Anyone remember Mystic Mint cookies!
A1 is empathy-fueled, human-centered problem solving
A1: Design Thinking is human-centered problem solving and innovative thinking fueled by empathy!
Hey Elaine!!! :) :) Heading your way soon!!
A1: DT is an empathy based, user centered, change making process
A1 Design thinking is the heroic journey towards an empathy-laden innovation. Willingness to find, lose and find our way again.
dig that u included the cookie link!
headed to Colorado later this month & next to have some DT fun w the crew
I think it's a human-first approach to designing solutions for problems (not biz outcomes first). https://t.co/7utaITy0Tu
Q1 What is design thinking?
Come to ! Awesome! Let's connect :) When will you be here?
Q2 on deck… This Q is more like a lead balloon vs softball… Google might be your friend & that’s OK
School I visited 2day(my old school from pre-school- 3rd grade) had a T share abt yesterday. https://t.co/KDmI8kzoyE
! Dig that emphasis on the empathy & willingness https://t.co/2AmPFul6bn

Dan’s giving out the early tonight!
empathy is really key - empathy is a distinguisher!
Hi . Just peeking in from BC Canada
People are bringing the good stuff early tonight!
A1: DT solves problems and makes ideas happen.
and we WILL get together soon!!! I’ve been in east bay a couple times recently in Walnut Creek right now.
i wld say w/o empathy for another your not understanding to solve a problem you are giving your solution based on SELF
Yeah it is! Y'know what makes me happy? Our answers are like the same! and you added "innovative!"
about more than solving probs - also about innovation and growth of an idea/concept/service
Empathy (to follow many great preachers out there) is sort of... a willingness to be interrupted by another's world.
I saw that... great minds :)
I’m being a social butterfly and a bird-walker at the moment. Gotta get focused. :)
Heroes Journey? https://t.co/zSyx3PCAeY
A1 Design thinking is the heroic journey towards an empathy-laden innovation. Willingness to find, lose and find our way again.
for example in Ss might just be tinkering or making for themselves vs another person/partner
. there are lots of problem solving processes & tools; DT focuses on the user & the user's POV to uncover solutions
A2: Social Entrepreneurs innovate to solve community problems - ideas tied to + generating income
Interrupt their world to what end? (thanks all for fielding my Qs). https://t.co/GJGU6gcpx5
Empathy (to follow many great preachers out there) is sort of... a willingness to be interrupted by another's world.
A2: searching for and creating solutions that benefit the society as a whole, not the individual.
A2 Social entrepreneurship fuses profitable business practices with social responsibility; we can make a living BY doing good
A2: Empathy Warriors: Looking for ways to help the Greater Good
Opposite of that, I mean. For ME to be interrupted by someone else's world -- by their story. https://t.co/XXH0McVx3W
Interrupt their world to what end? (thanks all for fielding my Qs). https://t.co/GJGU6gcpx5
Empathy (to follow many great preachers out there) is sort of... a willingness to be interrupted by another's world.
A2: I think social innovation can imply the use of empathy.. understanding others
Only solutions that will work ong-term are those that include POV from all angles. https://t.co/gMd64oMBbm
. there are lots of problem solving processes & tools; DT focuses on the user & the user's POV to uncover solutions
A2 W/O Googling revolves around Societal Needs + Business Opportunity Finding cost effective solutions Helping those in need
A2: making change to address community issues
My Ss have used DT for a # of Soc Entrepreneurship : helping women in dev co's, creating wellness kit, water filtration kit..
Social entrepreneurs use DT to put society first. Non-social ones put the bottom line or maybe--maybe--the customer first.
Empathy Warriors! Love this and the image it brings to my mind!! https://t.co/zZeSJsBPFB
A2: Empathy Warriors: Looking for ways to help the Greater Good
I would say that's social innovation; entrepreneurship piece = doing so while still benefiting indiv $ https://t.co/dSOBzazvsG
A2: searching for and creating solutions that benefit the society as a whole, not the individual.
88K evacuees = a really wicked problem but people are stepping up. Complex problem with lots of bumps right now
Q3 on deck… yes this is rapid fire Qs 4 This Q is around finding & defining problems
agree - I think the ability to earn $$ is part of it... many are non-profits that focus on soc entre
A2: focus on solving REAL problem in the world in consultation/partnership w/ the ppl. experiencing the problem.
t-shirts, bumper stickers, computer stickers, etc, etc
Just popped in to see a topic right up my alley: Social innovation and DT.
