#txlchat Gooood Evening Txlchatters. One crazy proud band booster Mom and Librarian of 2 High School campuses signing on from the Rio Grande Valley. Nicole Cruz
We will begin with our 1st Q is just a minute, but as a refresher, when you reply to a question please reply with A1, A2, etc and always include the #txlchat so we can see your replies.
A1 I work on building positive relationships with students, admin, and teachers, and I don’t hesitate to approach teachers with ideas for collaboration or ask for input from students and admin. #txlchat
A1: I try to help others as much as possible so that they are willing to come to the library and support any program related to the library. I love building relationships! #txlchat
A1 We offer unique programming that is student centered, we share what we are doing with our admin and staff as much as possible, we are always looking for innovate new ideas and never use "this is the way its always been done" #txlchat

#txlchat A1. Like Dog the Bounty Hunter ... I’m on the prowl to learn from colleagues and reform my ways to improve and grow. Create and share measurable goals.
A1: For the past 3 yrs, I've put myself out there. Made my face known. This revitalized the library & got Ts who rarely visited to make it part of their curriculum. #txlchat
A1-change displays (I have big, more elaborate & also “pop up” smaller displays), update webpage content, try to have something going on ea month, announcements, library Twitter #txlchat
A1 Share what’s going on in the library with staff, students, community and district members via emails, newsletters, library website, and social media! I also like to visit with ALL depts to see how we can plan Collabs. #txlchat
A1 Send teachers and our current librarian book suggestions and ideas that I think would directly apply to them and their students. I suggested Wedgie & Gizmo would be a hilarious read-aloud, and also great for inferencing! @sselfors#txlchat
A1: I connect with students and find out what they are reading. We have conversations about it. Also I #collaborate on a regular basis with the teachers #wearebettertogether#txlchat
A1 I welcome in anyone who needs the space. I’m not a shushed. Ts and admin still remember the librarian from 9-10 years ago who didn’t like ANYONE using HER library. #txlchat
A1- I greet everyone who walks in the door of the library. I want the students and parents to feel welcome in THEIR library. And i talk about books ALOT! #txlchat
A2 This year I’m creating a virtual library advisory committee on our learning management system in hopes that more students will be able to participate. Not everyone who wants to participate can come to school early or stay late. #txlchat
I see LOTS of replies about attitudes and relationships. I feel this cannot be stressed enough in our profession. These are crucial pieces to any successful program. #TXLchat
A2: I've promoted myself to co-teach or team teach. Ss & Ts see me in a different light. They reach out to me more & see me as a viable resource.
#txlchat
A1.) I make it a point to sit at the circulation desk during our peak times; I want to ensure that I’m readily available to assist students, recommend books, make connections, build rapport, etc. #TXLchat
Sorry I’m late- @clairehogg89 from San Angelo Central High. A1 I welcome students and teachers with a smile and get out to see teachers at their PLCs #TxlChat#beseen#beheard
A2 We have had to take over campus student IT due to district level decisions so we have been working to strike a balance between serving student needs and keeping our library program healthy. We *think* we have found a happy medium #itsallaboutbalance#txlchat
A2 A monthly library newsletter sent out to EVERYONE!! I’ve also made the space more inviting (according to staff and sts) and added cozy and flexible spaces after student and staff I put. #txlchat
A2 It really hasn’t been noticeable yet and hasn’t made much impact, but I stopped charging fines this year and am slowly working on deleting some of the outstanding fines. #txlchat
A2: I have successfully brought Battle of the Books to our District for third and fourth grades This year we are expanding to fifth/sixth @hafer_carol#txlchat
A2 This is small, but I set up Alexa so students can ask questions and do the skills she offers like SAT Word of the Day, This Day in History, etc. the students love it! #TXLChat
A2: EOY report. I shared the library events and data with Ts during back to school inservice. They had no idea of the library programming taking place. This led to an increase in collaboration this year. They want “in”! #txlchat
A flexible schedule! I am super stoked about it, and most of the teachers seem to be getting into it. Also some new rdg initiatives- including #Fisher100, a challenge to our students to read in 200 cool places. #txlchat
A2: this is going to sound weird, but this year we are actually focusing on talking and sharing about books... for the past few years I have been so focused on tech, makerspace, etc I felt like my Ss had forgotten about reading for pleasure. #TXLchat
A1: I just revamped my weekly schedule to help Ts in the same grade be on the same page/week. And I'm adding lunch book clubs when we start REFUGEE for #GRA in October! #txlchat
A2: a huge change I made in the library this year is doing away with AR, taking off the leveled labels, and talking to students about making their own choices about reading. Ss are really excited about reading and choosing their own books. #letthemread#growingreaders#txlchat
#txlchat Q2. Sounds silly but it was a battle I had to win to overcome stereotypes. It’s a library not a hospital. Let the kids eat during lunches. Don’t make a kid choose between finishing an AP paper and eating. #YouMatter
A2: Short e-mails targeted to specific teachers or departments to highlight a library service that might be helpful to them and/or their students. #txlchat
A2 For the past two summers I've created summer book bags for my teachers so they can enjoy some current YA literature when they have a bit more time to indulge. It's helpful to have them recommending the titles we carry in the library. #txlchat
