Oh my gosh. Since being on @Twitter I have made so many changes! I am not the same teacher I was 6 years ago for sure. #bfc530@MrsCBurke It has also helped me to keep growing and learning and getting better!

This year I started using #SBG in my classroom after reading books by @robertjmarzano and @rickwormeli2 . I learned much more about the standards I teach and about what my students really know! #bfc530

I stopped giving homework a couple years ago when I realized that a) the kids who did it were usually the kids who didn’t need the additional practice and b) students need more time to rest and spend time with friends and family to be healthy. #bfc530

Good morning, all! Ben here from Western NC. Former STEM teacher (now doing freelance) who did lots of intentional changes over my 11 years in the classroom. Probably two biggest were #PBL & #competencyed and they led to an amazing environment of engagement w/ students. #bfc530
So many changes…never want to bore myself with what I do. However, there activities that I have done for years too. Tried and true can be just as effective as new and improved #bfc530

Incorporating even more body/sensory breaks into daily routine.
Do I lose some “academic” time with them in order for the break to occur?
Yep.
Is the “academic” time I DO have with them even stronger and more focused b/c I incorporated more breaks?
YEP! 🙌🏼

Twitter has been the game changer.
And I read. A lot. Education books. Fiction. Classics. Plays.

I read a lot, a real lot. Since moving to the intermediate school, my reading has been essential for the students. I know the books in my library and I know my students and I can match them up. #bfc530
Well done, Patty! The cool thing I found with this change is students using the common language from the standards...big shift to a growth mindset over traditional grading. #bfc530

I changed my entire philosophy of instruction (more activity based), grading that reflects learning, more classwork less homework, etc. What I have learned is that there is a better way to do things, with less stress and more fun time for the students and parents. #bfc530

#bfc530 I stopped taking points off for work being late. Most Ss still met deadlines, but Ss who were super stressed felt relief. If something is a day late, who cares? No need forSs to work all night and turn in shoddy work. I stand by that decision.

Happy Friday everyone. A change that I have made this year is to try to not sweat the small stuff. My students let me know when I’m reverting to old habits. #bfc530
A change that has been sweeping all our classes is the move to having Ss self-assess & come up with their own grades. Along with change in word choice, this has had an incredibly positive affect on learning. Best thing we've ever done. #bfc530

That's awesome. There was a decision in our kids' schools to assign less homework. So much happier at home. Although now tht my daughter is in high school, all bets seem to be off. #bfc530

~6 years ago I started teaching through problem solving via #3ActMath.
4 years ago I added in visibly random groups & vertical non-permanent surfaces. #vrg#vnps
Learned even my applied Ss could be engaged most of the period. #bfc530
One change I have made is in opening the library up in the mornings to students. I started it at my previous school & have continued it at my new school. It makes for a high energy start to my day, and the kids love it. It is their library after all. #bfc530
I remember the epiphany that my standard review Bball game had each kid focused on one question a class and they are rewarded w/shot. Changed it to a Kahoot game, all involved for all ?'s & then # of shots are determined by your team's score #bfc530
Handing over ownership of our class library to Ss was a change for me this year. They sorted all of the books, came up with the genre labels, and now treat the entire space very differently. I loved how they really examined each book as they were sorting.#bfc530
I’m giving little quizzes every week or two weeks. The quizzes spiral the content for the whole year. No big unit tests, kids know they have another opportunity on the next quiz! Less pressure. #bfc530
I’ve become a lot more wary of the latest fad in K–12, and a lot more focused on the essentials:
How do we get more kids to succeed at reading, writing, speaking, mathematical thinking?
That’s my big shift. I was thinking about it this morn! 👇

Your goal: to get all Ss working with grade level texts.
Your challenge: it’s hard!

My whole math class has changed..
No math homework
No studying for math test
Math tests can be retaken several times. (I only give them to stay with the program bc I am required to teach it)
Funny, doing it this way, I have notice NO dip in math performance #bfc530
I've significantly reduced the homework I give! And make sure it is something they can do independently, or have a longer timeline so they can work on some executive functioning skills (like time management) #bfc530
#bfc530 I give #students more opportunities to have a voice in our #classroom: decorating the room at lunchtime, asking what #books they recommend, devoting a bulletin board to their voices, remembering to ask "what do you think?"

