Q1: September 11, 2001 was a day that started like any other. However, at 8:46.40 a.m., that all changed when an aircraft flew into the north tower (1 WTC). Where were you and how did you find out? #wearewayne
A1 I was teaching preschoolers.... Found out from parents dropping off their students. Couldn't watch news until lunchtime. Difficult to keep students occupied while I wondered what was happening. #wearewayne
Q1: I was leaving for breakfast with my friends. We had a late start because of the ISTEP schedule. My dad told me—I didn’t understand the magnitude of the situation until later at school. #wearewayne
A1: I was driving down I65 to Indianapolis from Lafayette for the Indiana Principal Leadership Academy. The radio broadcasters were joking about a small personal plane that crashed into the World Trace Center. #wearewayne
A1: In my classroom @ Avon HS as a 2nd yr tchr, with a room full of kiddos who didn't have to take ISTEP. Tchr next door came in screaming for me to turn on TV. Turned it on just as 2nd plane hit. #wearewayne

A1: I was in my car on my way to class listening to NPR and thought they were talking about a movie until the announcer started yelling, "The Pentagon has been hit!" #wearewayne

A1: I was a junior in HS. We had a sub in my lit class and another teacher came in to tell him to turn on the television. He turned it on just before the second plane hit. We all just watched in complete horror! #wearewayne
A1: I was sitting in English class 7th grade at what was once Fulton Junior High (now CHC)... teachers were crying, parents were coming to pick up their kids... there was a feeling of panic and chaos #wearewayne
Q2: 9:03 a.m. Flight 175 crashes into the south face of the South Tower (2 WTC) of the World Trade Center. Parts of the plane, leave the building from its east and north sides, falling to the ground six blocks away. Did anything change for you? #wearewayne
A1: I was a freshman at Indiana State, in biology class. Our professor shared with us the news and the silence in that room was filled with such sadness, emotion, and concern. #Wearewayne
My husband, who is a pilot, was a flight instructor in the air teaching a young pilot to fly. He said that day drastically changed his entire profession. #wearewayne
A1: I woke up to the news after flying home from my honeymoon the night before. My husband was a newly commissioned naval officer, and we had no idea what it would mean for our future and the future of our military friends. #wearewayne

A1. I was at work when a co-worker with family in New York told us. I remember initially thinking it was a plane crash, not anything bigger. #wearewayne
A2 I was in shock when we realized this was intentional. I pulled up https://t.co/ng7yAKJI1m and watched as all of the commercial flights across the US began to disappear as they landed, until there was nothing. Never imagined what we were seeing. #wearewayne
A1: I was on hall duty at Door #2 at @BenDavisHS during ISTEP+ Testing. Former @BenDavisChoirs Secretary Marcia Leis came by and told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. #WeAreWayne

@WayneTwpSuper, @BenDavisHS, @BenDavisChoirs
A2 Everything changed for me.... first thoughts were of my daughters at school and whether or not they were safe. Next thought was about our country. Would it be the same. Didn't sleep for days. #wearewayne
A2: I do remember having an overwhelming need to talk to my parents and my brother. I wasn't married, nor did I have kids of my own. But at that moment, I NEEDED to hear their voices. #wearewayne

A2: Those radio announcers soon changed their toon. It wasn't funny anymore. The leaders of IPLA cancelled the rest of the day and told us all to return to our buidlings. #wearewayne
Q2: At this point I feel the magnitude of this tragedy was setting in and people were beginning to panic. Being away from home at college, my family was calling, etc. I began to see the chaos, the panic, and fear set in. #Wearewayne
Yes! Oh, yes! I don’t think I can adequately describe the changes in just words, but I know that I had friends who were recent graduates of @BenDavisHS going off to war. #wearewayne

A1: I was a freshman at Purdue University. My first class that morning was a minority leadership class. I found out about 9/11 from the professor of that class. #WeAreWayne
Q3: Ar 9:37 a.m., Flight 77 crashes into the western side of The Pentagon and starts a violent fire. What were the conversations you were having with students, friends, or family? #wearewayne
A2, I was watching the television broadcast in the principal’s office during your prep time when the second plane hit making it obvious that this was NOT an accident. @BPEKnights#wearewayne
A2. Yep- that’s when it hit us that it wasn’t just an unfortunate accident. We had a tv in the employee lounge and many of us gathered there to try to figure out what was happening. My co-worker was trying to track down her family members who worked in Manhattan. #wearewayne
A2: Actually still on hall duty when this happened. I saw a crowd of teachers around the @BenDavisHS Bookstore, so I went down and joined them. Found out about the second plane there, and I decided I should return to @WBDGIndy to monitor the EAS if it was activated. #WeAreWayne

