Welcome and thank you for joining us! Our topic this evening will be digital citizenship. Please take a moment and introduce yourself. Tell us your name, where you teach and what you teach and why you are interested in digital citizenship. Include the hashtag #rcstechchat
My name is Caroline Huff and I am the ITC at Riverdale HS. I’m excited to be with you this evening along with my awesome co host-Erin Alvarado. #rcstechchat
Scot Keasler, Smyrna High School, Drivers Ed/Weightlifting. I'm interested in digital citizenship because I'm concerned about things HS students are putting online and I want to know how to educate them about the dangers. #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat My name is Martin Binhammer. I currently teach Biology and Physical Science at Holloway High School. I'm very interested in digital citizenship as I love the idea of a blended classroom and more research-based lessons.
Question 1: How do you define digital citizenship? Remember to tweet your answers with A1 formatting and to include the hashtag #rcstechchat on all of your responses tonight.
A1: There is so much to digital citizenship. I love this graphic to explain it to my students! Two of my favorites are respect and credibility. #rcstechchat
A1 I would define digital citizenship as safe and responsible practices using social media. Also respectful discourse and checking facts before posting, tweeting, etc. #rcstechchat
A1: the awareness of what you post and follow online and understanding that it never goes away. Being a citizen online just as you would hope to be in the real world #RCSTechChat
A1. The ability of individuals, groups and communities to take appropriate actions toward respectful interaction between one another, respect for #rcstechchat
I agree! There is so much and just like our students are taught how to be a good citizen in social studies, they need to be taught early on how to be a responsible citizen online. It is equally as important I think! #rcstechchat
A1: There is so much to digital citizenship. I love this graphic to explain it to my students! Two of my favorites are respect and credibility. #rcstechchat
A1: Not long ago, I thought digital citizenship was exclusive of citizenship. In 2018, they are one in the same. There is only slightly different etiquette/protocols for exhibiting proper digital citizenship. The internet IS real life. #rcstechchat
Question 2: What specific strategies or lessons do you use to teach DC in your classroom? If you’ve never taught about DC in your classroom, how could you teach it? #rcstechchat
A2: I stress credible sources and give examples of both credible and not so credible sources before our first research project. I am big on what’s your brand? I also have an entire presentation on what is your brand. #rcstechchat
A2: In high school you could have students research what NOT to do based on things that have already happened. Learn from other's mistakes. #rcstechchat
A2: I haven’t ever taught it but it’s definitely necessary to have “rules” in tact- students need to know what’s acceptable/right/wrong when posting online (especially for a classroom activity) #RCSTechChat
A2- @CommonSense has a lot of valuable resources if you need a place to start! I love what @brainpop has as well. But honestly just starting to have honest and open conversations with students has been impactful as well. #rcstechchat
In first grade my students are pretty limited to sites in which they can access, but we do talk about not believing everything that's on the internet. That's really as far as I've gone with DC. #rcstechchat
A1- defined just the same as citizenship in general. How do you treat yourself and others? With the only exception...written print is FOREVER! Think before you speak AND type! #rcstechchat
A2–I have never taught digital citizenship, but in the past couple months, half of my CDC class has gotten a cell phone. At the middle school level (or any level) probably knowing about the dangers of meeting people online would be important. #RCSTechChat
A2 I haven't taught about DC in my classroom yet but I would like to start using twitter chats next year for projects in stats class. Before I do that I will need to lay out guidelines and expectations for discourse. Hoping to get some ideas tonight! #rcstechchat
We have a writing lab for our sixth-grade writing classes, and start the year by reviewing on-line etiquette. We discuss what is appropriate to share in a classroom setting, even with friends. We haven't used a formal program, though. #rcstechchat
A2: I'm talking a lot about data privacy with my 3-5 graders. They were shocked to find out how Facebook and social media make money. We've also been talking about Zuckerberg's testimony to Congress. #rcstechchat
A2-continued. If anyone on here teaches lower grades- The SROs in our schools have a video and some resources geared toward the little kiddos and I have used that at LPS and they love it! Its a great place to start with 5 year olds. #rcstechchat
A2: I honestly have not taught too much about it in my class, but we use the internet/apps SO much that I probably need to focus more on it. My 6th graders do well overall, but they are limited to what they access in class. #RCSTechChat