The virtual library advisory committee so new and I don't have much to report now but I'd love to fill everyone in after I've had some more experience with it. 1/2 #txlchat
A2-my attitude & facial expressions. I let small things bother me so much that I, well...I’ve decided those things are NOT going to make me and the library space cranky this year #txlchat 😄
A2 A google form to suggest books on the website, a new google site, and getting out (I’m in my own building) to #beseen and meet them where they are. Also hosted lunch and learn for new teachers. #TxlChat
I’m either at the circ desk or at a student table during high traffic times, not retreating to my office. The circ desk creates more visibility while the tables put me in the middle of students. #txlchat
A2: a huge change I made in the library this year is doing away with AR, taking off the leveled labels, and talking to students about making their own choices about reading. Ss are really excited about reading and choosing their own books. #letthemread#growingreaders#txlchat
A3 We sent out emails and created short tutorials to our staff about the changes and the process that students must go through to receive IT assistance. At the same time we have shared that our library program is still strong and our soul responsibility is not the 1:1 #txlchat
A3 I use newsletters, social media, the library website, face-to-face chats, and emails. I also ask teachers to pass word along to others in their departments. I’ll also ask to have five minutes for sharing during faculty meetings. #txlchat
AWESOME!! This is a BIG deal for readers. They will struggle to read the more difficult text as long as they are interested in it. Proud of you for taking this step! #txlchat
A3 social media and the monthly newsletter. Being a part of Back to School night and meeting community members & parents so they know me. I also had the library social handles posted where they could be easily seen. #txlchat
A3: I first communicated with the Ts and explained why we were doing away with AR, then I made sure to make myself available at our Meet the Teacher night for parents that had Qs or concerns. #txlchat
A3: talked to Ss about it at orientation & continue to talk about it as they come in for lessons & check out. Started Ts on board this summer via twitter and FB and let parents know via library newsletter and social media. Also created a hashtag #WoodstoneReads#TXLchat
Q2: Sharing the library’s story through social media has been a big change for us, plus helping students connect with others through @Skype , @Flipgrid & @googlehangouts_ — #txlchat
A1: It's seems so simple...smiling, being helpful, asking Ss and Ts about their day or what their working on...but those are the things they remember and appreciate and what keeps them coming back to me as a resource. #buildingrelationships#txlchat
A3: I sit with a different group of teachers at each faculty meeting. My principal is also great about giving me time for announcements at each meeting. #TXLchat
A3-Communication is key! It's a way to tell your library story, showcase the things that are happening, & build advocates in all that follow along #txlchat
Did you know that Google Home & Alexa will read stories written by your students! It so cool to see the students faces when @amazonecho reads their story! #txlchat
A2.) A change I initiated would be our @PHSBook_Club. We meet every Thursday before school. It’s a perfect opportunity for like-minded students to connect, socialize, & grow through discussion. #TXLchat
For the flexible schedule, i met with each grade level team to discuss it. For the incentive program, I made slides for the teachers to include in their open house night presentations. Posted videos on library social media and talked about in the morning announcements.#txlchat

Some were excited, others were concerned at first, but when I explained and had conversations with them about how it would really grow a culture of reading on our campus and get the students thinking deeply about their books, they are all excited now. #txlchat
Titles I know will be big hits in the fall, or ones that were popular during the school year. I think it's important teachers are talking to the students about current authors. I tailor the books to what grade/level they are teaching as well. #txlchat
A1: I engage with as many Ss, teachers, custodians, counselors, prinicpals, cafeteria workers as possible on a daily basis to liveout the idea that the school library is a community-focused space #txlchat
#txlchat For those who asked for info on the virtual LAC, I set up a Group on @Schoology. There's a discussion board for a sharing of ideas & a poll about what they would like to see in the library--makerspaces, karaoke, manga club, etc. Then I post group code on flyers #txlchat
A3: Library invites. Just this week I invited all staff (Ts, Paras, Office) to the library for cupcakes. Just got a grant and I wanted to share the details and what’s next over a cupcake. #txlchat
Q3 I popped by PLCs, sent emails, had personal conversations and try to be out and about more. Also, share with students who share with teachers! #manyways#manytimes#txlchat
A4 Reading more encouraging books-fictional and NF, seeking PD, keeping my goals posted where I can see them constantly and having a good relationship with admin and teachers. I also make sure every morning I tell myself I “get to go to work” not “I have to” #txlchat
A4 This year I’m participating in TLA committees, networking other librarians, seeking online learning opportunities, and reading about the new AASL and TASL frameworks. Also spending a lot of time hunting down grants for the library and the school. #txlchat
#txlchat A2 This year I am being a role model as District Lead Librarian by creating my First Battle of the Books team. We meet every week during lunch and I may need to find a new space because student interest is....HUGE
