Q1: How much will you change your year by year bonding with the OL? Keep it similar or change with each different group? #Hogfbchat
  • coachtbrock Jul 2 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A1. Not coaching the OL. But the best way for the big boys to bond is through their stomachs. #hogfbchat
  • CoachRmcD60 Jul 2 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A1 I think it has to change with the group you have some of your go tos but has to match the needs and wants of your kids #Hogfbchat

  • coach_remer Jul 2 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A1: I think it changes a little with each group. This year I'm going to have them over on Mondays for some pizza and to watch some.monday night football. Bonding doesn't have to be expensive, just let them know you care about them #hogfbchat
  • FISTFootball Jul 2 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A1: I like to feel the group out. But generally I will keep it similar. We just get to know each other, we build trust and cohesiveness by being open with one another. #hogfbchat
  • jakesnod Jul 2 @ 9:17 PM EDT
  • adammwilson Jul 2 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A1: you may have guys with different interests that change each year, but everyone loves and appreciates food. #Hogfbchat
  • Trench_CoachJJ Jul 2 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A1: with this being my first year coaching I’m trying to set up a strong bond with my players. Set the expectations and create trust among the group #Hogfbchat
  • coachrobertmori Jul 2 @ 9:17 PM EDT
I am always changing how I bond year in and year out because I am never with the same players. Which does make it hard, while trying to learn who they are as a person. #HogfbChat
    In reply to @CoachDingus
  • CoachOrtizOL Jul 2 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A1: Tight knit group honestly. We do need to do more off-field bonding, but already have stuff planned. #HogFBChat
  • PLesu07 Jul 2 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A1 Keep it the same. Its something that they’ll look forward to and take pride in. #Hogfbchat
  • Cnight_Ithaca Jul 2 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A1. Depends on the group. Depends on the circumstances. This will be my 1st year taking the OL over so I have some things I want to implement. Build the family. Make them understand how much they are needed.#hogfbchat
  • SparksOLine Jul 2 @ 9:18 PM EDT
#HogFBChat depends on the group. We really have used the weight room to bond this year. All of my guys are there everyday and lifting together.
    In reply to @CoachDingus
  • NickStro66 Jul 2 @ 9:19 PM EDT
The universal way to a lineman's heart is food. I'd like to change things up year by year, but food is a great way to go! #HogFbChat
  • jakesnod Jul 2 @ 9:19 PM EDT
#Hogfbchat A1 the role of underappreciated protectors will always galvanize our relationships. Desire to take pride in being the most technically sound group is big as well. And yes, we eat together a lot.

  • CoachSimard Jul 2 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A1: I start in Feb w/offseason training. At that time I get a feel for the group dynamic, then go from there. By this time of yr things are jelled. Just last week my guys were asking for an OLine Dinner - we usually start game wk 1. A GREAT sign!⚒️🍗⚒️ #Hogfbchat

I’m looking forward to sharing some meals with my guys before school starts. #HogFbChat
  • CoachTBau Jul 2 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A1: biggest thing this year is recognizing the group as much as possible. Hawgs getting gear, new game/weekly awards, searching for a flag, etc. Trench work deserves recognition. Recognition together hopefully brings bonding. #hogfbchat

A1 When working with a new group it starts in the off season for me we do team building and group meals. Me and my guys go out to eat. We plan events to build the family. I also work with the juniors to become the senior leaders they need to be. It is a fun process.#Hogfbchat
  • CoachShiffman - Moderator Jul 2 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Q2: When drilling your offensive line, what is your BEST drill for blocking defenders in space? #Hogfbchat
  • CoachWertz12 Jul 2 @ 9:25 PM EDT