This sounds so in all the ways https://t.co/CYRCDpURJH
A2: Empathy Warriors: Looking for ways to help the Greater Good
Q4 How do design thinkers go abt finding problems? How are these problems defined?
Ah - sorry - misread. Similar Q - interrupted by someone else's world to what end? https://t.co/IpKycSwKEH
The in Pittsburgh is focused on innovating through Social Entrepreneurship.
A2. Social Entrepreneurship uses social good as a metric; empathic design is central to the work.
Gorgeous ex of social entrepreneurship: ; my Humanities class reads Start Something that Matters https://t.co/RnOdeRKwMY
A2 W/O Googling revolves around Societal Needs + Business Opportunity Finding cost effective solutions Helping those in need
Q4… (feel like I might have missed one in there somewhere. ;) https://t.co/XIlNzbnWuL
Q4 How do design thinkers go abt finding problems? How are these problems defined?
A2: Community-focused problem solving...best guess!
A4: find problems via empathy: walk a mile, interview, observation, contextual inquiry..
I would say they may be non-profit AND they are self-sustaining bc they create $ flow
Nope I skipped one opps I will tweet it shortly
A4. Live your learning life. Fall in love with the people around you -- problems and all.
A4: Just asking: What do you struggle with?
yes of course! Some are for-profit and that is also ok.. have a social responsibility agenda.
we can all go get them together in different fonts. ;)
A4. Identifying needs can be difficult especially when many designers come from privilege. Diversity in design teams essential.
A4: Get curious about others, take time to benefit the speaker, be present
YAAAAAS. I will gladly design-think some doodle stick-figure dudes, too...! https://t.co/f3cVDfdVpw
we can all go get them together in different fonts. ;)
yes - get out in neighborhoods, travel if you can, connect via GHO/tech
Q3 Got Skipped… Curious on the honesty of your answers for Q3 w/o adding shade to the Q…
A4 My Ss are trying to use empathy interviews to uncover needs in our school & beyond; struggling a bit
A4: probs come from our own lived experience and those around us
"social responsibility agenda"
A4 Social innovators seek out pain--not pain points, but *pain.* When they hit on it, then they go to work.
Q3 How is social entrepreneurship looked upon in your school? What is its value? Presence?
A4: Be a tourist in your own community. immerse self in a experience and observe look for sticky, pointy parts
Agree! Social entrepreneurship is our focus at : "Take a Class, Give a Class."
i had a response to your previous response and now I can’t find it. Got it? ;)
A4: I always break things down into verbs/moving systems.Break things down to components to find where the 'gear' stuck.
also difficult when designers comes from similar thought schools; may have diff words but habits similar
Reminder to follow new folks you meet on the chat tonight!!
Many designers come from privilege? Interesting. Your source for this claim? https://t.co/SlRY7ROqU7
A4. Identifying needs can be difficult especially when many designers come from privilege. Diversity in design teams essential.
A3: For us , social entreprenusrship is a core focus to our value - Ss doing SE 4th Q
A4. Working w/students to hone listening skills is essential to developing designers focused on social good.
Aha… we did miss one! Here is Q3. :) https://t.co/ybnU6nBGKN
Q3 How is social entrepreneurship looked upon in your school? What is its value? Presence?
I think there might be some truth to that.
A3 It isn't often expressed directly; why we focus on it in Humanities 1of2 https://t.co/z27aEoa4Vl
Q3 How is social entrepreneurship looked upon in your school? What is its value? Presence?
have been in many design studios... most folks are white, male and not in poverty.
That’s b/c you’re there and you are amazing!
A3: hasn't been much in focus. Mostly kids think abt donating $$ to "causes". We're working to change that as the sole response.
A3 My Ss design focus fidgets for Ss w stress/anxiety; now turning into social entrerp venture
A3. I teach a course in social entrepreneurship that is built on DT. Its an elective, but definitely has a high profile.
yes! move from $$ to causes to social justice change agents!
https://t.co/dIC0kkA8wK
A3 My Ss design focus fidgets for Ss w stress/anxiety; now turning into social entrerp venture
raises the ? How honest are our observations? and are those observations "loaded"?
Q3: To be honest, I don’t think my former school would know what we were talking about. ?
Piggy Backing on Q3…. Q5 is on Deck Get Ready
A3: Same in my corner too. "We" are always helping "them" rather than "knowing them." https://t.co/xWIxJPM70h
A3: hasn't been much in focus. Mostly kids think abt donating $$ to "causes". We're working to change that as the sole response.
