Morning #BookCampPD ! Kimberly, K-5 Reading specialist from north TX. Loved seeing the light bulb come on for a student this week when we were learning about inferring.
Good morning #bookcamppd! I'm Sara from Missoula, MT. I treasured my time in Seattle this week presnting, learning, and meeting so many new educators at NCCE in Seattle!
Hey #BookCampPD Ben Reno Nv assistant principal @maxwellbulldogs & my treasured moment was watching my friend @dwalker_w work with 6th graders to become amazing authors
Good Morning! Sarah, 3rd grade LA teacher from OH. A highlight of my week was beginning a new mission statement as our schools come together into one large k-12 building #BookCampPD
Hi #BookCampPD! Lisa, a literacy specialist from Massachusetts. Treasured moment: whole school got together for a read aloud followed by time for independent reading.
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS. Will likely be more out than in this morning as we have family visiting. #nt2t#BookCampPD

A1. Sometimes I began by having everyone check for an envelope under their chair and had special surprises inside that they shared aloud with everyone related to the discussion. #BookCampPD
A1 open investigation of materials through text graffiti activities has made a huge difference this year. Questions are improving and kids are showing genuine excitement to get the books out and learn more #BookCampPD
A1 I usually begin be relating the content to something I encountered in real life. It gives them a chance to see that I'm real and make mistakes. #bookcamppd
A1: Humour and keeping it real. I tell my own stories often to hook kids into a lesson. From Bike accidents to escaping a couple dictators I had for babysitters with the help of my brother haha. Story writing is easy when we see our own stories as the hook. #BookCampPD
A1. Sometimes I would have three students with clipboards, and previously reviewed expectations, observing their classmates during discussions and then review at the end which students received the highest # of expectation points. #BookCampPD
A1: omg- we did a #breakoutedu yesterday which is quite hooky on its own. But my Ss begged me to bring in my Nintendo switch for them. I let them set it up only to realize the controllers were locked in the breakout box 😂 #bookcamppd
A1. story telling, humor, and/or empathy. Be someone that others can relate to. Whether it be your students or your coworkers, people will not learn from someone who over complicates the process. #bookcamppd
A1 our teachers begin #PBL units with entry event-i'm biased cuz my favorites are ones I get to participate in-like 1st graders building Mr. Dickson skateboard safety gear based on things they learned about how animals protect themselves #BookCampPD
A1 moving things around the room, placing random items on desks for students to create with, changing text activities to encourage curiosity and student choices #bookcamppd
A1: I try to hook students in with a story. It's my favorite way to learn and it gets their schema's activitated to their previous experiences. #bookcamppd
A1. I know I need to have some sort of relationship built before I can engage ANY audience (adults or Ss). I share personal stories and get to know my audience #BookCampPD
A1 using white boards with sts standing ... I can give feedback in-the-moment & gets them standing ... also like music (need to be more dedicated & diligent in playing it) #BookCampPD
A1 Ss received a puzzle piece when they walked through my classroom door this week. Predictions, discussion on what the puzzle might be began a lesson on inferring. #bookcamppd
A1: I also have a video hook for my reproduction unit that I pitch as being really racy until they realize it’s just bacterial conjugation. It’s hysterical #bookcamppd
A1 b ... I taught my students sketchnotes then we used them to read an essay ... they loved it (paid attention and thought - then Sharee under doc cam) #bookcamppd
In our animal/non-fiction unit, we play an amazing video on the Venus fly trap. It's to get them thinking about "wow" parts, and "I wonder" questions so they can use that kind of thinking w/the rest of their non-fiction reading. #bookcamppdhttps://t.co/Q49DXYLXXK
A1 b ... I taught my students sketchnotes then we used them to read an essay ... they loved it (paid attention and thought - then Sharee under doc cam) #bookcamppd
A1 I try to know as much as my audience as possible so I know what will engage them. Also, giving the audience choice and voice empowers them from the start. #bookcamppd
A2. I would run down the hall and talk with another teacher who was an expert in that area - Debbie Petzel was always my "go to" for anything involving animals/plants/ecology/science! #BookCampPD
A2: Try to make connections to things that are enjoyable, measure my students interests. If they are not into it either we pull anchor and sail away lol #BookCampPD
A2 put everything I have into it, add a game, music, use stations and then have diff activ so I can work with each group and S, more interaction and relationship building #bookcamppd
A2 find the hook for you & kids and make it real! I was a struggling Math student but knew when I had to apply Math working construction it made more sense-do the same for kids #relevant#BookCampPD
A2: Just because it isn’t your favorite, doesn’t mean you cannot be passionate about the topic. Find a way to make the topic fun and never let the students know you don’t enjoy that unit! #bookcamppd
A2. Allow Ss to take the wheel! Give them choice in developing their own ?s about the topic and how we will answer the ?s. Voice and choice are key for engagement. #bookcamppd
A2. There are SO many resources on the Internet and experts who are more than willing to assist when asked, I could always reach out to them as well. #BookCampPD

