Welcome to #G2Great friends. We are so delighted to have guests Jeff & Whitney with us tonight to celebrate their remarkable new book. So happy to be here with co moderators Amy Jenn and Fran @brennanamy@hayhurst3@franmcveigh
Hi #g2great friends! I’m so happy i made it tonight. I recently purchased #PatternsofPower and cannot wait to embed this philosophy into our Balanced Literacy curriculum!! Lauren, Instructional Coach-LI, NY!
Hi everyone! Cameron Carter from Columbus,OH! Second grade teacher and @ncte Elementary Lead Ambassador! SO HAPPY to be chatting with all of you!! #g2great
Hi, friends! So glad to be here tonight to learn from the best PLN! Mollie from Ohio. I teach 2nd grade. Mentor sentences are a favorite component of our daily learning. #g2great
Hi #g2great friends. Lisa, a literacy specialist from Massachusetts. I loved the @writeguyjeff & @whitney_larocca presentation at #ncte17 and immediately bought the book afterward.
A1 We need to encourage the love of reading and love of books. Students need to find what speaks to them, need to be engaged, need to build their passions. We are there to support them. Give them suggestions. Share diverse books. #g2great
A1: Studying the language in books honors various styles of writing, authors’ craft, different discourses and dialects. I am so happy the NGLS are calling attention to playing w language. #g2great
Q1: When I think of "bathe," I think of submerging in a warm environment and relaxing. Bathing in reading creates an informal and leisurely activity that anyone can enjoy. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A1 I just made an incredible mind movie of my Ss sitting fully clothed in a large bathtub stacked with books! So powerful to use mentor texts to show writing and to introduce Ss to books to get lost in time and again. #G2great
A1 I really think we do better, and want to do better, with things we enjoy. If we bathe them in reading they will love it and enjoy it and in turn read for pleasure which is a goal when becoming literate #g2great
A1: I tell my Ss the more they read the better they will write. I have seen it more and more as Ss craft worlds beyond their own experience. Giving them exposure to the words will help them create their own. #g2great
Making the connection for literacy learners between reading and writing helps them better understand both as reciprocal processes #patternsofpower ❤️ #g2great
A1: When we stop and gasp and admire, we develop the culture of literacy that inspires students to not only appreciate, but also want to create. #G2Great
A1 Luxuriating in the language of books exposes Ss to author craft, fosters writing skills, encourages imagination, develops empathy, and it is just plain fun! #G2Great
A1: Bathe students in RICH literature that they can make connections with! It's so important for the students to begin loving the joy of reading at an early age! ❤️📚 #G2Great
A1: Literature, especially beautiful literature, opens up a world of possibilities to children. Possibilities on how to be a person in the world or possibilities to live the life one oU dreams of. #G2Great
A1 Bathing students in the language of books is super important for #ELLs bc it gives them opportunities to experience the English language-- language structures that may be different from their native language. #g2great
Crowdsourcing: What's your number one problem/issue/hangup related to the teaching of writing? Looking for feedback from all subjects/grades. Thanks #PLN! #edchat
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A1 When we read & become transformed by words & realize as writers we possess that same power...Shazam⚡️magic can happen! The power to heal, to ignite a curiosity/ a passion, to transcend!
Making the connection for literacy learners between reading and writing helps them better understand both as reciprocal processes #patternsofpower ❤️ #g2great
Oh...it's creepy!!!! Ours is coming tonight for the kids and I think I might present him in a little coffin. Would that be terrible? I can say that death is part of life! #G2Great

A1 Luxuriating in the language of books exposes Ss to author craft, fosters writing skills, encourages imagination, develops empathy, and it is just plain fun! #G2Great
A1: When we stop and gasp and admire, we develop the culture of literacy that inspires students to not only appreciate, but also want to create. #G2Great
A1: the importance of allowing Ss to explore a myriad texts is so that they can make real choices on their reading and can engage with books in much of the same way adults do. They can feel ownership and autonomy & collect data for future reading experiences #G2Great#bowtieboys
A1: Language is craft, a science (if you will) of reading. When students notice great writing, their appreciation for books and the writing process increases. #G2Great
A1: Without writers, we wouldn't need readers. Without readers, writers would be necessary. It's just natural to teach them together and reinforce that relationship.