I find it difficult to get kids to understand the difference btwn the two approaches and act accordingly!
start small.. get them a "client" and do a "design challenge" with them. Give a prompt.. etc
Yep. Likewise. https://t.co/1x8aEOFtx7
Q3: To be honest, I don’t think my former school would know what we were talking about. ?
The vast majority of design professionals are white.
A3 Soon there will be stress/anxiety fidgets available to purchase
I will CRUSH those. All (Kevin) Day. https://t.co/MEUCVuvf3Z
A3 Soon there will be stress/anxiety fidgets available to purchase
I am concerned sometimes that 'helping' can sometimes do more damage or further one's own an ideology
we TOTALLY had t/t discussion in my class this week; Ss having tough time w objectivity
yup.another “penny drive,” or donate $ can lose meaning, purpose. What’s the why &how can we really help? https://t.co/6wAh8XIZID
A3: hasn't been much in focus. Mostly kids think abt donating $$ to "causes". We're working to change that as the sole response.
Q5 How R social issues in your community explored & connected 2 your Ss in the classroom? How can design thinking play a role?
but regardless, the attitude also needs to shift from "them" to "all of us" I think
Agreed. That's the piece. https://t.co/22K7OBUy4W
but regardless, the attitude also needs to shift from "them" to "all of us" I think
What do you do if some families don't have funds to even create those things?
A5: we have two core classes dedicated to exploring community issues + we partner with community "clients" 1/2
2/2 Ss are designing learning games, an outdoor classroom in an underserved neighborhood, volunteer video for soup kitchen...
for how many schools & communities is this true? https://t.co/FnXPIjCFOy
A3: Same in my corner too. "We" are always helping "them" rather than "knowing them." https://t.co/xWIxJPM70h
A3: hasn't been much in focus. Mostly kids think abt donating $$ to "causes". We're working to change that as the sole response.
You got it. is key to changing mindset from 'helping' to 'co-laboring'. https://t.co/x2uI3O8ZK5
I am concerned sometimes that 'helping' can sometimes do more damage or further one's own an ideology
did powerful wrk w/this w/midd-schoolers & severely special needs Ss in class next door.made it real!
sorry I got caught trying to find a book for
we pay for all of it.. our kids dont have the funds.. 90% receive 95% financial aid for our school
A5/1 Hmmm. Perhaps reframing energy availability/footprint as a climate justice issue...?
School mandate big on social justice, so empathy and humility through initial need analysis is good https://t.co/rZKagc1w49
Q5 How R social issues in your community explored & connected 2 your Ss in the classroom? How can design thinking play a role?
A5/2 And towards more truly befriending our sister school in Haiti?
Q5, if you missed it… https://t.co/lBS65IXMBp
Q5 How R social issues in your community explored & connected 2 your Ss in the classroom? How can design thinking play a role?
I need a field trip to some classes...

A5: my Ss stumbled on a Homeless pop. exploration while planting flowers at the library down the street
Helloooo! What an awesome dchallenge! Was just mentioned my Ss work w/severely disabled Ss at my school.
Cool project :) https://t.co/XA9OkjgxmM
Ela here-just off all-day workshop "redesigning" Boston subway for the blind, disabled. great Q's for this moment! Thx!
I agree, we need 2 deeply engage in empathy phase so as to avoid ending up with a paternalistic "solution"
Q6 How can Ss work w/ social entrepreneurs 2 design real-world solutions 2 critical social & environmental challenges?
Q5 our S's codesign things to help local elderly in their lives, many still in use.
have u seen work around homeless shelters? awesome! https://t.co/c10sHgFU0b
A5: my Ss stumbled on a Homeless pop. exploration while planting flowers at the library down the street
We had the same thing happen in our early childhood program this year during their focus on "what makes a home."
Amen. An authentic dt journey will lead us right OUT of paternalistic reach -- and in a new place https://t.co/fNsqDh1wQI
I agree, we need 2 deeply engage in empathy phase so as to avoid ending up with a paternalistic "solution"
Just like when you design a learning experience, first important task is to know your learner https://t.co/9PJi5nCSSY
I agree, we need 2 deeply engage in empathy phase so as to avoid ending up with a paternalistic "solution"
A6 reading Q6 Q I must counter it & say Why can’t THEY B the Soc. Entrepreneurs?
