Good morning! Ben here from North Carolina. Former engineer & physics/math teacher, now an author and https://t.co/i25KmYBHze consultant (although I hate that word). #SatChat
A1: Ss, Ts, Admin & Ps are all used to traditional classrooms, comfortable with them, & plan lessons to support learning in this Environment. With tech and other resources available, trad classrooms might not always need the Ss needs. #satchat
Here we go friends! Q1 of the #StoriesInEDU slowchat BOOK STUDY coming up in less than 1 hour. Be sure to use the #StoriesInEDU hashtag so we can all see your comments on Sat./Tues. Qs throughout the week. Chat w/o the book or get it here https://t.co/EyWXyGFrod#satchat#edtech
Jamie from cold & blustery Upstate NY. Principal at the amazing #WestCarthageES and moderator of Wednesday’s #WB4K EDU chats. Hunkering down for the big storm that’s supposed to be coming!#satchat
A1: Ss, Ts, Admin & Ps are all used to traditional classrooms, comfortable with them, & plan lessons to support learning in this Environment. With tech and other resources available, trad classrooms might not always need the Ss needs. #satchat
A1: + We have a diverse group of students present, thus an opportunity to build strong relationships that can help them learn and grow. - We tend to squander that opportunity by not treating each learner as an individual (1-size-fits-all lessons, archaic grading, etc.) #satchat
A1: Traditional classrooms - Positive: prepared many children over time for success Negative: didn't prepare many children over time for success #satchat
A1: ➕s: Sense of community; ability to forge strong relationships with Ss
➖s: Enclosed with "four-wall" mentality; can stifle creativity; furniture not as moveable; & size restrictions
#satchat
A1: One positive is that Ts and Ss are comfortable with it. We can move from one to the next without much change. We know how it works and what to expect.
One negative is - we are comfortable with it. It doesn’t stretch or challenge us in any way. #satchat
A1: so, my mind thinks a little differently. The positives of the traditional classroom are always the humans in it. People who, at the end of the day care. The negatives tend to be more facility, environmental and structural #satchat
A1 - traditional classroom - benefits - quiet, teachers can work on other things while students do book work. haha - Downsides, less thinking, less interaction and meaningful discussion. #satchat
A1. Positive: Student knows where to sit & what to expect.
Negative: Student knows where to sit & what to expect.
Students need routine (I do!) but also get shaken out of their routine.
#satchat
A1 What's traditional? You can have all the tech & be corresponding w/clssrms around the world yet the basic elements of your classroom can be very traditional. #satchat
A1 - Positives - Classroom is usually quite organized and can contain fewer distractions. Info can be clearly presented by a teacher and discussed.
#satchat
A1: Traditional classroom
Positives: predictability and structure
Negatives: NO student voice and choice, in learning environment or learning process #satchat
A1 Traditional Classroom
✅ Tends 2 B a place of comfort w/ a known setup for Ts & some Ss
✅ Most schools are already equipped w/ furniture
✖️Lacks flexibility
✖️Tends 2 support a sage on stage, rather than guide-on-the-side teaching
✖️Lacks excitement/innovation
#satchat
Good morning, #satchat! Chi, Director & Teacher from FL. My all-encompassing answer to the Ultimate Classroom would be that it contains an outstanding teacher, who cares about children and is creative about teaching concepts in an informed way. The rest is frosting. 🤓
A1: +'s Ss learn, Ss can get engaged, Ss can basically do everything they should in school
-'s Not willing to try something different as the teacher to further enhance the experience of Ss
#satchat
A1
Positives - Relationships, Closed Community, Comfort.
Negatives - Has not changed in over 200 years but our society ideas and needs has shifted.
#Satchat
A!: Positive: We're all together, sharing the same spaces, for much of the day.
Negative: We're all together, sharing the same spaces, for much of the day.
#satchat
A1 Positives- students and staff know the expectations
Negatives- if you speak out about the traditional classroom you are considered a rebel, even though it's in the best interest of the learner. #satchat
A1.2: I think for me the classroom is always about the humans. The room structure should be developed in a way to improve communication flow and build trust and community between learners. That’s the goal. #satchat
A1: a negative- sitting in a desk all period, all day. If you’re an educator who hasn’t played student for a while, spend an entire day doing it. I’ve forgotten how trained my body used to be to sit all day. Don’t want to go back to that! #satchat
A1. The positives would be structure and relationships but the negatives are so many: unmotivated kids, kids are just sitting and memorizing with no connection to real world producing learners for jobs that do not exist. #satchat
#satchat
A1: ➕s: Sense of community; ability to forge strong relationships with Ss
➖s: Enclosed with "four-wall" mentality; can stifle creativity; furniture not as moveable; & size restrictions
#satchat
A1 Andrea from CT-former English/journalism teacher & now in Ed comms. As we transition to newer, student-centered learning models, we should also be flexible. There's a role for traditional, direct instruction & systemic skill development for critical, targeted skills. #satchat
A1. Positives: accountability, routine, consistency.
Negatives: feedback takes a backseat to grades & takes a LONG time as huge stacks of papers pile up to be graded.
Course grades are average of unit x, y, z - hiding the fact that students may never have mastered x. #satchat
This is a long overdue #satchat topic.
Positive about traditional #education: gives lazy teachers crutches (is that positive, though?).
Negative about traditional education: makes kids hate learning.
A1 Traditional classrooms promote sage on the stage teaching & a lack of choice for Ss. Doesn't create life long learners or prepare them for their future. I am hard pressed to find positives....
#SatChat
A1 This is such an interesting question. I know what is in most of our heads when we contemplate this question but, I’m not sure really what the traditional classroom is #satchat
#satchat A1 I think positives include structure and expectations kids rely on to feel successful in a learning environment. I think negatives include boredom and that traditional classrooms stifle creativity.
Yes! You can't get more passive than the fact that I woke a sleeping (and he was out) student at a computer yesterday. Just because we add a computer, doesn't take it out of traditional either.
#satchat
A1 The positives are traditional classrooms are easy to manage and predictable. The negatives are that’s usually only best for the adults. #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
A1 Positives - ensure all material is covered and rigorous testing
Negatives - teacher centered, students have no chance to show off talents, 21st century skills are ignored. #satchat
Sounds like what my house will be like as we get snowed in tomorrow. Hopefully I want have to referee too many fights between my kids and the dog doesnt steal too much of my food #satchat
A1: Traditional classrooms are predictable but predictability is not always the answers to teaching Ss to think creatively. By encouraging flexible learning spaces- we foster innovative approaches to teaching and learning. #Satchat
A1: Positive is that some kids like the teacher directed focus. They have a tendency to be more quiet, again, preferred by some students. Negative is that kids DO less. #satchat
A1 traditional classroom is set up to minimize disruption. Students seated alone in rows. Desk and chair attached Sadly we still have some of these at my schools. 😔 #satchat
A1: Positive: Everyone is comfortable with the traditional classroom. Parents, Ts, Ss, all know what to expect from it. Neg: It doesn’t take into consideration How much our world and therefore Ss have changed. #satchat
A1. TRADITIONAL #satchat
Total participation: Ss will have direct interaction with Ts & can ask questions or for more explanation on areas they didn’t understand.
Face-to-face interaction: Ss can easily hold face-to-face interactions & solve problems with other classmates.
A1 Positives are that if you are a really high-performing kid who learns best by listening and reading things from the chalkboard then you will shine #satchat
A1. Traditionally-designed classrooms can provide a level of security for many teachers. There is still work that needs tables & chairs at times. However, sometimes we need to break the traditional mindset for creativity to flow. Learning is not confined to a desk. #satchat
A1 Positives-inspiring passion & dedication of teachers to understand & translate contemporary research on how kids learn We need to support all Ts in understanding b/c some CRs are still doing too much on the left of this graphic in contrast to the research (negatives) #satchat
A1. Traditional = Establish responsibility among the students: Tradition systems use a fixed timetable which must be followed by all students this helps in preparing students for future responsibilities. #SatChat
Amy from Akron Ohio #satchat A1 A2 Key characteristic for both traditional and modern classrooms Relationships Relationships Relationships #KidsDeserveIt
The word “traditional” often carries a negative connotation, which isn’t necessarily true. “Traditional” classrooms led by teachers who care about kids & are focused on supporting the learning of their students are successful learning spaces! #satchat
A:1 . A traditional classroom ensures that the teacher will impart instruction in predictable ways and students will be receivers. The negative part is when it is time for collaboration and divergent thinking. #satchat
A1) Positives - routine, a sense of community, organization for the sake of the teacher, can be creative and imaginative
Negatives - One size fits all approach, doesn’t take all students into consideration, made more for the teacher and not the students. #Satchat
A1: My training to be a teacher (many, many years ago) included a discussion on setting up the classroom. It was all about organization, need rows, very formulaic and not personalized or individualized. #satchat
A1: the routine & structure is good when it comes to traditional classrooms but the cons are the predictability(can be boring), lack of flexibility, lack equity& access for all Ss, and exhausting for Ts bc they do heavy lifting #satchat
I used to have those desks. Glad I dont anymore. They are inflexable and were the worse to create group tables with. In groups, kids were wedged with the opening for their seat toward another's desktop. #satchat
A1: +s: community, efficient, structured, predictable -s: T centered not S, not effective for all Ss, not set up to allow for creativity and collaboration #satchat
Yes! It creates an artificial construct of how learning and growth often occurs in the real world (collaborative, ill-defined, multiple pathways, iterative, etc....the exact opposite of what often occurs in highly controlled classrooms). #SatChat
A2: Choice, flexibility, integration of tech, and focusing on skills to help prepare students for their future: Collaboration, Computational Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Emotional Intelligence. #SatChat