#G2Great
A1 Readers are writers and writers are readers...Once we help students discover (or rediscover) the joy of reading, it's just a short hop to the joy of writing #g2great
We celebrate the idea that every student is a writer! Mentor texts guide all of us in developing our writing voice and celebrating the craft of others. #G2Great#edchatme#NWP
A1: Literacy is the key to opportunities, to self-fulfillment, to success, to access to experiences, to the world, to ourselves. It needs to be infused w/ joy bcz it is essential to joy #g2great
A1: Literature provides children with language they can replicate in their lives and in their writing. It provides language that helps them make sense of the world. #G2Great
Immerse students in the language of books to show that authors use language in purposeful ways to create meaning & to give students writing mentors they can learn from. #g2great
A1: Literature, especially beautiful literature, opens up a world of possibilities to children. Possibilities on how to be a person in the world or possibilities to live the life one oU dreams of. #G2Great
Q 1: It creates a passion for books in children. I had such an amazing moment this week when one of my students told me she was addicted to books. That is my goal. #G2Great
Making the connection for literacy learners between reading and writing helps them better understand both as reciprocal processes #patternsofpower ❤️ #g2great
A2: Because it shows (not just tells) the ways conventions work in service of meaning! That is the whole (exclamation) point! #G2Great#PatternsofPower@stenhousepub
A2 One of the best ways to learn is through model or mentor texts. Look at texts with your students, study them, and find what works, what doesn’t. What conveys emotions? Students can learn a lot by looking at other work. Use your own work to model learning. #g2great
A1: Letting students bathe in the language of books allows them to fully experience the power, the purpose, and the meaning behind the words that shape their world. In short, bathing in the language of books empowers minds. #G2Great
A2: I feel like it is becoming more and more important as technology makes students take for granted the purpose of conventions. Auto correct tells them what to do, they don't understand why #g2great
A2 Communication is an essential skill then, now, and in the future. Examining the conventions in others' writing helps develop S decision making. #G2Great
A1 Bathing students in the language of books is super important for #ELLs bc it gives them opportunities to experience the English language-- language structures that may be different from their native language. #g2great
A2: Meaning is communicated through language. Conventions help provide the pace, the rhythm for that meaning. They are also like road signs, giving direction and clarity. #G2Great
A2: Studying the conventions authors use to convey meaning reveals the “why.” This study can be grounded in authentic as opposed to isolated tasks. #G2Great
A1:
"Once I began to read, I began to exist. I am
what I read—all the books, all the papers, all
the stories. I think that’s what I’ve always been.
Writing is just an extension of my reading life."
- Walter Dean Myers from "I am what I read" #g2great
A2: Writing is all about choices. We write to make meaning for our readers. We study the choices writers make to turn around and make our own choices effectively. #G2Great
A2: Studying authors’ conventions enables the reader to carry out and deliver the meaning behind the messages the author intends to convey. If ignored, the message is clouded. #g2great
A1: I believe joyfully bathing helps Ss find power of story through love of language. They begin to understand nuances of the writer's craft & how choices create effects. That's when it becomes fun & they want to try it. They see the author & want to be seen themselves. #G2great
A2 Without Ss creating meaning, the author's message is lost or diluted. Ss need to ask themselves "why did the author do that?" Ts need to encourage healthy dialog. #G2great
Q2: This is really important, as writers we know what we wish to convey, but it may not always be clear to our reader. It is craft which allows the world in our head to transfer to the page. #G2Great
One of my favorite @writeguyjeff quotes is that conventions are an agreement between the writer and the reader to help create meaning ... I may have taken credit for the brilliance once or twice with my students... #sorry#notsorry#g2great
A2 It's essential to examine conventions because emulation is powerful. If they can see how something is done, and why, they can use it for their own unique purposes. #g2great
A2: Meaning is communicated through language. Conventions help provide the pace, the rhythm for that meaning. They are also like road signs, giving direction and clarity. #G2Great
Q 1: It creates a passion for books in children. I had such an amazing moment this week when one of my students told me she was addicted to books. That is my goal. #G2Great
A2 I tell my kids that punctuation is how we communicate what our writing should sound like when we're not there to read it out loud. It helps us say what we mean without speaking. #g2great
A2 looking at this can help Ss incorporate their voice into their writing. It breathes life into their piece. Authors do this so it’s important our little authors do it as well. #g2great
A1. Ss need to see that readers are writers and writers are readers. Bathing in the language of texts is a great way to expose Ss to language and allow them see it used in an authentic context in which they can attempt to emulate #G2Great
A2. That's it in a nutshell! It's the "why" that is the foundation of all literacy acquisition. We are meaning-seekers and conventions help us uncover it. #G2great
A2: I feel like it is becoming more and more important as technology makes students take for granted the purpose of conventions. Auto correct tells them what to do, they don't understand why #g2great
A2 We can demonstrate to Ss that writers make intentional choices in order to impact their readers. These are decisions Ss have the power to make in their own writing. #G2Great
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A2 It is afterall about meaning isn’t it! To realize the level of thoughtfulness & intentionality in every word that’s carefully selected to be on that page in that very place, it’s a treasure map for readers!
A2: also essential to learn that "rules" are not so much important as "communicating." Ss can learn to use language that communicates without hangups on rules. #G2Great
A2: if we want our Ss to be able to communicate clearly we need to show them examples of superb communication. Authors present their readers with enormous ideas in few words - that’s a skill. One that must be taught & one that is beneficial in the real world #g2great#bowtieboys
Every week I’m inspired that our passionate #G2Great family trends on Twitter. Think about it - teachers learning on a Thursday night for one reason alone - to enhance the learning lives of KIDS!
A1 Immersing, baptizing, bathing--whatever you call it, books are essentials in the lives of kids. They learn so much about themselves and others. And if we coach them to read with "writer's eyes" they also breathe in powerful ways to become writers themselves. #G2Great
A2)I've found the more we study authors craft, word choice and conventions in a manner which invites Ss to try the same, my Ss feel empowered to take risks and go deeper w/ word choice and conventions. #g2great
#G2Great#kellerliteracy A1: I love seeing the light in students’ eyes when they understand the meaning of a passage after a minute of careful contemplation.
