Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.

Hi Barbara. I'm with you on this one. Holiday decorating, holiday baking and spreading Christmas cheer is what I'm currently doing in my spare time! #LeadLAP
Hey #LeadLAP crew! I’m Greg, an elementary principal from@Northern California. Checking in until the family is up and ready to go build a pig pen, yes a pig pen, for my daughter’s 4-H project. #NewHobby#Bacon
Some of my favorite hobbies include reading (professional books and fun fiction), writing, walking near any water, and spending time laughing with friends and family! #LeadLAP!
A1: At the start of each staff meeting do a check in/check out w guided questions. During work day host book club on issues relevant to staff/students. Work w staff so that they facilitate the above & create that space for group, then connection will continue beyond you. #LeadLAP
A1: I use my office space. I open it up for students to have lunch w/ me, but then they often find other students who need someone else too. Staff too - my door is open to them and often we are joking around and more people join! #LeadLAP
A1 Since I work w/ adults, I try to include opportunities in every meeting for them to connect - on personal level and about the work we do for students. #LeadLAP!
A1: We have a “Tiny Tech Cafe” corner in our Innovation Lab. Teachers and students stop by to chat, grab a treat, or just take a quick moment to breathe. It’s always an open-door to this space! All are welcome! #LeadLAP
A1: As an @iborganization school, we are committed to having our Ss impact their community through the #CAS program (Creativity, Action, Service). Multiple opportunities for them to connect and serve. #leadlap
A1: I loved having this stage which doubled as a picnic table for our Counselor Cafe lunch dates, where everybody had a seat at the table, for talk time, to connect and laugh and enJOY one another. We ALL loved it. #leadlap
What are some of your guided questions? Could you share? I'd like to start PL days this way! We start staff meetings with celebrations & fails. The fails are the best as everyone feels comfortable to share those! #LeadLAP
A1: I use my office space. I open it up for students to have lunch w/ me, but then they often find other students who need someone else too. Staff too - my door is open to them and often we are joking around and more people join! #LeadLAP

A1. Every staff PD we spend time connecting with each other and provide ways outside of school too. For kids we place emphasis on staff connecting and get feedback from kids throughout yr on “how they feel at school and do they have trusted adult”. #LeadLAP
A1 — I think kids (and adults) need to learn collaboration skills. Working together is important and a learned skill. It helps us all to be better at being ourselves. #LeadLAP
A1: we have a daily morning meeting where we get updates for the day and we share concerns, celebrations and shout outs with each other. It is helpful for many reasons but definitely making connections. We have FUN and laugh together which creates shared experiences. #LeadLAP
A1- we use any nook and cranny for space, but it's all about connecting with each other daily- especially just sitting together at lunch! Some intentional and some just happens #LeadLAP
A1: Set up Ss in teams on day 1 for gamifying but Ss connect, then can swap 1 or 2 out here & there for special missions, give class a common goal, & build in activities to support getting to know each other further: All About Me Kahoots/Frayer a Friend #Eduprotocols#LeadLAP
Getting kids excited about writing! Congrats to our Great Authors! Loved having lunch with them and listening to them read their pieces. @palaciosfam4#BoldSchool#leadLAP#relentless
A1: at my school the leadership students all selected teachers to be their “big bear”, they are our lil bear, they email, text, drop notes or candy in our boxes, meet up with us once a month or so! This is 1 example...#LeadLAP HERES my lil bear @ekolb1237 it’s very special
A1 We all talk about taking the time to write “Thank You” notes to show appreciation so we build that TIME into staff meetings 5 minutes. Friendly Friday’s are for students to move around the cafeteria to have lunch with a NEW friend! #LeadLAP
A1 (part two) offering lots of collaboration options for students - giving choice and voice in not only product but in process also. Allowing kids (learners of all ages) opportunities to work, learn, grow with others. ✏️🖤⭐️#LeadLAP
A1: opportunities to journal at a staff meeting and then share with small groups or individuals. The journal includes topics about education, students and how they see themselves as an educator.
#LeadLAP
This year we moved from four lunch periods to one because of the change in our schedule. Now everyone has lunch at the same time. Ss are connecting with teachers, counselors and friends. Ts can connect with one another. Admin is out and about chatting with Ss. #LeadLAP
A1: Just allowing time to connect with one another is important, whether through circles or check ins or inclusion activities. Involving people in healthy dialogue regularly makes hard conversations easier. #LeadLAP
A1b: We also used our uke lab to connect and play together. Music can be SO unifying; we can't all talk at the same time but we CAN all play at the same time! #togetherwearebetter#leadlap
Good morning! Lacey from STL, traveling teacher in a suburban district. A1: Every school is different; Commons, library, etc - but I wish I saw more S/T communication and engagement. #LeadLAP
A1: At our last staff meeting we got out our cell phones, found a photo that we wanted to share, and talked about it with the colleagues at our table. Seeing everyone smile, hearing the joy... it’s warmed my earthy! #LeadLAP
A1 Restorative circles, open communication, making it more about the learning, correcting, and making things right with those we hurt, then getting our "pound of flesh" #leadlap
Good Morning #leadlap ! Debbie from CO! Glad to be here even if a little late! Middle School science teacher! One of my favorite hobbies is photography! This was an exciting capture!
A1 Our teachers open their classrooms quite a bit during lunch for a myriad of reasons; These 30 minutes can be huge with fostering relationships #LeadLAP
A1: Create social situations during school activities (ie. faculty meetings) where T's can chat. We have a K-8 school, so a lot of the primary and middle school T's don't get the chance to know each other without this. #LeadLAP
A1: At the beginning of the year, we make cardboard puzzle piece cut-outs of ourselves and then we “fit” them together and hang on our wall to show how everyone in our school family is connected and fits together. This stays up all year as a powerful reminder!! #LeadLAP
A1. Don't you just love this idea for connecting the thoughts of young students (they insert their written tweets into the box) and then they can be shared out on the school's Twitter account? Encourages ALL voices to be heard. ALL students' matter! #LeadLAP
A1: We set up a @Flipgrid for our Tech Team to share out different things that make them smile. It was so fun to get to know what makes people smile outside of work too. 😊📣#Leadlap
A1 - I have created a mini makerspace and whiteboard walls in my office so the first thing a student does when he/she comes is some sort of maker activity or whiteboard drawing with me to calm down and connect #LeadLAP
A1 This year we held our first back to school philosophy workshop on the beach - team builiding activities, bbq, time to swim and touch base after the summer. New Ts got to know everyone so quickly! #LeadLAP
A1: opportunities to journal at a staff meeting and then share with small groups or individuals. The journal includes topics about education, students and how they see themselves as an educator.