A2: Ultimate wish? Mass standardization goes out. Timeless learning comes in: Listening to Kids and Designing from Scratch for Timeless Learning via @Getting_Smarthttps://t.co/gD1nYgtQe3#satchat
A1: My training to be a teacher (many, many years ago) included a discussion on setting up the classroom. It was all about organization, need rows, very formulaic and not personalized or individualized. #satchat
A2: More of a focus on soft skills that are transferrable to life beyond school (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, citizenship, etc.). Teachers play more of a facilitator role. Students work as a team to solve problems. It's a construction zone🚧! #satchat
A1: Positive: Everyone is comfortable with the traditional classroom. Parents, Ts, Ss, all know what to expect from it. Neg: It doesn’t take into consideration How much our world and therefore Ss have changed. #satchat
I don’t believe traditional is synonymous with bad. I’ve sat through some amazing lectures that informed my thinking & inspired me; those would qualify as “traditional” yet they were incredibly powerful. Of course, it’s all about balance. #satchat
A1: Positive to traditional classrooms is they may look neater and there is predictability. A negative to traditional classrooms is there seems to be more focus on compliance than collaborative and free thinking. #satchat
A1: positives about a traditional classroom, students are used to the expectations, a traditional classroom has worked effectively for what we think of as “traditional ss ” (white, affluent) negatives - doesn’t work for all ss, may not be the best for critical thinking,#satchat
A2: the greatest characteristic of the modern classroom is the diversity of students that exist within the community. 50 years ago, schools were still going through de-segregation #satchat
Excellent point, Bill. Most of what happens in our classrooms daily is because it fits the teacher's comfort zone. Thanks for sharing this important point. #IGNITE your passion. #satchat
A1 agile learning spaces provide flexibility to become another technology and practice in a teacher’s tool belt / capability to shift into individual, small, whole group learning sometimes simultaneously - trad classrooms support a “one trick pony” approach #satchat
A “traditional” classroom can be effective for a few student in the room, but will fail to reach the diverse group of learners that populate most classrooms. #satchat
A2: This! A learning environment focused on student needs and choices where Ss own their learning and enjoy the process!#satchat Always puts what’s best for kids at the forefront 😊
I'm no fan of rigor, but I suppose that's a different topic. I've never seen any legitimate evidence that standardized or other traditional testing reveals anything honest about what kids have learned. #satchat
Good morning #satchat! Larry Zuares, instructional coach from NJ.
A1: One positive of the "traditional" classroom was that teachers were treated as highly respected professionals.
One negative was that it was too easy to allow students to "fall through the cracks."
#satchat A2 - Hopefully the "modern" classroom includes student engagement, relationship building, caring, kindness, and sharing information seamlessly.
A1: I’ve been doing alternative programming for 4 months now. I can’t really give any additional positives about the traditional classroom. I’m Janice from KY, Program Director for @IAmSuccessLex#satchat
A1: one positive is that parents can identify with that experience. Negative: we’re preparing students for the world their parents grew up in. #satchat
A2 A modern classroom should be flexible, able to adapt depending on where the activity is. Seating should allow for focus up front, whole class interaction, small groups, or individuals, as well as easy transitions between school/home. #satchat
I had a ed professor who made us sit that way in class; turn in assignments on assigned colored-index cards, and marked us down if we didn't come dressed like teachers! @ScottRRocco#satchat
A1: My training to be a teacher (many, many years ago) included a discussion on setting up the classroom. It was all about organization, need rows, very formulaic and not personalized or individualized. #satchat
A2 agree w @posickj It’s all about being responsive to the students in the class. What are their needs? What approaches are developmentally appropriate for the class? #satchat
I think we have a false impression of it working. When I was a student in the 70's many students dropped out. I stayed in school, but spent most of my time hiding a book under my desk & reading. Evidently our traditional classrooms didn't work for many of us.
#SatChat
A2: A “modern” classroom should eliminate barriers as much as possible. The classroom should extend beyond the school walls by leveraging tech as a vehicle to the global community. #innovatingEDU through communication & collaboration with global peers #satchat
Yes, some very respected and beloved teachers are traditional. After all, I learned in a traditional classroom and loved some of my teachers. Hence, I became a teacher. Good point. #IGNITE your passion. #satchat
The word “traditional” often carries a negative connotation, which isn’t necessarily true. “Traditional” classrooms led by teachers who care about kids & are focused on supporting the learning of their students are successful learning spaces! #satchat
A1. Traditional classrooms tend to focus on learning as an individual task. Also, cinderblock boxes don't provide a significant variance from prisons, do they? #satchat
Kids need choice; not all kids have the same learning styles. As leaders, it is so important to gain input from Ss and Ps about learning styles to find a right match. #satchat
A2 modern classroom allows for more flexibility for how Ss can learn. Individually, partnered, small group, virtually. There is a misunderstanding that classroom management is no longer needed because it is very active. This type of classroom needs a T w GREAT CM skills #satchat
A2: more S ownership, #equity AND access , more tech integration, more parent& community involvement, increased independence & interdependence, skills based curricula, #SEL integration #UDL#satchat
A2 Modern classrooms are student centered and prepare students to be successful in the real world. Flexibility, creativity, collaboration, multimedia, multi form showing of knowledge (assessment) #satchat
A2: The modern classroom could have flexible seating and technology available for ea S. Plus... being able to write on anything :-) Also no walls fr the use of a good LMS
#satchat
A2: Learning s not bound by by classroom or school walls. It occurs when, where and how it needs to occur to be relevant and engaging to EACH student’s goals, needs, and interests, with educators and other experts from the community. #satchat
A1 a colleague of mine recently listened to a webinar about executive functioning. When mentioned how classrooms are over stimulated and children are more distracted. #satchat
Much like we talk about technology integration not being about the “stuff”; traditional vs. modern classrooms can’t be about the stuff either. Ex- having flexible seating doesn’t necessarily mean that there aren’t ineffective instructional practices being used. #satchat
A2 I guess we think about technology infusion because technology can be leveraged to meet the needs of individuals and small groups of students. Also powerful tool for formative assessment #satchat
A2 The modern classroom is centered around what’s best for the kids to learn, explore and create in, not what’s best for the teachers to teach in. #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
A2. Modern education has shifted from an emphasis on fact memorization through ‘drill and kill’ and ‘sage on the stage’ teaching styles to a focus on higher-order thinking and future-ready skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. #satchat
Hello, my fellow educators. My name is Manny, and I’m a reading and writing advocate from the Rio Grande Valley in the wonderful state of Texas. #satchat
What does that look like? To me "traditional" is stand-and-deliver, desks in rows, worksheets, lecture, little collaboration, "stay-in-your-seat" atmospheres. I've seen plenty. Never seen successful ones. #satchat
A2 A modern classroom can be a little noisy at times and can seem a little chaotic for someone who is used to the traditional classroom. My kids spend most of their day on the move in collaboration with others. #satchat
It’s 2019! We are not training kids to be compliant workers on an assembly line. It’s about time we rethink how a classroom can best support & inspire creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. #satchat 💡
A1: My training to be a teacher (many, many years ago) included a discussion on setting up the classroom. It was all about organization, need rows, very formulaic and not personalized or individualized. #satchat
A2-Maybe schools have a variety of room types depending on student need. Students who grow up in chaotic homes may find comfort in the traditional structure.#satchat
I started T’ing in a science classroom in a model middle school in 1975 - 2 person trapezoid tables - class could rearrange in less than a minute for activities, whole group, partner learning - desks in rows always felt like class clutter after that ‘75 opportunity #satchat
A2: In a modern classroom I've seen:
Flexible seating
Personalized learning opportunities
Individual, small, large group learning
Students taking control of their learning
#satchat
Clarity-- this share is focused on the belief that teachers in traditional classrooms care about kids-- that maybe they just do not understand or have not had the support in making the contemporary research based shifts -- How can we work to solve this dilemma? #satchat
A1 Positives-inspiring passion & dedication of teachers to understand & translate contemporary research on how kids learn We need to support all Ts in understanding b/c some CRs are still doing too much on the left of this graphic in contrast to the research (negatives) #satchat
A2: A modern classroom is student-focused as opposed to teacher-focused. It emphasizes student voice, collaboration and on social-emotional learning. #satchat
A2. Schools are attempting to align their physical spaces with contemporary pedagogical philosophy i.e., flexible classroom spaces organically integrate technology, helping Ts better engage Ss and facilitate the mix of independent, small-group and whole-class learning. #satchat
A2: student driven, meeting needs of ss not teachers or schools. 2 way communication, technology for deeper thinking, movement intentionally built into the day #satchat
A2. Takes the learning where the learning goes, often outside the defined curriculum and school building.
Relies on the teacher to be a learner and adjust on the fly to meet learning needs, not just learner needs.
#satchat
Yes! An environment that blurs the lines between "school" and the real world...what we are preparing students for, after all (today and tomorrow). #SatChat
It’s got to be about the students. The students in our classrooms today are very different than the students in the classrooms our minds are thinking about when we say “traditional” #satchat
A2: Learner-focused. We design lessons with a focus on engagement and meeting the needs of all students, not just covering a topic. In other words, we plan for deep learning, not retention of facts. #satchat
A2. Modern classrooms put student needs at the center where teachers teach not ways that are easy for them but use methods that help kids learn the best. #satchat
A2. They're busy...Kids are learning together and facilitate their learning. There's reflection on Ts end and Ss end. Isolation is Done. Ongoing goals for learning and kids do want to see progress. Ts are open to growth, feedback and feedback from Ss as well #satchat
A2 The modern classroom is centered around what’s best for the kids to learn, explore and create in, not what’s best for the teachers to teach in. #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
A2. Typically, a modern classroom incorporates three key elements: (1) connected devices e.g., such as notebooks; (2) audiovisual tools e.g., touch-screen displays; and (3) purposeful furniture e.g., standing desks. #satchat
A1 agile learning spaces provide flexibility to become another technology and practice in a teacher’s tool belt / capability to shift into individual, small, whole group learning sometimes simultaneously - trad classrooms support a “one trick pony” approach #satchat
A2: a focus on higher-order thinking and future-ready skills- critical thinking & problem solving. +flexible spaces, tech integration, mix of independent, small group & whole class learning #satchat
A2 Characteristics of a "modern classroom"
➡️Teacher is given the freedom 2 fail forward & B able 2 observe admins doing the same
➡️No desks in rows/columns
➡️A space that allows movement
➡️Safe & Inclusive! #LGBTQ@GLSEN SafeSpace Stickers, Bilingual Posters
#satchat
Exactly!
This is why I've always loved reading/writing workshop. Ss have voice & choice, follow their interests & the teacher is the guide on the side, conferencing & pushing them forward.
#SatChat
A2: Flexibility, student voice, high expectations but with the understand the expectations are personalized. No matter how modern or traditional - caring for your students well being = #1 #satchat
A2: Flexibility, students talking, students learning rigorous material at their own pace are all part of the ultimate classroom. Also, assessments are about students demonstrating what they know not what they don’t. #satchat
A1: Traditional classrooms to me means traditional relationships being built. In person, genuine conversations, and the ability to see the “I need help” face or the “ah ha!” moments! #satchat
Hey thanks June! When we wrote @TimelessLrng the idea of flexible, agile learning space was a key foundational theme underpinning changing learning pathways #satchat
In reply to
@aimnoncat, @Getting_Smart, @TimelessLrng
A2 The modern classroom is centered around what’s best for the kids to learn, explore and create in, not what’s best for the teachers to teach in. #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
A2 A modern classroom can be a little noisy at times and can seem a little chaotic for someone who is used to the traditional classroom. My kids spend most of their day on the move in collaboration with others. #satchat
I think it comes back to the educator leading & facilitating the learning. I think we need to be cautious about painting with broad strokes... all “traditional” practices are ineffective; truth is, I’ve seen a bunch of “modern” practices being used ineffectively. #satchat
A2 A modern classroom can be a little noisy at times and can seem a little chaotic for someone who is used to the traditional classroom. My kids spend most of their day on the move in collaboration with others. #satchat
Within boundaries of course. Students can’t think tooooooo critically because it might threaten the status quo. Rarely are teachers ok with students asking critical questions of which Ts are unprepared to answer #satchat
A2. Modern classrooms also have connected educators who learn from others about best practices and constantly get feedback from kids and adjust to their needs. #satchat
A2: Modern classrooms emphasize skill acquisition and a problem-based approach, and treat students as competent and capable. In a modern classroom, teachers understand the importance of building community and addressing social-emotional as well as academic needs. #satchat
A2: To quote @cultofpedagogy, "To learn, kids need to DO something." I think that in a "modern" classroom, Ts and Ss incorporate 4 Cs along with other student attributes. #satchat
A2. Faster feedback! Failing forward! Growth mindset! Iterative design!
I believe that the BEST classrooms of today are intentionally designed to offer a S.A.F.E. learning environment.