Every week I’m inspired that our passionate #G2Great family trends on Twitter. Think about it - teachers learning on a Thursday night for one reason alone - to enhance the learning lives of KIDS!
Me too; this is something that I have already taken back to my classroom and students are engaged with in independent reading and writing. #patternsofpower#G2Great
A2 mentor sentences help teach conventions in an authentic context. Ss will forget drill and kill practice because it doesn’t always generalize to their own writing. Show them a real author’s craftful use of conventions and you are sure to see it pop up in their writing #G2Great
A2 Examining the choices of other writers develops critical thinking and skills of observation. We want our Ss to have a writer’s eye and it begins by seeing craft in action. #G2Great#NWP
A2: Writers dev their own style by examining authors' work that connects w/ them & figuring out the aspects they want to play with. How magical that these structures exist to be decoded & our ss can participate in creating their own #g2great
A3 Just as we have shifted our focus in math to understanding the why, not just the how--this shift needs to happen in teaching conventions, too. #g2great
A2 Examining the choices of other writers develops critical thinking and skills of observation. We want our Ss to have a writer’s eye and it begins by seeing craft in action. #G2Great#NWP
A3 Learning through examples is always better than rules. Rules require memorization. They don’t ensure that you can transfer into other contexts. Using texts is more authentic. You can see how conventions are being used and use them as models. #g2great
A2: This practice gives my writers the tools to take over their own learning--they aren't limited to learning what I teach them. They have the power to notice and learn about any patterns they see in books! #g2great
#G2great So true! Mentioned to my Ss that we will be taking a brief detour soon to do a mini-poetry unit and overheard a S say, you mean the "rhyming stuff?" I replied, rhyme is only one type of poetry...need to open eyes to bigger things!
A2 mentor sentences help teach conventions in an authentic context. Ss will forget drill and kill practice because it doesn’t always generalize to their own writing. Show them a real author’s craftful use of conventions and you are sure to see it pop up in their writing #G2Great

A3: Bc it is a sustainable practice that teaches Ss to rely on texts & on themselves rather than on the teacher! It shows Ss their power! #PatternsofPower#G2Great@BurkinsandYaris
A3 Simply put, students don’t have ownership of rules. It seems more authoritarian than having the agency to dabble and study the patterns and situations. #G2Great
A3 It's like learning to paint by studying the pattern of van Gogh's brushstrokes or learning to paint by numbers. Are you learning rules or are you learning art? If you learn technique, you figure out how to make it your own. Rules make it someone else's. #g2great
A3: Mentor sentences open up a world of possibility. Asking students to create from a model is more effective than asking them to extrapolate from a rule, one that is usually saturated with foreign nomenclature. #g2great
A3: Just like spelling, "rules" are often broken/bent. So, we teach patterns we find in sentences so we can imitate those patterns in our own writing. #G2Great
A3: This cycle gives my writers the tools to take over their own learning--they aren't limited to learning what I teach them. They have the power to notice and imitate on their own! #g2great#g2great
And that sometimes makes the most interesting writing because it’s so unexpected. Kids can memorize rules but that doesn’t equate to learning. The way the text makes you feel stays with us! #G2Great
#G2great A3 Rules don't always apply - certainly in our lovely American English! Arming Ss w authentic author examples is tangible and makes Ss feel powerful and successful.
A3: Love combining literature, modeling, and freedom to empower students to create their own mentor sentences; both Patterns of Power and Mechanically Inclined give teachers the "roadmap" to do that.... #thanku#g2great
#G2Great#KellerLiteracy A3 We reinforce that which we want to be reciprocated, exposing Ss to examples vs nonexamples just makes sense and it also helps Ss see themselves as writers before editors.
There are few true “rules” in writing. Depending on what you are trying to write/say the writer has the power to convene this. Great examples out there of published work only gives our students more power to explore #g2great
A3: there are no rules 2 what is in a child’s heart or mind. Our job as literacy educators is to give these future leaders the tools 2 effectively communicate these ideas so they can make their individual dreams reality. Rules are elitist - they keep kids out #bowtieboys#g2great
Q3: Great artists and great writers have a certain style that can be seen through a lens of pattern. By studying the masters one can learn the craft better. It’s been going on forever, look at the apprenticeships in The Renaissance. #G2Great
A3: our animal instinct is to notice patterns, not rules. Changing language to patterns for Ss allows them to compress that learning, see it elsewhere, and retrieve it as needed. Rules get lost in the weeds (and neurons). #G2Great
A3 Inviting students to create, notice, and repeat patterns authors use is effective because its experiential and authentic. If they discover the tools and learn how to use them for themselves, they will own their own learning. #g2great
A3: Noticing is something all of our students can do, allowing multiple pathways into a text. It’s generative and a bit messy. Rules are linear and reward those who always stay on the path. #G2Great
A3)I could use a mentor text which offers multiple teaching points and prime examples of rich language or print off a contrived TPT packet. I'll choose books every time! #g2great
A3: Bc it is a sustainable practice that teaches Ss to rely on texts & on themselves rather than on the teacher! It shows Ss their power! #PatternsofPower#G2Great@BurkinsandYaris
So where does "you have to know the rules before you can break them" fit into this? I want my Ss to be the decision-maker not necessarily the "rule-follower." #G2Great
#G2Great A fave sent. found today in S writing: "After dress rehearsal, we walked through the street (like Frosty the Snowman's farewell parade to the train station, in my opinion) to Victor's Cafe."