@WayneTwpSuper, @BenDavisHS, @WBDGIndy
A2: Watching a plane hit a building and knowing the lives lost immediately was devastating. I remember watching the adults coming in and out of the room with pure fear on their faces. America was under attack and people were starting to realize this. #wearewayne
A2 My father-in-law had just passed away a week or two before, unexpectedly. He was a Vietnam vet. While we missed him dearly, I thought about the horror he was spared. We flew into Boston shortly after the attacks for a 40 day wake for him. The security was unreal. #wearewayne

Q3: Ar 9:37 a.m., Flight 77 crashes into the western side of The Pentagon and starts a violent fire. What were the conversations you were having with students, friends, or family? #wearewayne
A1: I was a freshman in high school. We were in the gym for an assembly. They interrupted the assembly and dismissed us to homerooms where we watched it unfold live on small TVs in the corner of the classrooms. #wearewayne
A3: My family was on the phone, roommates were in tears, professors had cancelled class, and for the first time as an adult I realized, really realized, what terrorism was. Everyone was expressing worry, concern, all kinds of emotions. #wearewayne
A3: When the third plane hit the pentagon...I knew we were under attack. By now, I was glued to the TV and was so confused. We kept the TV's off in our classrooms until we could figure out what was happening. #wearewayne
A2 (Cont'd): So, I went to Student Services and got a replacement for my door duty. I ran into @DavidMarcotte1 on the way back. Neither of us could believe it. When I got back in studio, the South Tower had just collapsed when I got the TV on. I was stunned. #WeAreWayne
In reply to
@WayneTwpSuper, @BenDavisHS, @WBDGIndy, @DavidMarcotte1
A3: I immediately called my parents and was very relieved when my dad answered. He works in DC. His secretary's husband worked at Pentagon so we were even more on edge. #wearewayne
Q3: Ar 9:37 a.m., Flight 77 crashes into the western side of The Pentagon and starts a violent fire. What were the conversations you were having with students, friends, or family? #wearewayne
A3: the conversation was, “Who’s next, where is the next attack going to take place, who is doing this, when will it stop, what can we do to help?!” #wearewayne
Q4: Ar 10:03: Flight 93 is crashed by its hijackers 80 miles (129 km) southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Flight 93's target was either the United States Capitol building or the White House. What was your thought process? #wearewayne
Q3, We just couldn’t believe it was real. I didn’t talk to my third graders about it, but parents began showing up to take their children home. #wearewayne@BPEKnights
A3: One of my Ss had a mother who was supposed to be in NYC that morning. We didn't know it, but she had missed her flight and was still in Indy. I spent the next 3 hrs trying to keep her calm. #wearewayne
Q3: Ar 9:37 a.m., Flight 77 crashes into the western side of The Pentagon and starts a violent fire. What were the conversations you were having with students, friends, or family? #wearewayne
A3 Students were too young to tell. I had to put on my best face but tried to keep them busy so they wouldn't see how worried I was at that time. Coworkers and I glued to the television on breaks. Disbelief was the most common theme. #wearewayne
A3: Was teaching first grade, trying to stay calm, and not let on to my students. Had a wonderful student teacher with me and we supported each other. I remember calling my own mother in her classroom.
#wearewayne
A3 We watched as families in NY desperately searched for missing loved ones, holding and posting pictures and searching and searching. That tore my heart out. We talked of that and how this attack might change life as we knew it. #wearewayne
A3: I was trying to talk through the tragedy on-air to our @WBDGIndy listeners and decided I was doing a bad job, so we joined the @AP coverage of the event. My students started arriving at the lunch periods due to testing (Jr's and Sr's had been home all morning. #WeAreWayne
A3. I felt overwhelming anxiety and fear. I was at my previous job so no students, but we were all trying to figure out how to continue through the day. Should we go home or stay at work? Trying to connect with loved ones. #wearewayne
A3: Panic had set in and friends were all trying to decide if they should leave for the day. I remember everyone hugging/crying/waiting for the next attack...staring at the TVs. The media was very clear no one knew how many planes had been hijacked. #terrifying#wearewayne
Q4: Everyone at this point is glued to the tv watching horror happen, wondering where would be the next attack. It was pure panic and fear. #wearewayne