#LeadLAP
A1 We have Circle Time every #CelebrateMonday in our Schoolhouse during a class period we call Connections. Sean here from NC joining in #leadlap a little late.
Good stuff! It's always important to build connection making into the lesson design. I use Harkness Discussions to help students build a discourse community that helps them move themselves from wanting to be right to seeking to make meaning together. #LeadLAP
A1: Our advisory program meets once a week and is a space for students in grades 6-8 to connect with each other and a teacher over the course of their middle school career while focusing on enduring topics such as team building and giving back. #LeadLAP
I recently spoke at a school that has gone to Thankful Thursdays with a similar initiative. You can't be stressed and grateful at the same time, so we're using #gratitude intentionally, to combat stress while we connect. #leadlap
A1: Listening to what they need and then making it happen. After school clubs have been one really effective way..sign language, chess, PRISM, Coding, Sports, Music, Girl Power, Positive Dog...whatever it takes! #leadlap
We took our staff to the Calgary Zoo for our first PL day this year! It wasn't a whole retreat but it was a great way to build up the staff! We did a scavenger hunt! #LeadLAP
A1: Advisory time happens the first 20 minutes of each day and starts with a global read aloud. Having a common experience and time to ease into the day has helped so much! #leadlap
A1. At thanksgivingthis year @Carondelet_HS gave time in the day and supplies for all to write a thank you to someone in the school. It was lovely, and the ones that came my way meant so much to me. #LeadLAP
This year we moved from four lunch periods to one because of the change in our schedule. Now everyone has lunch at the same time. Ss are connecting with teachers, counselors and friends. Ts can connect with one another. Admin is out and about chatting with Ss. #LeadLAP
A2:One of the benefits of creating a space for students and staff to connect is the creation of a social environment where students can express themselves without judgment ultimately risking self disclosure and feeling safe about it. #LeadLAP
A2: I believe that genuinely connecting with others benefits us in every way. it allows for reflection & ownership. When we fell connected with self & others we feel safe to learn & grow in the classroom, at work, & most importantly at home. #LeadLAP
The principal and I also have lunch with one student from each class on Thursdays so by the end of the school year we will have had lunch with every kiddo. The students get a pencil and a picture with us. #LeadLAP
A1: Teachers organized a silent auction during a faculty meeting. Staff donated items they made including soaps, artwork, wood working items, etc. We raised some $, competed for items, and showed off each other's talents. It was a blast! #LeadLAP
A2: Ts and Ss see eachother as people first, not necessarily authority figures. A mutual respect and understanding will develop if properly cultivated. Healthy boundaries are key. #leadlap
A2: As soon as you have a culture of sharing & connection it breeds collaboration. It's not a competition. Working TOGETHER is the best way to achieve greatness! #LeadLAP
Good morning, #LeadLAP! My name is Tim and I'm coming to you from Vancouver over on the left coast of Canada. A new hobby that I've picked up this year is podcasting! Happy to be here.
As the one who manages the district social media, I'm stealing this! Can have all my buildings with one and select one from each to tweet daily. Each principal can choose and send to me. Awesome! #LeadLAP
A1: At the beginning of the year, we make cardboard puzzle piece cut-outs of ourselves and then we “fit” them together and hang on our wall to show how everyone in our school family is connected and fits together. This stays up all year as a powerful reminder!! #LeadLAP
A1 I try very hard to be very intentional about team building. Every event begins w/ TB and I try to emphasize it’s importance w/ T’s in their classrooms. Establishing connectedness in the culture is key. I often say “Culture eats structure for lunch” #LeadLAP
A2. Student learning will flourish when they feel valued and connected; same for teachers and professional growth as they will have a high efficacy. #LeadLAP
I also pull kiddos who are having a conflict and have them work together on a maker challenge so that they see the strengths in each other and change their perceptions of each other #LeadLAP
A2: Creating a strong culture by building relationships & trust. Then T's are more likely to stay when things get hard. It's a cycle that starts with relationships! #leadlap
A2: When students know they are in a space free from judgment, criticism, or anger, they can process their own circumstances to refocus and realign their mindset. Every single person in the building needs a place where acceptance and empathy are the norm. #LeadLAP
A1. Don't you just love this idea for connecting the thoughts of young students (they insert their written tweets into the box) and then they can be shared out on the school's Twitter account? Encourages ALL voices to be heard. ALL students' matter! #LeadLAP
A2: I could really use help with this for one of my students. Has been a bully & fighter in past. No one trusts him anymore. How can I help him find a positive friend base? Parents encourage their kids not to be around him. #LeadLAP#helpme
Q2- Ss are willing to take risks for Ts they are connected to and taking risks can equal big academic rewards. Ts get to see Ss as kids and not just students when they are connecting.... don't forget they are just kids and make mistakes #leadlap
A2: when students & staff connect with one another they become partners in learning! ✅
They become friends, who care for each other, 👀look out for each other, support, encourage💥
! Creating an awesome culture!🎉😇#LeadLAP
A2 It’s the place where we all spend a huge chunk of our days so that feeling of safety and sense of belonging and “home” is important. That alone is reason and benefit enough for me to be sold #LeadLAP
With my @Skyline_WC tutors, the annual fall retreat we hold with our @umichSweetland peers serves as a time for our team to celebrate writing + one another. Students getting to know one another outside of the classroom can lead to greater connect within it! #LeadLAP
In reply to
@carlameyrink, @Skyline_WC, @umichSweetland
A2- Ss are an often times untapped resource in which educators can learn strategies for making school better. I have learned more from the Ss in my Leadership council this year then from any PD. It also allows us to understand we are more empathetic when this happens #leadlap
If a visitor walked through your school’s doors right now, what kind of atmosphere would they find?