A3 Don't be afraid to let your students live in discovery. The human mind craves it. No need to rush when the magic can happen at any moment. Teachers must be comfortable letting students explore the land before them. #g2great
A2 W/out understanding conventions we miss the best and most appropriate ways to communicate. Ss need to know and to try out those conventions that can so beautifully tell their stories. A few years ago, a Kinder S saw ellipses in a book and had to try them out. #G2Great
A3: When we teach writers, we give them tools to express themselves. We help them develop their writing by showing them good writing, pointing out amazing craft moves, using peer work as a model, and posting those examples on our walls. #g2great
A2:Words are powerful but conventions wield that power 2 writer's will. Conventions create tone, raise questions, connect or separate ideas. Ss need 2 study great& playful users of conventions& become masters themselves-not 2 fill out a wksht but 2 make their voice clear #G2great
A3 The rules don't transfer. I have been amazed at my Ss use of conventions since we started using mentor sentences consistently. They love learning from other authors. #G2great
A3 students are actively reading with their writers’ eyes and understanding how writers use conventions. Rules require memorization not understanding. Transfer to own writing can happen with undersransing and ability to transfer is enpowering. #G2great
#G2great Sometimes, I actually have to google whether something I like is "kosher" esp if I plan to publish or show to Ss. Maybe I need to be a little more wild w this concept!
I personally think we learn patterns and we break patterns. Every choice a writer makes has an effect. No learn first. Just learn and write and read and respond. #G2great
So where does "you have to know the rules before you can break them" fit into this? I want my Ss to be the decision-maker not necessarily the "rule-follower." #G2Great
That’s so amazing Brent. I think it has a duo purpose - the more you write and share the better YOU get and it has a trickle down effect o kids. Love that #G2Great
One of my favorite parts of Disney’s Lady and the Tramp is when Tramp convinced Lady to break some rules so they could create some memories. Isn’t creating memories better than following rules? #G2Great
A3 Rules carry penalty flags, consequences and punishment...memories of watching the clock for curfew on a first day. To hell with rules. Let's open the engine up a little... #G2Great
Congratulations @Jen_Russ you won! Thank you Thank you @stenhousepub for being so generous! #G2Great Please DM your name and address so we can get it out to you!
A3: Its so much easier to show S what is correct then working together to create the correct ways of writing! S more likely to continue doing it correct! #kellerliteracy#G2Great
That is awesome Brent. I would co-write essays and narrative texts with my students. They love to see the process in action. I show them how I learn and think and write. They help me. It is great collaboration. #g2great
#G2great Honestly, writer's workshop inherently allows us to do this - so incredibly glad that I took the plunge and launched it this year! Still so much to learn!
A4: Look for "errors" that are approximations & then name & show, so Ss can claim and grow into that vision of themselves. #PatternsofPower#G2Great@BurkinsandYaris
A4: Firm believer in errors only being a touch point in conversations and feedback. What they do about the errors is where the conversation goes next. #g2great
A4 Approaching errors in a positive way is always the way to go. Build a growth mindset. See errors as learning. Let students feel comfortable in sharing their mistakes so they can reflect on learning. Teachers need to model this as well. #G2great
A4 To empower students as writers, we should use an asset lens rather than a deficit lens when evaluating student work. Let’s build off their strengths as writers and encourage them to take risks as experience with their writing. #G2Great
I think that allowing students to model the writing of models that they admire in the writing that they read is so important, rather than focusing on "rules." #G2Great
Q4: No matter what these errors are, first and foremost, I think that it's important to enforce an environment that mistakes are okay and everyone makes them. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A4: don’t grade it all. We are not here to fill kid’s writing with our red ink - how arrogant and obtrusive. Grade the skill - not the content. How could we ever mark the opinion of another? The technique, style, grammar, yes - but only after carefully taught #bowtieboys#g2great
Uhhh....this probably wouldn't happen if these teachers were also writers too. They would see how breaking the rules every once in awhile makes writing better. #G2great
A4: Errors are our opportunities to learn. Examine the effect on the reader of the "error." Have S determine how to make meaning clear. Errors=growth! #G2Great
#G2Great#KellerLiteracy A4 errors are simply another lens to look at the possibilities of language, rather than errors think good better best, in which way might we make it most clear for the reader
...this is why I love the idea of taking 5 minutes from writing workshop and 5 minutes from reading workshop...it helps students see that #patternsofpower is a blend of both reading and writing; it is a combo of both. #G2Great
A4: Most errors have some good tucked inside of them. We can look with intention and find something a child has done well along with something new to tackle. #G2Great
A4: Imp to consider purpose in writing experience to determine if examining errors is as important. Somtimes it's just abt getting thoughts/feelings/ideas on the page #g2great
Congratulations @Jen_Russ you won! Thank you Thank you @stenhousepub for being so generous! #G2Great Please DM your name and address so we can get it out to you!