Learning how to be productive and collaborative are excellent soft skills. Students should learn to self-regulate... a key to independence. #satchat#IGNITE your passion.
A2: I think characteristics of a modern classroom can be similar to that of a traditional classroom, but the mindset of the T has changed and evolved. Opportunities for creativity, collaboration, voice, choice flexible seating are provided and it’s more S centered not T #satchat
Yes, a lab-like environment where kids have an authentic purpose. I implemented the model of a newsroom. If students have defined roles such as reporters, editors, writers, layout, photography, and real deadlines to meet, it becomes a hub of purposeful activity. #satchat
A2: To quote @cultofpedagogy, "To learn, kids need to DO something." I think that in a "modern" classroom, Ts and Ss incorporate 4 Cs along with other student attributes. #satchat
A1: Negative for traditional classroom is lack of student voice and collaboration between student-led groups on investigations, projects, performances, etc...#satchat
Yes Chris... being connected is definitely an element of a modern classroom. #satchat If you’re not connected your sphere of influence and network of support is limited to the people you see face-to-face
The question for me is always “which students” because students are not all the same, yet decisions get made which tend to always center the same students #satchat
A2:modern classrooms integrate technology, have flexible learning and design, collaboration and the teacher is facilitating while Ss are driving their own learning and progress #satchat
#satchat A1 Traditional classrooms were confined to the walls of the room and school; Modern classroom can flatten the walls of both with effective use of tech. Current, teacher as facilitator, students active - more people engaged in discussion.
Modern classrooms are comfortable, invite collaboration, and are often noisy. I bet people here have plenty of great pics of amazing modern classrooms. #satchat
As a history teacher I always have a difficult time w/framing this as a traditional-modern conflict, as if we in the present have all the answers (chronological snobbery). It is probably better to discuss good and bad pedagogy, then the appearance of era is irrelevant #satchat
So true Julie / it’s a different kind of management that’s needed in flexible learning by design - sometimes more about managing our own urge for control vs the kids at work - a balancing act #satchat
A3: Movable Furniture. Having the ability to easily move desks/chairs helps to foster collaboration and communication in the classroom and gives Ts flexibility to set-up the classroom to meet the needs of the lesson. #SatChat
A2: “modern” classrooms thrive on authentic learning experiences where students aren’t just doing something because it’s in the book #makeitreal#satchat
A1. One +: #students negotiating the social structure we all share; this interaction is imperative, as it's often their only in our 21st century digital world; One -: Ss need more individualized instruction at their own pace, esp if we look to build skills #satchat
In a "modern classroom", everyone is a learner. There are high expectations for learning, but not by an adult standing at the front of the room. "Students" are doing most of the talking (asking questions) and their inquiry drives learning. The teacher is a facilitator. #satchat
A2 Modern classrooms are collaborative spaces where Ss thinking is encouraged and explored - more than one way to solve problems. A place where Ss are taking risks and Ts are taking risks. Energizing, engaging and motivating. #satchat
A2: Collaboration mixed with tech integration. There’s always been tech but we use it differently today with different tech available!
class!
#EDU5720#gradschool#edtech#satchat
A2: NJ High school science teacher with little wiggle room, literally. Being creative with your space, when you can’t rearrange your space the way you want to because you share space and have lab tables - involve students #satchat
A2: I think characteristics of a modern classroom can be similar to that of a traditional classroom, but the mindset of the T has changed and evolved. Opportunities for creativity, collaboration, voice, choice flexible seating are provided and it’s more S centered not T #satchat
A2: In the modern classroom, the kids are driving the learning, rearranging the space, asking the important questions, and changing the world. The space is not as essential as our mindset as educators. Give them the tools & get out of their way! #satchat
A3: Am I allow to say students? Without students, it cannot be the "ultimate classroom" because they would be at the center of what's going on. #satchat
A2: To quote @cultofpedagogy, "To learn, kids need to DO something." I think that in a "modern" classroom, Ts and Ss incorporate 4 Cs along with other student attributes. #satchat
A2 Modern classrooms translating the contemporary research on how kids learn are active & student centered, focused on thinking, driven by student questions about phenomena/problems in world, are culturally responsive, involve multiple modalities, integrate disciplines #satchat
A2. "Modern" classroom allows for student voice & choice. It's less about the structure of the room or location and more about scaffolding for students to learn how to explore & collaborate.
#satchat
Yes - because flexible- active seating - provides ergonomic health support for core muscles and also helps kid sustain attention, and provides choice in comfort #satchat
Yes! I love that environment! Role playing and having responsibility and the ability to see things from a different perspective are so crucial to the learning process #Satchat
A3: Simple: CULTURE. A culture and passion of unrelenting focus on each individual learner as the center of learning. One that uses the strengths of each individual student to create a custom path of growth and success. #satchat
A3: flexible seating is a must. Had several convos with principals and teachers who talked about having this in the classrooms to address the needs of their students so they can focus on learning. #satchat
Maybe instead of focusing on “traditional” or “modern”, we are focusing on the granular level practices... thoughtful lesson design, instruction that’s tailored to meet the needs of the learners before us & opportunities for students to direct & own their learning. #satchat
#satchat A:2 . Learning experiences that help students apply skills and knowledge in new settings are an important part of today's classrooms. #satchat#IGNITE your passion.
A2: “modern” classrooms thrive on authentic learning experiences where students aren’t just doing something because it’s in the book #makeitreal#satchat
A2- depending on the age of students, modern classrooms are more student centered. There are areas for small groups, for individual Ss work, seating available for varying Ss needs (yoga balls, bean bags, stools, etc). It’s an environment created for student empowerment #satchat
A2. A modern classroom is a shift to acquiring, using, and transforming knowledge to action.
Then it's the selection and application of the right tool(s) to accomplish that.
Traditional settings and situations *can* do that. Modern ones FACILITATE this.
#satchat
I think moving from traditional to modern classroom is a continuum. As we give up more & more control, we empower our students. Seeing the positive results helps us move further in this direction.
#satchat
A3: RELATIONSHIPS- when this exists, risks are taken, trust is shared, questions are asked/answered, challenges are faced, courage is expressed vulnerability is shared& collaboration is nurtured by ALL! #satchat
Sound unit well under way. Brought in a real record player a week after anchor phenomenon launch to demo the sound at a constant speed. Very difficult to spin a lazy-Susan with constant speed #scicomm#scitlap#ngsschat
The question is whether you are normative or an outlier. There are outstanding teachers...but they are outstanding because they aren’t the norm. They stand out. Carla Shalaby’s “Troublemakers” got me thinking in this direction #satchat
Agreed-- collaboration & discourse are essentials in the modern classroom-- love the description of a "noisy classroom" used in a positive light #satchat
A2 A modern classroom can be a little noisy at times and can seem a little chaotic for someone who is used to the traditional classroom. My kids spend most of their day on the move in collaboration with others. #satchat
A3: TIME devoted to building relationships! Talk time, play time, getting-to-know-each-other time...the best ‘investment’ in the “ultimate classroom”! 😊 #satchat#JoyfulLeaders#KidsDeserveIt#tlap
Good answer. We often forget that globally there are children learning in living rooms, under trees and in one room schools. In America, we have kids learning in their own kitchens. They succeed because of compassion and passion.#satchat
A3: the “one item” would be the empowered educator who is supported by the district leadership to take risks, foster innovation, and reflect for growth. #satchat
The non-tech item the “ultimate classroom” should have is a clear lesson objective that was developed by the readiness levels of students & that students understand. #satchat
A3: The most important "non-tech" aspect of a modern classroom is an open-minded, reflective, and growth-oriented teacher that is focused on building a rich and engaging learning environment for his/her students. Always has been and always will. #satchat
A3: A non-tech item needed in the ultimate classroom is a teacher who encourages out-of-the-box and independent thinking in addition to genuinely caring about each and every student as a person. #satchat
A3. It would be wonderful to see students engaged in experiences, they couldn’t otherwise have without tech, while thinking at high levels. Ts need help and support to get there, and admin need to understand this can’t happen all the time. #satchat
I’d argue passion can sometimes stunt a students growth. When a Ts passion bulldozes a kid, the S can be shut down and stunt learning. That’s why compassion is salient #satchat
A3: A well trained, innovative thinker who@is passionate about helping children learn. No matter how much tech we get in our classrooms you can’t take the teacher out of teaching. #satchat
A3: Genuine Relationships! Every kid, every parent, every lesson deserves the teacher’s love and in my opinion requires the teacher’s love to thrive! #satchat
A3: Overt kindness. As if it were part of the curriculum, create spaces for kids to explore kindness and empathy their own way. At my school, it's a staple, and we see the results every day. #satchat
Hand-held white boards, post-it notes, index cards, and enough space for learners to maneuver throughout the space, so they can move, communicate, and collaborate with one another. #satchat
Oh, there's modern practice that can be misused, for sure; #edtech, for example. I still can't think of a traditional practice that is impactful. My kids get them daily and absolutely hate them. #satchat
A2: Modern: A shift that focuses on equity- what each individual needs to thrive. An intentional effort to eliminate biases that hinder relationships and perpetuate unsafe spaces for learning. #satchat

