"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

Q1: In your instructional 'menu,' what items do you cook because they are comfortable, yet they don't 'sell?'
I'm Chantell and I teach 3rd grade in St. Louis, MO.
Glad to be. One of the few chats when my kids are sleeping. PST time zone gets little love
I wish I could have the sound in my head in your heads too, it's back spinning DJ and slide into "Let me clear my Throat
Thanks! Looking forward to some learning and laughs.
welcome, we are glad you're here to learn with us
We try to supply some of both :)
Hey Hey, - Sean from St. Augustine here, 3rd grade, ridiculous.
Yep, I like you. Cool tech toys and a rap about coding? Awesome!
Hate to be dense, but what is the difference between question 1 & 2?
welcome glad to learn with you
A1: I ask my customers (students) for what they want to eat (do) so I don't cook (plan) anything raw & inedible ()
Q1 for in case you missed it. https://t.co/0NohpzB3zL
Q1: In your instructional 'menu,' what items do you cook because they are comfortable, yet they don't 'sell?'
A1:Hitting hard from the beginning😄 I'd have to say I'm guilty of the once-a-month "silent read" assignment. Not proud of it
Not much, I did so much less than I aimed to today. Alas! How are you doin?
Q1 https://t.co/6iXbPFxo79
Q1: In your instructional 'menu,' what items do you cook because they are comfortable, yet they don't 'sell?'
Sounds about right for this particular Monday. Procrastination central for me.
A1: though restaurant week (test prep) is my guilty menu option which stifles creativity and options sometimes
A1: Having Ss do independent practice w/more than a few math problems.
'comfortable' may be different than something you 'love is the way I see it
A1: Honestly not much bc this is my 1st year teaching tech---no routines, no comfort, all brand new craziness!
A1: Sometimes kids need to eat vegetables. Cant always start w/ dessert. How do you cook vegetables so Ss want to eat?
A) I tend to fall back of the comfort of prezi, keynote, and iMovie with little benchmark connection
A1: However, I do have assigned seats, and sometimes assigned groups bc it works best for ME and is easier for ME
A1: The "bag of tricks" time wasters don't "sell" very well.Been guilty of assigning wksheets because I have a lot of them.
A1:Wait! Test prep is worse. "Read this passage, answer these questions" sort of thing.
A1 This year, that's not the problem in my kitchen. More that the customers are loud & servers don't hear orders.
student choice is always crucial, I totally agree
A1. Using tech for practice of skills, that can be done without. I want tech to represent a way for Ss to create.
the promise of dessert later? Or do we help them learn to love the veggies for veggies sake? l https://t.co/OjGKy6oKhP
A1: Sometimes kids need to eat vegetables. Cant always start w/ dessert. How do you cook vegetables so Ss want to eat?
Disconnected test prep, we have a program that reuses same articles kids ask out, I push back in
A1: My Ss know when I'm tired and getting thru. Not pleasurable for anyone! Luckily not a long term prob!
Also, lecturing. It's comfortable for ME to talk. Very rarely ordered from Ss.
Q1: Sub plans connected to the...wait for it...textbook. My total go to if one of my kids pukes in the middle of the night.
A1. worksheets don't sell but they cook quickly and take time to eat.
Exactly. Tech cant be that extra thing. Needs to be a Chef D’oeuvre of vegetable goodness.
It's so easy to fall back into this. It usually gets sent back to the kitchen.
I know a guy who doesn't even leave sub plans...crazy huh?
It also gives Ss a chance to see your human side. A product of circumstance and emotion. https://t.co/kQseADTXhy
A1: My Ss know when I'm tired and getting thru. Not pleasurable for anyone! Luckily not a long term prob!
so true, teachers are the weather and the climate of the classroom
Thanks for turning a negative into a positive. You are my new best friend;)
my feelings tonight, trying to kick a cold, glad to be on Twitter so I don't spread the funk
Getting ready to serve Q2
That would never fly in my building!
