I Work at Rialto Unified School District and I teach 1-2 SDC Mild/Moderate
A1: I think it reaffirms self-confidence for Ts but also models life-long learning for Ss.
what do you mean a column for where you are in the chat? Is that something different than notifications?
A1 My Dist really pays (15%) if you get certification. Google certs lvls offered as salary pt classes.
a1: Certifications show others what you know. Also affirms for yourself your skill level.
Hey there Todd, elem principal in Corona del Mar...looking forward to a great chat!
Rialto is is representing large tonight!
Monika CA foothills k-12 charter school
Hi Kim! Thanks for joining us!
A1: Learning and be relevant.
A1: certifications communicate specific levels of competency. Also if you know all that stuff you can teach like, better.
a1: The certifications also let you into higher levels of Google opportunities like the innovator program.
A1 Helps get Ts used to self-directed learning
Yay. Cruising until the end of the school year. Have your Ss graduated yet?
I think it helps further ur career in educ
A1: continued learning and acquisition of skills
A1: show your skills, desire to keep learning
A1 Google certs are beneficial because kids are fascinated with technology. We can reinvent learning and make it fun.
Hey Kathy checking in from Upland. I teach 9th grade students. Tomorrow is our last Monday. I am going to miss this group
A1:affirms knowledge and shows peers & Ss that you're a lifelong learner who wants to share!
A1 I think the benefits are that it gives you another resource that can help you be a better Educator.
A1. Certifications can help build your PLN, your own knowledge, and help keep you excited about learning and teaching.
Aspiring High School Math teacher. Excited to be here.
In Tweetdeck, you can create different custom streams-one can be just for while another can be your notification stream
love this aspect of all the google certs
Hi. I'm Ellen. Teacher, DThinker among other things. Sorta lurking tonight. :)
A1 for my grad students Google certifications are a powerful resume builder too.
A 1. Some of the benefits of becoming Google certified include staying up to date on current technology.
A1: For me, it shows a willingness to walk the walk...I do it with my teachers so we can learn and grow together!
A1: Corporate certs can show leadership and innovation with corporate tools. Important for corps. to support Edu initiatives.
A1: helps you b a better T to your Ss. Lrng & innovation are what's needed. & become better through lrng w other like minded ppl
Do you think google certification is good for a TK teacher?
Caleb here from Hanford...it's near Fresno.
thank u. I got that. Sounded like there was something else. :)
thats awesome! I wish my admin would do that
Yes! All admin should be doing the certs w/ their Ts! https://t.co/uYISa0vwWG
A1: For me, it shows a willingness to walk the walk...I do it with my teachers so we can learn and grow together!
Absolutely! Even 4 and 5 year olds can benefit from things like Google Classroom!
I am currently working on my LVL 1, My district is paying for 50+ teachers to complete this LVL (including )
Sure! Everyone can get them and it shows you know your Google stuff. TK is the start of all education!
A1- Certs demonstrate a level of mastery- I have learned a lot, Not everyone has a certificate- it sets you apart from a crowd
Teacher in training. Rancho Cucamonga looking forward to the chat.
Popping in a few minutes late, but ready to lurk and learn ;)
Throw down a challenge! Ask him or her to join you...sometimes we need to just be asked! https://t.co/EWK2jcBbAI
thats awesome! I wish my admin would do that
Hi Jen from Upland..9/10 ELA...let's hear it for Summer's rapid approach! This 1st year teacher is ready for a break!
Yes, because the tools will support your collaboration with colleagues & some even work w TK students.
Love the idea of admin doing this with their Ts!
I think so it is not always for the Ss- lots of T stuff. Plus- you may not teach TK forever.
yes! so much cool stuff littles can do, check out my friend she's all about using Google in Primary
we'll be hosting a GAFE bootcamp soon too! Excited for more Ts to get certified!
A1: I got my Level 1 to help w/ the transition of going 1:1 w/ my 5th graders. Shared exp. w/ my S's about always learning.
A1 I wonder why HSs use Google Classroom. All CA Comm Colls use for online learning. Shouldn't we?
Future English teacher! Yay, for first edchat!
thanks I will check her out!
Great to have you here - Glad we are your first edchat!