Good morning! A1 Good teaching is student focused. I graduated in 1989. Some teachers taught differently, maybe ahead of their time. Whether long ago or now, focusing on the learner is what is important. #satchat
A3) failure - too often is perfection expected and our kids follow along thinking that’s the norm. Failure should be an expectation that leads to@bigger and better things, not a death sentence. #satchat
A3 Construction Paper, magic markers, scissors, tape and glue (I even bring in old boxes for the cardboard for sturdier creations). You would be amazed that even in our highly digital world, kids still love to design and build thing with their hands. #satchat
I tried to set it up so it was real indeed, not just role-playing. The deadlines and accountability were real. If students made errors that went to print, online or on air, they owned it. Editing was no longer a nice thing to be able to do —it became an essential skill. #satchat
Q2: Using new technology, not just to use it and “fit in” with students but to actually use it effectively to enhance teaching methods, communication, mentoring, technical skills, impacts.
#satchat
I think moving from traditional to modern classroom is a continuum. As we give up more & more control, we empower our students. Seeing the positive results helps us move further in this direction.
#satchat
@ScottRRocco A2: As I am striving to create a more modern classroom I am shifting the focus from me being responsible for disseminating information and content, to the students leading the investigating and researching.#satchat
I love that we have separate chairs. I can say "circle up!" and everyone grabs a chair and is on the move into their little (or one big) group. #satchat
I would caution that with "is being made." We have to be careful that we don't allow "student-centered" to become another ed buzzword that gets hijacked by the status quo. This helps to clarify: https://t.co/6tCbX3kpjE#satchat#whyLCE
Sadly our field misses the mark because we tend to #alllivesmatter education and see what we do through a lens in which we treat all the students the same without recognizing their unique differences, especially when it comes to experiences #satchat
A2: Welcoming, engaging, joyful, accepting, inviting, inclusive, challenging, tech accessible, dynamic, grounded in the realities of our real world. #satchat
Let's continue to create the "ultimate classroom"
Q4: If you could put 1 tech item in the "ultimate classroom" what would it be and how would you use it?
#satchat
@ScottRRocco A2: As I am striving to create a more modern classroom I am shifting the focus from me being responsible for disseminating information and content, to the students leading the investigating and researching.#satchat
A3 One #edtech item to add to an "ultimate classroom"➡️Video Camera
It expands the classroom to the 🌎
In my class, we've played #MysterySkype, spoke with inventors at @Google, interviewed #CompSci Ss in college
It strengthens soft skills and expands all potential
#satchat
A passion of learning; a passion for teaching. How the passion for teaching expressed itself is what you refer to here. If a teacher has passion for both, the teacher models the excitement of discovery and growth. #satchat@3_DLeadership
I’d argue passion can sometimes stunt a students growth. When a Ts passion bulldozes a kid, the S can be shut down and stunt learning. That’s why compassion is salient #satchat
A3. Tangible: Time for self-reflection. Cannot tell you how much more learning is happening since I stopped assigning grades under the cover of nightfall and chose instead to bring students into the process.
Intangible? Strong relationships. First, last, always.
#satchat

