A weekly chat covering topics related to teaching with a global perspective. A rotating cast of guest hosts include education experts and influencers. A must-follow for all educators who would like to open their classroom to global opportunities! Hosted by @HSingmaster and sponsored by @AsiaSocietyEDU
Mike, Tech Integrator at Lake Shore CSD from Western New York. My favorite Sesame Street characters are Bert & Ernie. I mean who doesn't love pigeons, paper clips and a few shenanigans. #globaledchat
Welcome! I'll be heading to upstate NY tomorrow - I'm speaking on a Global Learning panel for Cornell this weekend. I hope there isn't too much snow! #Globaledchat
jordosh: Bip Bippadotta (the guy who sings Mahna Mahna) is pretty fantastic too. That song is actually my ring tone. #GlobalEdChathttps://t.co/Z6QfGintRD via jordosh
jordosh: hsingmaster As a grown up, I'm now a pretty big fan of Kami. But when I was a kid, SesameWorkshop hadn't made LoveTakalani yet. #globaledchathttps://t.co/kh9w24AsO9 via jordosh
"When people talk about computers in education they do not all have the same image in mind. Some think of using the computer to program the kid; others think of using the kid to program the computer." - Seymour Papert "Twenty Things To Do With A Computer" #globaledchat
A1: I would love to integrate VR technology in, Google Earth in VR is a great way to explore the earth. Also interested to hear if anyone has incorporated Assassin's Creed Origins and its new 'virtual tour' mode! #globaledchat
A1--We recommend a digital tool for each #GlobalScholars project and offer teachers a walk-through during PD. This lets teachers ask questions and play with the tool before presenting it to students. Opens the door for more to play. #globaledchat
In our research we're studying how we can improve early spatial/math skills through a guided play intervention. We designed a digital app that we're using in preschool classrooms! #globaledchat#StemStartsEarly
YES, though Kermit started in Sesame Street first... and actually was featured long before that. (Muppet nerd here.) Great Jim Henson exhibit at the @MovingImageNYC. #GlobalEdChat
A1 I finally got a green screen this year! haven't gotten much mileage out of it yet. we play a lot with @Flipgrid and #vr whenever we can. @GooseChase is fun! #globaledchat
I need to play with Osmo more! I love what I've seen of it. Maybe I can get it for my son's birthday in May as a gift to him (and me...hehe). #globaledchat

A2 I prefer they allowed collaboration. Some do, but others do not. Access can also be tricky. We did an amazing project with @MarcoVigelini and @creatubbles in Minecraft, a global digital art museum & community build. #globaledchathttps://t.co/nYWxmwOqMR
A2: Access= $, resources- including any and all tech devices my Ss need, time to play and explore - for myself and the Ss...but mostly Time! #globaledchat
A2: Behaviors of students are not always on task, not using technology appropriately. This year I've had to do a LOT of reteaching digital citizenship. #globaledchat
A1 the internet not working. Also there is not so much face to face contact I feel you don't get to know the students as well as you would. Also them playing games and not working.
#globaledchat
second this. play is a lot less fun when we end up having to stick each kid in front of a screen. sometimes an opportunity for creative collaboration, though... #globaledchat

A2: I would say having access to programmes, having enough devices to cover a class, tech not working properly, students going off task, how to keep students engaged when tech is now always around us that the novelty has worn off #globaledchat
We're looking at specific factors (spatial language, gesture, feedback) that may help 3-year-olds when making increasingly complex puzzles. We embedded the training/testing in a fun birthday party game. Some kids are trained/testing with physical puzzles vs. app. #Globaledchat
A2 distractions. tough to allow creativity and student-led play but also demand some focus and clarity in learning. also rigor. with HS students it's either all play or all work - rarely anything in between. #globaledchat
Yes, right now my Ss are working on shared laptops- which have their own challenges. Even the internet is having difficulty holding up... #globaledchat
A3 One could take just about anything and make it digital. We did it with Romeo & Juliet in @cospaces_edu! The coding, voice-overs, collaboration and creation made the learning stick. #globaledchathttps://t.co/wd3yT6dmmQ
jordosh: JStepanicic I did an event in DC with the Ubisoft assassinscreed team last week. The new EDU Egypt edition looks fantastic.#globaledchat via jordosh

jordosh: Q3:How can students as global creators of content produce digital artifacts that represent creativity and understanding? #globaledchat via jordosh
jordosh: KirstenMorse92 mrsheikesclass I'd rather play games than work. Its one of the things we have to LEARN to resist. (But even as an adult, I sometimes fail). #globaledchat via jordosh

