Yay! Two chats in one week! We are on a roll! Excited to see you here at #whatisschool! I don't think I mentioned last night that I am a SLP as well :)
Greetings everyone! Lucy Villarreal, leadership ed consultant, coach & facilitator based in Tx...in the middle of preparing dinner but still wanting to chat about how to make teaching a more attractive profession. I’ll be in and out #multitasking#whatisschool
Running a tad late! Hi everyone. Justine, from Auckland, New Zealand. Primary teacher and full-time PhD candidate researching gifted ed. Dipping in and out today. #whatisschool
A1: I've always loved school. I loved it as a student, it was a safe place to me & I had several great teachers. In G7 I thought to myself, I could do this & really enjoy it. #whatisschool
A1: I always wanted to be a teacher, something inside me always felt passionate about working w/ kids. Taught my first Spec Ed class last yr & got inspired once again. It can be challenging, but I’m loving it & learning so much!! #whatisschool
A1: My "why" is definitely connections/relationships. I had great relationships and feel every child needs a trusting adult in their life. #whatisschool
A1. I wanted a less stressful job than project manager (hahahaha). I wanted to share information and thought I could help children while others helped mine.
#whatisschool
A1 I was inspired to be an educator by some great teachers I had and motivated to help others have better experiences than I had with some less than great teachers #whatisschool
A1. I became a teacher to be part of changing the system for our learners. I didn't particularly enjoy school so I wanted it to be a different experience for others. #whatisschool
I was inspired by various enthusiastic teachers who made learning fun...I also thought it would be a good way to pay it forward :) time off in the summer was a draw as well 😉 #whatisschool
#whatisschool I got into the job by chance. However, realising the impact that I could be having on making the world a better place by guiding our students is what inspires and motivates me to stay in the profession.
A1)
School represented opportunity and access for me at a young age.
I advised college freshmen on probation, realized I needed to help at pre-college level.
I wanted to create and prepare my students for opportunity and access.
#whatisschool
A1. I want to be the kind of teacher that I had needed when I was in school. I want to save kids and give them a real chance at life. I want to help those who struggle to find themselves and struggle with learning. #whatisschool
A1: I have always had inspirational educators in my life - I think Mrs Greenland in High School (Grade 10) was the first time I considered that I could be a teacher - she made such an impact on me #whatisschool
A1: I’ve always enjoyed working with younger children (even when I was in high school I’d coach younger teams & help out in classrooms) I was always told I’d be a great teacher. Graduating from teachers collage my biggest/proudest accomplishments (not the biggest)#whatisschool
A1) I wanted to enjoy my work everyday, working with kids, have an impact on their life and be able to travel the world. There’s need of teachers everywhere. #whatisschool
But I find that my colleagues who didn't enjoy school are some of the best teachers I know, because they came at it from a completely different mindset. They like to make kids feel better about school, bc they didn't. #whatisschool
A1b: the reasons I have stayed teacher are decidedly different than my reasons for beginning this career. Turns out I love kids and I love teaching! #whatisschool
A1) for the love of learning and sharing, my kids / becoming a parent / inspiring them to love learning inspired me to study teaching degree.#whatisschool
Be sure to connect and follow the amazing educators at #whatisschool today - there are already so many great people here - don't miss the opportunity to grow your PLN #growPLN
A1: I was inspired by the prospect of making the educational experience better for everyone involved. I am continually motivated every time I cm able to facilitate something that excites students about the possibilities that lie ahead. #whatisschool
A1: Adding to my first answer.. I also had a teacher that made me feel absolutely useless, she embarrassed me in front of my peers and made me feel dumb (this stuck with me throughout my whole school life) I vowed to never make a child feel worthless. #whatisschool
The main difference was that students said they could laugh & learn at the same time. Also, they said that I was willing to listen to them. #whatisschool
Q2) Many educators are firm in understandings of their own “why”–which often doesn’t often include “excellent pay” as a reason. How might educators find job satisfaction in light of low pay? #whatisschool
Q2: Many educators are firm in understandings of their own “why”--which often doesn’t often include “excellent pay” as a reason. How might educators find job satisfaction in light of low pay? #whatisschool@mrkempnz
A1: Elementary ed was my 4th and final major in college. I could take everything I learned, and share it w/kids to see what they thought & would do w/ it.#whatisschool
A1: Two things. I want to make a difference in the lives of young people. I want students to learn that learning is good and can also be fun! #whatisschool
A2: You need to find your tribe. It may not be in your school building, but you need your PLN that you can get advice & feedback from. That is what Twitter has given me. #whatisschool
A2: any person in any profession can find job satisfaction if their why is aligned to their daily actions. When I’m dissatisfied, I adjust something. #whatisschool
Q2) Many educators are firm in understandings of their own “why”–which often doesn’t often include “excellent pay” as a reason. How might educators find job satisfaction in light of low pay? #whatisschool
A2:There is nothing better than the moment your student's face lights up because they just got it. Or when they hug you spontaneously to thank you! #whatisschool
Q2: Through the students that have future success beyond their current circumstance, being authentically thanked by families, and the strong relationships created along the way.