Q4: Ar 10:03: Flight 93 is crashed by its hijackers 80 miles (129 km) southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Flight 93's target was either the United States Capitol building or the White House. What was your thought process? #wearewayne
A3 (cont'd) We watched together. One of my students had a grandmother that worked in the Pentagon, and he was trying frantically to reach her. She turned out to be fine b/c she was not in the affected area of the building. #WeAreWayne
Q5: The South Tower collapsed at 9:58 and rhe North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses 30 minutes later. What were the conversations you had with students, colleagues, etc? #wearewayne
A4 Kept wondering what next. How many more planes? Were they going to go for more cities. I kept thinking about the tall buildings in downtown Indy. #wearewayne
A2: I was just trying to comprehend what was happening. I didn’t have a cell phone to communicate with loved ones. Technology was so different 17 years ago. #wearewayne
A4: We were so confused. By now we had TV's on in the classrooms and were watching the horror in three locations now. We wondered how many more planes had been hijacked. What's next. I remember seeing images of President Bush being interrupted during his school visit.#wearewayne
A4: I just remember the news was arriving all at once. Lots of unconfirmed reports and I was trying to help the students pick through the information. #WeAreWayne
A4: true fear and panic set in wondering how many more attacks there would be ... I began to feel for those on the planes & their loved ones #wearewayne
Q1: September 11, 2001 was a day that started like any other. However, at 8:46.40 a.m., that all changed when an aircraft flew into the north tower (1 WTC). Where were you and how did you find out? #wearewayne
A1: I was dropping Caroline off at daycare and headed to my office on monument circle. I realized it would be better for me to go to CGE. I was a PTO mom that day- a volunteer to help sign out students. I stayed all day. No place I would rather be. #wearewayne
A4. That the US was facing war on our own land for the first time in my lifetime. Just holding my breath waiting to see who would be attacked next. #wearewayne
A5: I was on the air live when the North Tower came down. It's the kind of play-by-play I never want to have to do again. It was one of the most shocking sites I hope I'll ever see. #WeAreWayne
A5 Students were asking if Air Force fighter jets would shoot down any other airliners that might be headed for another target. We imagined how difficult that decision would be, if a pilot were confronted with it. The thought terrified us. #wearewayne
A2: I was in disbelief. My professor at Purdue dismissed class early. As I walked back to my dorm, I saw so many students crying. I decided I would call my parents when I got back to my room. #WeAreWayne
A5: Being away at college everyone was beginning to decide if they should go home, stay, parents coming to the campus, etc. Everyone was so scared and worried that you just wanted to be near your loved ones. #wearewayne
Q5: The South Tower collapsed at 9:58 and rhe North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses 30 minutes later. What were the conversations you had with students, colleagues, etc? #wearewayne
A3: At this point, they were trying to evacuate us from the school building, but my dad ended up picking me up and taking me home. I was so scared but relieved to see his face and to be at home with family. #wearewayne
A5 I just remember crying and watching in disbelief. Kept thinking about all those who were still in the building. Just waited for the other building to fall. #wearewayne
A5: I remember leaving right after school to get home from school. I stopped to get gas in a long line of cars. Gas had jumped to nearly $4.00 a gallon. Fear had taken over. I remember trying to console my own children who were young. #wearewayne
A5: The horror of seeing those towers collapse and knowing how many people were never able to escape was horrific. I can not really explain the feelings I experienced watching that happen. #wearewayne
The @CWECHAMP A.P. was military veteran Tim Harshbarger. I will always remember his perspective and thoughtful comments as we tried to process the day’s events. #wearewayne
Q5: The South Tower collapsed at 9:58 and rhe North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses 30 minutes later. What were the conversations you had with students, colleagues, etc? #wearewayne
A4: What is going to happen next? We aren’t safe... where do we go? How many planes are involved? I remember thinking that they were going to bomb us! There had to be bombs involved. #wearewayne
A2: As with most of us who were in schools, most of the teaching and instruction stopped for the day. Instead we were all glued to the tv watching the live coverage. #wearewayne