A1: Silent Reading. I shouldn't feel that way, students love it Sometimes I use it as a fillllerrr.... shame on me!
Q2: What menu items do you love, but don't 'sell?' Why?
A2: I love philosophical, deep discussion about texts we're reading. Test prep always trumps. Gag.
A2) I love to to watch students create products, I don't because I don't make time
A:2 Peer Editing. It doesn't sell, I think, cuz it's hard for student. 7th graders don't want to revise!
A2: I love very open-ended, totally creative projects. Kids hate it & want me to fill in gaps, ask a million clarifying ?s
A2: As an ELA T, "selling" my sincere passion for poetry, the classics, and non-fiction texts takes some fancy "garnish"
A2 All of the dishes I keep off the menu are due to not getting fired for skipping official things and due to test-stuff.
A2) I don't allow my Ss the time to show me mastery in their own way, too messy and time consuming an essay does enough 😭😭
A2(cont'd): Also, tough to get invested when most test texts are almost intentionally mind numbing https://t.co/GELtM8QpPs
A2 Vanessa SPED 6th grade I love tching critical thinking, but my kids are behind so admin wants canned programs
kids struggle with inquiry, especially my high level kids
What's been your favorite part of the Grammys so far?
This is a tough one. "Canned" remediation progs have validity/merit...but passion? ehhh...
A2 there's not enough time to do it the way I really want. ?
A2 I love scratch jr but I haven't figured out just how to fully integrate it so it stays on the taster menu
A2:It used to be making presentations w/GoogleSlides about content, but 0 Ss buy in.Now they pick how to present info.
I love graphic design & art. Try to sell a lite version but Ss don’t have extra time to spend on strong visual components. .
A:3 Well, I'm one of those who just learn it from the kids, or learn along with them. I'm not really "afraid" to try an
“ Peer editing can be a powerful tool, I'm sure you find some success with that
Sadness...that is the worst for any student! Stick to your gut and research! https://t.co/iQhRquaguk
A2 Vanessa SPED 6th grade I love tching critical thinking, but my kids are behind so admin wants canned programs
I hate the curric map so much. .
Design is such a soft science. Shame we don't have more time for it.
so many apps and ideas come up and then I push them away in favor of the "map"
right but trying to find a balance
Yes, but with most s!s it's like pulling teeth! https://t.co/3Ym5YlbD15
“ Peer editing can be a powerful tool, I'm sure you find some success with that
agree. pc is best scenario
Q3 about to come hot out the oven
Great idea! https://t.co/Jh3KMMnCYJ
we started doing tiered peer editing where I created the pairs to edit our blogs once a month. (6th graders) it works great!
It's good that we have role models that remind us it's cool to be an alien!
Q3: What 'specials' do you want to offer, but are afraid to try?
School time constraints make it difficult 2honor any real editing compared 2 author life.
So, so, much. You're leading your students to a realer humanity.
A3: If you've seen my rap video, you can see I'M NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING, esp embarrassing myself!
A3: I can honestly say that my admin team of allows me 2 be as creative as I want. Super supportive!
agree def. what I am working on w/ Ss. Trying to strike a balance until they get it
A2- cook off the menu all the time due to awesome PLN! Sometimes the Ss learn the tool before me. It's okay...
A3: I don't know if it's usually fear in my way as much as lack of access to ingredients...😄
Q3) I'm nervous about VR, we have class sets coming and want Ss to create with them will be messy
A3 Until recently, I owed more in S loans than my annual pay. Afraid of what? Having to get a better paying job?
We use a digital peer edit program that allows the author to keep original or accept changes. https://t.co/MmPViWPaAf
Once I shifted to only author being allowed to write on the paper-magic happened.
Community Service Class I think it would be great for kids and schools and community
Messy is where learning lives.
A3: Really tho, prob the idea of BYOD or integrating social media---things I want to do but worried about the consequences
that is challenging, can google forms-docs maximize Ss sharing, editing?