A2: I think, while pay is not always talked about it is an important aspect of life for educators - the reality is that we are professionals and should be respected as such. One important element is pay #whatisschool
Q2: Many educators are firm in understandings of their own “why”--which often doesn’t often include “excellent pay” as a reason. How might educators find job satisfaction in light of low pay? #whatisschool@mrkempnz
A2: Finding joy daily is a goal of mine. When I was "substitute teaching", the pay wasn't consistent or reliable sometimes, but if every teaching opportunity meant an experience to learn & an opportunity to show a kid I cared about them, that made it worth it #whatisschool
A2: If there were more ways for career advancement without needing to leave the classroom. It's getting better, but still a work in progress. #whatisschool
Hi, Jill here from Hanoi! I was inspired by my ES , MS, & HS Art teachers! I later learned from wonderful ISU University Art teachers! I taught Kg-12 Art in USA before I went International. #whatisschool 1A
A2: Its not always about the money…though the pay helps. In my role I want to make a difference in education and to help new teachers become better at what they do. My goal is always improving student learning. And I’ll do whatever it takes to get there. #whatisschool
A1 I grasped the neuroscience behind brain based learning and that school could be a drastically different experience for kids if we focus on social emotional, how the brain learns & culture that supports creative risk taking. #whatisschool
A2) Relationships and positive work environment , PLN helps. In many situations, Satisfaction comes not by changing our condition, but by making a choice – the choice to focus on ‘ WHY’. Satisfaction like happiness is a choice / measure decided by us #whatisschool
A2: You need to find your tribe. It may not be in your school building, but you need your PLN that you can get advice & feedback from. That is what Twitter has given me. #whatisschool
A2. Perks on the job matter. For me getting a better laptop, a special iPad, a cool camera to use matters. Getting respect - my opinion matters & act on it. #PLN matters.
#whatisschool
A2: It is interesting to me--all my #highered students that are preservice teachers all absolutely know their why and are comfortable knowing that money will not be a major perk of the work. I just wonder at what point it changes. #whatisschool
A2) Good life quality, time to do proper work without an extreme stress what means a reduced work load, good work relationships and enjoyable personal life. #whatisschool
A2: The "system" needs to find a way to recognize that all educators are leaders and as such provide opportunities to explore avenues of personal growth in the profession. #whatisschool
Q2) Many educators are firm in understandings of their own “why”–which often doesn’t often include “excellent pay” as a reason. How might educators find job satisfaction in light of low pay? #whatisschool
#whatisschool#edfb4338 I think that a teacher would just have to really love the youth and what they do to change kids lives. This could be a possible reason why a teacher wouldn’t care as much about low pay.
A2: even money is important, there are many opportunities in our jobs to growth as a persona and as a professional. The daily interactions worth kids and Teachers are important for mee too. #whatisschool
A2: When you hear a student say, “You are the reason I stayed in school” or “I’ve learned so much in your room!” Those are the reasons we teach!#whatisschool
Yes!! I wish the teacher who inspired me had twitter so I could tag him...he's enjoying the retired life now. But he showed me how important relationships w/ Ss is...and having fun with them too. #whatisschool
Yes and the pay question and concern is valid. Often respect and voice comes through with pay. But for many teachers they find ways to get “some satisfaction, reward” beyond pay scale. It’s truly a shame that many learn to live with #whatisschool
hard to explain ... i don't do direct instruction, but i directly interact with the kids ... i don't give kids any information, but i lay it at their feet for them to discover... i have the worst classroom management skills, but the least amount of discipline issues #whatisschool
A2: In addition to your tribe, opportunities to grow within the profession are great. I have been a Dean, Head of School, EdTech Coach, and now Director of EdTech. #whatisschool
A2 My focus is on the overall impact on society of providing a high quality, multi faceted, education to the people who will make up that society in the near future. #WhatIsSchool
I should also add that I was told by a professional career advisor that I would not be a successful teacher ... i did not have the psychological profile to be a good teacher ... my kids would argue otherwise. #whatisschool
A2: teaching is a very hard job, it’s not all finger painting and sing alongs. Low pay tends to come with the package (in most cases) but I feel that most (I say most) teachers are satisfied and love their jobs, becasue it’s not about the pay 💰it’s about the kids #whatisschool
You get out-what you put in! Bring joy, share laughter, facilitate #growthmindset be a good listener and see the beauty in every opportunity and challenge! #whatisschool
Q2) Many educators are firm in understandings of their own “why”–which often doesn’t often include “excellent pay” as a reason. How might educators find job satisfaction in light of low pay? #whatisschool
I had this happen last week with one of my Ts from school. I let him know that he must have done something right and thanks for whatever it was! It was pretty cool. #whatisschool
Yes!! I wish the teacher who inspired me had twitter so I could tag him...he's enjoying the retired life now. But he showed me how important relationships w/ Ss is...and having fun with them too. #whatisschool
