Let’s start with some questions:
What was the most fun you’ve ever had coding?
Do you have any suggestions for a fun team coding activity?
What’s an underrated joy of developing software in general?
I’ve had a few late nights where I was riffing on an idea that came to me and I just had to give it a whirl before sleep.
You have to be careful to know when to run with inspiration and when to cool your jets and get some sleep though. #DevDiscuss

I love my job, but the most fun I have coding is hacking together ridiculous things with my Raspberry Pi. It's so gratifying to see code come to life in a physical way... #DevDiscuss
Where I work they have an annual Hackathon (during work hours 🔥) which is a great way to mix up your team. You could hack on anything with anyone, doesn't even have to be another developer on the team. This has since expanded to a monthly innovation day. #DevDiscuss
I always really enjoy the first time I get something new to work. New technology, concept, project, it doesn’t matter. So getting the github api to work with observable in angular was fun. Get gatsby images through GraphQL was fun. #devdiscuss

The most fun I've ever had coding was when I was creating a discord music bot. While I was testing it, my friends would come in and blast funny songs. 😂
Bringing my friends together with my projects always makes coding a blast for me. #devdiscuss

The late nights I have spent with my team hacking away on something are by far some of my most memorable moments! Everyone is all in, beer in hand, and you are just getting shit done! #DevDiscuss
Well this is a hard question #DevDiscuss... I guess I have my brain filled with memories that I can't go back more than the past three weeks where I've been having tons of fun learning WordPress theme/plugin dev + React 😂

"Underrated joy of developing software in general?" My goodness, I love debugging. I LOVE it when someone brings me an "it's broken" thing and then I'm off like a detective. #devdiscuss
Pair programming for sure. Some don't like it because it's usually one person driving (keyboard), but if you're using @code, Live Share, lets both of you drive. I encourage people to try it for pair programming even if they use another editor normally. #DevDiscuss
Tonight's #DevDiscuss is depressing the heck out of me.
The worst part of burnout has been that coding isn't fun anymore. No more thrill of discovery, no more joy of creating something from nothing.
No more triumphantly screaming "Who's the smartest bitch in all the land!"

I’ve had not so great experiences with hackathons. But I think it’s really fun to gather your time in front of a white board and brainstorm together on designing a new solution. You feel so smart and engaged and it’s just fun! #DevDiscuss
Most fun I ever had coding is just working on my personal projects. Building things that make me smile much more than my usual projects since they make me excited to play around with my code. #DevDiscuss
😕 Im nearly finished with a #DEVcommunity post about my burnout story. It happened about 6 months ago I was a completely different person. My coworkers helped pull me out of it. If you need a sounding board or whatever feel free to reach out! My DMs are open! #DevDiscuss 🤗
I had a previous role where we had work hackathons that were really just an excuse to have us work through the weekend to rapid prototype potential projects for clients. Kind of ruined it for me :( #DevDiscuss
the most fun ive had coding in a while is honestly my side project @HealthsomeApp tbh. it gave me that "wow i can really just dive in and build whatever i want" feeling that ive been missing 💖 #devdiscuss

I look forward to reading that! It’s such a struggle to balance driving your career forward and keeping up with new technology against having a life away from work. I wish there were more hours in a day. #DevDiscuss
I was there when I started out, coding alone for 3 months. It can be isolating. Then I found a team and never looked back. I hope you find a great one, one day, its amazing what surrounding yourself with good people will do #DevDiscuss
also i think part of it is i haven't built something entirely from scratch just because i wanted to like...ever. most things i built entirely on my own were for University assignments. #DevDiscuss
Back in 2015 I was building a social network for developers. I streamed it live when "watching people code" was a new concept.
It was fun because I enjoyed coding the project, but I also enjoyed having conversations. It's like pair programming with the community.

Actually... last project I enjoyed as much as this one was a JS project (which I took without having any JS experience). So I guess I just love hacking my way through knowledge. #DevDiscuss
One of the most fun experiences I have ever had coding, or rather hacking 😉, was doing my first CTF! I HIGHLY recommend doing one if you are interested, not only do you learn something but you become must more aware of code security #DevDiscuss
I also think an underrated joy of coding is just that... We can literally build whatever we want!!! How cool is that?! I know I had probably started to just take that for granted #DevDiscuss
Most fun? Often the most painful too! 🧐
Over 32 years:
- Unpaid personal project: design & building new programming language from scratch, mostly written in itself.
- Working on Skate / Skate 2 / BF games at EA.
- Working on Unix kernels and TCP/IP stacks at SCO.
#DevDiscuss
Fixing bugs or issues is usually really fun, of course first comes the pain and the "why did I choose this career?!", but once you find the solution/fix, oh my, best feeling ever!
#DevDiscuss
OSS is great. You can literally jump into any project and start contributing or learning what the code does. I don't think that exists in many professions.
"Oh hey there, I see you're performing heart surgery... mind if we pair? I'm still learning." #devdiscuss
HERE is a blog post about the CTF I did. I did it free through a meetup, they had a free trial over the holidays, maybe they will do another free one again sometime. https://t.co/dnaUSxP8qS#DevDiscuss
The most fun I've had coding is when I started learning d3. The match nerd in me loved building graphs with code! It's been the most satisfied I've been in awhile!