Great relationships and community in your school is where you begin to have a great answer to this question.
#LeadLAPhttps://t.co/CV2XOQSGFV
I can't take the credit. This was a district wide vision from my Sup. and central office. We moved to block schedule in the district which required a single lunch period. We're a HS only district. The connectivity became a benefit. #LeadLAP
You could definitely make your own cardboard cut-outs, but this year I found some at a local teacher supply store for under $10 and it was worth the investment to me to buy them already traced/cut out! #LeadLAP
A2: When Ss feel their voice and identity is honored and valued, they are invested. When Ss know that we are working hard to give them their best learning experience possible, it makes it cool to care. When Ss like you and respect you they’re more engaged #LeadLAP
A2: When we received the National School of Character distinction, we had reduced discipline referrals by 59%, increased attendance to 90.2% and strengthened state test scores. But the BEST data was anecdotal; our Ss felt cared for, connected, like they mattered, loved. #leadlap
Good stuff! It's always important to build connection making into the lesson design. I use Harkness Discussions to help students build a discourse community that helps them move themselves from wanting to be right to seeking to make meaning together. #LeadLAP
Q2: Every member of a school wants to be seen. We want to know our voice is heard and important. The more opportunity we give to allowing people to connect, the more we build community. We have to be intentional in allowing for healthy dialogue. #leadlap
A2. Academically we all can learn from one another. I am working a lot of students on history research and have learned so much this week. It’s fun #leadLAP
Love the idea of the objective being Ss feeling safe enough to take risks! The rewards will definitely be great when the kids feel safe and connected to their teacher! #LeadLAP
A2: involve everyone in curating a culture of positive recognition.
#LeadLAP
Positive Teacher Referrals for Improved School Climate https://t.co/4rndLpJd8v
Every moment you can spend in the hall, get in the hall.
Talk to kids, give fist bumps, see what's happening in classrooms.
Get out of your room, get out of your office! #leadlap#edleadership
One strategy I used was having students use "encouraging words" with one another, either to recognize a classmate for something they did or helping to lift a classmate's spirits when he/she was down. #leadlap
A1: One of the connecting resources that we're using in our middle school this year is @Seesaw. It's so awesome for our kids to be able to share their learning and then receive likes and comments from parents, teachers, AND administrators! #LeadLAP#authenticaudience@Rick_Bath
A2: Not only does it have great benefits socially for Ss & Ts, but it also creates that environment of risk taking & trust that allows all voices to be not only heard, but to be responded to (Thanks @k_shelton & #DitchSummit day 1) #LeadLAP
A2) Building an environment that you are listening with no judgement creates a school culture that we are working for the same common goal. Success for each other. #LeadLAP
A1: Our December faculty meeting is all about connection! The staff planned and agenda of holiday performances by Ss, games for Ts, and holiday sweet treats! Santa may even stop by ... #LeadLAP
People see the good in us when we are transparent with our feelings and emotions. We discover how much we can really trust someone based on their emotional interactions. Healing circles allow for this connection.#LeadLAP
A3: Sharing experiences, pain, joy, trauma, excitement, hopes and dreams helps us break down walls and see ourselves in each other's eyes. This creates a sense of belonging that feels good. When we are connected w our community we are able to feel emotionally healthy. #LeadLAP
A3: Trust comes from the connections and with that we get support we (they) need. In the hard times & the good times. Emotionally being able to trust someone is key. #LeadLAP
One idea is to find a way to have the student be an expert in something and then teach it to peers. I’ve had an oragami expert, playground game leader, etc. Helps others see them in a new light #leadlap
A2: When we are given the space to connect with one another and see past the superficial and often times judgemental short interactions we can begin to see each others unique talents and strenths allowing for trust to develop and people opening up to being vunerable! #leadlap
A2: Education is hard work and it is heart work. We need each other. We need to help each other and connect with each other. We are all in this together. #LeadLAP
A3: Sharing experiences, pain, joy, trauma, excitement, hopes and dreams helps us break down walls and see ourselves in each other's eyes. This creates a sense of belonging that feels good. When we are connected w our community we are able to feel emotionally healthy. #LeadLAP
A3: Our students & staff need emotional safety & connections; we need resiliency now more than ever and connections help build that safety net. #LeadLAP!
A2: When we are given the space to connect with one another and see past the superficial and often times judgemental short interactions we can begin to see each others unique talents and strenths allowing for trust to develop and people opening up to being vunerable! #leadlap
A3: You don't have to live in survival mode when you know others are there to help you sail the stormy seas! We ALL have bad days and mountains that seem too difficult to climb. Share the load so you can keep moving forward. #LeadLAP
I love this idea. I want to do this with all of our retirees this spring. We have so much wisdom collectively from all of their years of experience! #LeadLAP
A3: The emotional benefits are kids who trust, who have #empathy for one another, who feel safe and secure right where they are with who they are. They feel like superheroes, ready to come to the rescue and save the world.
https://t.co/3ZPHnvNSj5#leadlap
A3 As @StephenRCovey says seek first to understand before being understood. When we understand others we see behaviors through a completely different lense, we often find those behaviors are not personal, and have nothing to do with us #leadlap
I suggest giving him the total truth process by @DrErnieMendes. Let's try to understand his pain first. Find a peer mentor that can relate to some of his traumas. Building trust with a student is ensuring there is no rush and no time frame. He will see your intentions. #LeadLAP
A2: I could really use help with this for one of my students. Has been a bully & fighter in past. No one trusts him anymore. How can I help him find a positive friend base? Parents encourage their kids not to be around him. #LeadLAP#helpme
A3: When Ss know they have an adult who will champion for them, it gives them the safe space to become their best. It makes it a lot easier to be reflective, make mistakes, be vulnerable, when you know you’ll be met with grace and love - even in disciplinary situations. #LeadLAP
A3: When students are in an emotional safe space they are more likely to produce for you. Safety is a basic need for all kids. They are more likely to show respect for you and others, etc. #leadlap
Yes! When my mom was dying and I shared openly about the highs and lows, it really helped to connect experiences and strengthen empathy and compassion. It was also a lifeline for me when my world completely stopped after the passed away. We have to be brave to share! #LeadLAP
Barbara. I have to admit something. I love you. Your focus on students. You inspire kindness and love which sets students up for success in life and school. THANK YOU. #leadlap
A3: The emotional benefits are kids who trust, who have #empathy for one another, who feel safe and secure right where they are with who they are. They feel like superheroes, ready to come to the rescue and save the world.