A2: A2: I didn’t begin taking full advantage of online resources until about Nov. This allowed me to ease in & build rapport/trust w/ my kids. When we started, we signed contracts & made expectations. Just like sports, we practiced until “game day.” #RCSTechChat
A2- @brainpop has been my go to. Admittedly it isn’t too much trouble in lower elementary, but there will be random cases. Build culture and expectations with NO EXCEPTIONS. Abuse it and lose it. No one has lost it yet 😊 #rcstechchat
A2: We're also talking about YouTube safety. YouTube stars are the new rockstars. 8 year olds are starting channels with no supervision. We've been talking about the risks of those behaviors. We need to do more to educate parents. #rcstechchat
A2. The lesson I've used for this involves a research paper I have my students complete about genetic engineering. Since so much of scientific research depends on citation of credible sources it is perfect to discuss what are best practices for determining sources #rcstechchat
A2 continued: that are appropriate and what you can use and not use. Since the topic is interesting the students really pay attention to what I will accept and not accept #rcstechchat
A2 I haven't taught about DC in my classroom yet but I would like to start using twitter chats next year for projects in stats class. Before I do that I will need to lay out guidelines and expectations for discourse. Hoping to get some ideas tonight! #rcstechchat
A2: Other than trying to get students to understand appropriate times to be on devices, I don’t know that I’ve spent time teaching digital citizenship. I’m not sure how it would fit into the Algebra 2 curriculum. #RCSTechChat
Question 3: What is one of your favorite resources that you use to teach DC or that you use to learn more about DC? If you’ve never taught DC, where have you heard about it? #rcstechchat
I am so glad you mentioned this! I had a close friend who had NO IDEA her child had a youtube channel and random followers from all over. It is so easy for kids to put themselves out into the world now! #rcstechchat
A2: We're also talking about YouTube safety. YouTube stars are the new rockstars. 8 year olds are starting channels with no supervision. We've been talking about the risks of those behaviors. We need to do more to educate parents. #rcstechchat
A2: Other than trying to get students to understand appropriate times to be on devices, I don’t know that I’ve spent time teaching digital citizenship. I’m not sure how it would fit into the Algebra 2 curriculum. #RCSTechChat
A3: I am constantly weaving in that what you put out there in cyberspace is forever and in some cases, people’s first impressions of them. This is a graphic I use to begin the discussion. We all have a brand! I use current events too. #rcstechchat
A3 ~ Since I've never really taught DC, I don't have any sites or resources that I've used. I'd love to hear about some if anything for my own kids. I honestly have only heard DC mentioned on blogs. #rcstechchat
A3: never taught it before but I'm learning from others on here that there are some websites out there to help. Plus just talking with students about real life stories would be a good place to start. #RCSTechChat
A3: I’ve never taught it but just saw some resources that @mylifeasatechie wrote earlier that I’ll check out. I think the goal is to convince students the gravity of everything they post/retweet or have access to and how it effects them #RCSTechChat
A3 ~ Since I've never really taught DC, I don't have any sites or resources that I've used. I'd love to hear about some if anything for my own kids. I honestly have only heard DC mentioned on blogs. #rcstechchat
I have never taught DC in my classroom. With 2nd grade students, I am able to monitor their internet usage pretty closely. However, teaching the "rules" are always a necessary thing to do. I will definitely look into the brainpop lesson
#RCSTechChat
I fully support kids having their own channels IF it is under parent managed family account. YouTube has great strategies to help parents manage their kids usage and channels. #RCSTechChat
A3: It was required to take a course on DC at MTSU. My professor really opened my eyes to ways to use the web & keep it safe. We use the Remind App. Parents, students and teachers love it. I’m interested in learning more about ways to teach it #RCSTechChat
I think there is a Brainpop on it I’ve shown. I think maybe the school tech coach has other resources on digital citizenship, but I haven’t looked up much on it.#RCSTechChat
I also think Ss need to know what hashtags are and what they do. #Hastag is such a common word and they hashtag so many things but after teaching a class recently to 5th graders I found that only about 2 students in each class knew what they did once added to a photo #rcstechchat
A2: our tech coach is helpful with suggestions for teaching appropriate use of tech, and our librarian stresses the need to determine credibility of on-line sources. #rcstechchat
A3- I will be checking out @CommonSense. That is why this chat matters! Love finding out new resources that fit right along with standards. #rcstechchat
