Learned about #XPLAP during #hivesummit. May not have a lot to contribute but i am hanging out to learn. Jaime- 6th grade science and ELA teacher -South Jersey.

HELLO HELLO! I'm Nebraska(Rebecca) Hamilton from Indiana. ELA with amazing seventh graders! I'm interested in expanding my craft with #XPLAP and you all are a huge part of that so HEY. I'm ready!
John 3rd grade from STL MO. Haven't started it yet but general theme is detectives as a Carmen San Diego "reboot" in same way there's a FullerHouse, Girl Meets World. Old is new again ;) #XPLAP
Hey #xplap - Alicia from NC popping in and out tonight - gotta finish sorting these lego sets from my girls mixing them up this summer. I can't handle it.
Hello, I am Michael Matera
Author of #XPLAP
Founder of #HiveSummit
And dad to one good interviewer...
MY theme is Realm of Nobles. Check it out at realmofnobles.comm
Alex Talmadge from Spring Lake, MI. I teach 3rd grade and I'm considering a pirate/sea exploration theme this year. This will be my first time gamifying! #xplap
#XPLAP Rich Anderson—9th grade Global History in North Syracuse (NY). First time in the #xplap chat! Working on taking my gamification to the next level.
Ryan from Winnipeg, Manitoba. My business classes will eventually (hopefully) be reality-TV themed, Apprentice-style, with Big Brother, Survivor and game-show themed challenges. #XPLAP
✨☠️Hey, #XPLAP Friends! I'm Kimberly from Nebraska, and I teach 7th grade ELA! Love tonight's theme themed chat! I so need this one! I'm ready to Explore Like a Pirate in my 1st yearlong gamified class. My theme: not sure on the name... Master the Maze Like a Pirate? ☠️✨
Howdy #XPLAP folks! Clark Davis here. 11th grade ELA. My theme was post-apocalyptic, but everything changed! (Looooong story). I still love post-apocalyptic though 😁
Mike Wielgus, IT coach from Illinois...we gamified our Google Cert Training with 2 games...one a secret agent theme, the other an 80s video game theme #xplap
Welcome to #XPLAP for the next 30 minutes we will be building community together. Remember to follow those in this chat as they are all super stars! Please introduce yourself.
Welcome Tim! So awesome having you here. Thanks for joining the Live Chat on my channel the other day. That was fun to see some people I felt connected with. #XPLAP
A1: I'm basing my game on a few books- The Sisters Grimm (Fairy Tale Detectives) and another book called Tom Trueheart (about fairy tale endings being stolen/changed) Plus throwing in mystery related ideas. #XPLAP
A1 - Like my first answer, I'll be exploring and researching a number of team challenges from reality TV shows like Big Brother and Survivor, as well as business themed ones from The Apprentice and The Pitch. #XPLAP
A1. As mentioned, post-apocalyptic is my face, but it's huge in pop culture now too with Hunger Games, Maze Runner, The Fallout video game series. Can't go wrong. Kids love it! #XPLAP
a1) Harry potter still seems to be pretty popular around my school. I like the hunger games fighting element, that could be fun to put in for short things. #xplap
#XPLAP I am a newbie on this journey & my theme will be Cybersecurity Unit. Here is my storyline. Any feedback welcome - Ss were really excited and me too
https://t.co/BOc0S99FvY
A1: I’ve been thinking - possibly survivor or amazing race. I was leaning towards Amazing Race because of the teamwork aspect and how they set up challenges. #XPLAP
A1: I love the idea of a competition like Hunger Games or even Survivor. Helps Ss develop collaborative skills, teamwork, how to deal with wins/losses. Also will help with Ss leadership. #XPLAP
#XPLAP A1 our teachers in several departments have all chosen Game of Thrones houses. We may have students create their own houses or banners to work under. (Obviously scrubbed for content, but most of our students watch anyway since we teach HS)
I'm Andi from Wisconsin. I have a unique role as a co-servicer with a pair of biology teachers second semester. I'd love to bring #gamification to the classes but am still in need of inspiration. That's why I'm here! #XPLAP
KELLI!!!!! So excited to see you here! Y'all... stop and follow this lady! She's all kinds of awesome with amazingness sprinkled on top. (And she's from my state, woot!) #xplap
A1 Lots of inspiration from Harry Potter and the fantasy genre in general. Borrowing some plot points like recovering powerful magical artifacts & rescuing a NPC hero that can then help the group in an epic battle. #xplap
A1. Carmen was all about geography/location so that is no brainer. Side quest could drive learning deeper abt cultures. Opens door for Mystery Skypes too #XPLAP
#XPLAP A1 I am still working on my theme. Thinking a dystopian future w/5 groups vying for power but they have to piece together history (which has been forgotten) to gain control. Thinking elements of hunger games and survivor
A1
✨☠️✨☠️✨
SURVIVOR
I love how the teams are fluid (to a certain extent), and also love incorporating physical movement and challenges into my game. Students love to get up and moving too! #XPLAP ✨☠️
A1: Inspiration strikes at strange times. Bringing in thematic elements from reality game shows could be fun. Elimination challenges, silly challenges just for laughs & culture building, & opportunities for reflection. #xplap
Hello #XPLAP! I am Heather, Music teacher from NY.