I used to do that with debates and, even better, mock trials in my English classes. Students loved it and would throw themselves into various roles. Finding evidence from texts has a purpose through these exercises, not to mention public speaking, organization of ideas. #satchat
#satchat . Do we have a good measure that gauges relationships in our schools? How would that look? Interest surveys... ratings about how students feel about their school & teachers? Can we get to this through a typical metric such as grades, attendance, suspensions, activities?
I agree! My favorite teachers were student focused, built relationships, cared more about me than the subject they were teaching, made me want to be there, that's not a modern teacher, but a great one. #satchat
A3 Construction Paper, magic markers, scissors, tape and glue (I even bring in old boxes for the cardboard for sturdier creations). You would be amazed that even in our highly digital world, kids still love to design and build thing with their hands. #satchat
A4 Any device that allows for sharing between students and between student and teacher. So valuable to give students a way to collaborate with each other, respond to questions at their own pace, and get teacher feedback while working on assignments. #satchat
A4: Accessible devices. Ss need way to connect and deepen knowledge, apply the content, and learn how it relates to life beyond the walls of the classroom. #SatChat
A3:The ultimate classroom has a teacher in it that’s willing to continually grow, to push & challenge their own learning and thinking, to always do #WB4K, to provide Ss with opps to be creative, collaborative and to problem solve. And ultimately, someone who LOVES kids! #satchat
A4. One "tech" item is anything that allows access to the internet. A big part of my job is teaching students HOW to explore the internet & evaluate what they find.
#satchat
@dmvelliaris Appreciate the thought-provoking graphics you're sharing this morning. These could make some great conversation prompts with teachers...in say, a gallery walk about "kids today". #satchat
We’ve worked very hard to build this type of supportive culture in our district and it is now paying dividends for the student learning experience as well as for teacher satisfaction with their work environment. #Satchat
A3: A passionate educator who is present, dedicated to the work and believes in every students’ ability to learn...all of which is evident in the high quality instruction. #satchat
A3 Masking tape and measuring tape. How better to mark the actual sizeof a Komodo dragon on the floor, or the size of a black bear on the wall??? #satchat
Let's continue to create the "ultimate classroom"
Q4: If you could put 1 tech item in the "ultimate classroom" what would it be and how would you use it?
#satchat
Agreed-- it definitely can! Here is the source Source: National Research Council. (2015). Guide to Implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (pp. 8-9). Washington, DC:
National Academies Press. https://t.co/WSzFVe39Y3#satchat
A2: Welcoming, engaging, joyful, accepting, inviting, inclusive, challenging, tech accessible, dynamic, grounded in the realities of our real world. #satchat
A4: 💻A cart of Chromebooks that are domain provisioned for Ss to use G Suite for Education on to take lessons beyond what can be done without them and move students across the rigor divide. #satchat
A4: I would put a 1:1 device in the ultimate classroom and use it to help Ss take ownership of their learning through access to information, communication, and collaboration tools #satchat
A3: Non-tech item needed in classrooms? A wellness spot to de-stress. Kids need to be taught healthy coping strategies early & often. They shouldn’t have to leave the classroom to check in, breathe deeply, stretch, and regroup. #satchat@AlishaDelorenzo@mrnavas@DisruptedTv
A2 A modern classroom will radiate an environmental flexibility and collaboration. Areas for learners to work in groups and be comfortable in their learning. More than the appearance, their will be a culture of risk taking and support. #satchat
I get what you’re saying & I don’t necessarily disagree. But, as an example, I would say basal reading programs are “traditional” & generally ineffective but I’ve seen great teachers make them work amazingly well. #satchat
I agree. I like to read on my couch, type at a desk, discuss bills with my wife at the kitchen table. Reasonable to have choices like that for our students!
Truth—
I don’t really ENJOY the bills conversation —🤣
#satchat
Amazing to consider how "the basics" can take a learning space from good to great. These represent a shift in thinking. Kids need to move, talk, and engage with material (and one another) in many ways, to learn deeply. #satchat
A4: Whatever technology is available and best suited to support the custom growth of each student. Just like any other tool, it must be squarely focused on individual needs for individual learning. #satchat
As a district administrator, when’s the last time you reviewed your purchasing process? Are you still using paper to write out and approve requisitions? #satchat#findthesavings
A4- I always found it calming listening to raindrops falling or waves of the ocean crashing. Having a device that can facilitate a method to soothe students while they work would be in my ultimate classroom. #satchat
A4: One must have item for the ultimate classroom? Internet connected computer that includes a webcam and microphone. How would I use it? Connecting my class to experts and other classrooms through tools like @EmpaticoOrg (https://t.co/xrhU4BemCt) and @SkypeClassroom#satchat
A3: A passionate educator who is present, dedicated to the work and believes in every students’ ability to learn...all of which is evident in the high quality instruction. #satchat
Yes--we use these supply drawers for many easily accessible student creation, exploration supplies: #satchat Paper drawers are still valuable for storing cardboard, colored paper, posters too.
Let's continue to create the "ultimate classroom"
Q4: If you could put 1 tech item in the "ultimate classroom" what would it be and how would you use it?
#satchat
#satchat Modern classroom ... PD for engaging teachers in the science content they teach as adult learners - builds confidence in content and translates to stepping outside the box in the classroom
Q3: A mindfulness tent helps students self-regulate in the classroom and is a wonderful addition to the ultimate classroom https://t.co/1feLy7Br9m#satchat
A4: this may sound boring, but a computer cart, we are not 1:1 school, having students do their own research, look things up, we also do a lot of computer modeling and simulations. A student centered classroom needs laptops #satchat
The challenge is to organize all those materials in easily accessible ways--I'm always reaching for that particularly as our curriculum changes. #positivechallenge#satchat
I agree. I like to read on my couch, type at a desk, discuss bills with my wife at the kitchen table. Reasonable to have choices like that for our students!
Truth—
I don’t really ENJOY the bills conversation —🤣
#satchat
A4: One tech item for the "ultimate classroom" is definitely a T willing to elevate S learning with tech, so one thing that can be had in all classrooms now is @Wakelet ! There's so much power and versatility here. Ts need programs/devices that are versatile/affordable. #satchat
A4 - ultimate modern classroom tech item? small laptop or chromebook with camera and the ability to record. This gives students access to endless information, opportunities to create #satchat -
#satchat A3 3D printer AND cardboard, masking tape, rulers, sketch pads...books, magazines, newspapers, laptop, tablets. Resources that support creative thinking, problem solving and design.
Q3: A mindfulness tent helps students self-regulate in the classroom and is a wonderful addition to the ultimate classroom https://t.co/1feLy7T2xW#satchat
For me, I think if we are going to bring tech into the classrooms I’d love to see it connect classrooms with other schools within city limits and community so that more opportunities exist to expand our thinking locally #satchat
Me too! I guess I should be careful not to put the kiddos to sleep. Then again, if they need to sleep, what need are they not meeting? Maybe they could have a place to rest and then come back and join the class. Thoughts? #satchat
A4: if I could include just 1 tech item in a classroom it would be a chrome book cart... Placed to the side so the maximum area of the room could be used for student collaboration. #satchat
A4: I’d put a VR Lab so that students can immersively explore the world beyond the classroom- integrating in all contents and fostering global awareness and empathy while providing real world application of their learning #ARVRinEDU . #satchat
A4. @EquityMaps! Imagine a @fitbit for class discussion.
Beautiful, easy to read display dashboards provide detailed analytics of how efficiently your classroom is sharing the conversational equity. Eye opening and super easy to help students pinpoint how to improve. #satchat
A3: Classrooms need structures & tools that foster healthy identity development. Provocations for critical thinking, arrangements for collaboration, and resources that validate the diverse experiences of learners. #satchat
Schools really need more space too--we're a bit squished in those classrooms for modern day learning--seems so strange to squish 25 or more Ss in a classroom when many go home to places w/lots of personal space. #outdated#satchat
Anxiety among small children and adults is growing in our country. It is worth looking into for the emotional health of our students. #satchat#IGNITE your passion.
I’ve been working on that with my Business Teachers, where we have a class of students who are looking to re-Open the school store. #satchat#makeitreal
Great response! The tool I use today may not be (and likely will not be) the tool that is best for tomorrow. We are in the midst of a 4th industrial revolution, one that creates explosive change on a daily basis. #satchat
I dgaf if they are minors. They need to be identified. What school are they from? Who was chaperoning them? This is one of the most horrific displays of ignorance, racism & disrespect. My god. I feel sick.
What if we equipped each teacher with a go pro or other tech device to record segments of their instruction to reflect & grow in their practice as they work to move to a more contemporary research-based classroom #satchat
Let's continue to create the "ultimate classroom"
Q4: If you could put 1 tech item in the "ultimate classroom" what would it be and how would you use it?
#satchat
Many non-tech, classroom items being mentioned in #satchat are still tech: scissors, writing utensils, many art supplies, paperclips... tech doesn't mean that it has to be electronic or plugged in. #amirite?
A4. Ultimate classroom would contain academic challenges that provides ways for kids to collaborate-create-test-fail-reflect and adjust to test again to solve problems. Kids must also communicate how they solved the problem.? #satchat
A4: I have Great tech Integration in my district, I would be able to do the same amount of rapid feedback, student-teacher, student-student communication without each student having their own device and really reliable wireless #satchat#cbsd
Nothing like a real book! Lots of neuro research starting to come out about paper vs tech for kids related to reading. I am starting to explore that area more. #satchat
Tee Hee... I am guilty of the 'blah blah' myself from time to time. Need to videotape ourselves in action. The videotape is a great place for self-reflection. #satchat#Ignite we can all learn to be better. Thanks for the reminder.
This is an important point. Kids without bed times, kids on social media at all hours, kids without structure at home, need to learn how to rest and recharge. Teachers have so many gaps to fill sometimes. #satchat
Me too! I guess I should be careful not to put the kiddos to sleep. Then again, if they need to sleep, what need are they not meeting? Maybe they could have a place to rest and then come back and join the class. Thoughts? #satchat
We've been doing short mindfulness meditations several times a day in all classrooms. Ts see the difference in their Ss (and I would add: in themselves)
#satchat
Absolutely. Maybe all it takes is a courageous teacher who is willing to make this commitment, and then invest in students, asking them what they think. Kids will know how to organize these materials, even more so because it's THEIR space. #satchat
One tech item for the ultimate classroom is a teleporter for hands on learning. Ok now to reality webcam to real people outside their community and to connect. #satchat
A3 One non-tech item for a modern classroom/school comes from the more tradtional one. Longer recess/lunch time & unstructured time for student socialization #satchat
A4: Social media. I would show students the way to effectively use it for meaningful activities. Communicating with other classrooms, topical experts, etc. through online discussion groups. It’s still social but with a greater purpose.
#satchat
Let's continue to create the "ultimate classroom"
Q4: If you could put 1 tech item in the "ultimate classroom" what would it be and how would you use it?
#satchat
A5: Collaborative groups, with space for independent work. Students working together is important, but they also need a space to work independently if they choose to. Stations for resources are important, so Ss know where to get materials. #SatChat
#satchat Fullan reminds us technology is not the right driver, instruction is. The laptop is just a tool for learning and connecting. Avoid having kids "wired, but disconnected" #EDLR5308
A5 The ultimate classroom would be organized for flexibility, student centered, and have a curriculum that adapted to student interest and exploration. #satchat
A4: Tech that allows students to access files, websites, programs that enhance student learning through creativity, collaboration, and higher-order thinking (Google supported tech like Chromebooks) #satchat#edtech#class! #EDU5720
Plus they advertise themselves - when Ss see the covers, see them grouped by genre, it helps them discover other books they love. Being surrounded by books in every classroom helps create a culture of reading.
#SatChat
A4. Interactive whiteboards are versatile tools, which can be used to teach anyone of any age. They support most multi-media materials, such as images, texts, audio and video documents from various input devices, including desktops, laptops, DVD players, USB drives. #satchat
A4: One tech item for the “ultimate classroom”...accessible, wireless connectivity for all students, with the necessary instructional support, so that the world is truly flattened and we are all learning with/from each other, globally. #satchat
A2: To me, modern classrooms must are designed to foster social emotional learning and academic learning for all. There should be purpose and direct instruction, but also foster joy, choice, flow, and creation—play. All of this is wrapped up with time for reflection.#satchat
A5: the ultimate classroom would be organized by the learners so that they can own the learning space. One of the scariest things to do as an educator is to relinquish some of the control- but you have to trust in the learners! #satchat
A5: Ss would be in flexible seating and paired in collaborative groups. I want to have diversity in the S groups so they can build their own teams. I love to incorporate PBL to challenge students to think differently and utilize their team members #satchat
A5: The ultimate classroom would be organized so that it is a safe place for students to learn and take risks. Physically, the space would be flexible to enable Ss to modify for the variety of work/learning they would be doing #satchat
Definitely an area to explore. We have yoga once a week for Ts and Ss together. Seeing HS Ss engaging and learning strategies to help them long after the class is amazing. #satchat
A4 An important item for all classrooms is a teacher who knows how to use tech to enhance learning for Ss.
That said...how cool is this microscope that shows specimens on any computer you hook up to!!! #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
That's why my ideal school has lots of various spaces--spaces to make movies, work independently, collaborative creative work, outdoor classrooms. . . . . #satchat
The thing about #satchat that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
A4. Ultimate classroom would contain academic challenges that provides ways for kids to collaborate-create-test-fail-reflect and adjust to test again to solve problems. Kids must also communicate how they solved the problem.? #satchat
A5: Learner-centered distributed leadership per a shared vision, radical collaboration, free and open exchange of ideas based on mutual respect and trust, and a culture of constant, rapid, and localized innovation. #satchat#openwaylearning
Let's continue to create the "ultimate classroom"
Q4: If you could put 1 tech item in the "ultimate classroom" what would it be and how would you use it?
#satchat
A4: I would use my 1 tech tool and stick w the #students. Their brain is their “tech”. Their creativity to take whatever resources surround them and do something amazing is always so impressive. #SatChat
The ultimate classroom for me would allow the flexibility to easily switch from whole group instruction, group stations, and areas for individual work and even have the ability to have all 3 going on at once. #satchat
So after an entire day of Buzzfeed’s fake anti Trump story about POTUS and Cohen being at the top of my “For You” on twitter the special counsel’s refute of the story- you know the actual news- was there for about five minutes today. #satchat#FakeNewsBuzzFeed#FakeNewsMedia
A4 An important item for all classrooms is a teacher who knows how to use tech to enhance learning for Ss.
That said...how cool is this microscope that shows specimens on any computer you hook up to!!! #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
Yes!!! Just because the space allows for collaboration doesn’t mean the entire lesson MUST be a collaborative experience for students. There needs to be time for individuals to work alone. #satchat
A5: Collaborative groups, with space for independent work. Students working together is important, but they also need a space to work independently if they choose to. Stations for resources are important, so Ss know where to get materials. #SatChat
A5 I LOVE using real furniture in the classroom! It's fun to set them up to create zones for different types of tasks. #satchat The reading corner coffee house style would be the first requirement.
A5: ask the students this question and come up with a design together. If they’ve been part of the process they’ll own it , will be proud of it and will motivate them to be there and learn #satchat
A5: I could think of many “ideal” classroom set-ups but really couldn’t decide on what to do without the students’ input, afterall they’re the ones doing the work! #satchat
A5. There's a general meeting place, but lots of centers for kids to learn in partners, teams, or individually. I'd want and try now to organize on what works for us in our class. I want the feedback from kids when possible. #satchat
If we really think about it why do the best corporations have amazing spaces and most schools are old and outdated--real problem. The restrooms at most businesses are far better than any space in most elementary schools--#wecandobetter#satchat
A5 classrooms that are organized by content or topic are more easily accessible to students. They can find the math objective, math key vocabulary, visuals, etc. in one spot and the science ones in a another. Less teacher stuff on the walls. Reduce clutter #satchat
Q5: The "ultimate classroom" should be organized to best suit the Ss & subject. Generally, room to move, different areas to work & sit, plus being able to access supplies & assistance would be ideal. I've accomplished some of that. #satchat
A5: Regardless of the seating or arrangement, tech or no tech, routines, procedures and clear expectations and best practices organize both Ts and Ss 😊 #satchat
A5: the ultimate classroom would be organized by the learners so that they can own the learning space. One of the scariest things to do as an educator is to relinquish some of the control- but you have to trust in the learners! #satchat
A5: The ultimate, organized classroom doesn't have all of the "stuff". Keep it simple, because too many things on walls etc. becomes wallpaper for some and too much for others that they lose focus. #satchat
#SatChat
An hour ea of traditional math & ELA instruction based on SKILL (not age/grade) followed by specials & lunch/recess. Then 2+ hours of integrated PBL in classroom-sized cubicles w/ sound absorbing 3/4 walls that allows movement & learning betw these project pods
#satchat
A4: orgainzed with a curriculum that has flexibility for student exploration (science classroom) movable desks and learning spaces - maybe even 2 divided spaces, one for collaboration and one for individual quiet work (use the hallway for my send space right now) #satchat
A5: The "ultimate classroom" is not organized within or not limited to the walls around it. It needs to connect with resources, learning, and people outside of it. I think it needs to have a direct connection to the school's library.

