Mathew Bennett OL/Run Game Coordinator at Woodmont high school in Greenville South Carolina. Was very happy to get back to work today with my guys!!!! #hogfbchat
A1: OL wise I don’t have the resources to film everything I’d like to film. I’m a big believer in examples and showing guys what I want it to look like so we will watch clips of plays run the right way for sure. #hogfbchat
A1 - I try to film as much as possible. I haven’t forced my kids to watch a lot of film, but I’m going to change that this season. They will grade themselves and then we will go over it on Sundays! If anyone has a helpful idea please pass it my way #hogfbchat
A1: would love to film everything but we don’t film much during the summer. We filmed everything during the spring. Will film again in the fall, it’s a matter of having kids to film during the summer. Our film people get to have summer vacation #hogfbchat
A1: will film team and/or inside run every day with phone and cut up with notes and share on Hudl. Once season and school starts, gets tougher to do. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat as much as possible. Fortunate to have film of all our camp work thus far and should have the same next week. Players are expected to watch each night, with finding Easter Eggs & clarification part of practice the next day.
When we switch over to official practice I am gonna try to set something up to where we can film our plays being run and make corrections as we go #hogfbchat
A1: As a player I would highly recommend filming as much as possible.
Line is about moves that are habits, its hard to know you have a bad one without watching it. #hogfbchat
I have made install cutups of plays like power, IZ, etc of college teams and shared on hudl for the kids to watch before we installed this summer #HogFBChat
#hogfbchat
A1)
None. I know this isn't popular but we rarely get out of Indy and group during this time of year. I think team does nothing until we have some real skill at the fundamentals we are teaching. It's so slow, talked about, and one on one...or two on one. No need.
#hogfbchat A1 I want as much film as we can get. There are a million different things on several different kids that need feedback. W/ Google Classroom, texting, social media, Etc there are a lots of ways to get suggestions relayed to the kids if you can't chat w them
A1: The tricky part of the question is “how much time” will people watch it. You can film it. It can be quite valuable. How many are actually utilizing that film, thus, what is the value? #hogfbchat
A1. Truthfully I don’t feel that I have filmed enough this summer. I need to do a better job here. Beginning August 6th we will film every offensive/defensive team session plus inside/outside run sessions. We will watch it before practice throughout the week. #HogFbChat
A1 cont. it will also be on Hudl, and we encourage kids to watch throughout the week on their own as well. I know I can see who is watching, but I ask a question or two to get an indication who is doing it right. #HogFbChat
I've tried "encouraged" in the past and always felt that it came up short. This season, once we get into 2-a-days, there will be a mandatory expectation each day, questions/review the following day, and extra duty if expectations aren't met. HINT HINT HINT #hogfbchat
A1: We have done it more with the skill guys with 7 on 7 than with the OL this summer. If there is some OL/DL action (1 on 1s), it gets filmed and uploaded to Hudl. OL really spends a lot of time on core schemes with the RBs. #hogfbchat
I’ve had players grade their POSITION from game film. Good stuff, bad stuff, etc. Not just what YOU did, but learning from any example. (Did not do it with practice film, however...) #Hogfbchat
#hogfbchat to me there is value in film even in no pad situations. You can judge speed, urgency off the ball, their footwork, where their eyes are pre and post snap.
A2: this May be an unpopular option but if we are filming I’ll jump in. Other than that we can do half line stuff. Or we throw in skinny dudes. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat in the past my guys have done a solid job of filling in. Sometimes without prompting ~ they just get it. More miles on tires you would like to keep fresh, but additional opportunities to develop their craft against better competition too.
