Getting ready to w/ the crew! :) Best night of the week!
It's my favorite time of the week!
Greeting to our tweeps. Tonight we will discuss: Should Ss Have Time to Play at School? Join in for a lively discussion.
Howdy, Dave. Glad to see you here. Did you survive okay?
Hi Dave!!!! How are you doing??
I did survive! It took me about a week to fully recover though, glad we had today off.
Hi Erica! How are you tonight? Did you have school today? We were off for MLK Day.
I am doing great! Just working on my video announcements I make each week for our student council.
Hi Erica. Did you enjoy having today off? Glad you are joining us for .
Hello from chilly Indiana! How is everyone?
Your energy needs to be bottled and sold!!!! Does the Student Council make them?
Hey Erica! Glad you are here for
Hello friends! Colleen from Syracuse here. White knuckle driving from Oswego-home 2day. Thinking snow day tomorrow!
Hello, and - feels like home on a Monday night!
Right now I make them, after I record the kids, because we don't have much time during school to meet and teach them.
Hi Jenn!!!!! Hope you stayed inside today! We actually got 3 inches last night!Burned some cals shoveling! :)
Q1: Do your Ss have dedicated recess time everyday?
Your muscles must be amazing as much snow are you get! We stayed inside for sure. Wind chill never got above 0.
A1: They have a 15 minute recess, plus some recess time that goes along with lunch.
Sounds like a great way to spend the day. I’m sure your boys (all 5) loved it. LOL
I hear you - never seems to be enough of that kind of time! Kind of nice for them to be surprised a bit too!
Doing great! It was a wonderful Monday!
Well said Jenn - this is how I feel too! :) https://t.co/UnhmzuSBbt
Hello, and - feels like home on a Monday night!
It's coming in waves and not done with us yet...
A1: we have a 15 minute morning and a 20 minute lunch recess.
We have one kid from each 5th and 6th grade class on student council, we only have time to meet during part of lunch.
A1: At our school there is no recess time during the day, but each class have 45 minutes for PE everyday.
A1: Our students have a 25 min recess per day. Are there really elementaries without recess every day?
that almost sounds better, is your PE super structured or can they have some free time?
A:1 we have a 30 minute lunch recess
Are you happy about that? Sounds dreamy…I love snow! It’s hit or miss here in Indiana.
Hi Colleen-glad ur home safe-Can be scary driving in the snow
A1: We have 20 min. 4 recess just be4 lunch. We go outside whenever we can. Have a dedicated "snow" coat 4 school!
Half of my students complain everyday and don't want to go outside for recess, it blows my mind.
Unfortunately PE is too often a very structured setting. They have curriculum and teacher evals to deal with too.
Hi Scott - funny how the weather patterns change - just a few weeks ago we were talking about record highs!
is the PE taught by a specialist? Or PE teacher? No designated recess???
Q2: Do you plan brain breaks throughout the school day?
What do they want to do instead? Please don’t say video games!
A1: We have 2 dedicated times for recess. 1 after lunch wh/ lasts 20 min & one in late afternoon for 15 min.
I can truthfully say my own 2 kids, now teenagers, rarely got recess in 4th grade.
Yes, we have 3 full-time certified PE teachers. Curriculum to cover and tests to give in PE too.
We are right there with you in Arctic Indiana! Lol. Snow would make it easier to handle cold temps!
Yikes w/ the wind chill! Shoveled 3 driveways but it was powder and very light! lol
I 'm happy when I know I have food in the house:-)
No. Way. How did they handle it?
A2: stretch breaks, breaks, random dance parties, we run the track twice a day additionally, song break
Yes, games on the iPads or some just want to read.
Hi ! Joining late. A1: our Elem schls have 20 min am recess & 25ish min recess at lunch each day
A2 I don't do as many brain breaks as I should, but we do love !
Shocked to learn that some folks do not have dedicated recess time. PE is nice but need unstructured time. https://t.co/ujmFchj6YS
A1: At our school there is no recess time during the day, but each class have 45 minutes for PE everyday.
No art or music except for our talented music and art Ss. Only other specials are weekly library and computer lab.
A1: We have a 20 min recess before lunch. Sports class 1 x /week
I can’t figure out why kids today don’t like physical activity…I thought is was engrained in all kids.
A2: Brain breaks are a must in my opinion to break up long or intensive class chunks
Outside recess is a culture in R school-most kids have all the gear & go 2 nurse if not. NO EXCUSES 2 stay inside.
Is the morning recess a “before” school time? We used to have that but no more.
A2. I don't do as many brain breaks as I should.
A2: Yes, I try to schedule brain breaks daily. We move often during rotations too.
