#ADWTeach A1 We try to teach empathy at all grade levels but I feel that by the time they get to MS it's in direct conflict with their me me me attitude
Hello, everyone! Iam sorry I was late; my wife Bernadette and I were putting the four little McClains to sleep (and I survived to type this Tweet)! I am in my twelfth year of teaching theology and Spanish at Bishop McNamara H.S. in Forestville, Prince George's County. #ADWTeach
A2) Sympathy implies offering comfort, condolences, generosity of time, etc. Empathy signifies attempting to place oneself in another's shoes and fathoming (or at least endeavoring to fathom) his or her challenging situation. #ADWTeach
It certainly is harder if you don't practice it! The busier we are, the harder it is to see other sides of an issue or the bigger picture when looking at things that have occurred. #adwteach
A3. It definitely is in Social Studies. I love having my students write journals where they take part in an event. It's hard for them, sometimes, to see a different side, but it can be a great activity. #adwteach
A2 ESPECIALLY in this day & age, we need to teach empathy - the "all about me" attitude makes the world so small, but we all need to be more aware of others, we never know what another is going through #ADWteach
Elise Heil - principal at SHS! Yes - empathy is a part of our curriculum. We teach the standards through a variety of global issues. Teaching with the world in mind requires teachers to find opportunities for empathy! #adwteach
Empathy must begin in the home. Educators can only do our best to foster sympathetic and empathetic responses that are ingrained elsewhere. We have such a grand opportunity to do as best as we can, but we require significant familial reinforcement to be most effective. #ADWTeach
A4 We hold a hunger banquet during Holy Week for MS Ss. 60% sit on floor, eat rice with fingers, drink tap water. 30% sit at lunch tables, bottled water, rice and chili. 10% sit at set tables with meal served by Ts, including dessert. Speaker from local charity. #ADWTeach
We also teach empathy during the little moments - lunch, hallway, recess. Social & emotional learning must be a priority in schools - even if there isn’t a designated time for it! #ADWTeach
A4 Nearpod has some free and low cost modules for teaching empathy. I used one with my 8th religion class. Unfortunately, we haven't had time to talk about it since classes have been interrupted a lot lately. #ADWTeach
A3: Don’t we teach empathy through the books, stories, and poems we use in the classroom...whether it is for Lit, Math, SS or Religion #ADWLearn#ADWTeach
A3) As a theology teacher: YES! Jesus showed empathy to those who were in need of some sort of care (physical and/or spiritual). Those with spiritual sickness were often beholden to their sin(s), and he who was sinless accompanied them to conversion and righteousness. #ADWTeach
There are a few thinking routines like Feel - Think - Care that can be used when thinking about systems that can foster perspective taking and empathy. #ADWTeach
I think it's a good way to help students practice and some might be more comfortable doing so with fictional/historical characters rather than actual people. Hopefully, those skills would transfer to real life. #adwteach
Global thinking routines like the 3 Ys help students to see connections between their own lives and issues affecting those around the world. #glocal#adwteach
A4) I recommend ensuring that any secular resources used are in line with Catholic social teaching. They are typically sound, but occasionally, they are counter to the Church's teachings on human sexuality (i.e., chastity), respect for human life in all its stages, etc. #ADWTeach
A5 We have an 8th grade group called Christ Care Corps. They are dedicated to service on a continuing basis during the year. The teacher in charge is very particular about who can join! #ADWTeach
A5) I recently learned about this endeavor, as reported by @cnalive. Perhaps your school has some interest in participating in such an initiative, in order to foster inter-religious and intercultural accord at a global level. https://t.co/Qm81Q0QMV3#adwteach
I'm glad I'm following thus chat as I am currently reading/ listening to a book call Unselfie : How Empathetic Children Succeed in an All-About-Me World by Michele Borba #adwteach
A6. I think the focus on service and instilling Catholic values in our students are good starts to empathy. It can be hard for some students and there are developmental challenges across grade levels. #adwteach
A6 the sense of community, family, and shared responsibility plays a large role in developming empathy, but sometimes parents need to be reminded to model empathy# #adwteach
Q6 I believe our @ADWCathSchools do a good job developing empathy - we teach as Jesus did, we model His love and service to others, so even if it's not "officially" in our curriculum (& it may be, I just don't know about it!), I believe we do teach our Ss to develop it #ADWteach
A6 I think many of our children leave us with a pretty well developed sense of empathy. A number of our former students have done really good things during high school and beyond. #ADWTeach
A6) For the most part, yes, but Catholics schools must redouble our efforts to align our instruction of empathy with the Gospel. Our students are entering a world that is increasingly inconsiderate of Christian insights, although the Gospel is charitable at its core. #ADWTeach
Q7. Someone from the food pantry talked to our students about the different things that they needed (no cranberry sauce), and I loved how she brought the clients to life. #ADWTeach
Q7 - we try to do year long service projects with multiple visits to the same site to allow for relationships to be built and allow students to reflect on their experience in between visits #ADWTeach
A7. And! We collected board books for the parents to give to their children to read and take home, and I thought that was a great way to help Ss realize that children are hungry, too. #adwteach
A7 It's often hard to find the time to process with students. When it's over, it's over. I try, whenever I can, to discuss but it often takes a back seat to other classes. #ADWTeach
A7) I spend a lot of time on empathy in the classroom, but I probably don't focus enough on processing after a service project or event like today's student prayer #ADWTeach
A7 Some of our service projects have items kept on our prayer tables in the classrooms as a reminder - I need to do more to point them out & remind the students! #ADWteach
A8: this is a tough one. I would have to say it can be used for both good and evil. I think a students lack of empathy and or sympathy determines their actions when using tech and/or social media. Does that make sense? #ADWTeach
A8) this is tough, I think overall tech can be more positive, as tech makes it easier to get info and gives them a public platform. . . But tech can be so isolating too #ADWTeach
A7) The reflection component is vital. That is how we lead students to realize that social justice, properly understood, is not a matter of checking an item off on a list. Such an attitude risks devolving into emotionalism instead of actual empathy, let alone charity. #ADWTeach
A8) MUCH harder. Social media has many rewarding aspects (one of which we are currently undertaking), but it is rife with menaces to empathy. We see this with cyber-bullying, shaming, posting inappropriate content, and so forth. We must teach students to post prudently. #ADWTeach