A2: I will never disparage my skill position brethren but I get sick of going up against the 180 pound cornerback. Half line might be better unfortunately #hogfbchat
A2-My experience in the past, this has been tough. At the lower levels I would use backup LB/DL/TE when needed or go half line & 1 direction #hogfbchat
A2- We go 1/2 line. Especially at a small school, it’s been beneficial for us because then we get good on good. Reduces injury risk while getting good quality reps. #hogfbchat
A2: Good and bad. More reps, more risk of getting injured. I run our Scout O during D periods, so I always try and put in the ‘best of the rest’ but will give as much as of a break as I can to the starters while still challenging our #1 D. #hogfbchat
A2: In Past have used half-line to help with that or bring better JV linemen up to practice. Also have done team “on air” with others holding bags on defense. Luckily haven’t had that problem in new School. #hogfbchat
A2. Finally have a full OL group to have a first and second team and some extra subs. At my old school I had 8 O-linemen. One was an extra interior guy. One was extra tackle, and one learned all 5 spots. It was tough. #HogFbChat
A2: It is all about the OL coach’s attitude. Gotta be an energy guy, who can rally the troops. I’d say the answer to your question, @CoachShiffman , is more about demeanor and expectations than some kind of “master plan.” #hogfbchat
A1. Currently no filming during summer. Definitely would like to get tape of experienced players showing technique/drills for incoming athletes in the future. #Hogfbchat
Q2: That sir is a fantastic question. My answer is I plug as many guys that fit in as possible and try to get them squared away. I’ll use a fat RB at guard if need be. I supplement with back up DL’s and such. It ain’t pretty but it gets the job done somewhat. #hogfbchat
A2: I will say that half line can get crazy competitive which is really enjoyable. It's like the highschool version of wrestling your brothers. #hogfbchat
A2: Half line. This way we can maximize reps and get rest. Allows for constant movement. Had to do this at a previous school out of necessity and now will do it forever. #hogfbchat
A2: Work half line drills, only need 3 on OL and 3 on the bad side. Helps with low numbers at summer installs when kids have other sports, drivers ed, work, etc. #HogFBChat
1) Players must learn multiple positions. The starting LT may be the backup center.
2) Players must be willing to play out of position for the sake of the scout team.
3) In emergency situations do 1/2 line drills and team periods #Hogfbchat
A2. Guys learn multiple spots to try and give us more options. Try and have the best back up learn a couple spots as well. Our second team tackle might not be our back up tackle. As far as scout team, well that's where the legends are made (not always in a good way) #hogfbchat
A2: last year we had weeks where 1s were giving scout looks for both offense and defense. 2 spot if we can to practice tempo and keep practice moving. If we were short on bodies, kids would play out of position. OL->DL, RB->LB/CB, etc.. #Hogfbchat
A1: if you don’t film it now days, it’s as if it didn’t happen. With Hudl players don’t have any excuses to not watch film. The more you expose anyone to a concept in the most mediums possible the greater chance of retention and understanding. #Hogfbchat
A2 second thought: I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT STAND WHEN SCOUT D DOESNT GIVE US A GOOD LOOK. So I do my best to not have Scout O do the same. Nothing drives me up a wall than not having correct personnel or guys not reading the cards. #HogFbChat
A1: for my TE’s and H’s we film 7 on 7. The OL and my guys we filmed the OL/DL camp, our 3 day camp, and we will film a one day camp next month. I make notes for the kids and we’ve watched film together a couple of times. We want them to still have free time in summer. #hogfbchat
A2 I'll try and have them go half-line if that's a possibility. Otherwise we can get some one-on-one work done and still get the drills in. Just got to adapt to the situation. #HOGFBCHAT
A2: We have low numbers but it is by design. Not everybody is willing to come out and play in the split back veer. The ones who want to be there and want to put the team first, we rep the piss out of them. Depth comes from 2 way guys and young players growing up quick #hogfbchat
Every starting offensive lineman who isn’t playing on defense is on the scout team offensive line. This leaves us a few spots to work in some younger kids but keeps it very competitive during practice. #HogFbChat
A2: We do a lot of stuff on air or trash cans when we want a full group. Anytime we needed a full speed look we would go half line. At my previous school we had low numbers so I learned a lot about adjusting practice structure. #Hogfbchat
A1: Film as much as possible. Watch selected cutups as often as possible. Share them on @TAttackAcademy so kids can watch, read notes and conversations, and take quizzes/tests over technique and assignments. #hogfbchat
A2: Thankfully our numbers are really good so we don’t have that problem. However, many times they may not be ready for varsity football so we cross train guys at multiple spots. #hogfbchat
A3: mostly new group this year. My only position that has to change this much is Outside Tackle (shotgun spinner single wing). Blessed with one of the best lineman in the state right now so I can do a lot of different things #HogFbChat
A3: I believe most OL are naturally better at one of these schemes than the other two, but it’s our job to make them good at all 3 if you run all 3. We’re using all 3 and I feel pretty comfortable with our ability to execute all 3 kinds of schemes. So in short, yes 😂 #hogfbchat
A3- I stress the more you know...the more helpful you are to me. Right now I can play 6 guys and all but one can play all 5 positions. Everyone must be able to snap. That’s been a big plus for me. We use multiple schemes and guys just know the rules/technique. #hogfbchat
A3: our guys get a heavy dose of both gap/zone schemes. They could handle a man scheme as well. Thankful to work with a great group of kids. #hogfbchat
A3: we work off two schemes: frontside gap (zone) and backside gap (gap). Everything is based off of covered/uncovered and help/no help concepts for each. All schemes I will fit to this formula #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Never really thought about this. As coaches we try to select the best plays & scheme possible based on our personnel. That being said, I'm confident the work we will do leading up to week 1 will give them ability and confidence to sight adjust & handle whatever task.