https://t.co/3ZPHnvNSj5#leadlap
A3. If someone is emotionally connected they will develop trust - trust leads to true relationships where “you can move mountains” together. That is a positive culture! #LeadLAP
A3: Amygdala hijack is real. The emotional part of our brain needs to be taken care of first. Creating a safe space is important. If not, students and ourselves are constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. Connection with people brings safety to all of us. #Leadlap
A3- having a collaborative space for students and staff to connect builds relationships // ALL of our students NEED to be connect with adults in our schools. Build PLAY into your day in a way that Ts & Ss can connect #LeadLAP
A3: Our ability to think clearly and creatively is the result of being in a healthy environment. We create that environment and the sky is the limit! #leadlap
Indeed we see through that perspective that people bring their previous experiences emotionally into their current learning. We don't always know what someone else is going through. #LeadLAP
A3: Tight emotional bonds makes it less likely for folks to assume bad intentions as well as increasing the likelihood of each individual taking on more personal responsibility. #leadlap
A2: Connection begins with the professionalism of allowing for student voice. At SOH, we allow for student peer mediators to be the VOICE of the student when running circles. When we are in a ⭕️ we are all equal and safe, building community.
A2. I adore this idea by @aaron_hogan about getting everyone to share out what they are learning or what's going on in their classrooms. Try it! #LeadLAP
A3: Know that we all have something we are working on makes us vulnerable, but human. We need each other! That sailboat vs. cruise ship mentality is a real thing. We all play a part w/our strengths if we are willing to play a role in steering the sailboat. #LeadLAP#tlap S's too!
Tamara. Thank you. Thank you for being vulnerable. Thank you for being human. Thank you for sharing. My heart is with you, and if you ever need a mama hug, I've gotchu. #leadlap
Yes! When my mom was dying and I shared openly about the highs and lows, it really helped to connect experiences and strengthen empathy and compassion. It was also a lifeline for me when my world completely stopped after the passed away. We have to be brave to share! #LeadLAP
A2: To me, this is all about #visiblelearning. Modeling is a powerful teaching practice. We all have something to learn from each other, which is why as professionals we need to spend more time in each other's classrooms and spaces. #LeadLAP
A3: Once Ss / Ts have the culture of allowing every voice to be heard and responded to, they feel that empowerment & will not only have empathy for others in group, but they will thrive in that supportive environment. Failure won't be seen as devastating but as learning. #LeadLAP
So true! I love when students greet me before I can greet them in the hall. Being in a new school this year, it's such a joy to see the joy on their faces when you stop to turn that greeting-in-passing into a short conversation about them! #LeadLAP
A3: Highly recommend this book! It helped me so much to understand trauma and the implications for our practices at school with brain development. #LeadLAP
Wow @tamaraletter this is so powerful. I can't even imagine. My dad passed suddenly and I still have a hard time sharing with others about it. Good for you. #LeadLAP
In reply to
@tamaraletter, @mreruchie, @tamaraletter
As a group of people (a youth minister, community figure, and a gang unit police officer) explained to me, our kids seek an identity and belonging. If we don't give that to them, there are others (sometimes nefarious) that are willing to give them that belonging. #LeadLAP
A3: When students and staff connect, learning accelerates. When we build relationship, when we care about each other, it makes everything else easier - especially when things get tough. #LeadLAP
A3. I feel like I am answering broadly here, but being authentic is such a surprising helpful thing. Apologize if when wrong, getting excited and showing it, etc..#LeadLAP
So glad Meredith dropped that pic so I could think it through! Add another box for community either by the office of each building and/or at the gym entrance too for community tweets. #LeadLAP
You are NOT allowed to make me tear up in this chat, Marisol! The holidays are definitely the hardest, but your sweet words just lifted me up! You are a treasure! #LeadLAP
A2: Creating space for Ss and Ts to connect provides a solid foundation for collaboration, innovation, and deep learning. Education is tough, we need one one other to be successful and it starts with connection. #LeadLAP.