I think for the most part there are always things we can adjust, but sometimes educators face situations that are unhealthy and require us to engage in crucial conversations and reflective questioning. #whatisschool
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A2: We are about 30 minutes from goal setting conferences with Ss. I'm excited because I know they will make tremendous growth. As Educators, we are their biggest cheerleaders especially when Ss don't think they can do anything. It's these moments that tell you #whatisschool
A2 Job satisfaction can be found in knowing that ONLY in our profession do we get student visiting years later to say thanks for being there when nobody else was, thank you for changing my life! Teachers make a difference in people’s lives!!! #whatisschool
Q2: Many educators are firm in understandings of their own “why”--which often doesn’t often include “excellent pay” as a reason. How might educators find job satisfaction in light of low pay? #whatisschool@mrkempnz
A2) Blessed to be in district w/ good pay, but best reminder is when former students drop by, send thank-you email, or become guest speaker in your class.
Also, find colleague w/ similar mindset, share ideas, challenge each other, & talk about life beyond school.
#whatisschool
A3 - To attract the best candidates possible we do need to give them a good offer. However, if we can somehow show them the joy of teaching, it’ll go a long way #whatisschool
A3 Honestly, states are going to have to show that teaching is important to them. To get people to want to teach, they need to pay competitively. I teach, coach, and drive a bus, along with another side job. I’m tired by Friday night. #whatisschool
A2. Teachers are happy when they’re in collaborative, open minded and supportive schools. Salary is a necessity, but so many aspects of school life can bring fulfilment too #whatisschool
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A3: Celebrate success stories and WHY we love teaching - get people like the people in this #whatisschool chat in front of training teachers OR high school students - show them the benefits of our career #whatisschool
A3: I feel like it might almost require a lack of qualified teachers to fix the issue. A lack of qualified people might raise salaries, and so bring more people back to the profession... #whatisschool
A3) Developing strong relationships with colleges and universities so pre-service teachers feel a part of a larger network of learners. Check out the work of @SFecich . She’s making great strides in our region. #Whatisschool
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A3: TIME may be asking the wrong question. Yes, salary is part of it, but the larger part is irrelevant paperwork, evaluations based on test scores, general lack of public respect due to a misconception of what teachers actually do...#whatisschool
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A3) Some countries seriously need to increase teacher salaries and avoid they needing to find a second job. Otherwise there’s no way to promote the profession. #whatisschool
A3: We need to MARKET our profession and celebrate the GOOD! #whatisschool
1. amplify the voices of preservice teachers EARLY and OFTEN
2. engage high school students and college students in Twitter EARLY and OFTEN
3. Create community connections & share STORIES of our schools!
A3: Showing them that teaching is one of the most important professions. We all remember one teacher that inspired us to become what we are today #whatisschool
A3: Discuss the benefits of what being a teacher is and does - it is not just about making a difference but there are so many amazing aspects to our profession - be vocal and trend the positive! Negative talk from teachers is why others don't want to get involved #whatisschool
A3: hi everyone coming in late. I’m not from the States, but I can’t help but think that bringing these problems to light and demanding that government reps make change and develop positive educational policies is where it all starts. Its all about the vote #whatisschool
We keep ourselves from drying up.
If we're angry, bitter, and jaded, it'll show up in our classrooms, in our relationships. If the profession is no longer appealing to you, then why would it be to our students?
#whatisschool
A3 Sharing the positives, but working on solutions for what could be better. Providing support, ongoing coaching or mentorship, and looking at how we can work through obstacles with creative prob solving. #whatisschool
A3b: getting teachers to be treated (and paid) as professionals is a huge cultural shift that will take a long time and some support from the top. I think political advocacy - no matter where you are - is vital. #whatisschool
A3 We need to stop glamorizing money and possessions and instead model to our new generation the importance of believing and standing for something BIGGER than ourselves! Service to others! #whatisschool
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A3: I wonder if the attrition rate has more to do with workload and poor transition into schools than the money? You feel isolated and alone. And schools are often not good at combating that. #whatisschool
A3 I equity of teacher pay across the country is astounding. Seems coasts have higher pay for their teachers. Wish districts across USA would figure out how to work together. For teachers to need extra jobs to make ends meet is unconscionable #whatisschool
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A3: I’m not convinced that the pipeline is “drying up,” but there’s certainly more we can and should do to make the profession both more attractive and sustainable https://t.co/99Dpe3Bvb6#whatisschool@NCTQ
Why would any sane person want to teach? Seriously, if you listen to the narrative being pushed by politicians ... all we hear is how bad the schools are how teachers are failing the kids ... im baffled ... #whatisschool
A3: I think we also need to get real about teacher burnout...need to have open conversations and watch for the early warning signs.
