#langchat Archive

#LangChat is dedicated to the discussion of topics associated with issues and trends in world language instruction and learning. Educators, administrators, learners, and aficionados of world languages are encouraged to participate and share their experiences and input on various topics such as new ways to teach vocabulary, using music in the language classroom, and making standards-based grading valid. This chat is also unique in that it brings together language educators worldwide and from different contexts (elementary, secondary, higher education, etc.) and languages.

  • ProfeCochran Nov 3 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1) Only "assignments" that show learning get graded in my class, with the exception of a weekly reflection (easy 10 points). #langchat

  • profe_robbins Nov 3 @ 8:09 PM EDT
Formative/practice assignments first then graded summarize #langchat
  • MmeBlouwolff Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Can you say more about "that show learning"? Very curious! #langchat
    In reply to @ProfeCochran
  • ADiazMora Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 larger activities go into language practice (not necessarily given a weight-more for evidence) & then summative assess in book #langchat
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Not really. It's like "How can we still get enough nutrients on a budget" #langchat
    In reply to @edutinker
  • CatherineKU72 Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
#langchat A1 And that is the end of that question! But, seriously there are times when certain student types need more ¨encouragment¨ 2 work

A1: Formative gets reviewed. Summative goes in the gradebook #langchat
  • erikashupe80 Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: All graded assignments must fall under one of the 3 communication modes. Students know not all work goes in the gradebook #langchat
  • PiperKrupa Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Homework does not get graded. Quizzes are graded for feedback. Tests are lang performances to show off new skills. (not I gotcha.. #langchat
  • SrMedina_MVHS Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 Formative Assessments that will lead explicitly to the Summative Assessment will receive a grade but most importantly feedback #langchat

A1- Formative/practice assignments first then graded summarize #langchat

    • SraRoar Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 Quizzes, tests, projects, and daily assignments that are more summative in nature. Honestly, not as mindful/organized as I should be.
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
yeah, in the spirit of @senorg's suggestion, I just give credit for completion of truly formative things #langchat
    In reply to @ProfeCochran, @SenorG
  • profe_robbins Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1-Formative/practice assignments first then graded summative #langchat
  • Marishawkins Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT

    In reply to @SraSpanglish, @SenorG
  • MlleSulewski Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
I do try not to use grades punitively but there are some instances when a reality check is needed. #langchat

  • SECottrell Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
I live in an almost perfect assessment world and only "score" the semester-final proficiency checkup #langchat
  • SenoritaHersh Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1 I try to use a variety of skills but I grade the most authentic activity that they've built up to doing. #langchat
  • SenorG Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
I used "pesos" for motivation...they were worth negligible % in gradebook but served to motivate #langchat
    In reply to @CatherineKU72
  • kballestrini Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Exactly. Everything is assessed; take away as much emphasis from “grades” as possible #langchat :)
    • SECottrell Nov 3 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Hi #langchat! I like to talk assessment though I do not give any "grades" (B, 87, etc.)
  • welangley Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: In class "practice" is all formative, take completion grades as a thank you, summative assessments from 3 modes get a "score" #langchat
  • amandabhunter Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1 Homework goes in the grade book, or they won't do it; but it's a completion grade. #langchat
  • MlleSulewski Nov 3 @ 8:11 PM EDT
I have a hard time with that not eventually turning into point grubbing though :/ #langchat

    In reply to @MlleSulewski, @ProfeCochran, @SenorG
  • SECottrell Nov 3 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Before the no-grades world, my A1 answer was, whatever gave me enough numbers to keep the admin from asking about assessment #langchat
  • welangley Nov 3 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1: I also do "quick quizzes" most days which end up being listening comp grades. #langchat
  • srafischer Nov 3 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Formative goes in as learning practice but not everything we do gets graded. Summative weighted heavy to "cover" formative #langchat
  • SECottrell Nov 3 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Do you assign a number grade or is it more a check-off grade? #langchat
    In reply to @MmeBlouwolff

  • SraSpanglish - Moderator Nov 3 @ 8:13 PM EDT

  • MlleSulewski Nov 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT

  • MmeFarab Nov 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT
    A1 If it's summative, it's a grade. If it's homework, it's a grade. If it's formative ... only because I have to include some. #langchat

Combatting some tweetdeck issues tonight ... anyone else having trouble? #langchat
  • CatherineKU72 Nov 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT
#langchat A1 I can give feedback on our grading system by listing the proficiency level & not a number grade. Can also tie proficiency to #.
  • kltharri Nov 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2: used to be all the traditional stuff- projects, "big" things, in class things, homework #langchat
  • Marishawkins Nov 3 @ 8:14 PM EDT