I make them go outside, but it seems to be hard every day to convince some of them.
A:2 always have breaks prepared, but I really go on feel and feedback from Ss. We move a lot during instruction anyway
A2: Love and to take breaks- kids do too. Since our lunch starts as 10:50, we ALL need it in the PM.
We go outside as long as the temps are above 25 degrees! (Dedicated snow coat???) https://t.co/Unek94uixu
A1: We have 20 min. 4 recess just be4 lunch. We go outside whenever we can. Have a dedicated "snow" coat 4 school!
A2: Dance parties to Just Dance vids on YouTube plus GoNoodle. Not enough time though with a very tight sched... 😔
Of course, with a great mama like you! Lucky kiddos!
rules be brain breaks. Ss love it and watching their class avatar transform is such fun.
no the kids also have 20 minutes b4 school if they are early. 15 minutes between ELA and math and then 20 b4 lunch
Q3: How does this statement make you feel? Today’s kids do not grow up playing and this has negatively impacted them.
Most of my Ss like to go out but there are always a few. We have dolls, legos, games etc outside too https://t.co/giY2q90r1L
Half of my students complain everyday and don't want to go outside for recess, it blows my mind.
A2: also consciously plan movement from one area to another of class or reason to stand up/sit down to make blood flow
We have a tiny hill-and sleds to go with it. Kids like to build snowmen.
We have a tiny hill-and sleds to go with it. Kids like to build snowmen.
Hi Jody!!!! How are you doing??? Things going well this year?
Hate that my Ss seldom get to just play outside. We need recess!
If your school hasn't tried recess b4 lunch. Not after! You're missing out. fewer recess probs & we cut down lunch waste by 70%
Seems to me the kids need some unstructured time - helps them learn how to cope.
A Whip and Nae Nae every so often lifts everyone’s spirits! It’s entertaining to them when I show sklz! https://t.co/7vYub5zaBL
A2: Dance parties to Just Dance vids on YouTube plus GoNoodle. Not enough time though with a very tight sched... 😔
Wow, how can lunch start at 10:20? Who's hungry then? Seems like bean-counter planned that one for $ not kids!
A3. I feel students don't have the imagination that they use to. They don't know how to be inventive and play....
What is the reasoning for not having recess? Important part of the day for soo many!
Singing “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” My Ss would love to answer yes to that.
Today, wind chill -12, a few kids walked in shorts, some w/just hoodies. Not kidding. No snow play here.
As an introvert, I get it! Some S r just not energized by outside or physical play. So important 2 have quiet options 2
A2:We have a "brain break b/t reading and writing which is a long block. It's not long,(5 min) but allows Ss to recharge.
I just have so many kids that say there is nothing to do, would love a little structure.
Decided more time needed in all subject area when we implemented CCSS.
A2: I use Go Noodle; Chicken Fat song on Fridays & now use the Walking Classroom on days we don’t have PE
A3: I agree with that statement and it makes me sad. My school has a 90 min "games day" block to try to help with teamwork
Can you explain walking classroom?
I really like this idea - Recess B4 Lunch.
Maybe we should do a teacher montage of us doing Whip and Nae Nae!
Hi Nancy! Good start to 2016 -embedded in another HS for 6 wks. Bummed today - no GoogleEI again so came to to cheer up
Repeating - Q3: How does this statement make you feel? Today’s kids do not grow up playing and this has negatively impacted them.
How's the start of 2016 for you?
We need to have another dance party!
Yikes - I feel Ss need that few minutes of UNSTRUCTURED time-I know I need it when I’m at a PD day for extended time
A3: Today’s Ss don’t know how to play when given unstructured time that doesn’t include having a screen at their disposal.
I think they do-the engrained part has just been buried under video games/other sedentary activities.
A:3 We shouldn't assume Ss come w/ developed SEL or academic skills. Our job 2 B intentional about putting them in these situations
it's the best! I pushed for it 2 years ago. I haven't addressed a recess problem since. No one rushes 2eat or b first
A3: Childhood obesity is becoming a major health concern because kids don’t get enough play during their days.
and usually calm down and decide they aren't upset or it wasn't a big deal, they come in cooled down and no stomach aches
If my kids aren't interested in sports it's as if recess has nothing for them. Unless you get one of the few swings.
Sounds great! (except our lunch is at 10:50-on 2 hr delays, we eat 10 minutes after the tardy bell! LOL.
slowchat Q -Discussing balance: How do you keep Ss needs balanced with your personal/prof needs? https://t.co/8xS7zz6QKc
I’m going to propose this to our Admin if we ever decide to reinstate recess.
what do you do when the students finish their lunch? Is there something they can do?