-----------------> Q2 is up next. Watch for
. There's room for both. Classroom is not a full LMS and isn't a replacement for Canvas
My district just adopted . Looking forward to getting to use it w students.
should be your lifeline in a sea of chaos which is our profession! Welcome
is now trending in USA, ranking 36
Q2 - What certifications do you have (or plan on getting)? Why did you get them?
Is that Moodle? Our local CC's use Moodle...
Joining a little late. Laurie from San Marcos. 3rd grade
I use for online teaching. Now Dist moving to Too many learning curves
Glad you made it tonight!
Is that actually a justifiable reason? I don't think so.
a2: I am trying to Google level 1 and 2. Ultimate goal would be innovator.
A2- I have Google 1 level cert. & Microsoft Innovative Innovator cert as well as Discover Ed Network Star Most useful is GooCert 1
A2 don't have any. Don't know how to attain them
I like I have taught 4 MOOCs on it. Super intuitive and easy to set up.
A 2. I do not have any Google certs. I am finishing up my credential and Masters. Once that is done I will look into certs.
by that logic all the community colleges should be using (shudder) blackboard
A2: have Google cert level 1 &2. Plan on google trainer and hope for innovator one day! All to support Ts & peeps in my PLN
A2: Google Cert Educator levels 1 & 2. Looking into Google Cert Trainer. Got certs to learn, also increase credibility w/teachers.
A1 canvas is by far a more feature rich LMS but every teacher can "just use" GC
A2: Apple Distinguished Educator. The PLN is amazing. Given me many opportunities. Failed the Google test. 🤔
A:2 I'm Google Level 1. Will be getting Level 2 over summer. Hoping for innovator in future.
I currently do not have any certification, but hearing more about it I would like to do the Google Certification.
We have Moodle and Google classroom. Classroom is great for GAFE districts.
A2 Have Educator Levels 1 & 2 and Innovator . Just applied for trainer. Wanted to learn, share, and grow
Working on LVL 1, also plan to do LVL 2....Would love to accomplish Innovator
Just need to learn more how to go about getting it?
A2 b- Need to study for Google Cert level 2 and Ultimate Goal Google Trainer
You are about to have them all!
Yeah, that's a problem. Orgs need to have some stability.
A1:I like to learn new things and share. I'm also a little competitive and like to know I can pass the cert.
Great news - is about to send a link to help you!
A2 I am currently not Google certified but I am very interested and open to it.
I have completed Google Level 1 and Level 2. So much more to learn and do!
I am interested in the certifications but I do not understand how to get them
A2: Level 1 & 2, honestly because I needed to do something for me and Husband wasn't going for a 2nd MA in STEM teaching
A2: Leading Edge Certification was really good...allowed me to learn about and implement a plan for using tech at my site
A2 Am currently working on Level 1. I'd be the first in our county, and I don't believe there are any in the neighboring counties.
A2 Fortunate to be Google Certified Teacher b4 they changed it to Innovator. I applied b/c of the great things I heard from peers.
Awesome - are you planning on google certs too?
hope so! They've given me the chance to grow professionally and make cxn that are helping the Ts and Ss I work w/
thank you, I would appreciate it, I think it is something cool to have
A2 I have T1 admin. Will start T2 in fall. Also working on Google Educator 2.
I have Level 1...working on Level 2 this summer...would like to eventually get to Google Cert Innovator
I did LEC for online/blended a few years ago. It was awesome. Did you do LEC for admin?
. yes, LEC classes have been great for me as well!
Keep trying! I failed 1st time too. Play w/ each of the tools get better. Watch your time. https://t.co/gYou9sniPu
A2: Apple Distinguished Educator. The PLN is amazing. Given me many opportunities. Failed the Google test. 🤔
I think Ts should choose from a few platforms, the proliferation of LMSs is scary.
A2 got them because I know I need them to fight for what kids need.
Encourage any folks interested in online learning environments to check out Edorble, 3D world for classes or meetings!
A2. Level 1 cert will be my first goal. Our district rewards us for learning.
A2 I'm a Google Innovator. I took the level 1 test out of curiosity. I'll try level 2 this summer when I have more time.
A2: Google Level 1 and 2, Gooru Cert, Symbaloo, and Scratch Cert. I passed the Google trainer exams, just have to apply for that.
How is your district rewarding you?
I did...great way to network & connect w other admin...ton of useful tools...& had to create a Google site as well!
there is a certification for Symbaloo?