The Fortnite game is SUPER popular with everyone right now. This is an excellent time to discuss DC with students - especially since it's a live game. #RCSTechChat
A3 contd: I take the, let’s have an honest conversation about using the internet/apps/social media. I think it’s important for my 7th graders to be able to talk about it and come up with their own strategies and rules for their DC #RCSTechChat
A3 I like the branding graphic as an intro. I may use it when I start info on DC next school year. And..Michael Kors, Nike, McDonalds, and Coach. :) #rcstechchat
A3: @CommonSense Digital Citizenship lessons are the gold standard IMO for quality lessons. Beyond that, @danahboyd's 'it's complicated' is essential reading for understanding the social media usage of middle and high school students. #rcstechchat
A3- I will be checking out @CommonSense. That is why this chat matters! Love finding out new resources that fit right along with standards. #rcstechchat
A3. The best resource for discussing DC is our tech coaches. Last year at Smyrna middle I appreciated the help of Stephanie Ellliot coming back to discuss it with students. With the information I gained from her I took it with me to high school. #rcstechchat
Q4: How do you think we as adults see and use social media differently from our students? How can we use our perspective to teach our students to be tech savvy? #rcstechchat
A4: For me, social media is to keep up with friends and family and what’s going on in the world. For students, it is their truth, their self esteem and their identity. I use my life experience to model that they are so much more than how many likes they get. #rcstechchat
A4 I know that I only use Twitter in a professional sense, but Ss use social media as another means to hang out with their friends. It's our job to make sure they are using it in the safest way possible. #RCSTechChat
A4: As adults we think about our jobs and families. We have hindsight. This is a tough one to teach because sometimes you just learn from mistakes unfortunately. Seeing what others have done helps. #rcstechchat
I use my limited social media to share pictures, that's pretty much it. I want my students to know that once you post a picture, It can't be unseen or deleted. Those on the whim moments and pictures can haunt you forever. Be smart with what you post! #rcstechchat
A:4. I use it to see friends baby photos vacation pictures cute pets! Students seem to care more about how many likes they receive! It seems to be more self-esteem driven!
#RCSTechChat
A4- As adults, we see the whole picture and the dangers of posting students posting/sharing something that is personal. Once the post, picture is "out there" it can never be taken back. Words are hurtful and students can be impulsive.
#RCSTechChat
A4- I always try to tell my students that not everything that is posted on social media is the truth. They do not quite understand that their is a lot of "fakeness" on social media and to be careful. #rcstechchat
I fully believe this is one reason this generation has self esteem problems. They would be much more kind to each other if they couldn't hide behind a screen. If they had to see the hurt of their words. #rcstechchat
A4: it’s all in what you use it for and whether you “rely” on it or not. It should be a TOOL, not a necessity or something you put your soul into #RCSTechChat
A4: I think that while adults use social media to post updates about their lives, celebrate milestones, and comment on current events, kids use it more for in-the-moment, person-to-person communication. And they prefer Snapchat. #RCSTechChat
A4-Unfortunately all to often I think students see it as a way to gain popularity and get liked. I would like to think that "most" adults use it as a way to stay connected, and get information...but we all have that one friend that could use DC right?....lol #rcstechchat
A4: at my school, we use social media to keep in contact and share info during the school day, and to maintain a sense of community outside of achool. Out of school, I use it to keep up with friends and family #rcstechchat
A4: I don't think most adults model the responsible use of social media very well. Overuse is a big problem. Social media is designed to be addictive to generate clicks/views. Those clicks/view are $ for FB, Twitter, etc. We need more awareness on that topic. #rcstechchat
A4: I think that while adults use social media to post updates about their lives, celebrate milestones, and comment on current events, kids use it more for in-the-moment, person-to-person communication. And they prefer Snapchat. #RCSTechChat
A4. I think as adults we grew up learning about technology first hand instead of it being a given. We have a certain level of maturity with technology that teenagers now don't have a clue with. Isn't not that we have to teach them to be savvy with it #rcstechchat
A4. I think we need to teach them about the consequences and the long term ramifications associated with having that constant "word vomit" published online. #RCSTechChat
A4) Students lives often times revolve around social media - sad but true. A lot of adults or people they look up to, have set a poor example.