#satchat Also, hello! Joining the chat late from pre-Snowmageddon NY State. There are no loaves of bread left on the store shelves! It’s a great time for shared learning via Twitter!
A5 classrooms that are organized by content or topic are more easily accessible to students. They can find the math objective, math key vocabulary, visuals, etc. in one spot and the science ones in a another. Less teacher stuff on the walls. Reduce clutter #satchat
A5: I would organize the classroom based on multiple intelligences. I would have an area for all my students, whether it is to collaborate, do independent work or engage in hands-on learning etc. https://t.co/h1JZYF4R4a#satchat#edchat
This is a topic I could engage around all day long, but then make plans to act. Isn't it about time we're talking about it, nearly two decades into the new century/millennium? #satchat
A5 I would organize the room with the Ss input. Whatever works best for them to feel motivated, creative, comfortable, and open to learning.
I’d also ditch the teacher desk! #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
🚨Don't wait! There's still time to get your vote in! 🚨
☑️ Vote for us for @iste People's Choice! It's sure to be a great session!
We will be sharing how we as an #appledistinguishedschool prepare our learners to be successful!
#AppleEDUchat#satchat#edchat#ISTE19
To do that, we first need to make sure students are safe. We can’t presume they are. That’s what I’m reflecting on. Some of our students are so challenged outside the classroom (and within) that our challenges could be the tipping point. #satchat
A5: The "ultimate classroom" is not organized within or not limited to the walls around it. It needs to connect with resources, learning, and people outside of it. I think it needs to have a direct connection to the school's library.
#satchat
Good Morning, #satchat. As a parent now, I just realized that I really don't care as much about "the ultimate classroom" as much as I care that there's a teacher in that space who loves teaching/learning and knows/cares about my kid. That's it for now. https://t.co/QeAb3WYNqv
Me too. #satchat I actually have a group of kids working with me this year to share some ideas and proposals with our admin. My hope is they listen to these kids.
A5. I mixed choice-guided small groups with activity stations & a splash of gamification to create #QRBreakIN. Most of my classes play out like a giant REVERSE escape room, where teams “compete” to solve a series of asynchronous puzzle centers.
https://t.co/iyKPKpkYxa#satchat
Q5: The "ultimate classroom" should be organized to best suit the Ss & subject. Generally, room to move, different areas to work & sit, plus being able to access supplies & assistance would be ideal. I've accomplished some of that. #satchat
"Lately, many Americans are enduring such days with stunning regularity, and coming to terms with this irrefutable truth: Hateful people who are bent on being hateful will wear you the heck out."