Wanted to be productive with some friends over the weekend and delivered an Android application to aid the verbally impaired.
Called up a speech-language pathologist and all that stuff to make sure we’re parsing audio correctly.
All that in 50 hours, never again 😂😩 #DevDiscuss

I was also burned out. I wrote a post about things I learned about going from remote to an office and the last bullet point was "Staying remote is not a higher priority than mental health"...this was due to heavy burnout and depression
#DevDiscuss
Definitely an underrated joy is just you forcing a machine to do what you want. I think any amount of programming regardless of bugs is always inherently magical. #devdiscuss

Worked w/ a coworker on a VBA script in Excel, building schedules based on call volume at this call center. Yawn, right? Except my coworker taught me how to use heuristics to find optimal sets based on employee requests - was super cool and blew my mind at the time.

As someone with a chronic illness, knowing this app will help me and other people too is just so fun and exciting!!! There's something unique about building a thing to help people. #DevDiscuss
An underrated joy of developing? I don't know. Being able to do silly stuff just because you can. For example, I answer every request to my blog with an extra HTTP header with a URL to a picture of my dog.
"curl -I https://t.co/P7ANP7CHVW" and you'll see it #devdiscuss

One of the only times I worked "overtime" was completely voluntary. I was supposed to write out instructions on how to build something and I had so much fun playing with @vuejs that I ended up creating a prototype instead.
#DevDiscuss
Underrated joy - getting disparate systems to talk to each other to create workflows or functionality that someone else may not have done before, even if it's super super niche. Might just be #InternetPlumbing, but so cool to see when everything fits together.

I learned a lot both good and bad. So I’m grateful for that! But yes, I can look back and be less angry about stuff like this now that it’s years later. #DevDiscuss
A fun team coding activity might be a game similar to something I saw Kyle Hanagami do in a YouTube video. It is called grooves where dancers start with something basic then they modify it based on what others tell you to do. Devs could do something similar with code #DevDiscuss
Most fun: making SimAlchemy, a choose your own code school adventure for the command line with @caripizza, @katerj, and @T_on_A.
Fun coding for groups: make a game! Something that everyone knows (hangman, mad libs, etc.)
Underrated joy: debugging!!! #DevDiscuss

I could see something like there where someone tells you exactly what to code, like the challenge where you have to give directions to make a PB&J and its incredibly hard to actually do it 🤣 #DevDiscuss
I had a lot of fun coding and blogging (or really drafting). There is something super enjoyable about noting your errors as you hit them and being able to put concrete examples of getting past them. First post is here for those interested: https://t.co/UqZEnAVctB#DevDiscuss
The most fun thing to do is learn. Never had better fun learning something new. I remember back in 2013 when i was trying to build a hospital management system, using a CakePhp Cookbook. Getting out of the academic shell and actually building something was the best.

Taking a step back from the work desk, sometimes the joy of writing code doesn’t only exist during the activity itself; it’s pretty amazing when you get to relate what you write/read on your screen to things irl (e.g. recommendation systems, coding memes🙃💦✨)
#DevDiscuss
This @laurieontech! Thanks for reminding me that one of the things I've enjoyed the most is putting my blog out there... It needs a lot of work, but pushing to prod is a good start. #DevDiscuss

Something less often discussed is that new stuff is super fun if it’s not everything you’re doing. It’s hard to constantly be struggling against things you don’t know. Sometimes it’s amazingly fun to use skills you have and recognize what you already know! #DevDiscuss

The most fun I've had programming has to be when I made my own programming language, including the parser, AST, interpreter. Really enjoyed learning a lot of things I thought I wouldn't be able to learn. Turns out its a lot easier than it seems.

most fun you’ve ever had coding? 👉 Almost forgot about the time @bschmeck, @archslide, @maxkpage, and I all wrote bots to play Liars Dice against each other. Then we would run games to see who had the best bot #DevDiscuss
One of my most recent greatest joys was finally figuring out how to use .reduce() in JavaScript. I feel so powerful and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say it's changed my coding experience.

One of the most fun coding projects I've done was connecting to a weather station over a USB port in .Net. I had never done any hardware interface deployment before, and only had an open-source python implementation to follow for the protocol. #DevDiscuss
It strikes me that a lot of us consider “fun” things where we feel a moment of success or thrill. Makes you wonder how often we’re wandering around in the dark 😂 #DevDiscuss

Something that I think would be super fun is taking some time away from client work and building tools to help your workflow. At my old job, some of my coworkers were trying to create a visual regression tool that integrated with the companies products!

yes! it might be an easier sell because you can be like "this will make clients less pissed because we won't reintroduce bugs"...you may be even to sell it as a client benefit!

I think right now is the most fun I've had coding. I'm starting my 2nd year as an actual web application developer & my confidence is up. Plus I'm working on a fun side project that'll help us all keep track of our game collections that I'm probably way too into 🤪🤘🏽 #DevDiscuss
I love the idea of hackathons for teams to come together and create something together. But it should be completely unrelated to the actual business or even existing codebases. It should be a greenfield project that will stretch imaginations.
#DevDiscuss
I don't think enough of us take the time to do this, or feel guilted into doing it outside of business hours or something. Self technical care is a thing!

Wonder if a bug scavenger hunt would be a fun game? Kinda like internal pentesting your own code. Whoever finds the most bugs gets a prize at the end or everyone has to buy them drinks or something #DevDiscuss
Wrote a web app that interacted in real time with a series of rfid readers in essence creating a tracking system. Big brother on a budget.

Biggest joy in coding for me? Those breakthrough moments when something you've been struggling with for hours or days comes to life. I don't do a whole lot of personal fun projects, so I have to find joy in those kinds of places.