My welcome theme is Mabel- and the students will all choose their own character. My sons think I must have been just like Mabel as a child - she’s adorable & likes shiny things... I’ll take it!
A1: Looking for Archetypes helps also having opposite situations rendering the strength become weak like being metal but in an MRI or having the wizard powerless during a certain spell and only a muggle can help #xplap
A1 A theme I want to try next year is Stranger Things. Your can pick one of the kids as your character, get missions from the Sheriff, and fight the demogorgons along the way as boss battles. #XPLAP
A1-a: So I’m thinking of having a Flipgrid confessional for reflections, kind of like how Big Brother has theirs to provide context & what contestants are thinking. #xplap
#xplap A1: I am using stations in my classroom, so I will be using ideas from Survivor, Jeopardy, and anything Medieval or Elizabethan. Students will be in teams, make a team crest, write a description about their team. Then, they will begin their challenges.
A1: Divergent is always great for a dystopian theme bc Ss can be sorted into factions and could even have them be involved in the choosing through character trait attributes they feel they meet #xplap
#XPLAP A1 The theme I am using is “Gaia” baes on the Gaia ecological Hypothesis and Gaia one of the primordial deities. I thought this would work well for my HS Bio class.
A2: Horse gets hurt, jockey has the flu, flat tire on horse trailer on the way to race, rain on the track so mud is flying everywhere, etc, etc, etc. #xplap
My theme for the first part of the year is Splatoon! Homework incentives and a few other little ideas so far. I’ll make the majority of it up as I go along. #XPLAP
A1 #xplap I like elements from Survivor, Fear Factor, The price is Right mini games and showcase, and Hollywood Squares. I have only used Jeopardy in the past, but after the hivesummit I'm pumped with gamification ideas!! I might even find a way to make a whammie board.
A2: I have a map in my game and one area "The Forgotten Realm" will continue to take over the kingdom as the real story endings are being stolen/changed but I'm not going to tell them. I wonder which student will notice first? #XPLAP
Vincent... That is the way to do it... Put a little into play and see and make adjustments. Then develop the next stage or idea. Works like a charm! #XPLAP
A2 Continuing the theme from Stranger Things. You could combine events from the tv show into the classroom. Season 1 had one of kids disappear, if you teach social studies you could have a key figure disappear and the students have to figure out where they went. #xplap
A2: Utilizing Suvivor, Ss would need to gather supplies. These could be taken out by bad weather, storms, other team taking their items. Always about practicing those improv skills and where the Ss take it! #XPLAP
#xplap A2 One thing I like about my potential theme is the ability to tie in actual historic events I teach.... wars, epidemics (Black Death), and even innovations that were game changers.
I am getting SO much inspiration! I'm going to have them make their own countries. They are going to have National Achievement Points when they, as a class, succeed. However, this also means that ANYTHING can happen to their country; war, famine, high unemployment rate... #XPLAP
A2: With a time traveling society of gold lovers trying to install a Golden Skull into important events from throughout history, each opportunity we get to examine a particular time & place without the influence of the “Golden Skull Society” is important. #xplap
A1:
Jurassic Park: Finding DNA on successful “digs” to create dinos for your Park.
Smash Bros: Unlocking new challengers as they complete assignments.
Wrestling: Offer positive feedback in the form of Flipgrid promos. #XPLAP
A2: All the fun obstacles in fairy tales will cause issues for my fairy tale detectives- giant beanstalks will block their way, sleeping potions, being turned into frogs, etc... #XPLAP
Love it! That is the power of the #XPLAP community. We are a group of doers... Which means we have plenty of ideas to share. This chat is always rocking with ideas that you can use in your classes. Thanks for being a part of it!