A3 #globaledchat Through authentic experiences of what students are curious about. Through collaboration around a common need many doors open and the world becomes smaller and connected through our willingness to support change, positive change.
I've been using the devices with Ss for 4 years and NEVER had to do this. I'd say no. Don't disable devices unless you have to. There are too many wonderful things to explore! #globaledchat
A3 I believe that all students have creativity in their own way. And I would say having the technology available the students are able to access many different apps to show off their strengths
#globaledchat
A3--@Tinkercad was a big hit with #GlobalScholars when we asked them to design urban farms. First they explored urban farming innovations and city needs. That let them get creative with location, design, adaptation to their city, even what crops to grow. 1 example: #globaledchat
Agreed! Luckily we have a pretty good infrastructure, however when collaborating globally, it takes two (or more). Bandwidth is always a concern. #globaledchat
In reply to
@jordosh, @mrsheikesclass, @KirstenMorse92
A3 there's so much power in connection - in LINKS. creativity and understanding can be showcased just by allowing students to work with multiple dimensions of media and genre and linking them together in a website, video, infographic, feed, etc. #globaledchat
A3: Allow students to choose the avenue to display their understanding digitally, but give them guidelines for the goals you want to see them attain with the product. #globaledchat
A3 #globaledchat Even young children connect and begin to use digital platforms to enhance and enrich learning. The jazz for my Kindergarten students is that they know others in the world are looking and are interested in their learning. Powerful, impactful..
"Show me naked body parts" was the worst. Nothing graphic, and Siri was kind enough to not show them anything! :) Way to go, @SiriouslySusan! #globaledchat
In reply to
@jordosh, @KirstenMorse92, @SiriouslySusan
A3: My Ss have created their own teaching videos on math content using @YouTube and @flipgrid But little ones can also share with eachother and their Ps with @seesaw So many options@ #globaledchat
A3 real life examples - look at the changemakers. how are they using VR, or infographics, or videos and captions, or memes, ETC? real, authentic challenges invite students to design real digital artifacts that showcase so much more than learning. #globaledchat
jordosh: mrsheikesclass KirstenMorse92 Bandwidth is often a problem, a lot of schools don't have wifi set up adequately for high volume. #globaledchat via jordosh
A4 We had great success with this as a result of a collaboration with @AMWheelock using virtual worlds and The Diary of Anne Frank. I captured some of the student learning here. #globaledchathttps://t.co/Ric9ukz5EI
A4 #globaledchat From a child's perspective many ideas emerge.. Art, podcasts, conversations highlighted and shared via @KidblogDotOrg offer opportunities to elevate a student's voice, build an awareness of the world.
A4: To be global learners, students need to be able to take different perspectives, be critical investigators, and be able to competently share information #globaledchat
A4 Students are very lucky with many resources up their sleeve. They are able to research things easily and hopefully show an understanding in their work
#globaledchat
A1. Just found this cool chat and jumping in late. I created a Digital Communication class as an elective and have been using Poll Anywhere @GetKahoot, @Flipgrid and Google Forms/Slides to create surveys/games for students. Next up they will play w/making their own! #globaledchat
Brings to mind a fav quote from @brainpicker “we’re all dot connectors now” - the future of work is all about being able to make the links #globaledchat
A4--#GlobalScholars are interviewing food workers about local food supply chain. Students are posting "aha" stories & pics to the e-classroom as they see the often long journey from source to plate. Many peers connecting over food waste & other common global issues. #globaledchat
A4 We had a chat last night on #earlylang about interculturality & intercultural competence. Summary will be a great read to see how elementary language teachers are inspiring kids to investigate the world and global matters! #globaledchat@EarlyLang
A4. Sorry I'm late and sorry if I end up repeating stuff that's already been said. Global significance = SDGs. Investigate the heck out of them!
#GlobalEdChat
jordosh: m_drez AMWheelock So many awesome immersive things out things available now. We covered a bunch in the guide: https://t.co/KF6IDdZSIY#globaledchat via jordosh
jordosh: LisaHayman1 Right. It is amazing how much you learn when you have to talk about an issue with someone from a faraway place. #globaledchat via jordosh
A4 #earlylang consensus was create an environment that asks kids to show they understand things that are "weird" to them are normal to someone else. See perspectives, not just products. #globaledchat
A4: Tech brings the world together, teaching students to be openminded about our multicultural society will allow their investigation into matters to flourish. #globaledchat
Q5. Video games and VR can provide opportunities for students to learn about different people, cultures, and experiences –do you have favorite resources that have been successful in your classroom? #globaledchat