Need to support our teachers and school leaders ALWAYS!
#gotyourback#whatisschool
Y'all I was so excited to rush home and join the convo that I forgot to sign out of the @PenPalSchools account first.....so hi again! Jessica from Texas here! Community manager at @PenpalSchools#whatisschool
A3 The truth is that we can get a bunch of people to come into teaching for the love of it, but if they can’t afford to raise a family doing it without having other jobs, it is hard to keep them. At some point, it has to hit the tipping point. #whatisschool
A3: Whenever I walk into ALDI and see signs for Managers @ $110 000 p/a, it makes me stop and think about when my job begins, ends and how much happens in between. Teaching is a life choice. #whatisschool
A3: I know it doesn't solve all the problems but...Find JOY daily. Smile. Laugh. Find a positive from the day and celebrate it. Celebrate and support each other. And practice self-care. #whatisschool#trendthepositive
A3: We can improve the pipeline through empowerment of teachers...early and often.
Admins must say yes more than no; what more than how; and honestly trust that failure comes before success.
Publicly give Ts voice and support. #whatisschool
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A3:Student teaching earlier in education so that new Teachers can see what it is about and get the passion for it. Passionate teachers will stay #whatisschool
Q4) With attrition high (17% leaving the profession in 1st 5 years), how might we as educators take action to protect our profession and keep high-quality teachers in the classroom? #whatisschool
Q4: With attrition high (17% leaving profession in 1st 5 years), how might we as educators take action to protect our profession and keep high-quality teachers in the classroom? #whatisschool@mrkempnz
A3. We need to promote what we do and celebrate with our communities. Teaching will never be everyone’s calling, but we can be positive examples and show our love for our profession #whatisschool
There's a district in Michigan that seems to pay higher than the coast. If one calculates in cost of living differences. But yes, we need to work together, end the need for extra jobs - if not for Ts ... Do it for the children. #whatisschool
A3: We change the script. We own this story and it's time people truly know how many educators work day and night for the passion, the commitment, and above all, the students. It's not okay for a society to not support its teachers. #whatisschool
When TV shows that denigrate teachers get made....we need to speak loudly about the harm it does to the profession and ultimately, to the students. In many cases, art informs culture...it does no reflect it. #whatisschool
What if we look outside school bldg to diversifying job opp'ties for Ts--beyond T & instr/tech coach? A needed & natural place for growth IMO. Tching jobs in industry. Ts as interface/tchr/proj managers for Stu workforce experiential lrning. Industry needs Ts & vv.#WHATISSCHOOL
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A4 Well, we can’t pay them more than district pay scale, so give perks. It isn’t a fix all, but if a T can get a few perks, or doesn’t have to fight just to get copy paper, it helps. Little things add up… so shower with the little. #whatisschool
joining late, sorry #whatisschool This very question, or very similar was put to a panel of university presidents. Salary is one aspect, societal recognition and respect also weigh on students
A4: we need a better mentor system for new teachers. We need the support in the first years to keep them emotionally supported. Letting them know that they are not alone and not have to re-invent the wheel which runs them down. #whatisschool
A3: I think we also need to get real about teacher burnout...need to have open conversations and watch for the early warning signs.
Need to support our teachers and school leaders ALWAYS!
#gotyourback#whatisschool
Now we are TALKING! This needs to be a future chat!!!! #whatisschool Actually, wishing this was a topic addressed in preservice teacher program and new teacher programs. Hmmm! #whatisschool
A5 I was one of these Ts! I think educators can encourage each other to find a #tribe beyond the school building. You need your school squad of course, but connecting to educators outside of the building(/city/state even) can help you stay connected to your purpose #whatisschool
A3 Professional expect a good degree of autonomy, not an over prescribed work load. They expect a career path where excellence is rewarded. They expect professional societies dedicated to improving the profession. #WhatIsSchool
I couldn’t agree more. I watch educators who are pumped and inspired to start the year. We need to support educators by finding ways to help them maintain that. #whatisschool
A4: Simple...treat them like high quality professionals.