Next semester, with my undergrads, I'm thinking of having them list a bunch of "rules" they have been told over the years and then pass out books to have them find authors who broke those "rules". #G2Great
Congratulations @mrbgilson you won! Thank you to @stenhousepub for these generous book donations! Spreading knowledge and learning to our #g2great PLN. Brent please DM your name and address!
#G2great A4 I have taken a leap of faith this year and am letting Ss guide conferences. I´ḿ not reading w a fine-toothed comb and Iḿ certainly not correcting every error. Using checklists has helped and focusing on the gist of the writing has been key.
Why are 80% of kids choosing NOT to pick up a book after they leave you. Are we inadvertently turning kids off to reading (would you if you had to write about everything you read?) lucycalkins #G2Great#NCTE17
A4: Most errors have some good tucked inside of them. We can look with intention and find something a child has done well along with something new to tackle. #G2Great
A4 Develop a culture where mistakes are learning opportunities. When looking at Ss writing acknowledge the heart in the story, the reflection of self and build a relationship. After, focus on the edits. #G2Great
I love that this focuses attention on student empowerment and learning, rather than a deficit model that focuses on mistakes. It "bathes students in literatures" that helps them learn and teaches them that they are authors too! #g2great
A4: I think focusing on what the student has done well, the risks the students took, and then building there. Guiding the student to next steps through conferring and mentor texts and not red ink on a paper. #g2great
#G2Great If we approach the writing an author does as making choices, then Ss are empowered to make their own choices. If you put in quotation marks, I as your reader know someone is speaking.
A4 during our writing workshop currently we are investigating information writing - so I’m writing my own investigation piece alongside the kids to share the process and all grow from the collaborative learning #G2Great
A3- Authentic connections to beloved characters and how the author draws readers into the story inspires students to try it in their own writing. #G2great
A4 Read their work out loud to them one one one, exactly as it's written, and have them hear where they need conventions. Punctuation makes writing mimic how people talk; they can hear it as you read #g2great
Next semester, with my undergrads, I'm thinking of having them list a bunch of "rules" they have been told over the years and then pass out books to have them find authors who broke those "rules". #G2Great
A4: Use sentence studies, create an anchor chart of “things to remember when we write”, create a mentor text with inevitable errors and discuss those with students, ask what they notice in their own writing & how they might fix it... #g2great
A4: Have to look at why those inevitable errors are happening. Writing is a complicated process, and what are we willing to look past because of what we are seeing. #G2Great
Q4: No matter what these errors are, first and foremost, I think that it's important to enforce an environment that mistakes are okay and everyone makes them. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
Next semester, with my undergrads, I'm thinking of having them list a bunch of "rules" they have been told over the years and then pass out books to have them find authors who broke those "rules". #G2Great
A3 teaching Ss to find patterns is authentic. They look for patterns everywhere and they are easier to associate with. Rules are hard to remember and there are just as many exceptions as there are rules. #g2great
A5 Writing is a window to an author’s soul. Everything has a purpose. Use writing to show how stories can unfold. Use writing and sentences to show techniques and power with words. Start by analyzing your own writing with students. #g2great
Next semester, with my undergrads, I'm thinking of having them list a bunch of "rules" they have been told over the years and then pass out books to have them find authors who broke those "rules". #G2Great
A4: #PatternsofPower says it best in the early pages of the book. We don't need to kill our students with corrections. Inspire them to notice what they are doing in their own writing. THEY ARE WRITING, for God's sake. How beautiful is that? Let's embrace the beautiful. #g2great
Next semester, with my undergrads, I'm thinking of having them list a bunch of "rules" they have been told over the years and then pass out books to have them find authors who broke those "rules". #G2Great
A5 Ss capture examples of great writing from their reading and journals using ReciteThis. We post this creative representations for everyone to see and celebrate. #G2Great#justwrite
A5 When we encourage Ss to attend to sentences that resonate with them and then go back in to unpack why the sentence had an impact, we are modelling reading like writers and celebrating craft choices. #G2great
A5: Model, Practice, Discuss , Repeat. Building on strength just like working out in the gym. Learn to do it right and then do it a lot to get better. Switch it up from time to time :) #g2great
A5: it’s all the good stuff. Ss are NOT confident that they have anything meaningful to say. We need to get to know our kids as people, connect their passions to their talents and guide them to have the courage to unleash this on the world #bowtieboys#G2Great
A5: By drawing attention to it. By bringing it to them, showing them how cool it is, and inviting them to notice on their own. I use writer’s notebooks in my class and I often ask them to find sentences that are structurally “cool”. #g2great
I’m befuddled often lately by the use of the term, “failure”. I think it’s only “failure” if everyone stops trying. Not being successful at the onset or along the way is part of the process- and should be expected - it isn’t “failure”! #G2Great