#RCSTechChat
A4: however, many of my students are basing their lives on their media presence, and are interacting with people they don't know. Scary stuff! #rcstechchat
A4- In all honesty, if adults aren’t careful, there isn’t much difference between them and children on social media. Looking for likes and self esteem boosts. WE HAVE to show them proper usage while believing what we are teaching. #rcstechchat
A4- In all honesty, if adults aren’t careful, there isn’t much difference between them and children on social media. Looking for likes and self esteem boosts. WE HAVE to show them proper usage while believing what we are teaching. #rcstechchat
Q5: With the increase in phishing emails, fake social media profiles, and anonymous chat apps, what strategies could we use to better educate our students on protecting their personal information and staying safe online? #rcstechchat
A4: It is really easy to generalize with this question. Our decisions about how different age groups use technology need to be driven by data. #rcstechchat
A4 I would like to think most adults, but certainly not all, think a little bit more before they post something. Like who will see this, could this upset some people, etc. I think teens have a tendency to post first, think after. #rcstechchat
A5: We go over what is really in those social media agreements we all click "I agree" to. Also, I have a volunteer come up and I show how easily I can find them and their family on google. (I hide the screen and have them type in their parent's name). #rcstechchat
A5 ~ None of my first graders have social media that I'm aware of, so I am going to answer this as a parent. Don't post anything you wouldn't want me or your father to see. Ask yourself, would we approve? #RCSTechChat
A5: The same way that we teachers are told, we should tell them to keep accounts private. No reason not to have the ability to monitor who sees what. And encourage them to dig deeper to ensure accounts they follow are legitimate sources #RCSTechChat
A5-Ooohh I like this question. But I am having the hardest time answering it. I think making them aware of real life examples so that they can see them is important. Its one thing to tell them, but I think there is value in showing them real life examples. #rcstechchat
A5 Spread the word as much as possible. Show them how easy it is to be duped online. I used to show them the Tree Octopus website and have them decide if it was real or fake. Sadly, many of them were convinced it was real :-( #RCSTechChat
A5: As a child is there really ever a time to give out personal info online? They need to know the risks based on stories that have been in the news, once again to learn from other's mistakes. #RCSTechChat
Just keep reminding them that what you post does not go away and help them become more aware of the fact that there are people who do steal info, pictures etc. and to keep up with privacy settings.#rcstechchat
True. And I would also argue that there is a responsibility of the creators/admins of social media tools in the design and maintenance of their platforms. In social media, you are the product, not the customer. We need a deeper examination of our data privacy rights. #rcstechchat
A5- the saying, "if it's too good to be true, it probably is." If students would think first, "Do I want everyone to know this?" It seems they would be able to avoid a lot of embarrassment and heartache.
#RCSTechChat
My absolute favorite is the fake tan website! Y'all the kids in lower grades fall for it every time! It looks legit..and then I discuss how important it is not to believe everything you see! #rcstechchat
A5 Spread the word as much as possible. Show them how easy it is to be duped online. I used to show them the Tree Octopus website and have them decide if it was real or fake. Sadly, many of them were convinced it was real :-( #RCSTechChat
A5: teach them about keeping accounts private and the ways to do that. How to adjust settings on social media to protect privacy. How to spot fake accounts. #rcstechchat
Our SRO and our tech coach took the kids through a demo of how easy it is to learn a LOT about them, wven when they think they're on a secure site and being "careful". #rcstechchat
A5. I would think that an open discussion about the use of such apps is the best way. Questioning pointed toward why there is a need for anonymity and what motives users have for using such techniques and apps are needed. #rcstechchat
A5 continued: I also believe we need to discuss how long it actually takes to recover your identity once personal information is lost and used. #rcstechchat
A5- I am all for a DC night for parents. It always begins in the home where the devices are being bought. As the old saying goes, when you know better you DO better. Being informed changes a lot! #rcstechchat
A4: I feel like social media is a game for students—how many likes can you get, how many followers, etc. They don’t necessarily see the repercussions of their actions like (most) adults do. #RCSTechChat
A5 Just keep reminding them that what you post does not go away and help them become more aware of the fact that there are people who do steal info, pictures etc. and to keep up with privacy settings.#rcstechchat
A5- We should definitely teach students to keep accounts private. I think they should hear real stories of this happening. My SRO officer comes into classrooms and talks about true stories of these things, and it seems to resonates with them. #RCSTechChat

I ask my students- "would you have them in your house sitting on the couch right by you?" If no, why are you giving your personal information (the keys to your house). #rcstechchat
Q6: How do you encourage your students to share positive info like interests, skills, etc. online or encourage them to connect globally and use their voices to make a difference in the world? In other words, how to we harness this for good? #rcstechchat