  • coachrobertmori Jul 2 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A2: I usually work fight defenders in space by setting up a pulling circuit for power, and getting the LB to go different directions every time #Hogfbchat
    In reply to @CoachShiffman
  • CoachRmcD60 Jul 2 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A2 I easiest way to drill it is team looks or IS run where you can get some live action game reps #Hogfbchat
  • CoachOrtizOL Jul 2 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A2: Best way to do it is live reps against a scout D or good on good. It’s hard to simulate when it isn’t live, but we can rep it as much as possible in our base zone/combo drills #HogFBChat
  • MrMangoclass Jul 2 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A2 I use a drill to work angles and attack the correct side of the defender. Depending on where the play is going. If my guys get there hands on them in space it is over to me it is a matter of the correct angel. Then dip and drive before contact. #Hogfbchat
  • SenorBlazer Jul 2 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Also just here to remind everyone that @Warhogs56 has sweet hips. #Hogfbchat
  • jakesnod Jul 2 @ 9:27 PM EDT
#Hogfbchat A2 I'm all ears on this one.... or in this case, eyes.
  • CoachSilvernail Jul 2 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A2: Pulling circuits working on having their eyes up, pulling around a corner. Eventually show a number and have them tell me it to test their eyes. #Hogfbchat
  • coach_remer Jul 2 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A2: For screens I like the cage drill. Strike a DL, run to an area roughly 8 yfs down field and block a defender in a 10x10 box. For run game, I use drills that reinforce "go where he's going, not where he's at". #Hogfbchat
  • Warhogs56 Jul 2 @ 9:28 PM EDT
    #hogfbchat
    In reply to @SenorBlazer
  • Trench_CoachJJ Jul 2 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A2: A drill that drills angles is always helpful #hogfbchat
  • CoachOrtizOL Jul 2 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Can confirm @SenorBlazer, @Warhogs56 definitely has some “sweet hips” #HogFBChat
  • FISTFootball Jul 2 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A2: I have a few. I like combo blocks to backers, allowing a feel for taking the proper angle. I also like half line “screen drill”. It allows OL to get a feel for getting up field on a screen and attacking “better athletes” in space. #hogfbchat
  • coachtbrock Jul 2 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A2. Curious about the answers for this one. #hogfbchat
  • kenleybyrd Jul 2 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A2: I've always had success with a modified Inside Drill #Hogfbchat
  • CoachWertz12 Jul 2 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A1: Each group of kids is a bit different then the years prior. Have to learn the dynamics of each group. All organic, but new leaders of groups, new kids means new breakfast foods, new places to eat, new chants. Same film times though 😎 #Hogfbchat
  • CoachShemby Jul 2 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A2 - we don’t do a particular drill, but my favorite is our double screen game, which I release them all and have them practice finding someone to hit. Practice it a lot, helps them find work. Aim for the inside number, chase to the sideline and FINISH #HogfbChat
    In reply to @CoachShiffman
  • CoachRmcD60 Jul 2 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A2 we also do a lot of combo blocking both gaps and zone doubles #Hogfbchat
  • MrMasonBPS Jul 2 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A lot of reps in a short time. #hogfbchat
    In reply to @CoachShiffman
  • Warhogs56 Jul 2 @ 9:30 PM EDT
    There we go. #hogfbchat
    In reply to @SenorBlazer
  • NickStro66 Jul 2 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A2 I like working double teams to the second level. The uncovered lineman releases to the second level to a defender. Gives us a chance to teach angles and hand placement. If we can work live reps against the D that'd be a bonus #HogFbChat
  • SkinnyOLcoach Jul 2 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A2. Set up the old 5 yard box drill. Make a 5 yard square with cones. OL heels on one end a defender on the other end. Block him out of the square. #hogfbchat
  • CoachDingus - Moderator Jul 2 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A2: Have to get as many live reps as we can. It’s really difficult to drill space blocking. Non live tends to lead to bad habits in my opinion. But I do love working a pill and trap drill break down and be under control. #hogfbchat
  • adammwilson Jul 2 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A2: Depends on specifics, but I would say get them to work to a second level defender and practice cutting off and then striking a driving while on the move. #Hogfbchat
  • martinalvdly Jul 2 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A2: Pull Circuit on PVC chutes, combo drills on long chutes and rep rep rep!! #hogfbchat
  • MrMangoclass Jul 2 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A2 I teach my pullers to kick out head inside for the first puller then second puller hit the alley way by following guards hips if backside see hips if leads inside and the hips swing out the backside guard follows outside. Work it during live or one on ones. #Hogfbchat
  • CoachSimard Jul 2 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A2: I'm 'working' on a new one, where my guys "set a FORCEFUL pick" on a 2nd level dude. To many times OL tries to smoke the dude and whiff. I want me OL to drop a level, get wide, and engage. Don't hunt for heads! #Hogfbchat
  • CoachDingus - Moderator Jul 2 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Q3 is coming up soon! We are flying thru tonight Thank you all for being on the #hogfbchat We are all mastering our craft!
  • Skillutt28 Jul 2 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A1. With my LBs & D, we do some of the same things each season. Also have to stay flexible enough to read the group & see what interests them. #Hogfbchat
  • TheCoachDance Jul 2 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A2.Ok so maybe I’m weird. I drill pulls to hug the Double and block what is there. I don’t drill blocking defenders out in space. We block what crosses us or what we take our down man into. I think that’s what ur askin? #hogfbchat
  • MrMasonBPS Jul 2 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A2: Another fave is not so much a drill, but a concept I stole - ABCs of blocking. Attack, Buzz, Contact, Drive, Extend. Progression of drills that we used with all positions. Made ALL players better blockers in space. Worked a circuit 2 days/week. #hogfbchat
  • CoachWertz12 Jul 2 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A2: We work a lot of combos to backers, which I love for blocking in space. Preach heavily that you HAVE to think about where he’s going, not where he is. Combo work to backers is typically our space drill. #Hogfbchat
  • CoachBradyWalz Jul 2 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A2: Half-line wide zone vs defense. Full speed competition, full speed defenders = teaching of proper angles in space. Alex Gibbs-approved. #hogfbchat

  • MrMasonBPS Jul 2 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Late to the party today. Rob Mason Bellevue, NE Currently a free-agent, coaching-wise. So I guess this is the gif I'll go with... #hogfbchat