I think Ss feel ‘safer’ w/ structured- maybe it’s easier???
A3: Sad-kids need more guidance on how to get along. Board games, outside games etc. teach many interpersonal skills.
I proposed it as let's at least try 4th and 5th grade as a test.
Well, 600 students with a cafeteria that holds about 150, makes for many lunches in the schedule. We are first!
Going to suggest this to my admin. I’ve heard this before & it makes sense. Thx for sharing Nathan. https://t.co/sDy89m5oMh
If your school hasn't tried recess b4 lunch. Not after! You're missing out. fewer recess probs & we cut down lunch waste by 70%
Try being in a school with almost 1,200.
they only get 15 to 20 minutes to eat. They are never completely done and waiting. They enjoy sitting and talking
A3: It is a worry that kids today don't know how to solve own play problems - always adult mediated. Also hard to amuse selves
Q4: Will your class/school/district be participating in Global School Play Day on Feb. 3?
Got my Ss all bundled up the other day and had 2 take them in-office decides - but I didn't read my email!
Our lunch is from 11:30-12:05, but lunch goes from 11-12:30.
we eat at 12:40, recess at 12:20. Morning recess and snack at 10:30
Hello! Welcome! It is should children have play time in school?
Another busy start - We had a PD day in district ((modified) style. - It was fabulous! Folks loved it.
Not sure— I can ask.. https://t.co/Ak7qp38J4G
Q4: Will your class/school/district be participating in Global School Play Day on Feb. 3?
Need to change definition of school. Should be about freedom, not control. Everyone needs "play" time
I think it’s good to get fresh air. But there are days when I know I wouldn’t want to go out…
I'll have to bring it up.
A4: my class will be and our reading buddies. Play is powerful.
I think the huge spike in childhood anxiety is linked to lack of time to play.
My schedule is from 7:30-4:00, you sure?
I’d say!! We do have some kiddos wearing just sweatshirts. https://t.co/kD6HeaVrAw
Ok being Canadian now...send kids out to -20°C (-5 or so for you). At that temp, you better wear coat to/from schl!
A4. Never heard of this! But I will be asking!
Yes, and there is research to back that claim up.
We scheduled our recess at 1:00 after 90 min reading block. Good break for kids, hard on teachers.
A4: Didn't know about it! Will look into it...
Digital field trip opportunity? Take southern Ss on snowman building adventure!
Q5: What do you believe to be true about play at school/
you don't do reading and writing first thing in the morning?
In good weather one of our TA's plays kickball, kids play 4 square, jumprope, or trade Pokemon cards.
We would love to do a snowman building virtual field trip.
Ooppsss. Well, I could get more completed! Lounge day!
So much of the day is structured even after school. We need to work that imagination time into the clssrm. https://t.co/urdM4VctTc
A3. I feel students don't have the imagination that they use to. They don't know how to be inventive and play....
Two teachers in our building are hosting a game club after school on Wednesdays for anyone who wants to stay.
Q4: I try to find "centres" time each day so my 3rd and 4th kiddos can play and explore. It's the highlight of our day!
A5: I believe that play is an essential part of everyday life, and it is should be incorporated into each and every day at school.
A5. I don't think there is enough play. Kinder use to be a lot. Now there's hardly any.
school and learning should be enjoyable and kids should get to be kids while still meeting standards.
Tardy bell 8:35 then-10min until special, 40 min special, 25min open, 25min rti reading groups, 25 min open, then lunch.
Many play problems seem to get escalated to "bully" problems. Kids can't tell the difference.
A5: I believe we should assign play as HW. Play a board game with our PS and siblings, find 5 things on a nature walk etc.
Q6: Should play be part of every subject in school?
We are combining it w/our PD day on Feb 5th so we will have a 1/2 day. Play w/buddy classes too:-)
We eat at 11:40 - 12 Recess 12:00-12:20 then recess from 1:45 - 2
I have students from 7:55-3:30, so still not time to get much done too often.
True , kids lack skills to recognize unhealthy play situations & deal with bullying early - grows out of control
most "bully" problems I have dealt w/ stem from playground. But maybe b/c not enough play to learn diff
A4: Have never heard of this until now - can’t wait to check it out. Will you ask your admins?
We are doing this too- Can't wait!! LOVE edcamps!
We definitely need to make school and learning more fun.
I always try to incorporate play, music, writing, and art with every unit..
Not going 2lie my class gets more recess and PE than any other class. I do what they need when they need it Or when I need it ha
A6: Yes play, art, music should be part of every school subject.
A6: I try to do as much hands on as possible, but hard to do for writing. Would love ideas!