Q5 providing solid models and allowing student choice in writing helps unlock writers' potential. I love to write, but if you asked me to write about cars or space, my writing would not shine 🌟 #g2great
Q5: Read. Read. Read. Make time for read aloud for the pure enjoyment of it. Allow students to savor the words and fall in love with reading. The more you read, the greater the writer. #G2Great#KellerLiteracy
A5 I want my students to know that TRYING is what is important to me. Not trying will get you no where but giving something a shot will lead to new discoveries. #g2great
A5: Help Ss love reading first. They'll fall in love with a sentence, paragraph, or author, as we all have. Then help them emulate the sentences and phrases they fall in love with. #G2Great
A4 many times Ss will overgeneralize a new pattern that they have learned (all of a sudden every word ends ‘s 🤦🏼♀️) I like to use my conference time to help guide them to when they use a particular pattern/convention and when not to. #g2great
A5 Ss need constant exposure to authors who follow the rules and break the rules, in sentences long and short, complex and simple, and everything in between. #readlikeawriter and #steallikeanartist#g2great
A5 I want my students to know that TRYING is what is important to me. Not trying will get you no where but giving something a shot will lead to new discoveries. #g2great
A5: it’s all the good stuff. Ss are NOT confident that they have anything meaningful to say. We need to get to know our kids as people, connect their passions to their talents and guide them to have the courage to unleash this on the world #bowtieboys#G2Great
A5: Time, Choice, Access, Community. Give them time to discover writers who inspire them & choice/access to read wildly. Community to share & discuss & space to enjoy the language & what it means to them #g2great
A5: Keep a notebook of your favorite mentor sentences! When you find captivating language in a text, don’t let it go. Hold onto it. Visit the sentences when you need inspiration. #G2Great
A5: Read alouds have been a huge help for me this year. S are finding examples of what we are writing and trying it in their own writing! #kellerliteracy#G2Great
#G2great A5 When doing read aloud or shared text read, bring attention to authorś craft - name it - ask Ss if they can see themselves trying it out in their writing. Sometimes, I think we need to be explicit in inviting Ss to tinker, and maybe keep tinkering til it feels right.
A5 Ss need constant exposure to authors who follow the rules and break the rules, in sentences long and short, complex and simple, and everything in between. #readlikeawriter and #steallikeanartist#g2great

Writing. She just wants to read. (Which sounds pretty innocent, doesn't it?) We've already gotten her out of math homework at home; this is all she has. #G2Great
A3 It's like learning to paint by studying the pattern of van Gogh's brushstrokes or learning to paint by numbers. Are you learning rules or are you learning art? If you learn technique, you figure out how to make it your own. Rules make it someone else's. #g2great
I say this all the time. The mom of one of Ss told me that when her daughter reads to her, she always shows the page and says, "What do you notice?" #G2great
A5 passion, enthusiasm, conviction, print rich environments that showcase the value and commitment to the written word. A love of writing and what it can mean to others modeled daily #G2Great
A6: Use the mentor text you’re already using for reading and writing workshop to lift a word, sentence or paragraph and soak it in. #G2Great#KellerLiteracy
A5: 10 minutes? Can we waste 10 minutes? Hmm. Bathroom, walking to next class, worksheets, "bell ringers," etc. Would you rather unleash POWER? #g2great
I say this all the time. The mom of one of Ss told me that when her daughter reads to her, she always shows the page and says, "What do you notice?" #G2great
A5: Help ss see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Share Amy Krouse Rosenthal's work w/ them, from memoirs to picture books to ads. She so delighted in language & made us all see its infiite possibiltiies #g2great
A5 lots of mentor texts with exciting language, mechanics, and conventions to help illustrate new things. Ss need time to try these things in their own writing and see if it fits their style. I love when I see Ss revisit a text because they want to write like the author #G2Great
A6 I like to start WW with a short poem. This opening moment inspires writers. Ss may choose to write directly to the poem or let their mind be sparked in new directions. It is all about the invitation. #G2Great#TeachWriting
A6 After a reader's or writer's workshop, I always reflect on what patterns we missed, or were struggling with. The next day, an invitation is given to them to notice these patterns in authentic texts, and then explored. #G2Great
A6 Build it into the routine of everyday reading. One of the things we do is look for interesting writing, and use that to start to "play" with language. No stakes, notebook time. #g2great
A6 Having students be detectives and discuss patterns as the lead learners is a powerful process. Use that time build their autonomy and passion for expression. We need to make our learning about the students...always. #g2great
A6 Be intentional with your planning, think about what your students need right now, what will connect to something they are reading or writing already? #g2great
A6: I’m all for anything driven by Ss - the more the better. Until we have achieved a 50-50 partnership w/ them, Ed will never be 100% for THEM. It’s too institutional, too “that’s just the way it is” - lets design, plan, instruct, assess, & grade as a team #bowtieboys#G2Great
A6 Being positive helps too. "I love what you did...attempted... I love the risk you too... What else do you want to do? You can't say "I love it" enough. Especially the errors. #G2Great
If the are breaking the "rules" intentionally to make a reader feel or read the text a certain way. In my professional writing, I'll use "And" to begin a sentence when I really want to emphasize a point. #G2Great.