jordosh: Have you seen PaulDarvasi 's paper for UNESCO_MGIEP
"Empathy, Perspective and Complicity: How Digital Games can Support Peace Education and Conflict Resolution" #globaledchathttps://t.co/9ZxamFuU1w via jordosh
A5: Just starting to use VR in my classroom. We'v only done volcanoes and the North Pole. My students want to do another as a reward for good behavior! #globaledchat
Thanks for taking that to another level. Exposing students to other cultures does not guarantee empathy, it's not like putting 🌲 s out in the sun to photosynthesize. #GlobalEdChat

A2. Biggest challenge is keeping Ss on task. The temptation to play games and visit other sites is so strong. Goguardian has been awesome. Started taking away privileges & to regain they have to write a review of the game/site they visited and create a dig contract. #globaledchat
A5: I so want to incorporate these into my future classroom, exciting stuff! Not sure how accessible VR is in NZ though, I work part time for NZ's first VR Arcade and we have had a lot of uni students come in to use the tech #globaledchat
How will you teach empathy in your classroom? Here are two new lessons from the two grand finalists of the 2017 Margot Stern Strom Innovation Grants. https://t.co/yI9aDj7cvl
Surely exposure is better than nothing though, the more a child is exposed to, the more chance they have of accepting others through a variety of experiences #globaledchat