A5: I believe there isn’t enough play at school.
I used to assign dice and card games as math homework. Ss & parents appreciated the family game time.
I believe the movement is bringing the idea of play back into our schools.
That would be so fun! :) We’d love to do that too! https://t.co/Y8FBLJPslQ
We would love to do a snowman building virtual field trip.
A6: Yes, play in every subject. Loving for this!
In Utah many people do a thing called FHE (Family Home Evening) on Monday nights.
I would love the 4 recesses during day, but in MI 15 min= 25 min bc of winter gear
That’s such an interesting point. I think you may be right! https://t.co/3pTxbxlk0n
Many play problems seem to get escalated to "bully" problems. Kids can't tell the difference.
Yes, making and tinkering definitely count as play
I like the sound of "Family Home Evening" Tell me more
I equate "play" with being creative. The maker space example is great. Also problem solving in math I feel can be counted
Oops, gotta go! Thanks for cheering up my Monday !
Everyone is encouraged not to plan activities on Mondays, we even have early out that day. Make time for family.
Love the idea, but many would balk at the tie to the Church of Latter Day Saints.
Jody!! Glad you were here for
I'm curious to see how people would define play. What attributes and behaviors do we consider play? https://t.co/fOdfgLjPaD
Bye, Jody, Thanks for joining with us tonight for .
Here’s an interesting concept: https://t.co/QBc4oWbhXw (I think they go to schools & help kids learn how to “play” at recess.
Q7: Do you know what research says about play and child development? Share what you know.
that's just what I need thanks!
We have a couple of picnic tables where kids can gather and draw or play chess or just chat.

Play and Children's Learning | National Association for the Education of Young Children | NAEYC https://t.co/VBDNOcBDBv
I agree! Sometimes I feel like I’m rushing the whole learning process. https://t.co/mq25WZO6L4
We definitely need to make school and learning more fun.
Great way to get that creativity in with content. https://t.co/vJRf6KzZ1r
I always try to incorporate play, music, writing, and art with every unit..
A7: my stnt tchr is in the Playworks module-any research Adrian?
B4 our holiday break we had a 1/2 day reading marathon & Ss brought pillows/blankets/stuffed animals & 1/2 day board games. Rocked!
Sorry to have missed was a boe meeting with my students presenting about what we do in G & T.
Please tell us more about FHE!
Q8: Do you, as an adult, find time to play everyday?
I can relate to this!!! It takes so long - even for 4th graders. https://t.co/rNLKF7VgZy
I would love the 4 recesses during day, but in MI 15 min= 25 min bc of winter gear
A8: Having kids at home and being one at heart makes that easy for me. Also a great stress reliever!
So good seeing you here Jody! Have a great week! https://t.co/HlnSr2nUUV
Oops, gotta go! Thanks for cheering up my Monday !
(FHE in the context of LDS Church, refers to family spending time together doing activities.
A8: I like to find time everyday to do things I enjoy and relax. Not sure all of my activities would be classified as play.
a8: I'm as ADHD as any of my ss so yes! I need recess too!
Missed you! That sounds so fab presenting to the BOE! Way to go.
I know that I can’t sit for hours during staff dev. days. Definitely need brain breaks.
Hard not to play around you!!! ! https://t.co/wuwzvcckkF
A8: Having kids at home and being one at heart makes that easy for me. Also a great stress reliever!
Sorry friends my page is unresponsive. Tweeting from my phone to say thanks and goodnight!
Why certainly. If you teach, you'd better find times to play. All those kids? No play? Wasted opportunity. 😉
yeah it's root is from the church. Usually quick Bible story, make a treat, play a game as a family.
Thanks, Colleen!! Enjoy your night!
A7: play is integral in a child's development/learning. All!studies show this. aren't just playing, learning to interact/think
I think I can agree with this statement too! https://t.co/sSdIVPjbOG
A8: I like to find time everyday to do things I enjoy and relax. Not sure all of my activities would be classified as play.
A8 life is generally fun and enjoyable wherever I am.
speaking, communication, math science, write about it testing a hypothesis using research all of them social studies
I think so too, Scott. I play a few games on my computer, read on my Kindle, but I need to build in more movement.
and if not in curriculum or school up to T to make t w priority
Love that kid of thinking. Let’s not waste a golden opportunity, right? Play on!
Dear friends- another amazing evening. Thanks for reminding me to take time to play. Thanks to and -
no joke the last PD brought me a box of fidget toys. I was as "focused" as ever ha I'm a terrible student
I still like the idea! I’m sure that FHE could work (with or w/o the Bible story) :)
Good night tweeps. Go forth and continue to be awesome this week, and remember to play.
