Monday 9-10 p.m. EST. Building a Culture of Learning. "We invite all educators, parents, students and any member of a school community to join our mission of moving away from compliance to create and foster a true COL."
Good Evening. I’m Frank Bellomo, an Elementary Principal from Macomb, MI. It’s great to be here with you guys. I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas on leadership! #COLchat
A1. Elem. Level: Student Council, Green Team, Service Squad, Safety Patrol, Students mentoring younger students, Principal’s Committee where students help make decisions in the school, Broadcast Team…Limitless #COLchat
A1: While at the middle school, I often tried to identify students other students seemed to follow (not always the ones adult viewed as leaders) and seek their input & ideas. #COLchat
A2. When team members know that you welcome their ideas and will support them along the way, they are more likely to be encouraged to take on leadership roles. Let people know when you see good in them! #COLchat
Our Ts are awesome and they support & co-lead @WKHSLINK, @WKHS_StuCo, Diversity Alliance and all kinds of important “teams” bc we want our Ss to have a voice. Impressed with all the ways our school honors student leadership. #COLchat
A2 We are offering a teacher leadership class in collaboration with our local University to grow their leadership skills both within district and beyond! #colchat

This is fantastic Matt! Thanks for joining us as well. #COLchat Our district has teachers participate with our MISD for Teacher Leadership as well. Good stuff! #COLchat
A3: “Empowering teachers to take on leadership roles gives educators a true stake in their school.” Teacher Efficacy: Why It Matters and How Administrators Can Help (via @Pocket) https://t.co/NxCVEipt8N#COLchat
A3. To develop, allow people to join you in decision making and on committees or teams. Model impt. leadership qualities such as listening, communicating, supporting others, taking risks…etc. Praise their efforts and give up some control so others can learn to lead. #COLchat
A3: Leadership development is contagious w staff that excels in committing to Ss having a variety of opportunities. Ts use PLC & PD time to grow ideas that serve our Ss. Active Ts leading ... #COLchat
A4. You can equip future leaders through relevant PD, modeling essential qualities of a leader, and supporting them when they make mistakes. Provide specific feedback so that people can grow as leaders. None of us are perfect leaders. We are all better at diff. things.#COLchat
A4: We wrote a Title Ii competitve grant to support our admin and teachers in getting training on developing their leadership strengths through state organizations like @MASALeads@massp and @WMUCEHD#colchat@miched
A4: It often starts with reaching out and inviting involvement. That vote of confidence goes a long way.
It's important to ask questions, instead of always providing answers.
#COLchat
A4: I have always had mentors & ppl looking to help me advance my leadership goals. Best schools support Ts who step up & take leadership risks! #COLchat
A4 In addition we have job embedded coaching models, delayed start PLC times almoset every Thursday, and district wide committees lead by teacher initatives. #colchat#miched
A5. If someone falters in their leadership, have the empathy to help them get back up. Offer advice for the sole purpose of seeing them and your team succeed, but not to put them down. When you do make mistakes as a leader,it’s ok to admit it. Humility is a needed trait. #COLchat
A5: One of my favorite quotes comes in handy for this: "The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything." - Theodore Roosevelt
Mistakes are part of trying! #COLchat
A6. People are encouraged to lead when they are in an environment that fosters ideas and leadership from others. The feeling that you are valued and can offer contributions to the team can spark the will to lead. Give people opportunities to try/start new things. #COLchat
A6. Folks want to lead when they feel they have something to give others. We must build up our educators strengths and then praise and give opportunities to share. #colchat
A7. Districts and schools can have Curricular Teams, Teacher Leaders, district supported or provided professional development relating to leadership, mentorship opportunities.. You don’t have to be an administrator to be a leader. ANYONE on the team can be a leader! #COLchat
A6: leaders will lead one way or another. Try to make your school the place Ts choose to contribute their talent & ideas to LEADING right at home. My T experiences taught me not to overlook all the talent in my own school. Leaders will LEAD so provide space & support. #COLchat
A7. Districts and schools can have Curricular Teams, Teacher Leaders, district supported or provided professional development relating to leadership, mentorship opportunities.. You don’t have to be an administrator to be a leader. ANYONE on the team can be a leader! #COLchat
Me too Lisa. Tonight is a light crowd but loving the ideas from all of you. I definitely would like to have some more district people join us. In time perhaps. #COLchat.
I am looking forward to discussing leadership tomorrow at our PD. Seems like our teams have a great day of PD planned. I’d like to thank the guy who did the planning! lol #COLchat
A8. I will continue to value the contributions of others. I will point out the leadership qualities I see in others and ask for help when I need it. Sometimes people want to help but we are too afraid to bother them. I count on multiple. leaders who are not admin. #COLchat
@WaltKozlowski
Sometimes leaders have to be followers.
Thanks to @FbellomoB for leading this one and thanks to everyone else for the ideas & sharing.