A3: It isn’t too frequent that #WingT linemen get good at player each other’s positions, but the SKILLS and rules/blocks can be applied to each position. #hogfbchat
A3: if you train them all at a young age. Run zones, counter/power then they get a taste of all of it. When they get to the varsity level use what they are good at and what the team can be successful with #hogfbchat
A3. We are wing-t so they all learn how to down block, pull, double team. Only have a few "blocks" they need to learn so they are all adaptable no matter where they play. Think that's what the question was asking. #hogfbchat
A3: We can easily transition from gap to zone schemes. Zone takes a lot of work to perfect and get the OL to be confident in what they're doing no matter the front. #hogfbchat
A3: we have rules for our zone and gap schemes. When in doubt follow the rules. Depending who's on the field dictates the amount of tags we will carry into each game. During Mid-game personnel switch, we rely on our veterans to command the other guys to help them out #Hogfbchat
A2: we have done half line before. I ran the scout team O our first few weeks my first year. I got fired because I threw too many TDs (more picks though lol) and held them to too high of a standard on scout team 🤷🏻♂️ #HogFBChat
#hogfbchat
A3)
I don't use anything but gap in the run game and a few different pass pros. I'm a believer in getting real good instead of being ok at a bunch of stuff. Might be my own limits but I also don't believe in b.s. ing your way through anything.
Q3: Adaptability in high school depends on your guys We ran some zone last year and we weren’t that good at it but that was because the previous year the zone was run more like a gap scheme. Yea weird I know. We will do OL apocalypse where they all have to change spots #hogfbchat
A3: Very adaptable. Through teaching systems @harper_coach and @RunThePower have developed over the years, we block gap, zone, and man schemes with option/RPO, drop back passes with 5/6/7 man protections, screens, and PAP. Versatile, smart, and developed OL Athletes #hogfbchat
A4: depends on knowledge and experience. They cannot change a play, but they can call a protection or blocking assignment change. We will discuss on sideline if doesn’t work or does. #hogfbchat
I have seen our younger players GAIN CONFIDENCE by getting coached by varsity coaches, varsity players, and when they face kids their own age/size, they can blast them because practices are tougher than games. #hogfbchat
A4- we don’t change the play, but we do change the gap if the defense doesn’t align the way we want. We give the RB a call to let them know to run inside or outside 1 gap. Been effective for us. But they can’t change from counter to power just because. #hogfbchat
A4: We have certain plays (read/trap/speed option/oz/midline read) that are installed as LOS checks (will always check to the 3 or 1) tech. So we break huddle, find our tech, echo the rt or lt call and run the play. That way we’re never disadvantaged schematically. #hogfbchat
Not a huge fan of half line to me not a realistic rep with out all 5 going and working as a cohesive unit. We had younger guys hold bags during team. You get ur quality reps with controlled drills best on best working to combos.
A4: They have some freedom to change it up. They need to be able to adapt on the fly and be successful in it. I tell them they need to study as much film as possible, while allowing enough time to maintain grades, and make the calls at the line of blocking changes. #hogfbchat
A4. That is a work in progress. Still teaching the new system, so not much right now. We are going from a wing-t to a single back spread, so as the kids get more comfortable so will I in this reguard. #Hogfbchat
#hogfbchat adjustments came based on our sight adjust work in practice. There is no changing of the play, but we have adjustments they can go to if we get a crazy alignment we weren't expecting.
A4: we are working on this now being able to check into a good situation verses what’s called. Trust will come wit repetition and there will only be 1 or 2 things they could check to so it has to be predetermined #hogfbchat
A4: They don't have the opportunity to change plays, but they can work combos and techniques based on situation. But my OC does listen to what they have to say every series and will call things they suggest. #hogfbchat
A4: As a player who considers Himself pretty smart this sounds really bad. Linemen can't call a passing play without major complications.