...personally, it makes me cringe a bit, but I know that it is "okay" and I know that I need to empower my writers to break the "rules." Right??? 😋 #Great2Great

A6: Discuss and let them explore the simplicity and complexity of language on their own. We have to trust the process, even if it is not clean and streamlined. #G2Great
We begin our SMWP meetings in a similar way. Opening moments provide us with inspiration and motivation to explore the written word. #G2Great#justwrite

#kellerliteracy#G2great A5: We can communicate the significance of every word
by valuing non-conventional products like songs, poetry, and interpretive dance.
A6: Honoring curiosity takes commitment to student thinking and relaxation of adult standards for correctness. Value approximation and growth toward long-term literacy goals. #G2Great

#g2great#KellerLiteracy A6 I think old routines often complicated that which was really simple, we treated conventions with such an air of seriousness that it became a meaningless chore of compliance. 10 min. To build on a Ss natural curiosity=timeless 💛
A6: Embed this 10 minutes into your Reading and Writing Workshop. Use your Mentor text to Notice and Name amazing sentences. Revisit the sentence regularly and recognize similar ones in different texts. Balance your Balanced Literacy wisely! #g2great
A6 Read writers like @kwamealexander who break the rules of how text is "supposed" to look on the page are one of the best places to start encouraging Ss to look for patterns with conventions, bc they matter so much more when the sentences aren't traditional. #g2great
A6: Discuss and let them explore the simplicity and complexity of language on their own. We have to trust the process, even if it is not clean and streamlined. #G2Great
A6 lots of discussion about the patterns that you are studying and how they elevate the text. We often discuss why the author chose those words and would other words be as powerful/moving #G2great

This conversation brings up thoughts on vocabulary in writing as well. How as teachers we push writers for "wow" words but can you imagine a book written in all "wow" words... #G2Great

A7: Writing is hard work and can be intimidating. Take away the pressure and allow students to collaborate in a risk-free manner. #G2Great#KellerLiteracy
A7: different Ss will have different talents. Merging will allow them to not only create better products and learn from one another, it will give them the real world skills of collaboration #bowtieboys#g2great
A7: Working with a friend is so much better than working alone. I worked with a colleague all day today and it was FABulous! Learning and sharing together. #g2great
Q7: It's collaborative learning and teaching. They might see a hole in their friend's work and when THEY comment on it, it becomes a much more personal learning process for them. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
I edit for an education organization. My fellow adults sometimes say, aren’t you not supposed to do that? Amazing how wedded we are to rules. #ACESchat#G2Great

A7 Anytime we can encourage and build on true collaboration we are empowering students. We need to trust in their knowledge and power and let them take the lead. If we never give them the opportunity, they will never improve. Give them autonomy, mastery, purpose. #g2great
Kind of like the episode of Friends when Joey writes the letter w/ a thesaurus. "They're warm-blooded people with oversize ventricular chambers." #g2great
This conversation brings up thoughts on vocabulary in writing as well. How as teachers we push writers for "wow" words but can you imagine a book written in all "wow" words... #G2Great
#A7 Working collaboratively helps break down the walls, especially in the revision process. Some of the best work I have seen was a result of peer coaching. #g2great
A7: Because talk occurs. Discussion builds ideas, builds understanding, enhances writing, causes more writing. Each day, students say how they are often inspired by the words of a group member. Collaborative efforts are powerful. #G2Great
A7: Lennon and McCartney...The Wright Brothers...teaching kids about the power of two goes a long way too. My kids start to notice collaboration in the real world and see its value in the classroom #G2Great
A7:Buddy writing is so much fun! Having someone to help complete a story helps with confidence! Integrating technology and using Google doc is a great way to collaborate writing! #kellerliteracy#G2Great

A7: a partner can bring another schema or lens to the examination of language - language is by definition collaborative. Partners can open doors to new ways of reading (and writing) language. #G2Great
#G2great A7 Just like we are doing now, when paired in partners or in a group setting, Ss get the added perspective of a peer(s) and can choose to embrace new ideas and feel empowered to do so - strength in numbers.
A7: I think collaboration adds such a great opportunity for conversation. Strong learning convincing partners of the "right" way to write haha #G2Great
A7: Working colloaboratively allows students to look at text with two pairs of eyes and think about creating text from two different perspectives. #g2great
A7 often when students verbalize with a partner, both grow from the collaboration: often verbalizing helps Ss to see where the revision begins #g2great
Start with the students; what are their language patterns? Teachers can watch, listen, and learn from the attempts of our young readers and writers. #g2great
Good point. You don’t want writing time to be like the episode of Friends where Joey uses the thesaurus tool on every word of a letter he’s drafting. There is such a thing as too many “wow” words… #G2Great
A7 this is where I love technology. Ss can collaborate on a shared document through comments. You can see how they are pushing each other to excel and take risks. They also learn by correcting each other’s mistakes #G2great
#G2great Need to eek out time for partner discussion during writing - I know it's a powerful exchange, but writing time itself is so sacred and limited as is in our schedule. Like idea of using Morning Meeting time - perhaps Activity - for some of these get-togethers.