I am Jen, Tech Lab Teacher. My first theme is Animal Tracks. Tragically all the animals have escaped the wildlife reserve and must be recovered! #xplap
A2: At one point we the guilds are sailing in their own ships and have to battle a hurricane. Their ability to complete challenges to prepare their ships helps determine how much damage their ship takes. #xplap
A2: weather postponing ships carrying needed goods, werewolf on the loose keeps you limited in travel times, laws passed that you have to find ways to work around or avoid capture #xplap
#XPLAP A2 I teach Oklahoma History so , dust bowl, drought, ww1 and ww2 are all obvious, real life things I could pull from. But sometimes crazy things happen in OK too, locust and Jack rabbit plagues also happened
A2: Since Marvel and DC have a multitude of Multiverses and are in different universes, any cosmological phenomena can drive the universes together, apart, or overlap in some way. A celestial in Marvel Universe stumbles upon the dimension of DC ,,,#xplap
A2. Plan to have Miranda (Carmens grown daughter) carry on by stealing time machine and identity theft device. She could go back and halt computer invention so we're stuck using pencil and paper #Xplap
a2) we will have some earthquakes and volcanoes since it's for an earth science class (I don't think that happened in the civilization games though) #XPLAP
A2a: Mini challenges based on current events & news will make for timely opportunities to examine what happened vs what is said to have happened. How was the narrative skewed by particular lenses. #xplap
A2: With Amazing Race in mind: weather, illness, disagreements, direction issues.. getting lost from one challenge to another. Still thinking.... #XPLAP
That sounds awesome. It could also be as simple or as complex as you wanted, maybe a 5 minute challenge at the beginning of the hour or other times huge event. #xplap
I did that with my house sorting for Harry Potter. I had them take a sorting quiz and then shared attributes for each house after. I let them have a say by filling out a Google Form if they wanted to be in a dif house. Had to tell me why. Then we did a sorting ceremony. #xplap
#XPLAP A2. Because my theme of Gaia is already ecologically based, the events of pandemic and weather will be ones that I will use. But I am also going to use invasive species and resource scarcity.
A2: I can see a randomized "crisis" area that would effect the students ability to do their work. Business-themed, of course. Shipment delayed, credit-card machines go down, road closures in front of your store, etc. #XPLAP
How fun and educational would it be to have some of the “fake news” that is so rampant now days drive an event. It could expand the narrative in multiple ways. #XPLAP
These are just twists and turns to the main plot of your game. Mine for example during our China unit, we decend into a scary period where students can't trust anyone. We are in a civil war! #XPLAP
A2 #xplap My previously stated whammie board could throw a curve ball into a game. Also secret side quests and bonus levels that unlock with points or achievements. Surprise boss battles Final Fantasy style. Customizable weapons/items that have a limited life.
A3: See??? This is why I'm on here, I didn't even THINK of that. The first thing that pops into my head... If we are our own country in our Core classes... We should have a "Passport" instead of a Hall Pass! #XPLAP
A2 I thought of playing the role of the villain pirate who is trying to hide treasure or clues. Also storms could get in the way where crews have to repair their ship or join a different ship for the time being. #xplap
A3: Theme: Mission to Mars. Late Homework pass: oxygen tank. Powerful opportunity to advance your XP: Electron Microscope. I made a list of what might be in the lab/ spaceship and then found ways to tie them to the theme. #XPLAP
You never know what could happen when time travelers start messing with stuff... it did all kinds of crazy things to the narrative in The Flash. #xplap
I teach ELA so they have to come up with 5 similes about their ship, use 5 vocabulary terms correctly in a sentence, etc. My favorite was adding a dice roll at the end. If the complete all 5 challenges, 5 numbers are safe, but if I roll a 6 they take massive damage. #xplap
#xplap A3 This is one aspect of my potential theme that I am having trouble with. Dystopian future with time travel back to collect history to gain power—ideas?
I need to talk to you!!! I am in a new position where I will be providing PD. Just came from a gasified class and want to add the same power to PD. Are you available for a hangout? #XPLAP
a3) switch team item - teleporter
'attack' another player - phaser
block another player - EM shield
remove a question from test - supernova
remove a multiple choice option - light saber
#XPLAP
#xplap yes! Having fun doing this. Like the launch sequence for a "quiz". anybody have ideas what to call a bathroom pass for cybersecurity theme?I will only have class work assigments that will be missions.
I have a production item. Maybe if they stockpile too much of that it could turn into pollution. Too much pollution and something bad happens (limited food, water contaminated) #XPLAP
It is always the best to be an adaptive teacher... and game designer. Thanks for checking out #XPLAP, both the book and the chat! Hope to see you more this year!
Thanks everyone for joining the chat on #XPLAP about theme. I hope you join in the fun next week! Also check out https://t.co/YCH10eLlXN for more ideas, a podcast, a youtube channel and more!
Their ships have XP. The ship with the most XP at the end of the quarter earned a treasure chest. Big damage was losing half of their XP for their ship. Keep the questions coming. #xplap
A3 #xplap I'm thinking Legend of Zelda.
lantern = hall pass
Bombs = eraser/remove an element of the assignment
Hearts = extra time
Navi = help when stuck
Boomerang = add a player for feedback
Master Sword = turned in assignment & ready for quiz
Too many ideas!!
Thanks for another epic chat #xplap. The half hour flies by, but it’s perfect for us east coasters who stay up late to participate! Thanks gang! See you next week!
Thanks @mrmatera for a great chat. Very interesting and engaging topic and discussion. Will be back to learn more and promoting this idea to my Ts! (For next year since we begin school on Monday!) Glad to make some new connections! Have a great night group! #XPLAP