A5: Use your brain! Don’t give info that you don’t want strangers to have. Just because they’re “friends” on the internet does not make them close enough to get your #, address, etc. Also, I’ve asked many students this q: “would it make me/mama/daddy proud?” #RCSTechChat
Just wanted to remind everyone that it is very important to complete the form at the end before logging off. Also please follow each other on Twitter! Grow your #PLN! #rcstechchat
A6: We have a French teacher that does Skype field trips with a classroom in France. Also, I think it's extremely important that I'm a good role model. I make sure that everything I put up is positive, helpful, and true. #rcstechchat
Research shows that adults do the same thing with their social media use. Students just don't always have the immediate consequences for their online behavior. #rcstechchat
Oh I get on my soapbox on this one! They are not your friend if you don't know them! They are a friends 2nd cousin twice removed! You've never met them! #rcstechchat
A6- Show them examples of how it's been used for the good. Inspire them, motivate them...give them projects to harness the good. Lots of examples!!! #rcstechchat
A6 I think if you practice socratic seminar in the classroom, that would be a good way to transition into the digital space. Remind them of the etiquette rules in person & online. #RCSTechChat
My father-in-law just told me about a RCS student who was shot today because he was lured to a vacant lot wanting to by a cell phone off digitial platform. This techchat is real business and very timely. #rcstechchat
A6 ~ Well when we search topics in my class, I make sure the topics the students want to research are appropriate and related to our standards. We were learning about inventors and they had a TON of questions, so together we searched for the answers. #rcstechchat
A6: I use my classroom Twitter and Instagram (follow me @sixthgradescientists 🙃) as examples. It is open to the public & I have to represent myself, family, workplace, etc. with class and dignity. Using myself as an example is an eye-opener. #RCSTechChat
A6- Would you want someone to say that to you or about you? If the answer is no, then you should not make that comment. Spend your time making a positive difference in the lives of others.
#RCSTechChat
A6: They need to see it modeled by teachers and adults. We should use it at school as much as possible in positive ways since it's not going away and it's a part of life now. #RCSTechChat
I think we can encourage them to do this when we let them know that future colleges, employers, and friends will see these post and not that they should be "fake" but you certainly want to make a good impression. #rcstechchat
A6- One thing that I want to show my students is skyping to other students in other countries during a lesson. My awesome tech coach @smithstrcs has done this at our school! I think this is a great way to get them more connected on a global positive level. #RCSTechChat
A6: our students can share thei writing they do in class with others, and we try to find sites wherevthey can share their writing on appropriate websites, but it is hard to find sites you can trust! #rcstechchat
A6: Our principal writes us encouraging notes. Our entire grade level has theirs out for anyone to see. I have SO many kids who constantly notice ask me about it. I also have a “positive post” board. They grab sticky notes & write encouragements. It starts with me. #RCSTechChat
A6: share positive stories! Encourage them to post positive helpful comments and share knowlegdge on legitimate sites that they're interested in. I love connecting with professionals in my field for ideas, inspiration, etc!
#rcstechchat
A6: I think you make an example out of the YouTube stars that have branded themselves well and produce quality content. We have to look critically at their brands and discuss the content of the work. Students show a lot of insight during these discussions. #rcstechchat
A6: Show them the power of positivity online- like the recent students standing up to gun violence, to show them the power of the internet in a good way! #RCSTechChat
A6- We just keep honest discussion constantly in our searches, emails, game time, etc. I am very open about what can happen and what’s appropriate. This opens everyone’s eyes to keep watch. Awareness is key #rcstechchat
A6. At HHS I have a period dedicated to mentoring 9 students. Several are seniors the ability to help them prepare for college. Some of our discussions involve college readiness to linkedin profiles to help them attain business continues for future careers #rcstechchat
A6: Students need to know how to identify reliable sources, and we should encourage them to use digital applications that enable them to create. #RCSTechChat
It just hit me. There are buddy benches. What if we had our students use social media in that manner to build people up and be there for one another. What a different place social media and our world would be! #rcstechchat
It just hit me. There are buddy benches. What if we had our students use social media in that manner to build people up and be there for one another. What a different place social media and our world would be! #rcstechchat
Thank you guys so much for joining in tonight! I feel like this topic is so important for our youth today! Please tell your teacher friends to mark their calendars for next week's chat hosted by me and @tcarey98! Don't log off until you complete the form! #rcstechchat
A6: I do try to be very careful with my own posts, and I explain to my students that I do so because " what you put on-line is available to everyone onthe universe forever". (My version of, "Would you want to see this in the DNJ by your name?"#rcstechchat
Here are the remaining dates in this years #rcstechchat . All chats after May 8th will go towards next years PD credits. Mark your calendars and make sure to join in!!