I need you to drag me along with you in that!
-----------------> Q3 is set. Watch for
. Big reason I try to teach Ts to "own" their content; then they can use *any* LMS
I may look at that when I finish EdTech masters next year. Thanks!
It could be a competition like your fitbit steps LOL
thanks Ryan! Our kids need the best, so I need to be my best!
A2 I'm not Google certified. I'm working toward my teachers credential and Masters.
Q3 - Google Level 1 is tool-based (S/A on SAMR). What do you do to help Ts and Ss use the best tool for online work?
Or just help each other put the package together :)
hi all Level 1 & Trainer essentials
You have a HUGE head start though!
I did it in 2011. It's changed since then. Now you have to have level 1&2 exams done before you apply.
A3 I let Ss select their tools. Choice helps them exceed my expects. A little ambiguity in proj desc helps too
Congrats! It is not easy! Did you like the process for the CUE cert?
A2: Lead with learning, never with tech. Teachers start w/learning target, then we brainstorm how to innovate using tech as tool.
A3 I tell them the answer is always a spreadsheet. #42
A3. I try to model the different GAFE & other tools in my own teaching & provide opportunities for students to pracice with them.
A3- I assign digital content such as Google slides (due to collab potential) & googledocs. We use chromebooks in class.
a3: I have a conversation. First we have to decide what the task is. Then recommend a tool.
But you have ALL the know how that it will require
Alright then - we'll need to get it done :)
Yes, we had part of it in a district PD and the other part was an online webinar.
A3 IN Tk I teach them how to log on and x out . They are so bright they log into their Sokicom and starfall sites and take off.
Do you allow students choice in using tools during assignments?
That is perfect! Modeling is key to learning
A3 I have been pleased using for direct instruction. Like the Pro feature to monitor student progress
A3: What about setting the objective and asking Ss to evaluate and select best tool?
A3 Modeling and guided practice is vital. Make sure students have enough time to get comfortable with various tools
A3: I like to give my Ss choices, sometimes what I think is the "best" tool isn't the best for everyone
A2: Read PLC minutes from teachers, then ask if I can "try new tech tool" in their class that relates. Often teachers follow suit.
I'm a teaching assistant and part of my position is supplemental notes ~ I make them interactive & share via email
I love this idea- as long as we have options. I usually do give choice in tools for big projects https://t.co/u1L0G2GLfR
A3: What about setting the objective and asking Ss to evaluate and select best tool?
A3 I would talk to them and see what the assignment is and they discuss what would work best.
Student-led learning. Excellent!
A3. Have a conversation and decide together what will be best for them
A2: I have yet to be certified. Getting Masters in Digital Teaching. It would be a great asset.
A3: Got a great idea from & ..set up a quiet room for Ts to be able to do their own blended learning!
That is awesome - you can get your certs when you are finished with your Masters!
A3 I've been leading discussions about evaluating tech. SAMR is one tool, but DOK, 4Cs, other measures are important, too
A3: Show Ss that tools within apps are interchangeable-teach digital skills and appropriate evaluation of tools
considering it. A bit burned on the "testing for innovation"
A3: with my younger Ss, we model uses for tools, then let them choose and find new ways to use and share with each other.
I totally get that! Since google changed the process- it is more difficult than it was to get the levels. https://t.co/dqBSADsejo
considering it. A bit burned on the "testing for innovation"
A3 build stronger collaboration & communication w/Teacher partner via Google Forms & etc... I use Forms 4Progress monitoring
Q4-Google Level 2 is lesson-design & pedagogy What are some ways you’ve gone to the M/R part of the SAMR scale in your lessons?
A3: W/ Ts, other techie Ts and I share what we've come up with and challenge them to try. Need more time to share though
A4: Keep in mind authentic audiences and M/R follow naturally.
A3 I'm constantly modeling different ways tech can be use ~ just collaborated on making video tutorials w/colleague
A4: I have modified several assignments, created templates for students to complete on a google slide.
A3- Curriculum mastery first, then tech tools to support. I'm trying to get really good with a handful of tools 1st.
A3: Ss creating digital content to explain math thinking. Next step - share with another class somewhere else for feedback.
A4: trying to get Ts to break down the walls to their classroom and connect outside of their space
A3 I talk with the students about using tech, always curious about what they like to do with digital tools
does it cost to get cert?