Same!! Her units are so great. She and her team really understand the ins and outs of literacy. I have grown as a literacy T from her amazing work. #Bookcamppd

A2 The unit I am doing now is not my favorite, so I focus on trying new things to make it more fun for me. This year I experimented with sketchnotes with my kiddos. They loved it #bookcamppd
A2. Sit down with a group of students a couple of weeks in advance and ask them what prior knowledge they have about the topic and JUST LISTEN .... #BookCampPD
A2: It's imperative to get pupped up about a topic we're teaching...students know when when were not excited so why should they?!?
Getting tips from colleagues it's a great tip #bookcampPD
A2: Sometimes those become my favorite lessons because I have to be really creative on how to make myself and the students excited. Work around the boring, find a way in. #bookcamppd
A2: Teaching Kindergarten anytime I can incorporate hands-on learning through manipulatives or interactive learning centers is a safe bet... and thematic crafts ;) #BookCampPD
A1: My SpEd students struggled to be on time and calm at the start of class. I secretly timed how long it took them to settle in - then I wrote that time on the board without saying a word. They quickly learned the game & it became a daily challenge to beat the time. #BookCampPD
A2. I would run down the hall and talk with another teacher who was an expert in that area - Debbie Petzel was always my "go to" for anything involving animals/plants/ecology/science! #BookCampPD

A2 I’m not good at tchg poetry, but I’m working with a colleague — Poetry SuperCenter (sts shop for poems - we give them a “shopping” list - posted around the room) ... had some online shoppers, too 🤩 #BookCampPD

A2: when I started teaching Sci Fi 2 years ago I really didn't have a passion for it, I read every YA book I could, used a colleague as a resource and now I love it! #bookcamppd
✨A2: MAKE IT A GAME! When the topic isn’t your favorite you can add gamification elements to make the content more engaging! Adding hooks, choice, weaving personal passions, and making it relevant to what’s happening in the world are great options too! #bookcamppd#XPLAP#TLAP✨
Lol! Me too! But you cannot talk to the students that way. If they know you have a closed mindset, they’ll get one too. Closed mindsets are just as contagious as any other trait. #bookcamppd
A3. If anyone has the opportunity to attend a conference session offered by @conniehamilton or @mssackstein please jump at the opportunity! These ladies fully understand ENGAGEMENT! #BookCampPD
Sounds like a great idea! When I taught in a classroom poetry was my favorite writing unit. I loved reading the first graders poetry and learning about how they see the world. #bookcamppd
A1: Give the kids the topic. Have them in teams develop as many questions about that topic as possible in 5 minutes. Use the student generated ?’s to segway into the lesson. It taps into student interests with some fun competition. #BookCampPD
A1 I'm enjoying reading all of your creative ways to engage. Too often I see videos used. While sometimes they are effective, I dislike seeing them used for every lesson. #BookcampPD
A3: @AmyLearn is our Innovation Coach at #woodsonK does everything from GT instruction to working students on STEM challenges druing playtime and using @Seesaw with staff during PD #BookCampPD
A2: storytelling and emotion. If I encapsulate my boredom or disinterest for a topic in ridiculous stories about me learning the topic in school, the kids eat it up. My rants against plants are pretty epic (I hate all things plant bio). #bookcamppd
A3 Our Kinder Ts rock on creating engaging lessons! Not afraid to be over theatrical, dress up, get hands-on...Wish I could tag, but they aren't on Twitter! #bookcamppd
A1: In kindergarten I use lots of small hooks that get Ss engaged and excited. This week I used the suit of hearts from a deck of cards for number identification, number order and greater than/less than. Even little hooks make a big difference. #BookCampPD
A3 If you teach elementary math @gfletchy is a great follow. He creates engaging lessons & also has videos to build teacher content understanding #bookcamppd
When was the last time you sat on a porch swing and shared ideas with a friend? We hope you will join #BookCampPD next Saturday and tell about the strategies/resources you have used related to "Teach Like a Pirate" - See you then!
A3: @yelena585 my partner in crime who constantly finds new things to spice up teaching. Her enthusiasm contagious 😷 @Tlvb13 who is constantly revising lessons to polish them. Just brainstormed an awesome way to integrate MyMaps into an ASL lessons #bookcamppd
A2: When a topic isn't my favorite, I will talk to my grade level partners and gather good ideas/strategies from them. I also follow many kindergarten blogs and I find other teachers inspiration invaluable in planning. Even if I don't like it, Kids Deserve the best! #BookCampPD
A2 I think it's ok to let students know that they may not always be the biggest fans of certain topics, but teach them there's always something new to learn. You can model how you get through those topics you're not a fan of. #BookcampPD
