Hi everyone! Laura, , Anchorage, facilitator tonight. 1hr=too short. Hope=1 take away for each person.
-
-
Nathan, special education, Juneau. I'd like to celebrate the power of collaboration in education.
-
my edu-celebration=creating list of possible team norms for internal dept. meetings.
-
AmyJo Meiners, elem tchr, Juneau. Celebrating my start of MSED program tonight.
-
3rd grade teacher in Fort Yukon. (Internet is acting up a bit so may be quiet) excited that my online classes at UAF started today
-
I've been in meetings where that is a huge achievement.
-
Woohoo-yes-we have to model the model, right? So hard!
-
-
Welcome everyone, Q1 is coming!
-
(Getting back into Twitter chat routine! ) https://t.co/ggyZpfW6MG
-
-
Tammy, Director of Teaching & Learning / Interim Supt, Copper River School District. Celebrating after a great first week!
-
Collaboration makes teaching so much richer!
-
especially when that means no side conversations, or passing catty notes and arriving on time.
-
Again, our topic=Personalized Learning. If you are on Participate Learning, we are on=Saved transcript and resources there.
-
-
-
Tom McKenna, principal, Juneau. I'd like to celebrate that we got the ship off the dock! School started. Lots of collaboration!
-
Curriculum Instruction Assessment
-
A1: Is personalized learning the act of making personal connections in content to students lives?
-
, for sure, that is part of it! PL contains many elements.
-
I was certified in WA so I'm doing my alaska studies (Alaskan geography) & multicultural studies (AK Native) courses.
-
For the purposes of defining, I will share two ways to look at it.
-
A1 I'm finding the term Personalized Learning used in politics sometimes to mean privatization. Audience interpretation is key.
-
A1. I do think defs can vary... from what says, to completely individualized, often computer based learning.
-
A1 PL in means providing Ss with content specific to indiv for at least part of school day. Large grp+Sm Grp+indiv content
-
Really? People feel personalized learning occurs when learning is privatized?
-
YES, many variations, and some aren't accurate.
-
-
-
I thought Differentiation is meeting at their skill level while Personalized is meeting at their interest level.
-
Driven by the interest of the learner
-
Just defining it is a beast! It contains differentiation, individualization, pacing, student ownership, interests, etc.
-
-
Ts definitions of illustrate how convoluted this particular term is in !
-
- the last class that I took focused on CAI
-
-
A1 , Do you think Writing Workshop a la Nancie Attwell, would be considered PL?
-
A1: personalized learning is choice with guidance
-
-
-
So it's something that goes beyond just differentiation or Individualization... Not something in addition to those things.
-
It's at the bottom, but it's Bray and McClaskey
-
Yep, absolutely. at its best.
-
What is the image/content source? Did you write this?
-
-
Yes, NA is a great resource example of how to incorporate many of its aspects.
-
OK, keep those definitions swimming in your brains. Could spend just an hr. on that. Here comes Q2.
-
Couldn't we also phrase DI n IL in terms of Ss and PL in terms of Ts?
-
-
-
A2: it's a good opportunity to get to know students better AND keep them more engaged
-
A2: I'm actually working on a dissertation on PL for teacher PD...
-
A2: it seems that PL contains many design elements relevant to student learning gains such as motivation and interest.
-
seems to me PL is a more student driven approach with their ownership whereas DI and IL are teacher driven
-
Chart uses Learner lang in first colum and T lang in other 2. Seems like T lang n S lang could be used all 3.
-
A2: How can we NOT? Ss come to school to lrn. If we don't personalize, we're not giving Ss what they need. https://t.co/J7TFcqbCF2
-
Yes, I feel like the key shift is moving from T-Driven to S-Driven.
-
Engagement definitely goes up.
-
A2 We live in global economy, info at fingertips, PL helps cult. entrepreneurial spirit. Bldg on strengths-> ideas to action.
-
Yes, that is true. I've seen some with role comparisons too where the L is mixed.
-
-
Giving students ownership of their learning makes them lifelong learners because they are self motivated
-
-
Remembering when DI first came out it was to focus on Ss learning needs, not Ts. Wonder if I can dredge that old chart?
-
Shout out to who's out there lurking! Join conversation! Your expertise is welcome!
-
Ha, yes!!! Seems like the definitions spiral.
-
-
A3: How do you engage students who are already "checked out" of school? (Seniors)
-
A3. Is it possible to effectively scaffold PL when teaching from time-driven curriculum materials w. tight pacing guides, etc. ?
-
A3: How do elementary teachers do it? I can't think of a time when my son has had PL in elem, just DI and IL
-
A3 How can PL occur in districts requiring adherence to ELA n MA curriculum programs?
-
Our role as Ts has changed. We are no longer the lone holder of information, its in Ss fingertips. We must help them leverage it.
-
It's a system so it will take time. Most consider changing the culture first, before moving into content https://t.co/Y0EI7toiqk
-
I'm wondering if author bias exists in the lang used to create that chart, these are all S centered practices
-
-
I would argue that YES, it is. model w/ focus is key. https://t.co/F5SgE5EkuU
-
-
A3. Is it possible to effectively scaffold PL when teaching from time-driven curriculum materials w. tight pacing guides, etc. ?
-
Ask them what they would rather be doing and then sneak learning in by asking questions/making connections
-
WOW-awesome ?s! I will post and share a platform for these!
-
-

