Hi everyone! I'm Sylvia ... Academic Coach / ENG Tchr at a Title 1 HS in Tampa, FL ... and my new favorite movie is the story of and behind The Grestest Showman! #HCPSTeach
It is truly amazing ... every teacher needs to see how Barnum celebrated humanity (and @RealHughJackman is an amazing actor) ... we have listened to the soundtrack exclusively for two weeks ... #HCPSTeach
A1: oh boy. Not enough characters. I envision a future where traditional school no longer exists and personalized learning reigns. Where Ss go to the @floridaaquarium to earn a biology badge and public libraries for research. And so much more #hcpsteach
That we can take back the art of teaching and create classrooms that encourage students to become problem solvers, creators, dreamers...really whatever they want to be. #HCPSTeach
What a great idea ... involving corporations and businesses in students’ real-world learning! Do you see more apprenticeships and technical certifications as opposed to degrees? Or both? #HCPSTeach
Don’t we already have this though? @planthighschool has American studies that merges AP Lang and APUSH. Middle school has STEM lessons that can be used in all subjects. #hcpsteach
Thanks to @MsTuminellaTBK8 and our amazing teachers, we have started this and continue to move in this direction with our STEM Units of Study #HCPSTeach
Oh yes ... I’m reminded daily of Math Principle #1 Make sense of a problem and persevere in solving it! ... How did we get away from those learning skills? #HCPSTeach
I don’t see why we need to choose. If we’re teaching students how to learn and the 4 C’s we can have it all. It all already exists. We just promote some more than others. #hcpsteach
I know Brandon HS used to have that exactly ... but even more creative .. Communicating Effectively in Mathematics (writing & math) .. science / history ... CTE meets English ... Let’s bridge subjects instead of silo them. #HCPSTeach
Find your tribe! Find ways to block out the noise. But most importantly give yourself a BREAK. We can’t help students long term if we burn out in the first act. #HCPSTeach
The power is in the hands of the teacher (as it should be). Create those lessons that you could sell tickets to, JOY is sure to follow #TLAP#HCPSTeach#KidsDeserveIt
A2 I get to work with Ss who will be future leaders, engineers, scientists, etc.... interacting with them is my favorite part and my joy in teaching. #hcpsteach
A2 My friend has adopted the unicorn as a positive inspiration -- I find joy in bringing her gifts with unicorns on them - depends on your love language, I suppose!

Stacy, do you think ES teachers have more freedom in planning JOY-ful lesson plans that those of us in Secondary? Or is it merely planning better? :) #HCPSTeach
I feel you. Most of my tribe isn’t even in the same county. Lol. But we need to find people who keep us positive and give us energy to keep going. Stay away from the energy drainers. #hcpsteach
I love Edcamp because it reminds me of all the people dedicated to putting students first. No politics. No contracts. No us against them. Just people who love kids. #hcpsteach
I think the difference is the amount of content teachers feel they need to teach instead of focusing on the standards of teaching (my learning gain from my ES friends!) #HCPSTeach
A3 I'm still a work in progress - but I've learned to study them - by curious about their cultures - then discover and admit my own hidden biases. Humbling and rewarding! #HCPSTeach
I agree ... in the movie, the reporter tells Barnum “I may not have liked your show, but I think the people do ... it’s more of a celebration of humanity.” The movie actually refers to these people as “oddities” because “even their moms were ashamed of them” ... #HCPSTeach
A3: I have no idea but I think it starts with the belief that all students can learn. That all students should be respected. And that we need to help them find their SHINE✨ @LaVonnaRoth#HCPSTeach
By being that positive teacher that believes in them, in their abilities and their choices. I love seeing/hearing accomplishments outside of school. Not every achievement is academic and we should celebrate who they are #hcpsteach
Barnum didn’t “put them on display” to make fun of them ... but to help them make money from what people would do naturally ... they actually “come together to form a family” #HCPSTeach

Yes! I remember in a chat a teacher shared a calendar bulletin board where students could post their extracurricular events. What a great way to build culture and support one another. #HCPSTeach

We can just go ahead and stand for all students. We surely didn’t become teachers just to teach those who come will a full backpack. The ones that need our love the most are usually the hardest to love. #HCPSTeach

Preach! In some ways those that come with full backpacks make our jobs easy ... I am pleased when I see students who have what they need to learn ... my heart reaches out to and for those that don’t! ;) #HCPSTeach

A4: discussed problem of practice with principals today/focusing on locus of control. That’s all we can do. We can’t control the state. Politics. Cabinet or school board choices. We can control how we run our school day to day and make Ss and Ts feel when they go home #HCPSTeach

A4 Obstacles - negativity (so easy to get caught up in it) ... PLN? I love working with my office/class mate @lmajphd ... she is a great sounding board and a positive voice!

Yes! What can we control! Going back into the classroom this year, I did find that some of the advice or suggestions I gave to teachers are a bit more challenging (my apologies to all those I tried to inspire) :) #HCPSTeach

A4 I think my biggest obstacle is time and work life balance. It was much better this last year. Looking forward to doing @Angela_Watson ‘s July Cohort for 40HourWorkWeek #hcpsteach

Goals, yes! Dreams? Right now they seem to be about testing. I’m going to work on having some real dreams soon! There...can that be my dream? 🤪👍😄 #HCPSTeach

For now ... YES! Maybe the short term dream is “less testing” ... but soon — you’ll have a goal! We all seem to be highly driven people ... not satisfied with where we are! :) #HCPSTeach
Think of all that you could share! I think the best thing would be to gift yourself with time each week to just jot down ideas as they come to you. #HCPSTeach
That is a great idea ... that could give me a way to find a focus ... I have my new @participate journal from @EdCampHCPS needing a purpose. .. that could be its purpose! :) #HCPSTeach