Coaches let the QB do it because He can read the pass coverage, linemen wont/shouldn't be focusing on that. #hogfbchat
A4: not so much changing the play, but how we block it can change and they will adjust splits on their own depending on the play and what DL is giving us. #hogfbchat
A4: Center calls if from IT-LG my OT has freedom with the RE for the most part #HogFbChat good to throw a ton at them in practice so they see it how you see it
A4: our OL has calls but not to change the play. My guys have the freedom to change up who blocks who on certain things, but our QB is the one who checks the play at the LOS #hogfbchat
Q4: As they learn the who, how and why, we always talk about how rules are always negotiable as long as they understand leverage on the second level blocks. We can't practice every scenario. #hogfbchat

A4)
I've never considered this due to the fact that the offensive line is already the brains behind making all our plays go. If they do this...what would I do? Go to the concession stand? I'm already getting to heavy.
A4. OL change the play at the line? 0.00% that Evers happens. Make calls to adjust the blocking scheme of a play, all the time with the defense of the weeks we us all see up front.
#Hogfbchat
A4: Keep it simple by checking plays R or L. Coaches must take responsibility as much as possible. Also, with RPOs, OL doesn't have to worry about whether play is changed or not. It's a beautiful life. #Hogfbchat
A-3 very adaptable. We run all schemes to keep a defense on their toes. Rep, rep, rep along with explaining the differences in footwork and hand positions. #HogFbChat
Sorry I missed the #hogfbchat. Wife time! Kid is away at camp! So we are enjoying! Thanks to @CoachShiffman for covering! Coaches, you need to check out @CoachsLeather they got great deals right now!
A4: Change the play? Zero confidence. Change the way they block it. Next call, fold, etc. communication is key. if they screw it up, though... #hogfbchat
That's a wrap! Thank you all again for participating in the fastest hour on Twitter, the #hogfbchat We appreciate all of you for being here, participating or just lurking around! #AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo
A-4 I would trust them changing somethings...plays to a technique that we are looking for or a protection to a blitz. But normally our QB makes that call to ensure all players are on the same page. #HogFbChat
Please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and collaborations. This is a great profession and with the season upcoming you can rely on each other even more! Thank you all for what you do and for being a coach #hogfbchat
If anybody has any topics or questions they want to have discussed on an upcoming chat please do not hesitate to DM myself or @CoachDingus and we will get them up on the chat soon. #hogfbchat
A2: lots of TEs start learning to play tackle and FBs start learning guard. If we have a young guy on the cusp he will get work with the older guys to get him where he needs to be later in the season. #hogfbchat
We’d like to thank our official sponsor GameStrat! They provide teams with the most reliable and advanced sideline replay system. Check them out https://t.co/EJqjyFCYOr@GameStrat_#Hogfbchat
Depends on the year and the athleticism of the guys up front. Last couple of years we could run gap and zone really effectively, didn’t utilize man because we were undersized and quick, so the other two schemes played to our strengths #HogFbChat
A3: the key for adaptability in OL play is concept base teaching. First they need to understand at the base level blocking is covering defender hip with my hip. Then make sure they know the scheme (man/gap/zone). When prompted a rule always probe for the step and WHY #hogfbchat
A4:DO WHAT? 🤞 I PRAY they never do this, it may be the last game I get to coach in. 🤯Now if you mean make a call and modify the scheme that still falls in the boundary of the play (like a fold BS of IZ with a 4i) and that I had coached at some point yes, otherwise NO #hogfbchat
A2: Heavy Inside Run. Half Line = A lot of Reps. Same Play; Playside & Backside. Scout team is always tough, but it’s an opportunity for kids to get PT by being good scout team players. #Hogfbchat
A1: a lot of our install is done during spring, but we film a great deal of our practices and we watch it every other day. With Hudl, it’s a great way to have players watch practice and analyze their play and we can discuss it the next day. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat We take pride in "shuffling the deck". We learn and practice the other positions.
Scout: use 1st C, RG, and RT against 1st LG and LT as scout. 2 LG and 2 LT go against 2 RG and RT as scout. That puts 1 v1 and 2 v2 for a look in team and inside.
