#resiliencechat Tidbit: President Trump addressed education policy in his 2019 State of the Union speech in one 16-word sentence: “To help support working parents, the time has come to pass school choice for America’s children.”
A1- Honestly, I am not a fan of this administrations sonI was hoping it would not be mentioned as what seems to be mentioned is ultimately turned into a political mess! #resiliencechat
I also didn't expect to hear anything and kind of cringe at whatever this current administrations says about everything - especially kids & education #resiliencechat
However, it would be nice to mention funding for teacher retention and a way to help lift poor performing schools up and help all schools perform at high levels. #resiliencechat
I didn't notice. I don't trust anything I hear from him, but school choice in particular an example of something that can be a reasonable option for some until it's turned into a nefarious agenda. #ResilienceChat
A2: $$$$$$. Teachers in public schools are underpaid, districts underfunded and private schools/colleges getting more expensive. We need to rethink our priorities and change the system so all Ss have quality education & opportunities #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat A2: I would love to see issues of funding, teacher training & retention, issues of equity to be discussed. Also how to address the issues facing both rural educators and urban educators
A2- Right now for me it’s addressing the whole child while still meeting standards that are being tested by high stakes testing. I am finding some great resources and chats on engagement that will result in high achievement yet also allow kids to lead! #resiliencechat
I join these conversations to talk up family engagement, so certainly that. Also: the need for strong media literacy and civics education. #ResilienceChat A2
A3: if we truly want what is best for kids, we’d have resources to provide facilities, well compensated Ts, and appropriate tools to prepare kids for their future, not to just pass a test #resiliencechat
A3c: we’d also banish antequated practices that exist just because they’ve been there forever. Times change and education needs to adapt, not remain in the distant past #resiliencechat
A3 We have to meet kids where they are, make them feel safe, and then teach them academics. It is impossible for kids to reach their full potential if basic needs are not met. #resiliencechat
A2) I’m all about assessment right now. I want the practice of assessment to inform learning in real-time. Assessments are not just (or even at all?) for the ends of units. They move us towards ends, which really are just new beginnings themselves. #resiliencechat

A3) De-emphasize grades. What do you want students to be able to DO after they’ve learned from you? If the answers is “get an A”, then give them the A and move on. How is a kid changed from being in your class? Grades have nothing to do with that. #resiliencechat

We are failing because of standardized tests compared to other nations. I have witnessed other countries’ schools and connected with educators around the world. There are so many things that make our schools great that are not measured on a standardized test. #resiliencechat
Make school really work for everyone who attends. Many kids are overlooked or go through the motions.
And I said "who attends," because education goes beyond school. My wand would everyone an equitable and excellent education that inspires, in whatever setting. #ResilienceChat
Yes, I often talk about "ghost-students"--those that just cruise through under the radar without much notice--yet deserve to be noticed! #resiliencechat
A prof told us in the mid 80’s, ‘In the 50’s if your grad’d in the top 20% there was 80% chance you’d teach. Today if you’re in top 50%, there’s 80% chance you won’t. Let’s fix that somehow. #resiliencechat

I wish more students were represented in #resiliencechat. I would like to hear what issues in education are most important to them. Any students out there who want to chime in??? #resiliencechat

A6 So many things, but make these young humans whole by eliminating the baggage they come with and showing them their great potential and the value of knowledge. #resiliencechat
I want the way education is funded to change, to be distributed more equitably, so schools in poor areas can't be distinguished from schools in rich areas.
A6 I would create a school for kids like Kid O who need special technology to communicate. I would hire therapists who would be interested in feldenkrais and yoga instead of run of the mill physical and occupational therapy. #resiliencechat
According to my 16 year old making learning relevant to what they will need in life after high school is very important. Apparently memorizing Greek and Latin roots is not relevant to her. #resiliencechat
To continue, understanding Greek and Latin roots is important, making it relevant to kids may be the more important. Give kids the why!! #resiliencechat
I took three years of Latin! Was just helping our 9th-grade daughter last night with her course selection for next year, and noted how Greek and Roman history formed the foundation of Western civilization. It was my way of saying: Find time for this at some point. #ResilienceChat
Students still in middle or high school or college students studying teaching? Or both? I know some teachers have recruited students on here but it takes some planning. #ResilienceChat