Especially when it's dark, for sure. When I was hit by that drunk driver after school one day, my school family rallied around me, the kids wrote healing notes of empathy and encouragement and the teachers brought meals to feed my family. #leadlap
A4: There is always a fear of investing time in any new school initiative that may fazed out or be forgotten about. Let me reassure you that Restorative Practices is not a going away. It’s a philosophy, a way of being, a way of life. #LeadLAP
A4: I’ve witnessed leaders blaming lack of time, or even claiming that staff &/or students don’t want to engage in sharing. I haven't found this to be true. Instead, I think it's the leaders who fear vulnerability & throw up these barriers to protect themselves. #LeadLAP
A2) Academic benefits for connecting w/ Ss is ability to try new projects bc you identify their talents and strengths. My Ss loved reading Romeo and Juliet. Found my “performers” so this year we made a news cast for our holiday showcase displaying their acting skills. #LeadLAP
A3: In the business world, customers generally don't buy products until they know, like, and trust the person or brand. The same thing is true in education spaces. When the students in a learning community know, like, and trust the staff, ANYTHING is possible! #LeadLAP
I can empathize with you Kristina as I also experienced my dad passing some time ago. The sharing and unpacking of that is cathartic. We're able to be that for others as well. #LeadLAP
A4- sometimes it is actual space, time and creativity to get the space used for connecting. My brain is in overdrive with lots of new ideas from the chat!!! #leadlap
We can't build relationships if we can't connect with students outside the classroom... meet them where they at
A4: One barrier I see is that we build the connections, & people naturally gravitate to specific people. But now how do we make sure we don't have cliques? I don't want to place restrictions on building connections! #LeadLAP
A3: When students and staff connect, learning accelerates. When we build relationship, when we care about each other, it makes everything else easier - especially when things get tough. #LeadLAP
A4: There is always a fear of investing time in any new school initiative that may fazed out or be forgotten about. Let me reassure you that Restorative Practices is not a going away. It’s a philosophy, a way of being, a way of life. #LeadLAP
A3 - For the frequent flyers it allows for them to change how the other students and teachers see them, they can change their story or "history" as a student at our school #leadlap
A4 Challenges to making space for restorative practices are similar to other positive changes.... breaking from norms, taking a step back and seeing through a different lense, forgetting our preconcived notions and the muting the naysayers https://t.co/by6BpBNmnW#leadlap
Unfortunately, he is in our oldest grade in our school. Unless I was able to connect him with someone outside of our school - which could be difficult. #LeadLAP
Indeed, and what's even deeper about what you've said is that I'll listen (as most people will) to you more if I feel you truly understand where I stand and am coming from in my thinking and emotions. #LeadLAP
A3: As the emotional needs of a human are met the "fight or flight" response is diminished. People don't feel like they have to be defensive. When this happens we can all be vunerable together in moving forward in whatever goals we have. #leadlap
A4: There is always a fear of investing time in any new school initiative that may fazed out or be forgotten about. Let me reassure you that Restorative Practices is not a going away. It’s a philosophy, a way of being, a way of life. #LeadLAP
A4: I think often Ts and school leaders feel overwhelmed. Stress changes our outlook and reaction to events and behavior. I think this can lead to negative interactions, and can cloud the ability to do our best work. Especially when dealing with challenging behavior. #LeadLAP
A4: Prioritization of resources, time, & sometimes just attitude/mindset can be barriers. Prioritizing health & wellness is something my Admin, T Peers, & our Parent Community are amazing at...I have worked at schools where this does not happen! #LeadLAP
Very true!! I saw this happen again and again when I taught in North Las Vegas, Nevada. We need to show those sweet kids that WE are enough for them and we’ve got their backs, always! #LeadLAP
A4. @ASCD developed this list of 10 strategies that can help students overcome barriers. I bet it doesn't surprise anyone here the 1st item is building relationships :-) #LeadLAP
A3: In the business world, customers generally don't buy products until they know, like, and trust the person or brand. The same thing is true in education spaces. When the students in a learning community know, like, and trust the staff, ANYTHING is possible! #LeadLAP
Q4: District policies that call for zero-tolerance and suspensions will always get in the way of restorative spaces. They push kids away from us and toward their problems and troubles. SEL needs airspace when we look at data. We also need to put resources into SEL. #Leadlap
A4: I think time, or the perception of time, is a HUGE road block. Teacher leaders WANT to carve out time for relationships and emotional connections, they've just got SO much other stuff on their plates. But without choosing that TIME, we risk broken plates. @careacter#leadlap
Agreed!! I struggle when people make comments to me that they shouldn't have to deal with this type of behavior. Every behavior is communication..we can either make it better or worse. #LeadLAP
A4: some staff are very reserved & consider their life away from school private. ✔️💥They don’t share their “whole self”. Some think it’s not” good “😫to be “too close” to students 🤨#leadlap
I LOVE the "being in it together" piece. This is participatory leadership. If I see you next to me and truly a part of what we're doing, then you have my respect. That respect is an undeniable currency of leadership. #LeadLAP
A4: The challenge that jumps most quickly to mind is the limitation of time. That's why I think it's helpful to focus on just one conversation, one experience, one connection at a time. It's a slow build. We invest when and where we can. #LeadLAP
A3: Emotional benefit include but not limited to - a boost in confidence, belonging, joy, and validation. Connection is at the center of our work. #LeadLAP
A4: I think time, or the perception of time, is a HUGE road block. Teacher leaders WANT to carve out time for relationships and emotional connections, they've just got SO much other stuff on their plates. But without choosing that TIME, we risk broken plates. @careacter#leadlap
It is incredibly hard - especially when the change is not your choice. You need strong connections to help you through the process. It is almost like the grief process. #LeadLAP
Perfectly stated. But also why restorative practices are so important. We need to push past the fear. Because where we meet in connection is where light enters us. #leadlap
Pretty sure we USED to do that in the home, but life has changed and people have gotten busier and engaged differently. The time is NOW for schools to fill in that empathy gap and help those littles (and bigs!) connect and BE well. #leadlap
Public Service Announcement: The truth has just been delivered by @Dale_Chu. We now return to our regularly scheduled #LeadLAP chat. Much respect to you Sir!

A4: Some barriers/challenges that keep us from creating space for Ss/staff connections are:
*assuming it's just the latest fad
*assuming it takes a lot of time
* assuming it isn't academic (but it is)
*fear of being vulnerable in front of those you lead
#leadlap
*change is scary
Looks like I'll be starting courses towards my Ed.S. (and credits for eventual license transfer to MN) in January @MSUMoorhead - and signed up for my first 50k trail race this morning too! Going to be a busy spring... #PrincipalsinAction#edugladiators#leadLAP
A4: I just don’t make it the priority it should be. I get busy. I get focused on paperwork. And then someone usually reminds me that it’s people that matter most. And then we refocus and regroup and make time and space for it. And things quickly get better. #LeadLAP
I've shared this experience. I held a Restorative Circle with teacher, student, parents, counselor, and a student supporter. Showing him you support him by going through the healing process WITH him. You got this! #leadLAP
A4: You will often here time as an excuse for not connecting; I would argue that time is a commodity we can choose to use to build one another up or tear one another down.