As educators we know there are other ways to test for mastery. 😎
A4: Still working on them screencasting their "work-in-progress"..but we are getting three
A4: Ss creating digital content to explain math thinking. Next step - share with another class somewhere else for feedback.
A4 Global audience (blogs, Twitter, etc)- authentic, relevant, motivating
A2: I am getting my master's in Digital Teaching! Edtech is the future and I want to be prepared for my own class
There is a small fee for the exams $10 for Level 1 and $25 for Level 2 - ask your admin to pay for them!
We did it last summer. Contact Jason Charles for info :)
A4: finding more authentic audiences, having Ss show their work in a broader arena- screencasting, videos, digital portfolios
a4: For the counter-reformation the students used Thinglink to annotate an El Greco painting.
wow I wonder if they will
I'm a future elementary teacher, and this is my first edchat!
A4: Website design is my favorite - Ss design websites to teach - replaces many traditional writing exercises.
A4: I like the MR part of SAMR to be student-driven, student-centered.
A4 I have used technology in my class, such as google slide and also have modified assignments for my students
A4 Use Google Slides to take notes & communicate w/teacher partners ~ set up slides for review manipulative
A5 i have used chatter pix to have the Ss share info about animals. For EL Ss it was easier than presenting in front of the class
That would be cool if my administrator will pay for it.
A4: Blogs are amazing as authentic audiences, digital citizenship, and life-long reflecting habits.
A4 Understand Ss MI strengths, create a lesson that they will be successful in.
I liked that people are giving Ss more choice in projects - like podcasts, screencast, making movies, etc
I currently use technology in the SDC setting to motivate students to participate in assignments.
create interactive study tools for the students ~self paced with no score
A1: Getting certifications like Google cert. Can keep us up to date on new trends! The goal is to always keep learning!
A4: Provide students choice to demonstrate their understanding/make difference & they often naturally fall in M/R of SAMR
This summer I want to spend time developing Combocasts to explain assignments to my students.
As great as the certs are, a masters done right is a serious accomplishment and something to be very proud of.
Q5 - Google Trainer is designed for TOSAs, Teacher Leaders, Inst Coaches, etc. How are Trainers utilized in your district?
What are combocasts? I'm so curious!
A4: We connect so much more globally. Animated story telling. Real world connections in subject areas. Immersive maps using 360
A4 I have my ELD student type his journal on slides and add visuals since he is SPED
A4: I love having Ss connect globally via Edmodo. Share learnings or debate with Ss from around the world.
A5 people seek me out all the time! It's great! Working with colleague to setup a blog for next year~experimenting now
A5: our tech coach is the only cert trainer, she co-teaches, leads PD, helps in unit planning, etc.
Q5 in my district Google Trainer is not a thing..yet. Working on it!
It would be ideal to have a Trainer at each site - does your district have a trainer at each school?
A5 Since I am new to teaching I don't think my district has trainers
does anyone know why Google eliminated the search feature by reading level? They should bring it back.
A5: No Google trainers in our district yet! Hope to be the 1st by years end!
A6 my mentors are some of the most inspiring & motivating peeps I know when it comes to engaging with
Me too Not sure if she meant screencasts or chromecasts?
What is the process of getting certified? Is there a website were I can gather further info? TY
A5 we don't have any in our district or neighboring districts so it will be new territory for me.
A5: This is our 1st yr w/ multiple TOSAS (elem, tech, content in 2ndary) Tryin 2 reach as many Ts as possible on tech integration
A5 As a new teacher I need to do a better job actually find out what type of trainers our district offers.
A5 in my district Google Trainer is not a thing..yet. Working on it!
A5 I am not too sure how trainers are used in my district... :0 I will have to find out.
Also coding projects - writing stories and showing dialogue, setting, etc. in or math, science, etc.
A5. I have been working closely with my TOSA this year. She has been helping me with a challenging student.
I'm trying to setup a Google Hangout with a special guest for the students to interact with
First chat and learning so much. I'll study with you.
Trainers may be TOSAs in your district. A TOSA is a teacher on special assignment
A3: Modeling is key! And giving the students enough opportunity to practice with the tool!
A5: Most important job of TOSA: facilitate collaboration, develop leaders from w/in to maximize impact, create sustainability.