    In reply to @CoachShiffman, @BretBielema
  • jcheek57 Jul 2 @ 9:36 PM EDT
We set up a grid with multiple lines, 2 step and fit, then add movement. Then back them up and add a 5 yard sprint to fit, then add movement again. #hogfbchat
  • CoachOrtizOL Jul 2 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3 Those essentially go hand in hand. These guys have to mesh, regardless of anything else. #HogFBChat
  • coachrobertmori Jul 2 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3: I usually have a hard time in getting the whole OL to get along. So year in and year out that is my goal each season. #Hogfbchat
    In reply to @CoachDingus
  • adammwilson Jul 2 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3: respecting each other. You don’t have to like someone to work well with them, however it’s hard to work together if you don’t respect each other. Some people that really like each other find it difficult to work together. #Hogfbchat

A3 the big thing for my guys is respect. Not everyone will get along but they must work as one unit. I don’t play individuals. If they want the spot light they are not the grinder I need or want #Hogfbchat
  • CoachRmcD60 Jul 2 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A3 I think with getting along comes the respect so they go hand in hand IMO. They have to breath as one act as one and move as one #Hogfbchat
  • FISTFootball Jul 2 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A3: my guys will generally do both. By gaining confidence, trust, and respect in one another they will get along with one another. #hogfbchat
  • CoachSilvernail Jul 2 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A3: RESPECT! They don't have to be friends on or off of the field, but they NEED to respect each other. Respect breeds TRUST! #hogfbchat
  • CoachShemby Jul 2 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A3 - I want them to respect each other. Hold each other responsible for their actions. I hold my lineman to a higher standard not only on the field, but in the classroom and the community as well. It helps them respect each other. #hogfbchat

  • coach_remer Jul 2 @ 9:38 PM EDT
A3: Respect. There will always be disagreements , but them respecting each other is huge for me. IMO , you play harder for people you respect, both fellow players and coaches .#HogFbChat
  • SkinnyOLcoach Jul 2 @ 9:38 PM EDT
A3. Respect each other. I don't expect all the guys on the team to be best friends or heck even like each other. But if they respect each other and what they bring to the team that's bigger than getting along. #hogfbchat

  • Coach_Timmerman Jul 2 @ 9:39 PM EDT
A3) However you need to manage their personalities so they play as one cohesive unit. They may not necessarily like each other but the OL coach’s job is to make the OL feel like a special group #HogFbChat

  • CoachDingus - Moderator Jul 2 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A3: Must respect each other! Also they must love each other. I will hold our guys to the highest standard. We have to have Respect and Love for our brothers so we can be successful in the Classroom and on the field. No Respect or Love = No success. No accountability!#hogfbchat
  • MrMasonBPS Jul 2 @ 9:41 PM EDT

A3. I’ve always told teams I’ve coached that they don’t have to like each other (in fact they can hate each other’s guts) but they WILL respect each other. That part is non-negotiable. If they don’t like that then they can do something else. #hogfbchat
  • MrMasonBPS Jul 2 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A3: Great question! Tough one, but I have to go with respect. I tell my guys: There may be times I don't like you much, but I will always love you. That love comes from my respect for guys willing...EAGER...to be protectors, to do the hard stuff every day. #hogfbchat

  • MrMangoclass Jul 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
I am a huge fan of dividing up the offensive and dline and tire flipping. Then go into king of the hill one one tug of war. It creates competition and brotherhood. Then at the end we do a full oline and dline challenge make them all work together. #Hogfbchat
  • NickStro66 Jul 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT

  • FISTFootball Jul 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A4: I bring my guys to 7v7. We rep plays live against other teams, inside run and for pass pro. While lineman challenges are fun, I want my dudes to rep in game and on field stuff. I don’t care how many times they can flip a tire. I care how many times they can execute #hogfbchat
  • SkinnyOLcoach Jul 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A4. Since we have three team work outs a week for six weeks before camp starts they are working and drilling things just like practice all summer long. #hogfbchat

A4 - Team Camps, weight room challenges (plank for time, freak week (bar as many times, squat 95 lbs as many times) then while at 7 on 7, we do 1 on 1 pass rush to help the QB’s simulate pressure ( either against us or against other teams if we are playing someone else #hogfbchat

  • CoachWertz12 Jul 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A4: Preach that everything they do should be a competition, harp outworking the guys around you, but the guys you’ll be seeing in the fall. Question I always ask is did we outwork (insert week 1 opponent name) today? Constantly working to improve lifts, everything. #Hogfbchat
  • CoachMillerOL Jul 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT

  • MrMasonBPS Jul 2 @ 9:51 PM EDT
Agreed, Coach. Ours is already a high contact position. I am reluctant to beat them up too much in the summer. Sometimes, I'll even have the guys play 7-on-7 themselves in the summer. Why let the show horses have all the fun? Let the workhorses live the dream too! #hogfbchat