Offer the support they need through more reflection and PD rather than the same burdensome evaluations and oversight.
Not everyone performs equally so they shouldn't be treated equally. #whatisschool
Q4: With attrition high (17% leaving profession in 1st 5 years), how might we as educators take action to protect our profession and keep high-quality teachers in the classroom? #whatisschool@mrkempnz
A3: At the minimum, state budgets need to support Ts & make adjustments so pay reflects the increase in cost of living. This will extinguish the flames of burn out, or keep pay as is, but put 2 teachers in every classroom. #whatisschool
A4) Strong mentoring programs, opportunities to engage in personalized professional learning, and positive, flexible learning environments all help to support teachers in their first few years. #WhatIsSchool
Q4: With attrition high (17% leaving profession in 1st 5 years), how might we as educators take action to protect our profession and keep high-quality teachers in the classroom? #whatisschool@mrkempnz
Attrition from teaching is not simple and there are many things we Ts cannot control. In no way should we feel responsible for former Ts moving on.
But there may be things we can do: collaborate, celebrate, and invest in the development of our colleagues. #whatisschool
My colleagues tried to talk me into teaching in another school before leaving the professionally entirely, and I think if I had been plugged into a network of Ts outside of my school/district then I would have been more excited about that option. But I was #burntout#whatisschool
A4: There’s a lot that can be done on the margins (e.g. licensure, diversity, affordable housing, prestige), but increasing pay strikes me as THE long-term answer to this question. That said, the route there is fraught with political and financial challenges. #whatisschool
My district has a wonderful new teacher programs. Our teacher retention seems to be pretty high. New teachers are provided the resources needed and feel like they belong from the beginning. #whatisschool
A4: Admin need to remove road blocks and ineffective policies so that Teachers can TEACH! Empowerment of Teachers will lead to common ownership and longevity #whatisschool
Really hate to hear this, ugh. You know though, I have found there are so many ways to be connected to education outside of the classroom. Love my role now in ed strategy & instructional design (in addition to teaching at the univ). Stick w/ us, Ebony! We need you! #whatisschool
The Art of Teaching hasn't changed, but opinion on the Art of Teaching has. When there is a teaching crisis, requirements for Ed courses should increase not decrease. We mustn't make it 'easier' to get onto courses so the calibre of a teacher is still paramount! #whatisschool
A4: We need to get the positive people (like YOU) to be forward facing with people from all over the world - get in front of prospective teachers and influence positively #whatisschool
A4. The profession needs to change to be treated professionally. Doctors, lawyers, engineers all spend time as Jr or under supervision but not suddenly in charge of 130 students. Provide more training wheels.
#whatisschool
The question is not just the pipeline, but the qualifications. That is, are we getting excellent teacher candidates .. and not simply those with high grades or other criteria?#whatisschool
A4: More support and creating a culture where asking for help is not frowned upon. Yes at times new teachers need to stand on their own two feet…but lets help them learn to walk before we ‘smash’ them. #whatisschool
Q4) With attrition high (17% leaving the profession in 1st 5 years), how might we as educators take action to protect our profession and keep high-quality teachers in the classroom? #whatisschool
Has the attrition rate for new teachers really changed that much over the years ... those first years are a reality check for many people and they realize what they have seen on tv/movies is not what is real. #whatisschool
#whatisschool#edfb4338 the answer to this question is evaluation and raises, with this a school can know what they have and know how much there Great teacher is worth.
Couldn't agree with this more Craig! Sometimes we're our own worst enemies. It become self-perpetuating. We need to focus on getting more 'good news' stories out there too. #whatisschool
A4: Thought of another A that may be less popular-don't dump the responsibility on new Ts. I don't care if it's year 2/3/4, this is a critical growth time. I was #sped dept head in year 2+on leadership teams bc other Ts didn't want to (outside of contractual hours) #whatisschool
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
A4 #whatisschool I think the idea of keeping teachers in the classroom is sometimes part of the problem. It can become a bit claustrophobic over time and it is important to keep a sense of identity and connection in the wider world.
A4) Teachers need to be encouraged to take risks, try new things, be trusted. They also have to get changes and challenges, not getting stuck, needs have to be addressed. #whatisschool
If Admins treat Ts like they need oversight and evaluation....they're only going to attract people who need/want oversight and evaluation. I don't think those folks make good Ts.