Q2: 9:03 a.m. Flight 175 crashes into the south face of the South Tower (2 WTC) of the World Trade Center. Parts of the plane, leave the building from its east and north sides, falling to the ground six blocks away. Did anything change for you? #wearewayne
A2 We were able to watch TV all day at school and just wondering why is this happening and even though we are the United States we are not untouchable. #wearewayne
Q5: The South Tower collapsed at 9:58 and rhe North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses 30 minutes later. What were the conversations you had with students, colleagues, etc? #wearewayne
A5. Shock and disbelief. Everyone was going through who they knew that could have been connected to NYC and DC. Started to worry about friends in Chicago as we didn’t know if that would also be a target. #wearewayne
Q6: As much as September 11, 2001 has impacted our lives, many of our students were not born. What did you do today in #wearewayne to help them understand the events we experienced and honor those who lost their lives in this terrorist attack?
A6 A family was out on Rockville Road this evening handing out American flags. People were honking and waving them. That's the first chance on a busy day that I had to reflect. #wearewayne. My kids got a flag and waved it out the window and asked about 9/11.
A5: All of those people GONE! Those poor innocent Americans gone. Seeing all of the coverage of the people jumping... running for their life. I will never be the same. I remember thinking how could this happen to us? We are the darn United States of America! #wearewayne
A3: Once I got back to my dorm room, I turned on the news. It was heartbreaking to watch. I wondered if more attacks would happen. I called my parents and talked to them about how I was feeling. #WeAreWayne
A6 Tried to focus on the good that came out of it. We talked a lot about the Survivor tree and how the saplings from it were helping others. https://t.co/upkuBZoJNF#wearewayne
A6: We watched CNN10 and I had Ss in each block that went to NYC with me last May, they talked to their peers about their experience at the memorial and museum. I had taught a unit on this when they were in 7th grade. #wearewayne
Q6: As much as September 11, 2001 has impacted our lives, many of our students were not born. What did you do today in #wearewayne to help them understand the events we experienced and honor those who lost their lives in this terrorist attack?
A6:As a KDG teacher it’s hard to explain in a way that is developmentally appropriate. We focus on Patriots day and how we love our country and want to take care of our country. We discuss that people hurt our country and families were very sad and today we honor them #wearewayne
A5, The conversation I remember the most was with my 9 year old daughter. We were watching the news during dinner that night. She asked if there were people in the airplane. When I answered, she began crying and begged me to turn off the tv. #wearewayne@BPEKnights
A6: One of my @A31CareerCenter students was happy @BenDavisHS recognized 9/11 with a moment of silence. We talked about the experiences. For them, it's like the Kennedy assassination was to me. We have to tell the story to help #Remember911. #WeAreWayne
In reply to
@WayneTwpSuper, @A31CareerCenter, @BenDavisHS
A6. Being available to talk openly with the students who had questions. Some seem very connected to the events and want to know personal stories. Discuss what life was like before 9/11. #wearewayne
A5.2 I remember the absolute silence around the airport. No engine noise, planes in air. Nothing on 9/11/01. Probably first time in my life I can remember anything remotely like that having grown up on West 10th St. #WeAreWayne
A6: I answered questions from a 4th grader who was very inquisitive about that day. Participated in a silent dismissal. I was more purposeful in our moment of silence today. #wearewayne
John, I remember going to the US Grand Prix a few weeks later and seeing F-15 Eagle fighter jets cruising over us, fully armed. I'd never seen a fully armed fighter in person before. That was another sobering moment. #wearewayne
A4: After talking to my parents, I decided to watch the news again. It was just too much to watch. I turned off the TV and prayed because I did not know what else to do. #WeAreWayne
Q2: All I could feel was empathy for the families who would face a lifetime of sorrow. How would they tell their kids? How do I tell my kids? How will these families put themselves back together? How do I shield my kids from pain? So many questions without answers. #wearewayne
WOW...that was a quick 30 minutes. Thank you for the amazing stories you have shared on how we assisted our post 2001 students understand the impact that 9?11/01 had on us all. Have an awesome evening #wearewayne!!