A6 I have an amazing district mentor. She is extremely knowledgeably and is always willing to help.
a5: We use the TOSA model and then we have tchrs in our district provide PD for each other at district wide training days.
we have ed tech coaches but I never see them
Our TOSA has great ideas but I think our district could make bigger strides to be more technology savvy.
A friend and I do informal get togethers over the summer and help others. Last summer we did forms, classroom, & sites
Q6-Google Innovator added a full year mentor for participants. What are some positives you’ve gained from mentors in your career?
A5- We don't have a district tech trainer, we bring in county-level trainers. Thinking I will step-up in future as a trainer.
thanks I have a lot of things I want to accomplish w/ the world of Google!
A6: pushing me to move forward, "forced" me to apply to present at CUE, thankful that she did
A6. My district mentor has been extremely helpful with IEP writing and preparing for IEP meetings. I am lucky to have her.
Where are your TOSAs? How can you get them to your site/classroom?
. My summer is going to be an exciting one! I'm facilitating two formal workshops ~Forms & Slides
A6: My mentors are peers who push me to grow beyond what I thought was possible. Most are a part of
A6: love having someone to bounce ideas off of and to collaborate on my ideas
My mentor has been amazing, helping me with any questions or support I need.
After you teach a few years you can be the tech TOSA in your district!
My faves! So much to do with those! I love all the great tips you share!
My faves! So much to do with those! I love all the great tips you share!
. first training session will be no longer than 5 minutes: get on Twitter, it is a professional game-changer.
Was your mentor key to getting you to present at your first conference? Mine was :)
So great to have people pushing you to do more right? Even when it is uncomfortable!
My goal is to motivate & share innovative ways to use Slides & forms more than presentation or surveys
experts...Can you create to use as an hyperlink assignment.
yes! can be super annoying when she wants to be :) https://t.co/BwsIOyAQGH
Was your mentor key to getting you to present at your first conference? Mine was :)
A6: mentors have helped me navigate very rough waters and avoid pitfalls. Sometimes they've taught me what NOT to do.
A6: Mentors do push into the uncomfortable zone! It's karma- you'll do it to someone else!
Yes! My kids made Choose your own adventure stories - prob was a tip from you? We use slides for EVERYTHING ;)
Luckily is my mentor - though she just found out last week :)
Also doing a small consult with a group of teachers over the summer to help support the content area with tech
A5: I'm not sure what is offered/supported. I'll look into a trainer course. I'll see if I can join the process.
Q7 - What certification does Google not offer that it should?
yes! she makes me realize what I do is worth sharing, and she introduced me to Twitter which has had a MAJOR impact
I agree! I believe being pushed out of ur comfort zone by your mentor is super beneficial in the learning process.
Too funny Ryan!! How goes the chat?
A6- experience, someone to challenge and push you, support, reflection. Mentors are an essential part of the path to mastery.
. Yes! it is important to have the students be the creator and curators for the digital projects
A7 since I am rather new to Google I am not sure
A7: District Certification!!!!
Just singing your mentor praises :)
A7: Student Certification!
My mentor is the person who pushed me to choose the master's in digital teaching, and still shares new tools and resources with me
A7: Principal/Building Administrator Certification!
My kids made Forms quizzes for multiplication practice for the class. They owned it! :)
A7: What is district and student certification? These are all new terms for me.
Q7 asked what certs weren't offered that should be!
a6: My mentors are always one or two steps ahead. They provide inspiration. Mentors take you to the next level.
Thank you to everyone who joined the chat tonight. You are what makes great!
a6: Mentor comes from a character in the Odyssey. He helps Telemachus move from one stage of life to the next. He energizes.
A7 I hate to say this but I do not know what Google Certs there are. Where can I find out?
A7. I do not belive I know enough about the Google certs to answer that!
A5- Help me push past my limits. Play if I get crazy ideas
Name the time and place! We can learn together. Let's get certified together. :-)
. Thank you Laurie! We live in a global world ~it is important to support one another
I loved when my AP came in with a chromebook issue. I couldn't solve, but 3 of my kids knew the answer.
Be sure to follow some new educators from the chat tonight to help grow your PLN
Thank you! Does student certification refer to our students?
Thank you all for coming tonight! Now you can go and study for those Google certification tests :)
Learned so much from my first
Google Search is a wonderful place!
Thank you so much to for co-moding tonight. If you have Google Cert questions, she is your person!