Admins need to support, celebrate, and unleash great Ts. You get what you promote. #whatisschool
#whatisschool@mrkempnz When you get to know your students- when you form beautiful relationships they recharge you- they bring such joy- that is why we enter- that is why we stay
Q2) Many educators are firm in understandings of their own “why”–which often doesn’t often include “excellent pay” as a reason. How might educators find job satisfaction in light of low pay? #whatisschool
A4: Last year was my first full year as a teacher in one job (but 3rd year as a T), and I'm SO thankful for all the Ts that "mentored" me. I put quotes because, they weren't required to, but they did. They explained things. They checked in on me. They encouraged me. #whatisschool
I’m sorry to hear. You have to do what’s right for you, but genuinely would love to connect and see if there’s anything I can do to help. Yes, the job isn’t perfect, but if you find a place where you feel belonging and create awesome opp. for kids, so rewarding! #whatisschool
A4. Teachers also need to own their own professional learning and development. It needs to be real and relevant - just like we do for our students' learning and teaching, ours needs to be the same. #whatisschool
Q4) With attrition high (17% leaving the profession in 1st 5 years), how might we as educators take action to protect our profession and keep high-quality teachers in the classroom? #whatisschool
YASS! In my pre-service, a prof closed the door one day and told us she was going to pursue a PhD in T mental health bc it is vastly under studied and under supported. Then she talked to us about alcoholism, taking care of our bodies, and self care. THAT saved me. #whatisschool
From an #drexelannualconf18 last week. Teaching is the profession that prepares all other professions. #whatisschool Even though society is a bit remiss in recognizing this truth
The only downside to that is the reality that teacher pay is directly related to tax rates ... people don't like to pay more in taxes ... they hate taxes more than they love teachers. #whatisschool
Wouldn't it be nice to have an exercise room for staff and students (Staff after hours or something else? #whatisschool Yes, I'm specifically thinking of elementary school.
A4 1) Elevate status of profession in communities ala other nations 2) close gap w private and public sector professional position salaries 3) forgive student loans all a start #WhatIsSchool
A4 A strong publications effort around the impact of the school system. Demonstrate the value to the community, they are the stakeholders in the next generations education. For example: What starts here changes the world. https://t.co/aXpH9S5p9n#WhatIsSchool
Salient convo w/an engineer recently. He told me back in the 70's engineers had what Ts have now---limited job options. Then it took off w/levels, niches, new fields, expansion & look at it now. Much CHOICE within the field to grow into during a career. #WHATISSCHOOL@DrBradMac
#whatisschool@mrkempnz Unite. Support one another unconditionally. When we collaborate and synchronize into a single, loud, purposeful voice we can bring the change
Q3) This month, TIME Magazine’s cover story was on the teacher salary crisis in the United States citing extreme drops by 23% in colleges graduating new teachers. How can we combat this and keep the pipeline of qualified new teachers from drying up? #whatisschool
Q5) Considering global education, when we find ways to make teaching a more financially attractive career, what improvements can we expect to see? #whatisschool
Trending positive is always my approach, but we need to caution that we aren’t making people feel “wrong” for how they may feel. Every situation is unique. #whatisschool
Because of this, I knew I would burn out within 5 years. It was a decision I made in year 2 because of how much I loved my school community and how much I wanted to give to turn that school around (which we did!!) But difficult, heartbreaking, and damaging. #whatisschool
I taught in an independent school. Past few years new teachers and mentors. Now strong outreach to engage all teachers to #bethereforeachother#whatisschool

A4 In my experience visiting many different school districts across the south Texas, the most pervasive reason teachers give when leaving the profession is lack of support from administration. #whatisschool

A4: I'm amazed by so many incredible Ts fighting the good fight with their inspiring stories and positivity. Surround yourself with them. Support our prospective Ts and those just entering the profession. Show them why it's the best! #whatisschool
Q5) Considering global education, when we find ways to make teaching a more financially attractive career, what improvements can we expect to see? #whatisschool
A4) Teachers need to be encouraged to take risks, try new things, be trusted. They also have to get changes and challenges, not getting stuck, needs have to be addressed. #whatisschool

A4: my cousin works for a company that provides a Zen room for staff to relax and unwind. Not like we have a lot of time to do that, but 3 minutes are better than nothing #whatisschool
Well another big piece is that states are on the hook for huge obligations WRT pensions & retirement. So long as lawmakers continue kicking the can down the road, more & more of the existing dollars will never make it into teachers' pockets https://t.co/rUmtokPWx9#whatisschool

#whatisschool@mrkempnz it is about camaraderie and support- when we feel driven and focused in a central purpose - we want to be a part of it- we want to help spark innovation and growth
Q4) With attrition high (17% leaving the profession in 1st 5 years), how might we as educators take action to protect our profession and keep high-quality teachers in the classroom? #whatisschool
A5. Collaboration locally and globally. Teaching and learning with other students no matter where they are in the world. Leads to a deeper understanding and respect. #whatisschool
Yes, Schools of Ed can be credentialing factories, with ties to State Ed Departments to keep pumping. Yet, we know care, empathy, and love require no credentials. #whatisschool
Q2: John Wooden’s @TEDTalks had my favorite “why” for teachers in a poem. “They ask me why I teach & I reply “Where could I find more splendid company?” Gives me chills bc SO TRUE. Teaching rules!! #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/9caovjw8OU
A3: I think we also need to get real about teacher burnout...need to have open conversations and watch for the early warning signs.