Use your time wisely! #LeadLAP
A3: So many Ss feel isolated outside of school - by intentionally creating spaces/opportunities for our Ss to connect at school, Ss learn the joys of connection: having a place to belong, people who care & being safe to be yourself/risk trying new things. #LeadLAP
A4) Building connections is difficult when there isn’t much support around you and a focus on performance. I’m lucky that this isn’t a problem at my school, but have felt this before. #LeadLAP
A4:One barrier is in the way teachers are prepared in higher ed.These spaces must be transformed so new teachers have a different vision for where education should be based on what we now know about learning, relationships, and motivation. #leadlap#endofaverage#2menandabook
I affirm you Joan with your sentiment. One of the greatest assets in my leadership over the years has been authenticity. It's garnered me more cooperation, collaboration, motivation, and productivity than any of my formal education including my master's degree. #LeadLAP
A4: I think we sometimes to take care of the caregivers as well. Compassion fatigue and the effects of student trauma on our staff is huge and has to be a priority. #leadlap
A4 lesson scheduling time constraints limit the flexibility of cross grade level lesson design collaboration ... #leadLAP creativity in collaboration comes from flexibility and opportunities for curiosity and investigation 💛☀️✏️⭐️#leadLAP
A3 Exposing vulnerability and showing oneself approachable and relatable = key to
1) being REAL and
2) providing a connection with one another--a sense of belonging. As a jagged puzzle piece, it's always nice to feel a sense of belonging--a valuable part to the whole. #leadlap
The beat we play is sometimes drowned out by those waves of vocalized doubt and it can be so painful. There are folks who do dig it and appreciate it. I’m one of them for you. My head spins, too, Pal! #knowingdoinggap#AndTheBandPlaysOn#LeadLAP
Q5- we're still working on this, focus at faculty meetings, individual coaching and LOTS of modeling and sharing of what others are doing to connect- provide the opportunities... Talk, Listen and try to help
#leadlap
A5: A few years back we had a staff member who wasn't willing to join in. So we asked her to run an activity! It gave her a chance to be a leader, and see the importance of building connections. #LeadLAP
EXACTLY! Which is why creating space for connection is so important. We can talk about our stress, and hold space for each other. Taryn, you are super insightful. Thank you for this. #leadlap
A4: I think often Ts and school leaders feel overwhelmed. Stress changes our outlook and reaction to events and behavior. I think this can lead to negative interactions, and can cloud the ability to do our best work. Especially when dealing with challenging behavior. #LeadLAP
A5 Whenever you encounter resistance, it's best to speak one-on-one with the person. Ask them their feelings on the initiative and have a true discussion, where you do more listening than talking! #LeadLAP!
A5. We try to see things from their perspective (thru a conversation). Connecting only happens when someone feels valued and has mutual respect for the work. It’s a process but one that is important. #LeadLAP
Very insightful, Courtney! School culture is HUGE for setting the tone of positive emotional healthy (for students and teachers!) If the focus is always pushed for passing the test, we begin to fail those who need life support instead. #LeadLAP
A3 As @StephenRCovey says seek first to understand before being understood. When we understand others we see behaviors through a completely different lense, we often find those behaviors are not personal, and have nothing to do with us #leadlap
A5 we don’t give up but we slow down and focus on making small gains with students and staff. We allow the culture of the building to help transition them to a deeper connection. #leadlap
A5: I believe leading by example is the first step. If you don’t practice what you preach, why would Ss or Ts buy in. It also serves as a model for those who it doesn’t necessarily come naturally to. Share the celebrations and growth that has been a result of connection! #LeadLAP
You know how tricky life is...mom is deciding to move him! I told her she needs to tell me asap on which school so we can do this exact thing. I have him for 6 more months! #LeadLAP
In reply to
@mreruchie, @paydroh74, @DrErnieMendes
A5: At my school site we have a Culture and Climate committee that creates and proposes exercises that include staff where they can express insecurities and ask questions about RP. Building trust with staff is imperative.#LeadLAP
A5: I’ve witnessed leaders blaming lack of time, or even claiming that staff &/or students don’t want to engage in sharing. I haven't found this to be true. Instead, I think it's the leaders who fear vulnerability & throw up these barriers to protect themselves. #LeadLAP
A4 we recently finished a big “look for the good” project, with lots of space and daily activities to build and share kindness and community. Now it’s over.... time to use the forward inertia to create space and time to keep it going. Otherwise, It’s lost so quickly. #LeadLAP
A5 The temptation is to bring out our "stick" when our Ts do not want to engage in these activities in which we know are essential, but if we expect them to meet our Ss where they are we must do the same for our Staff. Help them to see the value, treat with kindness etc.. #leadlap
A5: Our counselors help remind us that there is a reason behind that hesitation or resistance as we are naturally social beings. We need to be open to the possibility that making connections could be a huge challenge for some Ss. #leadlap
A4) I personally have a hard time building connections when I’m too focused on moving ahead or getting stuff done and I miss the “present” and those little moments of connections. (A Christmas Carol, we are reading in class, has been inspiring me about this) #ela#LeadLAP
A5: Sometimes it's about caring for and about the teachers as well. They need those connections, too, so that they don't isolate and feel alone. I loved @AllysonApsey's Zen Zone! So many ways to help them feel mindful, connected, and loved.
https://t.co/EiyvAxXlos#leadlap
A5: The first step has to be making sure that the 'why' is clear - if there is still resistance a 1:1 conversation w/ me or someone they trust can go a long way - especially if you ask them what they would need to feel comfortable/successful #leadlap
A1 In higher ed we use intrusive advising to connect with students and hold them accountable. We also allow the students to have unscheduled meetings with staff who are part of an academic and student life resource committee #LeadLap 👋🏾
So true, Beth! Compassion fatigue is brutal at times, especially when gone unnoticed or unmentioned. We constantly wear the scars of those who are hurting the most. Love that your school had made this awareness a priority! #LeadLAP
A5: Showing patience and respect consistently. Being vulnerable. Playing the long game. Often those most resistant to connection are the ones who need it most, but they're wearing full armour thanks to previous wounds. They're waiting us out to see if we're for real. #LeadLAP
I have to admit that the Qs today are providing me with some great ideas and things to think about in an area that is often not thought about in the same manner is curriculum, instruction and assessment. #LeadLAP
A5: A few years back we had a staff member who wasn't willing to join in. So we asked her to run an activity! It gave her a chance to be a leader, and see the importance of building connections. #LeadLAP
A5: Sometimes those are the ones who need to feel extra included. They need to be brought IN to the group & given a sense that they truly matter. Lots of Ts (& Ss) feel isolated and alone. Casual inclusion can feel like consolation at times. #LeadLAP
A4) People have trouble weaving it into the culture of the class or the learning. Social/restorative practices shouldn't be packaged as a separate 5-10 minute or 1-day thing. Restorative practices need to be married to a restorative curriculum and pedagogy #LEADlap
Kristina, you come from a place of goodness and light. This matters. Keep planting those seeds and know you are doing your best. Thank you for your heart. #leadlap
Agreed! And if every staff member can focus on just one conversation, one mediation and one connection you start building a community of Restorative leaders. #leadLAP
A4: The challenge that jumps most quickly to mind is the limitation of time. That's why I think it's helpful to focus on just one conversation, one experience, one connection at a time. It's a slow build. We invest when and where we can. #LeadLAP
A5 we all learn differently. We all know this. It’s how we work with this knowledge that is key. Providing opportunities to work alone may be just as important as opportunities to collaborate with others. Personally, I need both. I bet many of us do. #LeadLAP
A5 I think the first step is to go out of your way to show yourself relatable.