A3. Word of mouth so far. Ss have tried the program by making animated dots. Social media and flyers/permission slips will be sent home with students. Sign up will be limited due to resources. Maybe different fall and spring group. #txlchat
A4 Library courses at UNT (with @StarrReadnRun! woo!) and hopefully attending TLA again this year! Last year was my first experience and it was AMAZING! #txlchat
A2: Ive been weeding 20 years of books and stuff and rearranging/removing....some love it, some hate it. It's draining but the vision to make an active space for resource and discovery is too important. #txlchat
A3.) The students, staff, & community are aware of @PHSBook_Club through announcements, presentations, & social media promotion. Piktochart infographics work great, too. #TXLchat
I will also be engaging in Lunch & Learns and remote/distance learning for my Ts. Because I don't have help in the Lib, I'm gonna advocate for one at least once a week to meet with all Depts & plug in during their conferences. #GoodThings#Txlchat
A4: I am reading prof. books and following more #librarians on twitter for ideas. But also part of a Librarian Leadership group #NTXLibLeaders and am presenting at conferences about #collaboration I will present at #TLA2019 EEEEKK!! #txlchat
Good for you! So happy you could join us tonight. Let's make sure we support our newest colleagues in our profession by following them on Twitter! #txlchat
Hello! I’m Buffie from Kimball Elementary, Mesquite ISD PreK-5/ A1: time spent helping others & hearing people out has come back to me two-fold. It’s all about community. #misdlibraries#kimballes#TXLChat
A2: I'm trying out an online newsletter for students where I feature different things like databases, teacher, student book recommendations, helpful apps, etc. I've only done 1 so far, but it was really well received so I'm excited to continue #txlchat
A4 We are trying to advocate for the importance of quality PD at conferences like #TCEA19 and #txla19 and making sure we are active in our PLN's and on social media to continue to learn new and innovative ideas for our students and staff #txlchat
A4 I'm looking in involve my principal more in conference presentations. Trying to reach outside the library world to help spread the message of what a great librarian/library program can do for a school. #TXLchat
A3 When students return late books, I just let them know “It’s all taken care of.” I’ve also let senior teachers know I’m not penalizing students with fines (and clearing them). #txlchat
A4: I'm in some great PD book studies! I got to attend ALA annual this summer. And I am on the SPOT TLA book committee. Plus this chat and more regular PLC time with our district librarians. #txlchat
#txlchat A3 Be visible in the campus and community. Serve on boards. Volunteer to speak at the parent meetings, athletic booster club, volunteer to make spirit posters. Be happy. Be There. Readers develop empathy. We got our local Fire Department involved in a display.
Be sure to browse through the #txlchat to pick up some great ideas you can implement this year in your library. Thank you to everyone who joined us tonight and shared your great ideas. Keep being amazing!
A2: Going to a completely flexible schedule has broadened the scope of what I can achieve & opened the door to creative collaborations w/ teachers! #misdlibraries#kimballes#TXLChat
Stay current with library journals, professional conferences, book study with George Couros, serving on committees, Twitter PLC/chats and more #txlchat
A3: I'm sending the newsletter via email to all Ss, Ts, and even had some parents ask to be added to my mailing list after hearing about it from their kids. I share on social media as well #txlchat
Join us next week as we talk about Judi Moreillon's Maximizing School Librarian Leadership. If you have a copy, there's time to read it before next week. :) #txlchat
A2: Going to a completely flexible schedule has broadened the scope of what I can achieve & opened the door to creative collaborations w/ teachers! #misdlibraries#kimballes#TXLChat
A3: I talk about the goals+vision for what a change in the library can look like. And implement small visual changes to showcase. Usually everyone from the school is excited, but there are a few hard skeptics who want it to stay quiet, slow, and passive and that's hard. #txlchat
Stealing this! #txlchat I try to acknowledge each dept’s “month” or week or day—occasionally, I have someone send me a note in April for school librarian day
A2: I have asked teachers to stay in the library during lessons. This allows me to team teach with the teacher and model different technologies and library resources. #TXLchat
A3: I led the staff though a “How Can I Serve You?” presentation where I helped Ts set up Chrome & bookmark all my sites plus learn abt my programming. Sending out a monthly menu was a huge help too! #misdlibraries#kimballes#TXLChat
I TOTALLY lost track of my mentions/notifications during this chat! Thanks again for everyone who chimed in and HUGE thanks to 2 of my favorite librarians @becalzada and @technolibrary for co-hosting tonight #TXLchat
It’s good that you realize the impact your body language has on relationships. That’s a special kind of insight that some of us haven’t developed yet. Kudos to you for owning it and wanting to change it. #txlchat
A3: I let teachers know that their presence is requested in emails that I send them. The key to this being successful is that I try to make the lessons valuable for both the students and the teachers. Directly linking to TEKS or modeling technology for them. #TXLchat
A4: Going to PD, conferences, bouncing ideas of Ts and fellow librarians, reading professional journals. There's so much good stuff out there. The hard part is deciding what to implement!! #txlchat
Well, I just found out my proposal was accepted for TLA conference in April. My principal and I will be discussing principal/library partnerships on a panel. I'll definitely be promoting it close to conference time. #TXLchat