Hi everyone! Kristin from @EmpaticoOrg here. What an all-star group. I’m only able to pop in for a moment, but am reading along. Important topic! #GlobalEdChat
jordosh: Check out MatthewFarber and karenschrier 's paper for UNESCO_MGIEP - The Limits and Strengths of Using Digital Games as "Empathy Machines" #globaledchathttps://t.co/mQ9iTyM3ad via jordosh
jordosh: stephwurking CooneyCenter AsiaSocietyEDU SesameWorkshop Depends. There's been a lot of work done on the Empathy/Altruism hypothesis. #globaledchat via jordosh
A6 By sharing through digital communication tools like @Seesaw it helps parents see what's happening in class. In many cases, Ss are excited to share. Much more than sharing their latest worksheet. A student parent edu game jam night could be fun! #globaledchat
A6: As a parent, our school sends notices of new technology tools they purchase for students (ie online interactive libraries for learning Chinese). They purchase subscriptions and send us the passwords to encourage us to use them. #globaledchat
No doubt, they have to start somewhere. In fact, exposure must be done responsibly so as not to freak them out or to make them feel we are "forcing" something on them that they might not like. #GlobalEdChat
In reply to
@JStepanicic, @jordosh, @CooneyCenter, @AsiaSocietyEDU, @SesameWorkshop
A6 If its fun and exciting they will want to take it home to share. Otherwise assisting students and their families to help them further understand
#globaledchat
Hi everyone! Coming in late but reading comments that are awesome! check out https://t.co/VgNP0NxrHJ for FREE biographical resources to use to help your Ss understand their global connections! #biogiraffe#globaledchat
A6: First make that relational connection with students and their whanau, bringing the whanau into participating in the learning journey of their child. #globaledchat
jordosh: Learn how digital play can help cultivate distinct cognitive and social-emotional skills for a connected world in this guide from CooneyCenter AsiaSocietyEDU SesameWorkshop & Grable Foundation #GlobalEdChathttps://t.co/l2TfECrCrxhttps://t.co/4f2bU8QpaM via jordosh
A6: Great question - interviewing parents can be a fun assignment, we connected US + Kyrgyz classrooms, had Ss interview their parents about grocery shopping experiences and then share pics of what their families bought #globaledchat
jordosh: https://t.co/1Rnntm6UdQ do you encourage students and parents to explore these resources together beyond the classroom? #globaledchat via jordosh
A6: We get a list of passwords and websites for subscriptions and then there is a great student resources page on their website for use at my kids’ school. #GlobalEdChat
A6: Our school has a hashtag where we share thing our students are doing in class. One idea is to add a link to the technology they are using so they can explore with their parents further at home. I think it is wonderful if they teach their parents how to use it. #globaledchat
Interesting. I have not thought much about "digital play" but it seems like for many of our students, as digital natives, "digital play" is their natural habitat. That's why they want the temptation to go elsewhere is so strong. #globaledchat
A6: Share the learning objectives and progress. Give parents opportunities to “play” and learn. Send instruction home along with emailed video tutorials to get parents started when things are unfamiliar. #globaledchat
A3. I like tools that start w/ templates like @canva@lucidpress and @VismeApp which spark creativity while teaching principles of design. This then empowers students to build from scratch in these same apps or new docs, slides, websites, etc. to show understanding #globaledchat
jordosh: Q7:What is one digital resource for global collaboration you hope to use in instruction tomorrow? Tell us about the project/lesson.#globaledchat via jordosh
jordosh: m_drez Seesaw seasaw WhittMister I can't watch a 37 minute video while participating in a #globaledchat but I look forward to checking it out later. via jordosh
A7 tomorrow my students are presenting trimester final projects - @canva#infographics about endangered cultures using stories from @goproject! stay tuned - I hope to share some out here! #globaledchat
A7: I'm working on integrating @Buncee and Google Classroom more. Heading to do a peer observation in the morning to see how her students use their Chromebooks in 4th. #globaledchat
A7 Use social media (i.e. videoconferencing) for global collaboration. I've got an article coming out about it that will be in the Oregon Journal of the Social Studies & will be able to be accessed here next month https://t.co/qlYgWbgPkE#globaledchat
💧 Celebrate World Water Day 💧

jordosh: GlobalReady hsingmaster decodeglobal JenWilliamsEdu MicheleMacumber kristinohnstad Meriwynn GlobalAnisha sararileyhowell They wanted to emphasize that water is often a gender issue. In many places the girls get the water because the boys are in school. #globaledchat…
I'd love to see some examples of digital play that incorporate real-life, face-to-face play, too. Don't get me wrong, I am totally all in on the promise of digital play to increase empathy & global competence Am also a fan of old fashioned game-based learning #globaledchat
I'll try to remember to share the ejournal link on #globaledchat when it comes out. It's going to be a special issue on teaching global education in the academic journal
#globaledchat A7 Continuing to go beyond the walls of school. We have visited Russia, Canada, Sweden, France, Israel and Denmark this year. Learned geography skills but more important the opportunity to share culture and talk with our new friends around the world.
A3: Amy students have started blogging about things THEY want to share. They’re the experts of their own creation and we celebrate student voice at the same time. #GlobalEdChat
Please help me thank @jordosh for taking time to be with us on #globaledchat!! Thanks to @CooneyCenter for their help as well. And thanks to each of you for the thoughtful discussion today!
A4. Still working on the matters of global significance part, but I am teaching my Ss how to navigate Google and YouTube to investigate their interests and passions productively. I decided to create a teachable moment out of their digital distractions. #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat A7 One of the best interactions ever: our 2nd/3rd Graders shared the Pledge with our friends from Israel, they sang their national anthem!
Agree! I see makerspace environments as a natural environment for this, Ss create something with hands and then develop a video to tell the world what they created #globaledchat