With parents, many times for me that was making house calls. I had to enter their world, at their convenience & help them see that WE are powerful team & need each other to help the Ss thrive! #leadlap
A4: Confidence is one -- but even more so is having the time and comfort in skillset to do so - having a full time psych (who is amazing) has been a HGE help in getting RJ practices up and running this year w/ kids and the Ts see him as an expert in the field #leadlap
A4: Fear of vulnerability. Sometimes, our struggle is what connects us. If Ts and Ss stay in that fixed mindset of "I can't" or worry about being perceived negatively, there is little space for growth and connection. #LeadLAP
A5: We start with the "why" without assumption. Many times it's not the desire to be disconnected, but the constraints of other commitments, interests, or external stress that keeps us bound and locked away.
Seek the why to discover the how. #LeadLAP
A3 Allowing students to have a safe space and be able to have conversations and create connections is a valuable asset to student success. It also helps with the potential anxieties that exist #LeadLap
A5:Always keep the door & invitation open for those who decline participation for whatever reason. Give the message you haven't given up hope that a mind may be changed & you will see them at an event, activity, meeting, etc. Remind them they are always welcome & valued! #LeadLAP
Yeah education is such a balance. I think that’s something we are beginning to realize more and more, but can still be hard when society looks at roles in schools only as a “job”. #LeadLAP
A5: I don't think there can be a choice in this. Resistance comes from lack of understanding. We must continue to share the why and people will begin to get it. Once we know better, we do better - Maya Angelou #LeadLaP
A4: I’ve witnessed leaders blaming lack of time, or even claiming that staff &/or students don’t want to engage in sharing. I haven't found this to be true. Instead, I think it's the leaders who fear vulnerability & throw up these barriers to protect themselves. #LeadLAP
A5: Well, we don’t make it optional. We become warm demanders by building relationships in various ways, we inquire about people as individuals, we offer emotional support while maintaining high standards. We show people we don’t give up on them. We must be relentless #LeadLAP
A6: Some would say the school is the heart of the community (especially in a small town)! If you have a strong culture of trust and connection inside the school, it will naturally flow outside the school! #LeadLAP
A6: Restorative practices allow for connection & healing to happen. Sometimes active healing happens, through our own processing & sharing. Sometimes passive healing happens, when we are healed from another’s story or journey. When we heal, we make our community safer. #LeadLAP
A6: The more we can help ALL students to be successful and productive, it's a WIN WIN for all! Restorative practices completely help to make that happen! #leadlap
A6: THIS testimonial from @JulieGB7 says it all. When kids can right a wrong instead of just being punished for it, magical things happen.
https://t.co/Y1fLo2nzKx#leadlap
I'm totally digging the cross-sector connection Tim between education and industry. We are all a brand. Some actively promote their brand more than others, but one thing is for sure. Thanks for @burgessdave and @burgess_shelley there's a pirate in all of our brands... #LeadLAP

A6: When we open the door to conversation & build trust in the process, we are strengthened to share our voice & spotlight the GOOD that is happening in our schools & community. This, in turn, promotes a culture of acceptance & welcome that continues beyond school walls. #LeadLAP
A6. Restorative practices make communities stronger as the students will become leaders of the community and the community in some instances will be involved with the restorative practices. #LeadLAP
A6: restorative practice represents the good fight against a fixed mindset, labels and writing our Ss and colleagues off based on their latest and loudest mistake! #leadlap
A5: We respect Ss and Ts who may be resistant to participating in "connection" activities, however, we always extend the invitation and stay positive. #LeadLAP
A3: Emotionally Ss need to feel safe. If they don't have a sense of safety and security, they cannot and will not be able to focus enough to grow academically. #LeadLAP
A6: RP taught in school help to build better understanding of our entire community. When we build better citizens, when we teach understanding, listening and empathy, we are doing the biggest part of our job - Creating our future #LeadLAP
A1-6: We also have to be sure that our practices and processes aren't an event...it has to be intentional and daily, not that one training we had... #LeadLAP
A5) I think you can't force a connection and sometimes people need to see something to believe it. When the outliers see the benefits of participation they buy into activities. Positive work is powerful and people want to be a part of something positive. #leadlap
A5) We see resistance to connection daily. 50% of our school has special needs, for some needs they genuinely can’t connect in the same way we naturally connect. For those Ss we provide steps twds making connections or provide a friend to minimize the pressure. #LeadLAP
A6. Community schools involve all of the aspects mentioned in the graphic below. I believe many States will move toward Community Schools in the next two decades to better meet the needs of all in their communities. #LeadLAP
A4: One barrier I see is the way many of our older schools were designed. My room for example has no windows (we have two small sky lights). Many also work in classrooms that are isolating such as portables. Many of these designs do not encourage shared spaces. #leadlap
A6b: Before I left my school, we had read Better Than Carrots or Sticks and were exploring Restorative Practices. Here's a post I wrote about introducing it to our staff. #leadlaphttps://t.co/3R4mtiSP9H
A4: Time is a constant barrier. For some vulnerability is also a barrier - some Ts are just afraid to look as if they don't know all the answers. One of the most powerful things you can say to a S is "I don't know; let's find out" #LeadLAP
You're right! Sometimes people try to make it about the program and skip the part about the people. It's the people that implement, refine, and sustain the program. That's the difference maker. #LeadLAP
A6: Restorative practices build better humans, large and small, that go back out into the community & then reach even more humans. It becomes how they live, react, and love instead of just a school program. #LeadLaP
It entails a robust communication system involving email, texts, 🐌mail, phone calls and social media alerts as it pertains to registration, Financial aid and other student services to ensure that students are aware of their support systems within the institution #LeadLap
A6: Restorative practices give dignity to every learner. Every person deserves to be respected, loved, and valued, no matter the title. In our community, relationships matter. YOU matter. #LeadLAP
Eddie hit the nail on the head. We all want to be happy. We all want to be a part of something. It's our human nature to belong. To love. To harm. To heal. To forgive. #leadlap
A5) I think you can't force a connection and sometimes people need to see something to believe it. When the outliers see the benefits of participation they buy into activities. Positive work is powerful and people want to be a part of something positive. #leadlap
A6: Restorative Practices builds relationships. Restorative Practice builds morale. Restorative Practices creates trust between students and staff, ultimately cultivating trust in the community.