Indeed! The best "organization" is built on a culture that creates and ethos of adaptive learning to occur wherever, whenever, and however it needs to occur for individual students. That culture can't be restricted to classroom (or school) walls. #satchat
A5 Organize the ultimate classroom with having flexible seating arrangements and student collaboration centers along with a discovery section for deeper learning. #satchat
A5: My ultimate classroom would have flexible seating and space for students to collaborate organized in a way which felt physically and emotionally safe for all. I would also include a calm corner with tools for emotional regulation when needed. #satchat
A5: If we really believe in student choice and student voice, empower our students by giving them maximum input into organizing the “ultimate classroom”! Their ideas WILL surprise and delight us! #satchat
Q3 in our #socstudme slow chat this month about the new book "Why Learn History..." Take a look below and share you thoughts! Don't forget to include A3 and #socstudme in your response! (Actual question on the 2nd pic) @madisonteacher@maineteacher
A5 @FutureReady had us design a dream classroom. It included tables, standing desks, large pillows, Bean bags, charging stations, and areas for the CRT to work with small groups. More of a cafe style look instead of rows and desks. #satchat
#satchat A4 Ultimate classroom is not only the physical items but esp. the culture. Ss set norms for behavior Ts scaffold learning which promote inquiry, discovery and discussion, Ss have choice and self-assess work
The ultimate classroom starts with a positive learning attitude ... kids want to come to learn not because of the comfy seats ... if your class sucks without a couch it will still suck with a couch. #satchat
A5 I try and set up my room according to how my kids learn best. I usually change the set up of my room several times a year. Lots of changing but Ive found it livens things up. #satchat
To do that, we first need to make sure students are safe. We can’t presume they are. That’s what I’m reflecting on. Some of our students are so challenged outside the classroom (and within) that our challenges could be the tipping point. #satchat
Good Q! I teach HS and I was thinking about this as I’ve been wanting to change my room up; told I can’t do because of tech wiring constrictions; to reconfigure HS classrooms would take a major financial investments/support by districts #satchat

A5: The ultimate classroom should be organized by student voice and the ways they learn best. Amplify their voice and respond to their needs. It’s their space. #satchat
A6: The ultimately classroom would focus on learning and how to best meet the needs of the Ss, The classroom would be Student-Centered, and the teacher would be a resource in the classroom #SatChat
Yes, I meet with Ss twice a year to see what's going well, what needs to change, ideas they have. Then we try to implement them. They often have amazing ideas!
#SatChat

A5: I know this sounds wild, but have the students organize the chaos, the events, the guest speakers & the resources. They are much better at keeping track of their space and taking ownership when we step to the side. We have to give this over to them. #satchat#stuvoice
Long overdue Dennis. I had this conversation with our Ts last year, and this group has pushed my thinking....there is a lot I have learned in this chat....but it would be more beneficial to have this conversation w Ss?
#satchat
A5: The ultimate, organized classroom doesn't have all of the "stuff". Keep it simple, because too many things on walls etc. becomes wallpaper for some and too much for others that they lose focus. #satchat
A5 @LucyCalkins says it best. Keep creative environments bland. Let the sparks come from the students... not the bulletin boards. Keep the "ultimate classroom" uncluttered, clean, and open for students to shine.
#Satchat
A5: its a classroom where the learning and collaboration with others extends beyond the classroom. Where the learning can take place or continue any place or time. #Satchat
A5: the ultimate classroom provides students with a wide array of resources and choices to create opportunities for students to take control of the learning and find their passion. #passionEdu#satchat.
A6: I would love to incorporate PBL and station rotations for S to experience. Teaching would be done in-person and through playlists to support differentiated instruction and scaffolding #satchat
@ScottRRocco A5: My “ultimate” classroom would be organized first by strong relationships within the classroom, and then second, by building strong connections to resources and experts outside the classroom. #satchat
A6: Teaching & learning would occur through a classroom community of learners where Ss and Ts work together through carefully facilitated inquiry that builds on strengths & knowledge of all learners #satchat

A5: the ultimate classroom is not confined by space, it is when any space becomes a learning space - student’s home, library, internet, field trip, etc. life is a classroom. #satchat
Thinking beyond classrooms as a physical space, opens up possibilities to connect students with others outside our walls (physical and mental). Freedom to reorganize space is important to classroom dynamics, but moving beyond our room is world-changing. #schoollibrary#satchat

A5: flexibility in “periods”. Some lessons need more time. Access to a tech Genius Bar all the time. Tech is changing-Ts want to integrate but can’t learn everything fast enough. access 2 a tech specialist frees the T from fear of a failing lesson due 2 tech issues #satchat
#satchat content would be different to address standards. But still categories for the subjects taught in the classroom if the teacher has more than one, anchor charts & word wall that support student learning. Anything else?
Listen to the children.