A3) we have everything we could dream of in my classroom the fear is to let go of control and perception of nonsense
Yeah, worst case scenario, you'll have to move on, do a couple of yrs in ed sales, and pay everything off.
If Ss are going to use social media, may as well teach them to use it for their personal growth
I got rid of all Ss desks & didn't stop after that. When I let go my scores shot up. all the way.
In the words of JUST DO IT!!! 😄 https://t.co/pbdtoWaCqR
A3: Really tho, prob the idea of BYOD or integrating social media---things I want to do but worried about the consequences
A3) As Media Tech- trailblazer right now. makerspace developing, great admin support, getting Ss on board ea day.
I wish I could make a poster out of this. I think I may.
totally agree but helps too lol
This sounds way cool. The messier the better!
A3 coding and student blogging but afraid it's not standards based, but know it's 21st century skill
I was there last year, but this year, we have a harder time following the threads.
Woo! Media Tech! I got boards, sets and looking into for media
A:4 The best lesson allows for as much student choice as possible
As soon as I typed it, I started looking for a background to put the quote!
Absolutely! even w/ younger Ss as a group. Connections ARE important! https://t.co/jrAn7hucWD
If Ss are going to use social media, may as well teach them to use it for their personal growth
“ I bet your students love it! Risk-taking in the classroom is how we grow
A3: I keep putting genius hour in plans but it's not sustainable with ccss or at least I haven't figured out integration.
We're super excited about the potential! It's just uncharted territory
and are doing this w/fidelity. They'd be excellent resources.
yet we hand students sharp pencils and never worry about the consequences
it will be amazing and we'll share all the way as we go
Ordered some Have some Ss making their own plus lots else like 3D printing, ozobots
🎼Hello. How are you.
I've been distracted by the I'm an EduConsultant in CA🌊
Hi everyone! Little late tonight.
totally agree we could make it fit but truth, standards are outdated already
60% are proficient so far, including 4 of my 5 IEP Ss.+ only 1 minority Ss below. Win!
Welcome back, Professor Nesi!
blogs r great platform for standards-based learning experiences in reading, writing, speaking, listening
Q4: A great meal is about is presentation, smell, timeliness and taste. What makes a lesson great?
friend of mine is piloting some ozobots. Super exciting stuff.
Thank you everyone for ideas for integration!!
Thanks for stopping by the slumber party!
It's the only way I know!
A4: a solid learning objective. Nothing else matters w/o a subject specific objective w/measurable outcomes.
A4) great lesson is benchmark focused, and inspires Ss to Communicate, Collaborate, Critically Think, and Create,
also have you seen these! simple to advanced-genius! gonna buy 1 to try-found via
A4: Engagement coupled with learning through the 4C's: connection, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity
A4: Great lessons are based on the worksheet. JK. Scaffolded and planned backwards from learning goal. Tech is invisible
A3: seminars🎯at teens/Ts Re: teens. I don't have much experience except as an ACT instructor+tutor+former teen.
Let it go! If I weren't sick of Frozen there would be one here.
A4: PLANNING! Don't teach off the cuff, think it thru & b intentional. Kids can tell when you don't know where you're going
A) have to start with the "Why" there has to be a reason for the lesson that ties back to Why Ss need to know
I agree. Standards based instruction and a focus on the learning is the key
Yup. Students can see right through busy work.
I'll have to check it out! Thanks for the rec.!
some argue against "limiting" learners to one or two of your chosen objectives. New trend having Ss find own path?
A4: Agreed. A great lesson is measured by ability to its achieve learning goals. https://t.co/hCIW9mxB2Q
A4: a solid learning objective. Nothing else matters w/o a subject specific objective w/measurable outcomes.
advocates this all the time. Give Ss the standard, THEY choose how 2 show mastery
A4 Student choice, room to go down rabbit holes, the ability to play with ideas, sharing what we've learned.