Right? They are really learning to be resilient & dig deeper for solutions
A6: Ts and As just need to give Ss the TIME, SPACE and SUPPORT 2 become social entrepreneurs..help them find partners as well.
have u met Barbara Beskind Amazing designer in her 90’s? My Ss were so impressed when they met her.
A6 What a righteous "20% time" project that'd be
A5 (cont): Ss were wrked w/non-profits in support of homeless pop. had external exprts who helped design HomelessNotHouseless
Heh if you want to see large scale empathy please follow or or 1/2
School crosses over from purely academic 2 whole world lrng. Hard 4 Ts & As 2 see value in line-jumping https://t.co/n9xGvPhMXD
A5: my Ss stumbled on a Homeless pop. exploration while planting flowers at the library down the street
Q6… https://t.co/yPJ01pWLVa
Q6 How can Ss work w/ social entrepreneurs 2 design real-world solutions 2 critical social & environmental challenges?
We've started populating the store; made another discovery today t/t pushed a new solution brain
Create time for Ss to get out "into the field" and gain empathy, test designs, showcase work, fundraise
2 Qs left on deck to conclude Thank you for all who have shared their thoughts, examples, & ideas
three gifts that school/governing boards & communities could bestow upon Ts & Admin https://t.co/FK7iyN7eJh
A6: Ts and As just need to give Ss the TIME, SPACE and SUPPORT 2 become social entrepreneurs..help them find partners as well.
A6: help Ss to find ways 2 design solutions w/in their own communities. meaningful when close 2 home.
Working for it means owning it. Things students own are things they will take with them.
I love this--Its the perfect ethos for all learning, even beyond social entrepreneurship.
Q7 As educators, what do you need to help you navigate & embrace Social Entrepreneurship + Design Thinking in your school?
Here’s Q7… https://t.co/sK9VOcMStx
Q7 As educators, what do you need to help you navigate & embrace Social Entrepreneurship + Design Thinking in your school?
88 000 evacuees. Many left with just the clothes on their back or had to get out their car and run from "an ocean of fire|"
Ahhh hadn't considered that particular lens of "we"
A7 PRECISELY what said... Within me? The courage to leave a comfortable, known way.
A7 I believe DT + Soc. Entrepreneurship are a perfect marriage & recipe 2 create, learn, & grow Time & opportunity are needed
we needs to include user in thought and practice
Tonight. Right now. Here. . Why I love Twitter. This is why I tweet. Community like this.
As a person of Aboriginal heritage, I am well aware of the effects of "helping" ideology that has cultural bias.
A7: Freedom and trust from As to take Ss where they need to go to succeed in life.
Another friendly reminder 2 follow new folks you meet tonight!
Final Q & Good nights up next
! Yes! And ownership is a difficult pathway https://t.co/kEN4K7l9qb
Working for it means owning it. Things students own are things they will take with them.

A7: TIME, and also school-wide interest rather than just pockets in certain classes, so work can continue, build, grow each year
for Gollum syntax & for poetic definition of https://t.co/3EMC7jZOA1
we needs to include user in thought and practice
Q8 What is a Societal Issue/Need that poses an Entrepreneurship Opportunity your Ss cld possibly tackle? https://t.co/DQ9GS14Ffg
The "how might we" is okay if people deconstruct their world view while they 'what if" (The W in my W.E.D.E.S.I.G.N)
is crucial to understanding the "other" so I can be a better me for the world. https://t.co/uKWDynliHj
As a person of Aboriginal heritage, I am well aware of the effects of "helping" ideology that has cultural bias.
A7: stop talking about it and Just do it!
hey there! Where are you joining us from?
YAAAS. An Olympic cycle of (re)doing it, rather than once, rushed, and self-congrats. https://t.co/YuKkvkW4Ne
A7: TIME, and also school-wide interest rather than just pockets in certain classes, so work can continue, build, grow each year
yes, I did some work in Ghana and found myself considering our role there very carefully, even tho it was codesign.
all-star pro moderator.. best chat i've been too in awhile. Excited to work with you again this summer
A7: get out of the classroom and into the community. connect w/ppl "on the ground" police, fire, etc.
Absolutely! And the space for multiple iterations even from year to year as students learn more & new ideas emerge
A8 The perfectionism treadmill... Underground bullying...
ie some Aboriginal people get answers from spirits/ ancestors but how do 'we' work that into a school product/response
meet Who is adapting design thinking for social justice right now, doing amazing work.