Need to support our teachers and school leaders ALWAYS!
#gotyourback#whatisschool
Good evening #whatisschool! Our district and school have many challenges. I have also set some aggressive goals for our students and staff. I have to say many of my teachers are stepping up. We are working together. I believe that we are continuing to build trust daily.
A5: HIgher pay will make teaching a via profession for many people who now won't even consider it. Also, higher pay mean less 2nd jobs, less stressed teachers. #whatisschool
#whatisschool@mrkempnz More choice and independence as educators. A stronger support network and more mindfulness between educators. When teachers are happy- students are happy and learning and that is the perfect combination and the beauty of education
Q5) Considering global education, when we find ways to make teaching a more financially attractive career, what improvements can we expect to see? #whatisschool
A5 I think this question is at best sideways. We must make the other changes we have discussed in addition to addressing financial shortcomings. #WhatIsSchool
A5: beginning to see this with the rapid increase in “for profit” schools. Facilities, resources, support staff etc. but most importantly teacher retention #whatisschool
I have always been very impressed with Montessori teaching credentialing. Many people outside the profession passionate about teaching able to access entry points and be in the classroom within one year after high-quality and experiential learning and training! #whatisschool
A5: In international education I have the privilege to work with some very fine teachers. These chats embody the best parts of that group: open mindedness, creativity, reflection, and an intense drive to improve their craft. #whatisschool
A3 #whatisschool#highered could put less emphasis on declaring degree major, give more breadth for college students to explore #edu topics. Too much pressure to declare & fulfill credits. IMO
Agreed. We have to remember the “why”. Having the ability to take risks and work with people you love working with goes a long way. It starts with positive culture and energy. #WhatIsSchool
As educators we often feel under appreciated #whatisschool people say “Those who can’t do, teach” BUT we shrug it off because we love what we do. We need to continue to prove them wrong. Students know better and we know better- we are helping to build a better future every day
A5 Higher monetary compensation will definitely help but will it keep teachers in the profession if they are not given pedagogy autonomy, challenged, assigned meaningful tasks, given opportunities to be creative and innovative and are not supported? #whatisschool
Q5) Considering global education, when we find ways to make teaching a more financially attractive career, what improvements can we expect to see? #whatisschool
I see trending positive not discounting how others feel, but instead modeling that we always have the choice to take a perspective on the continuum somewhere between positive and negative.
Our ability to persevere is directly related to our proximity to positive. #whatisschool
A3: We need to start with altering the perception of teaching. People think it’s “noble” but not in the same realm as lawyers and doctors. They need to see that Ts are well educated, intelligent, and important to the future of society. #whatisschool
Q5) Considering global education, when we find ways to make teaching a more financially attractive career, what improvements can we expect to see? #whatisschool
A5: It could help to raise the caliber of teachers we have overall, which would be healthy for the profession writ large. As the adage goes, a rising tide lifts all boats. #whatisschool
Hope to see my amazing PLN tonight for #teachmindful its all about the roads: crossroads, 4 way stops, rural dirt roads and FM county highways- traveling through learning 5:00PST/7:00CST/8:00EST
30 MINUTES away!!!
Yes Nathan - our profession is something to be proud of! The greatest impact anyone can have on a life and the future of society is in our hands #WhatIsSchool
A5: Lucky to have started my teaching in public ed in US w/ the best principal! However, unforeseeable circumstances changed my story & I went abroad 7 years ago. I never forget my roots & where I started though. Having taught in 4 countries now, I'm still learning #whatisschool
A5 Yes sharing and reaching out, but also transparency in being honest about what’s working what isn’t. Mistakes hopefully empowers to try again #growthmindset#whatisschool
A5: For so many you will see teachers with fewer health problems, less stress, happier due to less worry. The ability to save for retirement and rely less on shrinking Medicare funds and a tiny fixed income. 🙏🏻#whatisschool
I love the possibilities too. Back in 2011 I taught alongside a teacher in the US - I'm in New Zealand. Our classes were learning about each other. So powerful! #whatisschool
Embed more meaningful community service into PbL in schools. Feed the souls of teachers and kids. Create wellness and mentoring programs grounded in strands of wellness. Educate parents. Smile more. #whatisschool A4

A6: Continue being an advocate for the profession. Whether it’s writing an op-ed, testifying in committee, or doing some mythbusting with a neighbor, use your voice and expertise. #whatisschool
A5: we will see the brightest, most empathetic minds joining forces to provide the highest quality education to all our Ss regardless of their zip code. #WhatIsSchool
Me either. It can be a challenge developing this culture but positive interactions daily and support can only help the cause. It might take a month. It might take 5 years. Be persistent and believe in the why. #WhatIsSchool

A6) Share how important education is, how we impact student life on social media like Twitter and help people reflect on what could happens if teachers disappear #whatisschool
Q6: One small thing: I am going to reach out to my children's teachers and let them know they matter! Inspired by @principalkp and his year long commitment to #everyonematters!