A6: Just in time support for every student, every day. Whatever is needed in a collaborative environment to maximize the growth and creativity of each individual learner...a place where every students loves to be there, loves to learn there. #satchat

Q6 A combination of student paced & allow them to express their interest while still exposing them to the knowledge the world has to offer. There is a point to curriculum, but sometime it strangles both teacher & student from having the freedom to explore #satchat
A6: The ultimate classroom's teaching and learning should:
- create a culture of respect for teachers and students
- be able to meet the individual needs of all learners
- be exciting
- be engaging
- make students want to come back tomorrow!
#satchat
A6 Teaching and learning needs to be a best fit for each individual student. The ultimate classroom would allow for time to support student needs while also challenging students at their own level. #satchat
We are stuck in our traditional classroom environments with 30+ high school students in a room, multiple teachers moving in and out from block to block. Sometimes there are posters on the walls... but that is about it!!!!!#satchat#IGNITE your passion. Barriers to evolving.

A6: in the ultimate classroom, no teaching or learning would be attempted until time is spent building relationships. We ditch all traditional “first day” activities to spend the day team building and relationship forming. #satchat
A6: In the ultimate classroom both teaching and learning would take place on the students’ end. As educators we teach, but should also empower! #satchat
A6: Teachers facilitate learning, nurture risk taking, encourage creativity and assist Ss in finding their best learning tools and methods, Ts nurture curiousity and a #growthmindset#satchat
I started in a school w/no walls--it was too noisy. I think the better solution is to have a school with a wide variety of optimal learning spaces--some that are very quiet and some that are more open. #satchat
A6: light on teaching heavy on co-learning and modeling learning. The resources are out there. Let’s teach kids how to learn. Process over content. Learning is exciting and learning with and from students creates a beautiful learning environment. #satchat
A6: Most teaching would be in small groups or individually. I love walking into a classroom and having to look for the teacher because she's on the floor with a group or small table w/S's. Student centered, teacher facilitated. #satchat#learnlap style!
A6. Student teams work at their own pace to solve the puzzle for their selected “chamber” of an asynchronous reverse escape room (old school centers with a twist).
Teacher floats between stations to provide on the fly support and scaffolding.

A5 -- I have 46 students in my largest history class, teach in an old band room with tiers and no desks, but have four "practice rooms" ...the chairs usually start out in rows on those tiered steps, but don't stay that way. Blog post: https://t.co/CKbLJa3APU#satchat

Please plan to end your weekend on a positive note by joining @Hahne_Elyse and I as we start a new chat (#gratefuledu) focused on GRATITUDE...30 minutes, beginning at 7 pm EST Sunday! We’d love to have you join us! 😊 #satchat
A6. The ultimate classroom is about learning:
- model how to
- provide resources
- give choices
- TEACH collaboration
- encourage trying & failing - w/o failing, do you really learn anything?
- Scaffold, scaffold, scaffold
- Read - provide books/materials, read aloud.
#satchat
A6 Teaching and learning in the ultimate classroom is focused on how each student learns, collaboration focused, and teaching is more focused on providing resources and guiding investigation, very little lecture, more small group instruction. #satchat
a6: The ultimate classroom is one that emits kindness and hope. It meets the individual needs of SS and allows Ss to rebound from mistakes and/or failure... #satchat
Shared experiences. Supported interests. Directed learning of big ideas while allowing for diverse, customized knowledge attainment. Shifting expectations: teachers have EXPERIENCE (not nec the knowledge) that students need in order to learn how/what they need.
#satchat
#satchat How can we create these types of spaces in middle and high school classrooms? Physical limitations of the rooms themselves make this more difficult. How about dedicated space in the library for more flexible learning ops?

A5- I’d keep my classroom simple. At the same time, it would be optimal for the well-being & socio-emotional health of students. Centers for group engagement. Peace corner for self reflection. Library is a must! Tech to learn beyond the text. #satchat
A6 In the ultimate classroom, instruction is student-focused. Learners would feel confident and comfortable to take risks and often work together to solve problems. Engineering design of problem solving instilling creativity & inventiveness. #satchat
Shifting the classroom focus to student-directed / student-created learning opportunities helps kids develop a skill that goes beyond any single content area. #satchat#lifelonglearning
A6: light on teaching heavy on co-learning and modeling learning. The resources are out there. Let’s teach kids how to learn. Process over content. Learning is exciting and learning with and from students creates a beautiful learning environment. #satchat
A6: Can I say #collaboration again??? I think the mondset of the teacher will impact the physical space, which will allow the students to see their learning space as a place to create, explore, experiment, fail.....rinse, dry, repeat! #satchat
Student relationships are the most important aspect of successful learning environments. I love my students and tell them that. So many Ss don't hear that another person cares about them and their success. #satchat
A6: The ultimate classroom's teaching and learning should:
- create a culture of respect for teachers and students
- be able to meet the individual needs of all learners
- be exciting

A6 In the ultimate classroom the teaching and learning would look genuine. You can always tell when a T is not feeling it or is not about the Ss. Same way you can tell when Ss are not truly getting it. #satchat@ScottRRocco@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
That's the end of today's #satchat
Thanks all who participated.
It's awesome to connect, collaborate & learn with you each Saturday.
The only way we make our profession better is to start imagining & talking about it.
Great ideas shared today that I hope get implemented
A6: Teaching & learning would occur organically, globally connected, innovatively, student driven, creatively, with real world purpose, & w/ opportunities for deeper exploration based on interest. We need to start #innovatingEDU so that learners innovate the future. #SatChat
A6 In the ultimate classroom, instruction is student-focused. Learners would feel confident and comfortable to take risks and often work together to solve problems. Engineering design of problem solving instilling creativity & inventiveness. #satchat
With today's "ultimate classroom" topic, I think it's important to caution the flexible seating fever movement with some caution...
https://t.co/mxliXuS7Sf#satchat
A6: Teaching and learning in the "ultimate classroom" combines chunks of instruction that engages Ss, taps into their passions, brings in authentic audiences & real world application, and realizes that there are no walls. #satchat
This is what contemporary science education is about... developing the science understanding to explain our world-- challenging students to have the science to explain this! #satchat#ngsschat
Thank You to our amazing #PLN for another awesome #Satchat
Thank you to my co-moderators @ScottRRocco and @TheBradCurrie
Join us next Saturday at 7:30 AM!
Everyone stay safe this weekend!
A6 What does teaching look like in an "ultimate classroom"?
It's all about CHOICE and OWNERSHIP
In my class, I'm a fan of extension menus to make these goals happen.
#satchat
Agreed! I turned my entire syllabus into a welcome back game. Now it’s a team challenge through 10 stations with action-oriented work products at each so we build relationships & never have to read the class rules again. Please steal it! https://t.co/Q9CzhKUDBF… #satchat
A6: it starts with a question, then working/connecting with others to make that question richer. Researching/experimenting for the answers. Presenting the findings or understanding and then reflecting on the process and what they want to explore next. #satchat
A6. The teaching is planned in partners in teams or partners, creating lessons to meet needs of all kids. Co-taught, Could be taught by kids. I'd like more lessons also taught by guests, authors, going on trips...#satchat
A6: giving Ss opps to work on a acquiring & applying content by focusing on skills. Letting failure & revision be integral to learning. Nurture courage& confidence in all Ss. Get them wanting to do more& learn more #satchat
Funny you mention this, John. Heading into this school year, I had a long talk with an involved parent, who suggested the best way to gain insight and promote positive change is to go to students first, and involve the adults later. I ruminate on this idea every day. #satchat
HELLO WORLD! #StoriesInEDU Book Study! Q1: Has your classroom #edtech always worked? If not, how did you deal with it, or didn't you? See the story behind this question in Chapter 1 https://t.co/EyWXyGFrod "The Wifi Didn't Work, So We Bought A Goat" @Heifer#satchat#leadupchat
Yes--thank you for bringing reading into the discussion! Students are empowered to learn independently when they have choices about what to read and how to gather information. This helps them make their own expert contributions to the learning environment! #satchat#studentvoice
A6. The ultimate classroom is about learning:
- model how to
- provide resources
- give choices
- TEACH collaboration
- encourage trying & failing - w/o failing, do you really learn anything?
- Scaffold, scaffold, scaffold
- Read - provide books/materials, read aloud.

Thank you @TheBradCurrie, @wkrakower, & @ScottRRocco for not kicking me out of "class." 😉 This was my first Twitter chat and I loved every moment of it. I didn't get to drink a lot of my coffee though because of the amazing conversations on #satchat. Thank you, thank you!
A6- the days of teachers in the front and students at desks are a thing of the past. Educators teaching Ss, Ss teaching educators, and Ss teaching one another creates an environment where everyone learns! #satchat
Apologies for dropping in and out - fantabulous topic this morning... I think the most important part of the ultimate classroom is a caring, supportive, nurturing teacher ... #satchat