The new way of thinking is allowing Ss to innovate instead of just create. Innovation is following their own plan
Marked to look at later. Thanks for sharing!
brilliant concept, great lessons improve as they are used and kinks worked out
A4🍔StudentEngagement
🍟Objectives match Standards
🍎T is confident w/LP
🍪Ss have Fun.
🍶/☕️ Ss share w/Ps + Ts share w/Ts+PLN
This chat is making me hungry...
you can have multiple, but you need at least 1. Input fr Ss is valuable in shaping a clear obj.
A4: All the pieces of great lesson work toward learning goals. Lecture, paper, tech, creating- all can play strategic roll
I honestly think it is possible to think🍎it🍎through +🔮so➖consequences are minimized.
making tech invisible is crucial but hard for some schools & hard to fully attain until the schl makes changes
A4: + .The results are amazing.I took my Ss to present about podcasting last wk @ a regional conference bc of it.
Ss choice goes a long way to a connected classroom. Connect Ss to their learning goal instead of your curriculum map
Definitely a process, but planning around what you have available can quell some tech woes.
A4 Anticipation, we want to eat at the best restaurant in town Be the food critic and advertise.
A5 We need to avoid adding new things that don't have an iota of student creation/curation. Ss need choices in creating.
why should tech be invisible?
Invisible in the sense that it should not be obtuse and get in the way of learning goal. Integrated seamlessly
open discussion at our school now, how to grade diffed work, lower level shouldn't mean lower grade
I agree why can't we get districts to see this makes so much sense and why isn't curr built this way
In this age, tech should be the salt, not the entree.
Fit the map into Ss directed goals, not the other way around. Get crafty!
Yep! This is my new focus area as I'm planning. Well said. https://t.co/Jo5SbXigO1
A5 We need to avoid adding new things that don't have an iota of student creation/curation. Ss need choices in creating.
Innovate around the confines of what we're mandated to do.
yes, means different ways to access info and show knowledge
All day every day over here!
It should be the spatula, I think.
A5: Student choice gives them buy in. Lets them choose something they'll be successful at or have a passion for.
I would not exactly reduce tech to a mere seasoning.
Don't get me started on crappy, unfair grading practices. OMG! zeros, unfair random weighting!
A5: Don't let them leave the table until they've cleaned their plate? It's how my parents got me to eat vegetables...:)
sometimes tech needs to be the learning goal. Regardless of the the content area.
Thanks for all the great ideas! late for me...new day tomorrow!
My understanding is Ss are used to being consumers ➡️. Thus, Ts want Ss to create/innovate.
Agreed. Tech proficiency can't be an assumed skill. Kids need PD, too.
Appliances as a comparison is much better than salt.
tech is the tool, the mixing spoon or the bowl, it has to be used as needed. not when you need a knife and fork.
Yes! Time & place for each role, each instructional tool. Effectively putting the pieces together is an art
I love all these food metaphors.
Standards Based grading made a world's difference for my district.
tech literacy should be required PD ea yr for everyone - No matter the industry.
yes and if they are creating someone else's plan or something already discovered it's still not innovation
Problem is--it's not a question on the state test.
Q6: Buffet lines are messy and inefficient. How can we give our 'customers' control to master content in their own way.
A5:Give them choice. is an easy way to start off.
yeah no matter what field you work in being current in tech should be required.
A6: Provide tech guidance, learning goal/standard, and exemplars--then get out of the Ss' way.
A6 Be flexible. Allow Ss to eat/prep/share/curate/create in their own fashion as much as you can. Then maybe a little more.
Great point. Schools, teachers need plans for both tech curriculum & using tech to teach curriculum https://t.co/Iu79ggDMU9
sometimes tech needs to be the learning goal. Regardless of the the content area.
A6: Be flexible! With deadlines, with how and what they create. Let them make what works for them and stand back & watch
A6: Give ppl control. Empower/Entrust Ts and give Ss access. Can't learn to swim at the pool parking lot.