Actually, let me start with @principalkp: you matter and I appreciate you my friend! #whatisschool
A4: We have to re-professionalize the profession. High standards for university, high standards for certification, @NBPTS National Board Certification, say NO to boxed programs, say YES to teacher know-how, knowledge, and expertise, pay teachers more. #whatisschool
#whatisschool@mrkempnz jump on and help a struggling teacher fund a project. Donate books and supplies to a local classroom that can use them. And VOTE for those who support education and educators
A6) Lift up the stories of other educators and share the amazing work that they do everyday. Celebrate successes to drown out the negative. #WhatIsSchool
A4 #whatisschool Encourage more project based teaching, where teachers collaborate to design and solve problems together. Foster community & questioning.
Avoid compliance mentality. Oh, & get rid of annual stndrdized testing.
A6: Have solidarity for our fellow teachers, not just nationally, but globally. Encourage more teachers to run for office. Vote. Respectfully engage those that disagree. #whatisschool
Embed more meaningful community service into PbL in schools. Feed the souls of teachers and kids. Create wellness and mentoring programs grounded in strands of wellness. Educate parents. Smile more. #whatisschool A4
A6: Continue being the exceptional educators that you are and support those who put teaching in a category with other life-changing occupations! We are the occupation that creates all other occupations! #whatisschool
A2: You need to find your tribe. It may not be in your school building, but you need your PLN that you can get advice & feedback from. That is what Twitter has given me. #whatisschool
A6: Look at the Ss that are constantly smiling and perhaps the ones that aren't. It's instant feedback we can use to think of the smallest things to make a difference for our Ss. Those moments are priceless. #whatisschool
Please help me thank @JenWilliamsEdu for leading today's #whatisschool chat with me - Connect & follow her - she is one of the greatest educators I have had the pleasure of connecting with
Yes! I do get our job comes with challenges and difficult days, but keeping the joy in our jobs, smiling, saying positive things...I find personally I am able to approach those tougher situations or days with strength & passion much more #whatisschool
A6. Keep connecting with your PLN and choose carefully who you surround yourself with. Keep an eye on those who are insistent on being negative. It can drain the positivity out of you if they're not prepared to change. #whatisschool
Thank you @mrkempnz and @JenWilliamsEdu for reminding us of such an important topic: the well-being of educators! Now gearing up for conferences. Much love to all. #whatisschool
A6: highlight the positive impact education has on all aspects of a community. Teachers broaden their influence beyond schools and into communities, government & business #whatisschool
I am also. This is only my 2nd twitter chat and I am hooked. I love learning and it cannot get any better than learning from other positive educators #whatisschool
A6: pay had very little do to with me leaving the classroom (but it did play a role!) and I'll say that participating in chats like these, meeting Ts like y'all, makes me want to get back in the classroom. so this, keep doing this 🙏 #whatisschool
Saying thank you to @mrkempnz@JenWilliamsEdu and #whatisschool Just saying there were other job opportunities along my journey but none that was as #goodafit as teaching. Keep on truckin’
@giftEDnz is starting a chat this Sunday from 8-9 (NZST). Will add other time zones shortly. We'd love you to join us. Our first chat is on perfectionism - something for everyone! #giftEDnz#gtchat#whatisschool
Also seek out others outside your tribe for diversity and pushing your boundaries. It is so easy to find an ecosystem that reinforces your current beliefs and practices. #WhatIsSchool
That certainly has a lot to do with it. (IMO) #whatisschool We're moving to a PLC school to help reduce that feeling. We realized we cannot treat / educate 30 Ss at once without significant support. Imagine if your physician did that.... #whatisschool
I know that may not be the case everywhere but in Baltimore, we often have vacancies. Programs like @TFABaltimore, BCTR, and UTC help fulfill needs. But attrition is a problem, even in a district with competitive salaries.

Really, I thought teachers simply delivered a pre-packaged curriculum on a packaged platform that automatically grades all student work. #whatisschool (kidding obviously)