A1: When we stop and gasp and admire, we develop the culture of literacy that inspires students to not only appreciate, but also want to create. #G2Great
I say this all the time. The mom of one of Ss told me that when her daughter reads to her, she always shows the page and says, "What do you notice?" #G2great
A7: Working collaboratively allows Ss to respect and value perspective. Writers push each other and tend to bring out the best in one another. #G2Great#motivation#inspiration
A7 #ELLs esp benefit from working in small groups/partnerships. This lowers the affective filter while students learn language and content simultaneously #g2great
A7: Working collaboratively allows Ss to respect and value perspective. Writers push each other and tend to bring out the best in one another. #G2Great#motivation#inspiration
A7: Working together gives students chances to articulate their thinking -- giving voice to thoughts helps you clarify and look at mentor texts from two perspectives. And it's fun. Don't you love sharing with someone when you see something in a text that's meaningful? #G2Great
OMG! I love this as a concept. Find me a sentence that makes me stop and gasp in your writing... I can't wait to say that to a student tomorrow! #g2great
Morning Meeting time can be a great venue. A common mantra of mine is that our Morning Meetings help us grow as kind people and strong learners. Discussions of craft fit into that. #G2Great
A7 Student writing partnerships are powerful as they talk about their writing or study a professional writer’s work or offer feedback. Love 10 min a day—consistency is key to growth and exploring craft.#g2great
A5 Ss need constant exposure to authors who follow the rules and break the rules, in sentences long and short, complex and simple, and everything in between. #readlikeawriter and #steallikeanartist#g2great
A7 The biggest benefit to pairing is the process of being confronted with the insight that, we all can share ideas, and we can also have completely different ideas. Anything that makes students aware of the world around them is a great thing. #g2great
Thank you everyone for all of your great thinking tonight. Always feel so refreshed whenever I get to chat best practice for our amazing kiddos with passionate and talented educators who rock it out every day! #bowtieboys#G2Great
A8 Grammar should be fun. Without using worksheets, let's embrace writing with students and teach grammar with fun in mind. Using authentic texts and writing, show them the importance of proper language and how to use freedom with it as well. Empower their autonomy. #g2great
A8: I think that it is imperative that we are able to incorporate learning that students are interested in while still teaching the “standards” such as grammar #BowTieBoys#G2great
Q8: Isn’t our goal as educators to grow students to their fullest potential. Meaning-making, critical thinking, analyzing, making decisions is what students face in the real world, so why not in our classrooms too? #G2Great#KellerLiteracy
Looks like a wonderful chat! So bummed I wasn't home in time for the #PatternsOfPower#G2Great chat. My copy is now being passed around my school! Teachers are truly digging it!
I’m befuddled often lately by the use of the term, “failure”. I think it’s only “failure” if everyone stops trying. Not being successful at the onset or along the way is part of the process- and should be expected - it isn’t “failure”! #G2Great
A8: Our messages and meaning are more powerful when we harness grammar to our advantage. Grammar is the glue that holds the words of our language together. #G2Great
THANK YOU @writeguyjeff@whitney_larocca and my co-hosts at the BEST chat on Twitter! Love you all! Good night! (I need sleep; I have primary children tomorrow. LOL) #g2great
A8: I’m struck by the word “joy”. When we are joyous about anything, it is naturally infused into our lives. Students’ writing will breathe with gorgeous sentences if we help them discover the joy of grammar. #G2Great
Looks like a wonderful chat! So bummed I wasn't home in time for the #PatternsOfPower#G2Great chat. My copy is now being passed around my school! Teachers are truly digging it!
What a wonderful way to spend a Thursday evening! I can't wait to go and teach my literacy workshop lesson tomorrow. Special thanks to @writeguyjeff and @whitney_larocca. They continue to inspire me to make #patternsofpower meaningful for my learners #thanku#g2great
A8 Grammar gets such a bad rep as the stodgy old lady of curriculums. We have to show our Ss that the old lady can still shake it like a Polaroid picture. I love grammar, and excitement is contagious! #g2great#grammarnerd

A8: I was the best sentence diagrammer when we used Warriner's.
Funny that I conjugate verbs in French to make sure my SV agreement is correct.
Love this book!
@writeguyjeff@whitney_larocca@stenhousepub#G2great
A8: Writers love writing workshop because they have choice in what they write. Bringing in #PatternsofPower gives them choice in the decisions they make with conventions. What’s more fun than that? #G2great
Like always the #G2Great chat makes my Thursday complete but I have 100 pushups to do. Thanks all who helped make me a better teacher tonight. @DrMaryHoward@franmcveigh@hayhurst3@brennanamy and everyone else. I missed this very much.
A8 Grammar is a tool for clarity. It has changed overtime, and it will continue to change in subtle ways. If we teach grammar as an extension of the students' right to empower their own voice, we've got'em. #g2great
A4. Empowering and positive. As athletes and writers, students set and reflect on personal goals. Rereading our thoughts and reflecting all about ourselves. Yes! #g2great#kellerliteracy
A7: Adjectives do not make a sentence complex; syntactical complexity grows from connected thoughts, phrases, patterns that tell who, where and when something happened. Prepositions are the building blocks of phrases in complex sentences. #G2great
I am a Ss and I want to ask you how you can incorporate fun lessons on grammar while still being able to teach the lesson, what are your ideas? #G2great#BowTieBoys
