, lifting competitions with each other, make everything a competition lol. Teach them to compete in everything to better themselves! #Hogfbchat
I am a huge fan of dividing up the offensive and dline and tire flipping. Then go into king of the hill one one tug of war. It creates competition and brotherhood. Then at the end we do a full oline and dline challenge make them all work together. #Hogfbchat
A4: I bring my guys to 7v7. We rep plays live against other teams, inside run and for pass pro. While lineman challenges are fun, I want my dudes to rep in game and on field stuff. I don’t care how many times they can flip a tire. I care how many times they can execute #hogfbchat
A4. Since we have three team work outs a week for six weeks before camp starts they are working and drilling things just like practice all summer long. #hogfbchat
A4 - Team Camps, weight room challenges (plank for time, freak week (bar as many times, squat 95 lbs as many times) then while at 7 on 7, we do 1 on 1 pass rush to help the QB’s simulate pressure ( either against us or against other teams if we are playing someone else #hogfbchat
A4: I like my guys to compete in EVERYTHING they do, weather that be in weights, conditioning, or even the classroom. Iron Sharpens Iron. When they compete with each other in everything the style of play rises. #hogfbchat
A4: Preach that everything they do should be a competition, harp outworking the guys around you, but the guys you’ll be seeing in the fall. Question I always ask is did we outwork (insert week 1 opponent name) today? Constantly working to improve lifts, everything. #Hogfbchat
A2. I like screen drills for working on blocking in space for OLinemen. Reps an important playin our offense and gets the work for blocking in space. #HogFbChat
A4: Competition should be bred in the weight room. That is something that will be preached any movement we will do will be competitive. You must have it. It will take time to establish #hogfbchat
A4: similar to many programs, break into Squads in summer. Squad leaders draft teams. Squads matched with one other each week. Compete daily. OL tend to make great squad leaders. Disappointed only got 3 OL squad leaders this summer. Hoping for 6. #hogfbchat
A3. I think they go hand in hand. I would much rather be respected then liked, but a team that gets along and likes each other tends to be a successful on in my experience. Cohesiveness is vital to an offensive line. ##HogFbChat
Agreed, Coach. Ours is already a high contact position. I am reluctant to beat them up too much in the summer. Sometimes, I'll even have the guys play 7-on-7 themselves in the summer. Why let the show horses have all the fun? Let the workhorses live the dream too! #hogfbchat
A4. We compete at everything!! Im a competitor and I hope it runs off to my guys. If we bend down to tie our shoes at the same time, it’s a race whether u know it or not lol. My guys usually pick up on that. #hogfbchat
A4) We have our Iron Man weight lifting and running competition at the end of the summer so every position group is competing over the summer to get bigger and stronger and get their names on the big board we hang up in the weight room once Iron Man is finished #HogFbChat
@mrscoachwertz and I are on vacation so I must get back to watching ESPN, the official network of LeBron James, with her. Let’s do this again... same time next week? #Hogfbchat
A3: One coach who really drills respect into his players is at @CoachShemby I was at a camp with him, and the way they got along was AWESOME! I asked one of his players to find him for me and 10 players went looking for him #hogfbchat
A4: Although, if you ARE looking for a sexy way to get some OL competition, come@to@Omaha for the @drimingtonOL@rimingtontrophy Camp. Check out this new addition for this year. Bet kids will compete for that! #hogfbchat
That's a wrap! Thank you all for participating tonight in the fastest hour on twitter! The appreciation can not even be expressed! #hogfbchat#AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo
A4 cont. speaking of lineman challenges though. My boys won the Greencastle Lineman Challenge in PA last week. Extremely proud of the work these guys are putting in. Can’t wait to see it on the field very soon! #HogFbChat
Only a few Mondays left to go! If anybody has questions or topics they want discussed on the #hogfbchat please do not hesitate to send me a DM with them!
We’d like to thank our official sponsor GameStrat! They provide teams with the most reliable and advanced sideline replay system. Check them out https://t.co/EJqjyFCYOr@GameStrat_#Hogfbchat
A1. Each year is different. Each group has their own personality. So far this offseason we have gotten together at my house, had a water slide, played madden, ate after practice, and watched some NBA games together. Good group #hogfbchat
A2. A lot of what we do in the flexbone is in space per say. We buy time and space off the ball by align. So 2nd level is in “space” lol. The best answer is have really athletic offensive linemen. I don’t know of a good drill, but live reps work best. #hogfbchat
A3. Heard a quote about guy/girl difference in coaching. “Guys have to battle to bond. Girls have to bond to battle”. My guys will respect each other through battle. Only the best stick and start. I want them to get along and respect one another. #hogfbchat
A2) I like working screen blocking- tunnel/rocket, tailback(slow screen)...work full speed. Set, strike w extension (sell block), release 1 inch depth down l.o.s. Work a “j” block by getting eyes to sternum of defender, and adjust angle low to high. Arrive in a coil. #HogFBChat