A5: We also have to realize that we have to connect as they want to be connected...it's not all about us and our preference. Definitely stretched me as a leader, but so important. #LeadLAP
My girl comes home from college today so I have to step out a little early, but many thanks to @mreruchie and @paydroh74 for leading today’s discussion about restorative practices! Inspired by you all! #LeadLAP
A5: Thankfully we don't have a lot of staff resistant to activities that promote connection, so honestly Idk. Interested in other answers here. #LeadLAP
A6: Restorative Practices builds relationships. Restorative Practice builds morale. Restorative Practices creates trust between students and staff, ultimately cultivating trust in the community.
A6: Our kids are comm members who will one day be adults out in our world. W RPs we can help Ss develop confidence, identity and a positive sense of self. If they have that when they reach adulthood, they’re much more equipt to be productive & happy, which benefits all. #LeadLAP
A6: I think restorative practices in schools benefit the community because it includes the community! We are working to grow our network beyond our school site by partnering with neighborhood organizations and housing communities near us. #LeadLAP
A6: Empathy is shame’s greatest nemesis. Restorative practices allow us to help build empathy which changes how we react. Restorative practices tell students, I don’t agree with your behavior, but I love you, and I want to help you make this right. You belong here. #LeadLAP
A6: When the school is strong, the community is strong. There is a sense of pride and belonging in both a great school and a great community. When we create a sense of belonging, our community becomes stronger. #LeadLAP
Wow!! What an inspirational community in #LeadLAP!! Special thanks to @mreruchie & @paydroh74 for leading this wonderful discussion on work that is essential in our schools...and life. #RestorativePractices#tlap Please follow and add them to your PLN!
A6 Restorative Practices build and maintains relationships within a school community; it allows for mistakes to be recognized and repaired. RP teaches us all that we are better through communication together. #LeadLAP!
A6: When the school is strong, the community is strong. There is a sense of pride and belonging in both a great school and a great community. When we create a sense of belonging, our community becomes stronger. #LeadLAP
There's a circle practice where you have students/staff not in the space to participate, act as observers. They then share what they observed. Doesn't great learning happen from observing? #leadlap
When Ss or staff are reluctant to build connections, I believe we try to meet them where they are. Be open and available and give them time to know and feel when the opportunity is right. For many, listening and watching from afar can be as powerful as participating verbally.
That seems so far away!!! Thank you for your leadership! I have really taken some great ideas down and look forward to implementing them next week! #LeadLAP
Thanks to everyone in this awesome #LeadLAP crew for your thoughtful insights. Special thanks to @mreruchie and @paydroh74 for pushing our thinking. Have a great weekend!
Thank you for letting me drop in .... gotta go save the rest of the stuffed animals from a tragic end. Back to grands & Christmas decorating. #LeadLAP@restorativeguru
Thank you for the opportunity to collaborate with you all 💛❤️☀️🎈
Sorta makes me wonder how cities can build multi-million dollar schools without 1st considering how to better have it match the needs of the community. Times are changing/dollars will become less/silos will have to be broken down. #LeadLAP
A6: When the school is strong, the community is strong. There is a sense of pride and belonging in both a great school and a great community. When we create a sense of belonging, our community becomes stronger. #LeadLAP
A6: When restorative practices are used and taught to students and staff they they have the skill set to make an impact using these practices. We can change our communities for the better. We must! #leadlap
Good morning #leadLAP better late than never because my hobby is sleeping in on Saturdays 😉 Former TOSA back in the classroom with 6th graders who need #RestorativeJustice more than ever (Anaheim, CA)
Love this. I believe that our schools are the Corazon of the community. We gain trust from the community when the community knows their students trust their schools. #leadLAP
A6: Some would say the school is the heart of the community (especially in a small town)! If you have a strong culture of trust and connection inside the school, it will naturally flow outside the school! #LeadLAP
Thank you @paydroh74 & @mreruchie for a great chat! RP is part of a conversation we all need to keep having on behalf of our students and communities! #LeadLAP!
What an awesome chat to fire me up for the weekend! Thank you so much for leading the conversation, @mreruchie and @paydroh74 and to the whole #LeadLAP crew for your ideas!
One hundred percent! Living in an area that used to be booming w/ farming & textile industries, we are now a commuter town with folks driving to the city to work. Imagine if Ss felt pride and belonging and came back to start their business here. Economy would be sparked. #LeadLAP
Indeed being embedded as where I find a significant portion of my leadership efforts and contributions at. It's being able to "light" a path and "paint" a picture of how it all can fit together that is one of our greatest opportunities as leaders. #LeadLAP
A6 We are all human &humans desire to be emotionally connected, trusted& valued.
RP should be embedded in everything we do as humans--not just in the school system. It's taking time to build a culture of trust; and, to me, that alone is a strong foundation for any group. #leadlap
Agreed! The kids in our community are our most valuable resource. Our kids bring the knowledge, culture, and foundations for learning. Where can we find this community wealth? IN OUR SCHOOLS! This definitely means our schools are the beating heart of our communities. #leadlap
What an awesome chat to fire me up for the weekend! Thank you so much for leading the conversation, @mreruchie and @paydroh74 and to the whole #LeadLAP crew for your ideas!
