Teresa, MS Literacy Teacher, NY. Looking forward to first staff day Wednesday and Ss start a week from Tuesday. #teachpos
Trying to get some last minute reading in before the end of the summer!
Hey #teachpos! Alicia from NC - Lead Digital Learning & Media Innovation Facilitator at a slammin' STEM magnet middle school - eating some French Toast Crunch and wishing my kids were already in bed, lol!
#teachpos - Ray, K-8 Instructional Math Coach from Rhode Island.
Make sure to check out #edChatRI right after this at 8pm EST. We are talking about students and teachers reflection tonight.
A1: I create a learning environment where my students must work together for the first few assignments. Connections and laughter are inevitable. #teachpos
A1: My first few days, @PHausTechand I have been doing Apps Days where we teach Ss about the different apps. As collaborate with each other and us as we explore them. #teachpos
#teachpos - A1 - Lots of time to collaborate and discuss ideas with each other, with me, and me with them. It allows us all to connect and create an inclusive classroom environment.
Definitely!! We started back to school this past week - my Ss couldn't believe how many books we read together. There are so many great back to school read alouds! What are some of your faves? #TeachPos
A1 - we start on day one with a positive word of the day. Follow with something that makes us special. Lots of moving around class and interacting with each other. A bunch of high fives, hand shakes and 👍 #Teachpos
A1: To jumpstart the connecting in my class, I purposely design lots of opportunities for my new Ss to work together to build things. Watching the connections begin to bloom between Ss is just amazing - and I learn so much about my Ss from observing their interactions! #teachpos
A1 Before the Bell, just talking and listening to Ss. In the classroom, circle up & morning meeting. Lots of read alouds and social stories as well as time to talk. #teachpos
A1: I greet all at the door and say goodnight every afternoon. On a more specific note-Friday (2nd day of school), we took the afternoon and built many things from boxes. Lots of collaborating, sharing, and having fun were shown. #TeachPos
A1: This past week in our Lab, instead of focusing on procedures and dos/donts, we took time to have the students discuss scenarios. We spent time focusing on listening to what people are saying/not saying, in addition to communicating appropriately. #teahpos
A1: Teambuilding activities w/in class. Plan on doing them weekly to build classroom community. Also try to show my Ss the power of branding and connecting w outside experts w Twitter and LinkedIn, especially this year! #teachpos
A1 They will build connections with each other with a Smart Start activity where they interview a peer and present the information they learn. Then reverse the interview process #teachpos
I am getting there! First official day back is also Wed for me. I went in on Friday and did my bulletin board in the hallway. I still have a lot to do!!! I have been planning at home a lot #teachpos
A1: freshman interaction day where they can explore the school and walk their schedule w/other freshman. Family cookout. Our school is built around pbl. Students must be good partners and contributors to ensure the project gets completed.
#TeachPos
A1: For my intervention classes I enjoy spending the first day handing out their folders and giving them a chance to decorate them. It's a great time for talking and getting to know one another. #teachpos
A1~ Started last week doing home visit walk abouts~ 20 for 20 homes visited where we @_mlb25 delivered welcome trinkets to our littles. So fun & great #relationship building ... also created these new welcome cards for our classroom updates 😊... #teachpos#teachpos
A1: Book tastings are wonderful ways to get our students interested in reading. it also gives them a positive experience with the librarian(s) when a light refreshment is served during the visit. A cool sip and a warm, cozy, self-selected book. Ah, what an experience! #teachpos
A2: A smile goes a long way! Allowing my Ss to own the media space by choosing furniture, colors, and showcasing 8th grade puzzles each year. The culture is a "no meanness zone" and they know it. #teachpos
A2: I teach “Thumper’s Rule” the first day. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. We then model how to respectfully disagree. #teachpos
A2: During 1st week, we read "All Are Welcome Here" @AgentPenfold - its words/pictures paved the way for great discussion about our similarities/differences, and each Ss designed their personal puzzle piece to show that though we're different, we all FIT together! #teachpos
Crazy, but amazing - the beginning of the kinder year is an uphill climb with routines and Ss learning to separate from parents, but it's so much fun to meet my new students and get to know them as they get to know each other! #teachpos
A2 - First day of school Mantras
1. Make the class your class
2. Do great work for you.
3. Be true to yourself
4. Judgement free Shap’s Class
5. Love your learning. #TeachPos
A2: This week we are continuing to use names as a literacy lesson. We are also learning about mindfulness, zones of regulation, and the calming corner. #TeachPos
A2: it all starts w team-building activities from the first week. Leave out the content to the second class, at least!! Ss have to start by building that rapport to be able to open up later on when it matters. #teachpos
A2: I use active listening and teach my SS Also we use turn and talk, think pair share, and Give Me 5 where a SS can interrupt class to share Ive slowly out raise your hand and we have normal convos #teachpos
#teachpos - A2 - I start from day one discussing proper "Math Talk" and I make bookmarks and a poster for my room out of this image that has sentence starters for proper math discussion.