Gm. I insist more. Thanks to having several great support staff over the years. I’ve retooled and strengthened my push. a well tuned , constant push wins. The secretary has been my best model for it. Shout out to the non-teaching staff that are teachers to many #bfc530
Now that you say that I realize one change I made in one of my classes is that I stop giving chapter tests. Just use other assessments....Kids less stressed:)

Nice! This is a key building block to moving to a competency environment, where students are assessed for mastery only on the key competencies (no grading for homework, extra credit, participation, etc.). Growth>grades. #bfc530

Sometimes the most challenging discussions with students are the most relevant and needed. I have learned over the years to become comfortable with the “tough stuff.” Students have questions about their world and need opportunities to question, collaborate, and grow. #bfc530
I'm still extremely sore around my mid-section (incision is about 7 inches), but I go to the surgeon today for a check up. I've been off pain medicine since Monday. #bfc530
Biggest change for me was not assigning reading logs for nightly reading - reading should be a joy not a task. Thanks to @pernilleripp and @donalynbooks
I made these changes because my traditional teaching methods resulted in students that could do very little math on year end exams. Too many failures. #bfc530

Thanks, I'm still looking for the shift. No one has taken me up on redoing a test yet. I think my Ss are so used to failing that they are satisfied with a 2 (which doesnt translate to a 50 on our 100 pt report card scale) Any ideas to support those ideas further? #bfc530

We redesigned professional learning. Ts meet monthly with a cohort of peers that they choose (or they work independently) to work on learning more about a topic their cohort chooses. It’s no longer one and done, sit and get and is full of choice! #BFC530
I am in a classroom but, I too have upped my PD game since @VtheLearner turned me on to #bfc530 & teacher chats I have read so many awesome books and learned so much:)

I gave up my teacher’s desk once & never missed it. I’m in a different room this year & space, furniture woes, etc prevent me from the same but, I NEVER sit there. It’s a different way of life😊 #bfc530
Yes! I find our math program doesn’t teach kids how to think. It scaffolds them so much; but employing things like @youcubed they learn the struggle and can apply it to other things! #bfc530
A big change in the past few years for me has been modified retake for tests (It's open notes at home). Final grade is 2/3 of your original grade + 1/3 of the retake. Realized my goal isn't for my students to do poorly on the test, but know the material #bfc530
I was just at @GCMLibrary library on Monday and loved seeing all how many students were in there before school started. Awesome when the library is "the place to be" #bfc530
A change I made is not a single but rather an attitude ... it is an adaptability ... I am pretty much total classwork ... no real opportunity for kids to turn in late work because we work through it together. Take away the opportunity for negative behavior #bfc530
I love Jo Boalers ideas and she has influenced my teaching but I don't use the YouCubed stuff.

One change I've made over the years is how connected I am with other educators. My first few years of teaching, it was just me and my classroom. Gradually I was part of a team, a department, a school, a school division. Twitter is an extension of that. #bfc530
Great change! I remember very clearly the year I got rid of my teacher desk! It made such a shift in the ownership of the space and how my students and I interacted #bfc530
Trusting the kids to do the right thing vs assuming they will do the wrong thing is a huge shift ... kids respect those who trust and respect them #bfc530
Hi Bridget! Very well thank you! It’s Friday night in Sydney around 9:50pm, which means the weekend is here! I hope your knee is getting better? #bfc530
They were exactly what my son needed. His reading ability was way below his desire for interesting stories, developed characters, and complex plots. Graphic novels bridged that gap until his reading ability caught up. They made a reader out of him. #bfc530

Retakes on tests, mastering unmet skills. I learned how determined Ss are to know the material. There are requirements for every retake and I find Ss keep learning the material instead of giving up. #redbud132#bfc530
The thing about #bfc530 that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
Four years ago I decided to go gradeless. After studying other teachers who have done it, my eyes were opened to the fact that all grades are subjective and meaningless because they don't actually reflect what a student has truly learned. (1/2) #BFC530
It takes a while for my students to adjust to this mindset shift. Once they get it, almost all of them end up appreciating more ownership over their learning. (2/2) #BFC530#tg2chat#ttog