-
Our role as Ts has changed. We are no longer the lone holder of information, its in Ss fingertips. We must help them leverage it.
-
My answer would be no if freedom in pacing is part of the tenants of personalized learning
-
That be another good discussion to have. It's one way to look at the terms, but there are many out there.
-
by inspiring Ss to ask questions and dig deeper into the content.
-
Also what happens to high transient population?
-
Stay tuned for where to see all of those ?s-I'll share platform after the chat because it's complex topic.
-
I'm glad you're here to make this argument. Much to learn from you, always!
-
And changing school/district culture is far more challenging than changing individual Ts practice. https://t.co/s1gSE4ZkM9

-
Maybe try small steps such as choice boards https://t.co/hsdot6abxQ
-
-
A3: How do you engage students who are already "checked out" of school? (Seniors)
-
A4: teacher is primarily a sounding board while students learn to plan and pace
-
if curriculum is that tightly paced that you can't challenge Ss with PL then challenge said curriculum
-
Right back at ya, . https://t.co/Tmege0yhlR
-
-
I'm glad you're here to make this argument. Much to learn from you, always!
-
Can't start a PL system with seniors, but you can do small pieces of it. https://t.co/kOoyzvs2Sb

A3: How do you engage students who are already "checked out" of school? (Seniors)
-
I give the students a choice to do a project with a prompt I put up or figure out an alternative https://t.co/FrcrhDtVEr
-
I'm trying a full course "Choose your own adventure" and smaller scale choose your own project as 2 options for sr class
-
A4. Ideally, teacher is orchestrator, ally, learning coach. St is self-motivated to seek guidance.
-
-
Here comes Q5-sorry I have to go so fast!
-
-
Q4: Ss must self-monitor and self-motivate. Ts must be OK w/ not having all the answers. Bye, . https://t.co/Z2ivE0riV9
-
And sometimes the 2 become partners and learn together
-
GREAT idea, ! They'll love it! https://t.co/pPrEh9BknW

-
A5: Have conversations with students and let your imagination kick in. Then look at examples that support imagination
-
-
Start by setting some time for it and slowly add more elements of PL in areas that you aren't currently using it
-
A5. It's ok to mess it up, talk it out, and try again. Find what works and use it save what didn't for later, and be flexible
-
YES!!! Experimentation is HUGE! https://t.co/VoRUNxf0tG
-
-
A5. It's ok to mess it up, talk it out, and try again. Find what works and use it save what didn't for later, and be flexible
-
A5 Must begin w Student discussion/interests/goals.
-
-
A5 A baby step we're taking is to focus on st goal-setting. More globally... inventory strengths, track & support mult projects
-
Consider how educators build ownership of learning. This can happen in small steps/ways.
-
1st day of school tomorrow:I'm asking the students what they want to learn in science this year & will build curriculum around it
-
This should be impactful-combo of learner profiles with goal setting-nice! https://t.co/FAXjui7LEA
-
-
A5 A baby step we're taking is to focus on st goal-setting. More globally... inventory strengths, track & support mult projects
-
A5 Part 2 Ss always get excited about what Ts are excited about win a few Ss each day the rest will follow. They have no choice.
-
Thank you to all for sharing wonderings and practices! Here comes Q6!
-
-
Awesome, but don't forget non-negotiables! What MUST Ss learn at a certain grade? That's important, too. https://t.co/RcIJDeqemL
-
-
1st day of school tomorrow:I'm asking the students what they want to learn in science this year & will build curriculum around it
-
I love science because it's where language arts and math intersect! We will learn graphs, fractions, & report writing
-
-
Make Learning Personal-Bray/McClaskey, School Culture Rewired for shift in collegiality, to name a couple
-
A6 May not be square on PL, but I've been focusing on Ron Berger and Expeditionary Learning.
-
YES! :) https://t.co/8qU9Ol1zJZ

-
A6: Also, Learning to Choose, Choosing to Learn, Anderson's latest is helpful
-
-
-
I had a momentary lapse of reason a few years ago and wanted to open one of their schools in Anchorage
-
Currently mining _Leaders of Their Own Learning_

A6 School Improvement Network Derris Moore Anne Brown presented for AKDeed @ ldrship conf in April
-
A LOT out there, but it's not all worth our time. PL=system so you have to dig around for the pieces in the good resources.
-
Looking forward to learning about your diss work
-
-
OK, final question is coming. Tomorrow, I'll be sharing a platform to post unanswered ?s, resources, to continue the discussion!
-
-
A6 has good PL n Blended Learning info too.
-
A7: So many definitions of . Conversations must start with common ground...which lead to more conversations!
-
Q7 2 things: Student Focus First Always, and Baby Steps.
-
A7. Colleagues out here striving to create space and system for PL.
-
A6 Eplore more the link between PL and blended learning.
-
-
Yes, it's a fun exit slip-tends to be very impactful for both learner and teacher
-
A7 You all teach me how to moderate Twitter chats. Thank you.