A1. Going through checking out books routines with Ss in library, using shelf markers, showing Ss where books are located, assigning 5th grade Ss shelves their responsible for keeping in order and books pushed out so that they can be seen! #teachpos
A2: you cant create a safe environment without buy-in and a foundation. A foundation is only formed when you take the time to learn about someone. Buy in only occurs when everyone feels like they have a voice. When these are in place then the environment is primed.

A2 Cultivate a community that is shared by offering guidance, creating a shared space, giving choices, and listening to your students in what they want. Some of my Ss act out & giving them a fresh start is huge! #teachpos

I spent most of my week in Kinder supporting several students and teachers. It’s really eye opening and an uphill battle at first. Seeing routines established and smiles is amazing. #teachpos
A2 I set the stage early that we are a community, and that we are stronger when we work together. This year I want to focus on the saying "A rising tide lifts all boats" to drive the point home. #teachpos
A2~
The environment is built upon...

Open mindedness

Teaching & learning is a joint effort ❤️

MARY!!! Y'all... this lady right here.... stop whatever you're doing and follow her! We worked together in nearly every MLS assignment and she's phe-nom-enal. #teachpos#BeKindEDU#122edchat#waledchat#tlap#tlchat
A2: During week one, my 7th graders read Gary Soto's short story "Seventh Grade." Then, I give them categories for four stanzas, & we write a poem about our own first day of school. My students enjoy the activity. Parents/Guardians hear samples at Back-to-School Night. #teachpos
A2. By building relationships, creating an environment of trust, encouraging Ss to talk and share about themselves, their cultures, and what they bring to the table! #teachpos
A3: It all begins with truly knowing your students and celebrating who they are as individuals. Then, find ways to allow them to shine as the moment arises. #teachpos
A3: First you've got to find out about these unique talents, etc through building T/S relationships. Then build S/S relationships by allowing Ss time to learn from one another... gallery walk with interests for the win! #teachpos
A3:My Ss all have a class jobs. I create/assign the jobs based on Ss unique skills/interest. One S loves organization and has eye for detail- so I asked if she wanted to sort/return lunch cards each day and she was THRILLED! The jobs empower Ss and strengthen our class! #teachpos
#teachpos - A3 - This comes from giving students voice and choice in your classroom. When you give Ss multiples different ways to show their thinking, their individuality usually shows up pretty quickly.
A3 - The Art of Teaching is learning those skills and talents that students show each day. We do an activity called an “me Bag.” It showcase the interests and talents of each student. #TeachPos
A3 Know your community and provide opportunities for all to shine. Whether you teach elementary or HS, celebrate what a student gives as well as how they grow! #teachpos
A3: I think I start by really getting to know my Ss and keep on following closely on a weekly basis. After, I can see how they have unique abilities and insights to offer. Can’t do w/o knowing them well! #Teachpos
A3 When I am putting groups together I try and balance different strengths so that everyone can contribute something to the final product/discussion/answer. As I learn more about Ss, it also takes me much longer to make the groups. So much data to consider. #teachpos
A3: We are completely revamping our assessments to figure in more choice and student voice in demonstration of outcomes for each engagement. Instead of Slides, why not podcasts, vlogs, websites, sketchnotes? The list could go on for days. #teachpos

Great tips! Waiting on content so that relationships can be front and center helps Ss see how much value we place on connections/relationship building. #TeachPos
A3: Here are 2 of many examples. We built a memorial garden in tribute to the Port Authority Patrolman/Dad who was lost on 9/11 while saving lives. We write PSAs, & the local radio station features 5 Ss & me each year on their morning show. #teachpos
A3~starting on day 1 the Ss interests, talents, etc should be the driving force of creativity/integration/instructional practices happening in the classroom ~ invested Ss, as we all know, SOAR when they are interested & treated as partners in education
#TeachPos
Exactly! There's a science behind content and pedagogy but there's an art to connecting with the students authentically! Anyone can pick up a lesson plan and read it verbatim to Ss... it's the great ones that master the "art"! #teachpos
Fresh starts are so important to build solid connections. Everyone has a bad day or bad moment here and there, but to know you're safe and can have a fresh start is life-giving! #teachpos
#teachpos - Great chat tonight!
Don't forget to join me right after this at 8pm EST for #edChatRI. We will be talking about students and teacher reflection.
Zones of regulation is a system for students to monitor their emotions and help them to be in control of them. I am using a chameleon theme from TPT by Bright Futures Counseling to relate colors to emotions. #TeachPos
Bonus: I have a child who is autistic and recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes... this gives me more empathy with my Ss, but not sympathy. I never want them (or my daughter) to use diagnoses as excuses. #teachpos
Bonus. While I wish this wasn’t the case, I try to always bring energy and positivity to my class and school. It’s a requirement! Not everyone does this. I’m hoping this can change. #TeachPos
What a great chat!! Thanks so much for connecting with us at #teachpos tonight - and special thanks to @Shapiro_WTHS for allowing me to guest moderate!
